Chicago P.D. (2014) s08e14 Episode Script

Safe

My dad used to take me and Will here all the time when we were kids.
It's like the seventh year in a row that we've been here for his birthday.
I'm honored.
The bartender, Marco, he's like 90-something.
He still makes a great martini, but he mixes me and Will up every time he sees us.
It's awesome.
Does Marco know his way around a whisky sour, - is the question? - Yes, he does.
This line is taking forever.
Yeah, it is.
Hold on.
Oh, God.
Dude, it won't fit.
Just badge the valet, we'll get a trophy spot, - end of story.
- I got this.
Well, that was the curb.
But, you're adorable.
I'm not sure that was a compliment.
How's that for a compliment? Honestly, I'm not sure if you meant it.
You kind of phoned it in.
Was the second bottle of red my bad decision or your bad decision? I'm pretty sure it was mutual.
Morning, campers.
Someone's got the Irish flu.
Hailey? Hold up, come here.
Voight's looking for you.
About last night.
Class you were supposed to teach.
You know not everyone gets picked to be a guest instructor at the academy.
I got that covered.
Was there a problem? Did you know Voight was gonna be there? Thanks.
This is a total Ruzek move, am I right? Oh, God, absolutely.
I think I have some in my desk.
Yes, please.
Hey, Sarge, you got a sec? What's up? Um I just wanted to talk to you about - what happened last night.
- Everything okay? Yeah, just something personal came up.
Hm.
Anything of concern? - No, it was just a dinner.
- Hm.
I'm really sorry, Sarge.
97% of the class still needs to be trained, you're good.
Sarge, call came over the zone.
Home invasion in progress, Goethe and Stone.
Sounds like the same crew we've been tracking.
All right, put us down responding.
Have patrol hold down that perimeter, let's go.
All right, bring me up to speed.
Neighbors heard a gunshot.
Saw a man from the back entering the home.
Not sure if anyone's inside.
Vehicle in the garage? Registered to the homeowners.
All right, Kim and I got the back.
- You four take the front.
- Copy that.
Body.
I got a weapon here.
He's got a pulse.
You guys go, I got this.
5021 George, got a man down inside.
GSW to the chest, roll an ambo.
We're gonna keep clearing.
- Whoa, whoa, wait.
- Go away! It's okay, it's okay.
We're the police, we're the police.
We're here to help you.
It's okay, put the bat down.
- It's okay.
- Gonna keep clearing.
It's okay.
Are they gone? They're gone, they're gone.
They're gone, they're gone, they're gone.
It's okay.
It's okay.
It's okay.
Aw, it's okay.
You're safe now, you're safe.
It's okay.
Hey, can you guys give us a sec? Thanks, guys.
Megan, your husband made it to the hospital.
They're rushing him in to surgery.
They said his vitals look good.
We're gonna have one of our officers drive you there to meet him.
Thank you.
We understand how hard this must be, but if you could just try to tell us what happened.
I was on my way to work.
I forgot my phone.
I came back parked in our garage.
Next thing you know, there's a gun at my neck.
And a glove around my mouth.
And a guy demanding I punch in our security code.
- It was just one person? - There were two.
A huge guy who was in charge.
Both had um those ski masks over their heads.
The big one pushed me inside, wanted to know where I kept my jewelry.
That's when That's when my husband came down the stairs.
He had his gun.
Peter yelled at the guy to put his down but then he just shot him.
Peter had no time to react, he just collapsed and It's okay, take your time.
The other one started screaming "No, no.
" I guess he got nervous.
I went to my husband, but the big one grabbed me.
Pulled me off of him, punched me.
He pushed me to the safe up in Peter's office.
I gave him the code.
They took everything, ran out fast.
I was frozen.
I didn't know if they were still in the house.
I should have gone to Peter.
I should have helped him.
I'll follow up with her at Med, see what else I can pull.
She mention how these guys talk? - Any accents? - Nothing that stood out.
We're thinking it's the same crew from the first two houses.
A big hot-head that's in charge, and a quiet one who takes his orders.
And the hot-head did the shooting? Yeah, the other guy had a gun, but he didn't use it.
