Carter (2018) s01e04 Episode Script

Harley's Got a Gun

1 - What the hell are you doing? - He knows who killed Swaze! You can't do this! (LAUGHING) Stop! Stop! When guns come out Nobody jokes.
It's not laughing time, it's someone dying time.
It's called gallows humour.
Still dumb.
Believe me, when someone gets hung No jokes.
Okay, deeply disturbing.
Here, look at my form! My arms are locked and I trust my reflexes - to do the rest.
- Fake guns.
Fake reflexes.
Our stunt coordinator said I was like a panther.
The only way you're like a panther is you both pee on trees.
You think I don't see, but I see.
You ever fired a real gun? Uh yes, you know, once.
We were in Vegas and we went to this super cool firing range where you could pick out any gun.
Now I know how you broke your finger.
Yeah, you know what, it doesn't matter.
Let's just do this.
Shotguns are best.
No aiming.
Just pointing.
But are you gonna shoot all four? No, I leave one for you.
(GUNSHOT) (CLAPS) Dot, yes! Alright, it's just like a camera, you point and click.
This camera can shoot your whole foot off.
You are aware that 'violent dismemberment' is sort of your go-to conversation.
Come on, it's my turn.
Alright.
Put it into your shoulder.
Take a deep breath, hold it, then (DISTANT GUNSHOTS) - Did you hear that? - I heard.
- Is it hunting season? - No.
Dot! Dot, why are you running toward it? Hey.
- Early-bird hunters.
- Sssshhhh! Just want to let you know that there are other people in the woods.
People who don't want to get shot.
No one wants to get shot.
Dot! No-no-no-no.
Dude! Dude! The dude is dead.
Now you're literally just walking around finding crimes? - It's what happened.
- Well, in the future call.
Taking photos of the victims? Dead people aren't the fancy meal you had at some hip restaurant.
Yeah, but I added the little sad emoji face.
What were you and Dot doing in the woods? I was teaching him how to shoot.
Whoa, nowhere near here.
Trust me.
This one couldn't hit anything even by accident.
Hey, Nicole, what do you got? Well, we was shot, for sure.
I haven't found the bullet yet.
There's no exit wound, so it's got to be in there.
Well, Harley said that he heard two shots.
Well, there's only one entrance wound on this guy.
If there were two shots, then either our killer had incredible aim or one of them must have missed.
Wes? I've got a team looking.
Nothing interesting yet.
But yeah I'll keep my eyes peeled for a missing slug.
Great, thanks guys.
Woah-whoa-whoa-whoa Th That's it? No first impressions? No forensic insights? Come on No, you're right, there is one more thing.
Oh good.
It’s because people like you and shows like Call Carter, that everyone thinks that forensic technicians are magicians.
That we can walk out here and just pull evidence out of our ass.
Okay, we obviously go to two very different magic shows Do you know that it takes at least ten hours to properly document, identify and collect evidence from a crime scene? Three or four times that when we're outside.
Do you know what the difference between an allele and a phenotype? Do you have any idea what a crime scene technician actually does?! Sam, I will call you when I know something.
Thanks for having my back there.
If I had to step in every time somebody yelled at you, I'd have no time to enjoy watching people yell at you.
(CLEARS THROAT) Meanwhile, at the crime scene A photo of the victim's driver's license.
Well, unless you two are busy.
His name is Jeff Latella.
Okay.
And I know the difference between an allele and phenol-thing.
Sounds like you do.
Oh, what is this? Haven't you ever heard of Google Maps? Waze? The 21st century? There's a lot of roads out here Google hasn't found yet.
You follow GPS outside the city you end up in the river.
What do we have here, huh? Nothing.
Whoa.
Seriously, don't.
Well now I have to.
Harley, stop! Almost there.
Come on open.
Whoa.
- You have another gun.
- Just put it away.
So what you're saying is I can have this one? No.
Police officers carry guns.
Civilians carry phones so they can call police officers.
But I'm a consulting detective.
Well, I will be sure to give you a special ringtone.
I'm thinking Inspector Clouseau.
Now put it away.
Now! Okay.
And the key.
How am I supposed to cover you if I don't have a gun? You know the only thing worse than having an untrained non-professional with a gun? No, but I have a feeling you're about to say something mean.
