Breaking Hearts and Playing Parts

1 Previously on Chesapeake Shores You sign up, you lose control.
Switching out one bad relationship for another.
I don't feel that way with you.
Jay Ross, third-grade-teacher-slash-playground-monitor.
[SARAH.]
: You know, your mom is really into this wedding thing.
Maybe there's a compromise.
- I'm good with whatever you want.
- You mean it? [MEGAN.]
: Hasn't changed, has it, since we got married here? "He knew that it was time to leave.
" Simon [SIMON.]
: I knew that you were unhappy, Bree, but it would hurt me too much to know that I was responsible.
[SIGHS SADLY.]
The "USS Kelsey" is no more.
Sunk by a torpedo of irony.
After 53 years, the set of "The Good Ship Forever" is finally destroyed by water from a leaky roof? Hey, at least it wasn't termites.
I mean, I sign on to be producer of the school play, and a week later, I'm captain of the "Titanic.
" The most romantic movie ever.
You do realize it doesn't end well, right? Yeah, but before the iceberg thing, it's true love.
Oh, look at all of these names of all the students, writing them on the sets.
They're going to be all thrown away.
Ooh! I remember when I was cast in the school play.
I was so happy.
Well, right now, I'm stupidly happy, because I just rewrote the ending of my play.
Wait is "stupidly happy" a thing like "stupidly beautiful"? Yeah, and didn't you just break up with Simon last week? Shouldn't you be less - Stupidly happy? - Yeah.
And didn't you also say that your original ending was perfect and that Jace and Melanie "were bound together by the past but hopeful for a love that would " [SIMULTANEOUSLY.]
"Last forever.
" [BREE SCOFFS.]
I love happy endings.
Have you seen the ending? Which is the best part, because it's realistic.
It's sad, it's depressing, just like my play now, where Jace and Melanie realize that, eventually, love fades, and so must they.
That's not happy at all.
'Cause it's not meant to be.
It's meant to be real.
I have had enough real between work, and the ship, and Trace? Yeah.
I just, I can't imagine my life without him, but I also cannot imagine getting back together with him.
I'm afraid of what it would mean if I go back.
[CARRIE.]
: All we need is a tall ship.
[CAITLYN.]
: And a star to steer her by.
- [ADULTS GASP IN DELIGHT.]
- [CHEERING.]
Yay! [CHUCKLING.]
Um, so what are you going to do now? Uh, [CLEARING THROAT.]
I am going to start by rebuilding these sets, and then, uh the rest of my life.
[KID.]
: You know, we could just pretend there's a ship.
- [JAY.]
: That's very sweet.
- Yep.
[JAY.]
: But I'm working on it.
We know someone who can help fix the sets.
Really? Yeah, he can fix anything.
He's even better than our grandpa.
- What's his name? - Trace Riley.
"The" Trace Riley? Um, okay.
Well, thanks for sharing.
Here, let's put this over there, okay? Right in front of that big wave.
Happy Birthday, Dad.
Thanks.
It's nice being able to celebrate with the entire family.
Yeah, it feels, uh, really great being home.
Well, we missed having you around.
And congrats on getting your club back.
It feels good to be running the place again.
Everything's almost back to the way it was.
Everything? How's Abby doing? Right now, we've decided to take some space.
To tell you the truth, it feels a little weird to be back, not being a part of her life.
Well, your relationship has never been easy.
No, it hasn't.
But if you two are meant to be together, you'll find your way back.
- Hey, Dad - Hmm? Are you going to blow out that candle or what? [LAUGHING.]
Okay.
Which means we can finalize the dress, and I'd love to book the venue, but until I can reach Sarah, we're sort of at a standstill.
Well, it's a year until the wedding.
I think we have time.
Mick, it goes fast.
Well, it did with us.
Engaged in September, married in October.
That's crazy.
I don't know what we were thinking.
I guess we were wondering how long it'd take to call my parents Mom and Dad.
