Part 7

1 [HELICOPTER ROTORS WHIRRING FAINTLY] [BRUSH RUSTLING] [PANTING] [HELICOPTER ROTORS WHIRRING FAINTLY] Yo.
I'm stuck.
[GRUNTS] Fuck.
Fuck.
Okay.
[HELICOPTER ROTORS WHIRRING] [BOTH GRUNT] Come on.
Quick.
[SWEAT] Come on.
Come on! Leave the fucking shoe! [SWEAT] Come on, come on.
Come on.
Fucking go! - [HELICOPTER ROTORS WHIRRING] - [SWEAT] Come on.
[BREATHING HEAVILY] That fucking bitch.
[PANTING] Uneasy music [INDISTINCT CHATTER] - Hey, Chuck.
- Hey, Governor.
I bet you wish you stayed in aviation.
All we had to worry about then was flying into hurricanes.
- Yes, sir.
- How the hell did this happen? - Honestly, we don't know.
- Where's the superintendent? - Want to talk to him? - That'd be nice.
Get me Catherine.
Governor, Steve Racette.
- Welcome to Clinton.
- Yes.
[MAN SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY] - Off the gate.
- Step back.
[RACETTE] Halfway down.
Uh, twenty-three.
Actually, 22.
Here's 22.
This was, uh, Inmate Matt's cell, Governor.
Watch your step, Governor.
Wow.
That's a clean cut.
[RACETTE] It's solid metal.
How long do we think they were at it? Uh, we're still collecting evidence.
This is all pretty fresh for us.
What's on the other side? There's a catwalk.
Where'd they go from there? Down? - [RACETTE] Yep.
- And then? Then they, uh, cut into a steam pipe.
Well, I'd like to see that.
Well, boss, uh, I think they're searching down there.
Oh, we haven't completely cleared it down there, sir, so it may be too dangerous.
- I'll be fine.
- Oh.
Unit seven to unit two, this is en route to your location.
[WOMAN] Got it.
[INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER] Dark.
- May I? - Yes, sir.
[SIGHS] When was the last time this was searched? It's supposed to be every day, but I haven't checked the log personally.
Yeah, we should probably check.
Yes, sir.
- Jim.
- [JIM] Right here.
- Get me Chris Mullavey.
- [JIM] Yes, sir.
- [RACETTE] Get him down here.
- [JIM] Okay, right away.
[METALLIC CLANK] Said he'd be in the back on the leg press.
Okay.
I don't know, doing hack squats.
Oh, hey.
- That him? - Mm-hmm.
George Armistead? - [CATHERINE] Jeez.
- Yeah? [CATHERINE] Yeah, that's a whole lot of weight there for a man who's, quote, "unable to do work or do most anything except rest and heal.
" Shit.
[CATHERINE] Yeah, that's fraud.
Fraud? $3,200 worth.
- That's grand larceny.
- [CELL PHONE BUZZES] Yeah, worker's compensation fraud, believe it or not, is illegal.
Yeah, affects all New Yorkers.
Yeah, you want me to explain the whole trickle-down effect? Yeah? Uh so am I under arrest here? Well, I'm not the police.
I'm Catherine Leahy Scott, inspector general for the state of New York.
It's for you.
It's the governor.
Yes, sir? Seriously, that's the governor? Yeah, that's the governor.
Shit.
Where? [CLEMENT] Morning, Miss Mitchell.
Mrs.
Mitchell.
Sorry.
So I'm just, uh everything looks fine.
- [CELL PHONE BUZZES] - Gonna give you a prescription for stress the nurse has it outside but I don't see any reason to keep you here any longer.
[CELL PHONE BUZZES] R-really? I like, I don't feel right.
I-I think I should stay another day.
No, honestly, all your labs are normal.
But [SIGHS] I want can't I have a second opinion or Look, you can come back if you have another episode, but if you get some rest, you'll be fine.
[CELL PHONE BUZZES] Would you excuse me a sec? Lock the doors.
Turn on the television and see what I'm talking about.
[MAN] No, I'm just hearing about it right now.
[WOMAN] Yeah, they just they just said it now.
What are you doing up? I was just coming to see you.
He said I gotta go, so let's go.
Wait, did you talk to the doctor? Yes, Lyle.
Come on.
[SIGHS] [SIREN WAILING] [CAR DOORS SLAM] [ENGINE TURNING OVER] [ED SHEERAN OVER RADIO] a thousand stars Place your hand on my beating heart - [CELL PHONE CHIMES] - I'm thinking out loud Maybe we Found love right where we are Is that Kenny Jr.
