MasterChef Junior (2013) s07e07 Episode Script

Junior Edition Camp MasterChef

- Announcer: Previously - Ivy: Oh, my God, cupcakes! What do you think of my new dress? You're so pretty.
a difficult baking challenge Get those cupcakes in those boxes! Careful, careful, careful, careful.
- had a fairy tale ending.
- Wow.
Incredible.
Stunning.
A-plus.
That's a dynamite cupcake.
Tonight, you were all seriously good.
Too good to send home.
You're safe.
Tonight ( playing "Reveille" ) ( horn honking ) the top 14 head to the great outdoors for their toughest team challenge yet.
Our campers are arriving! - They're coming, they're coming! - We need chicken now! It's like a tie-dye tidal wave coming over us.
Who will hit the mark? It looks gorgeous! Great job.
And whose MasterChef Junior dream will go up in smoke? It's raw.
You'll send those children to hospital in seconds.
( playing "Reveille" ) ( Aarón groans ) ( "Reveille" continues ) Coming, coming! Kids: Camp! Camp! Camp! Camp! ( horn honking ) Che: It feels great to still be top 14.
It means nobody went home in the last challenge.
The fact that they didn't eliminate anybody just goes to show how this group of kids are so talented.
Kyle: Oh, this is so cool! I am so happy to be out of the kitchen.
It's so scenic and beautiful.
There are trees and mountains.
I'm really excited for what's gonna come next.
- ( horn honking ) - ( cheering ) Kid: Whoa! Christina: We're here.
- Off the bus.
- ( cheering ) - Whoa! - Oh, my God, it's camp! - Whoo! - Let's go, guys! ( laughs ) Look at Aarón.
- Hey, hey! - Good to see you.
Good morning.
Christina: Good morning! - Come on.
- Oh, man.
Welcome, all of you, to the amazing MasterChef Kids Camp.
( cheering ) Kids come here to have fun, play sports, and build great wilderness skills.
There are a lot of campers here today and you will be cooking lunch for all of them.
Aaron: What? This is not going to be easy.
We are cooking for for not normal people, but kids.
Oh, my God! What do kids like? Oh, God, I should know.
I should know this.
Now, Jaala and Malia, since you both won that incredible cupcake challenge last week, today you are both our team captains.
( cheering ) Please, come and join us up here.
Kyle: Right now the team captains are evenly matched.
I've seen many leadership qualities out of both of them.
Jaala, she's fair, she's honest, and Malia is a really strong cook.
Since you two won the cupcake challenge together, it's only fair we flip a coin to see who gets to pick first.
All right, Jaala, you're the red side.
- Okay.
- And, Malia, blue side.
Red team.
Jaala, that means you will have first choice of your team.
Jaala: My strategy is I'm definitely gonna pick people that are strong, talented.
I'm gonna pick people that have been very kind and nice to me.
This person is very, very amazing with their cooking.
- Aaron.
- Gordon: Well done.
Aaron: There are a lot of good home cooks here, but now that I've been picked first, I really have to do the best that I can do to show the judges that I'm worthy.
Now, Malia, where are you going first? I'm picking this person because stress doesn't get to them.
- Evie.
- Gordon: Evie, wow.
Come over, darling.
Evie: Right after the duck challenge, people are starting to notice my skill.
And that scares me, because I have to keep up this good work.
If I do one thing wrong, I could be sent home.
This person is very thoughtful and they show a lot of respect.
- Che.
- Gordon: Che, let's go, buddy.
- Rhashad.
- Gordon: Rhashad.
- Love it.
- Thank you.
- Kyle.
- Gordon: Kyle, wow.
Let's go, buddy.
- Ivy.
- Gordon: Ivy.
- Good choice.
- Sadie.
Sadie, welcome to the red team.
- Thank you.
- Ben.
- Gordon: Ben.
Let's go, buddy.
- Brielle.
- Gordon: Brielle.
- Aarón: Awesome.
- Thank you.
- Matthew.
- Gordon: Matthew.
- Thank you so much, Malia.
- Reid.
- Gordon: Reid, let's go.
That means Kate is gonna be on the blue team.
Well done, Kate.
Excellent.
I feel awesome that I got picked on Jaala's team, because there's all these strong people.
Yeah, I'm really confident that we're gonna hit it out of the park.
Now, red team, blue team, you ready to find out what you'll be working with today? All: Yes, Chef! Let's take a look.
Today, you will be serving all of the campers a dish featuring an ingredient that is a summertime staple.
