NCIS Los Angeles s07e17 Episode Script

Revenge Deferred

1 CALLEN: Sam returned to work with a CIA task force.
Focus of his investigation was Sudanese ex-governor Tahir Khaled.
HETTY: That's Khaled's sister Jada.
You'd be asked to testify against your brother.
What are you talking about? I have done everything NCIS has asked of me.
I want my life back.
Your brother is going to kill you.
Don't get on that plane.
Will you force me to stay? No.
Then this is my choice.
Agent Hanna.
Colonel Joaddan Salli? Welcome to Eritrea.
This is my partner, Agent Callen.
How are you? Two days ago, we received intelligence reports telling us that Thomas Karume and his Lord's Resistance Army was in the area.
Is this Karume's camp? What's left of it.
After the artillery, most of Karume's army escaped.
How long have you been tracking him? Over ten years.
The LRA has killed, mutilated and raped thousands of African people.
Look, we empathize, and we'd like to help, but we need to know why we were brought halfway across the world.
I can only address that with Agent Hanna.
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Anything you say to me, you can say to my partner.
This is for your eyes only.
Please come with me.
I'm sorry.
We've been made aware of an intelligence leak coming out of the NCIS Office of Special Projects.
And right now, you are the only agent who can be trusted.
Why me? I'm sorry.
NCIS: LA 7x17 Revenge Deferred @elderman Are they there with them now? HETTY: Yes, there are six agents at your home with your family.
What about Aiden? Aiden's been pulled from the academy.
He's with Michelle.
Correction: your family is no longer at your home.
They have been moved to a safe house.
Our office was compromised.
Who knows about the location of the safe house? Myself and two former members of your SEAL team.
Even Ms.
Lange doesn't know where Michelle and the kids are.
Uh, you should have all of the Intel they gathered on Sam and his family now.
NELL: Okay, now we have to find out how Thomas Karume, while on the run in Kenya, Uganda and Southern Sudan, received the Intel.
He must have a digital conduit somewhere.
Mm-hmm.
Naval Intelligence is aware of the leak.
What about new Intel on Karume? Nothing we didn't already have.
CIA? Same.
That doesn't track.
This is one of the most wanted men on the planet.
GRANGER: Welcome to our new reality.
Naval Intelligence and CIA now consider us a liability.
KENSI: Yeah, they're not giving us anything until we seal the breach.
Which means we're on our own.
Very much so.
We have to use our own contacts.
SAM: The Global Criminal Tribunal convicted Karume in absentia, of crimes against humanity.
Start with Alex Elmslie.
He owes us big time.
On it.
I've arranged for your transport back.
I'm not coming back.
I'm gonna embed with the African Standby Force and attempt to track down Karume and his army.
GRANGER: You planning on staying a while? The man has been on the run for more than ten years.
I'm not gonna have a discussion about this.
Thank you for what you've done for my family.
They're our family, too, Sam.
(sighs) He's not going to find Karume, Mr.
Callen.
Yeah, well, that's unfortunate 'cause I don't think he's gonna stop until he does.
And I'm gonna be with him.
DEEKS: Oh, this is all very cloak-and-dagger of you, Elmslie.
Is it safe to talk here? Are you paranoid? Maybe you should be.
I was collecting intelligence on Karume, like you asked, when my search triggered I.
T.
security to send an automated message to my superior.
He asked what I was doing, I explained.
And then he called our CIA contacts.
And told you the NCIS Office of Special Projects has a mole.
Exactly.
I couldn't leave the tribunal office with even my briefcase.
DEEKS: Okay, well, then, this has been fun.
And as much as I love listening to your charming British accent, if that's all you got, then If I'm found circumventing the tribunal, I'll lose my job.
I've been sober four months.
I just got my wife and daughter to agree to visit me.
Listen, we saved your life.
You owe us.
And that is why I will do everything I can to help you.
I just need you to understand the stakes.
We do.
What can you tell us? During the prosecution of Karume, I became close with a man named Emmanuel Salim.
He was a child soldier in Karume's army.
Now he's here, working for an organization called The Center for South Sudanese Justice.
They raise money to aid in Karume's capture.
If there's anyone could tell you something about Karume, it's Salim.
