Lost In Space (1965) s01e26 Episode Script

All That Glitters

[ Man Narrating .]
Last week, as you recall Will Robinson, along with the professor, Major West and the Robot had left our space camp in search of vitally needed water.
Professor Smith and the women remained at the Jupiter 2 unaware that off in the darkness a desperate fugitive from outer-space justice had suddenly been turned loose on their planet.
[ Electronic Warbling .]
Oh, what a pleasant evening it is.
I think I shall sleep under the stars tonight.
Well, if you do, Dr.
Smith, I'd advise you to move inside the force field.
Oh, come, come, madam.
What could possibly happen on a quiet, peaceful evening like this? [ Roaring .]
You stupid, bumbling brutes, you've lost him! I'll have you punished for this.
Do you hear? Now pick up his trail.
I want him found.
[ Roaring .]
Mmm.
If you don't stop eating those, Dr.
Smith, we'll never get enough.
A few samples will never be missed.
It was a full pail when you started.
I have eaten only 103 berries.
I counted them.
All right, but you explain to Mom why we didn't get enough berries to make more than one pie.
Oh, dear.
Perhaps I had better replenish the pail.
No point in arousing your mother's ire.
Ah, yes, here we go.
Now, then.
- One for the master-- - Dr.
Smith.
One for the Dane, and one for the little boy who lives across the-- [ Gasps .]
Penny, we will back away slowly.
When I give the word, run.
Run, Penny, run! [ Screams .]
Help me.
- We've got to help him.
- Penny, what's the matter with you? - There's something wrong with him.
- I couldn't care less.
We can't just leave him out here.
He may be hurt or sick.
Indeed, we can.
- We've got to help him.
- Now, you listen to me, Penny Robinson.
We are not going to get involved with some sort of alien.
We have our own troubles.
You should be ashamed of yourself, Dr.
Smith.
The poor creature needs us.
Mister, is there something I can do for you? Don't get too close! - I think he's unconscious, Dr.
Smith.
- Then there's nothing more we can do.
- Let's go! - No, wait.
Oh, look at his clothes.
Poor thing, they're practically rags.
Mister? [ Screams .]
Let go of me! Let go of me! Let go of me! Dr.
Smith, help me! I'll run for help, Penny! Dr.
Smith, don't leave me! Let go of me! - Stop struggling! You cannot get away.
- Let go of me! I'm Penny Robinson from the planet Earth.
- Where'd the other Earthling go? - To get help, I hope.
Have you seen an alien with two animals? - Quick, answer me! - No, sir.
In a uniform.
Are you sure? No, I haven't seen anyone.
Please, let me go.
I promise I won't run.
Very well.
I'm too tired to hold you any longer.
Help! Where is everyone? Help! Help! - What's wrong? - What's the matter? He got Penny.
I tried to warn her, but she wouldn't listen.
What-- What are you talking about? Now just calm down.
- Who got Penny? - An alien.
He suddenly grabbed her.
We thought he was unconscious, but he was only faking.
- And you ran away and left her.
- Under the circumstances there was nothing else I could do.
Oh, don't look at me that way.
I would gladly lay down my life to save that dear child.
Well, you missed a golden opportunity.
Now, where did you leave them? Only a short distance from here.
I'll take you there after I arm myself.
We haven't time for you to get a weapon.
Now, come on.
But the alien is extremely dangerous! Judy and I will protect you.
Let's go! - Come on! - Oh, yes! - Penny! - Penny? - She's gone! Penny? - Penny! - I left them both right here.
- [ Footsteps Approaching .]
- Penny, is that you? - [ Creatures Roaring .]
Oh, two of them! It's an invasion! [ Creatures Roar .]
Run, Judy, run! [ Creatures Roaring .]
I'll turn on the force field.
- [ Electricity Crackles .]
- [ Creatures Roar .]
It stopped them.
Oh, dear.
Flesh and blood can stand only so much.
I'm in a state of complete shock.
At least you're safe, Dr.
Smith.
Penny is still out there.
Poor child.
Who knows what dire fate has befallen her.
I'm fine.
Oh! Penny.
Oh, my! I was so worried about you.
I'm fine, Mom.
Really I am.
Dr.
Smith said you were a prisoner.
How did you get away? - The alien let me go.
- Oh, thank heaven for that.
At least we have met one alien with a spark of decency and compassion.
