1 [vacuum cleaner whirring.]
Uh, hey, Everett, th-that's not how you use - [yelps.]
- [grumbles.]
Traitor! - [whimpers.]
Uh - It was all a big misunderstanding.
- Norm is a good monster.
- I can explain.
Save your breath, monster man.
[inhales.]
Mama, let's just hear him out.
[muffled.]
Don't "mama" me.
[plays "Take Me Out to the Ball Game".]
Would a "good monster" lie to us, trick my sucker brother, make a dirty deal with our enemy? Oona was right.
It's better just to work alone.
You're making a mistake.
Out of my way.
[grunting.]
Come on You're not You're not going anywhere until you hear me out.
WREN: Out of my way, you big palooka.
Hmm.
NORM: [straining.]
Come-come on.
Wren, uh, listen, uh, please.
- Whoa! - Whoa! Oh.
I get it.
The Fun Room.
- [groans.]
Oh.
- NORM [over TV.]
: Knock, knock.
Yup, it's me, good old N Gotcha.
I'm not I'm surrounded by traitors.
Sorry, Wren.
It was the only way to make you listen.
WREN [mockingly.]
: It's only way to make you listen.
Fine.
Get it over with.
[sighs.]
One hundred years ago, I lived in the woods outside Auburn Hollow with my dad.
Why don't you try the next one, Norm? What's the matter with you? [sighs.]
Nothing.
I I want to go out for Halloween this year.
This again? No.
It's the safest day for monsters.
I wouldn't even need to wear my human suit.
Absolutely not.
Humans are too dangerous.
Especially if they find out what you are.
Besides, I need you to help me fill all these jars.
Who even cares about portal juice? Hmm? [gasps.]
- Where are we? - Earth.
You're on Earth.
My name's Ernie.
I'm a monster like you.
A-A monster? Uh, that's what humans call us.
Head to my workshop, just down that path.
Don't worry.
I'll make a human costume.
It'll help you blend right in.
You'll be safe, I promise.
NORM: Are they gonna be okay? ERNIE: Mm, once I make them human costumes, thanks to this.
You wanted to know who cares about portal juice.
They do.
WREN: So you and your pappy helped monsters sneak into town? Wow, I feel so much better.
Shall I continue? Just like you don't believe in good monsters, my dad didn't believe in good humans.
I was taught from an early age to avoid them.
And I did, for a while.
Hey, what's with all that racket? You're scaring away the fish.
Aah! Please don't hurt me.
I'm not gonna hurt you, kid.
My name's Oona.
Oh My dad he doesn't, um What? Like you talking to girls? He afraid you gonna charm them all? [laughs.]
I wouldn't worry about that.
No, it's just I'm Norm.
Tell you what, Norm.
Me and some friends are meeting up later to make our Halloween costumes.
You in? [gasps.]
That was how I met Oona and the others.
She was my first human friend.
Wait, the others? Were they? The original four costumed kids! As if I care.
Hmm.
Yes, the original four.
See, I-I'd never had friends before, and I wanted to impress them.
So I made a choice that changed my life forever.
[panting.]
I knew portal juice was special, but I had no idea how powerful it would be when combined with the kids' - imagina - Hey! Don't say it.
- Imag - Uh! - Im - Uh! Uh! - Imagination! - [bellows.]
[grunts, sighs.]
How come you can't do it, Norm? That's how I learned we monsters can't power up like you kids.
Over the next year, those four kids became my best friends.
[laughing.]
Especially me and Oona.
- [Norm growls.]
- [Oona giggles.]
[both laugh.]
But the next Halloween night, something terrible happened.
- Dad? - Norm, come on.
Get your things.
- We need to go.
- Why? The Repugnians are coming and once they get the town's nougat, they'll be unstoppable.
Wha We-we have to help the humans.
We can't.
I know some people who can.
ERNIE: Norman Lawrence Guy, you get back here! Where have you been? All the good candy's gonna be gone.
Monsters are coming.
Real monsters.
What are you talking about, Norm? They're coming for the nougat factory tonight.
You have to protect it.
The nougat makes them more powerful.
Use your costumes to stop them.
ERNIE: Norm! Norm, where are you? Go.
Now.
I'll meet you at the factory gates.
I'm scared.
You're a dragon, Oona.
Dragon's don't get scared.
I'll be there to help, I promise.
Norm, what are you doing? We have to go.
Dad, I'm staying.
I have friends here.
- They're humans.
- Humans? I used our portal juice on their Halloween costumes.
They can defend the town.
If the Repugnians see kids with magic costumes, they'll go straight to the shop.
They won't.
We'll beat them! - I've got to go.
