Hawaii Five-O (1968) s01e13 Episode Script

Deathwatch

I'll only be a minute, honey.
Don't worry, I'll amuse myself.
Are you sure you're all right? I'm fine.
Get going.
Working on Sunday, huh, Mr.
Cadison? Charlie? Charlie? No! Charlie! ( upbeat surf theme playing ) Kono, who's in there? Danny, prosecutor, Pete Willis, Chin.
Anything? A rough one, boss.
Hold it.
Okay.
Somebody else is in there too.
His wife, Helen.
What did they get, Pete? Everything.
Matsukino's gun? The one solid piece of evidence that nailed Matsukino cold.
I can forget that, Steve.
But how do we forget Charlie Cadison? We don't.
Let me have it, Danno.
No amateur.
Sunday afternoon, went for the alarm system first, got into this thing like a kid into a cookie jar.
I bet they don't find anything on that window, either.
Local talent? Educated guess would say a boxman from the mainland.
Exits blocked? H.
P.
D.
's got everything closed down.
Where's Helen? She's in there with Chin.
What can I say, Helen? What can I say? He was only going for a minute just to pick up some transcripts for the Matsukino file.
He was only gonna be gone a minute.
A minute, Steve.
A minute out of a lifetime.
Easy.
Easy.
He cared so much about these islands.
So fresh, clean.
And convicting Matsukino was so important to him.
He was a good lawyer and a good husband.
Now he's gone.
( gasps ) Helen? It's early.
What is it? Steve, it's too early.
Helen? Please.
I don't want to lose our baby too.
Chin.
Chin! Get an ambulance.
Danno, I want Matsukino.
Pick him up.
How many times you gotta tell this clown, huh? Hey, not too much vermouth.
Sorry, Mr.
Matsukino.
There's a call for you.
Yeah? Beautiful, baby.
Beautiful.
Bingo.
He got it? Like on a Sunday afternoon downtown.
What's eating you, Harry? Next Tuesday, your trial.
I'm seeing your prosecutor when the judge asks him: "What are you gonna use for evidence?" Yeah, that's the cool part of the law.
They gotta have evidence to convict you, to protect the, uh, innocent.
Sounds pretty funny.
How about repeating it for us on the way over to Five-0? You dig what this man's saying, Harry? It sounds like a roust, or maybe we didn't hear you right.
You read me loud and clear, Cardonus.
We've got a few things we'd like to talk over with you.
Let's go.
Man, the kind of scene you wanna make, you gotta have charges.
Isn't that right, Harry? Yeah.
Spill the charges, fuzz, or knock off.
Yeah.
That's right, man.
Charges.
That's what you gotta have.
You dig? Yeah, I dig.
How's murder grab you? Ten years you've been trying to put this island in your pocket.
But when you killed Charlie Cadison, you blew it.
Man, you're lovely, you know? Lovely.
I gotta give a little speech to the businessman's association Tuesday.
Why don't you write it for me? How about a farewell speech? Because Tuesday afternoon, you'll be on your way to Oahu State Prison for life.
Man, I don't remember no appointment at Oahu State Prison Tuesday afternoon, do you, Harry? Beats me, Joe.
We got nothing going Tuesday that I know of.
Couple of minutes at court in the morning, that's all.
Oh, that's nothing, nothing.
Hey, man, it's getting late.
Yeah, you spoke your piece and it was pretty, but we got something better to do.
Let's go back to the joint.
Sit down.
I'm not finished.
Now, look, man.
We gave you name, rank, serial number.
You know you got nothing on us about what happened to the prosecuting attorney, so why don't you--? I said sit down.
Now, listen.
You're gonna walk into that courtroom Tuesday and you're never coming back out.
We're gonna nail you for killing that bookie, with or without the gun.
That's murder number one.
But if that doesn't work, I'll spend every resource of this office to convict you for the brutal murder of my friend, Charlie Cadison.
That much I promise you.
If it's the last thing I do at this desk, I'll see you in Oahu State Prison for life.
Now get out.
Oh, man, you sure got a burn.
