Episodio 4

1 [music from news channel] MAY 24, 1993 Dismay and grief in all of Mexico over the murder of Cardinal Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo, archbishop of Guadalajara.
He died during a gunfight at the international airport of Guadalajara.
Seven people are dead.
These are the details from this afternoon.
All of a sudden, we all threw ourselves to the floor because of the heavy shooting.
Bullets were coming from everywhere.
[journalist] Were they waiting for someone? I think so.
Well, everybody was there, running among all those bullets and in the stairs.
- I was in the stairs.
- [telephone ringing] [man] I saw some norteños wearing hats and checkered shirts shooting the white car up.
- The cardinal was inside.
- Did you kill him? I feel the warmth from my boiling blood I feel the fear, sweat dripping away There's a stillness that nothing transmits I'm a breeze that grows stronger Even when the clouds drift away Even when my skin dries away I'll be back someday To unleash my return I have the dust that protects the road I have the branches of a leafless tree I'm the guardian of the tired night There are silhouettes that come to meet me Even when the clouds drift away Even when my skin dries away I'll be back someday To unleash my return THREE DAYS EARLIER [commentator] Who's coming? Hugo! The Grandfather! Goal! [shouting] Goal! Goal! [commentator] Goal! We're in the World Cup! Goal! - [Joaquín] How's it going? - [boy] We won! What? It's over already? Yes, Dad.
We really wanted to be with you.
I also wanted to watch the match with you, son, but it was impossible.
[Joaquín] Next time, I'll take you to the stadium.
Let me speak to your mother.
[commentator] Hugo touches the ball - Honey, will you come? - [Joaquín] I can't.
Things are quite messy now.
Besides, this week is Graciela and Moreno's turn.
- When will all this finish? - If it was up to me, I'd finish this up today.
[Joaquín] Are you cutting me out of the deal? What did you expect? The government is on my ass for the mess you caused in Vallarta.
What about our codes? You don't care? Güero deserved to be avenged.
I don't owe you an explanation.
Be thankful that I'm still willing to meet you and tell it to your face.
Let me keep working.
I'll hide out until you say the word.
Feed that bullshit to someone else.
You and the Avendaños couldn't care less about the deal.
But you're only leaving me out.
I only want to keep working in peace, Amado.
If the Avendaños stay calm, I'll stay calm.
- No more problems.
- There'd better not be.
The first one to shoot will be the first one to die.
And I don't give a damn if it's you or those assholes.
- So then? - Then Stay out for a month.
Find another woman, have more children.
Stay out of the business for one month.
Deal? [Güero] What happened? Did he believe you'll stay out? If not, I'd be out of the organization already.
Well, as Ismael always says, we have to keep low profile.
Right now, we have to do as Amado says.
But we'll take revenge against the Avendaños.
They owe us, and with interest.
Do not let your guard down with Amado.
As soon as he can, he'll get rid of you.
He knows now you're not afraid of him.
[moaning] Are you staying tonight? [moaning] [laughs] [Graciela] Where are we going? It's a surprise.
[car starting] [Graciela] What are we celebrating? Fix this here, look.
Well, this hotel is mine.
- What? - Really? Congratulations! [laughing] What's that over there, Dad? Ask Toño to show you the hotel, come on.
- When did this happen? - Lora! [chair scrapes] - Graciela.
- Good afternoon.
Let me introduce you to Mr.
Lora.
He helped me purchase this hotel.
- Graciela, nice to meet you.
- The pleasure is mine, madam.
[Joaquín] You can order whatever you want, honey.
- Excuse me.
- All right.
Go ahead.
[Lora] Everything is set to buy the banana plantations in Guatemala, sir.
Here are the documents, if you want to have a look.
We just need the signature of the frontman.
Find me more investment opportunities here, Lora.
I want to make this city mine.
- [knocking] - Boss.
The Director of the Judicial Police is waiting for you.
"EL CHINO" JUDICIAL POLICE DIRECTOR - Welcome.
- What's up.
Bring me a bean stew and some cheese.
Right away, Mr.
Joaquín.