? When my hair's all but gone - [HELICOPTER ROTORS WHIRRING] - Oh, wow.
Couple of whirlybirds.
You think there's a forest fire or something? [SIREN WAILING] Oh.
Told you.
[MAN OVER RADIO] Sorry to interrupt my man Ed Sheeran, but we got something cracking on the news right now Don't you want to hear what that was all about? Not particularly.
Could be connected with the, uh, helicopters.
[SIREN WAILING] [SIRENS WAILING] What's all this? [LYLE] Knew something was going on.
What'd I tell you? You want anything to drink? No, no, no.
Uh, this will be quick.
I'm not gonna take up a lot of your time.
As I was saying outside, we're running down a lot of leads, and we're really just trying to figure out where these guys might be.
I knew it wasn't a forest fire.
Too many cop cars.
So, um, who escaped? Uh, their names are Richard Matt and David Sweat.
Holy shit.
We know those guys.
- Yeah, yeah, we-we know 'em.
- Did Right, uh, you worked in your shop with them, right? - Yeah.
- Right, okay.
Well, did-did they ever, uh, say anything or behave in a way that you might have considered it suspicious or Mm.
- No.
- No? [PEN SCRATCHING] How the hell did they get out of there, anyway? [LYLE] That's what I'm thinking.
How did they escape out of that place? Well, apparently, they got out somehow, and they're both pretty dangerous individuals, and right now, they're running for their lives, so, you know, however you knew them to be in there, they're in a lot different circumstances now.
[LYLE] Well, where the hell do you think they could've went? I mean, they-they can't have got too far.
Well, neither one of these guys are from the area, which makes it difficult to escape, because where do you go? - Yeah, where do you go? - [PHIL] Right.
[LYLE] Yeah.
Yeah.
Um, you think there's any chance they might know where you live? - [LYLE] No way.
- [TILLY] No.
- No? No? - No.
Okay, well, anyway, I would keep my doors locked, definitely, and it might be best to just be careful if you're going out.
Oh, boy.
So we're supposed to call you if we remember anything, right? [LAUGHS] Exactly.
All right, thank you.
Thanks.
[KETTLE WHISTLING] Phil Osley, detective.
[SIGHS] Uneasy music [MAN] Sir.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER] [MAN YELLING] Go back, go back, go back! [SIREN WAILING] [SPENCER] Yeah.
Yeah, we're coming up now.
I don't know.
I've never been here.
All right.
- [DOOR CLANKS OPEN] - [MAN] Unit ten to control.
Hold all traffic to front gate.
Catherine Leahy Scott, - inspector general.
- Stand by.
Good morning.
Sergeant Garnier.
- [CATHERINE] Nice to meet you.
- You just sign right here, and I'll take you to see the governor.
- [CATHERINE] Excellent.
- Spencer Freedman.
I need all your cell phones.
Not mine.
[LUMPY] Yeah, everyone.
Really? You just let two guys escape from here, and now you won't let the inspector general of the state of New York - bring her cell phone in? - It's policy, ma'am.
[CATHERINE] Okay, whatever.
I'll play your little reindeer games.
- [SIGHS] - [METAL DETECTOR BEEPS] [LUMPY] Whoa, whoa, whoa.
[METAL DETECTOR BEEPS] [METAL DETECTOR BEEPS] - Danny, wand her, please.
- Yup, sure.
[LUMPY] Sir, can I look in your bag? - [SPENCER] Yeah.
- [MAN] Quickly, please.
- Can I go through? - Yeah, you're good.
Yeah? [GUESS] So no gaps in the perimeter? Return to the command post.
Advise the operations officer.
- Major.
- [GUESS] Thank you.
[GUESS] How was the tour, Governor? We need to throw a press conference together right away.
Got it.
I have everyone in the superintendent's office.
- Excuse me, Governor.
- Catherine.
Ever think you'd set foot in this place? [SCOFFS] No, sir.
I saw the whole route.
Must have taken them months.
Nobody inspecting anything.
You think they had help? [GUESS] Currently, we have over 200 law enforcement officers in the area.
No stone is being left unturned.
[LYLE] You never know what the person next to you is thinking or planning, and this proves it.
I mean, who would've know those two guys were escaping out of that place? Maybe two of the most normal guys in there.
They weren't normal.
[LYLE] Oh, sure they were.
I know those guys.
- You could talk to them.
- Uh-huh.
- We got food.