Having an untrained, non-professional with a gun behind me.
Harley, Harley, hang on.
Seriously, a minute.
Alright, this is the toughest part of the job.
What do you mean? If Jeff Latella had a wife, or a husband, they can take it pretty hard when you tell them.
I've had people take swings at me.
Grief unhinges people.
Oh come on, I'm a fairly sensitive guy.
But I will let you do the talking.
Probably better if they take a swing at you.
Alright, I'm gonna go talk to the super.
- I'll be right here.
- Yep.
Harley Carter? I'm sorry.
I heard you were in town.
Call Carter is amazing.
Oh, thank you, that's very nice of you to say.
Don't take this the wrong way, or do.
You are way cuter in person.
Well yeah, I gotta dial back the cute for the show.
Would it be too much trouble? No, come on, let's do it.
- I got this.
- I heard you're working - with the police now? - Yeah, I'm actually working on a case right now.
- What kind? - Uh murder.
A young guy who lives here.
Jeff Latella.
Jeff's dead? Um well that's not confirmed.
He's he's not dead? No, he is he is dead.
He is he is dead.
My partner and I Whoa whoa whoa! Ow! Ow! I just wanted to apologize for surprising you with this news, and and also for kneeing you in the chin.
I-I was just trying to catch you.
That's okay.
What happened? Well, we're still trying to piece that together.
You said that you've been Jeff's neighbor for a couple months? Yeah, that's right.
Can you think of any reason he would be out in the woods today? No, we once told me he was allergic to nature.
It sounds like you knew him pretty well.
I'm-I'm so sorry.
Did you see him this morning? No, but he put in crazy hours.
He'd go in super early.
Come home late.
"Sleep when I'm dead" kind of guy.
Any loved ones? Girlfriends? Boyfriends? No, he told me he and his partners were just um their business was just about to hit it big.
Where'd he work? A place called JTD.
It's a tech company.
I think he was a partner there.
It's like they saw a tech company on TV and said, "that's what I want to look like when I grow up".
Excuse me.
Oh, hey, where would we find We don't have one.
It's a down-side of working in an open-concept low hierarchy work space.
I actually write code.
What can I do for you? Can you tell us who's in charge? Can I help you? Trevor Dunn: the boss in a company with no bosses.
Mister Dunn, Detective Shaw - BPD.
What can we do for you? Did a man named Jeff Latella work here? Yes.
Of course.
We've actually been expecting him.
What's happened? I'm so sorry, but he was killed this morning.
Jeff's dead? Oh my God.
We found his body a couple of hours ago and it looks like he was shot.
Murdered? We're so sorry for your loss.
He was supposed to help with the presentation.
But he never showed, and we couldn't reach him on his phone.
Oh yes, on account of uh the dead thing.
Sorry.
When was the last time that you saw him? Last night.
We were just going over some final tweaks to the pitch.
Do you know who did it? Well we're just starting the investigation.
We were hoping that you could tell us a little bit more about him.
(CLEARS THROAT) Hey.
Trevor, Darlene.
Are we gonna do this? I'm sorry.
I have to deal with this.
But honestly whatever we can do to help.
You told his folks? No, not yet.
They're gonna take it hard.
I know them well.
We were all pretty close.
- Please let us know.
- Of course.
(PHONE RINGING) It's Wes.
- Oh, Angry Science Guy.
- He prefers Wes.
What have you got? Nicole dug this out of the body.
She just brought it over.
I've never seen anything like it.
It's a musket ball.
A what now? - Handmade? - Probably.
So our killer is a musketeer? No.
Because that's not a thing.
And also because I found this wax pellet at the scene.
Not a musketeer.
A duelist.
Which means? I know where to go.
So what? Now you're like some kind of forensic savant? You can see a little piece of wax and know that the killer was a duelist? What's next? You gonna lick a fingerprint and tell me what someone had for lunch? No I've just dealt with this before.
I know I've been gone for a few years But is that a thing up here now? People shoot at each other? You know, if I were a different guy, I'd be filing a harassment complaint.
If you were a different guy, you wouldn't be wearing that cool hat.
But you're not a different guy, are you, Chet? You're the same Chet Nix that makes old-timey guns for collectors, right? The same guy who sometimes fails to file that pesky paperwork - on those transactions? - One time.