So, what do you think? About the wine? Well, it's complex, elegant, crisp, with earthy oak undertones.
About you and me, Mick.
What are we doing? I think we're sitting here, having a nice dinner.
[SIGHS.]
- I'm serious.
- So am I.
Look, Megan, I don't know where we're going with all this, but right now, I'm just having a terrific time just sitting here with you.
Isn't that enough? Yeah, it's nice.
Plane ticket already paid I'm gone but it don't mean nothing I'm close even though I'm far away [.]
That's how I remember you Stuck here on the red-eye special I can't wait to see you again [.]
So don't think of me not being around [.]
Just listen for the sweet, sweet sound Of the taxi pulling up the driveway I'm coming home soon [.]
I'm coming home soon [.]
[.]
I'll be there when they're done Some day, our big ideas go beyond us So the answer's still no? The answer has been no since I walked off stage in Prague.
I'm just surprised you're still here.
Well, I wasn't asking you.
I was asking Emma.
Trace, what do you think? I think it's your decision to make.
Mr.
Hall I mean, Mark, I really appreciate the offer, but I'm going to have to pass.
I guess you got your answer.
For now.
Emma! It's been a pleasure.
Well, hopefully, I'll be seeing the both of you real soon.
- Take care, Mark.
- Take care, Trace.
Till the world kicks out our knees May we pick up the pieces quicker than we used to [.]
Have you seen Kevin? No.
I'm assuming he's doing double shifts at the station.
Mm or just busy being in love.
Well, there is that.
You look tired.
Yeah, well, I've been doing double shifts, too.
Dilpher Concrete? Mm-hmm.
Apparently, he's trying to cut a deal by naming co-conspirators.
Is he saying you were part of it? Yep.
What are you going to do? Well, unless he recants, there's nothing I can do but take him to court.
- Where even if you win, you lose.
- Mm-hmm.
[SIGHS WEARILY.]
No offense, but you look kind of tired, too.
[CHUCKLES.]
Hmm.
Thank you Just, on top of everything else I'm dealing with, now the "USS Kelsey" has been destroyed.
There was a leak in the storage container over the winter, and - Actually, I was wondering - Oh, honey, I-I can't, I'm sorry.
I'm just swamped.
I'd love to, but I can't.
Okay.
I just don't know who else to ask.
This is a Mies van der Rohe 258 daybed, designed in 1930 with a chrome metal frame that lifts the tufted leather mattress.
Manufactured in 1962, this Bauhaus-school daybed is the epitome of mid-century modern.
Very nice Jess? This couch has comfy cushions [SIGHING.]
Oh, yeah.
Well, it's a very tough decision.
Remember, I'm your sister.
And I bake scones, which I just happen to have - [EXAGGERATED GASP.]
- a freshly-baked basket of them on the Mies van der Rohe 258.
That is unfair.
I just think that the inn would benefit from a different aesthetic.
- What's wrong with the old one? - Nothing, except I didn't have anything to do with it.
Why is this even called a daybed? You don't sleep on it.
Jess, this is our inn.
It's supposed to be about sharing - and making decisions together.
- [TIMER BEEPING.]
My souffle.
Is anybody hungry? You know what, I don't think anybody is hungry.
Actually, I kind of am hungry.
Okay, fine, you know what? Turn on your sister.
Join Team David.
I can't believe you wanted to help.
I didn't.
I came here to get help.
Oh, right.
Yeah, what's going on? Well [SIGHS HEAVILY.]
Danielle told me that she loves me.
That's great.
No, it's-it's not great.
It's not even remotely great, because I didn't say "I love you" back.
I just I just kind of stood there, stunned, and then she kissed me.
And then what did you do? I kissed her back.
Ah, yeah That's not great.
[.]
[NELL.]
: And how is your vision board coming? - Almost finished.
- And? And it's full of inspiring quotes and beautiful images, and I'm stuck.
- I'm sure you'll figure it out.
- Hmm.
The problem is, I know who I was, I know who I am, but I'm blocked as to what's next.
