How about this sport coat? With a nice purple tie? To your sister's wedding? You wanna look like a hockey coach? Put on a suit.
Look, I've worn that thing to, like, every formal occasion, claud.
People are gonna start to think That you have good taste? Put on the suit.
What about this blazer? Dad's.
Ok, Charlie, I don't understand.
If I owned an Armani anything, I would, like, wear nothing else.
I mean, what is your problem with this suit? Ok.
You want to know what it is? Kathleen gave it to me.
That's like a a tip.
So every time I put it on, I feel like a gigolo or something.
That's very moving, Charlie, but my feeling on this is, unless you're gonna say that in your wedding toast, you should put on the suit.
Ok.
I'll put it on.
Well Charlie, what happened to you? Nothin'.
I mean, I guess I just haven't been eatin' much since Nina took off on that trip.
Get her on the phone.
We gotta fatten you up.
Ok, Sarah, I am freakin' out here.
You gotta talk me off the ledge.
Bailey, what is it? American lit.
They gave me Moby dick to read in, like, 2 days.
Am i am I gonna get it? Can I possibly make sense of, like, 9,000 pages of art? Are those red peppers you're cooking? 'Cause you know I can't eat those.
What? Yes, but they're not for you.
Whatever where was I? Um, on a ledge, but listen, don't be.
Moby dick is your kind of book.
I mean, it's got fighting.
It's got hunting.
Isn't that a lot of peppers for one person? Um, they're for Elliot and me.
He's coming over for dinner tonight.
I'm sorry.
Elliot? Who's Elliot? Bailey, I told you all about him.
You know, sophomore from north bay? We met in the chat room? We talked so long my fingers hurt from typing? Oh, you mean Elliot.
Yes.
But why does he have to come over tonight? I mean, when I have all this reading I have to get done? Actually, you know, I was thinking that maybe you could I don't know Leave? Leave?! But I-I've got my room perfectly set up for reading.
Look, Bailey, if you were seeing someone now Say, like, Annie Which I'm not.
Ok.
All right, but say you were.
I would leave, and I would give you the space.
You'll have plenty of space.
I'm gonna be in a whole other room.
Are you actually pretending not to get me here? Why I'd like to have a date without my ex being 3 feet away? I'll be quiet.
I'll be very quiet.
You won't even know I'm here.
Ok.
You know what? I'm just gonna say this.
If you ever do have someone over, I wish her the best of luck because, apparently, you have forgotten what 2 people do on a date! Everybody wants to live Like they wanna live And everybody wants to love Like they wanna love And everybody wants to be Closer to free Closer to free Julia: You are so wrong! You are so wrong! Steve and Leah's was the best 'cause Leah started reading that poem, and we all started crying.
Sure, if all you wanna do at your wedding is blubber.
My favorite was th e burkes'.
Remember? The food was so late, all the grownups got drunk and ended up diving into the pool.
All those wet tuxes.
What music did they use? 'Cause Steve and Leah had all those goofy show tunes.
They had this awesome reggae mix.
Huh.
God, it's such a hard decision 'cause music totally sets the tone, don't you think, Griffin? I'm sorry.
What? Music for the wedding.
Have you thought of anything you'd like? Whatever you want.
Uh, Griffin, could you please I mean, we're, like, meeting here.
Beg your pardon? What are you reading? Oh, um, they opened up a branch of this new bike shop chain.
Oh? Well, that's fascinating, Griffin, but It's, like, 3 blocks away from mine.
You know, we're planning our wedding here, and we're doing it, just the 3 of us Well, actually, uh, the 3 of us and the caterer.
Caterer? Why would who? This woman.
Zoe.
She's really great.
And I just thought, instead of getting the same old food from salinger's, why not go with something new? Yeah, but you just added all that stuff to the menu.
Plus I didn't want to have to do it.
I'm having a hard time doing all this stuff I gotta do With the house and the kids and work It's just It's wearin' me out.
I need some help.

I can't.
I gotta check this place out.
Now? You have to do this now? Yeah, yeah.