Uh Chicken.
Now, both teams will have to serve 51 campers.
When a camper comes up to the kitchen, they'll get a dish from each team.
The team with the most votes will win the challenge.
Unfortunately, the losing team will have to face a pressure test back in the MasterChef kitchen.
And today there's an extra special prize at stake.
Because the winner of today's challenge will get the huge opportunity to share their recipe around the country.
Because the recipe of today's winning team will be featured in "Family Circle Magazine.
" ( cheering ) That's right.
"Family Circle Magazine" is America's best-selling food and family magazine, reaching millions of readers each month.
Sadie: Julia Child, I don't even think she had one of her recipes published at age 12.
So, I really want to win this.
Today's winning dish will be featured in "Family Circle's" June issue.
Are both teams ready? All: Yes, Chef! Your time starts - now.
- ( whistle blows ) - Let's go, guys.
Guys, guys.
- Come on, get started.
- Get started.
- Let's go, red team! We could do fried chicken, barbecue chicken.
We could do, like, a balsamic chicken.
I think the barbecue chicken idea is the best.
Yeah, barbecue chicken's definitely the best.
If we want greens on their plates, we could do green beans or something like that.
No kids really like vegetables on a summer day.
- Good point.
- Aaron: Children don't like vegetables.
Have you ever seen a child eating asparagus? They don't get along well.
We should do it with sautéed potatoes that we should put in the oven.
- Yes! - Che: With corn.
- Corn, corn.
Yeah, do corn.
- Oh, corn with barbecue.
Yes! - Okay, red team.
- Yeah.
- Let's roll, baby! - Red team on three.
- Red team on three.
- One, two, three, red team! - Whoo! - Go, go, go, come on.
Jaala: The red team is making grilled barbecue chicken with roasted potatoes and chipotle buttered corn.
I'm actually really excited.
Kids love barbecue chicken.
What do you guys think about fried chicken? I think fried chicken, because every kid likes fried chicken.
- Yeah.
- Kate: I'm from the South, so I know how to make some mad fried chicken.
This is gonna be one of the best lunches ever made in the whole universe.
- How about we do Swiss chard? - Yes! - Of course.
- Yeah.
Okay, guys.
I wanna do baked beans.
Baked beans.
People don't like beans.
- Beans - Everybody likes beans.
Who wants to eat beans and Swiss chard at summer camp? Personally, I would not want to eat beans and greens.
- So, does everyone know what we're doing? - Yes.
- On three, blue team.
- One, two, three, blue team! - Whoo! - Go! Go! Go! Malia: Blue team is making fried chicken, bacon barbecue beans, some cornbread, and some Swiss chard.
I'm pretty happy with the menu, and I know that we're gonna do great.
Wow.
Big team challenge today.
Seven young home cooks per team.
They're cooking 51 chicken dishes.
We chose the chicken leg and the chicken thigh.
It's a gorgeous two cuts of chicken.
- Not easy to work with, not easy to cook well.
- Sure.
Yeah, tough one.
I mean, undercooked drums, undercooked thighs, dangerous.
The secret of today's cook-off is in the temperature of that chicken.
- How's it looking, Reid? - Looking good.
Really good.
But think about a beautiful canvas like chicken.
It can absorb so many different marinades, sauces, big flavors.
- That's what these kids will gravitate towards.
- Christina: Absolutely.
They're cooking for their contemporaries, so these dishes need to speak to 8 to 12-year-olds.
- You think it's ready? - Oh, that's perfect.
Yeah.
Gordon: We want some finesse.
MasterChef quality throughout.
Yeah.
( cheering ) Red team, blue team, our campers are arriving.
Wait, the guest are arriving? What? Campers, welcome to the MasterChef Junior camp.
Please enjoy the activities.
They're coming, they're coming.
I'm feeling flustered.
It's like a tie-dye tidal wave coming over us.
Like, what? What should I start doing? Malia, please talk to me.
I am taking a deep breath.
( panting ) Okay, start helping us plate, okay? - Okay.
- Go, go, go! Guys, ten minutes until our campers sit down.
Chicken coming up.
Jaala, are you confident - that chicken's cooked through? - Um, yes.
- Che: Are you sure that's cooked? - Reid: Yes.
Che: This is a very difficult dish to pull off.
There's two pieces of chicken per plate.
You make a 102 pieces of chicken.
The quantity is insane.
Right, who cooked this? The chicken was Reid and Che.