So the neighbors say that she saw an offender jump in an empty silver BMW.
Didn't catch the tags, but I'm checking all the hot sheets for stolen Beamers ASAP.
I'm gonna check PODs and private security in the area.
Good.
The timing between hits is getting shorter.
I mean, that's the second one this week.
These pricks are starting to think they own this neighborhood.
So, the witness was spot on about the BMW.
These are the best shots that we got from the doorbell cam.
The small offender gets away with a bag of stolen goods.
The other offender hops in this car and the tags come back to a recent stolen from Lake Forest.
It's a dead end after that, my friends.
Well, we got an inventory of what was stolen? Well, it was insured, so list is pretty detailed.
They mostly got Megan's jewelry Peter Harper's another story.
They got his Submariner Rolex.
Diamond bezel and lugs.
That's at least 50 dimes.
Maybe those guys knew about the Rolex.
You know, maybe these hits aren't random.
Every place that's been hit has had a safe and specific valuables.
These guys are obviously doing their homework.
So if we figure out how, maybe we can catch them.
Check out some POD footage I've been looking at.
So, this is our Beamer.
Plates are confirmed, you can't see the occupants.
And this is I90, 11:17 a.
m.
It's 25 minutes after the Harper robbery.
The Beamer gets off at West Lawn, heads south.
Now there's three pawn shops, and a couple of thrift stores within one mile radius of that exit.
I don't think that's a coincidence.
Yeah, check it out.
All right, divide and conquer.
Oh, break in the case.
Burgess found a vintage Moon Dreamer doll for Makayla at Mickey's Second-Hand Gift Shop.
I hated those dolls.
She say anything else Anything helpful? Nope, she's 0 for 2.
Oh, it's better than us, what are we? - 0 for 4? - 5.
Hey.
Chicago PD.
Jeff Tolan.
Business or pleasure? Business.
We're chasing a robbery.
We need to see your inventory books.
No, nothing's come my way or I would have reported it.
Two years ago, I had a punk come in trying to move these fake American Buffalo gold pieces.
We worked with Detective Borkowski.
Out of area north.
Do you know Borkowski? 'Cause the guy's a mensch.
Hey, do you like rare coins? Okay.
Has anyone come in trying to sell this? That's a Rolex Submariner.
I would stab a guy for one of those.
I'm kidding, no I haven't seen it.
All right, look, we're looking, for a two-man robbery crew.
One guy's taller, the other guy's shorter.
They're driving a BMW.
A silver BMW? Yeah.
When I went to get coffee this morning, I saw this dope silver Beamer parked right in front.
I think I saw two guys inside.
Hey, Blaster, do me a favor.
Hang that Strat and shut up.
- Wait, what's your name? - Tom.
Everyone calls me Blaster.
What time you see the Beamer? Around 11:30.
That's usually when I go get coffee.
That's when my girl, Melissa, starts her shift over at Java on Rose.
You remember anything else about the car? Just that it wasn't mine.
If anything else comes up, let us know.
Is it just me, or was Tolan a little too nervous about that silver BMW? Nervous, defensive, paranoid.
All the above.
Okay, come on, here we go.
Jeff Tolan has a nice little sheet.
Two felony thefts, and he's out on a one year parole for a distro charge.
- He forgot to mention that.
- Mm-hmm.
Let's see what else He used to own a jewelry store on Maxwell, went bankrupt.
Two divorces, child care and alimony.
Sounds like a guy in need of some quick cash.
And there he is.
Okay, Tolan, let's see if you're stupid enough to take us to your partners.
Sarge, we've got eyes on our possible fence, Jeff Tolan.
He just parked at the old Shawnville Mall, - could be a meet.
- Do your thing.
- Keep me posted.
- Copy that.
What the hell is he doing? Put your hands in the air, don't move.
It's okay.
It's okay, I come in peace.
I want to help, I know the guys that you want.
All right? But they're watching me.
I gotta be careful.
Can you get me out of here now? Please? Thank you.
All right, a couple weeks ago, a guy named RJ approached me.
He's a big white dude.
He did all the talking.
He had a teenager with him, this Mexican kid.
The kid hung on his every word.