- [TILLY] All right.
Kenny.
[DENNIS] All right, come on, girls.
Get in here.
You know what the fucking sad thing is? You know they're gonna fire Racette, and he was actually cleaning that place up.
I heard he requested a lockdown yesterday.
They turned him down 'cause of overtime.
They don't even have any fucking leads.
Well, you don't know that.
They don't know where to look.
Knowing them, they don't even have the brains to kill 'em.
I think they should keep them alive, find out what happened.
Oh, they'd say anything.
[CUOMO OVER TV] This facility was built in 1865, so [LYLE] Tilly, could I, uh, see you in the kitchen for a second? [CUOMO OVER TV] it, uh, was an elaborate plot, and we went back and, uh, we pieced together what they did.
It was elaborate.
It was sophisticated.
It encompassed drilling through steel walls [QUIETLY] You know, uh, I was thinking, uh What? You should probably tell the cops about that painting you got.
- What? - The one Matt gave you.
Why the fuck would I do that? Has his fingerprints on it.
So? So fingerprints are the number one way they find people.
[SCOFFS] Lyle, they're prisoners.
Their fingerprints are on file.
What the fuck would they do with them, anyway? They could find a fingerprint on a tree, and then when they match it, they'll know which way they're going.
They're not in the trees! They're probably already on a beach in Mexico.
What would they be doing in Mexico? I don't know.
Maybe because it doesn't suck ass to live in Mexico.
[CUOMO OVER TV] Uh, the state police are here You think it sucks ass to live here? [CUOMO] in their partnership, working Hey, why are you mad at me? You take me for granted, you know that? [CUOMO] Find the two individuals and return them to prison.
That's the first order of business, and we're working on that.
These are dangerous people, and they're nothing to be trifled with.
We're asking for the help of the people across the state.
We want the help of the public.
We want New Yorkers exercising that spirit of community that makes New York so special.
[GUN COCKING] We have pictures posted of these two individuals.
If you see them, if you know anything, if you've heard anything, please contact the state police or your local police as soon as possible.
The state police outlined the operation that they're going through to find the escapees as well as the Department of Corrections, which has deployed extraordinary troops and extraordinary resources to be part of this collective effort.
It's very important that we locate these individuals.
They are dangerous somber music [MATT SIGHS] [SWEAT] That's Clinton.
[MATT SIGHS] Bright motherfucker.
And that must be Chazy Lake which means Canada is about 25 miles that way.
Gonna cut that bitch up into tiny little pieces, like cubed ham.
[HELICOPTER ROTORS WHIRRING] [GRUNTS] How far you think her house is from here? Hmm? [SWEAT] We're not going there.
Who said anything about going there? But now that you mention it [RAIN PATTERING] [THUNDER RUMBLING] [THUNDER RUMBLING] [WOMAN OVER TV] Well, police have been everywhere here.
There have been snipers, FBI agents, forest rangers searching through fields such as the one behind me, and they finally did confirm that they were looking for Richard Matt and David Sweat, who escaped from prison recently.
Police began swarming the streets in this area just last night.
On Tuesday, busloads of officers showed up on the rural roads along Willsboro in Essex - Where you going? - We need groceries.
[WOMAN OVER TV] heavily armed officers searching in northern New York, where I'll get my .
38.
[WOMAN OVER TV] The video uploaded on Facebook shows [MAN OVER P.
A.
SYSTEM] Signature, customer service desk.
Customer service desk, signature, please.
Wouldn't mind one of those, uh, pot pies.
Yeah, those are pretty good.
Ah, be right back.
Pick up some DiGiornos.
Yeah.
Hello.
Hey, what's up? It's, uh, Joyce Mitchell.
You come by the house - the other day.
- Right, right.
- How you doing? - Look, don't get mad, okay? Uh, okay.
I was just afraid of losing my job.
I think I might be in a little bit of trouble.
Um, all right.
Anyway, what I want to tell you is, I gave him a You know, before you go any further, I-I think it's a good idea to read you your rights.
- What? - Pepperoni or supreme? Supreme, Lyle.
Just keep shopping.
- Sorry.
- I-it's no big deal.
I just think it's a good idea for your own protection.
Okay? So, um, you have the right to remain silent.
Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
You have a right to talk to a lawyer and have them present during questioning.
If you can't afford a lawyer, one will be appointed to you, free of charge.
You can exercise these rights at any time and not answer any questions.
All right? Do you understand these rights that I have explained to you today? - Yes.
- Okay, good.
