Yeah, bring down the treble.
Drop wit me Me gonna tell the world my man is on fire tonight.
I'm still getting static through the monitor.
You hearing that, Erica? Yeah, I got it, too.
We'll sort it.
Oh, you sounding good, man! I'm feeling it, you know.
This is our time, Ajay.
Yeah, we're making our own destiny tonight.
- Right, Eri'? - Sure thing, T.
Baby, you are going to raise the roof like no-one else.
You know some of us are waiting over here? We still got five minutes.
Yeah, well, some of us need more practice than others.
Speak for yourself.
All yours, bro.
Kill it.
Jadesola, I'm going to stay and watch Deshawn.
Yeah, watch and learn.
Sinbad, are you ready? Yo, yo, everybody, haffi keep calm, come again Right now this is Deshawn Tell your friend, them Yo, upon the island where I perform Suddenly people will shout Trenton! Marlon.
Thank you.
What's going on? Victim is local reggae rapper, Infamous T.
Real name is Trenton Isaac.
Reggae rap? I've never heard of that.
Is it a thing? Is it a thing? Yeah, you know Is it a thing? It's It's definitely a thing, sir.
It's like a fusion of reggae.
And rap.
Yeah.
Sure.
Sounds fun.
Crime scene through there? I swear, the longer he stays on this island, the more English he gets.
Bullet wound is located right in the centre of the victim's forehead.
Clearly fired with pinpoint accuracy.
Only thing the victim appears to be carrying is his mobile phone.
Naomi.
I'll go through his call log and text messages back at the station.
Yeah.
All right, Marlon, talk us through what happened.
Trenton was watching from the side as another rapper called Deshawn was doing his sound check.
Deshawn said he saw a hooded figure, stood over here on the other side, carrying a gun.
Dark hooded top, black jogging bottoms, white sneakers.
Whoever it was then cut the lights, fired a single shot across the stage, killing our victim.
When the lights came back up, the shooter disappeared backstage.
The only way out is through a fire exit.
So, he was shot in the dark? This is the fuse box that the shooter used to kill the lights.
But why would they do that? I mean, firing in the dark makes it much harder to hit the target.
Yeah, and yet somehow the shot couldn't have been more accurate.
We should dust that fuse box for prints.
I found a bullet casing here, sir.
I bagged it already.
There's also this - a possible footprint belonging to the killer.
It's near the same spot where they stood, apparently.
I guess the sand must've come from one of these stage weights.
But that is a definite partial footprint.
We should get a cast of it.
Mm-hm.
Right, Marlon, let's have a look at this fire escape.
This way, sir.
We think this is where the killer entered the building as well? Well, the only other way in is round the front, but the security dude swears that nobody got in that way.
I'll do some door-to-door - see if anyone saw our assailant.
Hold on, this is one-way.
Sir? Well, look, you can only open this door from the inside.
See? We can't get back in now.
So how did the killer get inside? Unless someone opened it for them? You think they had an accomplice? - An inside man or woman? - Maybe.
Marlon, let's go talk to the witnesses.
Ah.
We'll We'll go round the front toto go in.
Sir, this is Trenton's fiancee, Jadesola Okoro.
Erica Williams, his backing singer, and his manager, Ajay Tucker.
And this is Deshawn Lyons, who was supposed to be performing tonight.
All right, Deshawn, you were the support act? Yeah.
And you were on stage when the gun was fired, is that right? Yeah.
I'd just started when .
.
I saw this person in the corner of my eye.
It was freaky, man.
They had this hood over their face and they were just standing there.
And then what happened? I tried to carry on, ignore them, but then I saw the gun.
They hit the lights, so I ducked down, hoping they'd miss me.
The lights came back up and that's when I saw Trenton lying there.
And where were the rest of you when this happened? We'd all headed backstage to chill before the show.
I was in the dressing room when I heard the shot.
Didn't know what had happened, so I came running up and found Deshawn with Trenton.
I was doing my make-up in the toilet.
I was in the green room, getting food.
So, you weren't together after Trenton's sound check? And did any of you go near the fire exit backstage? Or see anyone hanging around nearby? It's just that we believe someone backstage may have let the killer in.
And as you were the only people in the area at the time You think one of us helped Trenton get killed? For real?! That's crazy.
We all loved him.
None of us would do that! OK, thank you.
Marlon, let's do due diligence.
I want exclusion prints taken and search each of them, just in case.
Gotcha, sir.
We've got ourselves a witness, sir.
Yeah? A Mrs Florius from down the road was getting in from work when she saw someone in a dark hoodie being let in through that fire escape door.
Did she see who let them in? Afraid not.
It was dark inside.
Oh.
But she did see the killer.
And it was a female, mid-20s, light-skinned, serious look on her face.
