Dark Matter (2015) s03e01 Episode Script

Being Better Is So Much Harder / It Doesn't Have to Be Like This

1 Previously, on "Dark Matter" The summit on EOS-7 will come under attack, and the result will be all-out corporate war.
It's a key that allows someone to access inter-dimension space time.
Use non-lethal force only.
I'll get the Blink Drive.
I just needed to cut you.
The poison that coats my blade will do the rest.
[groans.]
[suspenseful music.]
Are you telling me you want the war to happen? My people are already at war.
[laser blasts.]
[bang.]
[rumbling.]
Three, Five, Six, if you can hear me, get down to the "Marauder.
" [dramatic music.]
[screaming and yelling.]
Hey, come with me.
[bang.]
[dark music.]
[siren blaring.]
Two? Two.
Come on.
- Where are the others? - Come on, we've gotta go.
We have to find them.
If we don't leave now, we're not gonna make it.
[siren blaring.]
No, we can't leave.
Not yet.
Hey, look at me.
[siren blaring.]
We have to go.
Now.
[explosions.]
[rock music.]
[ominous music.]
Where have you been? Negotiating our safe passage, thank you very much.
I don't understand.
The android was the bomb, but he detonated off-site.
Well, all I know is EOS-7 was destroyed, and now, we are looking at corporate war.
Ferrous Corp has launched a pre-emptive strike, and all hell has broken loose.
So what does that mean for us? Well, fortunately, Mikkei remained neutral at the council vote, so neither side see us as a direct threat for now.
I have a Mikkei cruiser en route, but the closest friendly in range is your "Raza.
" I have requested a comm link in order to set up a rendezvous.
Wait, they know we're gonna meet up with the "Raza"? Yes.
And they're still willing to help us? Despite whatever disagreements Volkov-Rusi may have had with you and your crew in the past If that's what you call Two killing a dozen of their soldiers.
War changes everything.
Now it's all about new alliances.
[beep.]
Android! - Five, are you all right? - Yeah, I'm fine.
We made it to an escape pod and managed to jettison before the station blew up.
Thanks to Commander Truffault.
We were picked up by a Volkov-Rusi ship that answered our distress beacon, and they have agreed to give us safe transport to your ship.
We just need your coordinates.
Understood.
What about the rest of the crew? Have you heard anything? No, I lost contact with them shortly before the explosion.
Two, Three, Six.
They were all on the station.
Well, maybe they were able to reach escape pods too.
We couldn't have been the only ones.
Perhaps.
We'll find them.
I know we will.
Everyone's gonna be okay.
No, Five.
I'm afraid that's not true.
[beeping.]
- Shields are down - We've lost navigation.
Trying to get the engines back online.
[whirring.]
All right, I've managed to stabilize our attitude with thrusters, but primary systems are inoperable.
So are sensors and comms.
Though I suppose it could be worse.
Yeah, we could be having this conversation outside.
Think you can pull off a miracle? Sure, but I'll need the right equipment and about two days to get it done.
I'd settle for just getting comms back online before the GA find us.
So what do you think? Hey! - She was counting on me.
- Don't do that.
Don't make her a damsel in distress.
She's a hell of a lot better than that.
She knew going on that station would be a risk.
She thought it was worth it.
But we still failed, and Ferrous Corp detonated that bomb anyway.
That wasn't a bomb.
What are you saying? That chain reaction of explosions could've only been caused by the reactor core going critical.
Ferrous Corp wasn't responsible.
It was Ryo Ishida.
Four? - No, why would he? - He said as much to the Android after stealing the Blink Drive.
Yeah, while we were on the station, he boarded the "Raza" and took it.
I could've stopped this from happening.
I should've seen it coming.
He claimed he needed it to win the war Zairon was fighting, but I never thought he'd go this far with it.
But still no, no, why Why would he blow up that station and kill all those innocent people? Because destroying the station triggers a bigger conflict, one that indirectly weakens Zairon's enemies by redirecting their corporate backers.
How do you know this? Because he told me.
And, like you, I didn't believe he'd actually do it.
We've got to stop thinking of him as our friend.
He stopped being that the moment he downloaded Ryo Ishida's memories.
The Four we knew is gone.
[clanking.]
Teku.
It's been far too long, my old friend.
Ryo? Now Emperor Ishida Ryo of Zairon.
Your step-mother? She'll no longer be a threat to you or anyone else.
And Hiro? He'll no longer be a threat either.
Your step-brother was too easily influenced but, at heart, a good man.
His death is unfortunate.
His death was regrettable but, ultimately, necessary.
I still have enemies within the court, but they've lost their direct claim to the throne.
They're disorganized and without purpose.
It's only a matter of time before I uproot them.
And then what? Have them take my place here in this cell? Why risk it? Your years as a fugitive have hardened you, Ryo.
I can see it.
What happened to the idealistic young man I used to teach? He's finally learned your lessons in political ethics.
Now come, let's get you out of here before you make me change my mind.
Oh, Teku, I've missed you.
And I you, Ryo.
Welcome home.
Welcome back.
Still no word from the others? None.
Well, we have to go back and search for survivors.
I'd advise against that.
By now, the GA will be all over that area.
Well, we can't just leave them.
We can't give up if there's a chance they're still alive.
There were escape pods all over that station.
I'll contact Mikkei Central and have them divert all available ships to the area.
If your friends have survived, hopefully our ships will find them first.
[distant banging.]
What was that? We're under attack.
We've been double crossed? No, the Volkov-Rusi ship has been destroyed.
It's Ferrous Corp.
[panting.]
[grunting.]
[alarm ringing.]
[distant banging.]
Why aren't we jumping? Their first salvo disabled our FTL engines.
It's always the first thing they target.
[rumbling.]
That's their attempt to disable our shield.
