Playtime

1 (narrator) Previously on "Pretty Little Liars.
.
" What're you doing? There's a footage on here that proves that Noel's working with Charlotte.
- I'm pregnant.
- I'm here.
Whatever you decide to do.
I never wanna spend another day without you ever, for the rest of my life.
Can I kiss you, just one last time? Just to say goodbye.
Ali, you're really vulnerable right now.
Unbelievable.
Nothing has changed, has it, Em? (man on TV) Nicole Gordon, one of the 15 missing American aid workers has been found alive.
Do you really think we'd let you leave? You know too much.
[grunting.]
[gunshot.]
I would never hurt you.
I'm your mother.
[siren blaring.]
Mom? I'm not your mother, but I'm gonna take care of you like I was.
What's your name? - Spencer.
- Okay, Spencer.
You lost some blood, I need you to stay awake until we can get you topped off, okay? [sighs.]
Okay.
Tell me your last name, Spencer.
What's your mom's name? Who's your mom? Spencer? Come on.
Come on, Spencer.
Come on.
Someone should have stayed with Spencer and kept Harry from running away.
Yeah, well it's too late for that now.
So it was Noel the whole time, Noel and Jenna? All we know they were connected to Charlotte and Rollins.
Connected doesn't mean a motive.
Maybe they thought we knew too much about something.
Where did Jenna go? You know, she probably walked into a closet.
Guys, if Noel was A.
D.
and Noel is dead, that means - Don't say that out loud.
- It's what we're all thinkin'.
No, I know, but just don't say it out loud.
Okay? Not yet.
Watch out, folks, coming through.
[machine beeping.]
(Aria) Toby? What happened to him? Oh, no.
If Toby's here, where's Yvonne? Got a secret can you keep it? Swear this one you'll save Better lock it in your pocket Taking this one to the grave If I show you then I know you Won't tell what I said They call it a medically induced coma.
So, basically, she hasn't woken up since she got out of surgery.
It's gonna be okay.
Spencer got shot? She's home now.
Good.
Tell her.
.
Maybe you shouldn't tell her anything.
I don't want her to worry.
[instrumental music.]
- Hey.
- Hi.
Welcome home.
[sighs.]
Um.
.
What's this? I didn't know when you'd be back.
I.
.
I wasn't sure if I should stay.
Right here waiting Where I'm meant to be There's nothing unbreakable This I know for sure What could be more than you? And what could be more than me? Come to think.
.
What's the big idea? I'm just making sure that you're real.
Hmm.
Paint me in your mind.
.
That'll do.
Do you have any plans for the day? I have a few ideas.
Or, we can use that energy to track down Jenna.
She's out there.
I can feel it.
I think that Grunwald is starting to rub off on me.
Well, I'm not gonna challenge the logic in that.
Noel's dead, but Jenna's still out there.
- I mean, we have to find her.
- We will.
But I'm not taking any chances with you.
The last time I let you out of my sight I lost you down a rabbit hole.
It was a hotel hole, not a rabbit hole.
It's time that Hanna worry about Hanna.
Oh I'm just telling the truth There was a time when you wanted this so badly that it broke us up.
I would never let that happen again.
I know, I know.
But if you don't do this, you're gonna regret it.
So, let me worry about Jenna, okay? Right here.
.
A toast to welcome back two more Rosewood graduates.
Emily Fields, who will be coaching our Varsity swim team and Paige McCullers, our new athletic department supervisor.
- Cheers.
- Welcome.
[indistinct chatter.]
Wow, I really thought it was gonna be one of us or the other.
- I guess we're both invaluable.
- Yeah.
This is gonna be okay, right? Precise orders.
Paige, I wanna talk to you about some school committee.
There are some choice positions open at the moment.
Hey.
I texted you, you never texted me back.
Didn't have time.
Oh, did you make an appointment? We'll go to the doctors together.
I've already been.
That's why I'm late.
But, but I promised I'd come with you.