Well, maybe it's just that you don't want to see what your heart already knows.
You think I'm afraid of moving forward? I think that, for the past 18 years, you've been trying to fix the past or repair what was done, but erasing the slate is not nearly as magnificent as painting a new picture.
[GROANS.]
Mick and I have to say something to the kids, don't we? Darling, if you're asking the question, you already know the answer.
It just seems so premature.
I mean, I don't know if it's going to last, and how are they going to react? I think you should give your children more credit, but be sure you have food there when you break the news.
Food always helps.
[SIGHS.]
Love is fleeting.
There is no such thing as everlasting love, happy endings, or once upon a time.
We start in darkness, we live in darkness, just to face the approaching night.
The dichotomies between life and death, happiness and sadness, good and evil Bree, look, I'd love to discuss dichotomies, too, but are you okay? Wha ? Yeah, I'm fine.
I'm great.
I'm great.
We're here, we have the real stage, the sets are being built, I'm Why? Do you not like the writing? No, the writing is, as always, poetic and lovely I mean, a bit overwritten, but Well I'm not sure this is the direction you want to go.
But it's it's real, right? Real as in real depressing.
Yeah.
Think about it, hmm? I really liked what we had.
But change is good.
Not always.
- Hey.
- Hey.
You know, I have a lot of respect for the decision you made.
It's not easy to turn down an offer like that Trace and Mark Hall can be pretty persuasive when he wants to be.
Yeah, he's a hard guy to turn down.
He tells you everything you want to hear.
Listen Yeah, but if it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
He told me you'd say that.
Well, that's because we disagree on a few things.
You know, for me, it's all about staying true to who I am.
There's a million Mark Halls out there, but there's only one Trace Riley? I was going to say you.
Yeah.
Right.
I'm serious.
Right now is the time for you to figure out who you want to be as an artist and what you want to say.
You've got to know who you're doing it for.
[JAY, UNSURE.]
: Trace Riley? Yeah, can I help you? Wow.
[LAUGHS.]
It's really you.
This is awesome.
Uh Nice to meet you, uh Right, Jay Ross.
Sorry.
I teach third grade at Chesapeake Elementary.
I'm directing the school play this year.
[CHUCKLES.]
"The Good Ship Forever" I was the admiral.
No way! That's so cool.
Yeah, you would've been great, - absolutely.
- Thanks.
Anyways, look, I'm really sorry to bother you, but the sets were destroyed, water damage, and I hear that Trace Riley can build anything.
I would love to help, but as you can see, I have a business to run, and No, no, no, of course, of course, it's a bit of a silly request.
It's just You know, I'm a little embarrassed to even come here.
It's just you know, we're really in a bind, the school play is this week, and two of my students said that you might Wait a second Carrie and Caitlyn Winters? Yeah.
Yeah, that's the two.
I think I can make some time.
I'll come by tomorrow afternoon? Uh, wow That's You're so generous.
- All right.
Yeah, you got it.
- Thank you.
Yeah, no, it's - It is.
- I know, but I mean, do you love her? I don't know.
[JESS.]
: I mean, you've been together for years.
[CONNOR.]
: Then I think I do, but it's just every time we're together, all we have in common is law.
Everything else, we just see differently but every so often, we have an amazing time together, and I feel really close to her, but then I don't know.
Okay, well, Connor, not every moment in a relationship is supposed to be perfect.
- Right? - [KNOWING CHUCKLES ALL ROUND.]
I know, I know, but when we have them, they don't last and then it really feels like we just start all over again.
Well, my advice don't discuss furniture.
Connor, we have a saying in Ireland.
"The truth can't be seen with the eyes.
Only with the heart.
" Okay, I'm intrigued.
Stop overthinking it.
You can't think love.
You have to feel it.
Not in the head, but in the heart.
Right, girls? - Yep.
- Yes.
Hey, where is Kevin? Is he coming? I haven't heard he isn't.
