FINAL EPISODE
Ah, we ordered drinks, like, an hour ago.
Why aren't they coming, I wonder?
Oh, yeah! Hey!
PUB BY THE HOSPITAL
I, uh I got these drinks
for you guys today.
-They looked tasty.
-Wow, this isn't like you at all.
Gotta be true.
Let's do a toast with these,
then we can talk.
Okay? Cheers, cheers. Here we go!
[exhales] Okay, so, go on!
Is it true?
You two are
Um, here's the thing
Okay, here are your beers, guys.
-Appreciate it.
-Thanks.
His timing's too good. [clears throat]
[glass thuds]
I live with Ku Du-won.
He's my brother-in-law.
-We're together. All right?
-[gasps]
-Whoa.
-[Sa-bi] So it's true.
-You called it.
-That's enough.
I saw them, I told you!
Hey, Yi-young, I kept your secret!
Hey, when did you start going out?
Who approached who first?
Do your folks know? God, you're
double in-laws! Are you double in-laws?
-Okay!
-[gasps]
Listen, the two of us are happy,
and I appreciate your support, I do.
Please just, um
Please keep it quiet at work.
Okay, we'll keep it quiet.
Rumors at the hospital
would put a damper on things.
I don't know who I'd tell.
You know, Yi-young,
I'm a little pissed, okay?
You could've spilled it earlier.
It's just that
Sorry, guys.
It's fine. Don't worry, we forgive you.
And 'cause you owe us,
you're getting the check! [smacks lips]
-Okay!
-Yes!
Yay! Hey, let's order the pollock.
I heard it's good.
-Ooh, the mitre squid is amazing too.
-Oh, I ordered squid already.
Hey, sir! Can we order some whelks,
dried pollock
Nachos and fries!
Nachos and sweet potato fries, thank you!
[keyboard clacking]
Excuse me, Doctor.
Miss Lee Sang-rim in the MFICU
I decided to prescribe the tocolytic.
Hook it up when the other's finished.
Right, regarding Miss Kim Go-yun,
I just checked the meds she's on
and told her to finish those off for now.
Gosh, your fingers have
a mind of their own.
[chuckles] Yeah, I know.
I used to be so slow, but now,
I can't believe it ever took that long.
Oh! Are you going out later?
[chuckles] Well,
I have a date later tonight.
You're so lucky! I'm so jealous of you.
Taking a hiatus from dating?
More like pushed
into retirement prematurely.
I mean, how do I get to know someone
if I'm always working?
[sighs] Is this why everyone dates
their coworkers?
Date their coworkers? [chuckles]
Who is it? Who's together?
Uh [sighs]
I, um, don't think I'm allowed to say.
Do we have a new couple besides Dr. Oh?
What? How did you know?
Oh
I, uh
Didn't I say, "Please don't tell anyone"?
-[chuckles nervously]
-[chuckles awkwardly]
Hmm.
-And, so
-Oh, there's more?
For Yoon Hui-ok, I had a consultation with
GS and confirmed a date for the operation.
How did you know to do that?
Did I explain that to you?
Oh, her chart made it clear she requested
a chemo port ahead of her surgery,
so I made the arrangements.
Wow.
Wow.
And, oh, Na Seo-hyeon was scheduled
for a BSO to preserve her ovaries.
But we changed it to a bilateral
ovarian cystectomy today.
-Just making sure to remind you.
-Well, thank you for the reminder.
-Sure.
-Oh, hey, professor.
Hello, Dr. Ku. Shouldn't you be studying?
Have you even started?
Ah, wait,
you already know all the material!
-Don't have to crack a book?
-Oh, no!
I have plenty to study, I'm just busy.
I'm gonna have to start in January.
Obstetrics stole him from us.
They took this talented guy away.
[chuckles] Thanks, Professor.
So, well, I better get back to it.
-Have a good one.
-Yeah, you too.
Ah, shame to lose him.
Gosh, I really wish
I had a daughter for him.
That wouldn't do you any good.
He's already seeing a girl.
Oh, really?
Who is it? Who is she?
I'm not allowed to say.
Means it's someone here.
It's Yi-young. Oh Yi-young.
Mm, Oh Yi-young.
The one with with the bob.
-She's that one?
-Uh, no, she keeps it long.
Okay, but, she's tall, though?
Oh, no. No, I'm taller than her.
Oh, yeah?
Ah!
Oh, right, I know. She's the cool girl.
She's the intern who decided on Neurology.
Yes. Bingo, Professor.
Ah, no kidding. Who knew!
They're not quite, um I don't know.
So, for how long? Is it serious?
We have scheduling issues tomorrow.
Yeah, I thought about this.
We'll wrap up the first OP in OR-seven,
the TLH can move to the last opening,
and OP Room 10 for the explo lapa?
Oh. Not bad, could work.
[chuckles] When'd you figure all that out?
Wow, you doing extra work?
That's as rare as a major earthquake.
Come on, that's not out of the ordinary.
I got something
really out of the ordinary to tell you.
Dr. Ku has been seeing
[sighs] Oh, man, they still together?
-Huh?
-I didn't think it would last.
I guess Dr. Oh's been good for him.
-How do you Wait, how do you know?
-Everyone does, right?
It's pretty obvious.
I gotta get going. See you later.
Boy, so much for a secret relationship
if people know.
Everybody I run into knows.
You know too?
Your installment-based savings plan
matured a few days ago.
We'll transfer the funds soon,
so expect a deposit.
Most people can't stay the course,
but you did. Congratulations.
I appreciate that.
KU DO-WON
Thank so much.
So is there anything else
I can help you with?
Actually, I'd love to do a one year plan.
Ah, a short-term installment savings plan?
Yeah.
Truth is, I'll need the cash soon, so
[Nam-kyung] Wait, so, by soon
[Sa-bi] Do you mean
[Jae-il] For a wedding?
Yep. [chuckles]
[all exclaiming]
What the heck are you doing?
Why are you here?
Don't you guys have rounds? And charting?
[all] Boo!
Scram, you guys. Get out.
Yes, sir.
Your, um, new in-laws here
will see you around. Goodbye.
[scoffs]
Whoa! It's Yi-young.
[laughing]
-Whoo! Got you!
-Get outta here! Get to work. Move it.
-[Nam-kyung] Catch ya later, Romeo!
-Go away.
So childish. God.

RESIDENT PLAYBOOK
Have you all decided
on the new Obstetrics professor yet?
We narrowed it down to two options
based on your feedback.
However, our esteemed colleague, Dr. Seo,
would love to continue deliberating.
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
Thing is, both candidates' evaluations
in research and clinical competence
are stellar.
Unfortunately, there's some room
for improvement in other areas,
so before we choose,
I'd like to review this in more detail.
All right, take your time.
We'll make a decision by next week.
All right. Sounds good.
-Thank you, everybody.
-Have a good day.
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
-Rounds?
-Uh-huh.
[door closes]
NON-TENURE FACULTY APPLICATION
MYEONG EUN-WON
Man, time flies when you're having fun.
We only have one day left of this year.
It feels like we were just
introducing ourselves.
I know, right?
[groans] Not to mention
we're all gonna be 29.
I can't believe it. That's crazy.
I can't either. The way you spend,
I don't know how
you're not living in your car.
[blowing]
I got a present for myself, so what?
It's the holidays.
You got yourself a gift last month
as well. The pendant.
Oh, this? Black Friday sale.
It was so cheap, I had to go for it.
It was a steal.
-A steal.
-[sighs]
You're not gonna learn your lesson
till you're sitting on a mountain of debt.
Hey, enough with the nagging.
You sound like my mother, seriously.
-[scoffs]
-[Jae-il snoring]
Ugh, he's so loud.
Did he sleep here again?
Mm-hmm. The last few days,
he's been up every night.
-[snoring continues]
-Why?
Pretty sure there's
some cervical cancer patient in his ward
who's up all night with terrible pain.
The drugs aren't working on her.
So she calls him every other hour.
Why not sleep here and go when she calls?
Uh, guess he's more comfortable
staying close.
I don't think he wants her to be alone.
She's not alone, though.
I mean, her personal caregiver's there.
No, I meant she doesn't have relatives
or like, anyone
[sighs] Do I have to spell this out?
-[Jae-il moaning]
-He's way too good-natured.
And she's way too cruel.
[sighs] If only we could combine
you two, right?
Unfortunately, you're like oil and water.
-[Jae-il moans]
-[cell phone rings]
Uh-huh?
Yep, on my way, okay?
[whimpering softly]
-Hello. How are you?
-[whimpers]
Did you, uh, get some rest last night?
[exhales]
No, didn't sleep a wink last night,
I'm afraid.
It feels like my pelvis,
my gut and entire back
are all getting slowly ripped to shreds.
Pain control? You try anything?
Yes, morphine in an IV drip
and some Percocet.
She had some discomfort overnight too,
so I increased her meds.
Hmm.
There is a risk of blood clots
from extended rest, especially lying down.
So exercise would do you good, if you
[groans] I can't do that.
The pain is excruciating.
[breathing heavily]
I understand.
Well, I apologize.
Check on her as much as you can.
-Sure.
-Hmm.
[patient whimpering]
We'll take care of you.
I'll hang out
at the nurses' station tonight.
Call me if you feel pain, okay?
I'll come right away.
[whimpers]
[yawning]
Have you even slept at all this month?
How are you holding up?
[sighs] Hanging in there.
I have to keep visiting her. She needs it.
Can't do much else, though.
Now I understand
why all the patients ask for you.
You know, it's an honor
to have someone ask for you.
'Cause it means you're actually useful.
Look, barely a few months ago,
I was basically invisible.
No one cared or noticed.
Hmm, seriously?
Mm-hmm. Yeah, so trust me, okay?
Being useless to everybody is horrible.
Oh.
What's going on there?
-Hey, hello.
-[Ju-yeon] Hey, everyone.
[muffled sobbing]
[sobbing continues]
[sighs]
What's going on?
Eun-mi's first patient,
the one she saw through all that pain,
the first real person in her care
she just died.
Ah.
She was there from her admission
to the last round of chemo. It's just
the patient went downhill so quick,
it's hitting her hard.
We have to give her a little while to cry
before she goes into surgery.
-Call me if there's anything urgent.
-Yep.
[sighs]
[sighs]
Huh?
Not time for rounds yet, is it?
Ms. So! Hello there.
How are you feeling today?
Are you thinking about your surgery?
You look pretty worried.
I thought I'd be less afraid
'cause I've done this before.
Guess not.
I'm so scared I can't even sleep.
Oh, no. You should be getting
plenty of rest right now.
Doctor, I notice that you're alone.
You were alone last time as well.
Yes, that's right.
I was always really good
at flying solo, you know?
Because I'm a huge
Top Gun fan. [chuckling]
It's just,
I thought famous doctors went around
with an entourage of junior doctors.
Well, people say you never get to see them
'cause they're so busy.
But you're in our room constantly.
Are you not busy?
I thought you were a master physician,
that's why I came, but now
Right, first of all,
no physician's a master.
But, in every surgery and treatment,
I try to do my best, truly.
'Cause that's all I can do, you see?
I enjoy making my rounds.
Also I can't drag around
a bunch of aspiring doctors with me
when they have plenty to do.
It'd be a waste of manpower.
That kind of thing only happens
on television.
In real hospitals, well,
there aren't a plethora of junior doctors
for a personal entourage. Okay?
I was told you do the most operations
of any doctor in this hospital.
-Is that really true?
-[Sa-bi] Yes, it's true.
He does tons of surgeries.
He's extremely skilled.
No need to worry, trust me.
And he was on an episode of a TV show
about Korea's best doctors too.
We actually call him Jae's Anatomy.
Oh, really?
Hey, wait, hang on. Oh, don't uh
[chuckles] get too impressed.
Where did you come from, huh?
Go away, stop it okay?
I'm blushing now. Just stop it, you.
-Yeah, I'm done.
-That was it? Oh. Okay.
-Why're you here?
-Uh, right, I brought her test results.
Last time she was here,
her hemoglobin was in the nines,
but it's up to the 12s in pre-op.
That's great news.
With the adhesions in your pelvis,
the major risk is serious bleeding
in this sort of surgery.
With these results, though, I'm sure
we won't need to do a transfusion.
Won-ju, this is big!
Mm. That's great.
Most of what I hear is bad news.
So when I hear anything good,
I feel so relieved.
[Jae-hui] Hmm, listen,
this is a really positive sign,
but I want you to get plenty of sleep.
Then you'll go to surgery,
and we'll do our very best.
-That's great. Thank you.
-We appreciate it.
Thank you. Hmm.
Ah, just remember we all "Won-ju" to rest.
Or, um Forget it, see ya. [giggling]
Sir. Just letting you know
I got verbal confirmation from Radiology
and talked to Vascular
to give them a heads up.
Already?
I've requested blood for transfusion, and
will re-brief the patient on anesthesia.
I also checked on the ICU bed
one final time.
Hey.
You do know you're allowed
to breathe, right?
Yep. [breathes deeply]
What's wrong?
-You're worried, aren't you?
-Yes.
There's bad adhesion. It spans
her small intestine and her whole pelvis.
I don't know. I think the bleeding
could get severe.
Mm. I think so too.
And I know you'll be fine,
because you do this all the time,
I just still get
freaked out when there's
a prospect of blood like that.
I still get that way too.
Mm-hmm, you're not alone in this.
We're the freaked out duo.
But, here's the thing
She's super-resilient.
She got good test results.
Her work is done here. It's our turn.
So, everything else depends on us.
Not only that, we both know there's bound
to be plenty of blood as well.
I'm horrified too.
So, that is why I do these rounds.
And tell my stupid jokes too.
'Cause everyone deserves some hope.
Mm. I do what I can.
Oh.
Could I ask you for a favor?
I could use the motivation.
Can you repeat
your pep talk from earlier?
-Huh?
-What you said in front of the patient.
Oh, you do the most surgeries
and you're really skilled.
No, no one cares about that part, no.
You were on that TV show.
You're Jae's Anatomy?
[chuckling bashfully]
Oh, that's so good.
I'm not cool enough
to take the lead part in the crown jewel
of Shondaland.
Hey, that's so Mm-mm.
If the fans heard you say that,
they'd come after you with pitchforks.
-Back then, too?
-Yes, and
[Yi-young] Professor.
The patients I called about
are in the labor room.
Oh, let's go. Thank you.