[suspenseful music.]
[lasers blasting.]
It appears the engines on both ships have been disabled.
What about their shields? Their shields are down.
So fire on them.
Finish them off.
Unfortunately, our weapons are also down.
[lasers blasting, ship rumbling.]
Their weapons seem to be just fine, no? As are our shields, for the time being.
Wouldn't now be a perfect time to use that Blink Drive of yours? It would be, if we still had it.
Oh, you gotta be kidding.
[distant banging.]
[grunts.]
[groaning.]
Anders? I thought you were dead.
I would've been if I hadn't been wearing my flak vest.
The fall actually did more damaging.
Hit the back of my head and knocked me right out.
You have looked better.
What's the story? Oh, I ran into some old friends.
It was more like they ran into me, actually.
Repeatedly.
With their fists and feet.
[dark music.]
Where are we? What were you doing on that station? I was trying to stop a bombing.
Kal, was he with you? - Hmm? - Six.
Yeah, yeah.
Him and some of my crew.
What happened? I'm sorry.
With our engines dead, we're just another cold piece of debris to any ship sensors.
At least we have that.
Mm-hmm, and, maybe comms.
[whirring.]
[beeping.]
Oh, yes.
[suspenseful music.]
[lasers blasting.]
Hey, we're receiving a transmission.
It's the "Marauder.
" Come in, "Raza," this is the "Marauder.
" Come in.
"Marauder," this is the "Raza.
" It's good to hear from you.
I'm with Six.
We managed to make it out before the station exploded.
Any word from the others? Anything from Five? Yes, Five also managed to escape.
- Is she okay? - Is she there? I'm here, and I'm fine.
Commander Truffault and I managed to make it to an escape pod in time.
- Truffault? - Yes.
Thank you.
We owe you one.
This is one assist I won't be calling favors on, unless, of course, you happen to have a couple of FTL engines handy.
We don't have any operational engines.
We need you to come pick us up immediately.
Unfortunately, Two, that's not possible.
The ship has been damaged in a battle with a Ferrous Corp destroyer, and we're dead in space.
We're effecting repairs as we speak, but there's no telling when we'll be jump-capable.
Okay, well, do what you can.
We'll sit tight.
Have you heard from Three? No, I'm afraid not.
[solemn music.]
You should know, I'm sorry, I Android, what is it? Nyx.
She's dead.
- What? - How? I found her on the bridge.
I suspect she encountered Ryo Ishida and tried to stop him from taking the Blink Drive.
He killed her.
[dramatic music.]
[lasers blasting.]
They're a determined bunch.
- [rumbling.]
- [beeping.]
What was that? The Ferrous Ship has launched a shuttle.
It's headed straight for us.
- [grunts.]
- What are you doing? Trying to get this generator up and running.
Temperature's already starting to drop.
It's gonna get cold fast.
You should let me take a look at it.
You can see fine from there.
- I mean, let me help you.
- I got it.
- Seriously.
- I got it.
- [whirring.]
- [sputtering.]
Are you really gonna be this stubborn? Stubborn enough to keep one of the galaxy's most wanted locked up? Hell yeah.
We should be working together.
Like you said, the temperature's falling fast.
We're gonna be stuck here for a little while.
See, that's where you're wrong.
I triggered the emergency beacon during planet fall.
Someone will come for us, sooner or later.
[whirring.]
[beeping.]
[clanging.]
How far out are they? They've just breached the airlock.
They're on board.
[dramatic music.]
Move, move.
They've breached containment.
Where's your nearest weapons cache? This way.
It's nothing to be concerned about yet, but we'll keep a close eye on it.
How's Teku doing? Fine.
I left instructions with one of the guards to prepare a guest room for him.
Good.
I assume he will be staying a while.
Well, that's for him to decide.
I would assume that, as Emperor, it would be up to you.
His presence in the court concerns me.
Teku spent the last three years locked up in a dungeon because he was loyal to me.
With all due respect, heika, he was imprisoned because he was disloyal to the throne.
Well, now they're all one and the same, so there can be no confusion.
Like your step-brother, Teku leads with his heart.
His interests may not align with the court's.
[tense music.]
Then I should take steps to rectify that.
I'm not the bad guy.
Your outstanding warrant would suggest otherwise.
Okay, I am a bad guy, but I am not the bad guy.
We didn't blow up that station.
- That was Ferrous Corp.
- Why would they do that? To weaken their corporate rivals.
I guarantee you, out there, there's gonna be all-out war If it hasn't already started.
So you and the crew of the "Raza" are, what, defenders of the peace? No, we're the bad guys, but we're trying to stop the bigger bad guys from screwing things up for everyone.
You sound like Kal.
How well did you know him? We've been friends from way back, trained at the academy together.
I was the best man So you knew him well enough to know that he wouldn't have thrown in with us if we couldn't be trusted to do the right thing.
Yeah, he took us down.
He turned us in.
But he also helped us escape because he realized that he'd made a mistake.
He realized, like you said, there were bigger bads out there than you.
You happen to be working for one of the biggest.
I don't always agree with our methods, but the GA is a force for law and order, and that is something I believe in.
Well, if I'm right, and we're headed for corporate war, law and order will be the first thing to go.
[beeping.]
[beeping.]
Come on out, little girl.
We're not gonna hurt you much.
[laser blast.]
[grunts.]
Back, back! Coming at you.
[groans.]
[machine gunfire.]
[groaning.]
Move, move! Headed your way.
All clear.
Okay, check your weapons.
I need one body in that hall drawing fire.
The rest of us are gonna circle around and outflank them.
Take them by surprise.
[men screaming.]
[dark music.]
[exhales.]
Son of a I don't understand.
Why would he do it? She must've tried to stop him, and he killed her.
Simple as that.
But he cared for her.
I know he did.