Huh.
We should get Marlon to dust that door for prints as well.
You know, if her prints are on there, we could be close to cracking this already.
Can we get those prints uploaded first thing in the morning? See who was accessing that fire escape door.
Got you, sir.
That should give us the killer - or the accomplice.
Or, with a bit of luck, both.
Or none of them at all, sir.
So pessimistic, Naomi.
Darlene, what can I do for you? The financial check you asked me to do on your sister.
Oh, yeah.
It's come back.
And? And I have the address where she's staying.
Thanks for coming with me.
We should probably brace ourselves, Catherine, tread a bit carefully.
Do you think? Izzy's unpredictable at the best of times.
No telling what she's going to be like when she's pregnant and on the run from reality.
All right, Nev? Catherine.
Evening, Izzy.
You OK? Yeah, course.
You coming in? I've made some ginger and lemon balm tea if you fancy a cup? That would be lovely, Izzy.
Oh, it's so nice to see you, Catherine.
That was weird.
This is weird.
So, yeah, it's great here.
It's dirt cheap.
Beach just over there.
Shop's up the road.
I've really lucked out.
Oui, c'est parfait.
It's really been good for me, being here.
It's given me time to think about everything.
It must've been such a shock.
Yeah.
And I just panicked.
But I've sorted my head out now.
I really want to have this baby.
I want to be a mother.
Oh! That's wonderful news.
I'm so pleased for you.
Yeah, me too.
I'm made up.
Ha! Uncle Nev, eh? Thank you.
That means the world to me.
And you know what? Having a baby on this island, I can't think of anywhere more perfect.
Wait, what? I'm I'm going to stay here and have the baby - on Saint Marie.
Which means you're both down for baby-sitting duties, thank you very much.
But what about Mike - the father? What did he say? I don't know.
I haven't asked him yet.
I'm still working it out.
It's a very big decision, n'est ce pas? Izzy, this is crazy! You can't just decide to start a new life in the Caribbean.
You did.
Yeah, but I came out here for a job! And I don't have commitments back home.
Yeah, well, I'll get a job.
And Mike and I will sort something.
Look, it's what I want to do, so I'm doing it, so just shut your trap.
I'm serious.
It's not your call.
Would you like some more tea, Catherine? Thank you, Izzy.
So kind.
OK, then.
Marlon, ready for the inspector? Ready, Sarge.
I think we've lost him to the music.
I have never seen a man conduct reggae rap before.
Ha-ha! He's so English, bless him.
Inspector.
Inspector! Huh? We're ready for you.
Oh, sorry.
I was just dipping a toe into our victim's back catalogue.
He's incredibly dexterous, verbally speaking.
It's It's very impressive.
OK.
Postmortem confirms Trenton Isaac was killed instantly by the bullet to the head.
Ballistics say it was a 7.
65-calibre pistol, fired from a distance between three to five metres.
I've got us a floor plan of the venue.
And I measured the distance from where we know the shooter stood here Stage left.
.
.
to where we found the victim's body.
Stage right.
And it's about five metres.
So, even with the lights on, that is no mean feat.
Firing a bullet and hitting the victim bang on target.
But with the lights turned off I just don't see how you could guarantee that kind of accurate shot.
All right, let's start with what we do know.
The victim.
Local reggae rapper Trenton Isaac, otherwise known as Infamous T.
22 years of age.
Left school at 16.
Worked for a couple of the reggae clubs on the island as a DJ.
But he's had ambitions of being a reggae rap artist since his teens.
We know that a young woman in her twenties wearing a dark hoodie and black jogging bottoms is our killer, but we haven't yet been able to identify her.
Marlon managed to lift some fingerprints from the fuse box at the side of the stage and also from the fire exit door.
They're in the system now.
But we also know she had an accomplice who let her into the building and that accomplice must be one of these four people, who were all backstage around the time of the murder.
So, Trenton's fiancee is Jadesola Okoro.
She and Trenton met at one of his earlier gigs.
They got engaged six months ago and she works as a model.
Hm, you don't say.
Sorry, sorry.
What about Trenton's manager - Ajay Tucker? Turns out he and Trenton have been friends since school.
They grew up together and he's been managing T since his early days.
And the supporting artist - Deshawn Lyons? Still has a day job running the family fruit stall.
He's more of an up-and-coming artist on the island.
So that just leaves Erica Williams - the backing singer.
She's Ajay's step-sister, 19 years old.
Aspiring songwriter herself.
Mainly doing some busking around the island when Ajay suggested she join Trenton as a backing singer about a year ago.
Sounds like we've got a match on the fingerprints.
If one of these four was in cahoots with the killer, it means they were happy to facilitate the murder of Trenton Isaac.