Very obedient.
I can't imagine they're there to hock a guitar.
They wanted to unload ruby earrings.
I'm talking high line, pure, vibrant red primo stones set in 18-karat white gold.
Like these? - Yeah.
- Those were stolen from a Gold Coast home three weeks ago.
Last house these guys hit, they shot the husband and brutally beat the wife.
Well, I'm aware of that now.
I wasn't at the time.
Okay, did you move the rubies? Yeah, they were worth 75k.
I had a buyer in New York that wired me the money.
And RJ showed up this morning? With your Rolex.
I took a photo of it.
And I'm supposed to be shopping a buyer.
Look, we have a meet scheduled for tomorrow at noon.
Here's what I'm thinking.
I'm thinking you guys wire me up.
We catch the exchange.
Win-win, right? You get a high profile bust, and I can pick up my kids from school.
And in the meantime, we wipe your felony charge? You know, I spoke with Detective Borkowski.
His memory of you isn't as fond as yours is of him.
He says your fingers are stickier than the burglars trying to move the merch.
Anything you want to tell us, Jeff? Come on, man, you want our help? Just come clean, you screw these guys over? Maybe a smidge.
The New York guy wired me 60, I said it was 50, and I gave them their cut from that.
It's an email from RJ.
The meet's still on for tomorrow.
- Why is he messaging you? - That he changed the location.
Has he changed the location before? No.
From where to where, tell us exactly.
Where was the original meet set? The Bean, Millennium Park.
It's crowded.
Now, RJ wants to meet Tolan under lower Canal off Cabrini Street.
Okay.
From high pedestrian traffic to desolate.
The place screams hit.
And there's no way we can stay close enough.
It's a surveillance nightmare.
Tolan's been skimming from the top, stealing from them.
- This could be payback.
- Okay, so What's the play? It's too risky, and there's too many variables.
We should hold him, and chase other leads.
Hailey? It's the safest bet.
If things go south, we're picking up a body.
Sarge.
Our home invasion just upgraded to murder.
Peter Harper just flatlined at Med.
Well we don't have time to play it safe.
We're using Tolan as bait.
Okay, Tolan.
This is gonna record everything.
So keep this in sight.
- No wires? - No wires.
- You okay? - Yeah.
Except for this, um this white car, yeah.
- What white car? - There was a white car that was circling my house last night like a few times.
And I couldn't see inside.
Look, you don't think RJ's setting me up, do you? I-it's normal to change a meet, right? Based on my experience, people don't usually kill people that are about to give them a lot of money.
Well, yeah, unless they think you're ripping them off.
We're gonna be right there.
You'll be fine.
- Okay? - Yeah.
I've got a good signal.
Same here, Sarge, everything's quiet.
Copy.
Jay, you set? - Yeah, I'm good.
- Copy.
It's supposed to go down in two minutes.
You think we'd be doing all this if the crew was hitting Englewood? No.
Sarge, I got a white van slow rolling my way.
Both occupants are looking around.
I got tags.
5021 Eddie, run Illinois plates for me.
Young David Henry, 842.
Sarge, the passenger's holding something shiny.
Looks like a weapon, we got to move in.
Wait, Jake, we're running plates.
All right, I'm just gonna get closer for a better eye.
Jay, are you sure you saw a weapon? I got a white car going towards Tolan, and Tolan said he saw a white vehicle circling his house, too.
He said he saw a car, this is a van.
If we don't move in and we're wrong, he's dead.
- I'm moving in.
- Hailey, stand down.
Let the van pass, we're running the plate.
Chicago P.
D.
, get your hands up.
Keep your eyes on me.
Keep your hands where I can see them.
What the hell is this? What are you doing here? Looking for our job site on Cortez Street.
That's a block over.
Told you.
Stand down, it's a negative.
Have a nice day.
This thing's gone from bad to worse.
His cover's blown, R.
J.
saw the police activity.
It's my bad, really.
I, uh I saw what I saw, and based on what we know about Tolan, I just didn't think we had a choice.
All right, I get it.
- We'll find another way.
- Okay.
Hailey, hold up.
What happened? You scared them off.
