12 Monkeys (2015) s03e01 Episode Script

Mother

1 [low ambient music.]
Where are you right now? Let me start at the beginning.
[scoffs.]
The beginning Three years ago, I sent a traveler back in time to stop a plague that had killed 7 billion people.
The mission was clear: kill the man responsible for destroying the world before he has a chance to do so [gunshots.]
Change history and save the future.
But as fate would have it, we were hunting the wrong man.
- You're still here.
- How is that possible? We changed course and recruited others to help us on our mission.
Bonds were forged with allies, mutual enemies, and even those of unsound mind.
[overlapping whispers.]
And together, we discovered a conspiracy spanning centuries: the Army of the 12 Monkeys an organization bent on not only the destruction of humankind, but time itself.
A cult operating by fierce religious devotion to the word of its prophet [crowd chanting.]
Mother! A man from the future who calls himself the Witness.
The world's end, an infinite hell on Earth, are by his design.
And now, our mission to stop him has come at a tremendous cost.
[gunshots.]
[screams.]
Cole! Cassie! [electricity crackling, sizzling.]
Our friends are lost in time.
Come on, Cassie.
She's gone.
Where did she go? Our only clue to their disappearance is a year: 2163.
A when without a where.
For months, we've searched the wasteland for the enemy's machine, Titan, chasing its temporal signature.
[electronic whirring.]
Scouring the planet, we found nothing.
Initiate return sequence.
And for our traveler, James Cole, I fear this is no longer a rescue mission, but something else the hopeless endeavor of a man desperate to save someone he lost, someone he loves.
And with each passing day, hope becomes a distant memory.
[electronic whirring.]
[somber music.]
How can we defeat an enemy from our own future? Time is no longer on our side.
[sensor beeping.]
[dramatic music.]
[alarm blaring.]
[machine whirring.]
[electricity crackling.]
How much longer you want to do this? Mr.
Cole.
[somber music.]
Mr.
Cole.
- James.
- What? It's time.
- You and I both know - I'm not stopping.
Your loyalty is distracting you from the truth.
We need to move on.
It's been months.
I've watched you killing yourself slowly.
And I stood aside, and I helped.
I can find her.
Dr.
Railly isn't the mission.
She never was, and she never would have wanted to be.
What about Ramse, then? Jennifer? - They neither.
- What is it then? Huh, Jones? What is the mission now? Stopping the Witness, the plague! Learning Titan's true purpose! Same bullshit, over and over again.
We may not find our friends, but we can still save them.
We can save everyone! I'm going back there.
The hell you are.
Move.
You are a rabid dog.
Don't make me put you down.
[exhales.]
The sensor that I planted on the bridge outside Syracuse there was a a spike in the temporal energy.
- Then it went dark.
- It might've found Titan.
Or found nothing a hiccup in the time stream.
We need to know that! I need to know that.
If there's even a chance You are malnourished, dehydrated.
You haven't slept in months.
James, we have lost so many already.
[chuckles.]
I'm not gonna die on you.
I can find them.
All right.
But you're not going alone.
[women shouting.]
- [grunts.]
- Oh! [tense music.]
[grunts.]
[laughing.]
[grunting, blows landing.]
[crowd cheering.]
I'm not going anywhere.
I have responsibilities here.
The security of this facility, to my sisters We're losing Mr.
Cole.
I need someone to keep an eye on him.
A reconnaissance mission only.
I'm not getting in your machine.
It's caused enough damage.
Don't be a little shit.
I'm not one of your soldiers to be ordered.
Or my daughter to be told, apparently.
- That's not what I meant.
- Then say what you mean.
[sighs.]
I went to Titan for Moth Jennifer.
She's gone.
This is not my mission.
I don't believe in it.
Yet here you are, standing before me, alive my daughter.
This mission saved your life.
Mr.
Cole saved your life.
Please.
I only want you to be his guardian, to protect him.
From who? There's no one left in 2163.
It's a dead world.
The greatest danger to Mr.
Cole is Mr.
Cole.
I need to protect him from himself.
Initiate splinter sequence.
[machine humming.]
And if James doesn't want to be saved? Then you'll stick him with this.
And you'll bring him home.
Match coordinates.
[suspenseful music.]
- Follow sequence.
- Powering up.
[machine whirring.]
Try and keep up.
I prefer to be where I can see you.
[chuckles.]
Something tells me you're the one I should keep an eye on.
