dammit

1 BASH: Hey, Katherine.
KATHERINE: Yes, Bash.
[faint doo-wop music playing.]
[chuckles.]
"I got something to say".
Uh-huh? "The river was deep, but I swam it".
You skipped a part.
Come on.
"The future is ours, so let's plan it".
- Now you skipped a part.
- Yeah, your part.
Eye for an eye, right? [chuckles.]
Damn it, Kath'rine.
[laughs.]
- I I skipped a syllable.
- I'll allow it.
[laughs.]
Come on, when are you gonna tell me? I'm not gonna tell you.
I'm gonna show you.
Come on, you know surprises make me antsy.
[chuckles.]
Yeah, well, I think you're gonna like this one.
[birds chirping.]
[engine rumbling.]
It's a work in progress, but it's ours.
You bought us a house? Call it an anniversary gift.
[chuckles.]
I can see it in you, Katherine.
You're getting tired back there.
You can tell me you're not, but I I see it every day.
Bang-A-Rang's our home.
Come on.
And this could be our home.
Who's the one getting tired? [chuckles.]
It's just getting dangerous, fast, and I I don't I can't see what's coming.
I used to be able to, but Burt, he's getting Unpredictable.
I don't know how else to say it.
"The future is ours".
[whoops.]
[peaceful music.]
[birds chirping.]
[electricity buzzing.]
LYLA: So I had an idea for Harold's ending.
RITA: Who's Harold? Harold Horpus.
I told you about him.
Right.
Sorry.
Tell me about him again.
Harold goes looking for his why in the forest of orange dreams.
And although it's a long, long journey, it still seems easy enough at first.
But what he finds surprises him.
And what does he find? Obstacles, a lot of them, the whole forest filled with an army meant to teach him one lesson.
Which is? That's where I keep getting stuck 'cause I haven't gotten that far yet, but I will.
ANNOUNCER (on TV): Making sure that nothing flies away.
You see, folks, it isn't about what they say they can see.
It isn't about the pictures they show us, and we all need to realize that.
These hoaxes are a dime [birds cawing.]
Mornin', Uncle Burt.
Why do you keep calling me that? You, uh you married my aunt, Veronica.
Veronica, eh? Yeah.
Yeah, Veronica didn't last long.
Hey, I just want you to know how much it means for me to be here.
I mean, I live for this.
That's good.
Good.
And, uh, speaking of which, I was wondering if you heard about what I'd found.
[exhales.]
[bottles clinking.]
Hey, how you get up so early? I always stay up for the sunrise.
Fuck outta here with that.
[groans.]
Thinking a lot about what you said last night 'Bout being a Brawler, doing horrible things.
I think you're trying to scare me off 'cause you think I wouldn't be able to handle it.
You're a violent person, Matty.
So is everyone.
So are you.
And I hate myself every day for it.
I brought you with me yesterday because, sure, I knew if I needed you to, you would've been able to handle it.
Then bump me up.
Jukes said it himself, we're at war.
And we're gonna win that war with or without you as a Brawler.
If you let Burt in, if you let him lead you down his road of family and so-called fucking greater things, you'll give up more than you ever thought.
And I'm not gonna watch you mourn the man you used to be.
You'll always have a home with us, Matty Till you're ready to leave.
[car door slams.]
[engine turns over.]
[groans.]
[groans.]
Sorry for the hit.
My friend, she [chuckles.]
she's still learning her own strength.
Mm.
It's okay if you don't remember me.
I don't, but I heard you might be around.
Last time I saw you, you were such a tiny thing.
But I remember when Burt gave you that tattoo.
I told him that you were too young, that no matter how little the ink, the pain would be too much.
[peaceful music.]
He did it anyway.
But you didn't even make a peep.
You just looked at me [chuckles.]
Same way you're looking at me right now, with those eyes and that strength Which is when I knew no matter where you came from, Burt was right: you were a Harlow.