Come on, Harry.
Let's split.
Yeah, let's go-- You, Matsukino, get out.
You, sit down.
What are you trying to pull, McGarrett? I said sit down.
He don't know nothing.
Kono, show him the way.
You play it cool, baby.
Don't worry, pal.
He ain't playing no games with me.
He better not.
I'll have you out of here with a writ in 15 minutes.
Meet me back at the joint.
Okay.
Tell my gal not to wander off.
We got plans.
Yeah.
It's your deck, McGarrett.
Deal.
You've been closer to him than anybody, Cardonus.
Ever seen him like this before? Like what? Scared.
Joe Matsukino, king of the rackets, is running scared.
That kind of puts you on the spot, doesn't it? I don't know what you're fishing for, but you're coming up empty.
I was just thinking, supposing you were Joe Matsukino, standing trial for murder number one.
You import a boxman to get rid of a gun and a prosecutor.
He scores.
That leaves only one other thing to worry about, right? Look, you're wasting my time.
Say what you gotta say and let me go.
I got a date.
Could be with a couple of .
38 caliber slugs.
Now, what's that supposed to mean? When a man runs scared, he'll get rid of any possible threat.
You're a threat to him, Cardonus.
You're the only man alive who knows as much about him as he does himself.
Now, what would you do if you were in Matsukino's shoes? Huh? Just exactly what he is gonna do.
Raise a stink to high heaven about the police rousting innocent citizens.
Now, that's the last word you're gonna hear from me.
Book me or let me loose.
No hurry, Cardonus.
Just sit down and relax.
There'll be a man along with a writ to spring you in a little while.
Meanwhile, use the time to think about what I said.
Who knows? It might even save your life.
Welcome home, baby.
Welcome home.
We've been saving some bubbly for the occasion.
Oh, yeah? Pour for the man, chickie.
He looks like he could use a belt.
Lousy cop.
They got nothing and they know it.
They're just throwing their weight around, that's all.
Man, that McGarrett.
He sure turned the burner up high on the grill for you, didn't he? He didn't turn up nothing.
I just sat there waiting for the writ to come in, that's all.
You just sat there? Oh, come on, Harry.
You gotta be putting me on.
No, no, I'm leveling with you.
I just sat there.
No questions, no nothing.
Ain't that something.
Ain't that something.
McGarrett trying to use my pal Harry to pin me to the wall.
Nobody's gonna pin nobody while you and me are swinging, Harry.
That right? Yeah.
He sure blew most of the day for us.
Come on, baby, there's still a little time left to turn on the world.
Uh, thanks, pal.
Grab the check, will you? I'll see you later.
You bet, Joe.
Here, honey.
Have an hors d'oeuvre.
None of that, babe.
You know that stuff's poison to me.
I feel like going for a dip.
Let's go swimming.
Like this? Well, where's that sexy little two-piece thing I bought for you? Harry, it's at home.
Well, get off your duff and go get it.
Give me the keys.
Here.
( screaming ) Check airport security again.
Maybe they've turned up something.
Right away.
Morning, May.
Morning, Danny.
He still in there? Hasn't left all night.
Figures.
Well, what does the doctor say? Yes, I know that, honey.
Yes.
Well, will you ask him to call me when there's any sign one way or the other? No, not "Garretty", honey, it's McGarrett.
M-C-G-A-R-R-E-T-T.
McGarrett, Five-0.
You got it? Yeah, thank you.
Helen Cadison? They don't know if they can save the baby or not.
Kono here? Yeah, he's outside with Chin.
Will you send Kono and Chin in, love, as soon as possible? Give me a rundown on the bombing, Danno.
Common blasting caps and dynamite wired to the ignition.
No foreign prints on what was left of the car.
Nobody saw anyone near the car from the time Cardonus drove it up to the hotel, right up to the big bang.
Victim, Holly Flick.
Age 18.
Dead on arrival.
Eighteen.
Short life.
How do these kids of 18 get mixed up with these bums, will you tell me? Maybe they're looking for something.
Yeah, trouble.
Where's Cardonus? He left the hotel before H.