You don't trust me now either? I don't trust what you've become.
You know, we can hear you at night.
Drinking mother's red tea in your quarters.
The screaming.
It's not working, is it? The Witness is always there.
It worked once.
Maybe because he wanted it to.
Maybe.
It could kill you, James.
Or do you even care anymore? The hell's that supposed to mean? You're different now unwilling to face the hard choices in front of you.
Hey, you have no idea the choices I've had to make.
[tense music.]
There it is.
What? No, no.
No, no, no, no, no.
There's no power.
We came all this way for a dead battery? Come on! We'll set up camp and wait for the machine to bring us back.
No, we won't.
It's over, James.
I'm not asking.
[grunts.]
I'd be very careful if I was you.
It's time to go home.
- I'm not going anywhere.
- You'll do as I say.
[sensor pulses, beeps.]
[alarm blaring.]
Temporal signature.
Titan? We found it.
[beeping continues.]
[sensor beeps rapidly.]
Jesus, you're just like your mother.
Last time we went to Titan, we had an army, and we were almost killed.
- There's only two of us.
- If we don't go there now, - we could lose it forever! - That's suicide! Cassie, Ramse, Jennifer.
This could be our only chance.
Or we could get them all killed.
We should return to the facility and formulate a plan.
You go do that, then.
[dramatic music.]
[grunts.]
[shouts.]
[grunting, blows landing.]
[shrieks.]
[shrieks.]
[grunts.]
Stay down.
[chuckles.]
Jones give you that? Say hi to your mother for me.
You little sh [chuckles.]
[groans.]
[sensor beeps rapidly.]
[panting.]
Cassie [soft dramatic music.]
[calm piano music.]
The Mother must eat.
I'm not hungry.
[fork clatters.]
You must nourish the child growing in your belly.
Please.
You need to keep up your strength.
[door opens.]
Leave us.
A confession if I may.
It seems to me that only yesterday, you were willing to harm anyone who came close to you, and I was concerned that you were incapable of change.
And now look at you.
Glowing.
Domesticated.
Please eat.
You know, today is the most special of occasions.
Your unveiling.
A chance to show the faithful that the Witness is safe and growing strong inside you.
And a chance for you to show your love for him.
He's mine.
Why wouldn't I? You've shown doubt.
Because I fear for him.
Love for the child inside you is incidental.
The love you must show is for the man he becomes.
You should be honored.
The Witness chose you as his vessel.
For decades, I've waited.
It is a remarkable thing to be raised to raise a child.
Shaped in order to shape.
Taught to teach.
I'm his mother.
Hmm.
[dark music.]
The mother is not the belly that bears the child, but the hands that cradle, the voice that soothes the crying, the face it sees and thinks to itself "Love.
" [inhales sharply.]
Mind yourself.
[calm piano music.]
[dramatic music.]
[machine beeping.]
Mr.
Cole's tether has been activated.
[machine whirring.]
[screams.]
[panting.]
Hannah! We found Titan.
James is going in on his own.
- Bring him back! - We can't.
The machine thinks we already did! We'll have to reboot the system in order to establish connection Hurry! Goddamn it! You're tense.
Don't be.
All will be fine.
You've always been kind to me, Arianna.
Well, why would I not be? You're a follower of the Witness.
I'm just a vessel.
Magdalena said so herself.
I believe in the Witness because it's all I've ever known.
You were raised in Titan? I was taken from my parents when I was a child from a time long past.
I miss my family too.
[soft dramatic music.]
This belonged to my mother.
When I'm feeling lonely, I rub it between my fingers.
It's very soothing.
Take it.
- No, I can't.
- Please.
All mothers are important.
You never speak of the child's father.
His name was James.
He doesn't even know that I'm Was he kind? You miss him? I want to go home.
[bells clanging in distance.]
[suspenseful music.]
[bells continue.]
[breathing heavily.]
[device whirring.]
What the hell are you? Shit.
[both grunting.]
Ugh! [shouts.]
Argh! Ow! [electronic whirring.]
[groans.]
[panting.]
What the hell? - Will not question - The truth of Titan.
Its mystery is a testament to our faith.
Or the betrayal of our trust.
We don't demand of it answers.
There's another traveler.
Not inside, but close.
James Cole has finally found us.
The Mother's unveiling will have to wait.
Initiate splinter sequence.
Where are we going? To the Red Theater.
[bells clanging.]
[deep echoing horn.]
- We must return.
