-Keep your eyes open!
Can you tell me what your name is?
Seo
-Eun-ju.
-Great, and where are you?
What day is it? Can you tell me
today's date? Please tell me!
You had your second child today.
What day is it?
The 16th.
-October 16th.
-Her birthday, yes.
Just hang in there.
[suspenseful music plays]
We need more blood.
And add some more FFP too.
[monitor beeping]
We need CPR.
We've gotta start compressions.
[Eun-won] Handle the packing,
close her up.
-Bring me the crash cart.
-[Yi-young] I need gauze.
Surgical drape.
I can take over.
[panting]
-[Sang-hyeon] Check her epinephrine level.
-[monitor beeping]
-[monitor flatlines]
-[Eun-ju's parents crying]
[Eun-ju's mother] You still need to feed

They need you.
You wanted to meet your baby so much.
[crying] Oh.

-[Eun-ju's father sobbing] Honey!
[liquid drips]
[Eun-ju's mom] Eun-ju!
[gasping]
[Eun-ju's mother]
We all still need you, Eun-Ju.
Don't leave us like this, you can't!

How am I supposed to live without you?

RESIDENT PLAYBOOK
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
Ah. Dr. Da-hye's on break for now, right?
Yeah.
She was pretty devastated
by the transfer patient's death.
She kept crying about it non-stop
for days.
I completely get it.
We saw her getting wheeled past us
as they brought her down.
Just a glimpse,
but I've still had nightmares.
She bled so much, they gave her
almost 30 units of blood
after they had to take out her uterus.
When she got DIC, there was
nothing much to be done at that point.
It's awful.
Postpartum hemorrhage
is the worst thing in the world.
-What causes it to start, anyway?
-Good question.
-What does cause it to start?
-[all] Hello.
Truth is, no one knows.
Not only that, but anticipating
which patient will develop PPH
is currently impossible.
We can't predict or prevent bleeding.
But we can make sure
we're ready to handle it.
And to be ready, we must study
the subject thoroughly.
To accomplish that, we'll increase
our study sessions to twice a week.
[both groan] Professor!
You all seem so excited,
how about three times a week?
This week, we'll learn how a PPH situation
can be ideally handled,
and what sort of actions we can take
to best address it.
Show me this.
Professor Kong gave us this packet
about PPH in one of the sessions.
Mm.
Forget about this.
-Use mine.
-[Jae-il] Okay.
Starting today, in these sessions,
we'll learn very important things.
Not just theoretical,
but practical knowledge.
So I will also not tolerate anyone
nodding off or getting drowsy
Or any types of similar distractions.
Got it. [clears throat]
Let's get started.
The most important thing
in a PPH situation
is to notice the bleeding as soon
as possible and move quickly.
PPH?
-But I already covered that with you all.
-Yes.
Hang on, so why is
Professor Seo Jung-man
Sorry. Seo Jung-min re-teaching it?
Ah, with what happened recently,
she's focusing on practical knowledge
to make it simpler for us all to manage.
Simpler? Hold up. You're saying
I made it hard to understand?
-No.
-[scoffs]
She thinks she can teach about PPH
better than I can?
She has to be better at everything.
She's such a raging narcissist.
Our surgery today is at 3:00?
Uh, actually, it looks like Professor Seo
planned for six surgeries,
then there was an emergency C-section
she had to do, and a spinal block failed,
so that surgery got
pushed over to GA, and so,
it ended up taking a lot longer
than anyone expected it would.
So what? When is ours?
Around 5:00 p.m.
The patient's been told, I made sure.
What?
Hey, this is the only surgery
I have scheduled.
You really expect me
to wait until 5:00 p.m. tonight?
Uh Well, Professor Seo has been
given priority use of the OR today
[scoffs] She's controlling
the entire OR schedule, huh?
She wants to push me around.
In that case, make Anesthesia
open another OR for us.
They said they could do
two surgeries at once
after they wrap up the GS surgery
planned for 3:00,
but Professor Seo has booked
that room too.
I'm entitled to one.
Why does she get to take everything?
Wait a minute. Is this an attempt
to assert dominance?
It's not! I would guess she's probably
way too overloaded
to pull anything like that right now.
Yi-young said she has to attend a meeting
with the hospital director
at about 6:30 or so,
and needs to finish all her work
before she goes,
so she's asking you to understand
the issue.
-Why's she meeting the hospital director?
-I wouldn't know, sorry.
That little
Tell Jung-min I go into surgery at 3:00,
and there's no way I'm waiting until 5:00.
Make sure you book that room for me
or else You got that?
Oh, uh
[sighs]
How am I supposed to do all that, huh?
[Jung-min] You told Professor Kong
her surgery's been pushed back?
[Yi-young] Yes.
She knows she has the final slot today.
-[cell phone ringing]
-And she agreed? Didn't fight you?
[Yi-young] I don't know. All I care about
right now is my own survival.
Oh, I mean,
you told me I had to make sure you'd
be done with your surgeries by 6:00, so
If I didn't, I know
you'd scold me about it.
Well, good job.
That's a change. What's going on here?
Okay, I'm grabbing Tuesday for
Professor Kong's induction case. Fair?
No. Professor Seo asked me
to get a room for an induction that day.
Look, Professor Seo booked three more
on Monday already, though, right?
Yeah.
So we need two on Tuesday.
You don't have many patients,
we have a ton.
-Why not do Thursday?
-She'll be at a conference that day.
-You can book Thursday.
-Professor Seo
JM's going too.
She'll be pissed if I don't get Tuesday.
And Ggong? Knowing her,
you think she'll be all right with that?
Ugh, this is really annoying. Why don't
they manage it between themselves?
Exactly.
Don't you think the two professors
are a bit weird lately?
They always were,
so I'm not surprised they still are.
Yeah, I know that, still [inhales]
it seems they may have gotten worse.
How so?
Their rivalry, you know?
They're so childish.
I mean, one bristles when someone
mentions Seo Jung-min at all.
The other blocks Gi-sun from
ever getting anything she wants.
And we end up dealing with all this,
stuck in the middle of their crazy fight.
-Hello! Hello!
-What is it? Why are you here again?
Im Dong-ju's got an emergency C-section.
-But you're in Gynecology.
-Yes, I finished that work.
Then why aren't you getting out of here?
-Why be here?
-[Sa-bi] How can you go home
when it's an incarceration case?
What do you mean? Just split and run.
[Sa-bi] It's a really rare case,
so this could be my only chance to see it.
-You're not going to sit in?
-I'm going.
-Home, right?
-All right. See you later.
Hello.
Hey. You're done in the ward,
why aren't you heading out?
There's a surgery I want to sit in on.
You want to see this surgery so much,
you're willing to stay late
instead of going home?
-Yes.
-[chuckles] That's fair.
This isn't an easy surgery,
and it does involve a unique approach.
From a resident's point of view,
it'll be fascinating
to see the manual technique involved.
-Yeah.
-I think it's truly impressive.
[chuckles]
-Aw
-Well, then.
Where are you going?
The room changed, it's here.
It's not. Professor Im's
doing the C-section in OR 6.
[chuckles]
Hey, you're on
the Gynecology rotation, though.
Yes, but I heard incarceration cases
are unique from the first incision,
so I really want to see this.
I'll see you tomorrow.
Huh. [chuckles] What the
Wow, what am I going to do with her?
[objects rattling]
Hey!