- All I care about is that Penny is safe and sound.
- Yes.
Yes, now tell us, what happened to the alien? - Well, I brought him back to the spaceship with me.
- You what? He's below deck, asleep in Dr.
Smith's quarters.
- What? - Just fell into the bed.
The poor man was at the end of his strength.
You placed him in my quarters? In my bed? Well, I couldn't very well let him sleep on the floor.
Oh, Penny, how could you? He was absolutely filthy.
[ Penny .]
Not anymore he isn't.
He took a shower.
Oh, and I gave him some of your clothes.
I hope you don't mind.
Oh, certainly not.
Why should I mind sharing my meager belongings with every hobo that wanders by? - I have plenty of everything.
- Ohan isn't a hobo.
He's a fugitive from justice.
Now I've heard everything.
This cannot be true.
A criminal is sleeping in my bed, wearing my clothes.
- He'll probably murder us all! - Oh, Dr.
Smith.
You always exaggerate so.
Ohan isn't that kind of a criminal.
He's, well, I guess you'd call him sort of, um an international galactic burglar.
Oh, this is too much.
I feel faint.
Penny.
Penny, I think you'd better tell me all you know about our unexpected guest.
Now, you say his name is Ohan? Yes.
I wasn't able to find out too much.
He was awfully tired.
But I do know he escaped from the planet prison, and he's being hunted.
Well, did he tell you what he's doing here? No.
Oh, but he's not a bad person, Mom.
Honest he isn't.
He only grabbed me because he was afraid I'd run away and leave him.
This is a fine how do you do, madam.
A fugitive from justice inside and two monsters waiting outside.
[ Judy .]
They're gone.
At least I don't see them anywhere.
Well, I'm gonna leave the force field on just in case they come back.
- What about the alien? - We'll decide what to do about him later when he awakens.
As far as I'm concerned, madam, that decision is already made.
Since the other male members of this family are absent, I am in command.
The safety of all of you is my responsibility.
Ohan or "Oh, hunk" or whatever his name is, goes.
Well, sir, all ready to leave? So sorry you can't stay, but I think you do understand how things are.
[ Maureen .]
There's no need to be rude, Dr.
Smith.
Mr.
Ohan, perhaps if you'd like to stay and rest a little while longer-- I've already placed you in enough danger.
- I must leave.
- Yes, I think you should.
What will you do? Hide, and hope that eventually they stop searching for me.
Wouldn't it be better if you gave yourself up and served your prison sentence? Yes, and when you got out, you could start life all over again, fresh and clean.
[ Laughs .]
You do not understand.
I'm a professional thief.
In my world, that's a time-honored profession.
My father and his father and his father before him were all thieves.
The Ohan reputation is respected throughout the whole galaxy.
Yes, I'm sure it is.
I detect a note of cynicism in your voice, sir.
Well, surely you can't expect me to be impressed with anyone who operates as a criminal.
Well, then perhaps I should demonstrate my talents.
There.
You've been robbed by an expert, Dr.
Smith.
Ha! You couldn't have taken anything from me.
You're mistaken.
Your watch.
Good heavens.
Just one of my minor talents.
And now I must leave.
I want to thank you all again for helping me.
Especially to you, young lady.
- Good-bye, sir.
- Bye.
I'll turn the force field off for you.
I hope they don't catch up with him.
I like him.
Your admiration is misplaced, young lady.
Ohan is hardly the stuff of which heroes are made.
And now if you'll excuse me, I must check my quarters.
I have probably been robbed.
Yes.
Now, we've all finished breakfast.
I shall assign our tasks for today.
Penny, you will-- I know, work in the hydroponic garden.
You're clairvoyant this morning, dear child.
How could I miss? It's been my job for the last four days.
We all have our labors to perform.
And how do you intend to occupy yourself, Dr.
Smith? As a matter of fact, I have quite a heavy schedule, madam.
I shall be extremely busy.
Yes, in the garden.
I need Penny to help me today.
Oh, unless you'd rather do it.
What does the job entail? Well, we're gonna give the spaceship a general cleaning.
All the freezing units and the living quarters.
Trapped between being a farmer or a housemaid.
- Hardly an enviable choice.
- [ Creatures Roar .]
The monsters, they've come back.
- Who's the leader here? - [ Maureen And Dr.
Smith .]
I am.
[ Sighs .]
Dr.