- What's happening? Titan is leaving this time.
Come on.
[deep echoing horn.]
[electronic whirring.]
[thrilling music.]
[shouts.]
[groans.]
[gasping.]
I'm not gonna hurt you.
I can get you back to your family if you help me get back to mine.
Arianna, if you love the Witness help me save him from them.
[deep echoing horn.]
[softly.]
Okay.
Do you know the way out of here? Yes.
This way.
Come.
[gurgling.]
Which way? [grunts.]
Shh.
[deep echoing horn.]
- The Mother? - Find her.
Now! [panting.]
Are you ready? [deep echoing horn.]
Yes.
Ahh! Ah! - Arianna, get up! - Go! - Go.
- Get up, now! I won't make it! Go! [deep echoing horn.]
No.
[deep echoing horn.]
[machine whirring.]
I found Mr.
Cole, but this doesn't make sense.
- What is it? - I've got multiple signatures here.
Splinter radiation off the scale! Titan Cole.
Cole! James Cole.
Cassie! Cole! [shouting.]
[electronic whirring.]
Cole? [machine whirring.]
[alarms beeping.]
No.
Gone.
We've lost his tether.
Where did he go? [dramatic music.]
[electronic pulse.]
The Emerson.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, easy.
Who are you? That's right.
Take it all in.
Greetings, asshole.
I'm future asshole.
[electricity crackling.]
I'm so sorry.
It's not your fault.
Go.
Go! - [screaming.]
- No! [Arianna screaming.]
She was right there! I could see her! I could've saved her! No, you would've been killed.
We would've been killed? - I'd rather die trying.
- [laughs.]
Trust me, I remember.
All this except the kick to the nut sack.
I really should've remembered that one.
This should be impossible.
I know.
It's crazy, right? I mean, I'm a little surprised it hasn't happened sooner.
Use the subway in the same city long enough, you're bound to run into each other.
How is this not a paradox? Oh, uh this helps with that.
That's a machine? No, this is just what we all wear in the future.
Yeah, it's a machine.
Hey, don't get touchy.
Jesus, maybe we should shave.
Oh, nice.
That's funny.
Thanks.
I remember that one, too.
All right, you had your fun.
You got some shots in.
Now tell me what I need to know.
Okay.
What do you need to know? Jesus Christ, you came to me! Cassie, Ramse you know more than me, - so let's hear it, future asshole! - [chuckling.]
- Jones is right.
- About what? - You are a rabid dog.
- Okay.
- You're blind.
- I'm blind.
Then tell me what I'm missing.
Tell me the future.
Jennifer.
Jennifer Goines? Turns out the key to the universe is chock full of nuts.
- You need her.
- All right.
Then let's go get her.
Jump me back to Titan.
Christ's sakes, can't you formulate a plan for once in your life? - Are you shitting me? - Just listen.
Jennifer's not in Titan.
She's lost in time.
Way back.
Locked away somewhere inside that Primary pinball machine brain of hers is the answer to everything: the plague, Titan, Ath Who? The Jinn, the Witness all of it.
All right.
Where is she? When is she? You're gonna want to brush up on your French.
Madame! Madame! - Regardez-moi.
- [shells exploding.]
Ecoutez.
[speaking French.]
Yes, yes.
Oui, oui.
[gunshot.]
[screams.]
[speaking German.]
[gunshot.]
[murmuring.]
German, German.
[chuckles.]
[gunshot.]
[dark music.]
[singing "99 Luftballons" in German.]
[speaking German.]
[gunshot.]
[continues singing.]
[laughing.]
Oh, yeah.
[Nena's "99 Luftballons" playing.]
Yeah! Much better! [gunshot.]
[singing in German.]
[singing continues.]
99 Luftballons! [distant shells exploding.]
[chuckling.]
[laughing hysterically.]
[all laughing.]
[speaking German.]
Oh, no.
You Germans smoke a lot.
You are American? How did you come here? I accidentally shot a time machine.
Ugh! Stupid.
[imitates explosion.]
Here I am.
[laughs.]
[distant gunfire.]
[dark music.]
[whispering.]
The Horsemen.
[sniffs.]
I think you might be crazy person.
[laughing.]
Phone home.
Phone home.
I need to get a message to my friends.
They need to know.
They need to know! - They need to know! - Need to know what? It all starts here In the past.
They're coming.
They're coming.
Who? Four of them! Apocalypse it's here! Yeah! Horsemen no horses.