Why? We've got a possible suspect, sir.
Matches the description the witness gave us yesterday.
Layla Carpenter.
Layla? You know her? I haven't seen her in a while, but, yeah.
We used to hustle the same patch back in the day.
- So, she's got form? - Sure.
But nothing like this, sir.
She's just like me - scraping a bit of money to get by.
She's not a killer.
I don't think.
She isn't answering my calls.
Thank you.
Sir, Mrs Florius has looked at the photo of Layla Carpenter I emailed over.
Says it's definitely the young woman she saw being let in through the fire escape door yesterday.
That settles it.
Layla must be our killer.
Can you two try and track her down? Check her home and anywhere else she might have been recently.
We're on it, sir.
I'll put out an all-ports warning, just in case.
Yeah.
If we can apprehend Layla Carpenter, then surely there'll be evidence of communication between her and whoever her accomplice was? Actually, sir, on that - I think I might have found a possible motive for the victim's fiancee, Jadesola Okoro.
I've been going through Trenton's mobile phone and it's clear he's been seeing someone else.
I've been checking his recent texts and there's been some, erm Erm How should I say? Er Fruity? Yes, sir, some very fruity texts exchanged between Trenton and a woman called Kiyana.
Been going on a couple of months.
And it's not just flirting.
They've obviously been meeting up at her place.
That IS fruity.
The thing is, sir, in the last couple of messages Trenton sent, it's clear Jadesola was on to him.
See? "J's not happy.
"We need to calm it.
She's going crazy at me.
" Look, it was nothing, OK? We'd moved on from it.
It doesn't sound like nothing.
"J's not happy.
"We need to calm it.
She's going crazy at me.
" How did you find out? Stupid gyal started posting photos of them together on social media for the whole island to see.
It was humiliating.
She knew exactly what she was doing.
And so you confronted Trenton? I was so angry.
Seeing him with her, all intimate and loved-up.
Doing that to me after he promised After he promised what? After he promised me it wouldn't happen again.
This wasn't the first time? Last summer, after we were just engaged, a friend of mine told me she'd seen him with someone else.
He swore it was a mistake, begged my forgiveness, and then not even a year passed and he's at it again.
So, he betrayed you twice in one year? That must have hurt a lot.
So much I wanted him dead? I'm still wearing this because I loved him like no-one else could.
I'm not your killer.
OK.
Thanks for your time.
While we're here, would it be all right to take a look through Trenton's personal belongings? Most of his stuff is at the studio.
It's at the back.
Thank you.
Got some USBs here, sir.
This one's got loads of song-tracks listed on it.
I'll take them all back to the station and work through them.
Good idea.
You know, I can't help but feel sorry for her, Jadesola.
Putting up with all Trenton was doing.
No man is worth that, if you ask me.
Yeah.
It blinkers people, you know, being in love.
You get so caught up in one person, you just block everything else out.
Oh, that's interesting.
Sir? This is Trenton's notebook.
It's full of lyrics and rhymes and ideas, but the last thing that was written in it was this - a name and number.
Who's Rich Murphy? No idea, but look at the date and time.
That's the same day and time Trenton was shot.
Yeah.
She's not here.
And her bike's gone.
She'll be laying low.
So, how well do you know this girl? I mean, is she a proper friend of yours? I mean, not at first.
When I first started hustling, Layla made it clear that I wasn't welcome.
But it didn't take her long to see that I didn't know what I was doing, so she took me under her wing, showed me the ropes.
She was good to me, you know? So, yeah, she was a proper friend.
Look, I don't know what's happened, but I know Layla, and she's just going to keep running and make things worse for herself.
It's her.
It's Layla.
Layla? Marlon, I didn't mean to kill Trenton.
I swear! That wasn't supposed to happen.
Then tell me what was.
It was a mistake.
I don't even understand how he can be dead.
If you come to the station, we can help you.
No.
No way.
I ain't doing that.
Layla, you need to just I said no, Marlon! You know I don't trust that lot.
But I'll meet with you.
Only you.
Coconut ice stand.
OK.
OK, thank you.
So, turns out Rich Murphy was an A&R rep for Jah Sounds.
I've heard of them.
Yeah, it's a British-Jamaican record label.
He flew in yesterday for the concert.
Landed at 4pm, which is why Trenton scribbled it down.
He sent a car to pick him up.
So, Trenton was obviously hoping this could be his big break.
Yes, but, although Mr Murphy said it was Trenton who made the arrangements, it was actually his supporting artiste that the record label was more interested in signing.
Sounds like there might've been a bit of competition, then, between Trenton and Deshawn.
That's exactly what I was thinking.
- Want me to look into it? - Please.
Inspector Parker.
DS Thomas.
Marlon has made contact with Layla Carpenter.
