Big Sky (2020) s01e03 Episode Script

The Big Rick

1 Previously on "Big Sky" - Are you sleeping with my husband? - Whoa.
[BOTH GRUNTING.]
- What are you doing?! - I'm gonna pass him.
Right.
Good luck trying to catch up.
Dickwad! - Loser! - RONALD: Shut up! - [SCREAMS.]
- [ELECTRICITY CRACKLES.]
[SOBBING.]
Please! Please let us go! Uh, I think I have a problem.
What's going on? Danielle she and her sister never showed.
- Something is not right.
- Where are we? LEGARSKI: You're looking for a couple of missing teenagers.
That's right.
We've had the occasional young female vanish around here.
CASSIE: Remember those missing prostitutes from the truck stops? You took two wholesome teenagers, the type people friends and family go looking for.
This church, how do you feel about driving up there? To the church? Now? The last I spoke to him, he was headed out to the Church of Glory and Transcendence with you.
What are you implying? What did this trooper have to say? Not much.
For my money, he's involved.
Ronald.
You've been sloppy.
GRACE: [PANTING.]
I got it! [LAUGHS.]
There's a pin in the cuff that I released with my shoelace.
Where did you even learn that? It's kind of obvious.
[SIGHS.]
She's annoying that way.
See, you work the arm through the cuff, kind of like dental floss through your teeth.
[GRUNTS.]
Yeah, okay.
- Do us now.
- Alright.
Yeah.
- Okay.
- Here.
[LIGHT CLINKING.]
Geez.
[DOG BARKING IN DISTANCE.]
Problem? I'm not comfortable, Ronald.
You've been acting off.
That's my problem.
[CLOCK TICKING.]
Maybe the problem is you.
You ever consider that? I actually have.
After all what's that saying? "A mother is only as healthy as her sickest child"? What has gotten into you? I have a nose for things.
And I don't like the stink.
[KNUCKLES CRACK.]
[SIGHS.]
Hey.
Hey.
This patch has some give.
Yeah, there's definitely something on the other side of this.
It's just a question of if I can get through to it.
Yeah.
If we push with our feet, maybe we could - I can squeeze through and get out.
- Y-Yeah.
[EXHALES SHARPLY.]
- [POUNDING.]
- Come on! [FLOORBOARDS CREAKING.]
What time did you get up? Uh, woke up at 3:00.
Couldn't fall back asleep.
You gonna leave me? I'd feel a lot less alone if I did.
Remember I told you my nickname in high school? The Big Rick.
Wasn't just because I was big or captain of the football team.
It was that I could always be counted on to do the right thing, the moral thing.
But the "good" of something, the "right" of it murky business.
What have you done? SHERIFF: Yeah, Jenny Hoyt already called.
And as I told her, it's 48 hours until they can be declared missing, so there's only so much I can do.
There's a lot you can do.
You can assign officers to look.
- Well - Check out the truck stops, tap into ViCAP, interview Rick Legarski.
There's a lot you could do.
We have something known as police procedure, Ms.
Dewell.
Did they teach procedure at the academy, or was that after you quit? They taught me it's no match for politics.
We're talking about three missing girls on your watch.
Add to that a popular ex-cop.
I doubt the public outcry will be about good or bad procedure.
Wow.
You come in tootin' like a freight train, don't you? I just want to find these kids.
And Cody? I mean, you really want to find Cody, if certain rumors are to be believed.
I beg your pardon? Forgive me, Ms.
Dewell, but you seem to have a nose for getting your nose in places that don't belong, which is what you're doing here right now, I must say.
My nose, Sheriff, is all about finding people who've gone missing.
And as I told Jenny Hoyt, we will look into it.
Now, you have a good day.
[SCOFFS.]
Nobody's gonna hold me down Nobody's gonna take my crown To the day I die I'm gonna let 'em know this is my empire Let them know [GRUNTING.]
It's not budging! Yes, it is.
Keep going.
[PANTING.]
We're never gonna be able to get through there.
Danielle, we don't have a lot of options here.
Keep going! [SIGHS.]
[ALL GRUNTING.]
[ENGINE SHUTS OFF.]
You.
You, you, you, you, you! Seeing my ex-wife, asking questions about me.
Inquiries of a libelous nature.
I'm not a happy camper.
Neither am I, 'cause some things aren't adding up.
Some things about you.