Maybe, before he got his memories back.
Why would getting his memories back change anything? The time they spent together, the relationship they built He couldn't have just forgotten.
I'm guessing his old memories helped him put things in a different perspective, made him reorder his priorities.
Like you said, we've gotta stop thinking of him as Four.
But he told the Android, had her warn us, that the station was about to blow.
He didn't have to do that.
Part of him must still care.
Some small part, sure, but not enough to stop him from destroying that station, killing all those people and killing Nyx.
[beeping.]
What was that? Six? Life support.
It just shut down.
[beeping.]
[dark music.]
"Marauder," hey.
Tried to reach you earlier.
Yeah, we were dealing with a few issues.
How close are you to getting those engines back online? I'm not sure.
We're still working on it.
We're running out of time here.
- I know, we're - Life support took a hit.
Oxygen is running out.
We've got maybe 40 minutes left.
We'll come get you before that happens.
I promise.
All right, keep us updated.
Better go grab that oxygen tank in the back.
[air hissing.]
What the hell? Two, what's going on? Two? [knocking.]
I'm transferring most of the remaining oxygen to your section.
That and the tank should keep you alive long enough for them to get here.
What about you? Counting on my nanites.
We know for a fact that I can last at least 30 minutes without oxygen.
And what happens after that? You're still flesh and blood.
You can't last forever without oxygen.
I don't need forever.
You don't get to make this call.
Yeah, actually, I do.
You think I don't know what's going on? You're blaming yourself for what happened on the station, what happened to Nyx.
But you're wrong, and trading your life for mine isn't gonna make things right.
Two, talk to me.
[knocking.]
Two, talk to me! [distant clanging.]
I think the cavalry's here.
[sighs.]
Sit tight.
I'll try not to wander off.
[groaning.]
Come on.
[groans.]
Aah! [groaning.]
[gunfire.]
- [grunting.]
- [clanging.]
[suspenseful music.]
[beeping.]
[laser blasts.]
[grunts.]
[humming.]
[beeping.]
[clang.]
[whirring.]
Ah.
[grunting.]
Shh.
[beeping.]
You still awake? Yeah.
Just wanted to say you'll never know how truly sorry I am.
For what? Betraying you.
Turning you all in.
At the time At the time, it seemed like you were doing the right thing.
Or so I thought.
I guess we both learned that doing the right thing isn't always the right thing to do.
Bringing you in was wrong, but [sighs.]
Trying to stop the bomb, trying to stop a war Was just asking for trouble, even if we had succeeded.
We try to forget, but the truth is, who we were influences every decision we make.
Ever since we came out of stasis, we've been fighting against our pasts.
No matter what the odds, we've been trying to be better, and we keep failing.
No.
As long as we keep trying, we know we're better.
That's all that matters.
Sure, it'd be easier to be the bad guy, to not give a damn, but [solemn music.]
That's not who we are.
Not anymore.
[gasping.]
[rumbling.]
The shields are weakening.
How's it coming along? I think this is gonna work.
I'm gonna get the engines up in time.
Unfortunately, Five, I'm afraid that's unlikely.
The successive volleys from the Ferrous Corp destroyer have taken their toll.
I estimate total shield failure in less than 20 minutes.
[suspenseful music.]
Hey, I thought I'd lost you there.
[rumbling.]
I have an idea, but I will need your help to set up a neural link with the Ferrous Corp shuttle that's currently docked with the ship.
[suspenseful music.]
Okay.
You're dead.
I am.
I'm sorry.
For what? You can't seriously blame yourself for what happened to me.
[solemn music.]
On that very first day when we came out of stasis, I took command.
And the crew let me because they had faith in me.
They trusted me to look after them.
And you did.
Not well enough for One or for you.
[beeping.]
[dark music.]
You can get off me now.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- [grunts.]
What the hell was that thing? Security drone.
I'm guessing it wasn't properly shut down after they closed this place up.
Okay, I've got a plan.
- Let's hear it.
- Step one: Give me your gun.
- I don't think so.
- Are you kidding me? You've got two.
You can barely hold onto one, - let alone shoot.
- I can shoot just fine.
Yeah, it's aiming that's the problem.
Come on, man.
I just saved your life.
- You owe me one.
- And I saved your life back on that station.
We're even.
Oh, seriously? Oh, man.
I give you the gun, I have your word you'll give it back to me the second this is over? Yeah, sure.
I don't believe you.
Just give me the goddamn gun.
Oh, ouch, ouch, oh! Oh.
[dramatic music.]
[beeping.]
You can second guess yourself all you want, but the reality is, you and the crew of the "Raza" lead dangerous lives.
If I'd just let the GA deal with the corporations instead of risking my crew Who was I to think that we should be the ones to change things? Just because you failed doesn't mean it wasn't right to try.
The old Portia wouldn't have, but you're different.
You're a better person.
[scoffs.]
Being better is so much harder.
You're not even real.
Then a part of you knows that what I'm saying is true.
You're not perfect, but you're the best shot our friends have at survival.
So if I already know all this, why are you here? Why else? To say good-bye.
[whirring.]
[beeping.]
Come on, come on.
The destroyer is hailing the shuttle.
Ignore them.
They're threatening to open fire.
- Is it close enough yet? - Not yet.
Red Team One, I repeat, this is your final warning.
Requesting ident code.
They're opening fire.
[lasers blasting.]
How much closer? Almost within range.
[lasers blasting.]
Setting drives to go critical in three two one.
Target destroyed.
Nice work.
[beeping.]
[laser blasts.]
[whirring.]
[beeping.]
[gunshot.]
[powering down.]
[clang.]
Oh, come on.
Why are you looking at me? How is that my fault? You couldn't have taken the shot two seconds earlier? I wanted to make sure.
Can I have my gun back? Yeah.