Now.
Sorry.
Griffin: How do ya do that? How do ya do an oil change for 9.
95? I mean, that barely covers the cost of the parts, much less the labor and whatever.
Well, the work's good, if that's what you're askin'.
We guarantee it for at least 90 days.
Really? Hey, you're welcome to pay more.
No, no.
I just I just I don't get it.
I know this shop down the street, they charge 19.
You know, they've got half the overhead you do.
Well, we're a big company, ok? You don't have to worry.
Why would you do that? Why would you want to lose money? We're new around here.
We need to bring in business.
You mean, like, steal it? If you're thinking about your buddy down the street, let me give you some advice.
Don't buy from him 'cause his guarantee's no good.
What are you talkin' about? He'll be out of business in 90 days.
Look, I got other customers.
Do you want to buy something or what? No, no.
I'm all set.
Ow.
Bailey, what are you doing there? I was just, um I was checking the plug here.
The halogen was flickering on and off, so That should do it.

He canceled.
Oh, great.
Then you can stay for dinner.
Or not.
Do you play racquetball, Charlie? Yeah, uh, but Not for years.
I'm way out of practice.
You can't be any worse than me.
Wanna bet? I've still got my court time if you don't believe me.
Why not? I've been feelin' a little tired lately, but a little sweat might do me good.
Let's order, then.
My court time starts in 90 minutes.
Will you guys mind if I don't come? It's our wedding, Griffin! This whole thing is for us! I know, but you're asking me about cake.
I'm supposed to care about cake? For our wedding? Yes, you should! I i don't.
I just i don't.
Well, you should know that really hurts.
Oh, come on.
Now, what am I supposed to do, pretend? No.

Kirsten says she's really great.
Amazing.
She's fantastic.
I'm crazy about her.
That's a wonderful feeling.
I should know.
Yeah, well I got it pretty bad.
Ever since she left town, I can't even eat.
That's pretty pathetic, huh? You You want to hear pathetic? Sometimes I'm at the hospital, and it's 4:00 in the morning, and I just gotta see her.
So I get in the car, and I drive home, and I kiss her on the cheek.
Then I go back to work again.
That's pretty lame.
Yeah.
But I can beat it.
The other day she had to work late, so I set up a picnic dinner in her parking lot.
Just to surprise her.
That's, uh i can't compete with that.
You ready? Good.
You want to take a minute? You look a little winded there.
Fine.
Just great.
Charlie? Hey, Charlie! Charlie Charlie What? What was I Did I just You passed out.
No, no.
Has this ever happened to you before? No.
Not Never.

B.
C.
Really? That's not on the chart.
I know.
I hope you don't mind.
I already called for the records.
Um, you know what? I'm feelin' a lot better already.
A lot.
And can I get another peanut cluster? Yeah, in a minute.
Have you ever had an incident, an episode like this before? No No, he hasn't.
Which is why I think we really need to see those blood results.
Then what indicated the tests? He had nausea and trouble sleeping.
Hey, Paul? I got an idea.
Why don't you go and find Kirsten.
I'll call you when I know what's up here.
Ok? I'd really like to be here All right, it's a hospital, Paul.
I think I'm gonna be ok.
Ok? Ok.

Let's see what we have here.
Hmm.
What's this? What's what? Oh.
Hey.
Um So did you get some reading done last night? A little, yeah.
You didn't get home till pretty late.
Yeah, well This book has really tiny print.
Why are you washing those? They're fresh out of the package.
I know, but it makes me more comfortable.
It's softer to What is that smell? Oh, um, ambrosia scented candles.
Huh.
Hey, Bailey, you know what? I need a guy's opinion.
Is this too strong? That depends.
What kind of insect are you trying to repel? Bailey! Look, I want it to be nice, you know? Not over the top, but nice.
Uh-huh.
Hey, Bailey? Don't you Well, aren't you the least bit interested in meeting Elliot? I'm sorry, Sarah.
I i gotta I know, I know.
It's just, I really like him, Bailey, and he's going to be coming over here again, and Well Whatever happens, then Yes? Never mind.