The chicken's raw.
Look.
See that? - That's not good.
- No, that's not cooked.
Jaala: The chicken was raw.
There's perfect potatoes, perfect corn, but raw chicken.
Red team, all of you come here.
Line up quickly.
- Oh, crap.
- Yes, Chef? That's not funny.
Inside it's raw.
You'll send those children to hospital in seconds.
Sadie: I thought Reid was gonna do really well.
He's been grilling chicken since he was, like, five.
If red team doesn't get it together, we could face the dreaded pressure test and none of us want to go home.
Red team, you're gonna lose if you don't get it together.
Red team, that's not funny.
Inside it's raw.
You'll send those children to hospital in seconds.
You need to reorganize your team.
Whoever's cooking the chicken needs to own it.
- The rest of you focus.
Let's go, guys.
- Yes, Chef.
- That's terrible.
- Everyone, can we have a quick huddle over here? - Yes, Chef! - Dear, oh, dear.
Kids are here to eat, not to die, okay? - kids: Yes.
- This is unacceptable.
Once you're done grilling the chicken, finish it off in the oven.
- Put it on a tray, finish it off in the oven.
- Yep, yep.
- Guys, bounce back from this.
- Okay, everyone, get back to your stations.
Okay, we got this.
These kids, they didn't come here to get sick.
They came here to have the best meal of their life! And that's what we're gonna make for them.
Open oven.
Let's go.
Turn up that oven temperature.
- All right.
- Whoo.
( cheering, chattering ) Lunch time, girls and boys! Come and get it! We need some more chicken, guys.
- Go! - All right! Good.
Come on, guys.
We got this.
Gordon: Right, red team, blue team, we are now live.
Start serving lunch for our happy campers.
- Let's go! - Guys, we have kids waiting! We need chicken now! I'm trying, Jaala.
Jaala's yelling at me, and I'm getting frustrated because chicken takes a long time to do.
I'm the one who cooks on the grill and gets my hands dirty.
You wanna take my job? Go ahead.
Jaala, can we serve these campers? - Not right now, Chef.
- We don't have any chicken for you.
Please, to the blue team.
I'm sorry about that.
Thank you for understanding.
Jaala: We're losing votes right now.
This is, like, totally embarrassing.
I thought this team that I picked has what it takes, but right now the corn and potatoes are the only things on the plate.
Guys, about ten kids just left.
- Just about ten kids.
We lost ten people right now.
- Dang! How are you, bud? Please, enjoy.
Sorry about the red team.
Enjoy the chicken.
Good to see you, guys.
Ivy: Come on, you guys can come.
We have food.
And trust me, it was worth the wait.
Malia: Hey, guys, we have some fried chicken with barbecue beans, Swiss chard, and some cornbread.
- Thank you.
- Ben: This will make your day, guys.
I think the blue team is doing a really good job.
Everything's coming together the way it should be.
So I think we're gonna do great.
- Everyone doing well? - Yeah.
What are you guys thinking about the fried chicken lunch? - It's awesome! - It's delicious.
What do you guys like about it? I like the chicken.
I liked how had a little crisp to it.
- Yep.
- And I liked the cornbread.
- It's also very juicy.
- Awesome.
Okay, enjoy your lunch.
- Thank you! - Yum! I need another sheet tray.
- It'll be okay.
- Let me concentrate! Don't get upset.
Pretend you're back in Georgia.
It's okay, it's okay.
We're grilling.
This is your favorite thing to do.
I need another raising rack right now! Calm down, Reid.
Kyle: Reid's getting really stressed out.
I'm really nervous because I feel like we're really in a rush, but I know that we can't undercook any of this chicken.
- Reid, how are you feeling? - Not good, so You're not feeling well? What's wrong, buddy? I'm scared that they're all gonna be raw.
- ( crying ) - We have not served a single person a raw piece of chicken, okay? - Yes, ma'am.
- And why haven't we done that? Because I've been grilling 'em and 'Cause you're not gonna let a piece of raw chicken go out.
- Right? - Yes, ma'am.
Hey, taking this seriously is important.
We're a little bit behind, but it's not over yet.
You can still turn this around.
What's the most important thing we do right now? Cook the chicken good and give it to the campers.
That's right.
Okay? - Yes, ma'am.
- You keep your eye on that prize.
Let's check on that chicken.
- You can do this, Reid! - Okay, let's go.
You open that oven, I'll pull it out.
Here we go.
They are sizzling.
- They are looking good.