- You should have called me.
- It's my nightmare, not yours.
So, how was it, the doctor? Humiliating.
What did she tell you? That I was gonna have the baby of a perfect stranger.
What is she doing here? Paige? She's the new athletic supervisor.
Perfect! - Ali? - I'm late.
[indistinct chatter.]
Toby just got out of the hospital, but Yvonne's.
.
She's still unconscious.
All the things that have happened in this town and those two get taken out by a deer.
Was she hurt? Nicole? She broke a few bones when she was abducted.
They didn't heal properly so they have to break and reset them.
Oh.
Where is she now? A recovery facility, in New York, with her parents.
I'm glad you could go.
I tried to talk to her on the flight but she wasn't ready.
I can understand that.
[instrumental music.]
[cell phone beeps.]
What couldn't you tell me over the phone? It's just easier if I show you.
[intense music.]
Read the tag.
No.
This is.
.
No! (Spencer) It was here when I got back from the Lost Woods.
That's when I called everybody.
Guys, Noel's dead.
Jenna is wandering around in the dark.
This can't be real.
Noel's dead, but somebody else is out there.
Out there and just as crazy.
You think Jenna and Noel were working for somebody else? Or Jenna and Noel had a twisted scheme all their own and we mistakenly assumed that they were A.
D.
Sara said we were all looking for the same thing.
- What's inside? - We were waiting for you.
Oh, golly, you didn't have to do that.
[music continues.]
(Emily) Listen.
[bells tolling.]
(Emily) Wow.
(Spencer) Wow, indeed.
Guys.
[whirring.]
[music continues.]
I still say we throw it in the fireplace.
Pour some brandy over it and flambe the thing.
Maybe this is something Noel set up before the blind school.
Noel couldn't have come up with this.
And Jenna wouldn't have been able to build it.
- Spencer, Mary Drake - Mary Drake is a liar.
My mom will prove that when she gets home tomorrow.
Since we are on a first name basis with Detective Furey why don't we just turn this over to him? Well, you know how that works.
We turn this in to the police, it'll blow up before you can get it in the car.
- He wants us to play him.
- No, Em.
He wants to play with us.
[music continues.]
[whirring.]
[speaking in foreign language.]
Endgame.
It means that there's only a few pieces left to play.
Then it's all over.
What do we do? [whirring.]
Right now, we don't do anything.
Speaking of someone who's been through an engagement you two are gonna be fine.
You know what, I don't feel fine.
I feel like I need to throw up.
[sighs.]
And then this board game.
.
[sighs.]
This is too much.
Aria.
.
He tried to talk to Nicole on the plane but he couldn't.
Are you afraid he hasn't told her about the book.
I'm afraid that he hasn't told her about us.
Well, did Ezra say he wanted to postpone the wedding? We didn't talk about it.
So then proceed with plan A.
Meaning what? Aria, you're gonna plan this wedding and it's going to be waiting for him while he says goodbye to Nicole.
And trust me, he will say goodbye to her.
[instrumental music.]
[sighs.]
Athletic supervisor.
That's new.
Did they invent that job just for Paige? I don't think so.
Did you ask the school to hire her? No.
They must have wanted both of us.
Lucky for everybody.
[sighs.]
Are you gonna be okay tonight? Depends on what you mean by okay.
Pregnant, stalked, broke, alone.
I mean, if that's okay, then I'm your girl.
Ali, you're not alone.
So, you think I should tell the others? I wasn't talkin' about them.
I was talkin' about me.
This isn't your problem.
[sighs.]
Remember what I said the other night? I support you, whatever you decide.
Look, it's late.
I have to get up early in the morning.
Right.
- Night.
- Goodnight.
[indistinct chatter.]
Are you okay? - We're alive.
- Yeah.
It's too bad about Noel.
Well, no, not really.
- May I? - Go for it.
[chuckles.]
(Mona) You were always so good at this.
Claudia was a jerk for letting you go.