Why did you call me
when you haven't finished prepping?
[Jae-il sighs]
Should I have stayed back
to watch the surgery?
Don't you have dinner plans?
Dinner plans can get rescheduled.
Sa-bi said this case is pretty rare.
Incar su round?
Incarceration.
Yeah, that's the one.
Is this really about the surgery?
Good question.
Is it the surgery you'd like to see?
Or the Hello Girl you'd possibly run into?
Why would I wanna see her?
What do you mean?
What do you think? You follow the
poor woman every chance you get lately.
-So I was wondering.
-Follow her? When?
-Ever since the karaoke room dance.
-Hmm.
That's just 'cause
we're nearly done as R1s,
then we're all R2s.
Sa-bi explains things well,
so I end up learning a lot.
She can take a complicated idea
and talk it through so I understand.
All right, sure.
If you get together, you better
tell us first, before anyone else.
After all, we're together
16-plus hours a day.
If we hear it from rumors,
I'll be pissed off.
You writing a screenplay?
You're being ridiculous.
[cell phone ringing]
Hello?
At the hospital.
Oh! Yeah, that sounds
uh, fine.
Yes.
Hmm? Who was that?
-Do you have a
-My brother-in-law. Nobody else.
I'm getting a ride,
so he called to say here's here.
Oh! Hey, drop me off at the bus station,
then, please, okay?
-It's close by and on your way.
-I can go too!
We could meet your sister's husband.
-No you can't!
-Whoa, hey!
-Why not?
-You just can't.
Family discussion.
-It's really private.
-I'll cover both my ears, then. Eh.
-Yeah! I can too!
-No, you can't.
Please? I don't have the energy
to make myself walk.
-Can't you?
-No can do.
-Come on, you totally could!
-Uh
With him, it's just
He's really shy.
Carpooling with someone he doesn't know
is hard.
Next time, okay? I'll give you a ride
another day.
Go.
Oh Yi-young
you're a real jerk.
Later, then.
Yeah, bye.
Such a jerk!
[sighs]
[mouthing]
What? Should I go to you?
What, what? Eating?
Go?
Oh, I missed you too!
Just wait in the car for you?
You getting in, too?
What should I not do?
You want me to wait in the car, right?
Well, come on!
What happens if we get seen?
You told me before, that folks
would assume we were carpooling.
Back then,
that was actually the truth, so it worked.
-Now it's completely different.
-[laughs]
You lost me, I'm sorry. We're still
carpooling the way we always have been.
It's just
If anyone at work learns about us
-I just don't want anyone to know.
-Why is that?
In case you tell someone we're dating,
and we break up soon afterward,
is that it?
How can you say that?
We're never breaking up.
[laughing]
Hey, listen, I've been keeping
the R1s in the dark.
I should be the one to tell them first.
But where do I even start
to explain all this?
We first started as only in-laws,
nothing else,
we were living under the same roof.
We didn't plan on things to go this way,
but now that it happened
This is giving me a bad headache. I can't.
They're your friends. You better tell them
or it'll hurt their feelings.
No, they're not friends.
I don't think they like me at all.
-They like you quite a lot, I'd say.
-I worry what they'll think.
Besides, everybody in the hospital
could get the wrong idea.
I'm worried that because of the mistakes
I make on the daily,
they'll think I've gotten distracted
by "love."
I don't care what people think about me.
But I don't want you to get hurt.
You're my oppa.
Sorry?
What?
Boyfriend. You are, aren't you?
You're my oppa.
Well, I suppose so. Sure. I mean, yeah,
sort of, 'cause you're younger.
Hey, act more casual.
We're a couple.
I can't yet, it's too soon.
You always say Dr. Oh at work,
so call me by my name instead.
You're right.
All right, how about, uh
Well [exhales] Yi
Oh Yi-young.
Dr. Oh! I can't do it yet!
Let's just go home, then, Dr. Ku Do-won.
Gosh.
[Joo-young] That's probably enough.
OH YI-YOUNG
WANT TO GO FOR A WALK?
[Seung-won] You know how she eats.
KU DO-WON
SOUNDS GOOD
-[chuckles]
-Then do it properly. Hey.
-What?
-You dating or what?
Dating?
What makes you say that?
-I am.
-What?
-Sorry?
-Wow!
See? I totally knew it!
You've had your phone in your hand
for the past 24 hours.
Either sit down like normal
or get out of here. Who is it?
-Someone at the hospital?
-[gasps]
-[Joo-young] Oh! Did you know, Do-won?
-Huh? Mm, sorry?
-What? I
-He didn't know about it.
He's completely clueless about this stuff.
So who is it?
Oh, never mind. Don't date anybody!
-Why not?
-Sorry?
Obviously, it's some hospital
co-worker of hers, right?
I don't want her dating someone,
breaking up
and creating drama for everyone.
She's as fickle as the wind,
I'm telling you.
She falls in and out of love so fast,
you get whiplash trying to track it.
[scoffs] That's not true.
Actually, I've never had
a boyfriend before.
This is my first love.
Oh, please. [laughs]
Won-u, Sang-min, and
Who was it? What was his name?
Huni-huni? Is that it?
No, it was something like Soni-soni
Don't you remember?
No, first I'm hearing it.
I don't know who they are.
The point is, you shouldn't
run around the hospital dating people,
making your coworkers uncomfortable.
You'll work with them
another four years, at least.
That's why you should always avoid
dating in the office,
or friends-to-lovers things.
It's all too hard to navigate.
Your romance started in the office.
Well, if you're going to get married,
it's okay.
-I will, then.
-Oh, my God!
[coughs]
Bro, do I look like an exotic plant
that needs watering?
This is so gross, ugh!
Anyway, what did you say? Get married?
-You're gonna You are?
-[sniffs]
[sighs] Christ. Well,
I'll be at the hospital before long.
Tell him to say hello.
We better get introduced soon.
[scoffs] Hey, I was just kidding around.
Looks like I got you.
[sighs] Are you serious?
Hey, don't mess around about
a thing like that, you got it?
-Why are you yelling?
-Hey, I wasn't yelling!
[sighs] Jeez.
Those sprouts get treated nicer than I do!
Oh, what's wrong with her?
Don't take it to heart. She's upset
there's one more blood sample still.
-They take it in two days.
-[Joo-young] I'm not upset at all.
Not like it matters now. [sighs]
The first blood sample they tested
as ambiguous, so I took a second.
That was ambiguous too.
The next sample has to double the levels
of the second. There's no chance.
Still, you've had two lines
in all your pregnancy tests.
That happened in the third IVF round,
and that didn't work out.
-Don't get too hopeful.
-I won't, I'll do like you say.
Oh, well, one more chance. I mean
If it happens, good.
We'll be fine no matter what.
Yeah.
Oh, I can't go to the hospital
with her then.
-Could one of you go? It'd mean so much.
-I'll see if I can make it.
That's unlike you. You must be busy.
Oh. The nanoparticles project
he's on is going strong.
He's achieved deterministic
statistical optimization.
What? What does what again?
You take nanoparticles,
you layer a polymer coating
on the surface to modify [groans]
Don't bother asking.
Do you know who kicked off the research?
My senior, Oh Joo-young,
who's the best researcher they had there.
Gosh, that project was everything,
I was in charge of the whole thing
while I was working there until I quit.
[sighs]
See how far it's gotten since?
What am I doing now?