- Thank you, Chef.
Let's check this out.
What do you think? I think it's cooked.
It's cooked, right? It's a dark piece of meat, - and it looks gorgeous.
- Great job, Reid! Let's go.
Get up there, bud.
You got it.
Reid, you got this.
Great job.
- See? That chicken's cooked.
- There you go.
- That's right, bud.
- Make room for Reid, guys.
- Make room for Reid.
- Let's go! Red team, let's turn it around.
Here we go.
Thank you, Reid.
Good job.
Finally, Reid, we have a tray of chicken.
We can start feeding these kids and giving them the best barbecue chicken that they've ever had.
Hey, guys! Hope you like it.
Jaala: You have a barbecue chicken with a chipotle corn and roasted potatoes.
- Enjoy your lunch! - Thank you.
Gordon: Here you go, bud.
Enjoy.
Nice, you got it? - We need more chicken! - Okay.
- I'm done.
- Oh, beautiful! We got this! We have ten of them right here already.
- Here you go.
- Thank you.
( chattering ) Hey, guys, what's going on? What? That's not even close, my friend.
I'm sorry about that.
I got you taken care of, okay? One second.
We need some chicken, guys.
We need some chicken over here.
- This is not even close, guys.
- Oh, no.
Blue team! All of you, now.
- Yes, Chef.
- Look at that.
If I had feathers in my pocket, I'd stick this back in its pen.
Look how raw that is.
And do you know why? There's no structure.
There's no teamwork.
And it's like we are destined to lose.
Are they all raw? Oh, boy.
- Oh, no.
Oh, man.
- Oh, my gosh! I don't know what to say.
Take your aprons off.
Untie your aprons.
Give me your aprons, all of you.
- Take your aprons off.
- No, Chef! - Take your aprons off.
- No, Chef.
- Untie your aprons.
- No, Chef.
I can't believe we just served raw chicken to campers.
Like, this could mean so much for the blue team.
- This is not good.
- Look at me.
- Can we get it together? - All: Yes, Chef.
More of this? I'll take everybody's apron.
- Understood? - All: Yes, Chef.
- For the bear.
- Okay, guys, we need to make sure that our chicken is cooked, okay? - Yes, Chef! - Malia: I'm team captain and I really have to step it up.
In the oven, in the oven, in the oven.
I need to make sure that that chicken is not raw, so it either needs to be in the oven longer or the fryer longer.
We need five drumsticks, one thigh.
Did you guys check those if they're ready? - Let me check now.
- They're beautiful.
Let's go! Let's go! Let's go! Let's go! Ben: Raw chicken went out to a camper.
So I think we need to slow down, make sure it's cooked, and make sure all the dishes come out perfect, or else we're done.
Christina: Blue team, pull it together.
Here we go.
Who preferred the red team? Raise your hand.
Wow.
So I don't even have to ask about the blue.
Drums coming, right here.
Reid: Okay! Those look beautiful.
That's looking much better, Jaala.
- Much better.
- Vote for red team! Aaron: This was a bumpy ride.
Maybe we started off slow, but it's not about how you started it, it's about how you finish it.
I'm voting for red team because I like the chicken and I like the corn, and I don't really like the beans on the blue team.
Blue team, final plates.
I like the blue team 'cause the chicken was really tender and juicy, and the cornbread was really sweet.
I'm gonna edit them to make sure they're our best quality yet.
- Come on, guys, come on.
- Are those cooked? - Yes, yes, yes.
- Okay.
Boys and girls, please come up and vote.
Is it the red team or the blue team? - Let's go, guys.
- Vote red team! ( cheering ) Today I'm gonna be voting for the red team.
Last couple, red team.
Let's go.
- Keep it going, Jaala.
Let's go.
- How was your day? Kyle: I'm really happy because we didn't get any of our dishes sent back.
We finished strong, and I feel like we have a very good shot at winning this.
- I'm voting for the blue team.
- Christina: Let's go.
Finish this strong, blue team.
I think I'm voting for red.
The chicken tastes really good with the seasoning.
Blue team's fried chicken is juicy and tasty.
It's worth being last.
That's gonna be the best one.
Malia: The last plate goes out, I'm like, I'm feeling pretty good.
Hopefully, we win this challenge.
Who likes the red team better? Raise your hand.
Who likes the blue team? Raise your hand.
Awesome.
So we got a little 3-2 mix here.
( cheering ) Right.
Right, boys and girls! Listen up.