Well, we might as well get started, okay? [CAR DOOR SLAMS DISTANTLY.]
Oh, they're here.
Kevin! And Sarah Hi.
- [JESS.]
: Finally! - Hi, guys.
Listen, if you guys will both take a seat, we've got a toast to make for you.
Yeah, uh, Dad, well, before you get to the whole "blue lady of the sky" part, we have an announcement to make.
Kevin and I We just got married.
- [GASPS.]
- Wow.
Seriously? - [LAUGHING.]
- [MICK.]
: Oh, wow.
- Congratulations.
- Congrats.
- - [.]
We didn't mean to upset you.
No, it's fine.
It's just we wanted to get married, right away.
Yeah.
We're going to move over to Sarah's place because she has a house.
Oh, that's great.
I'm going to rent a trailer for tomorrow for the move.
Mm.
Mom, I know that you really wanted this for Sarah and me, and I know how much it meant to you, but it's just something that we had to do, for us.
Honey, really, I understand.
I get it.
Okay? In fact, I can use the extra time.
I mean, I've got so much going on at work right now, and um, this wedding has just been so time-consuming.
- Whew! - [MICK.]
: And we're happy for you.
[KEVIN.]
: Thanks.
Yeah, so you ran away together.
That's what we wanted to do when we first met.
[ABBY.]
: Do you think Mom's ever going to get over this? [JESS.]
: Yes.
No.
I don't know.
- [SHOP BELL JINGLES.]
- [BREE.]
: It's probably us, right? We're too pushy, right, probably? [JESS.]
: Us, pushy? No, absolutely not.
I mean, maybe.
Yes.
You know, I don't know.
I'm-I'm sorry.
I'm still processing furniture.
What, you and David haven't worked things out yet? Uh, well, sort of.
Well, it started okay, with the pink sheets, but then we started arguing about mid-century modern again.
I have a really hard time believing this is just about furniture.
I don't know.
I honestly don't care about Bauhaus, or doghouse, or any kind of house.
It's just this place is truly ours, so it should feel like us.
It should feel special.
Instead of both of us, it doesn't feel like either of us.
Well, have you talked to David about it? Not really.
I just sat on my sofa and then he sat on his daybed, and then we both just sat.
Well, maybe you should try pushing the couches together.
I don't think they'll fit, and I don't mean that metaphorically.
I just They seriously they don't fit.
- So - Mm.
You know what? I totally understand the whole elopement thing.
I mean, personally, I wouldn't even want my parents there, but a wedding isn't just about the family.
It's about the bride and groom.
I guess, but there's pros and cons to both.
Um, hey, could we, um, - could we talk for, like, a quick second? - Sure.
The other night, when you said what you said I didn't say anything back, because I didn't know how I felt.
What about now? Now [KEVIN.]
: No, no.
Wait, wait, wait.
Whoa, you said that you loved the Crabster.
[SARAH.]
: Nope, this stays in the truck.
I've had the Crabster since freshman year in high school! It was the team mascot.
And where would you like the Crabster to go? I was thinking the bedroom.
In the bedroom? The one that we share? Suddenly, I'm starting to think that this is a trick question.
- Excuse me.
- Connor, Danielle What do you think of this? - It's awesome.
- It's terrifying.
All right, well, then, I guess it's yours.
Yes! [CHUCKLES.]
[CHUCKLING IN DELIGHT.]
You know what, I actually kind of like it.
- You do? - I do.
Seriously? Why? I don't know, it sort of reminds me of you.
It's funny, unique, a little weird sweet.
I love you.
[CHUCKLES.]
I love you, too.
Well, you're talking about reputation.
Well, yeah, that, too.
Everyone I've spoken to is completely aware that you had nothing to do with Dilpher, but they're trying to protect their reputations by avoiding yours.
So flying to New York for a face-to-face with the bank wouldn't make any difference? No, not this time.
I know how you've felt about this in the past, to have anyone speak for you besides you, but have you given any more thought to hiring a PR firm? Oh, I'm not comfortable putting myself out on social media and putting out glossy brochures.