This is the Galactic Authority.
[groans.]
Come forward and identify yourselves.
What's it gonna be? [tense music.]
This is the Galactic Authority.
- Come forward and - Lieutenant John Anders, Galactic Authority, Serious Crimes Division.
I came down in an escape pod after the destruction of EOS-7.
We heard weapons fire.
Yeah, yeah, facility's security drone was still active.
I had to take it out.
Are you alone? Yeah, yeah, it's just me.
I'm sorry we didn't have more time to get to know each other.
Me too.
I'm gonna miss you.
[somber music.]
We're not gonna make it.
Good-bye.
[whirring.]
Fonsei Teku, you stand before us, a free man for the first time in many years.
As Emperor, I offer you a life far from the politics and gamesmanship of the royal court, a home in the countryside and a considerable stipend that will allow you to live out your retirement in quiet retreat.
What say you, Teku? You are most generous, heika.
But, in order to receive these gifts, you must publicly recant.
Do you renounce your actions against the throne? No, I do not.
I am, and have always been, loyal to Zairon's rightful ruler and his father before him.
Not a duplicitous Empress.
Not a pretender to the throne.
Now and forever, only Emperor Ishida Ryo.
Well, you refusal to renounce your crimes have cost you my offer.
So be it.
[sighs, chuckles softly.]
So, instead, I'll make you another: A position in this court as my royal advisor.
What say you, Teku? [scoffs.]
I accept this great honor and vow to serve you and the court to the best of my abilities, to my dying breath.
[suspenseful music.]
Five told me I would find you here.
Ah, I wanted to grab a final cup before we rendezvous with my ship.
It's amazing, really.
Your android makes better coffee than anyone I know.
You should come by for her Spaghetti Saturdays.
[chuckles.]
Love to, but it looks like I'm going to be rather busy for the foreseeable future.
So what do you think? Which side of this corporate war is Mikkei going to fall on? Well, if we side with Ferrous Corp's enemies, we risk inciting the wrath of a very powerful opponent with no guarantee of victory.
On the other hand, if we back Ferrous Corp, once the other corporations have been defeated, we know it'll only be a matter of time before they come after us.
So? So we wait.
Continue to maintain a neutral position and try not to get drawn into the conflict.
And how long do you think that'll last? Ideally, long enough until both sides are so weakened beating the shit out of each other we can just swoop in and clear the table.
Spoken like a true opportunist.
Well, you do what's in the best interest of those you serve.
Even if what you do is morally questionable.
Especially if what you do is morally questionable.
It's easy to lead in the good times, much harder to do so in the bad.
You suffer losses and begin to question past decisions, and that's all right.
But, as a Commander, you can't let the responsibilities you bear weigh you down, because, if you do, you will never move forward.
Yeah, well, that's easier said than done.
Especially when the costs are personal.
[tense music.]
The costs are always personal.
Two, we've just received a coded transmission.
Is that my ship? No.
Patch it through to the mess.
Yes, Two.
[beep.]
"Raza," this is Lieutenant John Anders of the Galactic Authority.
How did you acquire our comm signature? I got it from a friend of yours.
He could use a lift.
I'm sending you his coordinates.
[whirring.]
It's chaos out there.
GA's gonna be spread thin.
I say we take advantage, hit a few places.
And I'm okay with that, but I think raiding and robbing should be a means to an end, not the end itself.
Like you said, we hit a few places.
We stock up food, weapons, whatever, but then we go after Ferrous Corp.
Put a crimp in their plans for galactic domination.
Without the Blink Drive? We don't need the Blink Drive to make a difference here.
It's not our fight, man.
If Ferrous Corp takes out the other corps, you can be damn sure they'll eventually make it our fight.
I made a casserole using some of the fresh vegetables we picked up on Corvus-8.
We'll have allies out there Rebels, the outer colonies, anyone who's ever been wronged by the corporations.
Mm, this is really good.
Thank you.
The secret ingredient is basil.
Mm.
And love.
But mostly basil.
Hey, sorry I'm late.
- Nice apron.
- Thank you.
I picked it up on our last station stopover, along with new boots and a wholly impractical but simply adorable hat.
Oh.
Well, where are you off to? Well, I was gonna go eat in my quarters.
I've got stuff to do.
You're the one who keeps saying we're family.
Family eats together.
[sighs.]
- Hey.
- Yeah? Oh, all right.
So, what about you? What do you think we should do next? Simple.
First, we take back the Blink Drive.
Then, we kill Ryo Ishida.
[whirring.]
[ominous music.]
[beeping.]
[beep.]
[beep.]
[hissing.]
[beeping.]
[beeping.]
Sarah, it's me, Five.
Welcome back.
The House of Ishida has an unbroken lineage dating back over 400 years.
While other dynasties and corporate overlords have come and gone, Ishida has remained.
Why do you think that is? Ryo! [gasps.]
Yes, Sensei? - Am I boring you? - No, Sensei.
Then please answer the question.
You do know what the question was, don't you? No.
I apologize.
So you're not interested in your family's bloodline? No.
I mean, yes.
Of course.
I it's just it's all in the past.
[scoffs.]
And what is that? The future? Yes.
It's the specs for the new research facility my father is building.
Zairon's best scientists will go there to develop weapons, shields, and engine technologies for the fleet.
There's no star system at these coordinates.
It's deep in the Lankar Nebula, where our enemies will never find it.
You know, Ryo, one day you'll be emperor, and for all our sakes, I hope by then you understand there's more to holding an empire together than weapons and ships.
[solemn music.]
[gasps.]
I got it.
I think I know where he took the Blink Drive.
[energy surging.]
[rock music.]
The coordinates place the research facility in the Lankar Nebula.
Difficult to access.
And even harder to find.
I think that's the whole idea.