Did you all enjoy your lunch? All: Yes! Good.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Now, please, give it up for the most amazing 14 talented young home cooks who made all your lunch today.
The red team and the blue team.
( cheers and applause ) Now, both teams did an amazing job, but this is a competition, and only one team can be the winner.
Unfortunately, the losing team will have to face the dreaded pressure test back in the MasterChef kitchen.
And the winning team is the red team! ( cheering ) ( screaming ) Congratulations, red team! Well done! - Well done, red team! - Aarón: Yeah! Oh, my God! We won! Our recipe is going in the "Family Circle Magazine.
" This is awesome! Mom, I'm gonna be an author! Blue team, unfortunately, I think you know what that means.
You have to face the pressure test back in the MasterChef kitchen.
Please, all of you on the blue team, head over there and start cleaning down your kitchen.
Malia: I think that the blue team lost because we served raw chicken, which is our star dish, and lack of communication and teamwork.
It's pretty hard not to take it personally because I'm a competitive person.
- It's okay, guys.
- We all did our best.
That's what matters.
We all did our best.
Red team, before we head back to the MasterChef kitchen, I think it's time to have a bit of fun.
- ( cheering ) - Let's do a celebratory ride down the red slide.
Go, Jaala, go! - ( cheering ) - Whoo! Che, Che, Che! Let's go.
I am so happy to be on the Slip 'N Slide right now.
I mean, we earned it.
We executed the dish wonderfully.
Gordon: Go, guys, go! Whoa! We made good food, and the campers liked it.
( cheering ) Yeah! ( cheering, laughing ) Welcome back, guys.
Make your way down to the front, please, and put on those black aprons.
Malia: The blue team lost, and I feel like since I'm the team captain that it's all my fault that we have to go into the pressure test.
It's pretty hard not to take it personally, because I'm a competitive person.
I do competitive dance and competitive soccer.
But all I know, is you got into this mess and you try to get out.
Every camper ate both teams' dishes, and ultimately they decided that the red team's food was the best.
Now, there is no tougher challenge in this kitchen than a pressure test.
Christina: That's right.
Tonight's challenge will feature an ingredient that can be part of a healthy diet, but it can also be used in some very indulgent dishes.
It is - ( shouting ) - coconut! Oh, my gosh! Oh, no! I just got my hair done! Gotcha.
Oh, my God, it hurts! It's raining coconut in the MasterChef kitchen.
- It came down my shirt.
- Ivy.
You've got a coconut tower on top of that hat.
- Whoa.
- ( Gordon chuckles ) There are so many things that you can make with coconut.
Its slightly sweet flavor makes it an excellent secret weapon for any baker.
Tonight will be all about conquering delicious coconut cream pie.
- Yay! - Yes! ( cheering ) A buttery flakey pie crust, dense, creamy chocolate pastry cream.
- Oh, my gosh! - It looks so good.
Coconut whipped cream on top, and of course, toasted coconut flakes.
Mmm! It's so good! Aarón: All of you, head to your stations, please.
- Bye, coconut.
- We got this, guys.
Rhashad: I really love coconut when I go to the Bahamas, but I never cooked with coconut.
I never made pastry cream.
So I am just trusting in my instincts - and what my heart says.
- All right, home cooks, at your stations you have everything you need to make us a delicious coconut cream pie.
You'll have just 75 minutes to make us a flawless replication.
At the end of this challenge, we'll have to say good-bye to at least two of you.
- Ready? - All: Yes, Chef! Your 75 minutes starts - now.
- Reid: Come on, guys! I'm watching you like a hawk.
- Here, Matthew, let me help.
- Thank you, Rhashad.
I make pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving with my mom, but I've never made a coconut cream pie.
I guess this is gonna be a nice learning experience.
Come on, Malia.
- You got this.
- Thank you.
I learned how to bake pies by watching both of my great-grandmothers.
I'm nervous, but I'm quite confident in myself that I'm not leaving tonight.
In Florida I pick coconuts from the beach from what's fallen from the trees.
I made pies with my cousins and with my mom.
So, I'm feeling really confident.
I'm not going home tonight.
Christina, coconut cream pie, an iconic American classic.
A lot could go wrong.
What do they need to nail? Christina: Their pie dough, first and foremost.
Taking that cold butter, cutting it into the dry ingredients.
While the pie dough's resting, these home cooks need to start working on that chocolate pastry cream.
It needs to be thick enough to hold its shape.
Whisk, whisk, whisk, guys.
And then that coconut whipped cream.