Where I came from? Have you ever felt fully right there, like you really belonged? Well, from what I heard, you sure didn't.
[chuckles.]
I'm sure you've heard a lot about me Which is why you should know that whatever they said happened, that was my home.
Meredith.
What should I do with you? If I send you back, who's to say that you won't tell them where I am? But you also don't know who knows that I left with Ethan.
[chuckles.]
Unless you don't plan on sending him back.
Then you've got a missing Pinup and a missing Phoenix and a whole lot of people who are gonna come looking for answers.
You do know what they would do to him, don't you, if they ever found out? Because that young man means a whole lot to me, and I have a feeling if you've gotten to know him the way that I have He might mean something to you too.
[engine revving.]
[tires squeal.]
[indistinct chatter.]
We're gonna need to talk about Matty.
[suspenseful music.]
AVRON: I found it over here.
JOEL: What's that got to do with Matty? AVRON: Patrons aren't allowed back here.
And even if they were, they wouldn't be with a giant bag of fucking guns.
[chuckles.]
Out of everyone here, everyone who knew Katherine Harlow, you wanna point the finger at Matty? Wonder why that is.
BURT: Joel.
It's not just that.
What is it? - I think - Huh? - I think Matty's pissed, right? - Yeah? Yeah he's getting overlooked over and over.
It's all he complains about.
So what if someone saw an opportunity in him? What about you, huh? Little funny how you found that bag so easy, ain't it? Joel.
Joel! [tense music.]
No one's saying it's Matty for sure, but we gotta look at it.
DORIS: So.
Are we clear? I gave you the route.
And you'll text me when you leave? [car engine rumbling.]
I never got my gun back.
Ethan here has it.
And when he feels comfortable, he'll give it to you.
[car engine roars.]
MEREDITH: So how do you know her? I was working in a restaurant she was running back home.
Why'd she choose you? Look, if if I'm honest, I've had no idea what she's been up to.
She hasn't told me a goddamned thing.
It's just [groans.]
Nothing with her ever makes any sense.
[tires squeal.]
Shit, Jesus! I'd like my gun back, please.
Well, I I I I don't want to give you back your gun yet.
Ethan, my gun.
Why? Because it's very special to me and I'd like it back now.
Why why why now? What, do you think I'm gonna fuckin' shoot you? Yeah.
Yeah, maybe.
Maybe.
[sighs.]
Were you a part of that the other night? ETHAN: What? When they came in to rob us, were you a part of that? N-no, no, we weren't even there.
Mm-hmm.
Because a whole lot of people I knew, a whole lot of people I knew my entire life, they're dead.
And I talked a lot about leaving.
I know that, and I meant it.
[soft dramatic music.]
But what I said last night about finally realizing I was home? I meant that too.
And I've heard a lot of stories about what may or may not have happened to Katherine Harlow.
To be honest with you, I don't really know the truth.
But when she and my dad are finally reunited, they can have all sorts of fun killing each other.
Know what I can't allow? Is you.
I can't allow you to go back with me if you had anything to do with that.
I I I didn't have anything to do with it.
I swear.
Look, all my life I've felt like nothing but fucking alone until I got here, and if it weren't for you, I wouldn't have realized that.
If it weren't for if it weren't that, you know That I think I've I've fallen for you.
Blegh.
Come on, man.
[sighs.]
[engine turns over.]
I won't tell anyone.
[tires squeal.]
[indistinct chatter.]
MATTY: Where you been? ETHAN: Uh.
Been a weird night.
Yeah, tell me about it.
Drink? Yeah.
Went to a puppet show.
Hmm.
- JOEL: Matty.
- Yeah.
Where's Johnson? MATTY: Around, probably.
What's going on? Burt wants to talk.
You too.
[taps chair.]
Have a seat, Matty.
Hey, Burt.
Um Avron has this theory about you that we just can't ignore.
Uh, what? Yeah, he [clears throat.]
He thinks that, uh, you've been working for my sister.