- Three.
- Three times, one time, whatever.
I'm not good with paperwork, you know that.
That's not against the law.
Yes, but shooting up your ex-wife's house is.
It's actually super against the law.
She wasn't home at the time.
And I paid for that house.
My point is, you don't get to go all 'baby-bird' when we show up.
You're on my list, man.
You always will be.
It's harassment.
Who's this guy? Oh, uh I'm new.
Harley Carter, consulting detective.
It's like a hater-parade today.
Wow.
These are all real? Yeah.
Revolutionary War-era is his specialty.
Flintlocks mostly.
And people really buy them? CHET: Smooth bore.
Platinum lined.
Whatever people want.
We're gonna need a list of all of your customers.
Anybody that you've sold to in the last couple of years.
Sure.
You got a warrant? - I could get one.
- I'll be waiting.
Wow, these are incredible.
These are dueling pistols.
Yeah, they are.
Well yeah, but people don't actually duel with these It started making a comeback a couple of years ago.
Kinda like axe throwing.
Yeah, except axe throwing with guns.
So for this, the bullets are made out of wax.
Like the one we found at the scene.
They're smaller than a regular round.
More like a BB than a bullet actually.
They can't kill you; stings like hell.
Yeah, I'm not really into stinging.
Don't worry your pretty little head.
Alright, you know what? - I think we get the picture We-We - Ready? I'll count to five then you turn and fire.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
Five! - (GUNSHOT) - Ow-ow-ow! (GUNSHOT) Zero fun factor! People are such idiots.
You are still on my list, but nice work.
That is a fine gun.
Thanks.
You're in the military? Yeah.
See any action? Just enough.
Uh, well, thank you for all you've done for us.
All of us.
I'll send you that customer list.
That'd be great.
Man I really Really hope we get to arrest that guy.
He's clearly a little crazy.
And he gets off on hurting people.
I mean I will look into his alibi for this morning for sure.
But.
uh he doesn't smell guilty.
- How are the ribs? - They sting.
Sorry, I always wanted to try that.
Yeah, well I've always wanted to try a bazooka but never on you until now.
Take that.
Thank you.
Uh Our gun nut Chet said that he was at the gun range all morning, but I can't find anybody to confirm that yet.
Did you go through the customer list? Turns out there are a lot of duel-loving history nerds out there.
Some of which we've already talked to.
JTD? The tech company where our dead guy worked? Nothing says hipster tech start-up like dueling pistols.
You know what we call this in the police work? Plot twist! A lead, but sure.
I think it's time we took them up on their offer to talk a little bit more.
JT turned that dueling pistols over to Wes He's taking a look now.
- And the duelists themselves? - Rafalski's got 'em lined up I'm going to go talk to them now, you coming? - Uh I will be right there.
- Okay.
Penny.
Hi.
It's Harley from this morning.
Yeah.
I remember.
You still owe me a picture.
Picture? I feel like I owe you a coffee.
Coffee with Harley Carter? Did I win something? No, I just feel so bad.
What're you doing here? They said I had to come down and review my statement.
Oh well, I can do that.
Oh, uh hey.
How is the investigation going? Have you gotten any closer to figuring out who shot Jeff? Uh I can't really talk about that.
You know, ongoing investigation blah, blah, blah.
And if I do, someone always tells on me and I get reamed.
But you know what? Let me go get your statement.
Okay.
Hey, uh I'm gonna get Penny Rickson's statement.
- No.
- Penny Rickson? - Can't do it.
- Please don't do this - No.
- You don't have authorization.
Please I'm begging you.
Okay, thanks a lot man.
Um apparently only an "official" police officer can access your statement.
How about coffee? Is that still allowed? Uh yeah, sure.
Friday? Can't come soon enough.
Great.
Noonish? I know where you live.
"He said creepily".
I am going to go back to work now.
- See you Friday.
- Yes, Friday! We've been holding these duels for months.
It builds character and a tighter team.
No one got hurt.
Every participant signs waivers.
Every precaution is taken.
Yet one of your employees ended up dead With a real metal ball in his chest.
You don't know that anyone from our company was involved.
Well I know that Jeff was involved until he was violently uninvolved.
Maybe one of the guns was modified.
Maybe somebody used your "team building" to kill Jeff.