Uh, I-is that it? Yes, that's it.
That's it.
Okay.
Am I under arrest? No, no, you're not under arrest.
Anyway, so what is it that you wanted to tell me? Well, just not a big deal.
I just I gave him a picture to make a painting for my husband for our anniversary.
This is Richard Matt we're talking about.
Yeah.
And, uh, did you give him anything in return? Oh, no.
Mm-mm.
Um you have my card, right? If you remember anything else, can you give me a call? Okay.
Okay.
Uneasy music Uneasy music Let's do it.
[WHISPERING] Go around.
Fuck that.
Yo.
Yo! Yo, bad fucking idea.
[TWIG SNAPS] [BIRDS CHIRPING] It's empty.
[GRUNTS] [MATT] It's all good in the hood, wood.
[SWEAT] Yo, don't get too comfy.
We're leaving in 20 minutes.
Gotcha.
Oh, shit, yeah.
Look at this.
Oh, look at all this shit.
Holy shit.
Fuck yeah.
Fuck.
What's that? Huh? What was that? [SWISHING LOUDLY] [GULPS] Ah.
- Hmm.
- [BOTTLES CLINKING] Yo, just one.
Don't cheat yourself, man.
Treat yourself.
[CATHERINE] Uh, when did you first commence employment at Clinton Correctional? [GENE] August 24, 1987.
[CATHERINE] Mm-hmm.
And what title did you hold? [GENE] I had several jobs over that time frame.
North yard, I worked in the mess hall, I worked in the school, and then I was tailor shop escort.
[CATHERINE] Mm-hmm, and can you describe, in general, your responsibilities as escort to the tailor shop? [GENE] Yeah.
I patrol the industry.
I go from all the shops.
I patrol the school.
If an inmate needs an escort, whether it be, uh, to the hospital or the block, then that's when I would perform that task.
Okay, well, I want to ask you about a circumstance surrounding there was a delivery of meat made to Matt.
Do you recall? Yes.
Mm-hmm, and-and how did that happen? She told me there was meat in the shop freezer for Matt.
Who is "she"? Joyce Mitchell.
Joyce Mitchell.
And you're sure it was Joyce who approached you first and not Matt? Yes.
Okay, continue.
I took it out of the freezer and gave it to Matt.
Did she say why she was giving Matt meat? No.
Did you ask her why she was giving Matt meat? No.
Did that seem unusual? I knew we were in a gray area with the meat.
Okay, but she never explained why she was giving Matt - a huge chunk of meat? - No.
- And you did not ask? - No.
I told her that she shouldn't be doing this, what-what she was doing was wrong.
She needed something, she should go through me, because that wasn't the protocol, for a woman to be doing that.
So it's okay if you were doing it but Joyce, not so much.
- Yes.
- Mm.
And why is it okay if you're doing it? [CHUCKLES] Well it's not okay.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER, PHONE RINGS] [CATHERINE] This is unbelievable.
[SPENCER] I know.
Is she in custody? She's about to be.
How did they get her to make four different statements? They said she just keeps coming in.
[WOMAN OVER TV] This ribbon cutting is more than a hundred years in the making Wow.
My own pioneer woman.
[DIALOGUE CONTINUES INDISTINCTLY OVER TV] Makes me happy when you cook.
Damn it, Lyle! - [DOGS BARKING] - [LYLE] Let me help.
Just back off.
No-ie no.
Don't eat it.
You'll get salmonella.
Ruckus! Go, boy.
Go, go.
[DOGS BARKING] [DIALOGUE CONTINUES INDISTINCTLY OVER TV] I'm lucky.
[GLUMLY] I'm lucky.
How much time we got on that chicken? Supposed to check it in an hour.
[CAR APPROACHING] [SIGHS] What do they want? [DIALOGUE CONTINUES INDISTINCTLY OVER TV] You want me to get rid of them? I think you told them enough already.
They're coming to take me away now.
- What? - [KNOCK AT DOOR] - They are.
- No, they're not.
They're coming to take me away - 'cause they think I did it.
- [LOUD KNOCKING] Did what? Ms.
Mitchell, can you please just come to the door? No, we're coming! We're coming.
Look, sweetheart, just let me talk to them, all right? I'm sure whatever it is, they-they got the wrong guy.
You have to take the chicken out in an hour.
- [LOUD KNOCKING] - You prick it with a fork.
If the juices are pink, then you have to put it in - [LOUD KNOCKING] - Another 15 minutes.
- [DOOR UNLATCHES] - All right.