Smith, please.
- Really, madam.
- What can I do for you, sir? I'm Security Officer Bolix of the Galaxy Law Enforcement Agency.
I'm from the planet Tauron, our base headquarters.
My identification.
Just a moment, sir.
Yes, it seems to be in order.
[ Gasps .]
I'm Maureen Robinson, and these are my-- There is no need for introduction.
I know who you are where you come from, why you're here.
There's quite a file on the Robinson party in our office.
You see, my office has kept track of all of your activities.
Especially yours, Dr.
Smith.
If that remark is meant as a slur upon my character, I resent it exceedingly.
Sir, if you have a complaint, I suggest you file it with my superiors.
- Indeed.
- Well, how did you learn to speak English, Officer Bolix? I've had special training.
You see, we've been expecting travelers from Earth for quite some time.
But never mind that.
Where is Ohan? Now, before any of you answer, I warn you lying to a Galaxy Law Enforcement Officer is a very serious offense.
We have no intention of lying to you but you'll get a great deal more cooperation out of us if you don't bully us.
Mrs.
Robinson, just answer my questions.
Where is Ohan? He's not here.
He left last night.
What time did he leave? - Well, I'm not sure.
- We are not his keepers, sir.
It was after 8:00, but what difference does it make? He's not here now.
That's what counts.
Young woman, I shall ask the questions, and you shall answer.
Now just a minute.
We're not a gang of criminals and I won't have you treating us like one.
There's no need for belligerence, sir.
No need at all.
Mrs.
Robinson, did you know that Ohan was a fugitive from the law? - Yes, I did.
- Yet you gave him food and shelter.
- He was starving and needed help.
- It was the least we could do.
Then you realize that you broke the law.
You are guilty of aiding and abetting a criminal.
Now, I could place you all under arrest for that.
Oh, that won't be necessary, I'm sure.
Now, let's not get unduly excited.
Perhaps we made a little mistake.
But under the circumstances, it's quite understandable.
Now, Officer Bolix, all you're interested in is Ohan.
- Is that correct? - That's correct.
Well, let me assure you, sir, he's not here.
In that case, if you don't mind, I shall search your spaceship.
Isn't our word good enough for you? Nothing personal, Mrs.
Robinson.
I just do not trust anyone.
Come with me.
Just a minute, Officer Bolix.
Now, if you would be good enough, please leave these, uh, animals out here.
There's a great deal of delicate equipment inside.
They might break something.
If you insist, Mrs.
Robinson.
Get back! [ Creatures Grunting .]
I'll show you around the spaceship.
I'll go with you.
I know officers have to be tough to do their jobs, but I don't like him.
He's not entirely to blame, Penny.
Years of association with the underworld element have twisted his character.
- [ Growling .]
- Officer Bolix you will not find Ohan hiding in our personal property.
Now, you have no right to pry into our effects.
I really must insist that you stop this search and leave.
Now, Mrs.
Robinson, let me tell you something.
I am the sole representative of the law in over a million miles and I have the authority to do anything I please.
Well, as far as I'm concerned, here you're out of bounds.
Very well.
Just what do you expect to find in there? I suppose there's no harm in telling you.
- Ohan's escape from prison was all a prearranged plan.
- But why? Before he was arrested, he stole something of great value.
We released him in the hope that he might lead us to it.
And you expect to find it here on our spaceship? Yes, I expect to find it here on your spaceship.
Now, do you mind if I continue my search? Sure have been in there a long time.
Officer Bolix is obviously a very thorough individual, Penny.
A dedicated servant of the law with only one thought: Crime does not pay.
I wonder if I should tell him.
- Tell who what? - Officer Bolix, about this.
- Ohan gave it to me to keep for him.
- Shh! He said he'd come back and get it if he escaped from Officer Bolix.
But if he didn't, it was mine.
[ Dr.
Smith .]
I wonder what it is.
I don't know, but it sure is important.
He said it was the key to the greatest treasure in the whole galaxy.
- Treasure? He said, "Treasure"? - Uh-huh.
- What else did he say? - That's all.
- Dr.
Smith, look at it! - [ Gasps .]
The greatest treasure in the galaxy.
Not a word of this to anyone, Penny.
It must be our little secret.
- Are you sure, Dr.
Smith? - Positive.
After all, Ohan gave it to you to keep for him, didn't he? And you wouldn't want to betray his confidence.