How can we talk to him? That's the address for The Center for South Sudanese Justice.
It's three blocks from here.
Salim's expecting you.
I can't be seen there.
Let me know what he says.
Whoa.
Where are you going? I'm going to talk to some of my other contacts, see what else I can find for you.
Thank you.
Yeah, thank you.
It's the least I could do.
(car engine starts) Thomas Karume came to my village, he killed my father, and he took me, at nine, and my brother, at 12, to fight in the Lord's Resistance Army.
It was all in the name of cleansing and purifying the Acholi, my people.
Karume refers to himself as "Hitler" and "King David.
" Really, he's just running a cult.
A very violent cult.
Indeed.
My brother died fighting in Karume's army when he was 14 years old.
I'm so sorry to hear that.
Thank you.
How does he have access to Internet? (knocking) I'm sorry.
Excuse me.
I'm sorry to interrupt.
I'm Evan Labelle.
I'm the founder; I'm the CEO.
Detective Deeks.
Special Agent Blye.
Hi.
Hey.
I want to apologize on behalf of Mr.
Salim.
He has obviously forgotten the protocol in these situations.
And what is that protocol? Well, I'm sure you are aware, the information we gather is highly sensitive.
So you're more than welcome to present us with a list of questions, and I'll be sure to clear them through our board of directors, as well as our contacts at the CIA.
Actually, we're in a little bit of a rush.
One of our agent's family's is being directly threatened by Karume, so Well, we have an obligation to protect our information.
Look, like I said, I'm happy to pass your questions along, but until then, I'm sorry, I'm going to have to ask you to leave.
Please.
Mm-hmm.
Okay.
Thank you.
All right.
ERIC: Got it.
Thank you.
So Eric didn't find anything on Labelle, but Salim got stopped in Arizona with an ounce of marijuana.
And that can be charged as a felony there.
Yes, it can.
Are we really gonna do this to him after everything he's been through? I mean, if Sam's family wasn't in danger, I think we could try something else, but unless you have a better idea, I think we got to roll with this.
He's coming.
Let's go.
You sure? Yeah.
Mr.
Salim.
Hello.
We'd love to ask you a few more questions, completely off the record, Labelle doesn't need to know.
(scoffs) KENSI: Come on.
Please just help us out.
I cannot.
I would be fired.
We know about the marijuana charge in Arizona.
It was just a small amount.
Yeah, but there's still a warrant for your arrest.
All right, listen, you talk to us, answer some questions, we'll take care of that.
It's not gonna be a problem.
And if I don't? Then we extradite you back to the land of sun and guns.
Please get in the car.
We have a place we can speak privately.
Whoever took these must have been trained.
Yeah, you and Michelle would have noticed otherwise.
You can tell by the position of the sun in each of the photos, they were observing 24/7.
It's recon.
They were definitely planning something.
These are frames taken yesterday, grabbed from African Union drones.
We've been tracking Karume's men.
SAM: Zoom in on that group of women.
It's Jada.
You think she's with Karume by choice? Karume takes women prisoners, uses them as sex slaves.
(keypad beeps) CALLEN: That's Tahir Khaled.
Jada's brother.
That's why she's here.
Began aiding Karume late last year.
It's not Karume who's after you and your family.
It's Tahir Khaled.
COLONEL SALLI: Karume and his men arrived here after traveling months through Ethiopia.
We believe they were in this camp for only a week.
SAM: By now, they could have gone 300 miles in any direction.
CALLEN: They head towards Djibouti, they're gonna be trapped to the east by water.
Backtracking toward Ethiopia-- that's too risky at this point.
SAM: Here.
Ad-Damar.
Tahir has a farm out there.
That's where they held me four years ago.
It's isolated.
We should leave now.
I'm afraid it's not that easy.
Must get approval from the African Union before crossing international borders.
Must be sanctioned by the ASF governing body.
You need approval.
I don't.
If something happens, we will not be able to help you.
Sam, even if we find Tahir, he's not gonna talk.
Jada will.
If she knows how Tahir got ahold of that Intel, she'll tell us.
We'll trace it back to the mole.
You're sure you can trust her? Yeah.
SALLI: I don't need to tell you, Agent Hanna, that these are dangerous men.
Entire armies have been slaughtered by their hands.