Depending on how long we intend to stay in the vicinity, we'll have to divert power to the shields.
Hang on a sec.
We don't even know for sure the Blink Drive is there.
That station is the most important military research facility in the entire Ishida Empire.
At least, that's the way Four remembered it.
We know that he's trying to replicate the technology for his fleet.
Anyway, it's the only lead we have.
What kind of defenses can we expect? Impossible to say.
- Ships? - I doubt it.
The facility's obviously designed to withstand any radiation from the nebula.
And any ships that are in the area, they would just have the same problem as us.
They wouldn't stay for long.
They're obviously relying on stealth and secrecy.
Which gives us the advantage.
We take out their defenses, board the station, grab the device, and get the hell out of there before they have a chance to call for reinforcements.
Smash and grab.
It's just my style.
And then what? I mean, if we get the Drive, are we really gonna go after Four? [solemn music.]
He killed Nyx.
And you want revenge.
Isn't that what we do? We did it for One.
Jace Corso wasn't a member of this crew.
He wasn't one of us.
Four was.
Aw, hell, that just makes it worse.
Going after the drive, I get.
But putting our lives on the line to settle a score? So what're you saying? We just let him get away with it? He already did.
Nyx is dead.
And killing Four isn't gonna bring her back.
Misaki.
Congratulations.
Growing up, you were always strong and determined.
I'm not surprised you landed well.
When I was in training for the guard, I scored my first victory against a much bigger boy.
I celebrated with friends after the match.
But on my way home, he was waiting for me, along with two others.
They held me down and they beat me until I cried.
I told no one.
I simply resumed my training.
And even though I had improved, I learned my lesson and never won another match.
Misaki, I Years later, after graduation I chose a night.
And this time, it was I who waited for them as they headed home.
Their three blades against mine.
That much bigger boy, he'd grown even bigger.
[tense music.]
I put out one of his eyes.
And then I hamstrung the other two.
Oh, they didn't report me, of course.
Instead, they claimed they'd been set upon by a gang of thieves.
Their dreams of serving in the royal guard had ended, but at least their dignity was intact.
One Eye, he eventually did come after me.
They never found his body.
I look forward to working with you, Teku.
[suspenseful music.]
[digital beeping.]
Nearing the Ishida station.
All right, the Marauder's prepped and ready to go.
[lasers firing.]
[rumbling.]
[gasps.]
They're returning fire.
Shields are holding.
You didn't really think it was gonna be that easy, did ya? Hit them again.
Target weapons only.
Targeting weapons.
At this rate here, we'll never know what hit them.
Emperor.
- Forgive the intrusion.
- What is it? An emergency signal from the Lankar research station.
They're under attack.
That's impossible.
We're receiving visual telemetry from the station.
[lasers firing.]
That's it.
Their weapons are down.
Open a channel.
Go ahead.
Ishida research facility, this is the Raza.
Your weapons are down and you're at our mercy.
Open your main shuttle bay so we can board.
If you don't comply, we will destroy you.
We know who you are, Raza.
And we know why you're here.
Destroy us, and you lose your prize.
Transmission terminated.
Scan for compatible airlocks.
Understood.
By now, they've probably already called for help.
- We're on the clock here, boss.
- We've still got time.
You don't know how far away their closest ship is.
They could be here in minutes.
- Not likely.
- Come on! Just admit it, you're winging it on this one.
It's not a criticism.
I kinda like it.
Even if we find a compatible airlock for the Marauder to dock, how do we get the inner doors open? Trust me, kid, that's the easy part.
Emperor.
Dr.
Borsa, Dr.
Hajek, report your status.
We're under attack.
Weapons are down.
External sensors are damaged.
Other than that, the station is intact.
They're after the Blink Drive, aren't they? - Of course.
- But how did they find us? At the moment, it's hardly relevant.
They stopped firing.
They know they can't risk it.
How many outer airlocks on a station like this one? Four.
I want armed teams at each one of them immediately.
Emperor, we don't have enough manpower to Do it! Now.
Yes, Emperor.
[digital beeping.]
Welcome aboard, Raza.
[engines humming.]
All right, we're docked.
Once we get through the first line of defense, they might get the bright idea to double back for the Marauder.
I'll be ready.
[power turns down.]
[suspenseful music.]
[all groaning.]
We're in.
[alarm blaring.]
One of the other airlocks has just been breached.
What about the Blink Drive? Is it operational? Well, is it? Theoretically, yes.
But we don't yet fully understand how to control it.
It certainly hasn't been calibrated for anything as large as this station.
Well then, I suggest you calibrate it quickly, because you don't have time to wait for reinforcements.
If you take the station back to Zairon, you won't have to.
This is a clone body.
I don't care if it gets destroyed.
I doubt you feel the same way about your own.
And make no mistake.
The people who are coming won't hesitate to kill you to get what they want.
I'm picking up some unusual energy readings emanating from the station.
Something to do with the nebula, maybe? I don't think so.
Wait a minute.
You don't think they would try to use the drive, do you? [digital beeping.]
[dramatic music.]
Guys, we've got a slight problem here.
What's wrong? I-I don't even know how to describe it.
Did we make it back to Zairon? Emperor, it's my duty to inform you that we have failed.
We're still in the nebula? No.
Then where are we? I don't know.
The nebula is gone.
So are the stars So's everything.
It's just empty, white nothing, all around us.
Has he been drinking? What do you mean "nothing"? I know it sounds crazy, but I'm staring at it right now.
Blink Drive.
They used it and screwed up.
Sounds familiar.
This isn't some alternate reality.
This is just nowhere.
Raza, do you read? Raza, do you copy? I told you, there's nothing out there.
Not even the Raza.
The Blink Drive got us here.
My bet is, it'll get us back.
- [gun whirs.]
- Mission stays the same.
Go for the drive.