You need to check your math, missy.
I don't like being called "missy.
" That right? We don't always get what we want missy.
I extended myself for your partner, Cody.
And I did so again for you.
And you talked to my ex-wife, making me out to be some kind of deviant! I am a Montana state trooper! And that's the part that doesn't compute.
The "always on call" jingle, the, "I go the extra mile 'cause I'm that kind of guy" thing.
Far as I can tell, you haven't even gone the first mile.
Two teenage girls are missing, and you let Cody go it alone because, what, you're worried about your pension? That isn't Montana state trooper.
- That's a load of crap.
- I got half a mind to handcuff - and arrest you right now.
- Oh, on what grounds? On whatever grounds I want.
You say you want to help these girls? I am the law in these parts.
You really mean to antagonize the law? How's that warrant coming? Thanks for your help.
Ms.
Dewell.
What? [CHUCKLES LIGHTLY.]
Seems we got off on the wrong foot.
My esteem is a bit tied up in being a trooper, and I nick easy when my law enforcement integrity is challenged.
I do aim to protect and serve.
And I want to find these girls every bit as much as you do.
You have my word on that.
Okay.
Long as I have your word.
[CHUCKLES SOFTLY.]
I really don't like your tone or your attitude.
You left out "missy.
" You got something against police officers, Cassie? Those with half a mind to arrest me for whatever they want? Yeah, I do.
[ENGINE STARTS.]
[ENGINE IDLING.]
- Ready? - [ALL GRUNTING.]
[METAL CREAKS.]
Go, Grace! Go, go, go! - [GRUNTING.]
- Go, go, go, go, go! Go! Go! Keep going! [GRUNTS.]
Okay.
Alright, guys, I'm out.
Come on.
- [POUNDING.]
- Push! Push! Keep going! Keep going! I'm gonna go! - Come on! Come on! - Keep pushing! JERRIE: You've got to be kidding me.
[GRUNTING.]
[BOTH BREATHING HEAVILY.]
I'm not gonna fit.
No, keep keep going! - No, I'm not gonna fit, Grace! - We need all three of us.
[BREATHING HEAVILY.]
Grace.
Uh, he took me up, uh up a ladder.
There should be a trap door.
On the other side of the trailer.
Do you see it? Hold on.
[ELECTRICITY HUMS.]
Wait, yeah! I see it! I see it! - [THUDDING, CHAIN JINGLES.]
- [GROANS.]
It's locked.
I can't.
I can't open it.
[SIGHS.]
Okay.
[ELECTRICITY HUMS.]
Wait.
[WATER TRICKLING.]
There's a Oh, God.
[EXHALES SHARPLY.]
What, Grace? Grace, are you okay? There's There's a drain that connects to a pipe.
I-I see running water.
I think it might lead to a sewer.
Wait, guys.
I think there might be a way out.
[GRUNTING.]
Okay, okay, Grace, what's going on? Talk to us.
[GRUNTING.]
- [METAL CLANKING.]
- Come on! Okay, it's loose.
I think we're in business.
Really? Grace, how? There's a lot of water damage.
Somebody did a really bad job laying this concrete.
If you don't seal it, it disintegrates.
She wants to be Wikipedia when she grows up.
[CLACKING.]
[GRUNTING.]
There could have been so many places they could have taken a wrong turn.
If they were in cell range, which maybe they weren't.
In that area [GROANS.]
I am not trying to handle you.
- I'm worried myself, okay? - [DOOR OPENS.]
Cody went looking.
Now he seems to be missing.
Ouch.
Not sure I would have shared that.
- Okay.
- Hey.
Hey.
She's on the phone with the girls' mother.
I promise, the minute I hear anything.
And I'll call even if I don't.
Okay.
Bye.
I'm headed to the church.
Glory and Transcendence.
- Now? - [KEYS JINGLE.]
That's where Cody was last headed.
I'm done messing around.
How's it going? GRACE: Good.
Good.
I think I might be able to get into this drainage thing.
Okay.
Okay, can you get out? I-I can get down, but whether down leads to out Okay, but what if it just leads into the ground? No, I see running water.
It's got to flow somewhere.
- [METAL CLATTERS.]
- [GRUNTING.]
You got some sister.
Tell me about it.
I got the looks.
She got everything else.
[BRAKES SQUEAK.]
WOMAN: Can I help you? Yes, I'm here to see William Edwards.