P.
D.
got there, and no sign of him since.
What do you hear, Kono? Not a rumble.
Chin? Struck out with all of my sources.
Not a trace of him on the island.
Well, that gives us three choices: Either he's dead, gone, or in hiding.
I wonder if my play yesterday pushed Matsukino into it.
Come on, Steve.
Matsukino makes up his mind to kill, he kills.
All you did was offer Cardonus an out.
He didn't take it.
What about the boxman who got Charlie? We've checked on every known local.
Nothing.
If he was an import, it would be too quick for the word to get out.
Can't be quick enough.
We've only got until tomorrow.
Danno, that's your assignment.
Put the pressure on every source, every informant we have on this rock.
I want him in 24 hours.
Kono, you work with him.
Yes, sir.
Chin, you work liaison with H.
P.
D.
Find Cardonus.
If Matsukino gets to him before we do, he's dead.
Nice big fat tomato juice, sweetie.
Lots of ice, shot of bitters.
It's a nice day, huh? Hello, Joe.
Harry, baby.
Kind of shakes you up a little bit, don't it? I don't know what you're talking, Harry.
You know what I'm talking about.
Big Joe Matsukino.
You've turned gutless.
I swear to you, Harry.
What's bugging you? You, Joe.
It wasn't enough for you that you got the gun, that you got the prosecuting attorney rubbed out.
Number one, number two is not enough for you.
You had to have number three.
Man, you've really flipped out this morning.
What is this one, two, three--? The car job.
That's number three.
What about your pal, your buddy? Harry-- Over ten years I've been with you.
Ten years, Joe.
I wasn't planning no double-cross.
But you run everything upside down and backwards.
And it comes out the same.
One, two, three.
All right, I'll tell you what I'm gonna do.
I'm gonna blow the whistle on you! You're making a mistake, Harry.
No, no.
You're the one that's making the mistake, Joe.
Yeah.
That's what I said.
I'll give you the whole works.
Whatever you want.
No deals, Cardonus.
No deals.
You can't make a deal with a dead man, and that's what I am, a walking dead man.
All I want before I go is to lay it on Matsukino so hard that he'll fry in hell.
Then you testify at his trial tomorrow.
Forget the trial.
I'll give it all to you now.
Even more than you want.
For ten years, I kept his books.
I'll give you names, addresses.
I'll wrap up that organization in a bag for you.
No good.
No good.
Your deposition is gonna help, but it's not enough.
You've gotta swear to it on the witness stand, or Matsukino goes home free.
Are you kidding? The whole lousy joke's on me.
Don't you understand? I'm gonna be dead long before the trial.
The trial's tomorrow morning.
But for me, there's no tomorrow! My time stopped when he decided to kill me.
When I walk that door, I'm a dead man.
You'll get protection.
Oh, what are you, kidding me? Twenty-four hours a day for 10 years, I lived with him.
Nobody could ever stop him when he decided to kill somebody.
Do you wanna bet? That's a sucker's bet.
You might as well throw your money away to charity.
What have you got to lose? You said yourself Matsukino's gonna knock you off.
What a bet.
I lose, I win, I win, I lose.
You cops.
How you figuring to pull it off? Nothing fancy.
Protective custody.
Where? We'll find a place.
Oh, you don't stand a prayer.
Do you wanna bet or don't you? All right, you're on.
Alec.
Six months ago, this bum was in state prison.
Matsukino wanted him to go, he went.
In the middle of a tight lockup.
So you jokers are gonna give me security in a Waikiki hotel? Oh, I see you got the palace guard out, huh? Come on.
We got the TV intercom set up.
There's a camera covering every entrance and exit on this floor.
Everybody else is cleared out of this wing of the hotel.
Boy Scout stuff.
In there.
The roof? Yeah, all the way down.
Some kind of a cat, this boy.
You get up there and check it out.
You find out how he got up there and where the leak in security was and block it.
No more leaks, you understand? If you need more men, Chief Dan will supply them.
When I say I want this wing buttoned up tight, I mean tight.
Okay, boss.