And I shall take very good care of it.
I promise you.
Remember, our lips are sealed.
I'm sorry to have inconvenienced you, Mrs.
Robinson but until Ohan is apprehended, I'll be in the area.
- I'll, uh, drop in on you again.
- I'd much prefer that-- Do that, Officer Bolix.
We are always happy to see a representative of the law.
Then you are an exception to the rule, Dr.
Smith.
Guilty or not guilty, people are quite uncomfortable in the presence of, uh what you on Earth call a "flatfoot.
" We call them "policemen," and as a rule, they're extremely kind and courteous.
Well, I seem to get better results using my own methods.
- Good day to you.
- Good day.
[ Cracks Whip .]
Thank goodness he's gone.
Snooping around, asking a lot of inane questions.
Oh, he's really not so bad, Dr.
Smith.
- After all, he's only trying to do his job.
- That may be true, Judy but I think he'd get much better results if he weren't such a bully.
My feelings exactly, madam.
I was just on the point of telling him so when he left.
- Oh? - Now, if you'll excuse me I have my gardening chores to do.
Yes, I guess we'd better all get to work.
Come on, dear.
A key to a treasure.
But how do I find the lock? [ Male Voice .]
You wish information? Yes.
Yes, I do.
Then ask your question.
I would like to know where to find the greatest treasure in the galaxy.
Can you tell me? Many others have wanted this answer.
They were men of greed.
All paid a grievous price.
All met with misfortune.
Never mind that.
Where is the treasure? Before I answer, think.
Will you settle for untold wealth over all things? - Yes.
Oh, yes.
Tell me.
- [ Penny .]
Dr.
Smith? [ Gasps .]
Penny, you gave me a terrible fright.
Mom said I'd better help you in the garden after all.
Never mind that now.
I was just on the point of finding out about our treasure.
Untold riches.
- We're going to have them.
- But what are we gonna do with them? We will not stay on this wretched planet forever.
One day soon, we shall be returning to Earth and on Earth, being rich means being powerful.
[ Gasps .]
This is my lucky day.
[ Male Voice .]
You wished information? Yes.
Yes! Where is the treasure? It is you again.
I had hoped you had changed your mind.
Just answer my question.
Very well.
But it is required that I give you this warning.
Use what you shall receive with wisdom.
Do not let greed be your master.
Spare me the lecture.
Get to the point! As you wish.
Take a step forward, please.
Now close your hand tightly.
Do you feel anything? - What is it? - The disc is getting warmer.
Take another step.
[ Gasps .]
The heat is increasing.
The disc will lead you to what you seek.
As it grows warmer, so will you be closer to the treasure.
This reminds me of a game I used to play as a child.
I think it was called Hot Potato, Cold Potato.
Come along, Penny.
Let's find our treasure.
Dr.
Smith? Maybe we should forget about being rich.
I'm happy just like I am.
Well, I am not.
Are you coming with me? - I guess so.
- Good.
Now, let's find our pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
[ Gasps .]
Ah! We're coming in loud and strong now, Penny.
The disc is so hot, I can hardly hold it.
[ Gasps .]
Aaah! It burned my hand! The treasure must be right here.
[ Gasps .]
Penny, look! Oh, it can't be such a great treasure.
The hole isn't big enough.
Good things very often come in small packages.
Let us withhold our judgment.
- Find anything? - Nothing, so far.
[ Gasps .]
Yes.
Yes, I've got it.
Oh, I'm rich! Rich beyond my wildest dreams! Don't you think you'd better see what's inside before you count your profits? Yes, an excellent and practical suggestion.
Ahh! I've been deceived! Cheated! Looks like an oversized key ring to me.
It must do something.
I want a chest of jewels-- emeralds, rubies, diamonds.
Bring them to me! I think we've been on a wild goose chase, Dr.
Smith.
But it must serve some function.
The question is, how do we get it to operate? Who cares? Let's get back to the spaceship.
We still have work to do.
Very well.
I can unravel this mystery later.
There's probably a simple solution for this.
Perhaps it should be worn.
- Bring me gold.
- Psst! Where's the little girl? - Penny.
- She's asleep.
I couldn't get here any earlier.
Bolix might have seen me.
He was here today looking for you.
Let him look.
I found the perfect hiding place.
In a thousand years, he'll never find me.
- Then I suggest you stay there.