That's not exactly all they do.
It's about market-testing responses and creating a media campaign to target specific demographics.
Adam, I have spent my entire life doing business with a handshake.
It's a brave new world, Mick.
I know this isn't who you are or what you believe, but I don't see another way.
Sometimes, face to face won't cut it.
[MESSAGE ALERT CHIMES.]
[TAPPING REPLY.]
- Mick? - Hmm? Tell the PR firm they're on the clock.
I'll bring everyone in.
It's going to be a late one.
You saw Springsteen at the Garden in '02.
I was there.
I got in so much trouble.
We took my dad's Buick and drove for, like, 24 hours straight.
Me too! I was grounded for a week.
It was worth it, though.
- Best show ever.
- Trace! - Trace, you're here! - Hey, girls! I missed you guys.
[SNAPPING FINGERS.]
You know, Trace volunteered his time - to help us rebuild the sets.
- That's awesome.
Are you coming to the show? - I wouldn't miss it.
- Uncle Kevin's married.
- Really? - Yeah, they eloped.
Good for them.
Okay, break is over for the cast and director Hi, Trace.
Hey, Abby.
Oh, you two know each other.
Right, of course.
Yeah.
Um I had Trace do the sets for us.
Yeah, you know, I think they're going to be better than the originals.
Absolutely.
Well, that's great.
Um uh, these girls, though, need to get to rehearsal, so let's, uh, let Trace get back to work.
- All right.
Thanks.
- I wonder who's going to get to hold up - the boat.
- I hope I get to.
Do you think we're going to get props? I hope so.
[JAY.]
: Okay, now, where were we? Let's open that up.
Okay.
Who studied their lines? - [GIRLS.]
I did! - Great! Nice work, okay.
Okay The "USS Kelsey" is ready to set sail.
And now we don't just have our hands to steer us but our hearts to guide the way.
Jay, do you want to say something? Oh, right.
That's great, guys! [CLAPPING.]
Really great job! And now they bow, or? Yeah, yeah, definitely bows Let's bow.
[LAUGHING.]
Wow, you really have no idea what you're doing.
Oh, none, no.
All right, guys, next stop Broadway, wow.
Uh, let's pack up, and make sure you get your costumes to Mrs.
Willacy, okay? - Okay, let's go.
- Brings back memories, huh? Mom, you look nice.
Oh, uh, yeah, I had a a business meeting that got canceled tonight, so I decided to come see the stars of the show.
[GASPS.]
And here they are! Hello, guys! - Hi, Mimi! - Hi.
I'm the admiral, just like Grandpa.
Ah, well, I salute you, sir.
Would you like to go have ice cream to celebrate? - Yes.
- Come on.
- Ahoy! - Ahoy! Me mateys! Do you still say "mateys"? - Of course we do.
- [MEGAN.]
: Mateys! [GROANS WEARILY.]
So considering I have no idea what I'm doing, how am I doing? [CHUCKLES.]
Well, this play is 53 years old, and I think the "USS Kelsey" will still be going strong long after we're gone.
Well, you haven't seen what I have in store for the finale.
There's a very good chance that I'm sinking this ship.
Then I guess we're going down together.
[LAUGHING.]
Oh, and I do always keep one of these on hand in case of emergencies, so - [LAUGHS.]
- And when you're done, you know, you could use it as a personal flotation device.
Oh, okay.
Well, actually, you know what? Oh, what is this? [CHUCKLING.]
So, uh you and Trace you guys go way back? Uh, yeah.
We, um we dated for quite a long while.
Wow, I just made everything more awkward.
Thank goodness for juice boxes.
No, no, it's fine.
It's, uh it's complicated, but it's over, and we're just, you know - Friends? - Yeah.
Yeah, just friends.
So, uh, you know, if this doesn't make it more awkward, and you feel like moving beyond the juice boxes, we could try food.