-See you later.
-Of course.
-Hi, how are you?
-Hello.
This is Miss Nam's second birth.
The first was in 2015.
She's fingertip dilated. I admitted her
with contractions ten minutes apart.
Usually, the second time around,
things go a bit faster.
But it's been eight years
since your first,
and based on the way things are going,
it looks like you
might have to wait a little longer.
[chuckles] Okay.
Gosh, I don't know if it's 'cause
it's my second kid,
but I'm more freaked out this time.
Don't worry, we'll take care of you.
Second time's better.
-[woman] No way! Is it really that good?
-It's just
-My first child ended up being bigger
-[woman continues loudly]
No, for real.
Well, yeah, sure, but
Yeah, the baby could get here on the 31st.
Oh. You're telling me, um,
if it's in January, that means the child
is gonna be lucky forever?
Oh, if they're born at midnight
on the 1st, it's even better? Got it.
God, it's amazing how your fate
could change 'cause of one day, you know?
Wait, but I'm sure that's unlucky too.
Sorry, we're Give me a second.
-Two minutes. Sorry.
-Uh-huh.
She got pregnant via IVF.
It was pretty tough.
So a lucky baby is important.
Tomorrow's December 31st too.
Occasionally, you do see someone
who really,
really wants their child
to be born in the new year, so
Or born right at midnight on 1st January.
[gasps] Oh.
So that's why she's acting a fool.
Hey everyone, Jin-Hui here!
[chuckling] I have huge news.
They said my water just broke,
and now the due date is even sooner.
It could be tomorrow.
Who knows,
my little girl is on her way out.
Honestly, I think I just might
try to save her for New Year's eve!
Seriously, how amazing would it be
to have my baby
on January 1st at midnight?
Super good vibes for the new year.
So don't forget to hit that like.
Oh, I'm so sorry, we were just, uh,
just filming a little video. [laughs]
-So sorry.
-That's my bad!
-We're almost done.
-Sorry!
[all chuckle]
You're asking for too much.
The baby's health is all that matters.
Her Doljabi won't decide her destiny.
[chuckles]
Um, Min-hye,
listen, I really wanted
to go to the party,
but it's my mother-in-law's birthday
that day.
Why are you apologizing?
[scoffs] You don't need to be
on eggshells when we talk.
Yeah, my blood test is really soon.
Embryo transfer, yeah.
Everything's gonna be fine,
don't worry about me.
Hey, I'll be fine.
Right, oh, sure, we'll chat later. Uh-huh.
-Hey, Seung-won.
-Oh!
Oh, wait. Honey, that you?
What's going on?
-You're just out here by yourself?
-[laughs]
-Eavesdropping?
-Uh-uh.
Why'd you run off?
I was too cold.
-[chuckles]
-[scoffs]
[shivers]
Min-hye called.
Oh, isn't she, like,
one of your oldest friends?
She was at Yi-young's graduation,
did our wedding toast too.
She couldn't get pregnant last year,
so she opted for IVF.
-Oh?
-Well, uh, she ended up getting pregnant.
Oh.
-She's already turning one. Look.
-[gasps]
-So adorable, right?
-Oh, she's cute!
[chuckling]
So, you didn't wanna go to her party?
[Joo-young] Mm-mm.
I didn't want to go. [sighs]
So I just made up a story.
Good for you.
I don't know why,
but I'm so annoyed she invited me.
I wish she wouldn't tip-toe
around me either.
I get so angry when she calls
and says she's "checking in."
[crying] The thing
I hate the most right now is
my own jealousy.
I'm so disgusted with it,
you have no idea. [crying]
You're nervous about your blood test.
Don't be so hard on yourself, Joo-Young.
I hate what this is turning me into.
[crying]
I feel like I'm such a huge mess lately.
Come on, honey.
You're so strong.
-But I know how you feel.
-[sobbing]
Your hands are so cold! Oh, my!
Let's go in, huh? Oof! So cold! Brr! Hmm?
[both chuckle]
All right. Ooh, it's so cold.
Why're you packing if you don't know
when you're moving yet?
Gotta get a head-start
while I have spare time.
Second year is so busy,
you won't have time for this.
-We could go clean your room instead.
-I cleaned it last week.
Are you kidding?
I really cleaned it.
That's clean to you?
If second year's busier,
will I be able to see you?
I'll be doing more deliveries.
Yeah, true. Still, you won't have to do
all the crap you did in first year.
I heard we might not have R1s.
Oh. If that happens,
it'll be really tough.
Well, I can always quit medicine.
Don't.
C'mon, it was a bad joke.
Besides, I'll have to work
till I clear my debt.
You know, actually, I'm pretty close.
Only 19 million won left.
Whoa, almost there, huh?
[sighs]
Overdraft accounts, don't you hate them?
Oh!
Look, I'm gonna take care
of this one myself, I think.
This drawer's just a huge mess.
Mm. Okay.
TO MY DO-WON
FROM YOUR SONGSONG
"My handsome sweetheart,
studying so hard must be tough,
honey pie."
"But if it makes you feel better, I can
hardly focus 'cause I miss you so much!"
"Sometimes, I feel like I care more
about you than you do about me."
"And then, I get really sad!" [grunts]
[gulps]
[Seung-won] What are you doing?
-Were you guys just
-[both gasping]
-Were you in some kinda fist fight?
-[sighs]
Oh, Yi-young, lower your elbow.
If you hit him in the solar plexus,
he's dead. Goodness!
When are you going to start acting
your age?
God, you're sick, bro!
[sighs]
That's not true! Hang on!
It wasn't a fight, guys!
I was helping him with something!
[sighs]
[groans]
Oh, right.
Please, please, please.
YOU WERE UNSUCCESSFUL
Ugh!
I always lose.
Wait, how old is this one?
CONGRATULATIONS!
YOU'VE WON 32,984,892 WON
[cell phone thuds]
[gasps]
[gasps]
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
[Yi-young humming]
[woman] Can I get a hot americano, please?
[cashier] That'll be 1,500 won.
[humming]
-[cashier] It went through.
-[chuckles]
-[woman] Great.
-[cell phone ringing]
[cashier] They'll bring it out to you.
Thanks.
Hi. Oh Yi-young speaking.
[woman] Yes, hello,
I'm calling from your bank.
It's regarding the extension
of your overdraft account.
Oh, my overdraft
Yes, if you'd like to roll it over again
next year
I'd need to show proof of employment,
am I right?
Yes. If you choose not to roll it over
and repay the balance on the account,
you'd owe just under 20 million won.
I'll do that.
-Yeah, I'll just repay.
-All right then.
In that case, the account
will remain valid until January 21st.
All right. Thank so much.
[humming]
Dr. Oh?
Good morning, Doctor.
You've assembled the data for this month?
Could you please send it my way tonight?
Include the patient and children's data
for today's deliveries.
I could use some more time to
I have to do some MFICU
post-op ultrasounds.
Could you prepare that? Make it quick.
Though, coffee is crucial.
[chuckles]
No, I'm okay.
I'll be on my way. Gotta get to it.
Take my place in line, though
You go ahead. [chuckles]
What the
-[Moo-kang] We're working on it.
-What's gotten into her?
Right. I think we can get it to you soon.
On our end, things might be
a little tighter, unfortunately.
I don't think I've seen this before.
-Hey! Sun's out! Rise and shine!
-[gasps]
Already?
-You must not have slept again.
-Mm-hmm.
Yeah, it's that patient. Her pain is
getting worse, so she's miserable.
[yawning]
All those calls, God.
-[groaning]
-Uh-huh.
Are you sure
it's smart to dose her that often?
-Don't overdo it.
-I don't give her drugs at night.
I just get up to check on her.
No meds, huh?
Um, what are you checking?
Well, as her pain gets worse,
she gets lonely and down on herself.
So to comfort her, I mostly just hang out.
Oh.
Does that
Does that actually help dissipate
her pain, though?
Huh?
She's not calling you
because she wants to hang out.
The problem's the pain, right?
So heartless.
You told me cancer's
giving her pelvic pain,
but her whole body aches
because of metastasis.
You've had her on morphine
for three days, and the pain is worse.
Mm-hmm.
And you think I should go home
and not worry?
Wait, I'm not saying
Hmm?
I think I think you and me
are just polar opposites.
-Whoa, where you going?
-Surgery.
[door closes]
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
SURGERY STATUS
GOODBYE 2023
SENDING OFF THE LAST SUNSET WITH HOPE
ANESTHESIA TIME, CURRENT TIME
SURGERY TIME
-How are her vitals?
-Her BP is low.
EBL, 1,100.
We're giving her vasopressors
with the transfusions,
but her vitals aren't stabilizing.
The tumor's been removed,
and we've stopped most of the bleeding,
but her whole pelvic floor is oozing.
Let's move her.
We're transferring the patient to the ICU!
[nurse] Got it.
[Sa-bi] She'll keep bleeding,
is that okay?
[Jae-hui] Rolled gauze, please.
For now, we'll apply pressure
to stop the bleeding.
We won't find
the microvascular hemorrhages.
Her organs are too swollen right now.
If we keep delaying this, things are
just going to get worse for her.
All right, let's pack the inside.
Once we get some compression,
we'll open her back up to check,
then close.
CURRENT TIME, SURGERY TIME
[patient] Wait, stop,
it's only 4:20 right now!
Wait, hey, I can hold out a little bit.
Wait a second, please!
-[Jung-min] Push!
-[strains]
[gasping]
Midnight on the 1st,
psychic said that's ideal
if I want a future head of state.
-Ma'am, please.
-Couldn't we hold off for a few hours?
Please wait a bit longer.
[pants]
I'm sorry, but I just can't do this today.
I'm sorry, ma'am. The baby's the one
making this decision, not us.
Please push on the count of three.
One, two, three. [inhales]
[straining]
[exhales, pants]
[squelching]
Congratulations, the baby's out.
Hello there!
Excellent job, Miss Yong.
[baby crying]
Now, all we need to do
is safely remove the placenta.
How is she? Is she okay?
Yes, we'll give her to you shortly.
-Dr. Oh, time for the placenta.
-[Yi-young] Of course.
Oh, wait, me?
Oh, I'm not ready to
I've walked you through it.
Easy. Nice and easy
Um, ease up a little.
Move aside.
Didn't I tell you not to try
to pull it out all at once?
You completely severed the cord.
You were yanking on it way too hard.
I'm sorry, Doctor.
Mom is Yong Hui-seon,
Dad is Jeon Tae-san, correct?
[Hui-seon] Yeah.
I'm happy to say your little girl was born
at 4:28 p.m. on December 31st.
-[crying]
-I'm so sorry, sweetheart!
I'm so sorry.
I gave birth to you way too early.
[baby crying]
-[indistinct shouting]
-["We Wish You a Merry Christmas" playing]
[man] I said stop it, you bastard.
Oh, no.
It's the holiday season,
all right. [sighs]
Doctor.
Yes?
Uh, I was about to call you, actually.
What's going on?
-You better come with me and take a look.
-Okay.
She has cervical cancer,
although, general weakness
and dyspnea were her first complaints.
Uh-huh.
Lab results are odd and inconclusive.
-BP's always dropping.
-[blows out]
She's bedridden too, to top it off.
BP's what right now?
RADIATION CONTROL AREA
60/40, even though she's on pressors.
[sighs] Well, that's a lot of bad news,
isn't it?
She also made sure to put in a DNR.
She was pretty adamant.
Mm. All right, thank you.
I'm gonna take a look
Oh, what's her name?
[Gi-on] Yeom Mi-so.
Thirty-eight years old.
She was receiving follow-up care
after her last round of chemotherapy
here in October.
[machine hissing]
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
[sighs]
Have you checked on Miss Yong?
How are her contractions?
Good. I've been up to see her.
Healthy contractions, no hematomas at all.
Good. All right.
How about the fortune teller?
How'd that go?
Well, I called her psychic myself.
-We found a middle ground.
-Oh?
We decided being born on the 1st
is a sign of delayed luck,
so the baby couldn't be the president
until 80 years old.
A December 31st birth, just means she'll
be the youngest in a different role,
the Prime Minister.
You're bad with placentas,
but you're good with patients, I guess.
[chuckles]
Good work today. Go get some dinner.
Thanks.
Yes.
Uh-huh.
Right, nothing's open.
There are no rooms available,
so her family's supposed to check in
down here if they wanna see her.
Okay.
[sighs]
She likes quiet.
she likes solitude and stillness.
I'm sorry it's like this in here.
Oh, uh, do you know her?
Yeah, she was my first patient
when I started in Gynecology.
You know, I almost quit once.
She's the only reason I stayed.
Oh.
I should go finish her chart,
but I'll be back in a little bit.
Hello, Miss Yeom.
Your brother's on his way
to see you right now.
The supervising physician is coming too,
and I'm sorry,
but you aren't doing that great.
Uh, would you still like to keep
the DNR order in place?
Okay.
Uh, we're still continuing your Oxycodone.
Uh
Your mouth looks a bit dry.
Would you like me to get some wet gauze?
Uh
Then, um
Um, there's uh
nothing I can do right now.
[chuckles softly]
Uh
[sniffles]
You know,
I turned into a really good doctor.
I get lots of compliments.
["Nearer My God To Thee"
playing on cell phone]
That's all because of you.
INTENSIVE CARE UNI
RESTRICTED
[machine beeps]
Sabi-sabi, why are you here?
Oh, just doing charts
and watching the patient a little.
There's not much going on right now.
Go to the office.
We'll call you when we need you.
-No, I'm fine.
-You should grab something to eat.
I have to write a surgical note,
so I'll hold down the fort.
-It's okay.
-[machine chiming]
[nurse] Doctor,
her vitals are deteriorating.
Doctor, So Won-ju
is showing signs of active bleeding.
Pulse jumped way up to the one-tens,
and her BP is below 60 even with norepi.
We can't do much at this point.
Yeah, all right.
The patient who just came down from OR 10
needs a re-op right away.
Yeah. Okay, we're moving.
-Right.
-Got it.
[groaning, panting]
-Get the camera out of my face!
-[Yi-young] I think you better come now.
Please, Doctor, just one more hour.
Forget it, hurry up! Oh, it really hurts!
[panting]
-We're going to delivery.
-Hold on a minute!
-Can't it wait a little longer?
-Uh, no, I'm sorry.
I live-streamed it was coming
on New Year's.
Just wait another hour.