Really? She phoned me, sir.
She won't come to the station, but she's agreed to meet with me tomorrow morning.
You're going to have to arrest her, Marlon.
Just let me talk with her first.
Please, sir.
Apparently, she's saying that Trenton wasn't meant to die.
What? So, it was an accident? I don't know.
But I find it very hard to believe that Layla would just shoot somebody.
You think there's more going on? But if she sees it's more than just me there tomorrow, she's going to run.
I know it.
Please, sir.
Just let me hear what Layla has to say first.
All right.
Thank you.
Well, let's call it a day there, shall we? We'll pick this up tomorrow.
Hopefully Layla Carpenter can shed a bit more light on what happened when Trenton was shot.
You're alone? I told you I would be.
You said on the phone that Trenton wasn't supposed to die.
I was meant to just go in there and fire a blank.
It wasn't supposed to be real bullets.
What? It wasn't even my gun.
So, who gave you the gun? Trenton did.
I knew him a little.
Not well.
He bought a few bootleg CDs from me.
Then a couple of weeks ago, he asked if I'd be interested in doing a few jobs for him.
So, I went to his studio and he told me he wanted me to fire a blank gunshot during the sound check at a gig.
He said it would get him publicity and scare Deshawn.
Why would he want to scare Deshawn? He didn't want him to perform.
He thought that the gunshot would make him freak out and back out.
So, wait, itit was Trenton who left the fire exit door open throughout the gig? He said he was going to call the police to make sure that he looked innocent.
Told me not to worry cos no-one would ever find out it was me.
Layla, why would you agree to something like that? I don't know.
Cos he paid me.
I tried to back out, I tried to give him his gun back, but he convinced me that it was harmless.
And that's why you cut the lights - because it wasn't meant to be a real shot.
So how did Trenton ended up getting shot? That's what I told you, I don't understand.
He said there were blanks in the gun.
Why would he put real bullets in there, Marlon? Look, I know you don't want to, but you really need to come to the station with me and speak with my boss, Layla.
No way.
I know what happens to people like me, Marlon.
Like you used to be.
We get the blame.
Always.
Wait, Layla Layla! Trenton was the accomplice to his own murder? That makes no sense.
Layla said he told her the bullets were blanks and that he wanted her to fire the gun in the dark.
If Deshawn thought someone was trying to kill him, he wouldn't want to perform that night.
That would mean there was no chance of Deshawn getting any attention from the A&R rep.
Although Mr Murphy said it was Trenton who made the arrangements, it was actually his supporting artiste that the record label was more interested in signing.
It's a pretty extreme way to stop Deshawn from performing.
Sounds like Trenton also thought it would get him a bit of publicity.
If Trenton gave Layla a gun with blanks, how comes he got a bullet in his head? Well, maybe he made a mistake.
Didn't know what he was doing, mixed up the bullets.
Or someone else managed to switch the bullets.
Yeah, but the fact remains that Trenton was killed with a single bullet in the centre of his forehead.
I find it hard to believe that that was an accident.
At the same time, if someone switched in real bullets, Layla wasn't aiming to kill Trenton - and she fired in the dark.
How could anyone guarantee she'd kill him? This case is making less and less sense.
Naomi, did you dig up anything on Trenton and Deshawn's relationship? Sounds like Trenton was quite threatened by him.
Actually, sir, I think it was mutual.
There was a real rivalry between them.
Why do men always have to have such big egos? Not you, Marlon, honey.
Erm, I got in touch with a couple of Trenton and Deshawn's mutual friends I found on social media and they all said the same thing - on the surface, the two made out they were good mates.
And behind the scenes? Six months back, Deshawn was heading out for a gig when he found his car had been set on fire.
He always swore it was Trenton.
Apparently, he said if Trenton ever tried to mess with him again, he wouldn't be responsible for his actions.
Look, all right.
I admit.
T and me, we had some issues, some tensions.
Might not have been public, but it wasn't secret.
When did this start? About a year back.
I'd been gigging a while already, putting my material out on social media, never getting much traction.
But then I really found my voice, you know? Worked out what I wanted to say and how I wanted to say it.
And then you started getting some attention? And how did Trenton feel about that? It's a small scene we got here on the island - and he was always the one to watch.
Suddenly, there was another contender.
And how did that play out? Don't know what you mean.
Your car was set on fire.
We hear you believed it was Trenton that did it.
And that you said if he tried anything like that again, there'd be consequences.
So, what? You think I arranged for someone to come to MY sound check the other day and shoot him? No, actually.
We know it wasn't you that did that.
It was Trenton who arranged for someone to enter the venue with a gun.
Sorry, what? Well, the intention was for a blank to be fired.
Just to scare you.