Roger that.
Near as I can tell, we're in a pocket of null space not much larger than the station, possibly created by the drive itself as a result of insufficient power to attain our original destination coordinates.
Like a buffer zone between where we were and where we were supposed to go, only in interdimensional space.
Can the Blink Drive get us back? Possibly but without spatial reference points, I would have no idea how to set up the navigational computer.
Where do you suppose they went? The most likely place would be Zairon.
Then we have to go after them.
Even if we're right, it would take us six days to get there.
And there would be an overwhelming force waiting for us.
Well, we have to do something.
What? I'm detecting an anomalous energy signature.
It's coming from the position recently vacated by the station.
Show me.
[digital beeping.]
Have you ever seen anything like this before? No.
Normal Blink Drive operation leaves very little in the way of residual energy.
Nothing compared to this.
Maybe it wasn't a normal jump.
Maybe they didn't go where they wanted to.
Maybe it's simply a malfunction in the system array as a result of continued exposure within the nebula.
All right, I'll go down and check the array.
In the meantime, run that data through every analytical model you have.
If it can tell us anything about what happened or where they went, I want to know.
Understood.
[exhales softly.]
[gasps.]
All right, Das, how's it coming with that coil, huh? You called me Das.
You said you didn't want me to call you Emily.
You got something else in mind? I know this place.
Yeah, well, you've been working here part-time for the past three weeks.
I certainly hope so.
[sighs.]
Hey, look, uh I know this stuff is complicated, but, uh you got a good head on your shoulders.
Not like those other kids you hang out with.
This is one of my memories.
You want me to teach you? I'm happy to do it.
Hell, I suppose I'd do it just for the company.
But, uh, if you're not willing to put the work in, you really are just wasting your time.
So, uh, what do you say we get back to it, huh? Sit down, sit down.
Look at this.
Watch this.
[mechanical whirring.]
C-squad, report.
C-squad, what's your status? What's happening? Nothing you need to concern yourself with.
They've gotten past our defenses, haven't they? I told you we weren't equipped for this.
I told you the Blink Drive wasn't ready! Watch your tone, Doctor.
This may be a clone body, but when I transfer back, the real emperor will remember everything that happened here.
What can we do? They're going to kill us.
You're afraid.
As you should be.
But don't let it sway you from the task at hand.
I'll buy you as much time as I can.
You don't even have a weapon.
It wouldn't make a difference.
Emperor, I'm afraid we have another problem.
You remember how I told you that this null space bubble that we're in was not much larger than the station? - Yes.
- Well, I know that because I've been sending out radar signals to help to find the outer edges of the bubble.
So? So it now appears that it's shrinking Collapsing in on itself.
My God.
When we first arrived here, it was over three kilometers in diameter.
It's now less than two and half.
How much longer until it breaches the outer edges of the station? If the current rate of collapse continues, less than 30 minutes.
Are you sure? I've double-checked the reading.
Whatever that white wall out there is, it's coming towards us.
Well, we've got to move.
Get the Blink Drive and get the hell out of here before it hits.
[digital beeping.]
[tense music.]
Son of a bitch.
Two, Three.
Welcome.
Okay, uh, try it now.
[platform humming, whirring.]
All right, watch.
[whirring intensifies.]
Ha! Like I told you, kid.
Antigravitational fields and inertial dampeners The key to modern space travel.
What about FTL? Well, that too.
But it's a little above my pay grade.
[power dies.]
You know, uh, there's only so much I can teach you here.
You want to learn for real, get certified.
You need to go to a good tech college.
I can't afford that.
Yeah, well, I, uh I was thinking, uh maybe I could help out with the tuition.
If you're interested.
Really? Yeah.
You could pay me back by By helping out around here.
Hell, I don't know.
Maybe even take over one day.
I never never had kids of my own, so, you know I-I don't know what to say.
It ain't glamorous, but it's an honest living.
Not like what your friends are doing out there on the street.
They're not so bad.
Hey, I-I'm not judging.
But sooner or later, the system's gonna catch up with them and chew them up.
But you you got something special.
You you got a spark.
And I, uh I hate to see that go to waste.
[solemn music.]
Five, what's the status of the sensor array? Five, do you read me? Five, come in.
Five, please respond.
Hey, yeah, yeah, I'm here.
- Sorry.
- Is everything all right? Uh, everything's fine.
What about the array? Um, still working on it.
Just give me a few minutes.
[tense music.]
We're here for the Blink Drive.
Where is it? It's in a lab, in the central hub of the station.
But I'm afraid this is as close as you're going to get to it.
If we have to move through you, don't think we'll hesitate.
Of course not.
But shooting me would hardly make a difference.
I've initiated a full lockdown of the station, magnetically sealing all bulkheads.
We already blew through your airlock.
We can blow through those doors too.
Maybe.
But there are three more sets just like this one between here and the lab.
How much explosives did you bring? Shit.
Now, do you have any idea where we are? What's happened to us? You used the Blink Drive with unexpected results.
It got us here, and it can get us back.
So stand down and let my scientists finish recalibrating the drive.
When we return to Zairon, you'll be released.
- [scoffs softly.]
- You have my word.
Like that's worth anything.
- Emperor, can you hear me? - Go ahead.
The edge of the null space bubble has reached the outer limbs of the station.
What effect is it having? It's annihilating everything in its path.
What about decompression? It's not a vacuum.
It's just a wall of nothingness.
Guys, we've got a new problem here.
Let me guess: the outer edges of the station are being eaten away.
If it keeps coming, pretty soon I'm gonna have a big problem.
If we lose the Marauder, there's no way off this station, even if we get back to normal space.
Emperor, what about the other scientists? What about them? They're all in a hab pod on the outer limb of the station.
They don't have much time.
You have to release the lockdown so they can move out and into the inner hub.