Uh, that's not it. Sorry, I was saying,
since my hard work went into it earlier,
you should work hard and give it your all.
Of course.
Everything will work out for us.
-I said don't get hopeful, didn't I?
-Yeah, all right.
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
[babies crying]
[both] I'll take that.
-Professor Seo has a patient
-Be quiet.
-Uh, Professor Kong has a patient that
-Keep it down. You'll wake the babies.
I don't care. Why don't you come to
an agreement and let me know?
-[sighs] They're always arguing.
-[Nam-kyung sighs]
Na Hyo-jin is at 33 weeks in the MFICU
with preeclampsia.
Her BP has been stable so far,
but it spiked to over 150 this morning,
and she also has a headache.
The baby's coming out today.
Chae Yu-ra is at 33 weeks
in the MFICU with PPROM.
She's had a fever since morning.
Her baby needs to come out today,
but its EBW is only 1,900 grams.
[gasps] Oh, really?
Ours is only1,800 grams.
The baby's smaller, and even more fragile.
My patient is suspected
to have chorioamnionitis.
My patient could end up with more issues.
Transfer yours to another hospital.
-I said no.
-I can't either.
Ggong says if I transfer this patient,
I might as well leave with her.
Better leave, then.
[Nam-kyung] Not without that incubator.
-What are you doing?
-Where're you going?
Dr. Myeong's doing a delivery
and says the baby isn't doing well.
Move, please. Thanks.
Hey, watch your feet.
[sighs]
[sighs] He just stole that
right out from under us!
You need to come fix this right away.
See, my mother's IV, is leaking some more.
Ah, all right, I'll come check.
I'd appreciate it.
Isn't that the guy
who kept on making threats
because it took someone two tries
to place his mother's IV?
That's him all right.
He said "thank you"?
I'm surprised he didn't yell.
Ah, well, the other day,
the professor may have gotten angry
when they heard him refer to me as "girl,"
so I'd assume that's why he changed.
It's just the tone of his voice,
otherwise he's been nice.
-I better go take a look.
-All right.
[Joon-mo] Why aren't you doing anything
about the patient who has a fever?
Oh. Oh, no, that's
I did a chest X-ray, which showed nothing
out of the ordinary.
She's only on POD one.
I've been observing.
Even with a completely normal X-ray,
if a fever crops up,
you should be able to take action!
Blood and urine cultures aren't done
until POD two to three,
so it would be too early to run those.
And a wound culture on POD four or five
is only warranted
if the fever's continued that long.
I'll be checking the wound during
the dressing change tomorrow to be sure.
Hey, you teaching me right now?
-No.
-Didn't I tell you?
Whenever I know something,
don't tell me about it like it's news.
I don't need a list of factoids
that I'm familiar with!
Sorry about that.
[Joon-mo] Regardless of POD,
if the patient has a fever,
don't you think you need to find out why?
How would you do that?
-Don't know?
-No, I know.
Hurry up and answer me!
You just told me I can't explain something
you already know.
Do you think this is all a joke?
[Joon-mo sighs]
Blood cultures, urine cultures,
or checking for wound complications.
I don't care, just resolve the issue.
Fever workup, get on it.
Go do that immediately.
-You understand?
-I understand, Professor.
If this was for Obstetrics,
you'd take the work seriously.
[sighs]
Ouch! Why'd he bring Obstetrics into this?
No idea.
Last time, he said I did too many tests
on POD one, but he's still angry at me.
I'm totally confused now.
It seems like he's totally
out to get you right now.
-You upset him, didn't you?
-Did I?
No, nothing happened.
Mm. Sa-bi, why don't I let you in
on my personal tactic.
Say a professor is upset, or unhappy.
What are you supposed to do?
At times like that, you just say,
"I apologize!"
Why apologize if I'm not at fault?
Just try it. Just act like it's
your fault, and say you're sorry.
-How, if I didn't make a mistake?
-That's not the
[sighs]
It's all right. Mm.
Just do what's best for you.
I gotta go to surgery.
So as for you,
stay out of trouble with everyone.
Gosh.
You know, I can't believe we're here.
I'm finally giving advice
like this. [chuckles]
[pleasant music playing]
[Jae-il] Can I ask?
Why are you doing surgery this way
instead of opening her up?
Oh, I'm not saying
there's anything wrong with it.
It's just this is a complicated surgery,
so I wondered why you did a laparoscopy
instead of a laparotomy.
I'm not challenging you.
It's a genuine question. It really is.
Wow, I'm so touched by your curiosity.
Honestly, I think
this is the first time ever
during a surgery that an R1
has asked me a question.
Whoa.
Everyone else just assumes.
They assume, because I'm the professor,
I must be right.
Nobody gets curious enough
to ask otherwise,
especially during the surgery itself. Hmm!
According to all the current research,
there's no difference in outcome
between a laparoscopy and a laparotomy.
But today, we're considering
the case of this particular patient
who is further along in her years.
So, for the patient's benefit,
my aim was to reduce surgery time,
as much as I possibly could.
So then, have I answered
your question, uh
uh, Dr. Yoon Tae-jin?
Um Jae-il, actually.
[Jae-hui] Oh, yes, yes.
That's right, Um Jae-il.
Yes, I know. Of course!
I know, he's, you know, the, uh
the [spluttering] Hi-Man.
HI-BOYZ.
-[laughs]
-[Jae-hui] Sorry.
Sorry. Boy.
[chuckles]
Specimen coming out now. [grunts]
Goodness.
Just look at this thing.
Why does a terrible thing like this
have to form in the first place?
It's so unfortunate.
Creates such anguish and pain. Goodness.
Anyway
-HI-BOYZ.
-[Eun-mi laughs]
[chuckles]
You're really not going?
Professor Kong getting us pizza
is actually a very rare event.
And it's from someplace
really good, I heard.
No, thanks.
I don't like pizza, so you go ahead.
You told me you like pizza, so
Ah. [chuckles nervously]
I do like pizza. Just not today.
Indigestion.
-Oh, I can get you
-No, don't do that!
Don't worry about it.
I don't want medication.
-You guys go ahead.
-We'll be really quick!
-No need to.
-Why not?
There's no rush, have fun.
Go and eat a lot, and chew thoroughly,
or you could get indigestion.
-I see. Okay, we'll get some pizza.
-See you later.
Ooh, I'm so excited!
You could've had pizza first, you know?
I'd rather have this.
[chopsticks clatter]
["Forever" by D.O. playing]
Well, Dr. Oh,
I feel confused. Do you wanna keep this
under wraps or shout it from the rooftop?
I don't know yet.
But I really want to be with you.
I know that much.
[chuckles]
-Me too.
-[chuckles]
[Do-won clears throat]
[laughs]
Think you can help out a little?
[chuckles]
-Pork too.
-Pork?
Mm-hmm.
-And spinach.
-Oh, and spinach?
[sighs]
I'm so tired right now,
I can't even lift the spoon.
[chuckles] Well, I can handle that.
No, Dr. Oh, it's all right.
-Hey, I'm strong.
-You really don't have to do that.
Ah.
[mimics airplane whirring]
Ah.
Oh, hey! If you drop my chopsticks,
you should at least pick them
Oh, Myeong Eun-won. Hi, Doctor.
-Mm? Oh, Dr. Oh.
-Yes?
The surgery ahead of us is running long,
so hold the patient half an hour.
All right.