What? My sister, she killed a whole bunch of our family back in the day, and, uh, and then just recently, she even put us at war with the Ghouls.
And that part doesn't really bother me that much, but the point is, Matty, is that she's put us through some hell, and we're still in it.
You killed someone, right? Yeah.
BURT: You know what I noticed long time ago? Every man that I've killed, starting with my father, there's this these moments right before they slip.
[gasps.]
Get your fuckin' hands off me.
Take your fucking hands off of me.
[gasping.]
What I was saying is, right before they slip, there's nothing but honesty in their eyes because a dying man can't lie.
[wheezing.]
So, again, are you helping my sister? No, no.
Matty! [tense music.]
Are you helping Katherine? MATTY: [wheezing and gasping.]
[hoarsely.]
I don't even know I don't even know her.
I don't even know Matty, are you helping Katherine? I s - BURT: Matty! - I swear, I swear, I swear.
[growls.]
Matty.
I swear, I swear, I swear I sw [hacking and wheezing.]
Well, okay then.
MATTY: [coughing and wheezing.]
[Pale Lips' Doo Wah Diddy Shim Sham Shimmy playing.]
You've never talked about her.
Who's that? Katherine Harlow.
What do you think that I should've, uh, talked about? Why she did what she did.
I'm not quite sure myself.
Hmm.
My mother, how'd you meet her? I've talked about that.
Never enough.
What exactly do you want to know, Meredith? Just tell me now right here that we've always been Harlows and I will believe you, I will.
Or you can tell me why I've never felt like I belonged.
Family isn't always about blood, Meredith.
You can always choose it.
[film projector whirring.]
I feel like I spent my whole life trying to find it, that family.
Is that why you built it? [Mazzy Star's Blue Light.]
Sure, you build a family, but does it fill the void? I mean, does any of it? HOPE SANDOVAL: There's a blue light BURT: So that's where you lived before you could remember.
And from what I heard, your father was a a decent man, wasn't rich but he did well.
Perfect house, perfect street.
Only problem was, he wasn't perfect, not that any of us are.
They'd find him down at the 707 frequently getting drunker than a long owl.
And back then, Katherine had a little side scheme kinda like what you got going on: selling shit from the outside.
So one night, your father, he couldn't pay.
He got aggressive, laid some hands he shouldn't have laid.
Then he ran off.
And that sister of mine, she has a wicked temper.
She wanted to make an example out of an unruly patron.
Now, I don't know when Katherine went wrong.
All I know is, I should've known a long time ago what she was capable of.
HOPE SANDOVAL: It's sailing IRMA: What's her name? [laughs.]
How the hell should I know, Irma? We can call her Meredith.
My mother's name was Meredith.
KATHERINE: Sure.
HOPE SANDOVAL: Crashing me by She killed my parents.
Yes, she did.
SANDOVAL: Crashing me by MEREDITH: I don't get it.
Why did you never tell me? Why lie to me like that? I'm not sure I knew what to say.
All I know is that when Katherine brought you here, you became a Harlow.
Always will be No matter where you go.
DORIS: I know I've let you down.
[sniffles and clears throat.]
And believe me when I say that the three of you are the last three people that I would ever want to let down.
I know, I [exhales.]
Haven't been all that up front.
But [chuckles.]
What we've been able to accomplish together, failed mission and all I just know we're gonna figure this out.
I know that the four of us are going to be able to get what we came down here for.
Because we're The Monster Ring.
Right? For now.
Right.
So, um Money.
[sniffles.]
There's some money that they travel with, and then we'll get Ethan out and then this will all be over.
Also, Earl, I'm sorry to say that today is my anniversary.
It it's your anniversary? DORIS: That means I'll be stepping out tonight alone.
Well, almost alone.
[bacon sizzling.]
[eerie whoosh.]
[distorted rattling.]
[bacon sizzling.]
QUEENIE: For a minute, I thought you finally split.