- You're not going anywhere without your mask, young monster.
[gasps.]
Dad, please.
[grunts.]
Go to your room and get packed.
It's the only way.
- [alarm wailing.]
- [explosions.]
[yelling.]
[growling.]
- [yelling.]
- [whimpering.]
Where are you, Norm? [grunts.]
Huh? Hide.
Go! Now! [chittering.]
[low growling.]
Traitor! I don't want any trouble, guys.
- [groans.]
- [Norm gasps.]
You shouldn't have given costumes to those kids! [Norm whimpers quietly.]
No.
No! Huh? Little loose.
[growls, munches.]
Who's next? [excited chattering.]
[growling.]
Looks like we're having a sale, guys.
Everything must go! [cackling.]
Aah.
Ooh! Oh! Everything must go.
That includes you.
[gasps.]
[cackling, indistinct chatter.]
[groaning.]
- [grunts.]
- You'll never get in our way again! - No! - [Ernie grunting.]
- No! - [groaning.]
- No! - [yelling.]
I never saw him again.
[sniffles.]
And Oona? She and the others had to defend the factory without me.
But that wasn't the worst part.
[sniffling.]
- [rustling.]
- Huh? That chicken better have a good excuse.
- NORM: I do.
- [gasps.]
I I wanted to tell you, but - [whimpers.]
- [grunts.]
Traitor! You're one of them?! No.
It's not what you think.
I'm a good monster.
Would a good monster lie to his best friend - and leave us to fight alone? - Oona, I just Aah! I'm a monster hunter.
You're a monster.
Don't get in my way again.
I'm sorry.
I didn't tell you the truth because I was afraid.
Losing Oona nearly killed me.
If I lost you guys, I don't know what I'd [sniffles.]
Huh? [sniffling.]
Aah! Oh! I am not missing out on this sweet group-hug action.
[Norm laughs.]
[laughing.]
You know what stinks about all this? Reynold was right.
Speaking of where is he? Last I saw, face-down in a mud hole that I may have pushed him in.
After kicking him out of the group.
And calling him a coward.
And a sucker.
But I'm sure he's aces, right? I'll go get my coat.
WREN: I wish you weren't my brother! REYNOLD: I wish you weren't my sister! [Wren and Reynold grunting.]
I'm going off to save the world with Everett and Lucy.
Do us all a favor go home.
[whimpering.]
[sobbing.]
[whimpering.]
[sniffles.]
- [thump.]
- Huh? [thumping continues.]
[whimpering.]
[crow caws.]
[gasps.]
[whimpering.]
[thumping continues.]
You better leave me alone, Repugnian, or or I'll use this rock to power up into Rock Boy, half boy, half boulder.
[whimpers.]
Chest pass! [whoops.]
- [grunts.]
- [laughs.]
I know this is gonna sound nutty, but the only thing I'm gonna miss in this wretched world is basketball.
I picked it up last week.
Hit me.
I'm open.
[grunts, whimpers.]
[grunting.]
Ooh! Yeah, we don't have basketball in Repugnia.
I'm a natural.
[whoops.]
Oh, yeah.
Watch out.
Here comes trouble.
Ooh! I don't care what you do to me.
I'm not telling you anything.
I wouldn't expect you to, kid.
Come on, walk with me.
Look over there.
See all that smoke? I've got the factory working 'round the clock.
We take the nougat through the portal, we eat it, get all yoked, and boom! Make the universe cry for its mommy.
But nice try, kid.
You and your friends nice try.
Oh, check it out.
[panting.]
[laughs.]
[grunts.]
- [groans.]
- Like I said, nice try.
Come on, move it.
WOMAN [over P.
A.
.]
: Portal opens in two hours and 30 minutes.
Grubbins, get your rears in gear.
Time is nougat.
[scoffs.]
Yeah, why don't you get your rear in gear, Bobbo? Watch it, Ty.
Bob's still mad we got tricked by that little girl with glasses.
Is there a bathroom around here? As long as you don't mind company.
[Grubbins laugh.]
- [laughs.]
- I suggest you hold it in.
- Ooh, somebody's grumpy.
- Ugh.
Hold your tongues if you want to keep them.
[both gasp.]
She's just going through some stuff right now.
Whoa! - [grunts.]
- Stop talking to the enemy.
Give them a break, Oona.
They're prisoners, too.
Prisoners who dream darkly of becoming monsters again.
Hey, kids.
Today my first Tootz-torial.
How to get your face ripped to shreds and Staple it back together Like a freaky Frankenstein.
[crying.]
- BOB: Roody.
- Huh? What are you doing standing around? I put you in charge of chain gang B-72.