- I intend to.
But first I've got to talk to Penny.
- I gave her something to keep for me.
- You mean the disc? - [ Gasps .]
- How did you know? Please, uh, calm yourself.
Penny told me.
I presume by your attitude you want the disc back? Yes.
Go and get it for me.
Well-- - Something wrong? - No, no.
Nothing at all.
It's just that it's quite late.
I should hate to wake the child up.
Why don't you come back tomorrow? I'd gladly get it for you, but she's probably hidden it somewhere.
Very well.
Tomorrow, at the same time and you'd better have my property.
You may depend on me, sir.
At least now I have a little more time to fathom the puzzle of the metal ring.
[ Gasps .]
Ah.
Well.
[ Ring Clicks Shut .]
Well.
This will do until I have time to explore it further.
- [ Gasps .]
- Oh, Dr.
Smith.
Why, I thought you were already asleep.
No, no.
Just out enjoying a breath of fresh air.
Beautiful night, isn't it? Yes, it is.
It's like springtime back home.
Yes.
Did I hear you talking to someone earlier? No, no.
Just singing to myself.
# Ta da da da da ## - [ Both Chuckle .]
- Oh, what a lovely flower.
There.
[ Sniffs .]
Marvelous fragrance.
Smell.
- Oh, my, yes.
- I shall put it in some water and keep it in my quarters.
Good.
Well, Dr.
Smith, I'm going to bed and I advise you to do the same.
In a few moments, dear lady.
Sleep well.
You too, Dr.
Smith.
Seems to have lost its fragrance.
[ Gasps .]
Platinum.
It turned into platinum.
I've discovered the secret of the metal ring.
Platinum.
Oh, my.
Ah, greetings, my fellow space travelers.
What a glorious day.
- Good morning, Dr.
Smith.
- It is indeed a good morning.
The sun is shining.
The future is bright.
All is right with our world.
Well, you're certainly in good spirits this morning.
As always, dear lady.
Well, would you mind giving me a hand with this water conversion unit? I would be delighted, but my back is extremely delicate today.
- I'm literally famished.
- We finished breakfast hours ago.
Well, unfortunately, I overslept.
But no matter, I'm in time for lunch.
I know why you're so happy this morning, Dr.
Smith.
You discovered the secret to the metal ring.
- Penny! - Oh, I'm-- I'm sorry, Dr.
Smith.
- I just wasn't thinking.
- What metal ring, dear? I may as well tell everything.
Ohan gave me some sort of a disc to keep for him.
It was supposed to be the key to some sort of a treasure.
But all we found was a simple metal ring, completely without value.
Well, where is the ring now? It's around somewhere.
Would you like me to get it? Well, if it belongs to Ohan, yes, I think you should.
- He might come back for it.
- Yes, I suppose so.
Now, I wonder where I left it.
Ah, yes, in the garden.
Perhaps it would be best for me to go and get it now.
Suddenly, I really am not particularly hungry.
- Want me to help you look, Dr.
Smith? - No, no, Penny.
I know exactly where the ring is.
See you all later.
I wonder what's wrong with Dr.
Smith.
He certainly lost his appetite in a hurry.
Well, speaking from past experience I'd say he's up to some sort of mischief.
He had that look of, "Who me? I'm innocent.
" And that always spells trouble.
[ Growling .]
- Ah, Dr.
Smith.
- There you are, sir.
I've been looking all over for you.
And as you can see my search has been crowned with success.
To coin a phrase: I always find my man.
Congratulations.
Oh, please, sit down.
Sit down.
I shall have to make you a member of the Galaxy Law Enforcement Agency.
Excellent idea.
Officer Zachary Smith.
Yes.
It has a determined, honest ring to it.
Don't you think? All right, Dr.
Smith.
What can I do for you? Very well.
How would you like to take Ohan into custody? - Do you know where he is? - No.
But I know where he will be.
At our campsite at about 10:00 tonight.
Taking him prisoner should be a relatively simple matter.
You surprise me, Dr.
Smith.
I was under the impression that you were in sympathy with Ohan.
And you disappoint me, sir.
I gave you credit for much better judgment.
Now, according to my file, your past behavior hardly qualifies you as a-- as a model citizen.
Obviously then, your reports on my conduct are in error.
My character is of the highest.
All right.
I won't argue the point.
Right now I'm only interested in Ohan.