You have to read.
So, Charlie, how's your energy? Did you get any sleep? How about something to eat? I'm fine, guys.
I'm fine.
Maybe I should just get back in there and help Julia.
Sit, Charlie.
Sit.
Claudia: Don't worry, jule.
He'll be here.
He probably just got held up at the shop or something.
It better be at gunpoint.
So Let me get this correctly, now.
It's 29 people in the living room for the ceremony and the reception.
You know, I'm really glad you guys can come.
It means a lot to me that you'd I'm sorry.
Are they on the list? Yeah, I just invited them.
Ok.
So It's 31 people in the living room I don't think so.
I mean, Griffin and I would end up in the fireplace.
Ok.
Well, then What? Why don't you have it in that great backyard? Claudia: Isn't that Isn't that like tempting fate? Not if you Make it different somehow.
Like I don't know, like Have it at night.
Yeah? Yeah, yeah, you're right, with, like, lights and stuff.
And in the garden Ooh, it could be nice.
Yeah.
So then, we're Under lights.
Is that it? Until somebody calls and cancels.
Griffin, is that Oh.
Oh, ok.
Um Charlie, it's your doctor's office.
Thanks.
Yes.
It's Yes.
Oh, well Isn't she there? So can she call me later? I'm gonna be around all afternoon.
But why can't she All right.
All right.
I'll, um, I'll see you then.
No.
It's probably just some test results that they Charlie Charlie, what happened? Nothin'.
I'm fine.
Just like I told you, the test results came back, and I'm fine.
Oh, that's good.
Good.
Terrific.
Did they mention your white cell counts? Everything's ok.
Everything checked out fine.
So Can we walk through the ceremony now? Or are we waiting for the groom? Uh No.
Let's not.
Let's just do it.
Come in.
Oh.
Whoa! I said don't come in.
Sorry.
That's ok.
Oh.
You know what? Let me Let me get outta your No.
You know what, Bailey? That's ok.
Listen, um You don't you don't have to No.
'Cause, see, the reason that I have these No.
Please don't tell me.
Bailey, I just want to say Sarah! Please! Look, i i i i don't This this isn't Look, I know that I haven't been seeing him that long That's whatever And I know that it seems kinda fast, I know.
Kinda? Kinda fast? When we were together 6 or 7 months before we even brought it up?! I'm in college now, Bailey.
Oh, college! College! Yes! This is what people my age do, ok? And why is it so important for me to wait? Why? Why? Because Because Bailey, I really like this guy.
Ok? He's he's incredibly sweet.
And, you know, whenever we're together, he's always got some, I don't know, some dumb little gift, and He picks me flowers.
He leaves me notes Ok.
You know what? Actually No.
This is something that I think I really want now.
Bailey, I can't spend the rest of my life being a virgin, and, well, Elliot, he seems like the kind of guy Hey You know what? I just remembered, you don't mind, I gotta use the bathroom.
Um, Griffin, listen, I've written up, like, 18 jobs.
God.
So we're losing like, what, 10 bucks a job? Yeah.
Do you want me to stop? No way.
No.
Keep writing.
We don't have a choice.
We can't let this guy take our customers away from us.
Come on.
Griffin? Oh.
Hey.
Uh, where have you been? Gettin' married.
What? Oh! God! I totally just I'm I'm sorry, jule.
I'm just really, really busy.
I'm sorry.
You couldn't make it because you had a lot of customers? I'm workin' alone here, jule.
Then hire someone! Get help! I you don't I can't.
You mean you won't.
Julia, look, you don't understand, all right? I I have to do this, all right? I have to be here.
You know what really gets me? Is that I didn't even want this, at first Because when we got married, I said, I don't need the old-fashioned stuff.
I don't need the people, I don't need a church, I don't need anything because the way we did it, it was It was about us.
But then Charlie said let's do this again, and let's do this with everyone around.
And I got incredibly psyched.