I can't waste this opportunity.
Listen, it's not a waste. It'll work out.
Trust me, I know all about this.
Really?
The child's ready to come out,
we have a room ready.
Which means this is all perfect timing.
-All right, let's go.
-Oh, please hurry!
-[panting]
-[man] Oh, honey.
Hello there!
[baby crying]
CURRENT TIME
Mom's name, Moon Jin-hui.
Dad's name, Song Ji-hwan.
Congratulations, your baby was born
at 11:02 on December 31st.
All right.
I'm sorry you didn't get to have
your New Year's baby,
but I hope your child brings you
as much joy-
[Jin-hui] Doctor, wait.
Everyone always says
that newborns are ugly
-[crying]
-[chuckles]
so why is she so beautiful?
You're right, she's gorgeous.
Dr. Oh,
it's your last chance this year.
You want to try?
-All right.
-Okay.
-No, sorry, you know what, I misheard you.
-Here you go.
[gentle music plays]
Now put your left hand there and
[Yi-young] And remove the placenta
without breaking the cord.
All right, the placenta is out.
-Time to start the oxytocin, please.
-[nurse] Got it.
Good, that's it.
DELIVERY ROOM
Not quite New Year's.
-She must be a little down.
-Not at all.
She came around. She gets to ring in
the New Year with her child.
She's busy filming with her husband
as we speak.
-Ah.
-Professor, you got what you wished for.
You mentioned you wanted an R1 to finish
up a birth before the year was over.
Oh, that's true.
Thank you both. It was a real pleasure.
And happy new year!
You were so terrible before.
What happened?
What? Oh, I was so
embarrassed that I always seem to
keep messing up.
And just the thought that a
a patient could suffer because of me,
freaked me out.
So I took a look at some videos.
And
I watched the videos over and over,
and I also practiced in the air,
sort of like like this.
[chuckles] Why do you look so scared?
I was complimenting you.
Okay. [chuckles]
Look at you go.
You did so well in there, I mean,
you looked a lot like me when I was an R1.
Oh, really?
Hey, that's a huge accolade, you know?
Ah.
[chuckles] Well, I'm flattered.
[chuckles]
Okay, Yi-young,
there's somewhere I have to go.
-Want to come?
-Where to?
You'll love it.
["Born" by Choi Jung-in playing]
[Jae-il groans]
Nodding off at the desk again?
[gasps] Oh.
That's all you've managed to learn
this year. How to sleep anywhere, huh?
No, I'm sorry.
An employee that's on call
should be working, not conked out.
No, uh, he's not on call tonight.
Why're you up, then?
Well, uh, Hong Sa-ra's been in
a lot of pain, Doctor.
-Yeah, so?
-Uh
It's just that, um, I've been trying
to stay with her and talk with her.
And see if there's anything else
I can do for her.
[phone beeps]
It's Miss Hong. How about that?
She must be in pain.
What? Oh!
It's me. Hello, again.
Hi there. Miss Hong, what do you need?
Oh, I'm sorry, it's not that.
It's so weird.
The pain is totally gone now.
Until today, I couldn't sleep 'cause
when I'd brush up against the bedframe,
I would be in pain.
But tonight, I slept four hours,
and it was so much better.
Are there any signs of recovery there?
Uh
The lab results are the same as they were.
Uh, so, I actually looked up
a few new books earlier,
and in the research, the Pain Control
guidelines were pretty clear.
We tend to treat severe cancer discomfort
with opioids,
but when large doses of those drugs
don't work,
providing adjuvant drug alternatives
is often effective for pain.
So I reviewed some related papers
and I found that
uh
adding diazepam
and a little dexamethasone,
uh, can reduce muscle spasms
and fight inflammation
near the sarcoma as well.
Which does tend to
to offer a little relief.
Um
And it felt like it was time to
to try something other than just chatting
and hanging out with her.
You've been wonderful.
Maybe it's because I slept so well,
but I saw my reflection,
and I don't look as sick as I used to.
My daughter's coming tomorrow.
I get to see her on New Year's Day,
and she'll be able to see me smiling
for once.
I am so grateful, doctor.
Oh, don't mention it.
Suddenly, you go above and beyond
when I don't ask you to?
Oh, yeah, I'm sorry.
I saw one of Sa-bi's books in the office
Finally.
Better late than never.
Crack a book more often.
I will. I'm sorry.
Listen, Jae-il,
I'll send you an Excel data sheet
about ovarian cancer rates.
Collate it for me, please.
[Jae-il] Sure, I can do that.
And if the data pans out,
we'll write the article together.
I'll make you first author.
So don't ruin it.
Yep.
-Good night, Doctor.
-Thanks, have a good night.
Oh, my God! Whoa, Jae-il, that's amazing!
What?
Huh?
No, I'm telling you, Dr. Jo
doesn't compliment anyone, it's true!
That wasn't He didn't do that.
He wants to write an article with you.
Are you kidding? That's huge!
I mean, it's unheard of
for Dr. Jo to ask an R1.
And he came to you!
Whoa. I I don't think this has
ever happened in Yulje's history.
-Oh, is that good, though?
-Duh, of course!
It's like he put a big sign on
your forehead, like a stamp of approval
You're gonna have more on your plate.
Um Jae-il, you nailed it.
You're officially in.
[clicks tongue] Poof, just like that,
you're not an idiot.
You know,
I thought I'd be an idiot forever.
But watching the interns
made me realize I'm actually okay.
[chuckles] You're not kidding.
Uh, who was it?
I don't know, there was this guy, though,
he thought there was a patient
with a skull fracture
when she had a runny nose.
And then he was all like, "Doctor, uh,
I think this might actually be
an aortic dissection!"
He was completely serious. He called
the attending physician. [chuckling]
Uh, that was back in March, I think.
Which intern was it?
That
was me.
I diagnosed that patient. [chuckles]
[both laughing]
-Oh, that was hilarious, Jae-il!
-[both laughing]
Oh, Dr. Seo asked me to bring her
something. Almost forgot.
-Be back later, okay?
-Pretty sure she's gone already.
["Amateur" by Mido and Falasol playing]
[sighs]
Weren't you holding onto that
for a rare occasion?
Mm-hmm, and we got one today.
-Did you win an award?
-I didn't.
You got a raise? Or did you
[gasps]
-You're turning 40?
-Uh, no.
So what is it?
Thought I was pretty clear. I got
what I want. You're good at your job now.
Yesterday, you sutured the uterus,
and today,
you took the placenta out, cord and all.
It's easy to see you have a nice touch.
Even with shortcomings, everyone winds up
at roughly the same level eventually.
Manual skills improve with repetition.
But to look up a procedure
and practice it,
just to make sure you know the patient
is in good hands with you,
that was surprising.
Especially considering
you've always been desperate to quit.
So, I'd say it's time to open this bottle.
It really wasn't all that great, Doctor.
It would be nice to have a little sip,
though. Let's drink it!
You mean right now?
Hey, this is a hospital.
We're not drinking it now.
Oh, why are we here then?
Take it. It's a present.
-It's a perfect night for a drink.
-Oh, I can't accept that.
-Let's have a drink some other time.
-I want you to take it, so take it.
Are you sure?
I'm honored. Thank you so much.
[cell phone ringing]
Hello.
Oh, really? All right, sounds good.
That was quick.
Nam Seol-i is fully dilated.
Already?
She's pushing as we speak.
I better head out. See ya later.
Hey, crack that open and let loose,
all right?
[door opens]
[door closes]
-[door opens]
-Wait, Doctor!
I'll drink another night.
I said you can leave.
You're not on call tonight.
Yeah, I know. It's just,
as her attending, I wanna see her child.
[cell phone ringing]
Yes, Doctor.
Of course, I'm on my way.
Transfer the patient, please!
[Seol-i groaning, panting]
[Jung-min] Okay, here we go,
I want you to push.
-Push!
-[Seol-i screams]
[gasping]
Good job, you're almost there.
Just one last push,
and you'll be able to meet your baby.
Dr. Oh, the baby's coming.
You'll deliver.
[Yi-young] What? Oh, no.
Doctor, hurry up. It'll be just like
the pottery wheel scene in Ghost.
-[Jung-min] Let's go!
-Okay.
All right, Miss Nam, just give us
one more big push now, please.
[strains]
[Jung-min] That's good.
Now lower the head slightly
so we can get the anterior shoulder out.
-There.
-[Yi-young] The shoulder's out.
Support the neck with one hand,
now slide your other hand down.
Yep, down toward the buttocks.
[baby crying]
Uh uh, the baby is out.
[panting] Oh, sweetheart.
You did it, honey.
-[crying]
-Oh, honey.
[man] You did great.
I'm so proud of you.
[Seol-i] How's the baby?
[man] Doing fine, the baby's great.
[Yi-young] Hello there.
[chuckles] Good job.
I'll take over. Sound good?
Congratulations, Miss Nam!
The baby is healthy.
We'll bring her over soon.
-[crying] Oh, my God, I'm so glad.
-Thank you so much.
[Seol-i] Thank you so much.
[man] You did a great job.
Great job, honey.
-Here's your baby.
-Hi, honey.
I'm your mother.
-I'm happy you came into the world.
-We both are.
[crying]
[gasps]
Mother's name, Nam Seol-i.
And the father's name, Do Se-ho.
Your baby was born January 1st, 2024
at exactly midnight. Congratulations.
Really?
Hey, congratulations!
[laughs] Right on New Year's!
-[nurse] Congratulations.
-[Yi-young] That's incredible.
-[laughs]
-[baby crying]
ANESTHESIA TIME, CURRENT TIME
SURGERY TIME
[instrument hissing]
So, how's it going?
[beeping steadily]
Everything's fine.
I'm tapering off the norepi,
and her vitals are still stable.
[both sigh]
-Seems like we've got it in hand.
-Yep, there's no bleeding either, Doctor.
Oh, I was terrified that something
was gonna go wrong.
-Okay, now we can finally
-Close up her stomach for good.
-[Jae-hui] Can I get a 1-0, please?
-[nurse] Yes, Doctor.
Oh, everyone,
I wish you all
a happy New Year.
Oh! Look, it's past midnight.
Hey, Happy New Year!
-Happy New Year, everyone!
-Happy New Year, guys.
Happy New Year.
Thanks. You too, Dr. Kim.
Right!
When she wakes up, let's say to her,
"My God, it's been so long,
we almost didn't recognize you."
"We met last year, remember?"
[chuckles]
"Oh! Whoa, wow! I can't believe it!
You're suddenly so much healthier."
Or not.
[laughs]
[all laughing awkwardly]
It's funny, right, Sa-bi?
It's okay. Don't pretend.
I know it wasn't funny.
[Eun-mi laughs]
But the thing is,
dumb little jokes like that,
they loosen the patient up,
and get them laughing.
It brightens their day.
That, in turn, speeds up their recovery.
[man sniffles] Mi-so,
say hi to Mom for us, all right?
I hope we meet again.
And then
[sniffles] I'll never have to
leave you behind. [crying]
[monitor beeps, flatlines]
January 1st, 2024.
Time of death, 12:15.
Miss Yeom has passed, I'm sorry.
[sobbing] Mi-so.
Mi-so! [sobbing]
SYSTEM IS SHUTTING DOWN
[melancholy music playing]
[sobbing]
[man] Sorry, excuse me, Doctor.
My sister,
did she suffer in the end?
I was hoping she didn't.
Please tell me her death
was painless and quick.
She was in pain quite often,
so we had her on a cocktail of drugs.
So I'm sure the
the pain subsided in the end. Don't worry.
[exhales]
[sniffles, sighs]
So she was all alone here, wasn't she?
She was so lonely all her life. [sniffles]
And I left her here.
She was by herself in the end.
No, sir.
I spent a little time with your sister.
I tried to speak to her.
I held her hand.
[cries]
There's a hymn she liked,
so I let her listen to it.
I believe the music helped.
She seemed at peace in the end.
Thank you so much.
Thank you so much. [sniffles]
[sniffles]
DEATH CERTIFICATE
CAUSE OF DEATH
[sobbing]
[nurse] I need an OB/GYN doctor here!
[Gi-on] Okay, ma'am,
take deep breaths for me.
Nice and slow, nice and slow.
What's going on?
Uh, she was just at home
and her water broke.
She came straight over here
from the parking lot.
Oh, how far along? Is this her first?
-Uh, I don't I don't know.
-[woman] Thirty-five weeks.
And it's it's my second one.
[breathing heavily]
My due date still isn't for a while.
Oh!
Oh! [gasps]
I I can see the baby's head coming out.
Wait, she's gonna have to give birth here.
Oh, please tell delivery.
Get the on-call supervisor!
-You got it.
-[woman groaning]
[Nam-kyung] Bring me a delivery set.
You're OB/GYN?
Yes.
-Right. Sorry, husbands have to wait out
-Honey, honey!
Are the baby and my wife going to be okay?
What's happening?
-The child's coming.
-Hey, it's okay.
[man] Oh, honey,
everything's going to be okay.
[woman whimpering, panting]
It hurts so bad.
I'm pretty sure there's no chance
of the child falling here.
Just stay calm and catch it.
Okay. Wait.
Are you a
[gasping]
Don't worry, I'll be right here, honey.
All right, deeper breaths, please.
Take deep breaths.
Okay.
Take a breath in, a nice deep breath,
and then push at the same time.
Push! Okay, good. Great job.
Now, let's do that once more, all right?
One more deep breath, please. Good.
-[breathing heavily]
-You're doing great.
Now, I want you to push, go ahead. Push!
-Great!
-[whimpering]
All right, the baby's on its way out.
Now, for the final push!
Oh, okay.
-[sniffles]
-[doctor] All right, ma'am.
One last time, I want you to take
a big deep breath and push.
Ready? Just one more deep breath,
then push. Here we go.
Now, one more push, that's it!
[grunts]
Ma'am, I need you to hold a bit longer
when you push.
Just breathe in again, and push out.
Okay, push now!
One, two, three, push!
[sighs]
["Superstar" by Mido and Falasol playing]
Time, 12:24, January 1st. Sex, male.
[exhales]
-Congrats, ma'am. You did great.
-[baby crying]
It's a good thing he's crying.
[crying]
-Oh, it's okay, it's okay.
-[Eun-won] What happened here?
[Moo-kang] Mm-hmm.
Oh, she's a multipara.
Her water broke early.
She came in crowning.
She almost didn't make it.