Now, you're sure he'll be at the campsite? Positive.
He told me so.
- I shall be there waiting for him.
- Excellent! And may I suggest that you come armed.
He might be dangerous.
Until later, sir.
Oh, by the way, Dr.
Smith.
Did you know that there was a reward out for Ohan's capture? The idea never occurred to me.
However, if a reward has been offered I should like the funds turned over to charity.
I will be more than paid with the knowledge that justice has prevailed.
Good day, sir.
It's after 10:00.
He should have arrived by now.
[ Gasps .]
I hear something.
You're nervous, Dr.
Smith.
Conscience bothering you? Certainly not.
Ohan is wanted by the law.
By helping you capture him, I'm doing my duty as a good citizen.
Surely you don't expect trouble.
You never know.
Some give up without a fight, others don't.
Now, listen, Dr.
Smith.
When Ohan arrives, I want you to go out there and meet him.
Be pleasant to him.
Get him to relax.
Then I'll take over.
Officer Bolix, wouldn't it be better if you went out first and I stayed here? Don't worry, Dr.
Smith.
I'll see to it that nothing happens to you.
Just do as I say.
- Psst! - That's him now.
You know what to do.
- But, Off-- - Go on, Dr.
Smith.
Oh, Mr.
Ohan, you're late.
I was beginning to worry.
There's something wrong.
I can feel it.
No, no, sir.
It's your imagination.
I assure you, we are quite alone.
- You have what I asked for? - Yes, right here in my pocket.
How have things been going for you? Well, I hope.
Never mind the conversation.
Give it to me.
By all means.
But surely you have a moment or two to spare to have a little chat.
You're deliberately stalling.
This is a trick.
Believe me, Mr.
Ohan.
Drop the club! You're under arrest! - You betrayed me! I'll-- - Stop, or I'll shoot! [ Screams .]
Help! Let me go! - [ Creatures Roaring .]
- Let me go! [ Dr.
Smith .]
Stop! Oh! - You all right, Dr.
Smith? - Oh, oh, yes.
I think so.
Good.
Take him away.
Thanks for your help, Dr.
Smith.
Glad to be of service, sir.
Well, Officer Bolix I should think this winds up your case.
I hope so.
Well, there's nothing more for me to do here.
If we don't see each other again, good luck.
Thank you, sir, and have a pleasant journey home.
The greatest treasure in the galaxy.
And now it's mine.
All mine.
I wonder where Dr.
Smith got it.
Well, that's exactly the question I intend to ask him.
Whoever made it, must be a genius.
It's perfect, down to the last detail.
Yes, if it wasn't platinum, I'd think it was a real flower.
It is real, Judy.
I picked it.
May I introduce myself, ladies.
Dr.
Zachary Smith-- the man with the platinum touch.
[ Chuckles .]
Observe.
[ Both .]
Oh.
You see, even stale bread would taste delicious when served on this plate, madam.
Well, Dr.
Smith it's certainly very nice, but, uh I prefer my dishes the way they are.
Besides, doesn't that ring belong to Ohan? I don't think he'll be coming back to claim it.
You know, when I have the time I must turn all of my eating utensils into platinum.
There.
No sooner said than done.
Would anyone else like to dine like an emperor? - No, thank you.
- I see.
Well, everyone to his own taste, I always say.
Dr.
Smith, your food, it's turned to platinum.
- Oh, dear.
- There must be something wrong.
Dr.
Smith, I think you'd better remove that ring.
Yes, of course.
Why didn't I think of that? - I can't seem to find the catch.
- Let me help you.
- Please, help me! - Wait.
Well, it's just a solid metal ring.
There is no catch.
There must be! It has to come off! - It must come off! - Just keep calm, please.
Now here.
Let me help you.
Uh, Judy, go see if you can find the metal cutters in the toolbox.
- All right.
I'll go look for them.
- Hurry! Oh, I don't like this! There is something very wrong! I don't like it! Don't tug at it, Dr.
Smith.
Now just-- Oh, Dr.
Smith.
Oh, no! No! It can't be true.
It isn't possible.
If you can't get the ring off, Dr.
Smith you won't be able to eat.
And if you can't eat-- I'll die? Oh, no! No! Well, we're all locked up for the night.
Dr.
Smith is locked out.
Isn't there anything we can do for him, Mom? I'm afraid not, dear.