Do you have an appointment? I'm Special Agent Jenny Hoyt.
A couple of teenagers are missing, and I'd just like to speak to Mr.
Edwards.
It won't take long.
Do you have a warrant? A warrant? No, I wouldn't think I would need a warrant.
Mr.
Edwards runs a church.
I just assumed he might want to help.
And honestly, the Bureau of late I really don't want to go back and say Mr.
Edwards refused me.
Missing girls, cult in the woods.
We don't need another Waco.
[INTERCOM CLICKS, BUZZER.]
[BIRDS CHIRPING.]
[ENGINE SHUTS OFF.]
[INDISTINCT CONVERSATIONS.]
[WOOD CRACKS.]
[GRUNTS.]
These floorboards are rotted, too.
If I could just loosen them [GRUNTING.]
[WOOD CRACKING.]
Come on! Come on! [DOOR OPENS, CREAKS.]
Did you hear something? [PANTING.]
[CHAIN RATTLES.]
[POUNDING.]
Grace! - Grace, he's coming! - Hurry up! Come on! Come on! Grace, he's coming! Grace!! Grace! Grace! Grace! Grace! Come on! Please! - Grace! - Grace! - Grace! Grace! - Hide! [SCREAMING.]
[GASPS.]
Grace?! [PANTING.]
Damn it! Whoa! Oof! RONALD: Okay! Okay.
You come back now, and I won't kill your sister.
You think I'm kidding you? Get back here now, or she's dead! [GASPING.]
[SCREAMS.]
- [RUMBLING.]
- Oh, my God.
Oh, my God! Grace! Grace! Do you hear that?! Did you hear that?! Something happened! Something happened! Grace, respond! Grace!! [RONALD PANTING.]
Grace!! Grace! Grace! Please, please! Grace! [GRUNTING.]
[SOBBING.]
No! No, please! Please, no! Grace, respond! Grace! Please! So, you're not an FBI officer? No.
I'm an ex-cop, private detective.
You're here under false pretenses, Ms.
Hoyt.
That might go for the two of us, don't you think? You got fired from the Casper Presbyterian Church in 2003, couldn't find work for two years until you eventually started this place, attracting congregants with the lure, if not promise, of young women.
Evolved women, coupling with their emotional counterparts.
I'm not looking for a fight.
Just two missing girls.
And my husband.
Your husband? He's missing, too.
So, I-I'm a bit of a wreck.
With a gun.
An armed wreck.
And what leads you to look here? Rick Legarski.
- Ah.
- You know him? Trooper Legarski.
Always up to something, but you don't know what.
What did he say? That this place can be an attractive nuisance for young women.
- Ah.
- You do see the connection.
I got two girls in this neck that have gone missing.
They're not here.
I'm sure your research revealed that I like to keep track of people.
Who comes, who goes.
They're not here.
Can I look around? Sure.
And your security cam footage? Sure.
[RADIO CHATTER.]
[DOOR CREAKS.]
[GRUNTS.]
[CHUCKLES.]
Wh What the ? We lost one.
[SIGHS.]
I beg your pardon? The young one somehow got loose, somehow got into the storage shed and went into the drainage.
- That's not possible.
- The whole floor collapsed.
I went in after her, but the drainage ditch itself collapsed.
She's out there?! I think she was buried alive.
What if she wasn't? That ditch leads to an outflow.
There's freedom on the other end of it her freedom.
Which would bring an abrupt conclusion to ours! I doubt she got out.
We need to make sure.
You excavate where it collapsed.
I'm gonna go out looking.
'Cause if she makes it out, Ronald Once again, very disappointed! Not hearing anything.
[SIGHS.]
The silence.
It scares me.
I know what you mean.
[SIGHS.]
[VOICE BREAKING.]
She could be dead.
Or she somehow got out.
That's where my money is.
[MOTOR REVVING.]
[ENGINE STARTS.]
[EXCAVATOR POWERS DOWN.]
[GRUNTS.]
[GRUNTING, PANTING.]
[WHIMPERS.]
[PANTING.]
[PANTING.]
Okay.
[CELLPHONE VIBRATING.]
[BEEP.]
Hey.
Cody never showed at the church, it seems.
- What? - According to the reverend.
You believe this reverend? I believe the security camera footage he had, which showed no signs of Cody pulling up that night.