(TAPPING) (TAPPING) Excuse me.
- What?! - I can't hear anything.
Usually I can hear.
Well that should be labelled.
Honestly it was ridiculous.
Team building by pointing guns at each other? Moronic.
But the "Founders" Trevor, Jeff and Darlene they all thought that it got your blood up.
That you needed that killer instinct right before a big presentation.
Who had access to the guns? Well everything went through Darlene.
Although if you were a "Founder" the rules didn't apply.
There was always this "us versus them mentality.
" It's just that everyone else was "them".
I mean they wouldn't even share their lawyer with me.
- So why stay? - It was a job.
And for all the new-speak hipster corporate stuff the pay was pretty good.
(RAPID TAPPING) Since they're all here, why don't I go to their offices - and look for evidence? - What happened the last time you went off on your own and looked for evidence? Oh yeah, someone cattle prodded you.
Two things.
Cattle prodded: not a verb and that was at a farm.
This is gonna be like a super cool high-tech office.
Where they shoot each other with dueling pistols.
For fun.
Wes has those pistols! Do you think they have other pistols? Were there people in the company who resented us? Sure.
But nobody pushed themselves harder than we did.
I have been pushing ever since I met the other guys at Elmsburg College.
But when this deal goes through everyone is going to benefit.
Everyone except Jeff.
I mean with Jeff out of the picture, right of survivorship means that his share of the company goes to you.
Are you making an accusation? An observation.
You have no idea what it takes to build something like this.
The sacrifices we've had to make.
I think it's time we took a little break.
Of course.
Harley, maybe you could DAVE: Seriously? Something that says "I mean business" - but won't break my finger.
- You want me to get you a gun.
Yeah, nothing too gangstery.
Nothing too girly.
- You don't have a permit.
- Sam won't give me one.
Which is apparently what this country has come to.
Okay.
Okay, really? Just like that? That's what you want.
It's pretty easy.
Well I want.
Alright.
Okay, okay.
This is how it's gonna work.
I'm gonna contact a guy, tell him what I want.
He's gonna give me a figure and then I'm gonna give that figure to you.
You pay me and a few days later, you have your gun.
Great, 'cause I hate haggling.
Hold up, there's more.
You're gonna take the gun and one day, probably in the first week, you're gonna use it.
Most likely in front of Sam to save her, impress her, whatever but because you got it illegally, you're going to jail.
Now first offense, you're looking at six-months.
Not long.
But jail, and maybe this is a cliché, but jail isn't exactly a great place for famous pretty boys such as yourself.
You could have just said no.
Yeah I could have.
They called themselves the Fab Four.
But truth to be told they had only one genius among them.
It was a bit like if the Beatles had three Ringos and only one John.
The Beatles did only have one John.
And there will only ever be one Ringo.
Totally underrated.
Well, point being, gentlemen.
They had only one genius.
One leader.
And it wasn't Darlene or Jeff or Trevor.
Well who was it? Well, meet Xavier Morton.
This was his thesis.
In most of the world, we take connectivity for granted.
But there are still hundreds of millions who are being left behind.
My idea - XM Wire - means you'd always be connected, anywhere in the world.
And if we do it right we can give it away.
Let's invite everyone into the tent.
Give everyone the option to be included.
To never be alone.
A brilliant, brilliant young mind.
He had this naïve idealism that only young people have.
He didn't have the whole technology perfected yet But I would say he was very close.
What happened? Who knows? The other three, after school went on their own and created JTD.
Which was based entirely on monetizing this fine gentleman's technology and idea.
What happened next, why he was excluded I can't say.
All I know is that two years later he was dead.
Wow.
DAVE: Xavier Morton.
Dead at 22.
Survived by a mom, dad and sis By the way they don't mention how he died, I'd say he committed suicide.
If those jerks at JTD are behind this, you need to take them down hard.
You're a good man, Dave Leigh.
I'm sorry, are we bonding? Because I will resist.
For the last few years, I had no idea who my real friends were.
Everybody wanted something.
What, like friendship? Fair enough.
I guess we both know how Xavier felt.
People do crazy things when their friends turn on them.
Crazy like what? Come back from the dead? That was his obituary I just read.
Dead's a detail.
We are on to something here.
Can you feel it, Dave? Okay, you know what? That is your superpower.