Call the medical examiner.
That's Jerry Apu.
Pretty good gun.
Sit down and shut up.
Matsukino's got plenty more on his payroll.
One will miss, another won't.
We'll see.
Like I said, you talk like a Boy Scout.
You ain't got a chance.
I'll be long dead by morning.
Let me set you straight, Cardonus.
You're gonna live, you're gonna be at that trial tomorrow.
Now, whether you talk or not is up to you, but you're gonna be there.
Not a prayer.
Not a single, solitary prayer.
Hello, Mr.
Williams.
What's this, Oscar? What's what? It looks like a wallet to me.
Yeah? Yeah, I guess that's what it is, all right.
It's a wallet.
If I had a suspicious mind, I might wonder whether it belonged to you or to that gentleman swimming out there.
Now, what would I be doing with somebody else's wallet? You might have seen it drop out of his pocket, picked it up off the beach.
Just about to return it to him.
Yeah, yeah, that's just what I was gonna do.
How'd you know about that, huh? Well, knowing your reputation and having been here all the time, I could say you lifted it out of his pocket.
Aw, you know me better than that.
You know I wouldn't do something like that.
I'll prove it to you.
Give it back and I'll-- I was just thinking, Oscar, being a boxman, if you were heisting-- Not that I said you were, mind you.
But if you were, it could be because the pickings are pretty lean in your own profession.
I wouldn't know anything about that, Mr.
Williams.
Could be they're importing boxmen from the mainland.
Don't know what you talk about.
You did hear about the prosecutor who was killed? What prosecutor? Where? I didn't hear anything, Mr.
Williams.
It's the truth.
I swear it.
I don't know anything.
Now, give me back the wallet.
I'll return it to the nice fellow there.
What do you think, Kono? Could be he's telling the truth, he just picked the wallet off the beach.
Could be he took it out of that man's pocket.
It could be he does know something about that boxman from the mainland, just doesn't remember him.
How about that, Oscar? We'll allow you to do your good deed for the day.
Take this wallet back.
You think it might jog your memory? I'll tell you, Mr.
Williams.
Maybe I did hear something.
You could do better than that, Oscar, can't you? Yeah.
Yeah, I think maybe I can.
That's the joint, right over there.
On that side.
A man came from the mainland, like I told you.
There was some talk along the street.
I don't know anything more.
So help me, Mr.
Williams, I don't know anything more.
You'd better be right, Oscar.
No rear entrance.
You check out the backroom, huh? Mainliner? Yeah.
You find anything? No, nothing.
I'll get the lab boys.
You start on the street.
Nail every informant we've ever used.
If our boxman needs a fix as badly as I think he does, some pusher will have to supply him.
We better find that pusher.
Mrs.
Helen Cadison's room, please.
Cadison? That's the P.
A.
's wife, huh? His widow.
Well, that's the breaks of the game.
What d--? Yes.
Yes, this is Steve McGarrett, Five-0.
Is it possible to speak with Mrs.
Cadison? I'm afraid not.
She's just dozing off.
What is her condition, nurse? Oh, she's fine.
Doing just fine, Mr.
McGarrett.
Does that mean that you, uh, can't talk at the moment? Yes, sir.
That's right.
Has there been any improvement? No, I wouldn't say that.
Well, is she worse? Yes, I think that would be a lot closer to it.
Charlie.
I'm sorry, I can't talk right now.
All right.
You have my number there.
The doctor has it too.
If there's any change, please call me.
Yes, I'll do that.
Goodbye.
It's getting to you, huh, McGarrett? I don't blame you.
If you want to call off the bet, I'll give you a break.
I've been in the rackets long enough to know you can't buck the odds.
When a pro is gunning for you, he's gonna get you.
Like he gave it to Charlie Cadison, huh? Sure.
Cadison.
He was a dead duck the minute I picked up the phone and called the mainland for the boxman.
When I set that contract, Matsukino and me just sat back and relaxed.
You set that contract? Hey, what do you think you're doing, huh? You got that boxman to come here and gun down Charlie Cadison? Maybe not as neat as it worked out.