She looks okay.
Let's move upstairs to finish. [sighs]
You did great tonight.
[sighs]
[sighs]
Oh.
Huh? Where'd he go?
-[baby crying]
-[Moo-kang] Doctor, the baby's fine.
[Eun-won] All right.
["Nearer My God To Thee" playing]
[Jae-hui] Hey, are you okay?
Mm!
Oh! Oh, Miss So! Can you hear me okay?
Are you all right?
Yes.
What about you?
How you holding up?
Huh?
Oh. Good.
Oh, uh
Yeah, I've had my eye on her. Her urine
output's good and her vitals are stable,
so I've been tapering off her norepi.
Miss So, I checked your lab results.
They look pretty good.
All you need to do now is focus on
recovering from your surgery, ma'am.
And, also
Uh
Ah!
We had some tricky things
to navigate in surgery.
The bleeding was difficult to control,
there were
You know what?
I can tell you a bit later in more detail.
Wait. That's not all.
Ah, so, you'll be moved to the ward
as soon as your bed is ready.
I'll explain everything else
once you're there.
-[Jae-hui] Sound good?
-Hang on, guys, I still have more to say.
I know it's been a long time.
But you look so much better
than you did last year.
Gosh!
Oh, wow!
And, uh,
since then, your health
has really improved a lot.
[chuckles weakly]
It's January
1st, right?
The professor said getting you to laugh
might speed up recovery.
Get well soon.
Thanks for taking care of me
for two years.
It must've been a tough job.
Hope you have a happy New Year!
Happy New Year, Miss So.
Hope you have a happy New Year!
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
OB-GYN
1ST-YEAR RESIDENT LOUNGE
Hey.
You awake?
Rise and shine!
Oh, oh.
You just get in?
Did you guys sleep here last night?
[yawns] Couldn't make it out the door.
Oh, I'm so hungry.
Me too.
I could eat a whole elephant.
Mm, it's actually good.
Except the rice cakes are bloated.
Aren't they a sign of abundance
in the New Year?
-I thought that was only in the Fall.
-No, abundance is always good.
Abundant wealth, abundant pleasure,
abundant work too. Wait, not that.
On that note,
I checked out the horoscope for the year.
[sighs] It's gonna be very dry apparently,
except for a deluge of work.
Sounds like R2, right?
You know what Eun-mi said? We should
expect to be twice as busy as we are now.
Ugh, I'll never make it.
I don't want to. Why should I?
-[groans] Here we go.
-Watch, she'll stick it out the longest.
At this point, it's mostly hot air.
So I've been meaning to tell you guys
I'm not doing the second year.
I think I'll quit sometime after February.
-Hey, we have any kimchi?
-Mm-mm, kimchi's all gone.
This is better by itself.
Hey, I'm serious.
[scoffs] I wasn't gonna say this,
but I got a lottery ticket.
So, I won the jackpot.
[chuckles]
I don't need to have a job anymore.
Liar.
Uh-uh.
You're kidding me.
[chuckles]
Okay, I'll prove it.
Look.
You've probably never seen this.
Ta-da!
This will pay off my debt.
I won't have to work
as a resident anymore.
I mean, I'll probably just kick back
and then, find a new job somewhere else.
No rush.
Oh, no. [tuts]
[chuckling]
Oh, boy.
What?
This can't be right.
THE CLAIM PERIOD HAS EXPIRED
[sighs]
Please no.
Oh, God!
[whimpering dramatically]
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
What's everybody taking?
-A taxi.
-The bus.
-Me too.
-Taking the bus.
[gasps] Oh, wait a minute? Oh!
Ugh, why is nothing going my way?
Sorry, bye, guys!
Where's she going?
On a date, obviously.
Oh.
[groaning] Ow, God! Ow! Ow.
What? What's the matter?
The envy's killing me. I'm so jealous.
[sighs]
Good one. See you later.
Goodbye.
-Happy New Year.
-You too.
Let's go. Mm.
Mm.
[Jae-il] Wow, it's snowing.
Fresh snow on January 1st.
[chuckles]
Oh, Jo Joon-Mo asked me to write
an article about ovarian cancer.
So that would mean that the first-ever R1
to get Professor Jo's blessing
would be this guy here.
Professor Jae-Hui did a paper
on ovarian cancer that might be
a really good reference for organizing
the trial groups you want.
[Jae-il] Cool. Thanks.
You remember every article you read.
How do you do it?
File them based on value
and chronological order.
I also never move on to a new page
or chapter till my questions are resolved.
That's the core tenet.
[chuckles]
Your "core tenets." God, you're so cute.
Look, I I think you know I'm, um
well, the kind of person who has to
satisfy their curiosity, so
Are you catching feelings?
I didn't want to assume,
so I analyzed the evidence.
Number one, karaoke bar.
Number two was the churros.
And then number three,
the wheelchair thing.
'Cause you pretended you were in pain
when you weren't.
All right.
You're being so thorough.
You don't have to study me.
Besides, what's there to be
so curious about, huh?
Of course I
have a crush.
I'll admit it, it's true.
Hypothesis confirmed.
I
like you a lot.
And you?
-If you have feelings for me too
-I don't.
I do think of you, once in a while.
I even miss you sometimes, it's just that
I don't think I can go out with you yet.
One of my core tenets
is to get to know someone
through a full year before we date.
I mean, I'm not proposing here.
Core tenets don't matter right now.
Yeah, they do.
Hey, we only just met last March,
so I think
we need to get better acquainted first.
You know me already, though.
I'm not complex, Sa-bi.
And I really like you, so come on.
[Sa-bi] Would you stop saying that?
[Jae-il] Hey, Kim Sa-bi,
I really, really like you.
-[Sa-bi] I said stop it!
-I'm into you, Sa-bi!
[Sa-bi] Knock it off.
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
TAXI
Are you heading out?
Yeah.
Mm.
-Are you okay?
-Huh?
Oh.
Yeah.
Thanks for your help today.
Yeah.
Uh, Doctor.
I chose a concentration, you know?
Oh, yeah?
Don't you want to know which one?
OB/GYN.
I'll be working with you.
you will?
You're not joking?
Don't go back on your word.
I won't let you change it, okay?
[chuckles] Okay.
You won't regret this, trust me.
You chose the right specialty.
And I'll I'll go easy on you.
Okay.
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
-I hope we work well together.
-Oh.
Me too.
[chuckles]
Mm?
[cell phone buzzing]
[buzzing stops]
[exhales]
Oh, I'm so sorry.
I've been all over the place today.
Oh! Oh, uh
Huh?
How did you know where I was?
You didn't pick up
and you weren't in your office,
so I thought you'd be here.
It's still January 1st.
It's 11:40. Twenty minutes left.
Happy New Year!
Um
Yeah, Happy New Year, yeah.
What a day.
There were so many unexpected births.
Every time I turned around,
someone was in labor.
I almost paid off my debt,
then it turned out I didn't win
'cause the date was expired.
Today's just been really
I wasn't gonna give it to you like this.
I was really hoping to surprise you.
Well, what is it?
Oh, this. I thought you deserved a reward
for getting through R1.
Plus, I hope you'll stay the course
in R2 and keep going.
Right. I appreciate that.
Thank you, doctor.
Hey, your seat, is it okay?
What'd you mean?
Uh, under underneath.
I'm sorry that this moment
isn't more special.
You mind?

So, what's this?
Why do I deserve this ring?
'Cause I love you.

JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
[announcer] We now invite today's guest
for his retirement speech.
Im Dong-ju,
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
[cheering]
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR RETIREMEN
PROFESSOR IM DONG-JU, OB-GYN
It's been 40 years since I began here.
A doctor in OB/GYN.
I've exchanged countless greetings
with patients over the years,
and in honoring the Hippocratic Oath,
we must also accept that
where there is life, there is death.
But the farewell
I must say to all of you today
is the most difficult moment
of my long career.
[chuckles] You know,
it's not easy to admit this,
but when I began, it took me longer
than most to find my way.
[chuckles]
I wasn't a promising student.
I felt very insecure for awhile.
And I spent so much time
with my nose in a book,
that I never learned
how to become a better doctor.
Despite those shortcomings,
I've been lucky enough
to make it all the way to retirement.
But that would never have happened
without all the wonderful people
I've met here at Yulje.
With your dedication and support,
all of you have allowed me to maintain
my faith and trust in this profession,
through every moment of despair
[Jung-min] I wanted to choose someone
who could inspire
faith and trust in any situation.
Someone that could inspire all of us.
So I asked all the nurses and residents
since they work with the entire
medical staff, to submit their thoughts,
because they have more insight
into the candidates
compared to those of us
sitting behind a desk.
I must say, it was incredibly helpful.
Taking all that into consideration,
I'd like to appoint a doctor
with the utmost integrity
and a forthright approach,
someone who holds process above outcomes,
a person we can all rely on.
So I've decided
that our new professor will be
this young woman right here.
Yes, hello, Professor.
I really appreciate you giving me
the news in advance.
Oh, no, I'm fine. Don't worry about that.
Thank you, Professor.
All right.
[screams]
[breathes heavily, screams]
[sobbing]
[Dong-ju] Many patients
have also served as great teachers,
as I've tried to improve as a doctor,
and more importantly, as a human being.
In particular, I have to thank those
who gave me the courage to fail boldly,
the humility to learn, and the insight
to know when it's time to let go.
Those are the reasons I've been able to
grow and flourish as a person.
Well, your blood test indicates
a level below point two for HCG.
Ah.
You're not pregnant.
Not this round.
Uh, Doctor, do you think, uh,
would a a second blood panel be
a good idea?
I don't think that will help, I'm sorry.
[Seung-won] Oh, I understand.
You should take a break for a few months,
and focus on boosting your health
so that you're in good head space
moving forward.
And when you're ready,
we can start over from step one.
We've had some people go through ten
rounds before their IVF finally worked.
I know that.
I truly admire the kind of courage
they all have.
[doctor] Mm.
I just don't think
I have one more round in me, Doctor.
[inhales, sighs]
So
I'm going to stop here.
Right.
["Breath" by MINNIE playing]
All right, it's time to stop, then.
I'm sure if we were already parents,
we'd be happy to stop.
How great it must be to say,
"Aw, I think I was born
to be a mother to this little child."
I know everyone thinks you need kids
to feel complete,
and without them, our lives
are hardly even worth living
Well, I'm gonna prove everyone wrong.
'Cause if this is what they call
an incomplete life,
I'd say it can be pretty darn good.
I'll have to look within myself
to discover the joy that a child
would've brought us.
In the next stage of my life,
I won't worry anymore.
I will be kind to myself.
I can live happily again.
[breathes heavily]
Thank you so much for everything.
Of course. I wish you the best.
[chuckles]
[Seung-won sniffles]
[Dong-ju] Thanks to everyone,
I can leave this profession behind
without any regrets or misgivings.
For that, I am grateful.
Thank you.
Thank you for everything.
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR RETIREMEN
Thank you. Thank you all.
This is very kind.
-Thank you.
-[crowd cheering]
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR RETIREMEN
PROFESSOR IM DONG-JU, OB-GYN
[crying]
[indistinct chatter]
I've been seeing you a lot.
Mm. Funerals, retirements,
it's been pretty hectic.
Gosh, it's crazy how time flies, huh?
Our revered professor
is hanging up his white coat.
I know.
Feels like yesterday,
he was teaching our med school classes.
Hey, remember when we had to play
new mothers in labor?
Not everyone took to the exercise
very well.
[chuckles] Oh, yeah.
Lee Ik-jun screamed so loud,
he got vocal nodules.
-[both laughing]
-Put on a quite a show.
No, I mean it, I'm so jealous.
Seriously, I'm jealous.
-Hello, Professor.
-How are you?
-[Sa-bi] Morning.
-[Jae-il] Hello.
Oh. It's our intrepid R1s!
This is Professor Yang Seok-hyeong
from the main branch.
-Oh. Good morning, sir.
-Nice to meet you.
[laughs]
Go get yourselves some breakfast.
Make sure you're ready for rounds.
-Right.
-Will do.
-[Sa-bi] You sound like you hate it.
-[Jae-il] No, I said I don't hate it.
I am jealous! Seriously, guys.
-Those are your R1s?
-Mm-hmm.
Adorable, right? Skilled as well.
What a nice cohort.
Competent, capable, good judgement,
and strong nerves.
Mm. And how would you know?
Uh, you know me,
I can just tell by looking.
-Are you telling me you're clairvoyant?
-It's clear as day you taught them all.
You were always an excellent teacher.
If you weren't in that study group,
I would've flunked out.
That was several lifetimes ago.
Although, I got to say,
I'm really awesome.
I'm great at teaching,
so you're not wrong.
No, I know you are.
And that's why I'm trusting you
with one of my best people.
[knock on door]
Oh, uh, I just wanted to say hi.
[chuckles] Ah, there she is!
[chuckles] Good to see you
outside a conference.
Yes, likewise, Doctor.
It's so wonderful to see you again.
-Yes, you too.
-[chuckles]
The thing is,
I feel a bit nervous
to put my complete trust in you.
Oh? Why is that?
Everyone I ask tells me
you're such a spectacular person,
and I find that hard to comprehend.
I see. Well, just know, I have been known
to pick up the check once in a while.
I've also heard something else,
that you're overly modest too!
[both laughs]
Uh, Doctor Ah! Sorry.
Um, Professor, it's been too long.
Congrats on your new position!
[scoffs] Hey, don't make this awkward.
-Just try to act normal, Do-won.
-I can't do that!
You're a professor now,
gotta suck up to you.
[scoffs]
I'm really lucky to have someone like you
on my side,
especially from the get-go, mm?
All humor aside, I look forward
to working with you. [chuckles]
Oh, and this is Dr. Myeong Eun-won.
Oh, right, you worked at
the main office together.
Uh, we did.
Yes, it's been a while, Dr. Myeong.
Uh, I hope I'll be able
to rely on you here.
Great.
I hope you will feel at home here
Professor.
Oh, thanks. [chuckles] Thank you so much.
[knock on door]
[grunts]
Congrats, Professor Chu Chu!
I asked for a bouquet prettier than you,
but the florist said that doesn't exist!
[comical music playing]
[sighs]
I thought you were alone. [sighs]
Uh, sorry.
[door closes]
That was my husband. [chuckles] He must've
thought we were finished in here.
He's always had a big heart.
That's how he is, you know?