Light, fluffy, but not whipped so much that it starts to curdle and turn to butter.
The toast of coconut on top of that cream pie for me is like the pièce de résistance.
But it's in the layering of this pie and its individual ingredients that's going to let us know who still has what it takes to become America's next MasterChef.
Just under 50 minutes remaining.
Right, Matthew.
How many times have you baked pies? I baked pies I think about five times in my life.
Hold on.
You've baked five pies in your life.
- Yes.
- Remind me, how old are you again? I'm eight years old.
- Young man.
- Yeah? - Are you staying or you going? - I'm staying.
Let's go.
Get that in the oven.
Matthew, you did it like a professional! - Miss Evie.
- Yes, Chef.
I've seen some great things out of you in this kitchen.
Are you a big baker? I love to bake.
It's one of the things that I really like to do to de-stress.
How do you even know what stress is? - You're 11 years old.
- I have a lot of homework.
You have a lot of homework.
One thing, word to the wise, Miss Evie.
That pastry crust is not done baking until it has a nice golden brown color to it.
Okay? You've got a clear dish.
Look at it from the bottom before you decide it is done baking in full, okay? - Make me proud.
- Thank you.
Good luck.
Just over 30 minutes to go, guys.
- Guys, you can do this! - At this point, there are so many elements working on each home cook's stations.
The crusts are about halfway baked.
You've got pastry cream that's either thickening or cooling, and then a coconut whipped cream on their stand mixers.
These home cooks are managing four different elements of this pie at the same time.
Gordon: And every step is crucial.
We can't fix it at the end.
Uh-oh.
- What happened to Rhashad's pastry cream? - He used the heavy cream - and the milk for the pastry cream.
- Aarón: Oh.
- So it's gonna be super liquidy.
- Oh, dear.
The heavy cream jar is for the whipped cream.
- Rhashad.
- Yes, Chef.
Quick question.
'cause we've got our whipping cream in here.
Oh.
I added heavy cream and milk.
The whipping cream is for what? - The coconut whipped cream.
- That's right.
- And the milk is for? - The pastry cream.
That's right.
We can't continue to work with the mistake.
We have to stop, think, adjust, and more importantly, nail every sector of this.
Pastry cream on, let's go.
I can't do it for you.
- Yes, Chef.
- Now, 75 minutes for a professional pastry chef - Yes? - That's hard.
- Yes, it is.
- Remind me, how old are you again? I am 12 years old.
You're not ready to leave the competition are you? I am not even close.
I feel very good about this and you guys are gonna be blown away.
- I love that confidence.
- Yes, Chef.
- Let's go.
- Oh, my gosh.
- Come on, guys! - Hey, Kate, what's shaking? - I just got done with my whipped cream.
- Cool.
Do you make pies at home? I make apple pie and peach pie with my nana - at least, like, once a month maybe.
- You know what? There's nothing like making pies with your grandma, no? - I mean, they know best, so - I'm telling you.
So do you feel like you have a good grasp on everything? I feel like I'm one of the front-runners, because I am a baker.
All right, good luck.
Gordon: Ten minutes to go, guys.
Speed up, start thinking about your presentation.
You have to start filling your pastry.
Guys, who do you think has cooked for the last time - inside of the MasterChef kitchen? - This pains me to say this, - but I think Rhashad.
- Rhashad is having huge problems with his cream.
He's doing it again for the third time now.
He needs to focus.
Watching Ben this evening, I'm slightly worried.
Pastry looked a little bit unevenly rolled, which, you know, causes all sorts of inconsistencies.
Christina: I'm worried about Kate.
She has the pastry prowess, but she's behind on time, and I worry it's gonna be a mess.
- Whoa! - Gordon: Five minutes to go.
You should start to assemble your pie.
Now for the pie assembly line.
Look, Rhashad's caught back up.
He's not even using a piping bag.
He's just using a palette knife and going straight in there.
You have to be super careful.
That pastry is brittle.
If that crust snaps, it's game over.
( gasps ) My rim fell off.
Five minutes to go.
You should start to assemble your pie.
Now, you have to be super careful.
That pastry is brittle.
If that crust snaps, it's game over.
( gasps ) My rim fell off.
- Look at Evie's pie crust.
- Yeah, I know.
It fell apart.
Oh, great.
Are you serious right now? Oh, my gosh.
Why is this happening to me? My rim fell off.
For my crust to break right now, like, that's terrible! Evie, let's have a look, shall we? - The rim fell off.