But your dad will be back in a day or two, and I'm sure he'll know how to handle it.
[ Judy .]
But that time, it may be too late.
Poor Dr.
Smith.
I know, dear.
It hurts me too to see him out there.
He looks absolutely miserable.
Is it all right if I speak to him, Mom? Yes, of course, dear.
Go ahead.
Dr.
Smith? I thought you might like to speak to someone.
What is there to say? I'm in the depths of despondency.
Dr.
Smith, you mustn't give up hope.
For a doomed man, there is no hope only darkness and despair.
I am alone, shunned by all.
We'd like to let you come into the spaceship but, well, you understand, we just can't take the chance.
I quite understand.
Now, look.
You get a good night's sleep.
And perhaps tomorrow we'll be able to think of some way to help you.
- [ Dr.
Smith .]
I won't be here tomorrow.
- What? For the safety of all of you, I have decided to go out of your lives forever.
Like a wounded creature I shall go off into the wilderness to die.
Well, now that's nonsense.
You're to stay right here.
My mind is made up.
Farewell, dear friends.
Think of me sometimes.
Farewell.
Oh, don't go, Dr.
Smith! Oh, I just can't believe we'll never see Dr.
Smith again.
Please don't talk about it, Judy, or I'll cry.
Oh, I know how you feel.
Officer Bolix! Ah, that's an unusual-looking sleeping bag.
I've never seen one quite like it before.
- Platinum, isn't it? - [ Creature Grunts .]
When I ask a question, I expect an answer.
- Yes, it's platinum.
- That's better.
Thank you.
Now here's another question.
Where is the ring? [ Maureen .]
Dr.
Smith has it.
- Where is he? - I don't know.
He left here last night.
Oh, very conveniently so, wouldn't you say? Officer Bolix, I think you'd better explain to me what this is all about.
I'm not very good at guessing games.
Well, I am, Mrs.
Robinson.
It happens to be part of my occupation.
Why didn't you tell me you had the ring? You deliberately held back that information.
- That's not so.
- [ Penny .]
Mom knew nothing about it.
Ohan gave me some sort of a disc to keep for him.
I let Dr.
Smith have it.
We found the ring together.
And, uh, when you discovered the truth you realized how valuable it was, and decided to keep it for yourselves.
- Oh, you're completely wrong.
- But there was only one problem-- Ohan.
He represented a potential danger so you decided to betray him.
Well, we haven't seen him since he left here.
How could we betray him? Oh, Ohan tells quite a different story.
- What? - But, uh, let's skip that part for the moment.
Let us talk about Dr.
Smith.
Now, you say he's not here-- that he has the ring, but you don't know where he is.
At least you have that part right.
Oh, I'm delighted.
Now, let me ask you one more question.
Why did Dr.
Smith leave? Because he can't get the ring off his neck.
Everything he touches turns to platinum, even the sleeping bag.
- He isn't even able to eat.
- He left because he knew he was a danger to us.
And this is the story you expect me to believe? It's the truth.
Perhaps you'd like to think about that for a few moments, and after some reflections you might want to change your minds.
I'd have nothing different to tell you.
All right.
In that case, you're all under arrest.
- No.
- By the time we get back to the enforcement headquarters you may want to change your mind.
Well, you can't take us away from here.
My husband won't know where to find us.
You should have thought about that before you lied to me, Mrs.
Robinson.
- Come along.
- Officer Bolix, please believe me.
Everything I've told you has been the truth.
Now, you have only to find Dr.
Smith and see for yourself.
Oh, I'll find Dr.
Smith.
Don't you worry about that.
But first, I'm taking you all to headquarters.
No, I won't go with you.
I won't! - Never mind! - Penny! - Shall we go? - Judy.
Oh, dear.
[ Sobbing .]
Oh, dear.
[ Sobbing .]
Dr.
Smith! Dr.
Smith came this way.
Dr.
Smith? Dr.
Smith! Dr.
Smith, where are you? - Oh, thank goodness I found you.
- Stay away, Penny! Dr.
Smith, you've got to help us.
Officer Bolix has arrested Mom and Judy.
There's nothing I can do.
I'm a dying man.
But he's gonna take them away to the law enforcement headquarters on a different planet.
- I'm sorry, Penny.
- Officer Bolix thinks we lied to him.
He doesn't believe you can't get that ring off your neck and everything you touch turns to platinum.
It doesn't matter anymore.