Colonel we need a jeep.
SALIM: Thomas Karume interacts with very few people.
He's made an entire nation fear him, and he's evaded an international manhunt for over a decade.
The LRA has limited resources, so how does he continuously avoid capture? The less resources one uses, the less there is to track.
What about a digital trail? Does he ever use a satellite connection? Karume never has and never will trust technology.
No phones, no texts.
I don't believe he's ever sent an e-mail.
(phone ringing) It's Elmslie.
Excuse me.
Hello.
Kensi I need to speak to you right away.
What is it? I made a few calls, and, um there's somebody you need to speak to.
Okay.
Not on the phone.
In person.
I'll text you my address.
It's important.
Okay.
We'll be right there.
Bye.
Elmslie wants to meet at his apartment, and he sounds scared.
That's not good.
I need to get back to work-- Labelle has fired people for less.
We're gonna talk to Elmslie first, and then if we don't need anything else, we'll release you.
(door opens) SAM: One guard in front.
CALLEN (over radio): Yeah, there's one out back as well.
It's too quiet.
There's no way Karume and the LRA are here.
SAM: Well, somebody is.
CALLEN: All right.
Why don't we try and smoke them out.
See how many we got.
I'll take the front.
Kens, door.
One, two, three.
Federal agents! Elmslie? KENSI: Clear! Clear! Hey, Kens you should probably see this.
Okay, that's a fair amount of blood.
Yeah, but if they wanted him dead, they would have killed him right here.
I'll call it in, see if there's any security cameras in the neighborhood.
(line ringing) NELL: Hey, Kens.
What have you got? (flames crackling) (muffled grunting) (grunting) (grunts) (groaning weakly) (sports broadcast plays on TV, crowd cheering) (door shuts in distance) SAM: Hello, Tahir.
I told you not to get used to your freedom.
Poetically the roles are now reversed.
You are interrogating me.
It must give you a great sense of satisfaction.
Who gave you the information about my family? TAHIR: (chuckles) Is that what this is about? I thought it was something else, something more personal.
Answer the question.
I prefer to use that information as a bargaining chip at a later date.
If we find our mole without you, you're gonna lose that bargaining chip.
Of all the questions, is that really the one on your mind? When someone threatens my family it's the only thing on my mind.
You and I are alike.
You don't actually have concern for your family.
Is, uh What is her name? Ah.
Yes.
Michelle really that important to you? Or does your allegiance lie elsewhere? (grunting) (Tahir choking) My family means everything to me.
You come after them (choking, groaning) I'll burn you alive.
(gasping) Now as I was saying who gave you the information about my family? You want to kill me but you need my information, so you can't.
You want to torture me but an inability to do that has been inbred in you.
And so I still have the power.
I'm gonna need to spend some time alone with him.
No one's ever gonna know what happens down here, but you and me.
You do what you got to do.
Jada's not with Tahir.
NELL: Elmslie did say Tahir was bringing Jada back to Sudan to kill her.
If it's too late, then someone We should tell Sam.
Exactly.
I'll comb through ASF's drone footage, see if I can determine the last place she was seen alive.
Any news about Jada comes directly to me.
Not Mr.
Callen, and certainly not Mr.
Hanna.
No keys, no phone, no wallet.
Not much else in this place worth taking.
It's a far cry from the house he lived in with his wife and daughter.
Well, he probably doesn't want to settle into a bachelor lifestyle.
Elmslie lost his family trying to save the world.
Listen, nobody takes this job because they want the white picket fence.
Yeah, I know.
But at least you and I have somebody to go home to.
NELL (over radio): Hey, sorry to interrupt.
Elmslie's phone is off, so I wasn't able to track him, but I was able to see that he made eight calls today, all to the same number.
Okay, you're either burying a lead or we We don't know whose number it is-- it's untraceable.
KENSIE: Which of Elmslie's contacts would use untraceable phones? MAN: Keep your hands where I can see them.
Turn around.
MAN: Slowly.
Where is Elmslie? Depends on who wants to know.
Believe me, I can kill you and her before either of you pulls out your weapon.
Well, now you're just bragging.
Is the blood his? We think so.
Who are you? You were just asking who Elmslie could be calling with a number that can't be traced.
Think about it.