[both laugh]
Anyway, thank you all
for the warm welcome today.
I'll do my very best to be worthy
of you all.
We will too! [chuckles]
Welcome! Congrats!
Congratulations!
[chuckling]
-[Yi-young] See you later!
-[Do-won] Bye!
[Joo-young] I genuinely didn't think
she'd last a year.
I know.
I was wondering,
do you think she finds joy
in her work yet?
I hoped she would've found
a sense of purpose.
-Honestly, I doubt it.
-You think?
-Sixteen million left in debt?
-Mm-hmm.
Well, let's hope she never manages
to pay it off.
What if we increased her rent this year?
Oh, what are they doing?
Are the two of them holding hands?
-Holding hands?
-[gasps]
-The fist fight!
-Oh, you're right. Oh!
-Guess they finally made up!
-[sighs in relief]
[Joo-young] Gosh.
They were being so stubborn, you'd think
they'd never talk to each other again.
-Not the case.
-I know. [chuckles]
-Aw, look.
-[both chuckle]

Oh. Is that new? It must be.
-I've had it for a while.
-It's pretty.
-[Sa-bi] Anyone seen my pen?
-[Jae-il] Here.
[Sa-bi] It's blue.
-Here.
-Thank you.
-For lunch, tteokbokki sound good?
-Yep!
-And make it spicy. With rice balls.
-[Nam-kyung] That goes without saying.
Yes! Yi-young, you're in, right?
It's crazy. You all still act the same.
You guys haven't changed.
-I hope you never do.
-[chuckles]
What was that?
Hey, better hurry.

I hope you never do!

Ah, we ordered drinks, like, an hour ago.
Why aren't they coming, I wonder?
Oh, yeah! Hey!
PUB BY THE HOSPITAL
I, uh I got these drinks
for you guys today.
-They looked tasty.
-Wow, this isn't like you at all.
Gotta be true.
Let's do a toast with these,
then we can talk.
Okay? Cheers, cheers. Here we go!
[exhales] Okay, so, go on!
Is it true?
You two are
Um, here's the thing
Okay, here are your beers, guys.
-Appreciate it.
-Thanks.
His timing's too good. [clears throat]
[glass thuds]
I live with Ku Du-won.
He's my brother-in-law.
-We're together. All right?
-[gasps]
-Whoa.
-[Sa-bi] So it's true.
-You called it.
-That's enough.
I saw them, I told you!
Hey, Yi-young, I kept your secret!
Hey, when did you start going out?
Who approached who first?
Do your folks know? God, you're
double in-laws! Are you double in-laws?
-Okay!
-[gasps]
Listen, the two of us are happy,
and I appreciate your support, I do.
Please just, um
Please keep it quiet at work.
Okay, we'll keep it quiet.
Rumors at the hospital
would put a damper on things.
I don't know who I'd tell.
You know, Yi-young,
I'm a little pissed, okay?
You could've spilled it earlier.
It's just that
Sorry, guys.
It's fine. Don't worry, we forgive you.
And 'cause you owe us,
you're getting the check! [smacks lips]
-Okay!
-Yes!
Yay! Hey, let's order the pollock.
I heard it's good.
-Ooh, the mitre squid is amazing too.
-Oh, I ordered squid already.
Hey, sir! Can we order some whelks,
dried pollock
Nachos and fries!
Nachos and sweet potato fries, thank you!
[keyboard clacking]
Excuse me, Doctor.
Miss Lee Sang-rim in the MFICU
I decided to prescribe the tocolytic.
Hook it up when the other's finished.
Right, regarding Miss Kim Go-yun,
I just checked the meds she's on
and told her to finish those off for now.
Gosh, your fingers have
a mind of their own.
[chuckles] Yeah, I know.
I used to be so slow, but now,
I can't believe it ever took that long.
Oh! Are you going out later?
[chuckles] Well,
I have a date later tonight.
You're so lucky! I'm so jealous of you.
Taking a hiatus from dating?
More like pushed
into retirement prematurely.
I mean, how do I get to know someone
if I'm always working?
[sighs] Is this why everyone dates
their coworkers?
Date their coworkers? [chuckles]
Who is it? Who's together?
Uh [sighs]
I, um, don't think I'm allowed to say.
Do we have a new couple besides Dr. Oh?
What? How did you know?
Oh
I, uh
Didn't I say, "Please don't tell anyone"?
-[chuckles nervously]
-[chuckles awkwardly]
Hmm.
-And, so
-Oh, there's more?
For Yoon Hui-ok, I had a consultation with
GS and confirmed a date for the operation.
How did you know to do that?
Did I explain that to you?
Oh, her chart made it clear she requested
a chemo port ahead of her surgery,
so I made the arrangements.
Wow.
Wow.
And, oh, Na Seo-hyeon was scheduled
for a BSO to preserve her ovaries.
But we changed it to a bilateral
ovarian cystectomy today.
-Just making sure to remind you.
-Well, thank you for the reminder.
-Sure.
-Oh, hey, professor.
Hello, Dr. Ku. Shouldn't you be studying?
Have you even started?
Ah, wait,
you already know all the material!
-Don't have to crack a book?
-Oh, no!
I have plenty to study, I'm just busy.
I'm gonna have to start in January.
Obstetrics stole him from us.
They took this talented guy away.
[chuckles] Thanks, Professor.
So, well, I better get back to it.
-Have a good one.
-Yeah, you too.
Ah, shame to lose him.
Gosh, I really wish
I had a daughter for him.
That wouldn't do you any good.
He's already seeing a girl.
Oh, really?
Who is it? Who is she?
I'm not allowed to say.
Means it's someone here.
It's Yi-young. Oh Yi-young.
Mm, Oh Yi-young.
The one with with the bob.
-She's that one?
-Uh, no, she keeps it long.
Okay, but, she's tall, though?
Oh, no. No, I'm taller than her.
Oh, yeah?
Ah!
Oh, right, I know. She's the cool girl.
She's the intern who decided on Neurology.
Yes. Bingo, Professor.
Ah, no kidding. Who knew!
They're not quite, um I don't know.
So, for how long? Is it serious?
We have scheduling issues tomorrow.
Yeah, I thought about this.
We'll wrap up the first OP in OR-seven,
the TLH can move to the last opening,
and OP Room 10 for the explo lapa?
Oh. Not bad, could work.
[chuckles] When'd you figure all that out?
Wow, you doing extra work?
That's as rare as a major earthquake.
Come on, that's not out of the ordinary.
I got something
really out of the ordinary to tell you.
Dr. Ku has been seeing
[sighs] Oh, man, they still together?
-Huh?
-I didn't think it would last.
I guess Dr. Oh's been good for him.
-How do you Wait, how do you know?
-Everyone does, right?
It's pretty obvious.
I gotta get going. See you later.
Boy, so much for a secret relationship
if people know.
Everybody I run into knows.
You know too?
Your installment-based savings plan
matured a few days ago.
We'll transfer the funds soon,
so expect a deposit.
Most people can't stay the course,
but you did. Congratulations.
I appreciate that.
KU DO-WON
Thank so much.
So is there anything else
I can help you with?
Actually, I'd love to do a one year plan.
Ah, a short-term installment savings plan?
Yeah.
Truth is, I'll need the cash soon, so
[Nam-kyung] Wait, so, by soon
[Sa-bi] Do you mean
[Jae-il] For a wedding?
Yep. [chuckles]
[all exclaiming]
What the heck are you doing?
Why are you here?
Don't you guys have rounds? And charting?
[all] Boo!
Scram, you guys. Get out.
Yes, sir.
Your, um, new in-laws here
will see you around. Goodbye.
[scoffs]
Whoa! It's Yi-young.
[laughing]
-Whoo! Got you!
-Get outta here! Get to work. Move it.
-[Nam-kyung] Catch ya later, Romeo!
-Go away.
So childish. God.

Thing is, both candidates' evaluations

Man, time flies when you're having fun.
We only have one day left of this year.
It feels like we were just
introducing ourselves.
I know, right?
[groans] Not to mention
we're all gonna be 29.
I can't believe it. That's crazy.
I can't either. The way you spend,
I don't know how
you're not living in your car.
[blowing]
I got a present for myself, so what?
It's the holidays.
You got yourself a gift last month
as well. The pendant.
Oh, this? Black Friday sale.
It was so cheap, I had to go for it.
It was a steal.
-A steal.
-[sighs]
You're not gonna learn your lesson
till you're sitting on a mountain of debt.
Hey, enough with the nagging.
You sound like my mother, seriously.
-[scoffs]
-[Jae-il snoring]
Ugh, he's so loud.
Did he sleep here again?
Mm-hmm. The last few days,
he's been up every night.
-[snoring continues]
-Why?
Pretty sure there's
some cervical cancer patient in his ward
who's up all night with terrible pain.
The drugs aren't working on her.
So she calls him every other hour.
Why not sleep here and go when she calls?
Uh, guess he's more comfortable
staying close.
I don't think he wants her to be alone.
She's not alone, though.
I mean, her personal caregiver's there.
No, I meant she doesn't have relatives
or like, anyone
[sighs] Do I have to spell this out?
-[Jae-il moaning]
-He's way too good-natured.
And she's way too cruel.
[sighs] If only we could combine
you two, right?
Unfortunately, you're like oil and water.
-[Jae-il moans]
-[cell phone rings]
Uh-huh?
Yep, on my way, okay?
[whimpering softly]
-Hello. How are you?
-[whimpers]
Did you, uh, get some rest last night?
[exhales]
No, didn't sleep a wink last night,
I'm afraid.
It feels like my pelvis,
my gut and entire back
are all getting slowly ripped to shreds.
Pain control? You try anything?
Yes, morphine in an IV drip
and some Percocet.
She had some discomfort overnight too,
so I increased her meds.
Hmm.
There is a risk of blood clots
from extended rest, especially lying down.
So exercise would do you good, if you
[groans] I can't do that.
The pain is excruciating.
[breathing heavily]
I understand.
Well, I apologize.
Check on her as much as you can.
-Sure.
-Hmm.
[patient whimpering]
We'll take care of you.
I'll hang out
at the nurses' station tonight.
Call me if you feel pain, okay?
I'll come right away.
[whimpers]
[yawning]
Have you even slept at all this month?
How are you holding up?
[sighs] Hanging in there.
I have to keep visiting her. She needs it.
Can't do much else, though.
Now I understand
why all the patients ask for you.
You know, it's an honor
to have someone ask for you.
'Cause it means you're actually useful.
Look, barely a few months ago,
I was basically invisible.
No one cared or noticed.
Hmm, seriously?
Mm-hmm. Yeah, so trust me, okay?
Being useless to everybody is horrible.
Oh.
What's going on there?
-Hey, hello.
-[Ju-yeon] Hey, everyone.
[muffled sobbing]
[sobbing continues]
[sighs]
What's going on?
Eun-mi's first patient,
the one she saw through all that pain,
the first real person in her care
she just died.
Ah.
She was there from her admission
to the last round of chemo. It's just
the patient went downhill so quick,
it's hitting her hard.
We have to give her a little while to cry
before she goes into surgery.
-Call me if there's anything urgent.
-Yep.
[sighs]
[sighs]
Huh?
Not time for rounds yet, is it?
Ms. So! Hello there.
How are you feeling today?
Are you thinking about your surgery?
You look pretty worried.
I thought I'd be less afraid
'cause I've done this before.
Guess not.
I'm so scared I can't even sleep.
Oh, no. You should be getting
plenty of rest right now.
Doctor, I notice that you're alone.
You were alone last time as well.
Yes, that's right.
I was always really good
at flying solo, you know?
Because I'm a huge
Top Gun fan. [chuckling]
It's just,
I thought famous doctors went around
with an entourage of junior doctors.
Well, people say you never get to see them
'cause they're so busy.
But you're in our room constantly.
Are you not busy?
I thought you were a master physician,
that's why I came, but now
Right, first of all,
no physician's a master.
But, in every surgery and treatment,
I try to do my best, truly.
'Cause that's all I can do, you see?
I enjoy making my rounds.
Also I can't drag around
a bunch of aspiring doctors with me
when they have plenty to do.
It'd be a waste of manpower.
That kind of thing only happens
on television.
In real hospitals, well,
there aren't a plethora of junior doctors
for a personal entourage. Okay?
I was told you do the most operations
of any doctor in this hospital.
-Is that really true?
-[Sa-bi] Yes, it's true.
He does tons of surgeries.
He's extremely skilled.
No need to worry, trust me.
And he was on an episode of a TV show
about Korea's best doctors too.
We actually call him Jae's Anatomy.
Oh, really?
Hey, wait, hang on. Oh, don't uh
[chuckles] get too impressed.
Where did you come from, huh?
Go away, stop it okay?
I'm blushing now. Just stop it, you.
-Yeah, I'm done.
-That was it? Oh. Okay.
-Why're you here?
-Uh, right, I brought her test results.
Last time she was here,
her hemoglobin was in the nines,
but it's up to the 12s in pre-op.
That's great news.
With the adhesions in your pelvis,
the major risk is serious bleeding
in this sort of surgery.
With these results, though, I'm sure
we won't need to do a transfusion.
Won-ju, this is big!
Mm. That's great.
Most of what I hear is bad news.
So when I hear anything good,
I feel so relieved.
[Jae-hui] Hmm, listen,
this is a really positive sign,
but I want you to get plenty of sleep.
Then you'll go to surgery,
and we'll do our very best.
-That's great. Thank you.
-We appreciate it.
Thank you. Hmm.
Ah, just remember we all "Won-ju" to rest.
Or, um Forget it, see ya. [giggling]
Sir. Just letting you know
I got verbal confirmation from Radiology
and talked to Vascular
to give them a heads up.
Already?
I've requested blood for transfusion, and
will re-brief the patient on anesthesia.
I also checked on the ICU bed
one final time.
Hey.
You do know you're allowed
to breathe, right?
Yep. [breathes deeply]
What's wrong?
-You're worried, aren't you?
-Yes.
There's bad adhesion. It spans
her small intestine and her whole pelvis.
I don't know. I think the bleeding
could get severe.
Mm. I think so too.
And I know you'll be fine,
because you do this all the time,
I just still get
freaked out when there's
a prospect of blood like that.
I still get that way too.
Mm-hmm, you're not alone in this.
We're the freaked out duo.
But, here's the thing
She's super-resilient.
She got good test results.
Her work is done here. It's our turn.