I'm done for.
But if you go to Officer Bolix, and he sees we told the truth, he'll let Mom and Judy go.
Go away, Penny.
Leave me to die in peace.
- Oh, please! - No! Oh, no.
No! Penny, what have I done to you? [ Sobbing .]
Oh, no.
Believe me, this is just as unpleasant for me as it is for you.
Well, I seriously doubt that, Officer Bolix.
Now, under the circumstances, I have no alternative.
If you will tell me the truth-- I already have, and you won't believe me - so there's nothing more I can say.
- Look! Dr.
Smith! Oh, Dr.
Smith, I'm so glad to see you.
Where's Penny? Sir, you saved me the trouble of hunting you down.
You are to release these ladies at once.
Oh, I don't think you're in any position to give orders.
You're under arrest.
Mrs.
Robinson and her family had nothing to do with the metal ring.
I, and I alone, am responsible.
It's very noble of you to take the blame but you are wasting your time.
He thinks we lied to him, Dr.
Smith.
Officer Bolix, release my friends or I shall turn you into platinum.
Pla-- [ Chuckles .]
Dr.
Smith, I gave you credit for more intelligence than that.
Then I must prove it to you.
Now will you release them? Dr.
Smith, perhaps there is some kind of arrangement that we could make.
Officer Bolix, you and your animals will leave this planet at once never to return.
Mrs.
Robinson, you and Judy return to the Jupiter 2.
Oh, Dr.
Smith, please come back with us.
We'll find some way to get that ring off your neck.
I shall return to the wilderness.
It's a fit place for a creature like me.
- Dr.
Smith, where's Penny? - Where did you leave her? I haven't the courage to tell you.
Dr.
Smith, wait! Where is Penny? Oh, Penny, forgive me for what I've done.
Forgive me.
Oh, death, where is thy sting? [ Male Voice .]
Foolish, foolish man.
You had everything necessary for happiness and you gave it all up for what? A cold, unfeeling metal.
I know I deserve to be punished but not Penny.
The child is innocent.
She shouldn't have to suffer because of my folly.
[ Male Voice .]
You should have thought of that earlier.
I know, and now it's too late.
What a miserable wretch I am.
Perhaps you have learned a lesson, Dr.
Smith? Oh, I have.
I have.
Then, for once, I will make an exception.
I will spare you.
I don't care about myself.
It's only Penny I want saved.
Where are you? Where are you? Don't leave.
You've got to make Penny normal again! Oh.
I'm fine, Dr.
Smith.
Yes, dear.
Penny, you're alive! Oh, thank heavens! - I'm perfectly fine.
- Oh, my dear child, I've learned my lesson.
From now on, I'm going to be a changed man.
The old Dr.
Smith is gone, and I hope soon forgotten! I'm going to try to be the kind of man all of you want me to be! Dr.
Smith, the ring! it's gone out! What? What? Oh! And it has a catch! It will come off! Ah! I'm free! Saved! Alive! [ Maureen .]
Penny! Penny, oh! Oh, Penny.
Oh, I'm so glad you're all right.
- Penny.
- She's perfectly fine.
And Dr.
Smith has turned over a new leaf.
He's going to be a model citizen from now on.
- Yes, I am.
- Oh, that's wonderful, Dr.
Smith! Well, I think so too, but, uh, it's going to take a little effort.
But what about the ring? - There! - Don't you want it anymore? I've turned over a new leaf, my dear.
And I've learned that all that glitters is not gold.
And the same may be said for platinum.
[ Laughs .]
Come on now.
We'd better get back to the spaceship.
It's getting late.
Well, what have we here? Someone might as well have it.
And it might as well be me.
[ Narrator .]
In the meantime, some distance away the rest of our intrepid band of space colonists proceeds on a vital mission of their own searching for a new water supply to ensure the survival of the entire group.
It is a mission which will lead them directly into-- - Danger! Danger! - What is it? - I don't know.
What danger? - Volcano about to erupt.
[ Explosion .]
John, pull over, quick! - Danger! Danger! - Dad, it's getting closer! - Come on.
Let's get outta here! - Right.
- [ Robot .]
Lava approaching.
Lava approaching.
Lava approaching.
- He's right.
Look! - Come on.
Get us outta here.
- I can't! - Dad, what's the matter? It won't start.
We're stuck! [ Will .]
Look out!