[cell phone ringing]
Hello, Professor.
Professor Kong wrote me
a letter of recommendation already.
The application deadline
for professorships is next week.
I'm going to touch mine up
before submission.
Yes.
I appreciate you.
Oh. hey, Dr. Ku.
Have you heard about how many people
have applied for professorships this year?
I haven't.
Ah, Dr. Yoo Jeong-hye is applying.
I heard about that.
Ah [clicks tongue] she is?
Are you going to eat that? Can I
Mm.
-I had better go.
-[chuckles]
-[Eun-won] Enjoy lunch.
-Bye.
[sighs]
That was close.
How can a hospital as large as this
not have any privacy?
How can we date at work?
Dates aren't supposed to go on at work.
All the free time is spent at work.
How else are we supposed to date?
And at home, there's always
two pairs of eyes watching.
Yeah, you're right. And I gotta put in
time here over the weekend.
Really?
Let's meet up tonight, by the fire escape.
-Those stairs should be empty
-Mm-mm. Someone grabbed up every floor.
Does anyone here actually work?
-There's the elevator.
-[chuckles]
That's only on TV. How would that work?
I want to see you.
Uh, I'll have about half an hour
after 9:00.
We can go get a coffee together, okay?
-It'll be just us.
-You got a deal.
-We'll go to the
-[cell phone ringing]
PYO NAM-KYUNG
Ugh, this is the absolute worse timing.
What?
[Nam-kyung] Your cervical length is fine,
and everything's looking really good.
You can go back to the ward. I'm all done.
Thanks so much, I'm glad.
I need to start outpatient ultrasounds.
Please hurry.
-Just one more? It'll be my last!
-You can't. Patients are waiting.
-But I'm fast!
-You can't.
Your patient's upstairs,
so bring the portable machine to her.
Why clog things here?
Kong told me it's best
I use the machine in here.
That seems like a you issue.
Oh, sorry about that.
Let's go.
The outpatient appointments
are behind now.
Look, I really do understand all that,
I get it.
I'm doing all the Doppler scans here
'cause Ggong is making really important
decisions and told me to use this machine.
Ah. Be there in a sec.
Please return to your seat, miss,
and I can help you in a minute or two.
Sure.
Well, outpatient appointments stop
at lunch.
Yeah, but it got sprung on me after lunch!
[sighs] Can't you help me out
just this once?
I'll be super quick, I promise.
Seriously?
-Fine, be quick.
-[cell phone ringing]
Yes, Professor?
[Jung-min] Where's Miss Moon's ultrasound?
Why isn't she ready for her consultation?
Sorry about that.
Things are backed up down here.
Just give me a minute,
I'll get everything done.
[Jung-min] The ultrasounds have been
holding up my appointments all morning.
-Do I need to come there myself?
-No don't come, I'm on it!
Give me just a minute!
[cell phone ringing]
Yes, Professor?
Uh, I completed the ultrasounds.
Well, except there's
just this one patient I couldn't
Of course. I'm on it.
Yes.
Yeah, just a minute, I'll get it done.
[sighs]
Hey, Oh Yi-young, let me finish!
Hello.
-Hello, Doctor.
-Hello, ma'am.
-Hello.
-Hello, Professor.
Hello.
-Hello.
-Oops, here!
[sighs] If they could just be
more responsible and plan,
there'd be no need to run around.
Sorry we were running late.
Let me take a look at this.
Oh, oh! Whoa! Hey, stop!
What are you doing?
[yelps] That's hot!
[wincing]
[panting]
[sighs]
Jeon Mi-yeon's surgery
is first thing in the morning.
An ostomy for intestinal obstruction.
Aren't you aware of that?
I'm aware.
Then why was there porridge on her table
when I ordered a fast for her?
Were you trying to sabotage the surgery,
or what?
That's not
And the Surgeon-in-Chief of the department
is doing the surgery since I requested it.
If it's cancelled because of it,
can you imagine how stupid I'd look then?
Uh
It's co-managed
with the surgery team, so
[Joon-mo] What happened?
Well, what about it? Go on.
Apparently, their resident
was the one who entered
[Joon-mo] They did what?
Just say something already!
I'm sorry.
Tell me, do you come here
to help patients,
or are you trying to kill old ladies?
Thank God I was there,
or it would've been a disaster!
Oh, Professor Jo! There you are, gosh.
Oh, Professor.
Why aren't you answering your phone?
Oh. Oh!
Oh, I'm so sorry, I just
I was dealing with my resident.
May I assist with anything?
I'm afraid so. [sighs] One of
our residents entered an order wrong.
He ordered a meal for Miss Jeon Mi-yeon.
He confused her with someone else,
I guess.
Ah-ha, you're saying that
he cleared her to eat?
I see. That would explain
the porridge being sent to her.
That's right. Well, has she
already eaten the porridge?
-No, she didn't eat it.
-Ah, thank goodness.
You don't need to worry.
I double-check everything just in case.
What a relief this is.
Now apologize to the doctor.
I really am sorry.
-I'm sorry about that.
-It's all right.
Try not to worry now, okay?
These things do happen, right?
-[Professor] Be careful going forward.
-[resident] I will.
And Professor, since you're here,
how does tea sound?
That sounds great. Tea it is.
-[Joon-mo] Great!
-Get back to work.
[Joon-mo chuckles]
Oh, gosh. How are you?
[sighs]
I'm a little confused.
Why didn't you say it wasn't you?
I was just too scared.
He made the mistake, not you.
You didn't do anything wrong.
Hold your head up high.
Right.
[Jae-hui] Stay strong.
Don't let it [sighs]
Ah, never mind words right now. [inhales]
There are better ways
to make you feel better.
Oh, don't, I'm all right. I appreciate it.
I can enter that medication order
for you. Go on.
-Go get a cup of coffee, okay?
-No, I'm fine.
No, I insist. To be honest,
it's because I'm really thirsty.
Please get up and go.
Let's go, get up, come on, just go.
Go on. Good, now get going.
Uh, for me, uh,
an iced americano sounds really good,
in, like, a big size cup.
Biggest there is. [giggles]
Let me see, now, huh?
Oh, just what do we have here?
[both sigh]
[Nam-kyung sighs]
Anybody want food?
[comical music playing]
Do you?
What? Is it your coffee?
It tastes bad, or what?
It's great.
-Pork stir-fry down in the cafeteria.
-Really? Let's go.
Hey, Um Jae-il, isn't today
supposed to be street food day?
-Just ask her about that.
-Who do I ask?
-Jae-il, I had street food earlier.
-And I had stir-fry before, so
So for dinner
-Stir-fry.
-Street food.
You two work this out.
I don't want to get involved.
-Did you have a fight?
-[both] No way.
They so did.
-Not true, why would we be fighting?
-Exactly. No reason we'd be fighting.
-She just got me in trouble.
-[scoffs] Only returned the favor.
Hey, Sa-bi, is it such a big crime
to do an ultrasound
with an inpatient who might be critical,
before the outpatient sessions?
Isn't it shocking someone's confused
about how the outpatient process works?
I was just asking
if anybody here might want dinner.
All right, then.
I suppose we'll starve now.
Are you happy, guys?
Hey! That's mine, don't!
Ryu Jae-hui bought me this one!
I'm sorry!
Seriously! Guys, why do you
take things this far?
Being so angry over nothing? Seriously?
Ah, jeez. I can't stay here like this.