Unless he jumped some back fence or something.
Anything from Legarski? No.
If anything, he's an obstacle.
Okay.
Well, I got to go home.
I need to talk Justin off a ledge.
He's worried sick.
Can you come by later so we can compare notes? - Your place? - Do you mind? You know the statistics.
If we don't locate him quickly I'll I'll be there.
[BEEP.]
[SIGHS.]
DANIELLE: When did you know? I mean [INHALES DEEPLY.]
when did you, um realize that you were other than how you were biologically born? Did I even ask that correctly? [CHUCKLES.]
You asked it fine.
I knew as early as 4 years old.
I liked all the girl stuff.
The dresses, the dolls.
I didn't talk about it much, but but I always knew.
At some point, not talking about it was, uh, [CHUCKLES.]
no longer an option.
And when I was 14, I I went to my parents and I said, "Mom, Dad.
I'm a girl.
" How did they react? They hugged me.
Told me how much they loved me.
And then they got me straight into therapy.
And I said, "Mom, Dad, uh, therapy's not gonna fix it.
I'm a girl.
" And they threw me out.
Yeah, it turns out that love wasn't, uh, quite as unconditional as it was cracked up to be.
Where did you go? Been living in a trailer park.
By yourself? Since you were 14? Fully emancipated, I guess.
Are you not scared? Of all the the hatred out there? Life is dangerous.
[CHUCKLING.]
I mean, look look at us here.
I remember when [CHUCKLES SOFTLY.]
when my dad would talk to us about bigotry and and racism.
He said it's not so much the skinheads, idiots in the white sheets.
Those are the people you see coming.
It's more the progressives, the ones who think that they truly get it, when they don't have a clue.
I think I-I might be one of those people.
Well, there's hope for you.
[ENGINE SHUTS OFF.]
[DOOR OPENS, CREAKS.]
[KEYS JINGLE.]
[CHAIN RATTLES.]
[DOOR SQUEAKS.]
Hey, sailor.

[ENGINE SHUTS OFF.]
[SIGHS.]
Nothing yet, honey.
Your dad has disappeared before.
This is different.
He's dead, Mom.
There's no [SOBBING.]
[PANTING.]

Jenny? JENNY: Kitchen.
Hey.
Justin, you know Cassie.
Hi.
Hi.
I'm sorry about all this.
Yeah.
So, compare notes? So, we're pretty much no further along than we were at the beginning of the day.
Odds get worse with the passing of time, adding Cody going missing He must have gotten too close.
And since the last we know of his whereabouts, I'm thinking you might be right.
About what? Legarski.
Cody goes to see him.
Suddenly, he's gone.
Have you checked him out? He's squeaky-clean.
No citizen complaints, the county's re-upped his contract for another five years with raises.
The Western Sheriff's Association even named him one of their "Top Cops.
" But he's bad.
I know it.
Okay.
We focus on Trooper Legarski, then.
- [UTENSIL CLACKS.]
- [EXHALES SHAKILY.]
You okay? No.
Are you? No.
[MOTOR REVVING.]
[EXCAVATOR POWERS DOWN.]
There.
[GRUNTS.]
You got her? [WHIMPERS.]
[SIGHS.]

[CHAIN RATTLES.]

Aren't you here to help us? [DOOR SLAMS.]
[DOOR OPENS, CREAKS.]
Seal up that container so there's no more escapes.
Give them enough food to keep them alive for a few days, and then we need to steer clear.
Let things settle.
Clear our heads some.
And what's the plan? I have no idea.
[SNIFFLES.]
- [ENGINE STARTS.]
- [SOBS.]
[EXHALES SLOWLY.]
[DRILL WHIRS.]
[WHIRRING.]
Twice? He shot you twice? - I'm okay.
- No, no, no.
No, Grace, you are not okay.
These are serious wounds.
It looks like it could use stitches.
[METAL POUNDING.]
Do you know anything anything about the other guy, other than he's bigger? And a cop.
He killed a fisherman.
What?! I came across a guy fishing, and he killed him.
- RONALD: You shut up in there.
- [METAL POUNDS.]
You shut up!! - DANIELLE: Grace! - Hey!! [POUNDING.]
I got out once! I'm gonna get out again! You hear me?! [SCREAMING.]
Hey! We do not have the upper hand here! We are just getting started! You sick bastard! [SCREAMING.]