You can't come in here without a warrant.
Good evening, Joyce.
I'm gonna have to put you under arrest.
Somber music [SIRENS WAILING] [PEOPLE SHOUTING] - [CHAINS RATTLING] - [WOMAN] Tilly! Mrs.
Mitchell! [WOMAN] Mrs.
Mitchell! [REPORTERS CLAMORING] [MAN] Mrs.
Mitchell! [YELLING INDISTINCTLY] [WOMAN] Mrs.
Mitchell! [REPORTERS CLAMORING] - [WOMAN] Mrs.
Mitchell! - [MAN] Mrs.
Mitchell! [CHAINS RATTLING] [MAN SCOFFS] - Jeez.
- Mm.
[SPENCER AND CATHERINE SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY] [CATHERINE] Can you get me it by Sunday afternoon? I'm gonna be working all weekend, so - [SPENCER] Yeah, sure.
- [CATHERINE] Okay.
- We have a lot of stuff to go over.
- I'll, uh, be in in a minute.
[SPENCER] All right.
Hi.
Joyce? - Hello.
- Hi.
Spencer Freedman.
I'm the executive deputy inspector general.
I'm gonna bring you in here to answer a few questions.
Is there anything I can get for you coffee, water? No, I don't need anything.
Okay.
All right, well, if you'll just follow me, please.
[SPENCER] Thank you.
You can wait in the hallway.
[TILLY SIGHS] [SIREN WAILING, HELICOPTER ROTORS WHIRRING] It'll just be a moment.
Sure I can't get you anything? Okay.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER] [DOOR CLICKS OPEN] [CATHERINE] Hi.
I'm Catherine Leahy Scott.
Nice to meet you, Joyce.
Everybody calls me Tilly.
Tilly it is.
Joyce is my mother's name.
When you call me Joyce, I feel like you're talking to my mother.
Is your mom still with us? [SIGHS] [CATHERINE] Good.
I love knowing my mom's just a phone call away.
[TILLY] I already talked to the cops.
[CATHERINE] Four times in seven days, I understand.
Eerie synth music [TILLY] Yeah, so what is this? [CATHERINE] Let's not get into any details until the stenographer gets here.
I mean, even though it's all taped, it's actually more accurate this girl especially.
She's been with me 15 years.
I did a comparison, and I was right.
[TILLY] Are you with the state police? [CATHERINE] Please, no, I'm the inspector general for the state of New York.
[GRASS RUSTLING] Ha! Let me check it.
[SNIFFS] [EXHALES] [SNIFFS] Fuck.
[SNIFFS, EXHALES] It's no good.
[SWEAT] Yo! You're gonna gonna get fucking sick, bro.
Ah.
Fuck.
[SWEAT] Don't fucking listen to me.
[INTESTINES GROWL] [SPUTTERING] [GROANS] [GRUNTING] [INTESTINES GROWL] [GROANS] [KNOCKING] [KNOCKING] You broke the fucking window.
Oh, they got satellite TV.
Will you put a branch in it, at least? Make it look like an accident? [MAN OVER TV] The pitcher is actually closer to you.
It looks to give the perception that he's closer to you, which makes that fastball that running fastball a little bit more effective.
[SPORTS ANNOUNCER SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY OVER TV] [TV CHANNEL CHANGES] [MAN SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY OVER TV] [SWEAT BREATHING DEEPLY] [MAN OVER TV] Comes up short again to the [MAN SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY OVER TV] We should've waited for night.
[MATT] Fuck that.
I haven't seen a helicopter in four days.
[MAN SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY OVER TV] [TV CHANNELS SWITCHING] Richard Matt and David Sweat to the forests of Vermont.
Authorities now tell CNN they believe the two men who escaped Clinton Correctional Facility almost two weeks ago are not headed to Mexico as previously reported but instead are likely hiding somewhere in the forests - of Vermont.
- [MATT] See? Jake Tapper says they're looking for us in Vermont.
So we can relax.
[MAN OVER TV] the convicted killers made plans to head to Vermont after getting out.
[MATT] Wanna watch myself on TV.
[MATT GRUNTS, SIGHS] And now we take you to a CNN exclusive.
Joyce Mitchell's son, Kenny Mitchell, still standing by his mother after her arrest for helping the two men escape.
She is not the kind of person who is one You hear that? They fucking got her.
to let these guys escape from prison.
- Good.
- Uh, my mom definitely wouldn't have had an affair against my father and definitely wouldn't be with an inmate.