Claudia was generally a jerk.
[chuckles.]
Are you gonna submit it to the Philadelphia up-and-comer competition? No, I mean, I'm no where near that level.
Hanna, you have a solid portfolio and I've seen your closet.
So I have good designs.
But who the hell is Hanna Marin? You dress the right person no one will ask to see your resume.
All you need is a body with some marquee value.
Yeah, well, those don't grow on trees.
What are you doing? I have a scathingly brilliant idea.
Don't leave town.
That's what the police say in all the movies.
- Do you trust me? - Sometimes.
Make this one of those times.
[instrumental music.]
- How's the arm? - It's stiff.
- You were lucky.
- Yeah, I guess so.
Have you talked to Toby? No.
I mean, the last thing he needs is an old girlfriend complicating his life.
[scoffs.]
Did you know that Archer Dunhill was acquainted with Jenna Marshall and Noel Kahn? No.
They knew him when he was pretending to be Dr.
Rollins.
We've checked the visiting records.
Do you still think that he's out of the country? I think somebody's in France.
I'm starting to think it's not Mr.
Dunhill.
[intense music.]
- You recognize this? - Yeah.
It's the gun that Jenna Marshall shot me with.
And you're certain that you saw this gun in her hand.
Yes.
Why? Because this is a 45, and you were shot with a 22.
I saw the bullet they took out of your shoulder.
Are you saying that there were two people who were shooting at me? No, I'm saying there were two guns.
One of which is still missing.
Just like Jenna Marshall and Mary Drake.
[intense music.]
Toby still hasn't heard from Spencer? No.
I understand.
I mean, I could barely even talk to him without sounding like a stupid sympathy card.
It's a lot more complicated for Spencer.
It's hard to imagine Spencer at a loss for words.
Would you know what to say? I think this is the best one we've seen all day.
And it's a one-stop shop.
Linens, food, servers.
Check the fine print? Can you at least pretend to be excited? You're a bride.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, Aria Montgomery is a bride? Holden? I walk in, I see you, I almost had a heart attack.
Oh, no, no, no, I-I'm fine, I promise.
- What's up, Hanna? - Holden.
Good to see you.
[cell phone ringing.]
Oh, it's Mona, I should take this.
If I don't answer, she'll just keep calling back.
Sorry.
- What are you even doing here? - This is my sister's business.
She needed a brilliant, but affordable chef.
You're a chef? Yeah, I try to cultivate one new skill a year.
So you're getting married? That's me.
So who's the lucky guy? That would be Ezra.
- No kidding.
- No kidding.
And they say high school romances don't last.
Yeah.
You deserve personal attention.
Come on, I will give you the nickel tour myself.
Hmm.
Mrs.
Horowitz.
Oh, you're on the faculty now, Emily, you can call me May.
I'll try.
Uh, May, I noticed you've Paige McCullers and Alison DiLaurentis in the same committee.
Yeah, Paige stepped right up.
Yeah, I-I'm not sure that this is gonna be the most productive mix.
Is there something I should know? (Paige) Alison and I weren't exactly besties when we were students.
Emily's afraid somebody might be holding a grudge.
But that was a long time ago.
And we're all adults now.
- If there's a conflict.
.
- No conflict.
Scout's honor.
You see? Nothing to worry about.
[bell ringing.]
Well, pfft, off to the racers.
I just didn't know if it was a good idea.
You don't have to protect me from Ali.
And if you thought you had to protect Alison from me well, you're not paying attention.
You sure you don't mind driving me home? Hanna said Mona demanded a command performance.
No problem.
So what type of bride do you envision yourself? Spring, autumn or a half-priced November through March bride? Well, uh It's okay, let's find another way in.
Were you going to have the ceremony and reception at the same location? Yeah, t-that's a possibility.
We just.
.
We haven't explored that yet.
Hey, why don't I show you the fountain? It seems to be the highlight for most couples and you don't have to make a choice about moving water.