Mine is making sure you don't get killed using yours.
Come on, let's go.
Alright, alright, alright.
Okay.
Hey.
We need to talk about Xavier Morton.
What kind of creep steals ideas from their friends and then What'd I miss? - He just confessed to shooting Jeff.
- What? He picked Jeff up this morning before their big meeting with the investor.
He had the guns and they both wanted to get pumped up.
I don't know what happened.
I shot a wax bullet at him The next thing I knew he was dead.
Why didn't you just say that? That I shot my friend dead then I ran away because I had a deal to make? Yeah it's kinda tough to spin.
This investor, this was our shot.
We were going to sell the company.
Walk away.
We worked so hard.
Wow.
Just like that.
Great work partner.
Yeah.
There's just one problem.
He may have pulled the trigger, but I think somebody else killed Jeff.
- Why? - Well there's just a couple of things that I need to confirm first and I need your help.
Do you want to read or talk? I'm not 100% sure where you're going with this, but I choose talk.
Perfect, I've got a few questions I want you to ask Wes Wes? I pick read.
I pick read! (KNOCKING) Wes.
Uh Mister Wes.
What is your last name? I get that your job is hard.
And if I gave you the wrong first impression, - I want to apologize.
- It's fine.
Great.
That said, Detective Shaw and I were wondering.
What if these were not the weapons involved in the shooting? This one has the victim's fingerprints on it.
This one has fingerprints from the man I believe has confessed to the shooting.
Right right.
Okay, so um what you're saying is that this gun, let's just call it the murder gun, fired the shot that killed the guy holding the victim gun.
Yes, a metal round could have been substituted for the wax round, which would explain why I only found one wax round at the scene.
Okay, so so what would you expect to find in the barrel of the murder gun? I know what you're asking.
You've seen some crime shows.
You think that we can match the marks on the bullet that we found in the Vic to the barrel it came from, right? No, actually, what I'm But what you don't get is that pistols like these have smooth bore barrels.
They don't make marks on the bullets.
There's nothing to tie them together.
OK, so if the murder gun fired a wax pellet there would be wax inside of the barrel, right? Of course.
But that wax would have been obliterated by the metal round.
Why am I explaining this to you? You're right.
You are right.
Mr.
Wes would you humour me and just look inside the barrel? You know, okay, look, fine.
Huh? Okay the barrel is coated.
With wax.
This gun did not kill Jeff Latella.
No further questions, your honour.
How did the talk with Wes go? Great.
Super.
We're besties now.
And you were right The gun Trevor shot was not the murder gun.
How is the reading part going? I've gone through everything.
And I keep banging up against the idea that you only heard two shots.
Right, well, I'm not super-hearing guy.
But I know someone who is.
Does Angus know what you did with his holding cell? - He does now.
- Okay, why are we here? Yo! Matty! Hey Matty, this is my partner, this is Sam.
Sam this is Matt One of the best sound engineers in all of Los Angeles.
Nice to meet you, Sam.
But confused.
I assumed Harley was lying about this whole crime solving thing.
Is that the vibe over there in Hollywood? That Harley's just gone a little nuts? Uh sorry, dude, yeah.
Okay.
Hey Matt, you get a chance to look at that file - I sent down to you? - I did.
You took a video of you shooting.
Of course you did.
Well yeah, it was for study purposes.
(GUNSHOTS) - You hear that? - DOT: I heard.
Okay.
Sounds like two gunshots.
Right? But, with a little Hollywood magic And two gunshots become three.
(SLO-MO GUN SHOTS) Hold it, you did that? Or you dug it out? The first two were almost on top of each other.
It would be hard to tell them apart at the time.
So you're sure? Three shots? Totally.
Two shots were your dueling pistols.
The third was something bigger.
Like a rifle? - Yeah, maybe.
- Well all right.
Thanks for your help.
- Thank you Matty.
- Alright.
We are looking for the grassy knoll! Where the third shooter was hiding? Call Dave.
We're gonna need him.
Last time I did this she shot me in the ribs.
Yeah don't worry, I don't think this is loaded.
OK, five paces.
BOTH: One-two-three- four-five.
And turn around and freeze.
Stay there.
Hey, why am I the dead guy? Hey, I'm the douchebag killer.
I don't think there's a good role here.