To stop you from performing that evening.
Makes us wonder, you see, if you'd got wind of Trenton's plan, maybe you saw to it that it was Trenton that ended up with a real bullet in his head.
No.
No, no, no.
That is not what happened.
I knew nothing about this.
For real.
And what are you saying here? That I put real bullets in a gun that was aimed in my direction? Seriously? I was on that stage as well.
You need to work out what it is you're alleging happened here before you come and bother innocent people in public.
I've got a business to run here.
We need to find out whether there were real bullets or blanks in the gun Layla fired.
Until then, we're clutching at straws.
Mm-hm.
Marlon, did Layla say what she did with the gun? She legged it before I could ask, sir.
Marlon, you're going to have to bring her in.
She's a key witness in this case and possibly still even a suspect.
We can't keep playing games.
I understand, sir.
I'll I'll try and reach out to her again.
I am increasingly convinced that, in some way, it has to be one of these four who facilitated Trenton Isaac's killing.
Sir.
DS Thomas asked me to work through the memory sticks you retrieved from the victim's studio.
And it's all mostly music stuff.
Guide tracks, demo recordings, things like that.
But then, on this one, I found something rather, erm Hm! How should I say? Fruity? Fruity's exactly the word, DS Thomas.
They're photos of Erica Williams.
Taken by a boyfriend, I think.
Do we know who he is? It's obviously just a bit of fun the pair of them are having.
But it's the fact that these photos were in Trenton's possession that bothered me.
And then Marlon was sifting through the victim's emails and came across this one.
Sent by Erica a week ago.
Basically, she is pleading with Trenton to delete the images.
Sounds like he was using them as a hold over her.
Like he was blackmailing her or something.
I take it no-one else knows about this? It was just between me and Trenton.
The photos that Trenton had of you.
How did he get them? My boyfriend Ex-boyfriend - Lamarr.
He and Trenton were friends and I think Well, I know Lamarr showed them to him one night at a bar and, when he left his phone on the table, Trenton sent them to himself.
I'm sorry that happened to you, Erica.
From the email that you sent, it sounds like Trenton was threatening you.
Is that the case? People loved him.
His music.
Seeing him perform.
Butthere was a side he never showed to his fans.
He could be nasty, you know? Cruel.
So, what was he saying he'd do with the photos? Put them online.
Show them to my friends, family.
Did he want something in return? Oh, no.
No, it wasn't like that.
He liked toying with people.
Feeling like he was in control.
Did Ajay ever find out? No.
The truth is, now that Trenton's dead, it means those photos will never be seen.
No.
I I would never You can't think that I I told you - it was a game to him.
Just a sick game.
That's why I knew it wouldn't go any further.
I swear to you.
Is it just me, or are you getting the distinct impression that Trenton Isaac was a nasty piece of work? Very much, sir.
Hm.
Maybe I should get in contact with Erica's exLamarr.
If he and Trenton were friends, he may know if there are any other skeletons we should know about.
Yeah.
Good idea.
Hey, Catherine.
Neville? I just wondered how things were with Izzy today.
Oh, I haven't spoken to her yet.
I wasn't really sure what to do.
Thanks again for coming with me yesterday, though.
I really appreciate it.
It was veryinteresting.
Well, that is one way of describing it, yeah.
I know she seems to you like she's not being logical, but I think maybe she feels very alone right now.
I remember I did when I was first pregnant with Cammy.
When Izzy found out she was having a baby, she got on a plane and she came here - to see you, Neville.
She obviously needs a big brother, right now.
So, just go and be that for her.
Yeah.
Thanks, Catherine.
Ooh! Look at all this, Mr Swankypants.
Well, you know.
Thought I'd make a bit of an effort.
And as it's you, I'm making your favourite.
You haven't.
Sausage, mash and frozen peas.
Bangers and mash and that view.
Bloody love it.
Yeah, just take a seat, it won't be long.
And, don't forget - I want my mashed potato lumpy, please.
Of course.
This is Layla.
You know what to do.
You all right, hon'? Layla's still not answering the phone.
Have you left her a message? Only saying to call me.
But that was like four hours ago now.
You know, back when we was on the streets, the only people we could trust was each other.
And now all she sees isis this uniform.
Then you've got to make her see that you are still the same good friend.
This is Layla.
You know what to do.
Layla.
It's Marlon, erm That was amazing, Nev.
I feel like a beached whale.
Well, that's probably for the best - you're eating for two now.
Yeah.
ListenI'm sorry about last night.
I know you need me to be supportive, and I wasn't.
But I just want you to know that, whatever you decide to do, wherever you decide to raise this baby, I'm behind you.
110%.
You know it wasn't meant to be like this, don't you? How'd you mean? I was meant to be the cool one who ended up in a shack on a Caribbean beach, not you.