Dinner, maybe? [CHUCKLES AWKWARDLY.]
I-I just I have so much going on right now with the lawyers and Yeah, yeah everything.
But, you know, I could I could do lunch.
All right.
[CHUCKLING.]
Uh, cheers.
[LAUGHING.]
All right.
[.]
This is nice.
I love your new place.
It's so romantic.
Jess? I love my couch.
It's so cozy.
And I love my daybed.
It's so firm.
Okay, fun.
Uh, Connor, maybe you guys want to go get some snacks? - Yeah, yeah, that sounds like a great idea.
- Sure, yeah.
There's some porcini mushroom tartlets - on the counter there.
- [CONNOR.]
: Cool.
Okay.
David, switch places with Jess.
Jess, switch with David.
At once.
David, you're Jess.
Jess, you're David.
Make your case.
[IN MOCKING TONE.]
: Well, when I was attending Harvard, we used to lounge around on uncomfortable, uptight couches.
That's not how I talk.
You're right.
I'm sorry.
That was totally unfair.
Why don't you go first? Okay.
[INHALING DEEPLY.]
[IMITATING JESS.]
: Okay, well, here's the thing.
See, I purchased this couch because it reminded me of the couch from the "Titanic," but it's not actually the couch from the "Titanic," because the "Titanic" sank, and I found it online, and I got Kevin to help me out, and we borrowed Dad's car, but Dad's car broke down, but that's a whole another story, and I don't want to talk about that, and I love this couch because I purchased it as, like, my first adult purchase, and I when I was sitting on it, I thought, "Maybe one day, I'll own an inn," and that's why I love it so much.
That's all true.
How did you know that? Because I know you.
[CLEARS THROAT.]
Well, this daybed was probably really important to me because growing up on my yacht no? - No.
In my house - Uh-huh.
I used to read on it, as a kid, and I would read cookbooks, and it's where I decided to be a chef! Yes.
I love this daybed.
It helped me get me through my childhood.
It's it's almost a part of me.
[JESS.]
: And that's what I'm scared of.
I'm scared if I give up the couch, I'll lose a part of me, too [SIGHS.]
but I do love the daybed.
And I do love the couch.
Okay how about this? We put these somewhere else, and for the main room, we get, like, a - We each get something else.
- Yes.
We just get something new, something us.
Yes, exactly.
- I love you.
- I love you more.
That was perfect.
That was a perfect, happy ending.
It was full of hope, and promise, and understanding, and love.
Why can't everybody have a happy ending? Why can't why can't I ever have a happy ending? I mean, nobody wants to hurt, or feel alone, or feel horrible just because they left somebody.
Right? I mean, even if even if you're not right for each other even if he did go back to England, and and I miss him, and I know that I made the right decision.
I know that, but that doesn't make it any easier, and I just, I I I really loved the way he made me feel.
I loved his smile [SIGHS.]
and I just ruined my play.
No no.
Hey, hey You didn't ruin your play.
It's okay.
It's really nice to spend the afternoon together.
- We haven't done this in so long.
- Yeah, - I'm glad it worked out.
- Yeah.
Hi.
Two éclairs, please But you've been pretty quiet.
No, no, I'm just enjoying the day.
Well, usually, when you're this quiet, it means you have something to say.
I'm guessing this is about Abby.
I think Abby's moving on And? [CHUCKLES.]
And I'm having a little trouble dealing with it.
Well, it must be so difficult.
How do you know? - I met the guy.
- Oh? You know, the funny thing is, I actually like him.
You know, he's a good guy, which makes it even worse.
It's just hard seeing her with someone else.
Maybe because you can't imagine yourself with someone else.
Maybe you need to start thinking that way.
I'm not sure I'm ready to do that.
I just don't want you to miss out on what's in front of you.
That I'll fall in love again? Just keep your heart open? Have I told you that before? Maybe once, when I was 18.
[ABBY.]
: Kim won't leave the stage, and she just keeps insisting that her son, Kyle, needs to be the admiral, and then Jay marches downstage - Please stop.