Yoda? CIA.
That was my second guess.
Alfred Mahdi.
Detective Deeks, LAPD.
Kensi Blye NCIS.
NELL: Confirmed.
CIA Agent Alfred Mahdi.
Just sent a photo to your phone.
(phone chimes) He's been working with the Agency for 12 years.
Recruited out of Harvard.
Currently a member of a joint task force working to find Thomas Karume.
Wow, Harvard.
You fancy.
So Elmslie wanted us to speak to his contact? That's you? Now, don't tell me you're gonna get all CIA coy on us.
Let's just say I have security concerns about your office.
Ah.
Right.
Yeah.
Zoinks.
Uh, yeah, you can't hear our earwigs, but we just got a "zoinks," which is usually never good.
ERIC: I ran a search of wire transfers ending in countries associated with Karume-- there are over 30 banks in major cities across northeast Africa that have received funds, all routed through this one shell company.
Can we track who's funding the shell company? NELL: Well, it's not that easy.
It looks like the money's being routed through dozens of banks all across the world.
Any way to connect those banks to Karume? ERIC: Each bank processes thousands of transactions every day.
It's gonna take some time to pinpoint a common thread.
Certified National Bank.
3rd and Highfield.
You got anything else? Cross-check each of those banks with accounts associated with that branch.
You get that, Beale? On it.
Thought you didn't trust us.
You were almost there.
Might as well help you out.
How kind of you.
ERIC: That's it-- each of the international banks received a transfer from the same account number originating here in L.
A.
NELL: That's strange.
That's the same account number for The Center for South Sudanese Justice.
So the organization working to stop Karume is actually funding him? Well, that's a zoinks, indeed.
Hetty, Tahir still hasn't given us anything on Karume or on Jada.
Has Jada joined her brother willingly? Well, Sam will tell you there's no way.
But you're not so sure? No one held a gun to her head when she got on that plane.
Your partner is going to want to find her.
And find out who leaked that Intel about his family.
Regardless of whose side she's on, she may know how that Intel got to her brother.
So you and Sam are going to take on the entire Lord's Resistance Army to rescue her? Sam would for his family.
That's why, before you do anything foolish, I want you both back here now.
I can't tell Sam to just walk away.
No, but I'm going to ask SECNAV to order a special operations team to extract Tahir immediately.
If Sam wants to interrogate him, he can do it someplace safe.
Preferably a black site in Poland.
You just make sure your partner is on that plane with you.
Okay.
Okay.
Thanks.
(hangs up) There's been a development, Owen.
We've just received drone footage of Jada Khaled.
Alive.
And now we know where she is.
Yeah.
Looks like she's being held by five of Karume's men.
Yes, it does.
I also know you didn't tell Sam and Callen that we have a good idea of where she is.
You want to second-guess me, too? You're probably doing enough of that yourself.
I'm just too old to lose them.
What if Jada can explain where Tahir got the Intel? We can trace it back to our mole.
That's not the reason he wants to find her, and you know it.
I think you're underestimating Sam's obligation to Jada.
I am fully aware of Sam's obligation to that woman.
Obligation can be a powerful emotion.
Is that from your personal experience, Owen? He'll never be at peace leaving her over there.
And God help you if she dies.
If it keeps Sam alive, let him hate me.
I can live with that.
(Tahir gasping) (raspy breathing) (groaning) (grunting, choking) What are you doing? You're going to hang me? Nah.
Not gonna hang you.
Just want to make sure you don't run away.
This is the bark of a dog with no bite.
Don't move around too much.
I don't want you to hurt yourself if that chair tips over.
Kill me, and you will never know who's betraying you from the inside.
Kill you.
I would never do that.
I would have to go crazy.
Lose it.
Which, as a trained Navy SEAL and NCIS agent, could never happen.
So what are we doing? We're just talking.
I'm asking questions.
You're answering.
All good.
That is, till it's not good.
And then? Ah Let's not think about that.
Think positive.
I do.
Even when then people I work with are in danger, the lives of my wife and children are threatened.
I just look at the bright side of life.
So who gave you the information about my family? That isn't what you really want to know.
What you really want to know is is Jada alive? Is she being tortured as we speak? She's not my concern right now.
You can fool the world, but I have seen with my own eyes.