I was always the cool one.
I want what you have.
Don't you think that's a bit of a rose-tinted view, though? I mean, it gets quite lonely out here sometimes.
You've got friends out here.
People really like you, I can see that.
Yeah, sure, but it's not the same, is it, as having someone you love? Someone that loves you.
Like you and Mike.
You know, Mum hoped that you and that Florence girl you were talking about would end up together.
What happened there? She had to move away.
Not that it would've made any difference if she'd stayed.
No? Feelings weren't reciprocated.
I'm sorry.
Did you really like her? Well, I convinced myself that I didn't, butyeah.
Yeah, I fell hard.
Just like how I fell for Mike.
Yeah.
I'm so scared about having this baby, Nev.
I'm not sure I can do it.
Of course you can.
You totally can.
You You've just got to see it like an adventure.
Like when you just upped sticks and went travelling round South America for a year.
It's like you said - you're the cool one, you do the exciting stuff.
Treat this like your next big adventure.
I could do that.
I can do an adventure.
I'm good at adventures! Yeah.
Hm.
If I do this, they're going to arrest me, aren't they? Inspector Parker, he's a real good guy.
And he knows there's more to this than meets the eye.
But we can only get to the bottom of it with your help.
At the moment, we have no idea if you are being set up.
If someone put real bullets in the gun, or something else happened when you fired it, you need to tell us where that gun is so that we can check the bullets inside it.
I ditched it.
That was always the plan.
What Trenton told me to do.
Where? Where did you ditch it? I threw it in the sea, out at Chamereaux Beach.
Marlon, I want you to take Layla back there and get her to tell you exactly where she threw it.
Right? Sir.
Darlene, can you get on to the local dive team, see if they can spare a couple of bodies over at Chamereaux Beach? I'm on it right now, Inspector.
Thanks.
Sir, I've got something.
I was just speaking with Erica Williams' ex, Lamarr.
He said Ajay Tucker, her step-brother, did find out about Trenton and the photos.
And he wasn't too happy about it? Was furious.
The thing is, sir, Ajay only found out the morning of the concert.
Confronted Trenton about it.
Ajay was literally heard saying I'll kill you for this! .
.
and had to be pulled off him.
Lamarr saw the whole thing.
You know, I've been living like this for three years now.
Friends from school, they're all getting mortgages.
Me? I can barely afford gas for my generator.
I've worked night and day, getting him gigs.
Doing his social media, branding, radio appearances.
I've paid for his demos, music equipment, venue hire.
And for what? A pittance.
I've got nothing.
And then Trenton goes and repays you by threatening your step-sister.
He was always cocky, you know? Arrogant.
Selfish.
I thought that's how you have to be if you want to make it, but He got worse? The last year or so.
No-one came to sign him after all this time.
And he started to realise that it just wasn't going to happen for him.
So, he got bitter.
Resentful.
He took it out on the rest of us.
He lashed out.
Mr Tucker, you were heard saying you wanted to kill Trenton.
Yeah.
I said that.
And I meant it.
But I didn't do it.
So, what happened after you and Trenton had your altercation? I calmed myself down.
I realised that if I wanted to get those photos deleted, I would have to act all apologetic, you know? And that's why you were at the sound check? Oh, you're sounding good, man.
I'm feeling it, you know.
I thought I just needed to get through one last gig and that's it, we're done, finished.
He can find himself another manager.
Cos I knew Erica would have the last laugh.
She has real interest in her.
She is a good songwriter.
Singer.
People want to sign HER.
- I should take this.
- Yeah.
So, it was just coincidence, then? That the same day you find out Trenton took advantage of your step-sister, AND you said you wanted to kill him, someone goes and shoots him? Look, if you find who killed Trenton, let me shake them by the hand.
Sir, that was Marlon.
They found the gun.
Green caps on all of them.
They're all blanks.
Yeah.
Which leaves us with a bit of a conundrum.
We've got a gun that didn't fire a real bullet, but a real bullet that killed Trenton Isaac and not the gun that fired it.
How can it be that we've found the shooter, the accomplice and the gun, but not the killer? Maybe someone fired a different gun at the same time? But I searched the suspects, sir.
None of them had a weapon on them.
And it still won't explain how they managed to aim and hit the target when the lights were off.
Right.
Since we're all in the dark, metaphorically speaking, we might as well go and plunge ourselves into literal darkness.
Come on.
So what are you thinking here, sir? Well, since we've hit a brick wall, I thought we might return to the place where it all started.
And we're in the dark because? I wanted to know exactly what the killer could see.
And the answer is .
.
absolutely nothing.
Could you get the lights, please, Marlon? All four suspects had motive, but none of them had means or opportunity.