I'm sorry, Dr.
Borsa.
I can't do that.
If I did that, there'd be nothing to stop these intruders from making their way to the lab, shooting you both, and taking the Blink Drive for themselves.
Four.
Ryo.
It doesn't have to be like this.
Drop the lockdown, let Six take the Marauder into the central hub docking bay.
We will get your people off.
No.
We've calibrated the drive to the Marauder's engines before.
We can make this work.
It's our best chance to get everyone out of here.
Then you would have the drive, and I can't allow that.
They're your own people.
And their sacrifices will be remembered.
You are one cold bastard, you know that? There's nothing we can do or say to make you change your mind? No, I'm afraid not.
Then you're no good to us, are you? [gunshot.]
[groans.]
[suspenseful music.]
- Shit.
- It was a clone.
Emperor, are you all right? I'm afraid we had to dispose of your emperor's clone.
You're the one who attacked the station.
Yes.
But I think we're a little beyond that right now.
If we're gonna make it out of here alive, we need to work together.
Don't listen to her.
You heard what I said about our shuttle.
It's the truth.
We've adapted the Blink Drive to its engines before, and we can do it again.
It's our best chance at getting everyone off this station, but we need your help.
We're running out of time, Doctor.
What's it gonna be? You can't trust them.
It's a trick.
I need an answer.
[digital beeping.]
Even if I wanted to help you, I can't terminate the lockdown.
The Emperor used his personal command code.
There's got to be something you can do, some way to work around it.
I'm guessing you know this station better than anyone.
How do I know I can trust you? How about this: do we have a clear path from here to the habitation pod? I believe so.
We've got explosives.
We'll head back, blow the bulkhead door, and get your colleagues out of there.
In the meantime, you find a way to end the lockdown so we can get the shuttle to the central hub.
We'll get everyone off the station that way.
[digital beeping.]
The Emperor initiated the lockdown.
It can only be terminated on his command.
The Emperor isn't here.
This could be our best chance.
You sure about this? Four's right, we don't have enough explosives to blow through three sets of doors.
Assuming that wasn't a bluff.
What if the lab is right behind those doors? I don't think we have enough time to do this by force.
We have to get them to trust us.
Do we have a deal? [digital beeping.]
All right.
I'll try to give you the most direct path to the hab.
You can't do this! I'm not gonna let those people die.
It is their duty and ours.
We're not soldiers.
You're a traitor.
And you're a fool.
[tense music.]
The array checked out.
Everything's fine.
Whatever the anomaly is, it's for real.
The most peculiar thing is that it persists, without any apparent source.
At least not in our space-time.
Wait a minute.
What if when they went through, they created a kind of rip or tear between here and wherever they went? That's what the anomaly is, just one end of the tear.
An interesting theory.
If it's true, then as long as the tear persists, we may be able to use it to trace where they went.
Exactly.
I'm on my way back up.
[gasping.]
Five, come in.
[water dripping.]
Shit.
Not again.
[sighs.]
Five? We're receiving an incoming subspace transmission.
[digital beeping.]
Five, come in.
[beeping continues.]
Android, it's good to see you again.
Four.
Or should I call you Emperor Ryo Ishida? Just Ryo would be fine.
What do you want? [chuckles.]
Straight to the point.
Excellent.
I know you attacked my research station.
Yes.
I sent in a transit clone to assess the situation but lost contact.
In fact, we lost all contact with the station.
I'm not surprised.
Of course, this could be due to any number of reasons, but the most obvious is, you killed everyone onboard.
That would be one possibility.
And yet somehow I doubt it.
Care to enlighten me? Why should I? [chuckles softly.]
Maybe it would be best if I talked to a human crew member.
Let me speak with Two.
She's not available.
How about Nyx? You want to speak to Nyx? I know we didn't end on the best of terms, but You killed her.
[solemn music.]
What are you talking about? I found her body, Ryo.
After you came onboard and stole the Blink Drive.
[suspenseful music.]
That's it.
Hab pod is on the other side.
Might want to step back for this.
[gate whirring.]
Wait.
Wait a minute.
We're too late.
Protein bar? Shooting people really works up an appetite.
[crackling.]
This is not something I want to mess with.
[power dies.]
Oh, what now? No.
No, this is good.
This is just what we need.
Six, come in.
Guys, I don't know how much longer I can stay here.
That wall of whatever it is It's only a few meters away from the Marauder.
Main power just went out in the station.
The force field blocking the shuttle bay should be down too.
Roger that.
I'm on my way.
Meet you on the inside.
- Is he gone? - Who? Who do you think? The old man.
He has a name, you know.
Whatever.
Okay, come, sit.
What do you want, Lyra? I came here to tell you we're heading out All of us.
What are you talking about? Remember that friend I mentioned, T.
J.
? The one on the station in the Mirzam system? - Yeah.
- He's got a sweet setup there, and he's got room for more.
The place is full of fat, rich tourists.
Easy marks.
He gives a percentage to the maintenance staff, and they let him bunk out in the air vents.
[laughs.]
Sounds amazing.
Anything's better than this place.
We're leaving tomorrow.
Tomorrow? Yeah, we bribed a couple of crewmen on a long-range freighter.
It's nine days in the hold, but it'll get us there.
Well, I-I can't just leave.
Why not? [stammering.]
Because of the old guy? His name is Baines.
Okay, look I know you think he's your friend 'cause he's teaching you how to fix all this junk, but you can't trust him.
[dark music.]
Why not? I saw him yesterday.
Out by the market.
He was looking a little sketchy, so I decided to follow him.
- Lyra - He went straight to the G.
A.
detachment.
He was talking to the Sergeant.
Are you sure? I saw it with my own eyes.
Now what's a guy like that doing talking to the G.
A.
? He's gonna rat us out.