So, uh, don't try to stop me, guys!
I really can't stay here!
Ugh! Come on!
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
You're all set. We'll be sure to call
as soon as we get the results.
It'll take around an hour or so.
So, there's no more blood tests now,
am I right?
-This blood sample was the last one?
-I expect it's the last, yes.
So then, what comes next
in the whole process?
If the levels appear good, you'll make
an appointment for an ultrasound.
You mean the scan, right?
The womb scan thing that you guys do?
Yes.
And an hour from now means you'll be
calling around 1:30 or so?
I'll call you as soon as the results
come out, so don't worry.
Right. I'm grateful. Thanks.
Oh Yi-young. Don't delay
the outpatient ultrasounds tomorrow.
-We have a full schedule, okay?
-Yes.
That is, yes, I'm on it.
Backed-up ultrasounds
open the floodgates for complaints.
Pyo Nam-kyung, I have 25 outpatients
to be scanned tomorrow, right?
Uh, yeah.
I need to be done with everything
no later than 5:00.
-No delays for any reason, understand?
-I'll get them wrapped up by then.
I've heard a spot is opening
in the Obstetrics ward here soon.
[Gi-sun] Yes, I'm going to take it.
I was just about to say the same thing.
I'll take it, lock it down.
I have a patient in Gynecology
that needs to transfer.
Making rounds slow me down.
-I'm counting on you, Doctor, okay?
-I will.
I'm in the same situation.
I want my patient brought from Gynecology,
so please sort it out.
-But make sure you eat too.
-All right.
[line ringing]
Is this Administration? I'm OB/GYN
resident Pyo Nam-kyung, hi!
Yes, I was told a bed opened up
in the Obstetrics ward.
Hey!
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 25
[chiming over PA]
[indistinct announcement over PA]
Sorry, I had work to do.
Why are you acting so weird?
It doesn't suit you.
They called you yet?
No. [sighs]
-[exhales]
-Nervous?
Not at all.
If it was happening, it'd be confirmed
after the first test I did.
-Let's not count on it.
-[cell phone ringing]
Oh.
Hello? Yes, this is Oh Joo-young.
Ah.
[chuckles]
Uh-huh, I see.
Yup, thanks so much, then.
Uh-huh.
-The level's at what?
-Ninety-one.
It was 153 before this one.
It's much lower than it was.
A chemical pregnancy?
How did you know?
[chuckles] Wait, right.
You're a doctor.
-[sighs]
-How can you be laughing right now?
I just figured it wasn't going to work.
Must explain why I'm not
so torn up this time as much as I thought.
Hey, I said it's all right.
I didn't hear the heartbeat
and I didn't feel them move. Relax.
All I've lost is a bunch of cells.
I'll be fine. And anyway, I still have
two more of the embryos left.
It's all right. Two more tries. Mm.
Let's grab lunch. I've got some time.
You must be much too busy now.
Treat me to a coffee.
Since I started doing IVF again,
I haven't been able to have any coffee.
[inhales] So a caffeine hit
sounds really great.
-Let's go, then.
-Mm.
You?
[Yi-young] The usual.
An iced americano, and an iced latte
as well if you could. Thank you.
Oh, and the iced latte is decaf
Oh.
No, it's good.
That habit really did form quick.
[breath trembles]
Mm.
[tearfully] Ah, God.
I just can't believe I tried so hard,
and still got nothing back at all.
-[sobbing]
-["Breath" by MINNIE playing]
[sobbing]
Hey, hey, stop.
-[sobbing]
-[clears throat]
Sorry about that.
One iced americano, regular sized.
[clears throat]
And an iced cafe latte with an extra shot.
No, two extra shots.
-All right.
-[sniffles]
[sobbing]
[clears throat, sniffles]
[cell phone ringing]
PROF. JO JOON-MO
[cell phone ringing]
PROF. JO JOON-MO
[clears throat]
Hello, Professor.
Oh, Kim Sa-bi just went to the bathroom.
Let me check and I'll have her
call you back. All right.
It's nothing, really.
Availability check for the OR.
Oh.
Have you eaten?
Then come to the cafeteria. What?
Scared you'll meet him there?
-What are you doing here?
-What anyone else would be doing.
Withdrawing cash.
They'll be closing soon. Let's go.
[Sa-bi] Mm-hmm.
If you just want to be alone,
this place is pretty good.
But I know a better spot at night.
-Like where?
-It's a place where no one goes.
And it's nice and quiet.
-[laughing]
-[patient] Hey, don't laugh. Shush!
[laughing]
Excuse me, hello.
This patient's a friend of mine.
I'll handle it.
[resident] Oh, sure.
-Appreciate it.
-Of course, bye.
Just trying to get here
was extremely treacherous.
-So just help me, okay?
-Yeah, all right. I'll take care of it.
But just quit begging, we're friends.
I'm here for you no matter what.
-[laughing]
-I told you to stop laughing already.
This is driving me insane,
I swear! [groans]
-[sighs]
-[exhales]
How on earth did you manage
to do this to yourself?
I guess there was super glue on the desk,
and I leaned my elbow on the tube,
which caused it to drip down
from the edges of the desk.
-Right.
-So then,
I tried to catch all the drips,
and this is the end result.
You're out of work
if you screw up your hands.
Just an unemployed loser.
Yeah, I know all that, Jung-min.
That's why I'm begging you.
Amen, namaste, sawadee ka, I need you.
-[cell phone chimes]
-Mm?
Oh, on my side here.
[Jung-min] Ugh, God.
[laughing]
-I can't get it, help me. Hold it.
-[laughs]
-[clicks]
-Face recognition worked.
[grunts]
Oh, God!
Ugh, the things you [laughing]
God. [grunts] Typo, typo.
[panting]
[gasps] Yes, I did it! It's done!
-Jeez.
-Now slide it on in.
[chuckles]
[sighs]
Let's look. Hey, is an obstetrician
really the right person to do this?
Yes. Yeah.
Oh, my gosh, hold on.
There's a specialist for this.
-She's in the hospital now.
-Where? Derm, or what?
OR? Or it's not Psych?
-Not them, no.
-Can't you just help me out yourself?
You can take the lead surgeon role,
and I can be the best assistant.
How did you think to come to our hospital
instead of your own? You're a nuisance.
This place is closer to where I live.
Not that you were embarrassed
to get seen at your own?
-[cell phone chimes]
-Oh, she's here.
-The specialist.
-Who is it? Or have we met?
No one comes close to being her match.
She's a master physician.
[Professor] Lee Ik-jun?
[gasps]
Weren't we to meet at the campground?
What brings you here?
Your hands, what happened?
What have you done?
My hands got stuck.
-Super glue.
-Super glue? How'd you do that?
You know that one camping lantern
that you really like?
I noticed the handle fell off,
so I tried to fix it.
You Seriously? I told you to just
leave it alone, didn't I?
-[winces] Ow.
-I bet you're in pain.
-Yeah.
-What are we going to do with you now?
-Oh, goodness sake.
-Song-hwa, what are you doing here?
I had a paper to revise.
Didn't I tell you that?
Chi-hong was taking awhile with the data,
so thought I'd lend a hand.
How'd you know she was here?
Song-hwa told me she was on her way over,
so we grabbed lunch.
Then I was going to work, when I happened
to get a call about your situation.
[Ik-jun] Oh.
Jung-min, what do we do with this?