Just took a break.
I took your girl for a spin.
I hope you don't mind.
Yeah, which one? - Gladys.
- Gladys? How the hell you get her started? Where'd you go, Meredith? You always said you never knew my mother.
That's right.
Did you also know that Burt wasn't my father? I did, yeah.
Which means you've been feeding me a load of bullshit my entire life.
If that's what you want to call it, sure.
Bullshit.
Do you know where Burt found me? - The circus.
- [chuckles.]
The Traveling Shorn Brothers, yeah.
[inhales deeply.]
Oh, I went to every corner of this goddamned continent.
I put on more shows for more people than I ever thought possible.
All of that over the years and still I'd never seen anything like the shit I've seen here.
[tender piano music.]
Lotta people come, lotta people go.
Violence, sure.
But the one thing this place has given me that the Shorn Brothers never could? Hmm? I think in your heart, you know just as well as I do.
Burt said that Katherine killed my real parents.
Is that true? If that's what Burt said what happened, then I guess that's just what happened.
Yeah, well, I know where she is.
Katherine.
[slide clicks.]
[bass-heavy dramatic music.]
Avron.
Fuck do you want? It's Bru.
He's asking for you, where you found the bag.
[high-pitched ringing.]
[breathing heavily.]
[hammer clicks.]
Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait! What the fuck? What are you doing? Why you why are you running around saying that shit about Matty? Huh? What are you gonna do, Ethan? It's bad enough you did this.
Now you're gonna shoot me? Come on, china doll.
Holy shit.
[chuckles.]
It's you.
[crickets chirping.]
[eerie music.]
[sighs.]
Why didn't you say anything? I had to sort things out on my own.
Where were you? I took some time to myself.
I was approached by someone I didn't know, told me I had to go with him.
What'd he look like? Scars on his neck, I don't know.
She was in room 126, though.
You told her Katherine killed her parents.
BURT: Since when are you the patron saint of telling the truth? She would've grown up in the sewer.
I think we both know that.
I want her to stay, and so do you.
So let's round up a few.
[ominous music.]
[car engine rumbling.]
You're alone.
So are you.
That's how you wanna do it? Depends whether you're gonna put up a fight.
All right then.
I'm gonna need you to step inside, Bash.
Bash.
[shotgun slide clicks.]
Bash.
Go on.
[suspenseful music.]
The hell's wrong with you? I fucked up.
[suspenseful synth music.]
[tires squealing.]
Looking for a woman, might be staying here, either blonde or brunette.
Hmm, blonde or brunette.
Let me think.
No.
EARL: You a mechanic? You got a lot of friends.
A few.
They all mechanics too? [door handle clicks.]
QUEENIE: I think I got an idea where she is.
JOEL: How 'bout you? EARL: What, friends? JOEL: Maybe staying here? EARL: Nah.
I like to ride solo.
I'm a drifter.
Only friend of mine is the open road.
Happened to your neck? An old war wound.
Looks pretty fresh.
Some battles don't age.
[hammer clicks.]
What you got there? That's a lot of questions from a man I do not know.
[tires squealing and engines revving.]
HORACE: Joel.
They know where she is.
[tires squealing.]
[engines revving.]
DORIS: You've kept the place alive.
BASH: Wasn't ever gonna let it go.
You let me go.
You let go long before.
Is that right? I tried to tell you.
I tried to tell you that things were getting dark.
You let them.
You stood by, and you let them.
You fell for all of his nonsense.
And you killed Percy.
He loved you like a sister.
And I, him.
Like a brother.
You did it because you knew You would never be able to forgive me.
And now you're back for me.
Among others.
But that's not why we're here, Bash.
[Rocky Horror Picture Show's Dammit Janet playing.]
- BRAD: Hey, Janet.
- JANET: Yes, Brad? BRAD: I've got something to say.
JANET: Uh-huh? BRAD: I really loved the skillful way you beat the other girls to the bride's bouquet.