I have witnessed your and Jada's relationship.
I know.
Know what? That you did, indeed, love her! And if you kill me, you will never know her fate.
CALLEN: Sam we need to talk.
(gasps) Colonel Salli has ordered an extraction.
A special ops team is on their way to take Tahir away.
I need more time with him.
You can interrogate him once we're out of the country.
We have Tahir, okay? The immediate threat to your family is over.
Eventually we will find the leak.
Jada may know how Tahir got that information.
It'd be stupid to stop now.
G, this has nothing to do with what Tahir said to me.
ASF is gonna be here in two hours.
I'm not leaving, G.
NELL: Now, Labelle is a con man out of Marseilles.
The reason we couldn't find anything on him is Labelle is an alias.
His real name is Pons Laurent.
He's wanted for a string of crimes across France and believed to have strong ties to the French-Corsican mafia.
What is Laurent's connection to Karume? He's just a mercenary running a fake charity to collect money and funnel information back to Karume.
I bet he's getting a nice cut for his efforts.
It's a brilliant plan on Karume's part.
Collect funds to aid in his own capture.
Then use the money to support his army.
And the LRA gains direct Intel on who's after them, how much they know and how they're being tracked.
The CIA says The Center for South Sudanese Justice has been using the dark net.
It's probably how Laurent is communicating with Karume.
And it's most likely how the Intel on Sam and his family was sent to Tahir.
Salim was saying Karume doesn't trust computers and now the CIA's saying that he's been using the dark net for years? That is pretty disturbing.
What if Salim is working for Karume? He was a member of Karume's LRA.
KENSI: And a huge part of Karume's process is brainwashing the children that he's kidnapped.
DEEKS: I'll do you one better-- what if it's not just Salim and Laurent? What if everybody in that office is working for Karume? Go! Move! Move out! (soldier shouting orders in distance) There's a helicopter waiting for you just across the border in South Sudan.
I am very much looking forward to coming to Los Angeles.
We're not taking you to the U.
S.
Put Mr.
Khaled in the truck.
And keep a gun on him.
SOLDIER: Yes, Colonel.
Come, let's go.
Get up.
Get-get up.
The helicopter will take you to Bentiu Airport, where U.
S.
Special Forces will be waiting to meet you.
You can ride with me.
Colonel.
Any new Intel on Karume? No.
He's like a ghost.
But I will find him one day.
He will see justice.
I did receive this.
It came anonymously through the U.
S.
embassy in Juba.
I thought you should see it.
Do you know where this is? It's embedded with GPS coordinates, but these photos are over ten hours old.
We don't know who sent that.
It could be a trap.
You go with these guys.
I'll check it out.
Send the location to my phone.
CALLEN: She's with a group of heavily-armed guys.
You're not going without me.
You should have the coordinates.
It's only 100 kilometers to the west.
We'll camp here for the night.
If we don't hear from you, we will take Tahir back to South Sudan in the morning.
Okay.
Thank you, Colonel.
Thanks.
I have to do this.
You don't.
It's like you always say: it's just what we do.
Mm.
You better hurry up, I'm not waiting.
You know Hetty's gonna kill us.
Won't matter.
We'll probably die trying to fight Tahir's men.
You're welcome.
Right this way.
Kens, did you bring the popcorn? 'Cause I forgot the popcorn.
Ooh, I didn't bring the popcorn.
That is too bad, 'cause it's gonna be one hell of a show.
And there we are.
Were you aware that Evan Labelle was having direct communication with Thomas Karume and other high-ranking officers of the LRA? That's impossible.
Evan devoted years to finding Karume.
(chuckles) Here I thought the show was gonna be on the big screen, but turns out the Oscar gold is right here.
Hmm.
We thought that this was happening behind your back until we found footage of you authorizing transfers to the LRA from the same bank.
Evan asked me to make those transfers.
I had no idea where they were going.
Don't you mean Pons Laurent? Yeah, we know everything about him.
You know what I really loved? I loved the bit about not trusting technology.
You know? 'cause it was simple.
It was understated.
You turned in a tour de force performance, but, uh show's over.
Who are you? No.
This is about you, my friend.
I tried to leave.
Many times.
And Karume threatened to torture and kill my wife and son if I did not come to the United States to work for Laurent.