Warm saline is our first step,
before any big guns.
And then, depending on what happens,
OS can always
-cut them off.
-Hey! How could you?
You have my sincere sympathies.
-[Gi-sun] Hey, Ik-jun!
-Huh? Oh God, now what?
Ik-jun, you here?
Are you okay?
What happened to you, huh?
Seo Jung-min said you were in the ER.
I was so worried about you.
I just happened to get the call
when she was right there, so
Hi, Ggong.
[chuckles]
[chuckles] So how are you
these days, Junie?
Oh, good. Hmm.
Are you okay? What did you do to yourself?
You see, um
Hey, you. Can't you see that
someone else is here too?
-[gasps] Song-hwa!
-[laughing]
[Gi-sun] It's been so long, wow!
Well, how are you doing?
Oh. You've gotten even prettier now.
That's not true. [chuckles]
Right? Song-hwa gets prettier
by the day, it's amazing.
Gi-sun, it's been forever. You're still
the same as you were three years ago.
[chuckles]
Yes, she hasn't changed at all,
looks or skills.
[Ik-jun] Here, look.
Song-hwa, look at this. It hurts.
It's starting to really sting, you know?
-Does it sting a lot?
-Yeah! Your hair, just let me
[sighs] Just quit it!
You need to start focusing on yourself.
Look at the state you're in!
What do we do about this?
Hey, don't try to force your hands apart.
-I won't, but it does sting.
-What's going on?
What do you mean? Your first love
is happily here with his last love.
They've dated a while now.
Didn't you know?
[gasps] Oh, so that's why you
[Ik-jun] I'm trying
to get my hands unstuck!
-I already knew they were dating.
-[indistinct conversation]
You should get the lipstick
off your teeth.
-[Ik-jun] This isn't gonna work.
-[Song-hwa] It's not. Cham, Cham, Cham.
[sighs]
-Okay, Cham, Cham, Cham.
-[both laugh]
I won that round. I did.
-Ow. Hey.
-[laughing]
-Stop cheating! You can't hit me.
-How is that cheat Oh, no.
You see how I'm treated here? Gosh.
-Did I hurt you? You okay? Sorry.
-Why won't anyone get me unstuck?
[Joon-mo sighs]
Oh, God. Seriously?
If the surgery in the OR is running long
and it looks like it's gonna delay
my surgery,
why can't you take more initiative
and get another OR ready?
If you're incapable of booking an OR,
I don't understand why you're here
and why we pay you for it.
What is it?
You don't have any interest in these
surgeries since they're not Obstetrics?
Professor.
Or that you only care
if it's a rare obstetric case?
Hey, you didn't join OB/GYN, did you?
You must have only joined OB, huh?
Professor, enough!
Please stick to the issue.
The issue you were upset with
regarding the OR?
You're really piling it on.
You're not helping the situation.
I [scoffs]
-Sorry, but just who are you talking to
-Professor, enough!
You know I'm talking to you.
Let's not play games, please.
If someone has made an error,
they should be corrected.
However,
our line of work dictates common courtesy.
You should watch what you say.
Professor, the one who needs
some courtesy right now appears to be you.
[sniffles]
[sniffles]
You think I do this just for fun? Huh?
This is how you instruct
and guide residents, you buffoon.
What's with the name calling?
Who's the buffoon, huh?
Listen here!
How dare you scream at a resident
in public like that?
How dare you question her
as if she had malintent?
That's neither discipline nor guidance
as far as I'm concerned!
Now, I'm absolutely sure Dr. Kim fully
understands what her shortcomings are.
Isn't that right, Doctor?
[sniffling]
So, Professor, that's enough.
Of course.
Mm. I was about to say the same thing.
Anyway, there's no need for anger.
Let's keep things pleasant here, huh?
All right, then, I apologize.
Yes, I'm sorry.
Get back to work. Nothing more
to see here, all right? Yes? Good.
[sighs]
Dr. Kim, I'm sorry.
I couldn't hear.
Did you get an apology or not?
[inhales sharply]
Sorry, give me just a second, then.
[Sa-bi] Professor.
He did apologize.
I heard it. I did get an apology.
Thanks for your help.
Well, if you say so.
[sighs]
How could he speak to his senior
like that? In front of the kids, no less.
Ow! Hey, watch where you're
Uh, I do apologize.
But you're not hurt, are you?
I work here as one of the professors.
Yeah, and?
There are sick people here, Professor.
You should be careful.
Yes.
And I apologize. [clears throat]
Oh, I didn't swear at all, not once.
Okay. [laughing]
I don't raise my voice
at anyone anymore actually,
and I speak to people very courteously.
Oh, I'm really glad!
That's so good to hear.
Hey, it's wonderful to see you
with such a big smile on your face.
And when you smile, I can see you're
just a teddy bear kind of guy.
-You think?
-[both laugh]
-Oh, sorry, were you in a hurry?
-Just making rounds.
Your mom's recovery is going really well.
Her labs are looking good too.
-You really helped.
-Oh, no, it wasn't me!
Your smile is actually
the real source of her recovery.
Always a pleasure. [chuckles]
I really hope that you'll go on smiling.
-Okay?
-I will.
-Well, goodbye.
-Good, see you.
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
[yawns]
OB-GYN, OH JOO-YOUNG
[Do-won] Pyo Nam-kyung.
[slurps] Yes?
And Oh Yi-young.
Are you guys in some competition
to be the worst?
Neither of you has kept up
with the charting.
And Oh Yi-young,
you haven't done the birth certificates
or delivery records,
or any patients' discharge work.
Get that done.
Pyo Nam-kyung, you haven't written
admission notes for surgeries next week.
You need to know all of their details.
Understand?
I understand. I'm really sorry.
I'm going into surgery now,
so get those tasks done
and show me before you leave tonight.
Understood?
And I'll check every last detail,
so don't cut corners.
[both] Will do.
[sighs]
[telephone ringing]
Hello?
Sorry? Oh, yes, yes,
I'll go tell the professor immediately.
All right.
Hello, ma'am?
Ma'am, can you hear me? Ma'am?
-[EMT] Her hemoglobin count is 6.6.
-And her BP is falling.
-Pump more blood.
-Got it.
Wake up. Open your eyes for me?
Can you tell me your name? Hello, ma'am?
[man] Yulje EMS,
Hotel-Lima-nine-six-nine-seven,
six mile final, Yulje helipad.
CENTRAL EMC AIR AMBULANCE
We're here, ma'am.
-We're gonna move you.
-Lift the stretcher. One, two, three.
One, two, three.
She had a precipitous labor
and gave birth two hours ago.
PPH developed, a balloon tamponade
was placed, but bleeding isn't slowing.
Her BP dropped to 70/40 earlier.
It's 90/60 by our last measure.
She's had a unit of O-negative, and
a history of DDLT dating back seven years.
[gasps] Oh, ma'am, hey!
Try to open your eyes for me.
Ma'am, come on!
Head to the ER to get IV on the patient.
Then she'll be transferred into the OR.
Let's get her on a monitor
and assess her vitals right away.
-And grab the ultrasound for us.
-Will do.
[breathing heavily]
-Place a central line, now.
-Yes.
[gasping]
[Yi-young] Pyo Nam-kyung.
Pyo Nam-kyung.
Hey, Pyo Nam-kyung!
-Yi-young. [pants]
-Right, we need to do something fast.