Seems like you're a regular, huh? I'm the owner.
Why are you here? There's a good opportunity for you to meet the Deputy Attorney General.
You can meet him on the 24th in Puerto Vallarta.
No.
Things are too hot right now.
If he wants to meet up, he can stay here.
Listen, it's either that or nothing.
He's not a flexible man.
Besides, he's very interested in meeting you.
[waiter] This way, please.
Isn't that the cardinal who's friends with the Avendaños? Yes, he's a close friend of their mother.
I don't know who the other one is.
How much do you want for the introduction in Vallarta? One million and I'll take care of everything.
I'll give you first-class airfare, and I can include a girl for you.
[laughing] Cheers.
MAY 24, 1993 [alarm clock ringing] [shuts off alarm clock] GUADALAJARA INTERNATIONAL AIRPOR I'll get the bags.
[Toño] Stay alert! [car accelerating] - [man] Boss! - [gunshots] [Toño] Get down, boss! [gunshots and screaming] THREE DAYS EARLIER [commentator] Who's coming? Hugo! The Grandfather! - [commentator] Goal! - Goal! [commentator] The Grandfather! TIJUANA, MEXICO INTERNATIONAL CHECK POINT USA/MEXICO - [car engine running] - [commentator keeps talking] IDs, please.
- Hello.
- Why are you coming to Mexico? To attend a friend's funeral.
Go on.
Thank you.
IDs.
Why are you coming to Mexico? To attend a friend's funeral.
Go on.
[Ramón] He's known as El Chapo.
He's well protected in Guadalajara.
It's not easy to find him.
GUADALAJARA, MEXICO WAREHOUSE That's those bastards there.
What's up? How much? Every two or three days he'll move to a different house.
He officially has two homes in Guadalajara, one for each of his wives.
Separate.
ALEJANDRA'S HOUSE [ball bouncing] [hitman] There's no movement, only his son is here.
GRACIELA'S HOUSE [dialing] We're near the house of one of his wives but no signs of him.
There must be something he doesn't change.
Maybe a place he always goes.
- Some kind of routine.
- The cars.
He doesn't change that.
He often drives a big old car.
A white Grand Marquis.
Look, look, a Marquis! There he is! There he is.
Go, go! He's driving on Fifth Avenue.
He's driving south through Juárez.
Follow him.
[honking] [hitman] Hey Cougar, we're almost up to where you're at.
I can see you.
We're behind you.
Spanky here, also taking off.
[Ramón] Whoever kills him gets paid double.
[hitman] I'm going to catch up to him.
No, no, wait, wait.
Keep your distance.
There's something weird with this guy.
He has no bodyguards.
Let's see where he's heading to.
[Benjamín] As you wish, Amado.
Yes, we won't cause you any trouble.
Amado cut a deal with Chapo to keep things quiet for now.
We can't kill him.
Well, it'll have to wait.
[hitman] Are you ready? It's not him! It's not him! Floor it! Let's go! [Ramón] Go.
We have to find Chapo? [hitman] No, boss.
It wasn't Chapo's car.
[music playing] [sighs] - What's up, Benjamín? - Chino, come in.
- Ramón.
- Chino.
[Benjamín] Well, Chino.
Speak.
Why the rush to speak to us? I have information that's worth gold, gentlemen.
About what and how much? Information on Chapo Guzmán.
Five million dollars.
If you're asking for that much, Chino, you'll have to give us his exact location.
Well, I have the exact date, place, and time.
We'll take you the money to the same place as always.
Now, spill the beans.
Chapo will be at the airport on the 24th.
He's travelling to Puerto Vallarta on the 5 p.
m.
flight.
Why are you so sure? I bought his ticket myself.
What do you get out of it? The war between you guys is making the government nervous.
So, dead dogs don't bite.
MAY 24, 1993 [unzipping] [hitman] Come on, guys! It's time to do what we know best.
We didn't come all the way from San Diego to look like idiots.
We know who our target is.
Let's toast to that! - Logan Heights! - [everybody] Logan Heights! [Benjamín] No, no, no.
I don't give a damn about that.