There's just no truth to that.
[MATT] Oh, yeah? I'll give you this, Kenny.
She didn't fuck just one inmate.
[SIGHS] [KENNY] Um, she's a good mom, and, uh, she wouldn't be involved in anything like that.
TV goes off after dark.
Puts off too much light.
[KENNY] You can, um, ask anybody in Malone.
You ask about my parents.
[INSECTS CHIRPING] [MAN OVER TV] Matt wrote, quote, "Dream fulfilled" just a few years ago.
Matt sent Mulligan a portrait of Mulligan's sister.
It shows his sister as she looked shortly before she died of cancer.
[MULLIGAN OVER TV] It certainly provokes sentiment.
That's for sure.
[MAN] Mulligan was released and has worked to turn his life around.
He says these paintings show a talent that Matt will never be able to fully make use of.
[MULLIGAN] There's some humanity in him.
There's a dark side.
Sure, there's a dark side, and that's that's what the public is portraying, but there's also a very human side to Richard Matt.
[MAN] Over the past four years, Matt sent more than ten paintings to Mulligan, including an oil-on-canvas portrait of Hillary Clinton.
[MULLIGAN] I think he captured her.
There's no question about that.
The look that she has.
[MAN] Court documents also allege that Matt gave some of his artworks to prison guard Gene Palmer in return for tools.
You know, Gene is a collector.
Hmm.
Richard Matt's partner in the daring escape is David Sweat, the man who shot and killed a Broome County sheriff's deputy in 2002.
The pair are thought to be hiding There you are, bro.
I didn't kill that fucking cop.
[WOMAN] the woods in Bristol, Vermont I know.
I didn't chop that old man up, either.
It was that motherfucking crackhead Nick.
[WOMAN] and with the two killers still at large Made a deal with the cops.
[WOMAN] asking residents to be vigilant and to lock their doors.
An interesting coincidence.
One of my producers just told me that it's David Sweat's birthday today.
He's 35 years old.
Kristin Kelly, channel three news.
[WOMEN OVER TV] Have you ever thought about investing in gold? [WOMAN] Are you a financial planner with clients interested in gold? Hmm! [WOMAN] but the commissions were just too high.
Mm.
Sorry I didn't get you anything.
[MAN OVER TV] I'm convinced the market's gonna crash.
[LIQUID POURING] Yeah, remember, we gotta leave before it gets light.
[WOMAN OVER TV] I remember the '70s Mm-hmm.
[MAN OVER TV] That's true.
Gold's a perfect investment for my son's future.
[DIALOGUE CONTINUES INDISTINCTLY OVER TV] Oh, Jesus.
Oh! [MATT] What? What? Dude, you fucking killed it in there.
What do you want? I got sick.
I told you not to drink that fucking water.
Man, you gotta clean that up.
That's evidence.
That's DNA.
No way.
I'm not cleaning it up.
It's gross.
You clean it up.
I am not cleaning up your fucking shit.
[DIALOGUE CONTINUES INDISTINCTLY OVER TV] Then I guess it's not getting cleaned up.
[MAN OVER TV] Saving water helps protect our nation's water supply.
I challenge you to find better appliances at a better value than Wilson's Appliance Center.
[MAN OVER TV] We turn our attention to Republicans who are running for president in 2016.
For that discussion, Daniel Halper, The Weekly Standard.
He's their online editor.
Thanks for joining us.
[HALPER] Hey, thanks for having me.
[MAN] So we had five on the Democratic side [BREATHES DEEPLY] [DIALOGUE CONTINUES INDISTINCTLY OVER TV] Jesus.
Oh, God.
Ugh! [GRUNTS] [PLUNGER SQUELCHING] - [TOILET FLUSHING] - Oh, God.
[DIALOGUE CONTINUES INDISTINCTLY OVER TV] [MAN] One of the people, at least on the Republican side, they'd be seemed to be captured by Donald Trump.
Here's what he had to say when he formally entered the Republican presidential race.
[TRUMP] Sadly, the American dream is dead.
But if I get elected president, I will bring it back, bigger and better and stronger than ever before, and we will make American great again.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
[MAN] By Donald Trump when he entered the Republican presidential race [SIGHS] [DIALOGUE CONTINUES INDISTINCTLY OVER TV] Grab a shot.
[DIALOGUE CONTINUES INDISTINCTLY OVER TV] No, I'm good.
[DIALOGUE CONTINUES INDISTINCTLY OVER TV] [INHALES DEEPLY] Fuck that.