My son is he was just a baby.
I had no choice.
Why bring in Laurent? Karume said we needed a white face to give it legitimacy.
Laurent has Elmslie? He knew Elmslie brought you to me.
He wanted to find out what Elmslie knew.
Where would Laurent take him? The artist colonies downtown.
Laurent has an office there.
I'll call Nell, get an address.
Should we wait for Mahdi? Elmslie's probably being tortured.
You ready? Think Salim lied to us? Yeah, this isn't art.
This is someone whose art teacher should've called their guidance counselor years ago.
Check it out.
(gunshots) Down! I changed my mind-- I want the white picket fence, 'cause people with white picket fences never get shot.
That wouldn't be any fun.
Get down! (man grunts) (yells) (man grunts) (groans) You're out of options, Laurent.
KENSI: Be smart.
It's over.
Your prison sentence goes to life if Elmslie dies.
(panting): I can get you a deal if you testify against the former members of Karume's army.
What are you offering? I'll get you five years, out in two.
It's a good deal.
I would take it.
I'd put the gun down.
KENSI: Put it down.
Do it! DEEKS: Put it down.
(exhales) (panting) Oh, I thought you were smarter than that.
What are you talking about? You aided and abetted a known terrorist and mass murderer.
Not to mention fraud charges.
I have no authority to cut you a deal.
KENSI: I do.
How does life in prison without the possibility of parole sound? Sounds like justice to me.
Take him away.
Thank you.
It's the least we can do.
(sighs deeply) I know you don't want to hear this Then don't say it.
This could all be a setup.
Tahir, the farm, Jada-- they might be funneling us in here so they can ambush us.
G, I know Jada.
No matter how angry she is with me, she would never turn on me.
Let's do it.
Don't move.
Where's the girl? Where is she? Put down your weapon.
I said put down your weapon.
Sam! Agent Callen! Drop your weapons.
So you have come to rescue me again.
I never thought this is who you were.
You think these men are with Tahir? Or Karume.
They rescued me from my brother.
Sam This is Patrick Badri.
He's a colonel in the South Sudanese Army.
And he he's also my fiancé.
I've heard a lot about you, Mr.
Hanna.
Patrick may I have a moment alone with Sam? PATRICK: Of course.
I have been in contact with Patrick for the last three years.
How did he find you? It was I who found him.
We were in love once, many years ago.
(chuckles): We we were only teenagers then.
Being alone in America for all of that time made me long for those days.
And that is why I returned to Africa.
But your brother got to you first.
Yes.
Tahir was waiting for me when I landed back in Sudan.
Can Patrick protect you from Tahir's people? I will have the entire South Sudan Army at my back.
Not to mention Patrick is, how you would say a badass.
Sam I have found love again.
But this time, Sam this time it is real.
Do you know how Tahir got photos of my family? No.
He only kept me alive because he knew that one day this would draw you out.
But he is obsessed with you, Sam.
Tahir will stop at nothing to kill you.
Yeah, well, I won't have to worry about that now.
We've got him in custody.
(sighs) (softly): Good.
If you ever need anything from me, to protect you or or your family please let me be there for you.
As a very very good friend.
You all right? Yeah.
I'm good.
Good.
We got to get back to the farm.
Let's do it.
(engine revs) So, I've analyzed and dated all the photos retrieved from the tent in Eritrea.
These were taken in December of 2015 while Aiden was home for the holidays.
That's one year after we apprehended our mole, Carl Brown.
There's a second mole, and he's still here.
Son of a bitch.
GRANGER: Look into everyone who started working here around the same time as Carl Brown.
But we've done that.
Do it again.
GRANGER: I want to know everything about them.
If they like ice cream, I want to know the damn flavor.
Until we find this mole, it's open season on the lives of everyone under this roof, including you and me.
I'll find him.
Or her.
I promise you.
Just like you promised me that the photos of Jada would never reach Mr.
Hanna.
You sent them to the embassy in Juba.
You know I'm a romantic.
I know you lied to me, Owen.
We've been lying to each other for a long time, Henrietta.
(grunts) (woman crying nearby) What happened? We were attacked not long after you left.
200 LRA soldiers.
I saw Karume.
I looked into his eyes.