- Okay.
I don't have enough time to redo a crust because this one's broken.
- Be very, very gentle with it.
- It's hot.
Gordon: There you go.
Okay.
Che: It's not gonna be the prettiest pie.
It's gonna taste good, though.
I'm a little worried this is not gonna pull me through.
I'll just do a lot of whipped cream.
Aarón: Come on, guys.
Nice height, a beautiful dome of cream.
Doing a thick layer.
Reid: Come on, Rhashad.
That looks really good.
Kyle: Final stretch of time! - You can do this! - Last minute remaining.
- Come on, guys, let's go.
- Let's do it! - Christina: Come on, home cooks! - ( cheering ) - Come on, guys.
- 30 seconds to go.
- Aarón: Come on, y'all.
- Come on, guys, finishing touches.
- Perfect.
- Aarón: A nice consistent layer of garnish, guys.
It shouldn't be clumped on.
Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
- Stop.
Hands in the air.
- And that's it! - All right, guys! - ( cheering ) - Good job, everybody! - Well done.
All right, everyone, carefully bring your pies up.
Baking back home in Atlanta is very different than a pressure test.
I didn't have enough time to redo a crust, but hopefully, I'm crossing my fingers that it's not too bad for the judges.
Malia, let's start off with you.
Malia, visually, it looks beautiful.
It's the kind of pie that'll sit on the top shelf of any great pastry shop.
I think you've got the crimping beautifully done here.
Love the mound that you've lifted up there.
- Thank you.
- But is your pie cooked underneath? - Um, yes, Chef.
- Let's have a look, shall we? Malia Mm-hmm.
it's cooked perfectly.
- Thank you.
- Let's get in there, shall we? Ratio of pastry cream to whipped cream is what? Pastry cream is two-thirds and whipped cream is one-third.
That's the right ratio.
Beautifully done.
Mmm.
Mm-mm.
Pastry cream oozes chocolate.
It's smooth and it's super rich.
Young lady, you've raised the bar.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
- Good job, Malia.
- Great job, Malia.
- Rhashad.
- Yes, Chef.
- You made three chocolate pastry creams tonight.
- Yes.
Is there anything in this chocolate pastry cream that you're worried about? Just making sure that the pie is delicious.
You actually did a pretty good job baking it.
I see very few little translucent pockets.
You toasted your coconut beautifully on top.
Not too light, not too dark.
Yes.
Coconut cream, it's a little over-whipped.
It's starting to separate a little bit.
Your chocolate cream, if you whisk it too much, too heavily, it aerates it, and that takes away from that dense, dark rich chocolate flavor.
But I'm very impressed by the way that you stuck with it tonight.
- Yes, Chef.
- Thank you.
It's okay, Rhashad.
Good job.
Matthew, how do you feel about your pie, buddy? I think overall I did a pretty darn good job.
I'm hearing that beautiful crust and that crunch, and that audible sort of sign that it's been cooked enough.
Wow! Look at that, buddy.
Mmm.
I like your pie crust.
It has good flavor.
It's well-seasoned.
You went over the top with the amount of chocolate, which I love.
I think the one lackluster part of your pie is that coconut cream could use a little bit more whipping.
I would like it more fluffy.
But other than that, good job, young man.
Good job, Matthew.
Okay, Ben.
Visually, the pastry looks a little bit too thick.
Why's it so thick? Because usually when I roll pastry too thin, it starts cracking and getting holes and translucent.
So I didn't want that to be the problem.
Oh, dear.
- Can you see those creases? - Yes.
- That's not gonna be cooked.
- Mm-hmm.
Oh, dear, oh, dear.
Mmm.
The pastry, it tastes good.
A little bit too thick, but the chocolate pastry cream, delicious.
The whipped cream, slightly over-whipped by ten seconds.
- Yes, Chef.
- That's all it needs to be to start separating.
Thank you.
Now, Miss Kate, is this what a pie looks like when it comes out of your oven at home? Um, not usually.
I think I could've done the crimping a little better - and it shrunk a little bit.
- It did.
You didn't let that pie crust rest for long enough, which is why it started to weigh down in on itself.
You didn't add enough chocolate pastry cream.
It's almost only a coconut whipped cream pie.
Well, at the end, I was just trying to make sure that I had a pie to present.
Time management was a challenge for you.
- Yes, Chef.
- It's too heavy.
The crust has weighed itself in and so it's underbaked.
There's not enough of that chocolate pastry cream, and there's way too much of that coconut cream.