So, everything else depends on us.
Not only that, we both know there's bound
to be plenty of blood as well.
I'm horrified too.
So, that is why I do these rounds.
And tell my stupid jokes too.
'Cause everyone deserves some hope.
Mm. I do what I can.
Oh.
Could I ask you for a favor?
I could use the motivation.
Can you repeat
your pep talk from earlier?
-Huh?
-What you said in front of the patient.
Oh, you do the most surgeries
and you're really skilled.
No, no one cares about that part, no.
You were on that TV show.
You're Jae's Anatomy?
[chuckling bashfully]
Oh, that's so good.
I'm not cool enough
to take the lead part in the crown jewel
of Shondaland.
Hey, that's so Mm-mm.
If the fans heard you say that,
they'd come after you with pitchforks.
-Back then, too?
-Yes, and
[Yi-young] Professor.
The patients I called about
are in the labor room.
Oh, let's go. Thank you.
-See you later.
-Of course.
-Hi, how are you?
-Hello.
This is Miss Nam's second birth.
The first was in 2015.
She's fingertip dilated. I admitted her
with contractions ten minutes apart.
Usually, the second time around,
things go a bit faster.
But it's been eight years
since your first,
and based on the way things are going,
it looks like you
might have to wait a little longer.
[chuckles] Okay.
Gosh, I don't know if it's 'cause
it's my second kid,
but I'm more freaked out this time.
Don't worry, we'll take care of you.
Second time's better.
-[woman] No way! Is it really that good?
-It's just
-My first child ended up being bigger
-[woman continues loudly]
No, for real.
Well, yeah, sure, but
Yeah, the baby could get here on the 31st.
Oh. You're telling me, um,
if it's in January, that means the child
is gonna be lucky forever?
Oh, if they're born at midnight
on the 1st, it's even better? Got it.
God, it's amazing how your fate
could change 'cause of one day, you know?
Wait, but I'm sure that's unlucky too.
Sorry, we're Give me a second.
-Two minutes. Sorry.
-Uh-huh.
She got pregnant via IVF.
It was pretty tough.
So a lucky baby is important.
Tomorrow's December 31st too.
Occasionally, you do see someone
who really,
really wants their child
to be born in the new year, so
Or born right at midnight on 1st January.
[gasps] Oh.
So that's why she's acting a fool.
Hey everyone, Jin-Hui here!
[chuckling] I have huge news.
They said my water just broke,
and now the due date is even sooner.
It could be tomorrow.
Who knows,
my little girl is on her way out.
Honestly, I think I just might
try to save her for New Year's eve!
Seriously, how amazing would it be
to have my baby
on January 1st at midnight?
Super good vibes for the new year.
So don't forget to hit that like.
Oh, I'm so sorry, we were just, uh,
just filming a little video. [laughs]
-So sorry.
-That's my bad!
-We're almost done.
-Sorry!
[all chuckle]
You're asking for too much.
The baby's health is all that matters.
Her Doljabi won't decide her destiny.
[chuckles]
Um, Min-hye,
listen, I really wanted
to go to the party,
but it's my mother-in-law's birthday
that day.
Why are you apologizing?
[scoffs] You don't need to be
on eggshells when we talk.
Yeah, my blood test is really soon.
Embryo transfer, yeah.
Everything's gonna be fine,
don't worry about me.
Hey, I'll be fine.
Right, oh, sure, we'll chat later. Uh-huh.
-Hey, Seung-won.
-Oh!
Oh, wait. Honey, that you?
What's going on?
-You're just out here by yourself?
-[laughs]
-Eavesdropping?
-Uh-uh.
Why'd you run off?
I was too cold.
-[chuckles]
-[scoffs]
[shivers]
Min-hye called.
Oh, isn't she, like,
one of your oldest friends?
She was at Yi-young's graduation,
did our wedding toast too.
She couldn't get pregnant last year,
so she opted for IVF.
-Oh?
-Well, uh, she ended up getting pregnant.
Oh.
-She's already turning one. Look.
-[gasps]
-So adorable, right?
-Oh, she's cute!
[chuckling]
So, you didn't wanna go to her party?
[Joo-young] Mm-mm.
I didn't want to go. [sighs]
So I just made up a story.
Good for you.
I don't know why,
but I'm so annoyed she invited me.
I wish she wouldn't tip-toe
around me either.
I get so angry when she calls
and says she's "checking in."
[crying] The thing
I hate the most right now is
my own jealousy.
I'm so disgusted with it,
you have no idea. [crying]
You're nervous about your blood test.
Don't be so hard on yourself, Joo-Young.
I hate what this is turning me into.
[crying]
I feel like I'm such a huge mess lately.
Come on, honey.
You're so strong.
-But I know how you feel.
-[sobbing]
Your hands are so cold! Oh, my!
Let's go in, huh? Oof! So cold! Brr! Hmm?
[both chuckle]
All right. Ooh, it's so cold.
Why're you packing if you don't know
when you're moving yet?
Gotta get a head-start
while I have spare time.
Second year is so busy,
you won't have time for this.
-We could go clean your room instead.
-I cleaned it last week.
Are you kidding?
I really cleaned it.
That's clean to you?
If second year's busier,
will I be able to see you?
I'll be doing more deliveries.
Yeah, true. Still, you won't have to do
all the crap you did in first year.
I heard we might not have R1s.
Oh. If that happens,
it'll be really tough.
Well, I can always quit medicine.
Don't.
C'mon, it was a bad joke.
Besides, I'll have to work
till I clear my debt.
You know, actually, I'm pretty close.
Only 19 million won left.
Whoa, almost there, huh?
[sighs]
Overdraft accounts, don't you hate them?
Oh!
Look, I'm gonna take care
of this one myself, I think.
This drawer's just a huge mess.
Mm. Okay.
TO MY DO-WON
FROM YOUR SONGSONG
"My handsome sweetheart,
studying so hard must be tough,
honey pie."
"But if it makes you feel better, I can
hardly focus 'cause I miss you so much!"
"Sometimes, I feel like I care more
about you than you do about me."
"And then, I get really sad!" [grunts]
[gulps]
[Seung-won] What are you doing?
-Were you guys just
-[both gasping]
-Were you in some kinda fist fight?
-[sighs]
Oh, Yi-young, lower your elbow.
If you hit him in the solar plexus,
he's dead. Goodness!
When are you going to start acting
your age?
God, you're sick, bro!
[sighs]
That's not true! Hang on!
It wasn't a fight, guys!
I was helping him with something!
[sighs]
[groans]
Oh, right.
Please, please, please.
YOU WERE UNSUCCESSFUL
Ugh!
I always lose.
Wait, how old is this one?
CONGRATULATIONS!
YOU'VE WON 32,984,892 WON
[cell phone thuds]
[gasps]
[gasps]
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
[Yi-young humming]
[woman] Can I get a hot americano, please?
[cashier] That'll be 1,500 won.
[humming]
-[cashier] It went through.
-[chuckles]
-[woman] Great.
-[cell phone ringing]
[cashier] They'll bring it out to you.
Thanks.
Hi. Oh Yi-young speaking.
[woman] Yes, hello,
I'm calling from your bank.
It's regarding the extension
of your overdraft account.
Oh, my overdraft
Yes, if you'd like to roll it over again
next year
I'd need to show proof of employment,
am I right?
Yes. If you choose not to roll it over
and repay the balance on the account,
you'd owe just under 20 million won.
I'll do that.
-Yeah, I'll just repay.
-All right then.
In that case, the account
will remain valid until January 21st.
All right. Thank so much.
[humming]
Dr. Oh?
Good morning, Doctor.
You've assembled the data for this month?
Could you please send it my way tonight?
Include the patient and children's data
for today's deliveries.
I could use some more time to
I have to do some MFICU
post-op ultrasounds.
Could you prepare that? Make it quick.
Though, coffee is crucial.
[chuckles]
No, I'm okay.
I'll be on my way. Gotta get to it.
Take my place in line, though
You go ahead. [chuckles]
What the
-[Moo-kang] We're working on it.
-What's gotten into her?
Right. I think we can get it to you soon.
On our end, things might be
a little tighter, unfortunately.
I don't think I've seen this before.
-Hey! Sun's out! Rise and shine!
-[gasps]
Already?
-You must not have slept again.
-Mm-hmm.
Yeah, it's that patient. Her pain is
getting worse, so she's miserable.
[yawning]
All those calls, God.
-[groaning]
-Uh-huh.
Are you sure
it's smart to dose her that often?
-Don't overdo it.
-I don't give her drugs at night.
I just get up to check on her.
No meds, huh?
Um, what are you checking?
Well, as her pain gets worse,
she gets lonely and down on herself.
So to comfort her, I mostly just hang out.
Oh.
Does that
Does that actually help dissipate
her pain, though?
Huh?
She's not calling you
because she wants to hang out.
The problem's the pain, right?
So heartless.
You told me cancer's
giving her pelvic pain,
but her whole body aches
because of metastasis.
You've had her on morphine
for three days, and the pain is worse.
Mm-hmm.
And you think I should go home
and not worry?
Wait, I'm not saying
Hmm?
I think I think you and me
are just polar opposites.
-Whoa, where you going?
-Surgery.
[door closes]

SURGERY STATUS
GOODBYE 2023
SENDING OFF THE LAST SUNSET WITH HOPE
ANESTHESIA TIME, CURRENT TIME
SURGERY TIME
-How are her vitals?
-Her BP is low.
EBL, 1,100.
We're giving her vasopressors
with the transfusions,
but her vitals aren't stabilizing.
The tumor's been removed,
and we've stopped most of the bleeding,
but her whole pelvic floor is oozing.
Let's move her.
We're transferring the patient to the ICU!
[nurse] Got it.
[Sa-bi] She'll keep bleeding,
is that okay?
[Jae-hui] Rolled gauze, please.
For now, we'll apply pressure
to stop the bleeding.
We won't find
the microvascular hemorrhages.
Her organs are too swollen right now.
If we keep delaying this, things are
just going to get worse for her.
All right, let's pack the inside.
Once we get some compression,
we'll open her back up to check,
then close.
CURRENT TIME, SURGERY TIME
[patient] Wait, stop,
it's only 4:20 right now!
Wait, hey, I can hold out a little bit.
Wait a second, please!
-[Jung-min] Push!
-[strains]
[gasping]
Midnight on the 1st,
psychic said that's ideal
if I want a future head of state.
-Ma'am, please.
-Couldn't we hold off for a few hours?
Please wait a bit longer.
[pants]
I'm sorry, but I just can't do this today.
I'm sorry, ma'am. The baby's the one
making this decision, not us.
Please push on the count of three.
One, two, three. [inhales]
[straining]
[exhales, pants]
[squelching]
Congratulations, the baby's out.
Hello there!
Excellent job, Miss Yong.
[baby crying]
Now, all we need to do
is safely remove the placenta.
How is she? Is she okay?
Yes, we'll give her to you shortly.
-Dr. Oh, time for the placenta.
-[Yi-young] Of course.
Oh, wait, me?
Oh, I'm not ready to
I've walked you through it.
Easy. Nice and easy
Um, ease up a little.
Move aside.
Didn't I tell you not to try
to pull it out all at once?
You completely severed the cord.
You were yanking on it way too hard.
I'm sorry, Doctor.
Mom is Yong Hui-seon,
Dad is Jeon Tae-san, correct?
[Hui-seon] Yeah.
I'm happy to say your little girl was born
at 4:28 p.m. on December 31st.
-[crying]
-I'm so sorry, sweetheart!
I'm so sorry.
I gave birth to you way too early.
[baby crying]
-[indistinct shouting]
-["We Wish You a Merry Christmas" playing]
[man] I said stop it, you bastard.
Oh, no.
It's the holiday season,
all right. [sighs]
Doctor.
Yes?
Uh, I was about to call you, actually.
What's going on?
-You better come with me and take a look.
-Okay.
She has cervical cancer,
although, general weakness
and dyspnea were her first complaints.
Uh-huh.
Lab results are odd and inconclusive.
-BP's always dropping.
-[blows out]
She's bedridden too, to top it off.
BP's what right now?
RADIATION CONTROL AREA
60/40, even though she's on pressors.
[sighs] Well, that's a lot of bad news,
isn't it?
She also made sure to put in a DNR.
She was pretty adamant.
Mm. All right, thank you.
I'm gonna take a look
Oh, what's her name?
[Gi-on] Yeom Mi-so.
Thirty-eight years old.
She was receiving follow-up care
after her last round of chemotherapy
here in October.
[machine hissing]
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
[sighs]
Have you checked on Miss Yong?
How are her contractions?
Good. I've been up to see her.
Healthy contractions, no hematomas at all.
Good. All right.
How about the fortune teller?
How'd that go?
Well, I called her psychic myself.
-We found a middle ground.
-Oh?
We decided being born on the 1st
is a sign of delayed luck,
so the baby couldn't be the president
until 80 years old.
A December 31st birth, just means she'll
be the youngest in a different role,
the Prime Minister.
You're bad with placentas,
but you're good with patients, I guess.
[chuckles]
Good work today. Go get some dinner.
Thanks.
Yes.
Uh-huh.
Right, nothing's open.
There are no rooms available,
so her family's supposed to check in
down here if they wanna see her.
Okay.
[sighs]
She likes quiet.
she likes solitude and stillness.
I'm sorry it's like this in here.
Oh, uh, do you know her?
Yeah, she was my first patient
when I started in Gynecology.
You know, I almost quit once.
She's the only reason I stayed.
Oh.
I should go finish her chart,
but I'll be back in a little bit.
Hello, Miss Yeom.
Your brother's on his way
to see you right now.
The supervising physician is coming too,
and I'm sorry,
but you aren't doing that great.
Uh, would you still like to keep
the DNR order in place?
Okay.
Uh, we're still continuing your Oxycodone.
Uh
Your mouth looks a bit dry.
Would you like me to get some wet gauze?
Uh
Then, um
Um, there's uh
nothing I can do right now.
[chuckles softly]
Uh
[sniffles]
You know,
I turned into a really good doctor.
I get lots of compliments.
["Nearer My God To Thee"
playing on cell phone]
That's all because of you.
INTENSIVE CARE UNI
RESTRICTED
[machine beeps]
Sabi-sabi, why are you here?
Oh, just doing charts
and watching the patient a little.
There's not much going on right now.
Go to the office.
We'll call you when we need you.