(Mona) Thank God, where have you been? - Sorry, I - Doesn't matter.
Whatever happens, I need you to be cool.
Understand? Hey, can you not? Sorry, I had to take that.
It was dad.
Senator daddy.
You must be Hanna? Hanna, Katherine Daly.
Katherine, Hanna Marin.
So your dad's Senator Daly.
I voted for him.
I live in New York.
Oh, remember to keep voting for him when we go national.
Katie, tell Hanna what you were telling me.
Well, I'm doing a fundraiser for my dad and I'd love to wear something new.
Mona showed me some of your designs on her phone.
They're terrific.
Well, you should come by the studio.
- Studio? - Mm-hmm.
Your studio.
Oh, yeah, that studio.
I have to make some calls, but I can meet you later.
- I'll text you the address.
- Perfect.
- Two hours tops.
- Yeah.
How do you know Katherine Daly? I do not know Katherine Daly.
Katherine Daly knows me.
Hanna, with your clothes on her back you'll be in the "Sunday Times" dial section before you know it.
[both chuckling.]
- Spencer.
- Hi.
Oh, honey, hi.
- Oh.
- Sorry, you're hurting me.
- My shoulder.
- I'm sorry.
I am just so happy to see you.
Your father will be home soon.
There was a problem with the passport.
He didn't want me to wait.
Honey, what happened? Uh, Alison's husband wasn't a real doctor.
Turns out that he was a crook, and he took all of her money.
Noel Kahn kidnapped Hanna.
She got away, and Noel Kahn is now dead.
Jenna Marshall shot me, probably.
Toby and Yvonne were in a car crash.
Do you want a glass of wine? I wanna know how you are.
It's gonna depend a great deal in the next few minutes.
[instrumental music.]
- Mary Drake.
- Where is she? She's temporarily unaccounted for.
What did she tell you? What do you think she told me? Spencer, tell me what she said.
Now! Please.
She, s-she said that you're not my mother.
My birth mother, that she is.
.
Okay, now would be the time to make a strong statement of denial.
Mary Drake is clinically insane! That's not a denial.
[music continues.]
I was sitting in this room, working.
.
And Jessica knocked on the door.
I hadn't said five words to her since Jason was born.
And there she was like any neighbor come to borrow a lawnmower or a husband.
And she started telling me that she had a sister a twin sister, a sister I'd never heard of.
And that's because she, the sister had problems.
.
[scoffs.]
Emotional problems.
She was in Radley.
I didn't know why Jessica was telling me all this.
I didn't care uh, how many unstable relatives she had.
And then she told me that Mary was pregnant.
And I got this terrible cold feeling in my stomach.
She told me that it, it happened before, but this time they knew who the father was.
Because Mary told them.
Apparently, your father was in a restaurant when Jessica walked in or who he thought was Jessica.
Dad did this to you.
He did this to you again? Some people have a great capacity for repeating mistakes.
And you let him? You were a part of it? A crazy woman was going to have a baby in-in Radley in a mental hospital.
And the baby would have been adopted.
I, I couldn't stand the thought of that baby.
.
[sighs.]
That child disappearing.
Being swallowed up, forgotten.
I spoke to Judge Kahn.
.
Arrangements were made.
And after all that.
.
You stayed with him.
Yes.
How could you do that? We'd made something.
I know it wasn't what we thought it would be or hoped it would be but it was ours.
And there was Melissa, and, and you.
[instrumental music.]
Were you there when I was born? Close by.
[thunder rumbling.]
[instrumental music.]
[baby cooing.]
Hi.
Five minutes.
You were in this world five minutes before I first held you.
And I've been holding on to you ever since.
Yeah, but you're not my mother.
I am your mother.
You know that.
I don't know anything! Everything that I thought I knew, everything it just came from the big bag of lies! Honey, Mary Drake will never bother you again.
I will make sure of that.
Your father and I Please just stop.
[music continues.]
I was thinkin' about you the other day.