[gasps.]
Horsemen no horses.
Horsemen! Right! [laughs.]
Horsemen of the Apocalypse! [laughs.]
The Horsemen of the Apocalypse! [laughing wildly.]
Jennifer's in 1922.
- That's Cassie's watch.
- Hey.
The suit helps with paradoxes.
It doesn't stop them.
Why are you wearing that? What aren't you telling me? [steam hissing.]
What happens to her? The Witness, conceived out of time in the house of cedar and pine.
Born of two travelers he who hath ensured his own creation, despite the father's attempt to undo him.
The blood the travel serum in both the mother and the father miraculous beyond words.
And soon, the coming of the Witness shall be upon us.
And then his return to Titan, as promised, where he shall lead us to the forest of red forever.
The Witness is safe.
All: The Witness is safe.
The Witness is safe.
All: The Witness is safe.
What happens to her? I can't tell you.
Cassandra, no! [solemn music.]
Stay back.
Don't do this, Cassandra.
Come down.
Stay back! - Are you prepared? - I'm prepared.
Wouldn't you rather live in your son's admiration than his scorn for this selfish act? He'll never have to know.
Why won't you tell me? What happens to her? Cassandra.
If I jump this all ends now.
Me, you You'll never get him.
No, you don't understand.
We don't make him.
He makes us.
The Witness is exactly who he wishes to be.
It's already happened and will again a beautiful cycle.
How do we save her? - We don't.
- Don't say that.
Don't say that.
We can always go back, do it over again.
No.
Everything we've done all our sins they're written.
You're frightened.
I understand.
But we can rejoice in this miracle together.
It's fate.
Yours.
Ours.
Does she die? That's up to her.
Cassandra.
You can't have him.
No, Cassandra! [electronic pulse.]
[calm piano music.]
The Mother must eat.
[fork clatters.]
You must nourish the child growing in your belly.
What's happening? Oh, you oh, here.
[footsteps approaching.]
- No! - Don't.
[screaming.]
No! [gagging.]
You haven't changed.
[whistling.]
Oh, dear.
How did you do this? Magdalena.
[electronic pulsing.]
She came back in time and warned us about what you were gonna do.
The Mother will try to harm herself.
Arianna will help her.
Thank you for your sacrifice.
[energy pulsing.]
You know, your son will always know that you chose death over him.
Now the Witness is no longer safe, which is why the remainder of your days here will be less, uh comfortable.
Mind yourself.
[alarm beeping.]
I've got him.
Where? Manhattan.
The Emerson Hotel.
What the hell is he doing there? Locking on.
Initiate retrieval sequence.
[dramatic music.]
So that's it, huh? I'm supposed to just give up on Cassie? - It's what needs to happen.
- [scoffs.]
What's the point, then? If it's all fate, wh-why are we even here? Why go on? Why don't we just That's how all this started.
You and I we're supposed to be erased.
We're still here.
No matter what we do, it never gets better.
Once, though.
The house.
Cassie.
That's the only life we managed to erase.
[melancholy music.]
I didn't come here today to save Cassie.
This is a long fight.
You're only halfway there.
It's gonna hurt.
Things inside of you are gonna break.
Things you never even knew you had.
I'm gonna tell you something I probably shouldn't.
It's probably screwing with all that causality bullshit Jones used to go on about.
You're gonna have to forgive yourself for what you've done.
For what you're gonna have to do.
There's a beginning and there's an end to all this.
And all you and I are ever gonna have is what's in between.
Wearing this means that somehow, somewhere, you're always gonna find your way back to her.
- Time to go.
- Time to go.
See you soon.
[energy pulsing.]
[footsteps approaching.]
[dramatic music.]
That was harder than I thought it was gonna be.
You told him there was hope.
I had to get here somehow.
You know there's another way.
No.
There's not.
[machine whirring.]
Mr.
Cole.
[sighs.]
We're done.
The answers we're looking for aren't in Titan.
Where are they? In the past, with Jennifer.
We have to find her.
And Dr.
Railly? She's not the mission.
[screams.]
[straining.]
[gasps.]
[straining.]
[dark music.]
No.
Push.
[crying.]
- Push.
- No.
Push.
[panting.]
No.
Push.
[screaming.]
Push.
No.
Push.
Push! Push.
Push.
Push! [voice distorted.]
Push! No! Push.
[yelling.]
Push! Push! [screaming.]
[baby crying.]