- And he says, "Mrs.
Baxter, I am Jay Ross, the director of this stage.
Vision and ship are mine, - and I am going to steer them all " - No, no, no, no, no, no! " To victory!" What does that even mean? Oh, I have no idea.
I guess I was caught up in the moment.
- But it worked? - Yeah, I think so.
I mean, Kyle's a he's a good kid, but he's not the best actor, you know? [JESS.]
: Hey, at least it was a happy ending.
Just like the "Titanic.
" I guess they do happen, on occasion.
Aw Thank you.
Yeah.
[CHUCKLES.]
What? I'm out of juice boxes.
[LAUGHTER.]
[.]
[MEGAN.]
: You think a rose is going to make up for canceling on me? You think I should've gone with a bouquet? Just so you know, Carrie and Caitlyn were very impressed by my dress.
After I got your text, I went to their rehearsal.
Well, I'm sorry I didn't get a chance to see it.
I'm sorry, too.
Carrie told me you've been helping her with her lines, which, apparently, you still know? Well, I was a pretty darn good admiral in my day.
As was Kevin.
It's good to know that the "USS Kelsey" - is on its third generation of O'Briens.
- Mm-hmm.
Megan, I'm sorry about canceling.
Things are getting out of hand at the office, the business is changing.
The world is changing, and I'm having to change with it.
Old dog, new tricks? Salty dog, new tricks.
[CHUCKLES.]
[SIGHS.]
On second thought, I think a rose will cover it.
Mick, our son is married.
He is.
We could have more grandkids soon.
If we're lucky.
Mm.
[.]
[SIGHS.]
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
I don't know, maybe the problem's with me, Gran.
I mean, maybe I do love her, and I'm just I'm picking things apart that don't actually matter, and maybe Danielle is the right girl for me.
Ooh, that's a lot of maybes and you can't hide in a field of them.
Maybe I'm still not sure.
Or maybe you'll know when you stop saying "maybe.
" The thing is, we've just become such good friends, I I just, I don't want to lose that.
Well, that's no reason to be staying in a relationship.
You should always like who you love, but you don't always love who you like.
[CHUCKLING IN DELIGHT.]
Wow Well, and I here I thought he was just another country-star turned-carpenter.
You know, I once painted my little sister's bedroom.
- Well, that's sweet.
- Yeah, that's what I thought, but I might have forgotten to ask.
[LAUGHS.]
- How old were you? - Eight.
Good news is, I only painted five feet up the wall.
Neither of us could reach any higher.
[SIGHS.]
He saved the names.
[JESS.]
: People are going to start coming in soon.
We're not supposed to be in here.
Sailboats make me nervous, plays make me nervous.
We're going to get in so much trouble.
- David.
- It's okay, I asked the director.
I don't I don't get this.
[WHISPERING.]
Come on, come on, come on.
- What? I I don't get this.
- Okay, look.
We're opening the inn in a couple weeks, and before we do, I wanted to celebrate before, just the two of us.
- [JESS.]
: Here? - Yeah, here.
Ready? Close your eyes.
All right, take my hand.
Turn this way.
Keep them closed.
- What's happening? - This way Forward.
- [GASPING IN REALIZATION.]
Is this ? - Okay, keep 'em closed.
- Keep 'em keep 'em closed.
- Are we ? - Step up, step up, step up, step up.
- Oh, my Okay, hold on to the railing Do you trust me? I trust you.
Open them.
[GASPS.]
I'm flying Jack! [SILENT SQUEAL.]
I love you, David.
[SOBS.]
This is awesome! I don't know, it just doesn't it doesn't feel right.
Yeah, I sort of lifted it from something I read.
It felt better when I wrote it.
Why don't we just continue the metaphor? "The river knows there ain't no hurry, it's as steady as the stars, and every shoreline has something to say " [STARTS STRUMMING.]
Winds its way down to the sea It might be near or far And it only knows it'll get there someday That works.