Uh, I don't think I can. No, I can't.
-But we can't just stand here!
-[pants]
She's bleeding out.
-Hey!
-Huh?
-She's bleeding out.
-Yeah.
Bleeding means As soon as we notice it,
the next step is to quickly
-Just place the line.
-All right.
I started the Emergency Protocol.
TIME-SENSITIVE PROTOCOL FOR MANAGING PPH
Oh, nurse! Place a Foley catheter.
And next up is, uh
The oxytocin infusion, mix that now,
and carbetocin, do an IV push.
-Okay.
-[doctor] Are the labs being sent?
[nurse] They are right now, yes.
Doctor, the rapid infusion system,
can you start it?
Yeah.
-Open the IV all the way.
-[nurse] Doing it now.
-It's open.
-Pyo Nam-kyung.
[panting]
Hey, get it together!
Can't you tell I'm scared too?
Huh? Oh, yeah.
[pants] Balloon comes out first, okay?
All right.
-OR, please
-Oh, right.
This is Obstetrics, yeah.
Is there a prepped OR ready?
Please, it's an emergency,
hurry up! [panting]
-Oh, nurse.
-Yes?
I've contacted the blood bank. Meantime,
send two units of Universal O to the OR.
-We'll need more there. Be quick!
-Okay.
-Doctor, can you place an A-line as well?
-All right.
EMERGENCY MEDICINE
-Doctor.
-Yes?
The patient's marked down
as having a DDLT.
-What?
-Oh, my God, right.
Transplant team has to check lab results
to clear the patient to go into surgery.
They're not here right now.
-Uh
-[doctor] May I? Let me see that.
I work at Yulje Main.
I do Hepatobiliary there.
If I could? Thanks.
How long ago
did she get her liver transplant?
Oh, seven years ago. Then two years ago,
she also gave birth.
Yeah, her levels look really good.
Use antibiotics like you normally would.
-It's time for surgery to proceed now.
-All right.
There a chance of adhesion,
so try to be careful of that.
-Okay, come on.
-Oh. Thanks so much.
-Yeah, thank you.
-Raising the side rails.
We're moving out now.
Please clear the way for us!
[suspenseful music plays]
Oh, ma'am! Try to stay with us!
-Stay awake, please!
-I just feel so tired.
Stay awake! Just keep your eyes open!
-No, don't! [panting]
-No! You had your second child today.
It's your baby's birthday, she's waiting
for you. You need to take care of her!
Yes. [groans softly]
-Anesthesia.
-[resident] Starting now.
-The patient's multiparous?
-[Yi-young] Yes.
She gave birth two and a half hours ago,
and the baby is doing okay.
-How much blood loss?
-About 2,000cc so far, Doctor.
When we checked with a speculum in the ER,
we noticed active bleeding.
How much blood has she received?
One unit already on the chopper,
and she's on her third unit in total.
Two units of universal O
were prepped in advance,
and the blood bank has prepared ten units
of RBCs and five of FFP as well.
-[Jung-min] When will they be ready?
-[Yi-young] They need 20 minutes.
And have the CBC and DIC lab results
come back yet?
Yes, the labs sent from the ER
show a CBC of 6.2
and a platelet count of 90,000.
AST and ALT are both normal,
but PT and APTT [panting]
they seem to be prolonged, Professor.
Oh, and all other DIC labs
are still in progress.
Good work. That's very well done.
-Pyo Nam-kyung, you go scrub up first.
-[tearful whimpering]
-I can't do it.
-[sighs] Then you, Yi-young.
[panting]
You two are assisting. Get it together!
-The patient is
-You guys can leave.
-Wait, your surgery-
-It's all done.
Professor, the patient, she's really
Yes, I'm aware.
I'm looking at her right now.
Hey, we have no assistants here.
[Gi-sun] Yeah, seems to be the case.
I guess you're the only one
we can rely on now.
-[machine beeping]
-The BP is dropping. It's 70/40 now.
I'll keep up with the fluid volume.
Don't worry, start the surgery.
All right, then, guess we should begin.
[panting]
ANESTHESIA TIME, SURGERY TIME
Kelly scissors.
-I need another pair.
-[Jung-min] Here.
Metzenbaum.
And prep a one-zero tie.
Tie.
Cut.
-Administer the tranexamic acid, please.
-[Dong-ho] I'm on it.
Tonsil.
Right angle.
-Hold suction.
-[Yi-young] Yes.
[Nam-kyung] All right.
[hissing]
[panting]
[sighs]
I was worried the adhesion would be bad
due to the liver transplant,
-but the surgery's gone smoothly.
-Yes, it has.
What a relief.
So, what do you think?
There's no bleeding.
What else?
The patient
has been saved.
And now,
she can meet her baby.
[Jung-min] Not that sort of stuff!
She's lost 4,000cc of blood, but her
vitals are still holding stable right now.
Yes.
Her vitals are all normal, Doctor.
If you ask me, the surgery went very well.
[chuckles]
-[sighs]
-[Jung-min chuckles]
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
-Hey.
-What?
Go write the surgical record.
Why would I do that
when we have residents?
You really think they'll recall anything?
Thanks to us,
they came down off the cliff.
You're supposed to write it 'cause
you stepped in first to lead the surgery.
It's the assistant that writes it!
You came in to assist, right?
I was in too much shock
to really pay any attention okay?
Hey, you've been doing this too long
to get shocked.
-You always deal with hemorrhages.
-You're one to talk.
Hey, I saw your hands tremble earlier
and I thought,
"Ah, so this is what it means
to shake like a leaf."
If I were shaking,
I wouldn't have done a perfect surgery.
-Perfect according to who?
-[door opens]
-[door closes]
-[Jae-hui] Ladies.
Let's be pleasant, huh? Hmm?
Try something like this,
"You were so good in there."
"Oh, good job." "Wow, great work."
But, no, instead you're just at
each other's throats for 20 years now.
Goodness. This is all too sad.
I can't take it with you two!
-Gosh!
-[door closes]
-[sighs]
-[groans] Gosh.
-Great work, thanks. There, how's that?
-[scoffs] Whatever.
Ugh, I'm so sick of this.
[groans]
Gosh, those two.
[Sa-bi] Professor.
-Oh, dear, the surgery's finished.
-Sorry?
The Obstetrics emergency surgery.
-Oh, apparently, it went well.
-Ah.
Where are you going? Aren't you done?
I was going to assist your surgery.
It's a laparoscopy. Someone
has to hold the uterine manipulator.
Uh, I was going to head into surgery first
to put it in place
because the fellow said
they were going to be late.
I thought I'd do it.
I've already let the other fellow know.
Oh! No, it's okay. You can go home.
You've had a long day, huh?
Actually It's all right, go.
It's fine, I can manage
perfectly well by myself.
Oh.
I'm really fine, don't worry about it.
I'm fine too, and I'd like
to observe your surgery.
Oh, you're serious? You mean it?
Then would you like to take an RSO?
I'd love that! Thanks so much!
Oh, you would? Well, in that case,
uh, how about
Yes, Professor,
the patient's stabilized now.
I told the Air Ambulance team everything's
all right and passed on our team's thanks.
Yes, 'course, I'll check up on her.
All right, then.
-[Yi-young] What did you put?
-The patient info here.
You guys done?
Can we have some more time, please?
It's not that we didn't try,
we just couldn't, because
-There was this
-Yeah, I know.