I'm fine.
Continue.
So, where do we go from here, Inspector? I don't know.
I really do not know.
Well, isn't that a thing? The bullet wound is located right in the centre of the victim's forehead.
Clearly fired with pinpoint accuracy.
The only thing the victim appears to be carrying is his mobile phone.
Well, I'll be jiggered.
Jiggered? That is it.
That is actually it! So, he was shot in the dark? We'd all headed backstage to chill before the show.
I was in the dressing room when I heard the shot.
I was doing my make-up in the toilet.
I was in the green room.
What are you saying here? That I put real bullets in a gun that was aimed in my direction? Seriously? Maybe someone fired a different gun at the same time? But I searched the suspects, sir.
None of them had a weapon on them.
And he told me he wanted me to fire a blank gunshot during the sound check at a gig.
There's also this - a possible footprint belonging to the killer.
You've got it, sir? Yeah, I think I have.
I-I mean, I know exactly how Trenton was shot in pitch-black darkness, but I don't know who did it yet, but I reckon I can work that out.
Marlon.
Yes, sir? We're going to need the cast you took of that footprint.
I'll head to the station.
Darlene, could you check the pictures on the whiteboard and make sure all the suspects are wearing the same shoes they had on on the day of the killing? OK, Inspector.
Sir, just so I know - being jiggered, that's a good thing, right? In this instance, it most certainly is.
The footprint that we recovered, I now know for definite that that belongs to the killer.
Not because they stood here in the small patch of sand and fired the gun, which is what we originally suspected, but we were wrong.
Because the only person who was in that area at the time of the murder was Layla Carpenter.
And, yes, although she was seen firing a gun, we know that that gun only contained blanks.
So it was impossible for her to have fired the fatal bullet that killed Trenton Isaac.
Plus, it's not even Layla's footprint.
And yet, I still know that this footprint belongs to the killer.
Why? Not because they stood here while they pulled the trigger, but because they stood here while they disposed of the gun.
The other gun - the one that contained real bullets.
The one that killed Infamous T.
Sir, we have a match.
It's here.
Of course.
So, Trenton was obviously hoping this could be his big break.
Cos I knew Erica would have the last laugh.
Sounds like there might have been a bit of competition, then, between Trenton and Deshawn.
And now we know which one of you it was that did it.
Let's start with what we already know.
Trenton Isaac hired Layla to fire a blank bullet at the gig to frighten Deshawn, stop him from performing, and everything was going according to plan.
Trenton opened the fire exit to let Layla in.
She entered the building, approached the stage, cut the lights and fired the blank shot.
Which is where we get to the part of this case that's been bugging me right from the start.
How was the killer able to make such an accurate shot in pitch darkness? The only thing we found on Trenton's body at the crime scene here was his mobile phone.
Which, of course, lights up when you touch the screen.
Layla told Marlon that Trenton wanted to be the one to call the police so he would look innocent.
He said he wanted to call the police himself to make sure that he looked innocent.
Now, just suppose, just for a second, that the killer somehow heard about Trenton's plan in advance.
That would mean that they knew that when Trenton pulled the phone out of his pocket and held it up to dial the number, they would be able to use the light from the phone screen to make that accurate shot.
So, the question now is, did anyone know about Trenton's plan in advance? Layla, you told us that Trenton first outlined his scheme when you visited him at his studio.
I went to his studio and he told me he wanted me to fire a blank gunshot during the sound check at a gig.
Now I need you to think very carefully - did you see anyone else there that day? Yeah.
She was there.
But Trenton sent her out when I got there.
Well, Erica, that makes sense, because that is your footprint.
Which, in turn, means that it was you that killed Trenton Isaac.
My guess is that when Layla was there at the studio that day, you overheard Trenton outlining his plan to her.
And then, once you knew Layla's part in it, you then went out and got hold of a second identical gun and a silencer and hid it on you when you came here to the gig.
After Trenton's sound check, you, Jadesola and Ajay all headed off backstage.
You claimed you were in the bathroom doing your make-up.
But you came back, didn't you? You snuck back here and you hid somewhere on this side of the stage.
There's plenty of drapes and speakers and it wouldn't be difficult to hide yourself from view.
So that, when Layla arrived, got into position, cut the lights and fired the blank shot, and Trenton took out his phone to dial the police, you were able to appear from here.
Making sure that you were about the same distance from him as Layla was on the other side of the stage, you were able to use the light from the screen on his phone to raise your gun and make that shot.
In the few moments before the lights came back up, it would have been easy enough to hide yourself back there.
And you knew that everyone would rush to the stage when they heard the gunshot.
Trenton! So, it was just a matter of waiting behind there and then appearing behind them as if you'd come from backstage.