It's, uh It's hopeful.
Yeah.
At some point, we all end up where we're supposed to be.
Sometimes.
[LAUGHING.]
What do you say we start from the second verse? I'll lead you in with a four-bar intro? - Okay.
- All right.
[.]
The river knows there ain't no hurry It's as steady as the stars And every shoreline has something to say [.]
Winds its way down to the sea It might be near or far [SINGING TOGETHER.]
And it only knows It'll get there someday Sometimes When the night is dark And the world wants to take my heart And it feels like the sun will never shine I know It'll turn around Lay low Keep holding out for some day Some way Sometime the w [STOPS STRUMMING.]
I'm sorry.
I I shouldn't have done that.
[CLEARS THROAT.]
I don't believe in happy endings.
I believe in happy beginnings, with each moment a new chapter, beginning with 'I do.
' I do love, I do hope, I do cherish that we always will be husband and wife.
" I think this ending works better.
- [CLEARING THROAT.]
Yeah.
- Mm-hmm.
It's why people will love this play.
It's why I love it that no matter what happens in life, after we deal with the pain there's always hope.
Okay.
Okay, let's set up the restaurant scene.
[SIGHS.]
Thank you.
Isn't this great? We haven't hung out like this forever.
What are you talking about? We've been spending lots of time together.
Well, yeah, but with your family.
What's wrong with my family? Well, I just want to hang out with you, not Jess, and Kevin, and Bree all the time, with all their problems.
You don't like my family much, do you? What? No, it's not that It's not that I don't like them.
I just I mean, Connor, I've told you, I'm not big on families.
And that's not exactly an answer, Danielle.
Look, I've been pushing mine away for too long.
I can't do that again.
My family is everything to me.
- And I'm not? - Of course you are, and I do love you, and we have these beautiful, beautiful moments together, but they're just, I don't know moments.
So I keep trying because I want things to be different, but But? I don't exactly know what I want [CRYING.]
but I think we want different things.
Look, Emma, I'm sorry about last night.
- It's no big deal.
- No, it is.
I'm kind of your boss.
You know, it's not exactly appropriate.
Well, I didn't have a problem with it.
It's just I'm not used to someone like you a good guy.
Why'd you come back to Chesapeake - really? - Ugh.
I, uh I always knew who I was singing for, so to speak, but I finally figured out that just singing for her wasn't enough.
And now? I guess I figured things out a bit too late.
She's moving on.
Maybe it's time for me to do the same.
Trace I wanted to tell you earlier The offer Mark Hall made me before he left? Yeah? I'd get a record deal if I could convince you to come on tour with me.
Why didn't you tell me that your deal hinged on me going back out? Why weren't you honest with me? It wouldn't have changed my decision.
You sure about that? I mean, is that what this is about a record deal? No, Trace.
I'm sorry.
I wasn't trying to keep it from you.
But you did.
[CONNOR.]
: Another announcement? [FAMILY LAUGHING AND CHATTING.]
[KEVIN CLEARS THROAT.]
Listen, before we get started, we wanted to make an announcement.
You're kidding, right? No, I'm afraid not.
We wanted to talk to you about us eloping.
And even though it was the right thing for us, it might not have been the right thing for everyone else.
We are so sorry, too, if we tried to make you do something you didn't want to do, honey.
Which is why we gave this a lot of thought and if it's okay, we'd love to have a wedding reception here, for both of our families.
Is that okay? - Mom and Dad? - [CRYING JOYFULLY.]
Oh, honey That's so wonderful.
Yes! [LAUGHS.]
[ALL LAUGHING HAPPILY.]
[MICK.]
: You're not going to keep this simple, are you? [CHUCKLES.]
Cheers.
- Cheers! - Cheers.
- Cheers - Cheers.
- [CLINKING GLASSES.]
- [EVERYONE.]
: Cheers.
- [LAUGHTER.]
- [EVERYONE.]
: Cheers.
Cheers! Cheers.
Cheers!