How long we gotta stand here? Until Sam finds the grassy knoll.
Or the book depository.
No man, it was the grassy knoll.
It was Oswald and the depository.
- I saw the footage.
- Case closed.
Grassy knoll.
(FAKE GUN NOISES) (GRUNTING) You got me.
DAVE: Say hello to my little friend! Now Something to rest the barrel on to make sure.
This ladies and gentlemen, is your grassy knoll.
It's too far for a pistol.
But a musket would be perfect.
And that would fit with what your Hollywood friend found.
I told you: we should have arrested "Funny Hat Chet" when we had the chance.
I found blood on the tree and a newly broken window at Chet's.
So he hurts his hand there, he bleeds over here.
But the only question is why would he shoot Jeff? So Trevor's innocent.
Like I said.
When did you say that? When didn't I say that? Well we'll leave Trevor locked up for now If the killer doesn't know we're looking, all the better.
Chet, we're back! Chet.
It's Detective Shaw.
You know on the show, during a moment like this My character would always say "it's quiet too quiet.
" We actually banned that line from the show.
But right now all I'm thinking is that it is too quiet.
Chet! Chet! It was either this or a rain barrel.
A very heavy rain barrel.
My options were limited.
So, overcome with remorse he shoots himself? In the back? That would certainly be a first.
Well if he's not our killer who is? All roads lead to JTD.
Yes, of course I knew Chet.
He's a supplier.
He sent you some pretty strange texts today.
I don't know what those were about.
"It's time to talk payment.
" "I held up my end.
Your turn.
" "I want some of the dough in 10 days.
" What-what does that mean? What payment was he asking for? I honestly don't know.
We paid for the guns months ago.
With Jeff gone, and Trevor in jail, aren't you the only founder left? But I didn't do anything! - Did you hire Chet to do something? - No! The technology that built JTD That's all Xavier Morton, isn't it? We have his signature on a dozen agreements.
He signed all his rights to us.
I mean he wanted to give it away.
We had to cut him out.
But now It feels like he's haunting us.
(BANGING) Excuse me.
When Darlene said Xavier was haunting her, I thought about Xavier's obituary.
Why? Because Xavier was survived by a sister.
And when Dave showed me the obituary her name was right there.
It was right there.
I- you know it’ll be better if I show you in the reveal.
The what? THIS is a reveal.
Why are you showing me pictures of Penny Rickson? That is not her real name.
Her real name is Kylie Morton.
She's Xavier's sister.
And She likes to shoot things.
She moves into Jeff's apartment building and makes friends with him.
Learns all about the company and the crazy "team-building" thingy that they do.
Follows him and Trevor to work.
Bingedy bangedy boom, she takes down the company.
She must have broken into Chet's garage.
She did have that bandage on her hand when we met her.
She hurt it smashing the window, to help herself to a musket.
Chet doesn't report it because of his love of the police.
- That's on you.
- And she must have texted Darlene from Chet's phone Knowing that we would eventually find it.
And framing Darlene for hiring Chet maybe.
Taking down all three, avenging her brother.
Grief unhinges people.
Your words.
Penny.
Hey.
Can we talk? I don't wanna talk.
Tell me what's going on.
Penny Can you take your hand out of the car? I'm starting to get a little nervous.
Penny, I saw a video of your brother this morning.
He was amazing.
I bet he was always the smartest guy in the room.
Which made him a little bit awkward.
A little bit of a loner.
I miss him so much.
We all miss him.
You don't know anything about my brother! (GUNSHOTS) Penny.
Don't! What can I do? Put the gun down.
We can talk.
Penny.
This doesn't have to happen.
Penny, please.
This doesn't need to get any worse.
I'm sorry.
- I'm sorry.
- Penny.
(GUNSHOT) - Hey.
- Hey.
How is Penny? She's still in the hospital.
But she'll be OK.
She's even got a lawyer now.
A guy from JTD.
I guess Darlene had a conscience after all.
I mean they won't let her go free but, you know, maybe they can get her some help.
Oh and I found this in her stuff.
She must have taken it from the crime scene before we arrived to make it look more like Trevor did it.
That all sounds good.
What's up? I shot her.
She killed two people, Harley.
She could have killed me.
She could've killed anybody else who just happened to be walking by.