We had time to make those plates before you moved on that van.
I had the better eye.
You said go with your gut, - I went with my - Yeah, I said gut.
I said gut, not heart.
What does that mean? I have zero interest in having this conversation, but here we are, so here I go.
You and Jay, are you a thing? Does it matter? If it affects how you police, it matters.
It sure as hell matters.
It was the right move.
We made the right call, Sarge.
What if Voight was right? What if I did take your side because of us? I got nothing but respect for Voight.
But, Hailey, he's out of line here.
I made a judgment call, you backed me up.
And we've been working that way for years now.
I don't know I moved on instinct, I don't know what instinct.
I'm gonna talk to Voight in the morning.
No.
Let's keep our personal life private.
He's the one that went there first, Hailey.
I know, I get it.
But look, this whole work relationship thing is a little bit confusing for me.
So maybe we just need to set better boundaries.
So no more coming into work at the same time.
No more physical contact in the bullpen.
Okay.
I'm sorry.
I get it.
It's okay.
Morning.
- You're here early.
- Oh, look who's talking.
Insomnia kicked in, insomnia won, so here I am.
Hey listen, about yesterday.
I would have made the exact same call, okay? Don't beat yourself up, we're gonna get these guys.
Thanks, Ruz.
- Morning.
- Morning.
Hey, hey Sarge.
Hey guys, actually, I think I have something.
So I've been digging into the victims of the robberies and I think I found a nexus.
Okay.
The Rainers, Ellis Newton, Megan and Peter Harper They're all members of the Riverside Athletic Club.
That makes sense, that place is really expensive.
50 Gs just to get in the front door.
Yeah, so maybe someone who works there - is helping find targets.
- Chase it.
You and Jake talk to the victims, see if they remember someone from the club.
How long have you been members? Six years? You really think an employee did this? Yeah, it's possible.
When's the last time you or Peter was at the club? Two days ago, and we were there all the time.
Units in the 18th District, we're getting calls of a woman being forced into a home at 1433 East Scott.
Now called in shots fired, same address.
5021 George, hold us down responding.
We're three blocks out.
I'm so sorry, you guys stay safe.
Sarge, we got another shooting in the Gold Coast, we're headed there now.
On route, headed your way.
5021 George, on scene.
We're going in.
5021 Henry, 10-1, 10-1! Shots fired at the police.
Gunmen fleeing out the back I got her.
All right, Hailey, we're coming around.
We got it.
You okay? I got you, it's okay.
I got you.
No, no, no.
No.
Get out of the way! Stop! Come on, man, get your hands up.
Don't do it, don't do it.
Damn, it's locked.
5021 David, I got an offender going westbound down a gangway.
He's shedding his clothes from a green jacket to a blue T-shirt, he just hit the streets.
He's going southbound and he's armed I need units.
All right, I lost the car.
I need to put a BOLO out for a white Chrysler, Illinois tags.
Nora 4 Eddie 244 last seen fleeing westbound down Division.
They hit the safe.
We've got a body.
Anything on the Chrysler? Patrol just found it abandoned in Navy Pier.
It was stolen.
This is all the same M.
O.
as the other robberies.
They forced the housekeeper inside and they got into the safe.
What's the boy's name? Paul Sinclair.
Patrol's outside talking to the parents now.
They were supposed to be out of town.
Offenders must have known that.
Explains why they were so brazen.
But, Paul wasn't feeling well.
Parents went to work, Paul stayed home from school.
This should have never gone this far.
You're damn right.
Sarge.
This is Detective Hailey Upton.
I need an immediate impound order on a vehicle.
All right, it's a bit of a Hail Mary.
But we were able to ID both offenders.
We've put out active warrants, and an All-Call broadcast.
So far, nothing.
This is Miguel Almonte.
He left his prints on a Mercedes when Atwater was chasing him.
Kid's had a rough life.
Dad's in prison, Mom died in a car accident.
He's been in and out of the juvie system ever since.
He's a lost soul looking for a home and a father figure.
Right.
We think that he might have found found that father figure in this guy.
Meet Robert James Riggs, a.
k.
a.
RJ.
I sent this photo over to Tolan.
