[GAWAIN] Were you a good girl
while we were away?
[MARIE]

[gasps]

[breathing steadily]

[baby coos]

it's something real
and either you just forgot,
or you've never
heard of it before?
I don't claim
to know about everything
but I'm well-educated
and not forgetful.

If it does happen to exist,
it certainly isn't
common knowledge.
Shion,
where did you learn
of such things
as monsters, fairies,
and this so-called "magic?"
[whimpers]

Shion never mentioned

Just before the sun goes down,
these balls of light
float into the sky.
Couldn't tell you why, though.
[SHION] Have you told Mother
and Father about this?

As soon as I found it,
I brought them out here to see
but something strange happened.
They couldn't see
the lights at all.
I was scared you might
have the same problem.
[SHION] Maybe
it's not meant for adults.
[MARIE]
Except there were kids
who weren't able
to see it either.
It seems like it looks
different to everyone.
To me, the lights blink in
and out of sight
but a few kids saw
something steadier.
-How mysterious.
-Got that right.
It is.
Something from nothing.
-Like magic, right?

Magic!
Remember what you told us?
About how it can pull light
out of thin air and stuff?
This has to be the same thing!

I don't have a great memory

where the balls of light
come from.

they come out of the water.
We're on the same page
but they might be coming from
something that
lives in the water.
If we don't
properly investigate
where they come from,
then we'll never know
what those orbs are.
Ugh, fine.
I didn't think that
magic meant research,
but you gotta do
what you gotta do.
Where should we start, smartie?
Let's fill
each of these buckets up
with a decent
bit of lake water.
[MARIE]

[SHION]
One will get sand and rocks.
One will get some plants
and in the last one
we'll add a couple of fish.
I can wrangle that stuff!
I don't really get
what it's for,
but I'm glad to help!
[both chuckle softly]
I guess we're not fishermen.
[Shion laughs]
Is our lack of skills
so funny to you?
No, I'm just happy
that we're here together.
That's it.
In what messed-up world
would we be apart?

I suppose this means
we haven't made our buckets
very accurate
recreations of the lake.
There must be more than
just those etten trout
swimming around in the water.

there are other fishies.
A countless number of species
could call
our lustrous lake home.
You can't catch them all
if you don't know
how many there are.

It's too dangerous!
[SHION]

[breathes heavily]
[ROSE]

And in a strange way,
it sort of tickles.

to see very deep.

one thing we know for sure.
The orbs are being produced
by something that
lives down there,
and I don't think it's a plant.
It looks to be
some sort of organism
that can move around.
How can you possibly
tell that much?
The spots where the lights
come from are moving.
But I have no idea
which creature
is responsible for that.
It would be easy to guess
if we could see.

a female etten trout.

Males are way more common.
The females tend to live
deeper in the water.
So they're much rarer to catch.
[ROSE] Correct, but they come
to the shallows
in spawning season.

are catching them lately.
[Shion gasps]
[ROSE]
The orbs of light!
They're coming from the trout!

They're beautiful.

That makes perfect sense.

It's courting behavior.
The balls of light are
the etten trout's
courtship display!
So, it's their
courting behavior?

It's the way a male fish
tells a female fish
they want to get married
and become a family.
[MARIE]

Shion and I are already family.

We don't need

Shion is clearly the male
and I'm obviously the female.

a courtship display!
Ah!
[whimpering]
[door bangs shut]

Magical energy is real.
Magic may not
exist in this world
but that's only
because the techniques
and framework haven't
been created yet.
This life is starting
to get fun.
The first chapter of my story
is just beginning!
I have been reincarnated
into this world
and now I'm going
to make magic!