- Oh! - Yeah, sorry, boss.
Just missing my old face.
Think I could get a new one? [laughs.]
Why you filming another terrible movie? [whimpers.]
We're about to rule the universe.
Forget about your pretty boyish face.
[crying.]
Get a handle on your priorities, Roody.
Psst, Oona.
We need to get out of here.
And how do you propose we do that? For starters, we team up with the Grubbins.
I bet they hate Bob, too.
You guys hate Bob, right? Not as much as Bob hates us.
Mm-hmm.
I'd rather be boiled in molten nougat.
[scoffs.]
Like we'd work with you, you batty old witch.
Yeah, you Grubbinized us 100 years ago.
I did? Oh, well, I'm sorry.
Sorry you were so fun to Grubbinize.
How dare you! [all grunting.]
Hey, hey! No fighting.
Get back to work.
We've got nougat to move.
Get off of me, Grubbin scum.
Boy, press the button.
Aah, help! Hold on.
[all grunting.]
- [all groan.]
- Get in.
It's not worth it.
Do you know what happens when a Grubbin gets Grubbinized? You don't have a choice.
Okay, okay, you win.
Get down.
Now let's find a way out of here.
OONA: That cart will take us straight to the exit.
Ha! That thing's not going anywhere without the keys.
Good luck finding them.
Hey, now, we all want to escape, right? Forget them.
I can handle this.
Wh-Whoa! [laughs.]
Nice work, Johnson.
Keep it steady down there.
Come on, guys.
We're in this together, right? [laughs.]
Well done.
Ah, perfection.
[keys jangling.]
[Roody crying.]
[grunting.]
Doyle! Hey, Roody.
Doyle, tell me the truth.
Was I special? Did my fans really love me? Uh, sure.
Oh, thank you.
Thank you.
Wh-What the? Roody, help.
- Roody! - You monster.
I just meant to push him.
- Come on, let's go.
- Whoa! Okay, Grubbins.
Which key is it? Ha! Like we'd tell you.
You're scary, but you're not Bob scary.
- Care to wager? - Fellas, please.
Hey! Hey! Monsters! Guys, I've been attacked.
Me, Roody Tootz, attacked by - [clears throat.]
- [screams.]
Clam it, Roody.
We got this.
Guys, come on.
Which key is it? They're not even Bob, and I'm already too scared.
Forget them.
Here, hold off the monsters.
Aah! [snarling.]
[whimpering.]
Well, buddy, it was nice knowing you.
You've been a good friend.
[both crying.]
[grunts.]
I'm a Grubbin! What? Huh? Well, not technically.
What I mean is I know what it's like to be the little guy, to be pushed around by everyone, to be the last one picked for kickball.
Kickball? But I'm telling you, fellas, we little guys matter.
And when we work together, we can do big things.
[laughs.]
Yeah, like get squashed.
[roaring.]
[stammers.]
Got it.
Safety first, humans.
Come on, boys.
- Monsters, to me! - [monsters snarling.]
- Duck! - What's the plan? To get out of here.
[grunts.]
The tunnel.
That's our way out.
- [gasps.]
Bob.
- [monsters snarling.]
[Bob laughs.]
I've waited 100 years for this moment, but you know what they say: the last chunk of nougat is the sweetest.
Oh.
Aah! [tires squealing.]
[all exclaim.]
[Bob growls.]
[laughs.]
Traitors! - [whimpering.]
- [Bob laughs.]
Congratulations, Oona.
You couldn't save humanity, but you saved a couple of worthless Grubbins.
[monsters laugh.]
It's Abe Lincoln Jr.
! - [screams.]
- What? Huh? Roody? Roody? Save yourself, guys.
Get out of here.
[Bob grunts.]
We've got to save Roody.
There's no time.
Oona, please.
- Oh, Roody.
- Hey, hey, come on, man.
- I had such high hopes for you.
- [stammers.]
[Bob grunts.]
[Roody screams.]
Little did I know you'd turn into an ugly little traitor.
[scoffs.]
Want to know what happens when a Grubbin gets Grubbinized? REYNOLD: Hey, Bob.
Like you said, nice try.
- Huh? - Oh, no! [screams.]
Roody! Roody! Don't just stand there.
Get them! [monsters snarling.]
[stammers.]
Run! - Come on, come on.
- Come on, come on.
He's not gonna make it.
Nobody gets left behind.
Roody, take my hand.
[grunts.]
Roody! [snarling continuing.]
[panting.]
WREN: Okay, guys.
I say we split up.
Norm, you and Lucy look for Oona.
I'll go with Everett to find Reynold, - and then we'll - [horn honks.]
I think they found us.
Yes!