He confirmed this is the guy he's been dealing with.
RJ bailed Miguel out of jail last year when Miguel got pinched for shoplifting.
RJ grew up poor in the Bronx.
He's got an impressive sheet.
Assault and two armed robberies in New York He was into banks then.
But he paired up with a teenager back then, too.
Kid was shot and nearly killed by the police in a bust.
He did five years in Attica, was released two years ago, and has since made his way to Chicago.
Okay, so why Chicago? Unclear.
So, a Bronx career criminal and an inner city foster kid.
- How do they cross? - Right.
We think that Miguel used to live with RJ.
RJ's LKA is from a year ago in Oak Park.
Another family lives there now.
So we may have something.
Miguel's previous conviction was to do one year community service at an animal shelter.
So he completed that six months ago, but according to the supervisor, he still goes there every Wednesday, - including last week.
- Well today's Wednesday.
All right, you two head over there right now.
Sit on it meanwhile, remember, RJ's gotta find a new fence.
Let's work that angle too.
Good work.
What else did Voight say? What are you talking about? I saw you guys talking at the Sinclair house.
Just wanted to know what you said.
We were talking about the case.
I don't want to do this right now, Jay.
There's Miguel.
Hey! Chicago P.
D.
, stop! Police! Keep your hands where I can see them.
Come out nice and slow.
Crawl to me, nice and slow.
Let's go.
Get up.
I didn't do nothing.
Please.
I find that hard to believe.
Thank you sir, I appreciate it.
Is that man I knocked over all right? Yeah.
Yeah, he's fine.
But he's the least of your problems right now, Miguel.
When's the last time you saw him? I don't know, six months ago maybe.
Miguel, don't play it this way, man.
I'm your lifeline, okay? I don't know what you're talking about.
Talkin' about this.
Those are your fingerprints.
That's proof you've been robbing houses.
That little boy was murdered, Miguel.
I didn't do that.
Well, it doesn't matter you didn't shoot him.
That's a felony murder.
If you don't help us, you're going to prison for the rest of your life.
I can't help you.
Loyalty is honorable, but Do you know what a tinner's hammer is? No.
It's a small hammer, got a square head.
It's used to shape sheet metal.
My stepdad is a carpenter.
It's what he liked to beat me with because it left small bruises.
So I ran away.
I slept in dumpsters to stay warm.
I got my food at a homeless shelter and RJ RJ was one of those volunteers who comes in and hands out food.
He took me in, he saved my life.
I owe him everything.
So I won't turn him in, no way.
Did RJ ever tell you about a boy named Jose Subero? No.
RJ and Jose used to rob banks together in New York.
RJ left him bleeding out after a botched robbery.
And he nearly died.
RJ is a user.
He exploits desperate kids.
He sucks them into his crimes, he tosses them away like trash.
You're wrong.
Oh, he might actually care about you.
But it doesn't matter.
Sooner or later, he's gonna ruin you.
Look at where you are.
You walk away from him now, I promise you we're gonna get you a deal.
Tell us where he is.
Is he still in Chicago? I'm sorry that boy died.
I really am.
But I can't help you.
This kid's not gonna break.
Our strongest connection is still the Riverside Athletic Club.
Sinclairs were members there, too.
You think that's just a coincidence? Keep chasing it.
Hey.
- Hi.
- I'm working late too.
Midnight Desk Sergeant called in sick.
We're thinking of takeout downstairs.
- You in? - Nah, I'm all right.
- Thanks, Trudy.
- You're coming in early and staying extra late, what's going on? Working this home invasion crew.
I got eyes and ears.
You think you're in the dog house with Voight, and you're working twice as hard to prove yourself.
You know any other way? Sometimes you gotta know when to go home.
Thanks, Trudy.
More importantly, we're thinking Italian.
Where'd you guys go the other night? Gene & Georgetti's.
Eh, that's gonna take too long.
They're crowded now.
Yeah, valet took forever.
What? Maybe RJ worked valet at the Riverside Country Club.
Maybe.
Yeah, they subcontract their valet.
Yeah, this is Detective Hailey Upton with the Chicago Police Department.
I need to speak with management.