Thinkin' about our days sneakin' around like a couple of spies.
Thought I might give you a call then just like that, I see you on TV.
- 'How are you?' - Ezra.
- Hey.
- You remember Holden.
Hey, it's great to see you again.
Hey, yeah.
Good to see you too.
Um, sorry, I need to.
.
- I need to go to New York.
- Why, is something wrong? Um, Nicole's parents called me, and they want me back up there.
- Sure.
- But I-I won't be long.
- Great.
Okay.
- Uh, great seeing you.
Same.
- What? - Who's Nicole? Why don't you try this one? Uh, it's gorgeous.
My mother would kill me.
It's a bit bold for Georgetown.
Um, look, Katie, I would be thrilled if you wore one of my dresses.
Absolutely.
- Done.
- Terrific.
Have the boss lady call me, and we'll work out the details.
- My boss? - Mona.
She has a real eye for talent.
You're so lucky she found you.
- Right.
- Listen, I gotta go.
But have Mona pick our top three and I'll send someone to pick them up later.
And text me your Instagram handle.
I'll tag you.
Did I hear that correctly? Well, I know what I heard.
What did you hear? Well, it sounded like Mona was trying to push you off the label.
Whose idea was that? As I was saying, I thought this could be an informal meeting, no bad ideas.
The way Mrs.
Horowitz, May, explained it to me we need to make it easier for the parents to interact with the teachers.
Emily and I were talking about how we could use social media.
I just wanna say how great it is that Paige is really pitching in on this.
Really taking the lead.
Thanks, Alison.
So Seriously though, it's such a step forward for you.
Usually people who are new, they, I don't know go with something safer, like a pep rally but you're really pushing your personal comfort zone.
- It's not that big a deal.
- Oh, don't be modest.
Some of us here remember what you used to be like.
Don't we, Emily? I mean, May, you remember when she was a student.
.
We always wondered where all that aggression came from.
Stuff that made her such a great competitor.
I remember she had a lot of team spirit.
Yeah, but it was more than that.
Right, Emily? I bet Mrs.
Horowitz remembers how you were too, Alison.
You're pretty unforgettable.
- Thank you.
- It wasn't a compliment.
Uh, how about we take a five minute break, I think? Sure, if Paige thinks she needs a break I understand her feeling a little overwhelmed.
Stop it! Okay, um, let's shelve this discussion and move on to the bake sale.
[intense music.]
[cell phone beeps.]
[music continues.]
[whirring.]
[music continues.]
- [bell dings.]
- [bell dings.]
[music continues.]
[indistinct chatter on PA.]
- Hi.
- Hey.
[sighs.]
- I'm so sorry.
- I meant to call you.
No, you didn't have to call me.
I, uh, I talked to Marco.
He told me what happened.
Are you, are you alright? Uh, yeah.
I'm, I'm okay.
Maybe this is finally over.
Yeah, maybe.
Toby, how is Yvonne? Not good.
Is there anything that you need? Tried to make her leave with me and this is what happens.
Hey, you can't blame yourself, okay? The world doesn't work like that.
Maybe not the rest of the world, but this is Rosewood.
Yeah, I keep on trying to tell myself that this is just a town but I can't make a convincing argument.
The evidence doesn't really support the premise.
Maybe this town has to disappear before we can leave.
Yeah, maybe.
But we keep trying.
So we'd beat on boats against the current.
We will get out of here.
We will.
Yvonne will get better, and we will all make our escape.
[sighs.]
I wish I could see that.
You should probably try putting on your glasses, old man.
[chuckles.]
Yeah.
Thank you so much for coming.
[music continues.]
- You left in a hurry.
- I had things to do.
- What was that all about? - What was what about? We were in a teacher's lounge not the cafeteria before homeroom.
And what is it, are you afraid of Paige or you just felt like punching a familiar face? I take that you and Sabrina are still on hold.
See, this is the part of you that I hate.
When someone gets close, it makes you itch.