No, you don't know that.
Yeah, well, we're not gonna stick around and take the chance.
The shuttle leaves at dawn.
Are you coming or not? [exhales softly.]
I'm sorry.
I had to give you a stimulant.
How did I get in here? I found you passed out.
You were unresponsive.
I was in one of my memories.
Although it was more like a dream.
Has this ever happened before? I think maybe earlier today.
- We should run a scan.
- No, there's no time for that.
What about the anomaly? We need to find the others.
- I'm working on it.
- What do you mean? I've been sending a modulated beam of tachyons into the rift.
If it really is a connection between here and wherever they went, they should be able to detect it.
I'm monitoring for a response.
That's it? For now, it's all we can do.
[tense music.]
[grunts.]
Puncture wounds to the neck.
He bled out.
So where's the killer? That's not the only thing that's missing.
The Blink Drive's gone.
Accessible parts of the station are shrinking fast.
Whoever took the drive couldn't have gone far.
[digital beeping.]
[tense music.]
Wait.
What the hell is that? - [gasps.]
- Hey! [wall whirring.]
That's far enough.
Come any closer, and I'll throw it in.
You don't want to destroy it any more than we do.
I think the Emperor would rather see it destroyed than fall back into your hands.
You willing to die for that? An honorable death is better than a dishonorable life.
- Okay.
- [gunshot.]
[gasps.]
[gunshot.]
All right, let's get that thing back to the Marauder.
So? You appear to be suffering from cascading synaptic failure in several areas of your brain associated with the processing of long-term memory.
What's causing it? Unknown.
But if I had to guess The mind probe.
We may have used it one too many times.
I have persistently warned everyone of the dangers involved.
I know.
It's not your fault.
It's gonna get worse, isn't it? The fugue states you've been experiencing will most likely increase in duration and frequency until they become permanent.
[dark music.]
Is there anything we can do? That's it.
[distant rumbling.]
Okay.
System's online.
Let's get the hell out of here.
- Only one problem.
- What? I've got no coordinates to feed into the nav system.
What difference does it make? Just put in anything.
- Are you serious? - Yeah.
Wait, hold on.
What is that? [electronic warbling.]
Some sort of radioactive pulse.
Probably just a side effect of the collapsing bubble.
The modulation is irregular but repeating.
You're right.
It's not a natural phenomenon.
So what, some kind of signal? It's a way out.
Target the point of origin.
And if we're wrong, we end up in a pulsar.
In about 30 seconds, it's not gonna matter.
All right, here we go.
[rumbling, warbling intensify.]
[exciting music.]
- [laughing.]
- It worked.
We're back.
Marauder, this is the Raza.
Do you read? We read you loud and clear.
It's great to hear your voice.
I assume we have you to thank for that signal? A modulated tachyon pulse used as an inter-dimensional lifeline.
That's pretty brilliant.
Well, I am an android.
Anyway, I suggest we postpone the celebration, as there are several Ishida cruisers rapidly approaching our position.
Roger that.
Coming to you.
[door opens.]
She collapsed for a third time just before the Marauder reappeared.
I believe the best course of action would be to attempt to recreate the conditions that caused the initial mind wipe, with some modifications.
You gotta be kidding.
The memories are effectively superseding her conscious mind.
They need to be isolated Walled off as yours have been.
What about her new memories? The ones that she made after we came out of stasis? I'll do my best to protect and insulate all new memories.
But I can't guarantee success.
There is a significant chance that she may lose some if not all of them.
And without a clean neural imprint to work from, they'll be inaccessible for the rest of her life.
[somber music.]
- Did you explain this to her? - I did.
Before she lost consciousness.
She said if it was the only way, we had to take the chance.
[sighs.]
[gasps.]
[sighs.]
Going somewhere? My friends are getting on a shuttle.
I'm going with them.
Where to? Off this rock.
Aw, Das Das Emily, look, I understand you don't see a future for yourself here I know you went to the G.
A.
What were you trying to do, get my friends arrested so they would stop being a bad influence on me? No, that's not it at all.
I It doesn't matter.
None of this is real anyway.
It's a dream.
Based on a memory.
[dark music.]
See what I mean? The Android's going through with the procedure.
[low humming.]
You were obviously kind to me.
I'm sorry if I hurt you.
But I can't change anything now.
Maybe not.
But you at least deserve to know the truth.
What are you talking about? I wasn't trying to rat your friends out.
I was trying to get information on your family.
I know what happened.
My parents were killed in an accident.
No, they didn't tell you everything.
They didn't tell you that you have a sister.
- What? - She was adopted when you were still a baby.
A wealthy family.
Influential.
- She got lucky.
- What's her name? How can I find her? No, no, not yet! Wait! I'm so sorry.
If we'd known You couldn't have done anything different.
It had to be done.
It's just frustrating.
I was finally about to learn something useful from my past.
You did learn something.
You know she's out there.
And, you know, one day you're gonna find her.
What about the Blink Drive? [sighs.]
Well the Android thinks the Ishida scientist tampered with it while trying to figure it out.
We got lucky with the Marauder.
But until we know for sure it's functioning properly, there's no way I'm hooking it up to the ship.
Well, at least Four doesn't have it anymore.
So that's a good thing, right? [solemn music.]
Misaki! Heika, we have news from the front.
The enemy has launched a surprise attack [screams.]
You killed Nyx.
Yes.
After I ordered you to use non-lethal force.
Why? Because she was a distraction.
Your feelings for her were a weakness.
[tense music.]
The people on that ship were your friends, your family even, for a time.
I understand that.
But none of them can possibly grasp what you must do now to save the House of Ishida.
Not like I do.
Take my life if you will.
I offer it gladly, knowing that what I did was for the good of the Empire.
But know this.
One day, sooner or later, you will have to deal with them.