In the confusion and panic, nobody noticed when you picked up the casing from the bullet you fired, and then Trenton's phone.
So now you had two tasks to perform.
First of all, you had to replace Trenton's phone, and secondly you had to dispose of the murder weapon and the casing from the bullet you'd fired.
Well, we know Officer Pryce here cleared the crime scene.
But there were just a few moments when he had to be outside talking to the security guard.
That must have been when you snuck back in here and replaced Trenton's mobile, only for me to find it soon after.
You can't prove any of this.
Well, that actually brings us full circle.
Back to the footprint.
See, when we first saw this pile of sand here, we just assumed it had fallen from one of the stage weights.
You know, maybe a Maybe a bag had torn or something.
But now, we know that the sand spilled because you lowered this one .
.
opened it .
.
and disposed .
.
of these inside it.
These will be covered in your prints.
So, yes, I can prove it.
But why would you do that, Eri? Because Trenton was blackmailing her.
Threatening to release intimate photos of her.
We know you wouldn't have wanted that.
Of course.
Who would? But what we didn't understand was quite how much was at stake for you.
When the A&R man, Rich Murphy, told us that his record company was actually more interested in signing Trenton's supporting artiste, we assumed he meant Deshawn here.
Although Mr Murphy said it was Trenton who made the arrangements, it was actually his supporting artiste that the record label was more interested in signing.
But he wasn't, was he? Ajay told us that you were about to sign your own record deal.
Cos I knew Erica would have the last laugh.
She has real interest in her.
It was you that Rich Murphy was coming to see, wasn't it? Because it was all about to happen for you.
Because success was knocking on your door.
But you just had one major problem.
Trenton Isaac.
He was going to ruin everything, and he had to be stopped.
He knew I was about to move on.
Stop being his backing singer.
Make it on my own.
And he couldn't stand it.
Me leaving him to make a go of it.
Do what he could never achieve.
He said he would show the world those photos if I signed that contract! I wasn't about to let him ruin my life.
And he deserved it.
He deserved everything he got.
Marlon, make the arrest, please.
Ajay! Doesn't feel much like justice, does it, sir? No.
Not this time.
Marlon, I'll take it from here.
I just wanted to say thank you.
Well, you know, you looked after me a few years back.
I'm just glad I got the chance to return the favour.
I never thought I'd say this, but you did the right thing, you know - getting out of it all, making something of yourself.
Good on you.
See you around.
Erica, there is no getting away from what you did.
But I want you to know that when this goes to trial, the judge will take everything into consideration.
The circumstances of what you did.
How Trenton was victimising you.
It was still murder, though, wasn't it? Yes.
But you're 19.
You're young, you're talented.
You deserve a second chance in life, and you will get one.
Nev? Izzy! Merci.
I called Mike.
I told him I was sorry for upping sticks and coming here.
That, yes, I would marry him, if he wanted me.
And I want us to have the baby together.
Right, what did he say? The daft bugger's never been so happy.
Oh! Thanks for looking after me, Nev.
Oh, no worries.
I better go.
I'm already running late.
No change there.
If you want what I've got, then go and get it.
There's someone's just waiting for you out there, I know it, but you've got to get off your backside and find her.
All right? Right.
Bye, Nev.
See you.
Safe flight, Izzy.
Commissioner.
Officer Pryce.
Sorry to disturb your evening, sir.
Your secretary said you might be here.
I just wondered if you had a quick moment.
Yeah.
I try and get down here every now and then.
It's good to check in with the people we've chosen to serve.
And this harbour, it's like the beating heart of the island.
You know, the trust put in us as police officers, it should never be taken for granted.
No, sir.
It's funny you say that, cos that's kind of why I'm here.
You're not handing in your resignation, I hope.
No.
No, sir.
No.
No, no, no.
Erm, sort of the opposite, actually.
It's, erm It's nearly been two years since I started this job as a trainee, and now I'm a full-blown officer.
And, well, I never said it to you before, sir, but thank you.
You gave me a chance.
Not that I appreciated it at the time, sir.
Butyou changed my life.
So, yeah.
Thank you.
No-one is more pleased than me that it's worked out for you, Marlon.
Or more proud of the fine young police officer you're turning into.
So, just keep at it.
The victim is Julius Rotfeld, the chess player.
We believe he was poisoned, sir.
I've never known anything like this.
I would never do such a thing! We're a very obsessive sort, us chess players.
You're thinking of dating?! I've written the profile and that's fine, but it's It's these photos.
Oh, Lord, have mercy.
Maggie Harper.
UK Press.
Maggie Harper is here on the island? I'm afraid she is.
You two know each other? It's been a while.
You're lying to my officers behind my back.
I am sorry.
I deserve the truth.
Damn it!