Cadison stuck his head in at the right time and our boy got two birds with one stone.
And I have to keep you alive.
I've gotta protect you so you can walk into that courtroom tomorrow.
Yeah, you got Yeah, you know, that's pretty funny, huh? I get the boxman for Matsukino, and he rubs out your buddy, and you gotta stay here with me, like a pigeon, waiting for Matsukino to knock me off and maybe you too.
Shut up.
That's pretty funny-- Shut up! Okay.
Okay, pal.
But you gotta admit, some things are pretty funny.
I think that's pretty funny.
You gotta What's his name? Who? The boxman.
What's his name? The only thing I remember is Murph.
Murphy? Yeah.
Give me a description.
Well, a guy like that, you see him maybe once, or maybe not at all.
You saw him? Sure, sure.
Well, then, what does he look like? Oh, well, who knows? About medium height, medium weight.
A kind of a medium type of guy.
H.
P.
D.
? Communications.
Yeah, this is McGarrett, Five-0.
Put out an APB, suspect known as Murph.
Probably Murphy.
Medium height, medium weight.
Hang on.
Haole? Yeah.
Yeah, Caucasian.
What's his age? Color of hair and eyes? Oh, maybe 30, 35.
His hair is getting kind of thin on top here.
I didn't see his eyes.
Thirty to 35, receding hairline.
We know he's a junkie.
Where's he been getting his stuff? Who knows? We gave him a lead to a couple of pushers over near the freighter dock, you know? Ala Moana? Yeah, yeah.
He's a known hype.
Probably contacting pushers on Ala Moana near Pier 2.
Get the word out to Danny Williams for me, will you, please? Tell him to blanket the area.
Yeah, hold on.
What about mustache, scars, clothing? Yeah, I think he had a brush.
Maybe chin whiskers.
I don't remember.
Possible that he had a beard or a goatee.
Yeah, that's it.
Get it out, fast.
Hold it, Danno.
Halt! ( suspenseful theme playing ) See if you can get around behind him.
Get an ambulance.
Lousy, lousy cops.
Shoot me down.
You think I'm some kind of-- We didn't shoot you.
Think these are growing pains I got in my gut? Look, we wanted you alive.
Somebody else wanted you dead.
Somebody like Joe Matsukino.
The gun.
The gun you took from the courthouse safe.
Where is it? I dumped it in the harbor.
There were two of them.
A guy named Cardonus.
He-- We know about him.
You said two.
Who else? I-- I don't know.
Was it Matsukino? There was another guy.
In the back of the car, when I met Cardonus.
I don't know his name.
He-- Would you recognize him if you saw him again? Yeah.
( gasps ) It's on its way.
Gone.
Maybe you get him, maybe you don't.
It won't make no difference.
I'm the only joker that will talk.
How about a slug of water for the Scotch? Let's have some service here.
The last wish of the condemned man.
You're a cop.
You know that, don't you? Come on.
Attaboy.
Thank you.
You know, McGarrett, you're playing out of your league.
Cops are great for giving tickets, catching hopheads, or rousting guys that litter the sidewalks, but when the big boys move in-- I mean the syndicates, the Joe Matsukinos.
--they make patsies out of you.
You're one of them, Cardonus.
You're not doing too well.
I ran out my string.
But Joe Matsukino, he's still riding high, wide and handsome.
( glass breaks ) Get Chin in here right away.
Oh, a little trouble, huh? You stay out of here.
Well, what happened? Some sort of poison.
It smells like bitter almond.
But how? Must have taken a drink of water from the ice-water tap.
Get all water lines to this wing of the hotel shut off immediately.
Alert hotel security to caution every occupant.
Right away.
It's done.
Like I said, maybe not the first round, maybe not the next, But we ain't getting out of this joint alive.
What a lousy chicken.
Where's all the white meat? Oh, boy.
That one of yours? No, the guy that brought up the food brought it.
Hey, what's with--?! Oh, come on.
Here, chew gum until tomorrow morning.