We-we're gonna do that, jule, all right? No Griffin No, because If you're not excited to do this, I mean, if this is Some big burden, then Julia, listen, all right? Just don't worry, ok? All right? I'll Whatever I'll figure something out, all right? I'll get out of this.
Ok? Sorry I'm late.
I had a hospital emergency this morning.
Backed everything up.
Well, I don't even know why I had to come in.
'Cause, um, I'm feeling great.
I've I've been eating and sleeping.
How's that incision under your arm? Is it tender? No.
It's it's fine.
Everything's Would you like to sit down, Mr.
salinger? No.
I would like to know why I had to come in here when we're both very busy, and I know that I'm fine.
You have cancer, Mr.
salinger.
I'm I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
Cancer? We found a tumor in your lymph node.
It's a kind of malignancy we call hodgkin's disease Wait a minute.
Wait a minute.
No.
Because, uh, 3 weeks ago, they gave me, like, every blood test there is, and so you must have this stuff mixed up.
Hodgkin's doesn't show up in the blood.
So those tests, I'm afraid they wouldn't indicate anything one way or the other.
What do you mean they don't Mr.
salinger Look, I've dealt with, like, 4 or 5 different doctors on this, and every one of them says something different.
I know.
I'm sorry, but we've taken a closer look now, and it's certain.
You have a malignancy.
I'm sorry.
Doctor: I know this all sounds very scary, but I want you to know that, as cancers go, this is relatively treatable.
The therapies we have are highly effective Radiation and, if necessary, chemo And if we're early enough and a little bit lucky, we can knock this into remission in just a matter of months.
First, we have to stage the disease.
We need to locate any other tumors you have, partly through imaging, such as cat scans or mri.
Now, mostly these tests are not painful, and we can usually schedule them all for one day.
Preferably, we'd start within the week.
How does that work for you? This week? I'm sorry.
This week.
You want this to happen this week? Well, yes, because the sooner we start the treatments No.
I'm sorry.
I won't do that.
Well, if you're traveling out of town, I would strongly No.
It's just it's just not a good time.
Well, can we at least put down a time Later.
Just I mean We'll work out something later.
Oh, my god.
What, did I overdo it? This is It's tonight?! Yeah.
I tried to tell you.
This Thing is happening tonight.
Well, you know, I don't know.
He may not want to.
Oh, he's gonna want to.
Trust me.
Those candles are very strong.
Hey, Bailey, listen, please don't be mad at me, ok? 'Cause when I told you that, you know, he was gonna come over again, I thought that you knew I meant tonight.
Bailey, wh-what are you doing? Where are you going? Library.
Gotta lotta pages left to read.
Oh, Bailey, come on.
I really don't want to sleep outside Reference section.
It's upstairs, so it stays nice and warm, so you just Have Have a Be good.
Is that center rear? Why is it throbbing, Marty? Well, get rid of the reverb.
Hey, Griffin.
Is that you? What's up, partner? Uh, nothing.
Look, you're busy.
I'll come back at a better time, all right? Aw, what better time? Talk to me.
What's going on? It's no big deal.
It's just, you know, uh They opened up one of those chain shops, motorhouse, right down the street from my shop.
No big deal? It's it's ok.
Naw, it is.
It's, uh I've matched all their prices, so I haven't lost any of my business.
So that's why you came down here, to tell me you're fine? Just tell me, how much do you need? Maybe a couple 5 grand? So 5 grand is All you're ever gonna need? Well Because if you keep coming to me like this, I'm gonna feel that my partner's not a businessman.
I'm gonna feel like he can't come clean with the people he needs.
Ok, look Ma-maybe we can make it 15? That's that's what I need.
No problem.
You got it.
Bailey? Well, hey.
It's you.
Bailey, are you ok? Yeah.
I'm I'm fine.
Why? You weren't at the meeting.
You missed a bunch of meetings.
I mean, uh, are you in trouble here? Are you about to slip? No.
No.
God.
No way.
Well, I asked around, and everybody had said that they hadn't seen you.
Annie, relax.
That's because I've been going to meetings over by campus.
Ok.
Then That's fine.