We agreed you would stay here, you idiot.
I won't miss the chance to kill Chapo.
Ramón, Amado will kill us.
Listen, things are screwed up.
You cannot expose yourself! Once Chapo is dead, Amado will thank us.
[phone clicks] [truck approaching] [airplane engines droning] [Ramón] Let's go.
- [man] Boss! - [gunshots] [Toño] Get down, boss! [bystanders screaming] [screaming] [distant siren wailing] Police.
I'm on this flight.
Excuse me.
[pilot] Welcome aboard, ladies and gentlemen.
We are preparing for take-off.
Approximate flight time is two hours and ten minutes.
On behalf of the crew, thank you for your preference [clears throat] [sighs] THREE DAYS EARLIER [commentator] Who's coming? Hugo! The Grandfather! [commentator] Goal! - Who was it? - The Grandfather Cruz.
That's amazing! [Cardinal Ocampo] Before anything, I want to thank you all for coming today despite the football match.
[congregation laughing] It's nice to see Mexico win a football match although I would like to see it win in so many other spheres winning against drug trafficking, against the mafia, against corruption.
Some people say that the church's pulpit is not the place to speak about this.
But I believe that if you see evil and choose to remain silent, you're being an accomplice of that evil that eats away our society, the evil that enters our homes and hurts our children the evil called drug trafficking.
But drug traffickers do not act alone.
The government, with its endless corruption is an accomplice of this cancer that is consuming us.
[stops recording] Let's not remain silent, brothers and sisters.
Let's not be afraid.
Let's face this evil.
Let's denounce all who are corrupt, the criminals.
Let's not let them destroy us.
- Good evening, sister.
- Good evening.
- Well, anything else? - Yes.
Monsignor Prigione's date of arrival is set.
He arrives on the 24th.
You were keeping the most important thing to the very end.
It's been years since I last saw him.
Thank you, Ramira.
Any news from Chiapas? [taking out a note] "Gold Tower Hotel Tomorrow, 8:00 p.
m.
Francisco.
" And I just remembered the Gospel according to Matthew where He says: "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake.
Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you.
I am with you always.
" [Ocampo] We have to be united, today more than ever.
For our beloved country.
For our beloved families.
Good evening, Martín.
Thank you.
[hitman] No, no, wait, wait.
Keep your distance.
There's something weird with this guy.
He has no bodyguards.
Thank you, Martín.
- Pick me up at around - [hitman] It's not him.
It's not him.
Floor it! We have to find Chapo.
[restaurant chatter] [Joaquín] Isn't that the cardinal who's friends with the Avendaños? - Francisco! - Cardinal.
It's so nice to see you! Do you want some wine? Sure, thanks.
Can I offer you some wine, sir? Yes, please, bring me a Merlot.
The bishop in Chiapas is so grateful to you.
There's nothing to be grateful for.
The priests in El Salvador stick their necks out every day.
Hey, the lamb here is delicious.
Well, it's evident that you're not a vegetarian.
Bring us the lamb, please.
I've heard that Monsignor Prigione is coming? Yes.
I'll pick him up at the airport myself.
Cheers.
With your support to the movement and your preaching at the church, the government will soon declare you persona non grata.
That would mean that I'm doing my job right.
- Cheers.
- Cheers.
MAY 24, 1993 [footsteps] We're going for Monsignor Prigione.
[car approaching] [Ocampo] Ah, I hope Prigione won't take long.
Don't worry.
I'll wait here.
[man shouting] Boss! [gunshots] [shouts] [bystanders screaming] [screaming] [Toño] Get down, boss! [car alarm wailing] [sirens wailing] [kicking door] [distant sirens wailing] [airplane engine droning] [footsteps and grunting] Stop! Stop! Son of a bitch! [car passing by] - Over there, over there.
- [car approaching] - [car stopping] - [Joaquín] Stop! - [Joaquín] Take him out! - [Toño] Get out, son of a bitch! - [Toño] Come on! - Let's go, Toño, come on! - Who the fuck did they kill? - I don't know, boss.
But that was a double set-up.
I thought the norteños were coming after you.