I've seen some amazing things come off of your station.
But, Kate, this is nowhere near the level of work - that I know that you're capable of.
- Yes, Chef.
Miss Ivy, how do you feel you did? I think I did pretty great, considering it was my first time making a coconut cream pie.
Hmm.
The reason that the cream's kind of falling down it needs to be whipped more, so it's a little stiffer in the peaks.
Let's see how the flavor delivers.
Yes.
Mmm.
Your pie crust is cooked all the way on the bottom.
Your chocolate pastry cream is delicious.
You have a lot of compelling flavors on your coconut cream pie that make me wanna have another bite.
- Good job.
- Thank you.
- Good job, Ivy.
- Awesome.
Evie, what was the hardest part tonight? Honestly, dealing with the crust falling off.
Visually, you know it doesn't look the prettiest of pies, right? No, it does not.
How long did you cook the pastry for? For about 11 minutes blind baking - and then about 10 to 11 minutes.
- Oh, dear.
'Cause it should be 12 and 12.
Around the 24-25 minute mark is the average time that pie crust should take to cook.
Yeah, I'm struggling to get that from the bottom.
It's not coming off.
Oh, Evie.
Oh, my gosh.
Uh, the pastry is undercooked, but I'm all about flavor, okay? Let's get in there.
Mmm.
Here's the thing, young lady.
Your pastry cream is delicious.
It tastes really nice and rich, just super smooth, but, unfortunately, your pastry is undercooked.
And, sadly, your cream is over-whipped.
Not a good evening.
Thank you.
Oh, dear.
Evie: I know how to make a pretty good pie, but tonight was not my night.
Ay-yi-yi.
Tough night.
- Wow.
- I'm crossing my fingers that I can stay in this competition.
So, seven of you stand before us, we sadly have to say good-bye to at least two of you.
But before we do that, we should celebrate you home cooks that had coconut cream pies that deserve to be acknowledged.
The best coconut cream pie of the evening belongs to Malia.
That coconut cream pie was stunning.
- Up to the balcony to celebrate.
- Thank you.
Yay! I'm the top five tonight! I proved to the judges once again that I can cook and make it in this competition.
So you better watch out, 'cause Miss Malia's coming through.
Now, Malia wasn't the only home cook that excelled tonight.
Ivy, Matthew, and Rhashad, you three, head up to the balcony.
- Thank you! - Congratulations.
- Oh, my God.
Thank you.
- Great job.
Gordon: Now, Ben, Kate, and Evie.
I think we can all agree tonight, you three talented youngsters, that it wasn't your night, right? Unfortunately, two of you are going to be going, and one of you will remain.
Aarón, who do you think deserves to stay? Based just on those pies alone, Ben.
Gordon: And, Christina, please? I agree.
Ben.
I also agree.
Ben, you just made it into the top 12, young man.
Oh, my gosh.
Please say good-bye to the girls and head up to the balcony.
- ( crying ) - Ben: That was way too close.
- Gordon: Ben, well done.
- Oh, God.
I'm so happy to be moving forward.
- Good job, Ben.
- And I wanna go to the top ten.
It's just around the corner, and I am not gonna mess up again.
Kate, Evie, tonight is a shock for us just as much as it is for you, but you're such strong young ladies with so much passion.
I say that because it's a testament to how excited we are to see what comes next in life for you.
Kate, Evie, promise me you're gonna continue cooking.
Both: Yes, Chef.
Ladies, thank you and good night.
I came to "MasterChef Junior" to have fun and maybe win, but, unfortunately, I didn't.
You were amazing friends.
- Don't stop cooking.
- I've accomplished so much.
I've developed so much leadership skills and I made some new friends that I will never forget.
Bye, guys.
I've loved seeing you guys grow.
Kate: I have loved my time here on "MasterChef Junior.
" Getting to cook for Gordon Ramsay, Christina Tosi, and Aarón Sánchez has just been an experience of a lifetime.
- Bye, guys.
- Bye.
- We love you.
- Bye.
This southern country girl's going back to Alabama very proud of herself.
- Announcer: Next time - Whoo! The Kidz Bop Kids are here.
Oh, my God! VIP guests with all the right moves I don't think so.
- Oh! - No offense, but they need to work on it.
bring a very special mystery box.
- What? - Oh, my gosh! - And then - Aww! a blast from the judges' past It still fits.
proves that the future is bright.
- Masterful.
- We've never seen anything like this before.