You're ok.
Yeah.
So How did you find me here? Well, i i remembered that you had had mentioned this place.
Well, I've mentioned a lot of places.
I know.
And you checked out all of them? Some.
Annie Look, uh, you're ok, so that's great, so I'm going.
Annie! Annie, wait! Annie, please wait! So you were really worried about me? Forget it, Bailey, ok? It's no big deal.
No big deal? Are you kidding me? I wasn't accusing you of drinking, ok? I just said that I was concerned.
No, I know.
I know that, and that That is a big deal Because I've been thinking about you, too.
You have? Yeah.
A lot.
I mean I try not to.
I try not to think about you, but then Somebody drops something off at my apartment for you or I see your name on the mailbox or I hear your voice in the hallway and I have to, like, hide and let you walk by.
Wow.
I do that, too.
You do? Well Well, what is that? What is that about? I don't know.
I've been thinking I understand Why you're not supposed to go out looking for somebody when you're just getting onto the wagon, 'cause you're just getting used to everything, all the new changes, your new friends and New habits and new everything, but But what if you've already found her? How does walking away from somebody great Help keep you sober? I don't know.
No, I just i really don't want to talk about this till Griffin gets here.
But are you sure he's gonna come? I mean, he hasn't been to any meetings yet.
He said he would.
He said he would be here before Griffin? It's me.
It's me.
Am I late? Hey.
Uh, no, actually.
You're right on time.
We just started.
Oh, great.
So I was just telling Zoe that I'm really not into this whole receiving line thing.
Are you? No way.
Are you kidding? Shake hands for half an hour.
I'd rather go back to high school.
Great.
And there's a few other things, too, Zoe.
Zoe: What other thin gs? Well, like seating arrangements, 'cause, um We talked about it, and we've kind of decided that we don't want to do that.
Zoe: You want people sitting all over the house? What happens when there are toasts? Julia: Well, that's the other thing.
We decided not to have, you know, toasts.
I just think if you're not greeting guests and you're not sitting down and you're not having toasts That's the thing, all that stuff.
I just you see I want this wedding to feel like, um I want it to feel But I've done this before, guys, and I know what people want, and they want Zoe, Zoe.
You know, it's their wedding.
Charlie.
Have you even heard the question? I don't care.
Whatever it is, it's up to my sister and Griffin.
You don't even want to hear what they're thinking? No one's gonna make them feel bad about what they want, all right?! Charlie, why are you Didn't you hire me for my experience? Then you know what? Let's just Let's just forget this, all right? You're fired.
Why don't you just leave? Julia: Charlie? Char? Can I come in? Just a sec.
Charlie? Jule, I'm sorry.
No.
Thank you, Charlie.
For everything.
Thank you.
You hungry at all? Thirsty? You want anything? No.
Just this.
So What do we tell Natalie? That's a good question.
'Cause her sleep-over there, she's gonna be home soon.
Well We tell her I don't know.
We tell her we're dating, but we tell it to her real slow.
That sounds right.
But let's not tell her too slow.
Why not? Because The way I see it, it's really good news.
I'm impressed.
breaking down bikes.
Hey, Howie.
You know, you're doing the right thing, Griffin.
Pretty soon, all these people are gonna come back with their big-ticket jobs, and you're gonna rake it in.
You think? You know what the great thing about this is? I had a chance to help you out, right? And I did.
Now you have a chance to help me out.
Just don't ask me to change your oil, man.
I'm clean out of filters.
Ha.
No, what I mean is, um I've got some other things going on beside the club.
See? Some import/export, stuff that's off the books.
Whoa.
Boy, you're starting to scare me, man.
No, no, no, no.
It's not anything like that.
I mean, it's not drugs or anything, but it's a cash business, Griffin, and it's doin' pretty good, so I need to find a place to park some profits, you know? A nice, quiet bank account.
What do you mean? Like hide it from the government? It's just some deposits and withdrawals.
No big deal.
You know, this doesn't sound like something I want to be a part of.
But then I gotta ask myself, why do I help this kid anymore? Why don't I just take my money back and leave? W-wait a minute.