I wanna make a toast.
Grab a shot.
[DIALOGUE CONTINUES INDISTINCTLY OVER TV] To David Sweat on his 35th birthday.
- Many happy returns - [GLASSES CLINK] of the day.
[DIALOGUE CONTINUES INDISTINCTLY OVER TV] [SWALLOWS] Uneasy music - [GLASS THUNKS DOWN] - Yes, sir.
[GUN COCKING] Look what I found.
[BLOWS TWICE] Where'd you get that? It was in the shitter.
Hey.
Well, we got ourselves a plan now.
Find a road [BLOWS TWICE] stop a car, we'll be in Canada in 45 minutes.
You just want to kill some people, leave some bodies in the middle of the road? Why'd you pick up that gun for? Huh? [ENGINE PUTTERING] [DOG BARKING] Come out! Who are you? Dolly, stay! [DOG WHINES, BARKS] Uneasy music [LYLE] Jesus Christ.
She was, uh, friendly with them two guys, and, uh, some people might wanna make a connection there.
"She was a home wrecker before she was the alleged accomplice to a pair of jail breakers.
Joyce Mitchell was a serial cheater, her ex-husband told The Daily News on Wednesday.
'I loved her.
She was my wife, and then all of a sudden, she cheated, ' - Kenny Barille said.
" - Mitchell, you have a visit.
[KENNY] "'She screwed up everything.
We had a son, and we had a nice house and everything.
' Asked if it was possible if the woman he knew as Tilly could have fallen for convicted killer Richard Matt, Barille quickly agreed.
" Oh, my sweetheart.
Yeah, uh, we couldn't make bail, Mom.
Why? Why? Ten grand is a lot of money.
[SIGHS] They didn't want to help you, did they? Some did.
It just wasn't enough.
I'm sorry.
I tried.
I even put up my boat as collateral.
I really don't need a guilt trip right now, Kenny.
[SIGHS] You know how hard I am on myself.
[KENNY] Well do you want to know how Dad's doing? [TILLY] Yes.
[KENNY] He doesn't believe any of the stories that are out there.
[TILLY] What stories? - [KENNY] You know.
- [WOMAN] There he is! [WOMAN] Do you know which of the inmates your wife was having an affair with? [WOMAN] Do you plan on leaving her? [MAN] Do you know about the escape? [TILLY SIGHS] [KENNY] But don't worry.
He's standing by ya.
[TILLY] Well, you say that like it's a bad thing.
Well, are they true? [SCOFFS, CRIES] [WATER SLOSHES] Hey, did you know that when I was 12 years old, I ran away from my foster home on a horse I stole? Yeah.
I spent a week in the woods, alone.
Just me and that horse.
Man, that horse ate even when I didn't.
But then one day, he got spooked.
Threw me off.
I was knocked out.
But when I woke up, that horse he wasn't there.
[MOSQUITOES BUZZING] Yep.
[MATT] I knew she wasn't gonna show up.
And how did I know? Micro-expressions.
[BOTTLE CLATTERING] Micro-expressions.
You can smile with your mouth but not with the rest of your face, and she did that.
Yeah.
When someone is angry, they don't always act angry.
Yo, come on, man.
People come out to their cabins on Thursday, so shut the fuck up.
Yo, come on, bro.
Let's go.
[BOTTLE CLINKS] Grape-flavored gin.

Yo, get up.
I said get the fuck up.
[SIGHS] Oh? Dave you repress your rage, you know that? That's how people get the cancer.
I'm not gonna die out here because you got drunk.
Do you hear me? I am not going to fucking die out here with you, man.
Eh.
You're not gonna die because of me.
You're gonna die because of that bitch.
Yeah, Tilly.
- Really? - Tilly.
- Yeah.
- Yeah, Tilly.
It's not her, bro.
It's you.
Mm.

A dramatic new development tonight.
We've learned that Dannemora prison escapee Richard Matt has been shot and killed.
There's now a foot chase for David Sweat.
The incident occurred after the pair tried to hijack a camper by shooting at it.
That brought a massive response from state police and CERT teams, who descended on the area.
Matt was shot by a U.
S.
Border Patrol agent after refusing to drop a shotgun he had pointed at him.
U.
S.
marshals, state police, and all involved are now chasing David Sweat on foot.
Matt, whose birthday was yesterday, had just turned 49.
Stay tuned for updates on this breaking story.

[PANTING] B-1-0-1, I got suspect at guard here, north alfalfa field.