Fucking, Toño, I'm building you an altar! You'd better build a tomb for Chino first.
He was the one who handed you over to Ramón.
Dismay and grief in all of Mexico over the murder of Cardinal Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo, archbishop of Guadalajara.
He died during a gunfight at the international airport of Guadalajara.
Seven people are dead.
These are the details from this afternoon.

- [telephone ringing] I saw some norteños wearing hats and checkered shirts shooting the white car up.
- The cardinal was inside.
- Did you kill him? No, Chapo escaped.
And what about Ramón? He escaped too.
Well, damn, Chino.
Am I paying you all that money for you to just tell me this? Listen, I don't know what went wrong.
Everything was perfectly squared.
What do you want to do, Amado? Wait for my orders.
Somehow we have to solve all this mess.
[closing cell phone] [hanging up telephone] [Toño] Which one? [Joaquín] There it is.
[Joaquín] Come on! Let's go! Thanks for the car, Commander.
You're in a serious mess, Chapo.
I can only hide you for a couple of hours.
Who'd they kill? [journalist] Cardinal Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo was murdered.
The strongest theory is that groups of drug traffickers were involved in this tragedy.
The President of the Republic will appoint a special group That's all bullshit! to give us the latest details from this afternoon.
[Amado] What did you do, Chapo? I didn't do anything.
I only know that Chino sold me out to the Avendaños.
But I don't know who killed the cardinal.
Someone wanted to kill us both.
Now you're really in deep shit.
That's why I'm calling.
I want to reach an agreement to get out of this.
[sighs] Are you in your hotel? Chapo? [hanging up the phone] What happened? How does he know about my hotel? Only three people knew.
Graciela, Lora and Chino.
Amado was the one that set the trap for me.
Get ready, we're going out.
- Where to? - To El Salvador.
I have to receive a five-ton shipment.
We can use that until things calm down.
This is a real mess, Amado.
There're witnesses saying the norteños killed the cardinal.
[sighs] But he is dead, just as you wanted.
It was supposed to be a double murder, El Chapo and the cardinal, and the murderers were supposed to be the Avendaños.
That Chapo is alive only affects my part of the plan.
Hmm.
Let's stick with the original plan, General.
Let's tell the press that the cardinal was killed in the crossfire.
No one will believe that.
There are witnesses who saw how he was shot to death.
Don't worry.
What matters here is to add to the confusion and finding someone to blame.
Who is more dangerous right now, the Avendaños or El Chapo? [sighs] El Chapo.
Then, let's blame Chapo.
[Conrado] Exactly.
Let's arrest him.
That way we solve the problem and we become heroes.
And you can get rid of him once and for all.
- [car approaching] - [Amado] Chino.
get a hold of the Avendaños.
Get them out of the game.
Commander.
Son of a bitch! You wanted to get two bodies on us! Stop it, Ramón! Let him go.
[scoffs] If you want to get out of this mess, you'll have to show me some respect.
Who killed the cardinal, Chino? That's none of your business.
Now, your only problem is how to get out of this.
This is all your fault! It's you who should get us out of this! Ten million and you're out.
You're a fucking thief.
And who will guarantee me that this time is for real? Amado.
He authorized me to make you an offer.
So this is all Amado's doing? Now he has a different plan, nothing to do with you.
That's the offer, gentlemen.
Are you in or not? Deal.
I need to carry out some searches of some of your properties.
And I need to arrest at least two or three men.
[Benjamín] You'll have all that.
[Alejandra] Are you okay? [Joaquín] Yes, but I'll have to disappear for a while.
How long? Until things calm down a bit.
Tell that brat that I love him.
[news plays indistinctly on TV] Joaquín, things will not calm down soon.
[reporter] Nobody is above the law.
[Joaquín] I'll call you back.
He's suspected of having murdered Cardinal Juan Jesús Posadas Ocampo.
His name is Joaquín Guzmán Loera, aka "El Chapo.
" Guzmán Loera has been classified by the Mexican government as one of the most dangerous drug traffickers in the country, and is now offering a five-million peso reward for any information that leads to his capture.