So you'd actually I like you, Griffin.
I want to help you out.
I want us to help each other.
Don't you? Kirsten: Charlie? Hi.
Kirsten, what are you I was just I was just Do you have a second? Yeah, yeah, please.
Listen, I have been thinking about this and Thinking about this, and I kind of I really don't think that we can come to Julia's wedding.
You What? I know what I can handle, Charlie, and I know what I can't, and being at this house like that, you know, for like A wedding, I I'll tell her myself if you think that she'll be hurt.
I just i just wanted to tell you first because I Charlie? Is this Are you What's wrong? I'm sick, Kirsten.
I'm Man, I'm just really, really sick.
You're si I've got this It's called hodgkin's.
Oh, my god.
It's this cancer, but I know.
I know what it is.
And they gave me these statistics, you know? And all I can do, I keep looking at everything, and I'm like What's 75% of that tree over there? Is that a lot? Is that a good chance? Does that mean I'm gonna live? Oh, god.
Can I God.
What? You haven't told them? Julia's getting married in a week.
But what about Nina? I'll tell them in a week.
All right, Kirsten? I will.
God.
God, Charlie, I don't Oh, oh, Griffin, you like this one? Uh, yeah, sure.
Me, too.
Oh, wow.
You know what? I think Yeah, these were hand-painted in Italy.
Somewhere off the amalfi coast, I think.
Hmm.
You wanna get this one? Oh, no, no, no, no.
It's a lot more complicated than that.
It is? Yes.
Yes.
I read about this.
If you're gonna register for a wedding, you gotta think about it, you know? You gotta choose something that's a little pricier than you would normally buy for yourself.
Otherwise, why bother, right? Like this? Well, except it can't be so expensive that people can't buy you more than 2 or 3 pieces.
Wow.
Like this.
Right.
Exactly.
'Cause, otherwise, you gotta buy the rest of the set yourself or, worse, you gotta return it for something you didn't even want in the first place.
Oh? Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
So what we need to look for is something a little more A little more Excuse me, um, miss, um Could I ask you a question? Sure.
Um If somebody gives you something that you don't want, like wedding stuff, uh Can you exchange it for cash? Well, it depends on how it's paid for, sir, but sometimes, yes.
Thanks.
You're welcome.
Hi.
Hi.
Uh, so, Bailey, thanks for last night.
You know, for giving me the place.
Oh, hey No sweat.
So, um Where'd you end up spending the night? Oh.
Um I just Crashed on a buddy's floor.
Really? Yeah.
Oh.
Well, thanks.
So How are you? You all right? Yeah.
Yeah, I'm fine.
I'm just Fine.
Ok, good.
You know, I'm just Well, I'm just What? I'm just still completely a virgin.
You're You didn't After all that All those Candles? Yeah, yeah.
We didn't do it.
Don't tell me he missed the signs.
No, no.
He saw the signs.
It almost happened.
It's just at the very last second, I just Changed my mind.
Really? Why? I just, you know, I was looking around my room, and it was like I saw my whole existence, but everything that I saw was new.
You know? New place, new school, new boyfriend, new life.
All these changes in, like, the last 5 minutes, and i don't know It just seemed like adding another change to the mix seemed like a bad idea.
You know? Like too much.
Do you think that's really lame? No.
I don't.
I don't.
'Cause I was saying that El nino wouldn't shift migration patterns.
But, really, I didn't know.
Ha ha.
It was a guess.
I mean, an educated guess, but, still, it was a guess.
And I was so afraid that we'd get down there, and I, you know, wouldn't see, like, a single wren.
Gues s what.
Ha.
We saw wrens.
And wrens and wrens.
It was amazing.
Of course, we still know nothing about El nino, but everyone thinks I'm a genius.
Ohh.
Sweetie, I missed you, too.
So what about you? Any news? Ok, I have to guess.
Um Any colorful restaurant snafus? Uh Any wrinkles in the wedding plans? What, Claudia and Owen were perfect kids? Shh.