Somber music [WOMAN] inmate David Sweat had been shot and captured just a few miles from where I now stand.
[WOMAN] We understand he was shot in a town a few miles south of the Canadian border, the town of Constable.
We don't have all the details [MAN] ending the three-week hunt for the two prisoners, who escaped from Dannemora [WOMAN] With pinpoint accuracy, Sergeant Cook hit David Sweat from almost 100 yards away.
[WOMAN] 23 days when he was captured.
Right now, he is being treated inside of a hospital [WOMAN] David Sweat is in critical condition at Albany Medical Center, and he has not been formally interviewed by investigators.
[MACHINES BUZZING] [RESPIRATOR HISSING] Hi.
I'm Catherine Leahy Scott.
I'm the inspector general for the state of New York.
Okay, so you and your partner split up.
Yeah.
Mm-hmm, and when was that? Uh three or four days ago.
And why did you split up? Uh You know, the state police thought he might have killed you in the forest.
They said that? Well, yeah.
They got to him and saw that you weren't with him, and he had the kind of background that would make you wonder.
That fat piece of shit was slowing me down.
That's why we split up.
Hey, watch it.
I can handle a four-letter word, Officer.
Thank you.
[SIGHS] I've been in the tunnels.
Yeah? Yeah, that's my main focus right now.
How did you pull this off? How did you plan it? The ventilation system you came up with is very impressive.
Yeah? Well, I had to hot-wire the fan, which was actually pretty challenging because I had already jerry-rigged another light I had found on the same circuit.
Can you tell me how you found your way to the pipe? Good sense of direction, good memory.
Takes time, though.
Couple weeks.
Two brick walls.
If you believe you're gonna get out those are just obstacles.
And is Matt down there with you at any point? [LAUGHS] No.
I mean, a couple times, maybe once, before we left.
He didn't like that pipe, though.
Well, this is all your idea.
You're doing all the work, right? More or less.
It said in the report that you made it out the night before.
Dry run.
Right.
And why did you go back in? What do you mean? Well, you would've gotten away if you were on your own.
You went, what, 21 miles in 21 days with him and 18 miles in two days without him.
[LAUGHS] Shit, I guess I was moving pretty fast.
Yeah, almost made it to Canada.
I never even thought to leave him.
Excuse me? I never thought to leave him.
I gave him my word, and in prison, that's all you got.
So you were friends.
Mm I don't know.
[DOOR CLICKS OPEN] [SPENCER] I got the governor.
Okay, thank you.
Excuse me.
I'll be right back.
Melancholy music [KEYS JANGLING] [LOCK CLATTERS] [DOOR SQUEAKS OPEN] [INDISTINCT CHATTER] [DOOR CLICKS SHUT] [TILLY] Hmm.
Hi.
You look like the Hamburglar.
[LAUGHS] You look skinny.
Haven't been hungry.
Your lawyer said, uh, gonna be three years.
Three to seven.
Said you could get, uh, Bedford Hills.
Get out of town, like you wanna.
I miss you, Lyle.
Do you miss me? I knew you were having an affair on me.
You know how I knew? When you started ordering off the diet menu at King's Wok.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
Could've ended up dead.
You didn't, 'cause I couldn't go through with it.
No? W-why not? Maybe 'cause I still love you.
Are you gonna wait for me? There's a lot to talk about.
I'll see you at the court tomorrow.
[SNIFFLES] [FOOTSTEPS THUMP AWAY] [SNIFFLES] [INDISTINCT CHATTER] [WOMAN] Let me have some of that sauce.
- [WOMAN] I got it.
- [WOMAN] All right.
[GUARDS SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY] [MAN] Yeah, yeah, thanks.
[TILLY SIGHS] Oh, uh, hey, would would you do me a favor? Would you listen to this and tell me what you think about it? It's for when I have to give my statement to the judge.
Okay.
[SIGHS] "Please allow me to start by saying how much remorse I have for everything that's happened with my part in Matt and Sweat's escape.
I'm 51 years old.
This is by far the worst mistake I've ever made in my life.
I not only let myself down but my family.
I love them more than life itself, Your Honor.
None of this was ever my intentions.
I'm not a bad person.
I realize I need to be responsible for my actions, but I am hoping you will have mercy on me, Your Honor.
" My lawyer said I have to sound apologetic.
Does does that sound apologetic to you? It's worth a shot.
Hey, um sometimes I like to throw an inmate a little party the night before she gets out of here.
Something you'd be interested in? [SIGHS] I'll be around.
Think about it.