Gum? Do you know how many ways there are to get at a guy in a room like this, not even counting the water pipes? Who is it? It's Danny, Steve.
What have we got? We found our boxman.
So did Matsukino.
What do you mean? We got a fix on him, tracked him down.
He started to run.
Before we could get to him, he was gunned down.
Any identification, descriptions? Nothing.
It happened so fast, I hardly saw the car.
Did we get anything out of him? Nothing we could use.
( gasping ) What happened? I don't know.
I don't know.
Help me.
Get a doctor and an ambulance, quick.
Hold on, Cardonus.
We've got a doctor coming.
This is Williams, Five-0.
Get a doctor up to the suite and get an emergency ambulance, fast.
McGarrett.
McGarrett.
I don't wanna die.
I don't wanna die.
Help me, McGarrett.
Don't let me die.
Easy, easy.
Did he get hold of some poison? No.
No way.
His food? No way.
This man's lungs sound like rusted, leaking bellows.
Wait a minute.
Allergy.
Severe allergy attack.
Allergy? Why didn't he tell us he had a serious allergy? He didn't think of it, I guess.
Matsukino did.
Matsukino thinks of everything.
Not everything, Danno.
Nobody can.
Not even cops.
We can't seal off the entire hospital.
If Cardonus recovers, Matsukino's gonna try to get him here.
If he could get to him in that hotel room Maybe you'd better get back in there with him.
I've got a little visit to make.
He's great, Helen.
A beautiful boy.
I think so, Steve.
Looks just like Charlie.
It's too bad, huh? Never get to know his father.
He'll get to know him, Helen, through your eyes.
Yeah.
The trial is tomorrow morning, isn't it? Matsukino? Will you be able to convict? I don't know.
If Matsukino goes free, what can I tell my boy? What can I tell him his father died for? He's not breathing.
Adrenalin, stat.
The papers didn't waste any time getting the story out.
Matsukino must know about it by now.
Matsukino knew it last night, Chin.
What about that hotel kitchen? Who goofed? Nothing went up to that room that wasn't checked, double-checked or tasted.
Lab's going over everything now to find the source of the allergy.
Whatever it was, Cardonus was the only one susceptible to it.
How was it planted? Waiters, busboys, chefs, cooks, drivers, supply men.
Take your pick.
You got anything, Kono? Still running down the hit on that boxman.
Even if we get him, he won't talk.
Yeah, I guess so.
Well, it's about time for Matsukino's trial.
We'd better get over to that courthouse.
Mr.
Matsukino, do you have a statement before your trial? Will you take the Fifth Amendment? Have anything to say about the death of Cardonus? Who will be here to testify against you? Nice day, huh, McGarrett? Yeah, I'd say so.
Gonna be a great drama in there.
The State of Hawaii v.
Joseph Matsukino.
I'm looking forward to it.
You know, you ought to read more, McGarrett.
Man, the latest medical journals are fascinating.
Maybe you missed a beat yourself, Matsukino.
Maybe you should have read further.
The new treatments are even more fascinating than the diseases.
Man, you fracture me with that treatment stuff.
Treatments didn't help your star witness any.
Oh, you think not? What's with the ambulance? Has to be some way to get a star witness here.
Knock off the theatrics, McGarrett.
We both know Harry Cardonus split the scene last night.
Wrong.
Don't give me that stuff.
The newspapers wouldn't print a phony story.
No phony.
A trial witness did die and you killed him, but it wasn't Cardonus.
What? Read the story again, carefully.
It says, "secret witness, key testimony," but no names, places, times.
What witness? A boxman named Murph.
You know him? Nice morning, Joe.
But not as nice as it's gonna be inside that courtroom in a few minutes.
You don't say nothing, Harry.
You hear me? You don't say nothing.
You owe me, Harry.
You owe me.
The only thing I owe you for is a good night's sleep in the hospital.
No disturbances, no attempted hits on me.
I slept like a baby.
You can't do it, Harry.
You can't do it.
Just watch me, Joe.
Come on, McGarrett, put your star witness on stage.
I promised you, Matsukino.
Oahu State Prison, life.
Let's go.