So you swap people away like they are bugs.
Please.
Just go away.
That's what you want me to do? God, Ali why do we have to keep showing you that we love you? I keep getting mail addressed to Elliott Rollins.
Letters, packages.
That's what he left me with.
Sports wear catalogues and a baby.
My life is a steaming hot mess.
Everyone's life is a hot mess.
Em, you and Paige you are not together now, but you were.
You have real memories.
None of my memories are real.
They're all lies! [sighs.]
Ali, that other night when you kissed me was that because you wanted to or because you didn't want me to leave? I don't know.
Please don't kiss me again.
Not until you know.
[instrumental music.]
Okay, so I just got off the phone with Katherine and she was raving about your dresses.
You killed it, Han.
[sighs.]
I already have her committed to wear one of your pieces to an event and one of your pieces while she's out doing normal things.
Not bad for a day's work.
So when do you think it'll be ready? I don't know.
Maybe you should ask my boss.
Did you guys go see your boss? We couldn't even get there one day.
Hit the brakes, what's happening? Katherine thinks I work for you.
Did you tell her that this was your business? No.
Never.
It must be my natural aura of authority and knowledge.
Well, you can take your aura and shove it right up - You have it so wrong.
- I just want my life back.
Okay.
I wanna make something beautiful.
No more snarfing, no more shovels.
I mean, this is the first time in my life when I thought that I was doing something important, and then you have to Whoa, I'm trying to help your business grow.
There is no other motive, I promise.
I was just excited for us to finally work together.
You know, on something other than kidnapping my ex-boyfriend? Call Katherine.
I will call her right now and straighten her out.
And I want business cards.
Fine.
It'll say you're the boss in gold-leaf embossed, I swear.
Hi, Katie.
Yes, all is well.
But I just need to clear up one small microscopic detail with you.
[whirring.]
[bell dings.]
[intense music.]
[music continues.]
"Dearest, it wasn't supposed to be this way.
I did what I did because people like my sister and the Hastings deserve to be punished.
I wanted to hurt them but I never thought there would be someone else who could be hurt.
You come out of hateful act.
But that does not mean that you are hateful.
I'm sorry that you'll be a baby born in a mad house.
Like a mysterious orphan in an old book.
A book filled with calamity and misfortune but perhaps a happy ending.
I write this because I'm ashamed.
I need someone to forgive me.
And the only person who might be able to do that is you.
Someday.
Be safe.
Your mother, Mary.
" [instrumental music.]
Spencer.
[intense music.]
- Hey.
- Hey.
I talked to Ali.
I thought you would.
And I think you can expect an apology from her.
I don't need it, and I don't want it.
I want to explain what's been going on.
Emily, don't.
Don't make excuses for her, it's demeaning.
Ali did terrible things, okay, but she's been through so much.
She's not the same person she was.
Who is she now? The kidnapped girl who never got kidnapped? The struggling teacher with a sister in a mental hospital? The poor wife abandoned by her conman husband? You ever noticed how she's always the victim? Always the one who needs to be rescued? I don't know anyone who doesn't need a little rescue.
Some people make a habit of getting rescued.
Same way, other people make a habit out of jumping in after them.
[cell phone beeps.]
We decided together not to play.
What gave you the right to do this? This does.
We don't even know if that's real.
It goes with what Spencer's mom said.
Okay, I mean, Mrs.
Hastings, I.
.
I mean, it just keeps getting worse.
- How is this even possible? - I'm sorry.
I wasn't thinking.
Behaved like a bastard.
Well, if the note really did come out of that thing I say we get a crowbar and see what else is in there.
It's not a pinata, Hanna.
- It's a doomsday machine.
- It's about to be garbage.
Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! [whirring.]
[music continues.]
(Spencer) That's us, digging up Rollins.
A.
D.
knows we killed him.
- [beeps.]
- (Aria) What the hell does that mean? Thank you.
You said you'd tell me today about the game.
[intense music.]
Endgame.