The patient asked me
to send on her thanks.
She said one of you kept her awake
on the way,
and one reminded her to go see her child.
And I bet that's you.
You guys did really well today.
I know it must've been completely
terrifying, and difficult, and chaotic.
Now since the two of you
did such great work today [smacks lips]
I'm gonna finish these.
Sorry?
-Unless you don't want me to.
-Oh, no! That's not the case.
Get outta here
or I'll change my mind. So go on.
In three
-Okay. [laughs]
-Thanks a lot, bye!
Thanks a bunch!
["Sunny Day" by An Yu-jin playing]
[chimes]
[Yi-young] I'll see you in two hours.
[Jae-il] Aren't you hungry?
You haven't eaten all day.
[Sa-bi] I can barely walk
because I'm so hungry.
Yeah? Want some of this?
Someone gave me these. Here.
There are only two of them.
The others'll probably be hungry too.
Should you and I just
eat it ourselves in secret?
That seems selfish. Shouldn't we wait?
These are too famous to wait for.
Because they sell out, you can't get any
without a big line.
Even so.
-You saw them both arguing?
-Mm-hmm.
They need alone time.
They're ashamed to be seen apologizing.
Oh.
We need to give them privacy.
It's really all for their own good.
Is it?
Then we better
just go, huh?
So where should we eat?
Ah! The place I told you about!
Ah, that one?
Mm-hmm. It's gonna be empty now. Let's go.
[exhales] It's been so long,
I think I might've
-Maybe this isn't the right way.
-It's the right way.
If we go there, take a left, and then
just keep going, there are escalators,
and once we take those down,
we'll be in the lobby.
Song-hwa, your brain's amazing.
You know so much.
-There's a sign right there.
-Oh! [chuckles]
-Guess I missed that.
-[chuckles]
I was so captivated by you,
that explains it. [chuckles]
-Hey, you know
-Mm?
Being here at night, the outpatient clinic
seems a little scary.
-It's completely deserted.
-No, it isn't.
There's someone here.
Who else is here?
Stop messing with me. Nobody's here,
right? Seriously, stop with that!
It isn't anything scary.
I think there could be
bugs scampering around here.
Do you mean that? But this is a hospital.
Come on, there are no bugs.
I don't mean real bugs, come on.
I'm talking about couples
on secret dates.
Hmm.
With nowhere to go
and barely any time off,
they still have to go on dates.
So they come along searching
for the rare, empty places
the hospitals always have.
So what? Just where do they all go?
Emergency stairs? On-call area?
God, no! That's only if they want
to be found out.
Somewhere [gasps]
Wait, here?
[snaps fingers]
Exactly, yeah.
Appointments are done,
no patients, staff's gone home.
Oh.
They come here by night
to go on their little secret dates.
Still, professors could forget
something, and return to get it.
[gasps] Oh, my God.
-They swing the door open, hit the lights.
-Yeah?
Then something scuttles away,
as they disappear like bugs do.
So where do they hide?
They back up against the wall
or hide behind a door,
or they might even crawl under the desk
so they don't get caught.
[laughing]
Okay, but how
do you know all those details?
Must've had dates way back then.
-Well, it wasn't
-[squirts]
Hey, it was all Jun-wan, all right?
When he was a resident here. He'd do it
all the time, that's how I know.
I see.
-[chuckles]
-[inhales]
Think there are bugs here now?
Wait. Hey, what are you doing? Don't!
This isn't even our hospital. Quit it.
Hear anything?
[Ik-jun] I think I hear something. [blows]
-What's this? [knocks]
-[laughing]
-[Ik-jun] I thought I heard a knock.
-You're not hearing anything.
-There's nobody.
-Song-hwa, was it you knocking?
-Oh, you scared me!
-[chuckles]
Hey, let's go. I'll spare them for now.
Actually, I assume that kids these days
don't bother coming here.
I see them holding hands out in the open,
getting coffee and things.
That's barely scratching the surface,
don't you see?
Song-hwa, there are 520 kids
out on secret dates,
all in places just like this,
right this second.
-[chuckles]
-Here, see?
Stop it. What if there really is
someone there?
Look at that, you see it now?
Guess those days are all long over.
These MZers aren't like that
and you know it.
No, I think you're wrong.
I was busting plenty just last year.
I know they still use it.
Huh. I guess the bugs
really did disappear after all.
[chuckles] Wanna get something for dinner?
The guys want us to join them.
We're celebrating your discharge.
-They want ramyeon.
-Let's get gimbap on the way.
Wait, you told them?
Look, I really didn't mean
to tell anyone, okay?
They kept asking where we were,
and things sort of came out
[groans] If they know, the entire hospital
knows what an idiot I am.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Should've gone to our hospital
if everybody was gonna know.
I drove to Jongno, and now everybody knows
about it anyway.
-[groans]
-[laughs] I know.
Hey, are you really okay now, or not?
Nothing is okay, not at all!
I was praying for hours
with my hands stuck together,
and they nearly combusted. Feel this!
[laughs] Hey, that really was
such a lucky miss you had today.
Could you please be more careful?
[Ik-jun] I'm never going to hear the end
of this from those guys, am I?
[laughing]
Is this door supposed to be open?
What do you think?
-Should we close it behind us?
-[chuckles]
It's all right, they're gone.
Oh, God, those guys scared me.
Why did we hide in the first place?
Huh?
Why tell me to hide?
It's not like we aren't allowed in here.
Did I tell you to hide?
Yeah. You pushed me
under the desk without warning.
You sat next to me and went, "Shh!"
Just like that.
Oh. Did I?
Why did I do that?
Well, it's 'cause I was worried, uh
Oh, I thought we'd get scolded
for not working.
-We're done with work.
-That's right.
Wow, even in that moment,
you remembered every detail of what I did
just to criticize it.
Is it 'cause you're smart?
[door unlocks]
Hang on. Forgot my coat.
[Yi-young] Here.
-Streusel buns sound good to you?
-Yeah.
[Do-won] I'm so hungry.
-Are you?
-Aren't you?
-Yeah.
-Oh!
-[gasps]
-Oh, man, I got you. [laughing]
[chuckles]
Oh.
["START!"

RESIDENT PLAYBOOK
[Nam-kyung] The two of them? Where?
-What the heck?
-[laughing]
-You're so cute.
-[Nam-kyung] Oh? Is it Dr. Ku?
This is insane! Come on! Trust me!
[Jae-il] Doctor, no need to worry. I pride
myself on loyalty above everything else.
I'm Yi-young's friend, Pyo Nam-kyung.
-Yi-young's
-[Yi-young] Stop it.
-[woman] All right, here we go again.
-Seong-chan.
You broke down in tears yesterday saying
he's your father, and today he's your son?
You shouldn't be touching this, sir!
Oh Yi-young!
I would like you to only focus
on your labor.
-What?
-[Eun-mi] No, she can't go.
The umbilical cord fell out!
Why don't you come here yourself?
What're you staring at?
Professor, I hope you recall
the request I made earlier?
If it's what the patient wants,
I have no choice.
-Move to the lead surgeon's spot.
-What?
[Jung-min] Will our department's legend
work on Oh Yi-young too?
[Yi-young] Where's Um Jae-il?
[Nam-kyung] Why would you go there?
Not like you're lovers.
Did Jae-il tell you that he likes you?
Are you guys dating?
Does he actually want us to date?
[song fades out]