I'm looking for one of your employees Or former employees Robert Riggs.
Great, uh do you have an address? Or last known address? Yep, go ahead.
344 West Owens.
Thank you so much, yep.
Here we go, 344 West Owens.
Owned by Louise Wolfson.
There's a Cook County Death Certificate attached.
She died two months ago.
House is sitting there vacant.
Thanks, Trudy.
Jay, call me, I got a lead on RJ.
There's no lights on, and there's no car in the driveway, so I'd say no one's home.
Well that's perfect timing, then.
We do a little sneak and peek, those windows look easy to breach.
Hailey, we don't have enough for a warrant.
It's not like last time, there's no exigent circumstances.
Right.
Right, okay, so I'll go inside.
Confirm the jewels are inside.
I can say a CI's been in there.
We get a warrant, we catch a child killer.
Why do you want this so bad? RJ murdered a little kid.
And it's horrific, but Hailey I'm asking you what's going on with you? I'm just trying to do my job.
It's not that complicated.
I don't know if it's about the job, I think this is about Voight.
Voight's my boss, so I love Voight, but getting too close to him, it can be a problem.
And it usually doesn't end well.
Jay, I'm a cop.
Who wants to put a murderer in prison.
Nothing more.
Then we get a warrant and we do it the right way.
We don't have time for that.
We wait, he could kill somebody else.
I'm not letting you go in there alone.
Jay, you don't have to do this.
Jay.
We got this prick.
Come on, let's go.
- You good? - Yeah, I'm good.
5021 George, 10-1, 10-1.
Shots fired by offender at police.
Offender's fleeing westbound off Owens.
He's in a gray Audi, 24 Boy Adam 8 Zebra.
He's moving pretty quick now.
Squad, he's taking off on us.
5021 George, he's going left on the alley off Archer.
- Give me your keys, now.
- Whoa, whoa, whoa.
- Shut up, give me your keys.
- Drop your weapon.
- Back off, now.
- RJ, I will shoot you.
- Let her go, now.
- I said back off.
- Let them go.
- Back up, back up! Back up.
RJ, just take the car.
- You can let them go.
- Stop talking and back up.
Go on, get in the car.
Get in the car! No one needs to get hurt, RJ.
Go to hell.
It's okay, it's okay.
- My daughter, my daughter.
- It's okay, it's over now.
It's over.
5021 George, shots fired by the police.
Offender is down.
D.
O.
A.
You guys okay? - Yeah, Sarge.
- Yeah.
Mom and daughter? Uh, they're in shock but they're all right.
You did good, you saved two lives.
All right, what happened? How'd it go down? I got a lead on the house.
Called Jay.
We arrived at the residence, looked empty, so we got out of the car to get a closer look.
You go inside? No, we didn't have a warrant.
When we got out of the car, RJ pulled up.
We exchanged shots, he got back in his car, we gave chase, that's how we ended up here.
Office involved shooting in today's climate, eyes are gonna be all over this.
So, if there's anything else I need to know.
It was by the book, Sarge.
Okay.
All right, get some rest.
Jay.
You don't have to cover for me.
I didn't force you to go inside.
What was I going to do? I was gonna sit there? While you go inside by yourself? You jammed me up.
That's not okay.
Thank you.
Something up, Hailey? Yeah, scene's done being processed.
So I brought the pack for your signatures.
- Okay.
- Anything else? I'm good.
We got the son-of-a-bitch, we move on.
It's been a long day.
- Go home.
- Um Jay and I are together.
Maybe I should have said something earlier.
Maybe - it is affecting things.
- Hm.
I don't want to mess up the best job I've ever had.
This is the most steady thing I've had in my life the last four years.
This job is intense, and unpredictable.
That's what I love about it.
That's what makes me feel Safe? Yeah.
Is that crazy? Possibly, but that's what makes you good at your job.
Maybe, um Maybe what? Maybe I need a new partner.
You and Jay are a good team, I'm not splitting that up.
I'll see you tomorrow.
Yeah, all right.
Hailey.
Just just be careful.
I know you like to do things your own way.
What does that mean? Means I know you.
We need Jay just the way he is.