-No, I'm fine.
-You should grab something to eat.
I have to write a surgical note,
so I'll hold down the fort.
-It's okay.
-[machine chiming]
[nurse] Doctor,
her vitals are deteriorating.
Doctor, So Won-ju
is showing signs of active bleeding.
Pulse jumped way up to the one-tens,
and her BP is below 60 even with norepi.
We can't do much at this point.
Yeah, all right.
The patient who just came down from OR 10
needs a re-op right away.
Yeah. Okay, we're moving.
-Right.
-Got it.
[groaning, panting]
-Get the camera out of my face!
-[Yi-young] I think you better come now.
Please, Doctor, just one more hour.
Forget it, hurry up! Oh, it really hurts!
[panting]
-We're going to delivery.
-Hold on a minute!
-Can't it wait a little longer?
-Uh, no, I'm sorry.
I live-streamed it was coming
on New Year's.
Just wait another hour.
I can't waste this opportunity.
Listen, it's not a waste. It'll work out.
Trust me, I know all about this.
Really?
The child's ready to come out,
we have a room ready.
Which means this is all perfect timing.
-All right, let's go.
-Oh, please hurry!
-[panting]
-[man] Oh, honey.
Hello there!
[baby crying]
CURRENT TIME
Mom's name, Moon Jin-hui.
Dad's name, Song Ji-hwan.
Congratulations, your baby was born
at 11:02 on December 31st.
All right.
I'm sorry you didn't get to have
your New Year's baby,
but I hope your child brings you
as much joy-
[Jin-hui] Doctor, wait.
Everyone always says
that newborns are ugly
-[crying]
-[chuckles]
so why is she so beautiful?
You're right, she's gorgeous.
Dr. Oh,
it's your last chance this year.
You want to try?
-All right.
-Okay.
-No, sorry, you know what, I misheard you.
-Here you go.
[gentle music plays]
Now put your left hand there and
[Yi-young] And remove the placenta
without breaking the cord.
All right, the placenta is out.
-Time to start the oxytocin, please.
-[nurse] Got it.
Good, that's it.
DELIVERY ROOM
Not quite New Year's.
-She must be a little down.
-Not at all.
She came around. She gets to ring in
the New Year with her child.
She's busy filming with her husband
as we speak.
-Ah.
-Professor, you got what you wished for.
You mentioned you wanted an R1 to finish
up a birth before the year was over.
Oh, that's true.
Thank you both. It was a real pleasure.
And happy new year!
You were so terrible before.
What happened?
What? Oh, I was so
embarrassed that I always seem to
keep messing up.
And just the thought that a
a patient could suffer because of me,
freaked me out.
So I took a look at some videos.
And
I watched the videos over and over,
and I also practiced in the air,
sort of like like this.
[chuckles] Why do you look so scared?
I was complimenting you.
Okay. [chuckles]
Look at you go.
You did so well in there, I mean,
you looked a lot like me when I was an R1.
Oh, really?
Hey, that's a huge accolade, you know?
Ah.
[chuckles] Well, I'm flattered.
[chuckles]
Okay, Yi-young,
there's somewhere I have to go.
-Want to come?
-Where to?
You'll love it.
["Born" by Choi Jung-in playing]
[Jae-il groans]
Nodding off at the desk again?
[gasps] Oh.
That's all you've managed to learn
this year. How to sleep anywhere, huh?
No, I'm sorry.
An employee that's on call
should be working, not conked out.
No, uh, he's not on call tonight.
Why're you up, then?
Well, uh, Hong Sa-ra's been in
a lot of pain, Doctor.
-Yeah, so?
-Uh
It's just that, um, I've been trying
to stay with her and talk with her.
And see if there's anything else
I can do for her.
[phone beeps]
It's Miss Hong. How about that?
She must be in pain.
What? Oh!
It's me. Hello, again.
Hi there. Miss Hong, what do you need?
Oh, I'm sorry, it's not that.
It's so weird.
The pain is totally gone now.
Until today, I couldn't sleep 'cause
when I'd brush up against the bedframe,
I would be in pain.
But tonight, I slept four hours,
and it was so much better.
Are there any signs of recovery there?
Uh
The lab results are the same as they were.
Uh, so, I actually looked up
a few new books earlier,
and in the research, the Pain Control
guidelines were pretty clear.
We tend to treat severe cancer discomfort
with opioids,
but when large doses of those drugs
don't work,
providing adjuvant drug alternatives
is often effective for pain.
So I reviewed some related papers
and I found that
uh
adding diazepam
and a little dexamethasone,
uh, can reduce muscle spasms
and fight inflammation
near the sarcoma as well.
Which does tend to
to offer a little relief.
Um
And it felt like it was time to
to try something other than just chatting
and hanging out with her.
You've been wonderful.
Maybe it's because I slept so well,
but I saw my reflection,
and I don't look as sick as I used to.
My daughter's coming tomorrow.
I get to see her on New Year's Day,
and she'll be able to see me smiling
for once.
I am so grateful, doctor.
Oh, don't mention it.
Suddenly, you go above and beyond
when I don't ask you to?
Oh, yeah, I'm sorry.
I saw one of Sa-bi's books in the office
Finally.
Better late than never.
Crack a book more often.
I will. I'm sorry.
Listen, Jae-il,
I'll send you an Excel data sheet
about ovarian cancer rates.
Collate it for me, please.
[Jae-il] Sure, I can do that.
And if the data pans out,
we'll write the article together.
I'll make you first author.
So don't ruin it.
Yep.
-Good night, Doctor.
-Thanks, have a good night.
Oh, my God! Whoa, Jae-il, that's amazing!
What?
Huh?
No, I'm telling you, Dr. Jo
doesn't compliment anyone, it's true!
That wasn't He didn't do that.
He wants to write an article with you.
Are you kidding? That's huge!
I mean, it's unheard of
for Dr. Jo to ask an R1.
And he came to you!
Whoa. I I don't think this has
ever happened in Yulje's history.
-Oh, is that good, though?
-Duh, of course!
It's like he put a big sign on
your forehead, like a stamp of approval
You're gonna have more on your plate.
Um Jae-il, you nailed it.
You're officially in.
[clicks tongue] Poof, just like that,
you're not an idiot.
You know,
I thought I'd be an idiot forever.
But watching the interns
made me realize I'm actually okay.
[chuckles] You're not kidding.
Uh, who was it?
I don't know, there was this guy, though,
he thought there was a patient
with a skull fracture
when she had a runny nose.
And then he was all like, "Doctor, uh,
I think this might actually be
an aortic dissection!"
He was completely serious. He called
the attending physician. [chuckling]
Uh, that was back in March, I think.
Which intern was it?
That
was me.
I diagnosed that patient. [chuckles]
[both laughing]
-Oh, that was hilarious, Jae-il!
-[both laughing]
Oh, Dr. Seo asked me to bring her
something. Almost forgot.
-Be back later, okay?
-Pretty sure she's gone already.
["Amateur" by Mido and Falasol playing]
[sighs]
Weren't you holding onto that
for a rare occasion?
Mm-hmm, and we got one today.
-Did you win an award?
-I didn't.
You got a raise? Or did you
[gasps]
-You're turning 40?
-Uh, no.
So what is it?
Thought I was pretty clear. I got
what I want. You're good at your job now.
Yesterday, you sutured the uterus,
and today,
you took the placenta out, cord and all.
It's easy to see you have a nice touch.
Even with shortcomings, everyone winds up
at roughly the same level eventually.
Manual skills improve with repetition.
But to look up a procedure
and practice it,
just to make sure you know the patient
is in good hands with you,
that was surprising.
Especially considering
you've always been desperate to quit.
So, I'd say it's time to open this bottle.
It really wasn't all that great, Doctor.
It would be nice to have a little sip,
though. Let's drink it!
You mean right now?
Hey, this is a hospital.
We're not drinking it now.
Oh, why are we here then?
Take it. It's a present.
-It's a perfect night for a drink.
-Oh, I can't accept that.
-Let's have a drink some other time.
-I want you to take it, so take it.
Are you sure?
I'm honored. Thank you so much.
[cell phone ringing]
Hello.
Oh, really? All right, sounds good.
That was quick.
Nam Seol-i is fully dilated.
Already?
She's pushing as we speak.
I better head out. See ya later.
Hey, crack that open and let loose,
all right?
[door opens]
[door closes]
-[door opens]
-Wait, Doctor!
I'll drink another night.
I said you can leave.
You're not on call tonight.
Yeah, I know. It's just,
as her attending, I wanna see her child.
[cell phone ringing]
Yes, Doctor.
Of course, I'm on my way.
Transfer the patient, please!
[Seol-i groaning, panting]
[Jung-min] Okay, here we go,
I want you to push.
-Push!
-[Seol-i screams]
[gasping]
Good job, you're almost there.
Just one last push,
and you'll be able to meet your baby.
Dr. Oh, the baby's coming.
You'll deliver.
[Yi-young] What? Oh, no.
Doctor, hurry up. It'll be just like
the pottery wheel scene in Ghost.
-[Jung-min] Let's go!
-Okay.
All right, Miss Nam, just give us
one more big push now, please.
[strains]
[Jung-min] That's good.
Now lower the head slightly
so we can get the anterior shoulder out.
-There.
-[Yi-young] The shoulder's out.
Support the neck with one hand,
now slide your other hand down.
Yep, down toward the buttocks.
[baby crying]
Uh uh, the baby is out.
[panting] Oh, sweetheart.
You did it, honey.
-[crying]
-Oh, honey.
[man] You did great.
I'm so proud of you.
[Seol-i] How's the baby?
[man] Doing fine, the baby's great.
[Yi-young] Hello there.
[chuckles] Good job.
I'll take over. Sound good?
Congratulations, Miss Nam!
The baby is healthy.
We'll bring her over soon.
-[crying] Oh, my God, I'm so glad.
-Thank you so much.
[Seol-i] Thank you so much.
[man] You did a great job.
Great job, honey.
-Here's your baby.
-Hi, honey.
I'm your mother.
-I'm happy you came into the world.
-We both are.
[crying]
[gasps]
Mother's name, Nam Seol-i.
And the father's name, Do Se-ho.
Your baby was born January 1st, 2024
at exactly midnight. Congratulations.
Really?
Hey, congratulations!
[laughs] Right on New Year's!
-[nurse] Congratulations.
-[Yi-young] That's incredible.
-[laughs]
-[baby crying]
ANESTHESIA TIME, CURRENT TIME
SURGERY TIME
[instrument hissing]
So, how's it going?
[beeping steadily]
Everything's fine.
I'm tapering off the norepi,
and her vitals are still stable.
[both sigh]
-Seems like we've got it in hand.
-Yep, there's no bleeding either, Doctor.
Oh, I was terrified that something
was gonna go wrong.
-Okay, now we can finally
-Close up her stomach for good.
-[Jae-hui] Can I get a 1-0, please?
-[nurse] Yes, Doctor.
Oh, everyone,
I wish you all
a happy New Year.
Oh! Look, it's past midnight.
Hey, Happy New Year!
-Happy New Year, everyone!
-Happy New Year, guys.
Happy New Year.
Thanks. You too, Dr. Kim.
Right!
When she wakes up, let's say to her,
"My God, it's been so long,
we almost didn't recognize you."
"We met last year, remember?"
[chuckles]
"Oh! Whoa, wow! I can't believe it!
You're suddenly so much healthier."
Or not.
[laughs]
[all laughing awkwardly]
It's funny, right, Sa-bi?
It's okay. Don't pretend.
I know it wasn't funny.
[Eun-mi laughs]
But the thing is,
dumb little jokes like that,
they loosen the patient up,
and get them laughing.
It brightens their day.
That, in turn, speeds up their recovery.
[man sniffles] Mi-so,
say hi to Mom for us, all right?
I hope we meet again.
And then
[sniffles] I'll never have to
leave you behind. [crying]
[monitor beeps, flatlines]
January 1st, 2024.
Time of death, 12:15.
Miss Yeom has passed, I'm sorry.
[sobbing] Mi-so.
Mi-so! [sobbing]
SYSTEM IS SHUTTING DOWN
[melancholy music playing]
[sobbing]
[man] Sorry, excuse me, Doctor.
My sister,
did she suffer in the end?
I was hoping she didn't.
Please tell me her death
was painless and quick.
She was in pain quite often,
so we had her on a cocktail of drugs.
So I'm sure the
the pain subsided in the end. Don't worry.
[exhales]
[sniffles, sighs]
So she was all alone here, wasn't she?
She was so lonely all her life. [sniffles]
And I left her here.
She was by herself in the end.
No, sir.
I spent a little time with your sister.
I tried to speak to her.
I held her hand.
[cries]
There's a hymn she liked,
so I let her listen to it.
I believe the music helped.
She seemed at peace in the end.
Thank you so much.
Thank you so much. [sniffles]
[sniffles]
DEATH CERTIFICATE
CAUSE OF DEATH
[sobbing]
[nurse] I need an OB/GYN doctor here!
[Gi-on] Okay, ma'am,
take deep breaths for me.
Nice and slow, nice and slow.
What's going on?
Uh, she was just at home
and her water broke.
She came straight over here
from the parking lot.
Oh, how far along? Is this her first?
-Uh, I don't I don't know.
-[woman] Thirty-five weeks.
And it's it's my second one.
[breathing heavily]
My due date still isn't for a while.
Oh!
Oh! [gasps]
I I can see the baby's head coming out.
Wait, she's gonna have to give birth here.
Oh, please tell delivery.
Get the on-call supervisor!
-You got it.
-[woman groaning]
[Nam-kyung] Bring me a delivery set.
You're OB/GYN?
Yes.
-Right. Sorry, husbands have to wait out
-Honey, honey!
Are the baby and my wife going to be okay?
What's happening?
-The child's coming.
-Hey, it's okay.
[man] Oh, honey,
everything's going to be okay.
[woman whimpering, panting]
It hurts so bad.
I'm pretty sure there's no chance
of the child falling here.
Just stay calm and catch it.
Okay. Wait.
Are you a
[gasping]
Don't worry, I'll be right here, honey.
All right, deeper breaths, please.
Take deep breaths.
Okay.
Take a breath in, a nice deep breath,
and then push at the same time.
Push! Okay, good. Great job.
Now, let's do that once more, all right?
One more deep breath, please. Good.
-[breathing heavily]
-You're doing great.
Now, I want you to push, go ahead. Push!
-Great!
-[whimpering]
All right, the baby's on its way out.
Now, for the final push!
Oh, okay.
-[sniffles]
-[doctor] All right, ma'am.
One last time, I want you to take
a big deep breath and push.
Ready? Just one more deep breath,
then push. Here we go.
Now, one more push, that's it!
[grunts]
Ma'am, I need you to hold a bit longer
when you push.
Just breathe in again, and push out.
Okay, push now!
One, two, three, push!
[sighs]
["Superstar" by Mido and Falasol playing]
Time, 12:24, January 1st. Sex, male.
[exhales]
-Congrats, ma'am. You did great.
-[baby crying]
It's a good thing he's crying.
[crying]
-Oh, it's okay, it's okay.
-[Eun-won] What happened here?
[Moo-kang] Mm-hmm.
Oh, she's a multipara.
Her water broke early.
She came in crowning.
She almost didn't make it.
She looks okay.
Let's move upstairs to finish. [sighs]
You did great tonight.
[sighs]
[sighs]
Oh.
Huh? Where'd he go?
-[baby crying]
-[Moo-kang] Doctor, the baby's fine.
[Eun-won] All right.
["Nearer My God To Thee" playing]
[Jae-hui] Hey, are you okay?
Mm!
Oh! Oh, Miss So! Can you hear me okay?
Are you all right?
Yes.
What about you?
How you holding up?
Huh?
Oh. Good.
Oh, uh
Yeah, I've had my eye on her. Her urine
output's good and her vitals are stable,
so I've been tapering off her norepi.
Miss So, I checked your lab results.
They look pretty good.
All you need to do now is focus on
recovering from your surgery, ma'am.
And, also
Uh
Ah!
We had some tricky things
to navigate in surgery.
The bleeding was difficult to control,
there were
You know what?
I can tell you a bit later in more detail.
Wait. That's not all.
Ah, so, you'll be moved to the ward
as soon as your bed is ready.
I'll explain everything else
once you're there.
-[Jae-hui] Sound good?
-Hang on, guys, I still have more to say.
I know it's been a long time.
But you look so much better
than you did last year.
Gosh!
Oh, wow!
And, uh,
since then, your health
has really improved a lot.
[chuckles weakly]
It's January
1st, right?
The professor said getting you to laugh
might speed up recovery.
Get well soon.
Thanks for taking care of me
for two years.
It must've been a tough job.
Hope you have a happy New Year!
Happy New Year, Miss So.
Hope you have a happy New Year!
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
OB-GYN
1ST-YEAR RESIDENT LOUNGE
Hey.
You awake?
Rise and shine!
Oh, oh.
You just get in?
Did you guys sleep here last night?
[yawns] Couldn't make it out the door.
Oh, I'm so hungry.
Me too.
I could eat a whole elephant.
Mm, it's actually good.
Except the rice cakes are bloated.
Aren't they a sign of abundance
in the New Year?
-I thought that was only in the Fall.
-No, abundance is always good.
Abundant wealth, abundant pleasure,
abundant work too. Wait, not that.
On that note,
I checked out the horoscope for the year.
[sighs] It's gonna be very dry apparently,
except for a deluge of work.
Sounds like R2, right?
You know what Eun-mi said? We should
expect to be twice as busy as we are now.
Ugh, I'll never make it.
I don't want to. Why should I?
-[groans] Here we go.
-Watch, she'll stick it out the longest.
At this point, it's mostly hot air.
So I've been meaning to tell you guys
I'm not doing the second year.
I think I'll quit sometime after February.
-Hey, we have any kimchi?
-Mm-mm, kimchi's all gone.
This is better by itself.
Hey, I'm serious.
[scoffs] I wasn't gonna say this,
but I got a lottery ticket.
So, I won the jackpot.
[chuckles]
I don't need to have a job anymore.
Liar.
Uh-uh.
You're kidding me.
[chuckles]
Okay, I'll prove it.
Look.
You've probably never seen this.
Ta-da!
This will pay off my debt.
I won't have to work
as a resident anymore.
I mean, I'll probably just kick back
and then, find a new job somewhere else.
No rush.
Oh, no. [tuts]
[chuckling]
Oh, boy.
What?
This can't be right.
THE CLAIM PERIOD HAS EXPIRED
[sighs]
Please no.
Oh, God!
[whimpering dramatically]
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
What's everybody taking?
-A taxi.
-The bus.
-Me too.
-Taking the bus.
[gasps] Oh, wait a minute? Oh!
Ugh, why is nothing going my way?
Sorry, bye, guys!
Where's she going?
On a date, obviously.
Oh.
[groaning] Ow, God! Ow! Ow.
What? What's the matter?
The envy's killing me. I'm so jealous.
[sighs]
Good one. See you later.
Goodbye.
-Happy New Year.
-You too.
Let's go. Mm.
Mm.
[Jae-il] Wow, it's snowing.
Fresh snow on January 1st.
[chuckles]
Oh, Jo Joon-Mo asked me to write
an article about ovarian cancer.
So that would mean that the first-ever R1
to get Professor Jo's blessing
would be this guy here.
Professor Jae-Hui did a paper
on ovarian cancer that might be
a really good reference for organizing
the trial groups you want.
[Jae-il] Cool. Thanks.
You remember every article you read.
How do you do it?
File them based on value
and chronological order.
I also never move on to a new page
or chapter till my questions are resolved.
That's the core tenet.
[chuckles]
Your "core tenets." God, you're so cute.
Look, I I think you know I'm, um
well, the kind of person who has to
satisfy their curiosity, so
Are you catching feelings?
I didn't want to assume,
so I analyzed the evidence.
Number one, karaoke bar.
Number two was the churros.
And then number three,
the wheelchair thing.
'Cause you pretended you were in pain
when you weren't.
All right.
You're being so thorough.
You don't have to study me.
Besides, what's there to be
so curious about, huh?
Of course I
have a crush.
I'll admit it, it's true.
Hypothesis confirmed.
I
like you a lot.
And you?
-If you have feelings for me too
-I don't.
I do think of you, once in a while.
I even miss you sometimes, it's just that
I don't think I can go out with you yet.
One of my core tenets
is to get to know someone
through a full year before we date.
I mean, I'm not proposing here.
Core tenets don't matter right now.
Yeah, they do.
Hey, we only just met last March,
so I think
we need to get better acquainted first.
You know me already, though.
I'm not complex, Sa-bi.
And I really like you, so come on.
[Sa-bi] Would you stop saying that?
[Jae-il] Hey, Kim Sa-bi,
I really, really like you.
-[Sa-bi] I said stop it!
-I'm into you, Sa-bi!
[Sa-bi] Knock it off.
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
TAXI
Are you heading out?
Yeah.
Mm.
-Are you okay?
-Huh?
Oh.
Yeah.
Thanks for your help today.
Yeah.
Uh, Doctor.
I chose a concentration, you know?
Oh, yeah?
Don't you want to know which one?
OB/GYN.
I'll be working with you.
you will?
You're not joking?
Don't go back on your word.
I won't let you change it, okay?
[chuckles] Okay.
You won't regret this, trust me.
You chose the right specialty.
And I'll I'll go easy on you.
Okay.
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
-I hope we work well together.
-Oh.
Me too.
[chuckles]
Mm?
[cell phone buzzing]
[buzzing stops]
[exhales]
Oh, I'm so sorry.
I've been all over the place today.
Oh! Oh, uh
Huh?
How did you know where I was?
You didn't pick up
and you weren't in your office,
so I thought you'd be here.
It's still January 1st.
It's 11:40. Twenty minutes left.
Happy New Year!
Um
Yeah, Happy New Year, yeah.
What a day.
There were so many unexpected births.
Every time I turned around,
someone was in labor.
I almost paid off my debt,
then it turned out I didn't win
'cause the date was expired.
Today's just been really
I wasn't gonna give it to you like this.
I was really hoping to surprise you.
Well, what is it?
Oh, this. I thought you deserved a reward
for getting through R1.
Plus, I hope you'll stay the course
in R2 and keep going.
Right. I appreciate that.
Thank you, doctor.
Hey, your seat, is it okay?
What'd you mean?
Uh, under underneath.
I'm sorry that this moment
isn't more special.
You mind?
["Forever" by D.O. playing]
So, what's this?
Why do I deserve this ring?
'Cause I love you.
[chuckles]

JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
JONGNO YULJE MEDICAL CENTER
[announcer] We now invite today's guest
for his retirement speech.
Im Dong-ju,
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
[cheering]
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR RETIREMEN
PROFESSOR IM DONG-JU, OB-GYN
It's been 40 years since I began here.
A doctor in OB/GYN.
I've exchanged countless greetings
with patients over the years,
and in honoring the Hippocratic Oath,
we must also accept that
where there is life, there is death.
But the farewell
I must say to all of you today
is the most difficult moment
of my long career.
[chuckles] You know,
it's not easy to admit this,
but when I began, it took me longer
than most to find my way.
[chuckles]
I wasn't a promising student.
I felt very insecure for awhile.
And I spent so much time
with my nose in a book,
that I never learned
how to become a better doctor.
Despite those shortcomings,
I've been lucky enough
to make it all the way to retirement.
But that would never have happened
without all the wonderful people
I've met here at Yulje.
With your dedication and support,
all of you have allowed me to maintain
my faith and trust in this profession,
through every moment of despair
[Jung-min] I wanted to choose someone
who could inspire
faith and trust in any situation.
Someone that could inspire all of us.
So I asked all the nurses and residents
since they work with the entire
medical staff, to submit their thoughts,
because they have more insight
into the candidates
compared to those of us
sitting behind a desk.
I must say, it was incredibly helpful.
Taking all that into consideration,
I'd like to appoint a doctor
with the utmost integrity
and a forthright approach,
someone who holds process above outcomes,
a person we can all rely on.
So I've decided
that our new professor will be
this young woman right here.
Yes, hello, Professor.
I really appreciate you giving me
the news in advance.
Oh, no, I'm fine. Don't worry about that.
Thank you, Professor.
All right.
[screams]
[breathes heavily, screams]
[sobbing]
[Dong-ju] Many patients
have also served as great teachers,
as I've tried to improve as a doctor,
and more importantly, as a human being.
In particular, I have to thank those
who gave me the courage to fail boldly,
the humility to learn, and the insight
to know when it's time to let go.
Those are the reasons I've been able to
grow and flourish as a person.
Well, your blood test indicates
a level below point two for HCG.
Ah.
You're not pregnant.
Not this round.
Uh, Doctor, do you think, uh,
would a a second blood panel be
a good idea?
I don't think that will help, I'm sorry.
[Seung-won] Oh, I understand.
You should take a break for a few months,
and focus on boosting your health
so that you're in good head space
moving forward.
And when you're ready,
we can start over from step one.
We've had some people go through ten
rounds before their IVF finally worked.
I know that.
I truly admire the kind of courage
they all have.
[doctor] Mm.
I just don't think
I have one more round in me, Doctor.
[inhales, sighs]
So
I'm going to stop here.
Right.
["Breath" by MINNIE playing]
All right, it's time to stop, then.
I'm sure if we were already parents,
we'd be happy to stop.
How great it must be to say,
"Aw, I think I was born
to be a mother to this little child."
I know everyone thinks you need kids
to feel complete,
and without them, our lives
are hardly even worth living
Well, I'm gonna prove everyone wrong.
'Cause if this is what they call
an incomplete life,
I'd say it can be pretty darn good.
I'll have to look within myself
to discover the joy that a child
would've brought us.
In the next stage of my life,
I won't worry anymore.
I will be kind to myself.
I can live happily again.
[breathes heavily]
Thank you so much for everything.
Of course. I wish you the best.
[chuckles]
[Seung-won sniffles]
[Dong-ju] Thanks to everyone,
I can leave this profession behind
without any regrets or misgivings.
For that, I am grateful.
Thank you.
Thank you for everything.
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR RETIREMEN
Thank you. Thank you all.
This is very kind.
-Thank you.
-[crowd cheering]
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR RETIREMEN
PROFESSOR IM DONG-JU, OB-GYN
[crying]
[indistinct chatter]
I've been seeing you a lot.
Mm. Funerals, retirements,
it's been pretty hectic.
Gosh, it's crazy how time flies, huh?
Our revered professor
is hanging up his white coat.
I know.
Feels like yesterday,
he was teaching our med school classes.
Hey, remember when we had to play
new mothers in labor?
Not everyone took to the exercise
very well.
[chuckles] Oh, yeah.
Lee Ik-jun screamed so loud,
he got vocal nodules.
-[both laughing]
-Put on a quite a show.
No, I mean it, I'm so jealous.
Seriously, I'm jealous.
-Hello, Professor.
-How are you?
-[Sa-bi] Morning.
-[Jae-il] Hello.
Oh. It's our intrepid R1s!
This is Professor Yang Seok-hyeong
from the main branch.
-Oh. Good morning, sir.
-Nice to meet you.
[laughs]
Go get yourselves some breakfast.
Make sure you're ready for rounds.
-Right.
-Will do.
-[Sa-bi] You sound like you hate it.
-[Jae-il] No, I said I don't hate it.
I am jealous! Seriously, guys.
-Those are your R1s?
-Mm-hmm.
Adorable, right? Skilled as well.
What a nice cohort.
Competent, capable, good judgement,
and strong nerves.
Mm. And how would you know?
Uh, you know me,
I can just tell by looking.
-Are you telling me you're clairvoyant?
-It's clear as day you taught them all.
You were always an excellent teacher.
If you weren't in that study group,
I would've flunked out.
That was several lifetimes ago.
Although, I got to say,
I'm really awesome.
I'm great at teaching,
so you're not wrong.
No, I know you are.
And that's why I'm trusting you
with one of my best people.
[knock on door]
Oh, uh, I just wanted to say hi.
[chuckles] Ah, there she is!
[chuckles] Good to see you
outside a conference.
Yes, likewise, Doctor.
It's so wonderful to see you again.
-Yes, you too.
-[chuckles]
The thing is,
I feel a bit nervous
to put my complete trust in you.
Oh? Why is that?
Everyone I ask tells me
you're such a spectacular person,
and I find that hard to comprehend.
I see. Well, just know, I have been known
to pick up the check once in a while.
I've also heard something else,
that you're overly modest too!
[both laughs]
Uh, Doctor Ah! Sorry.
Um, Professor, it's been too long.
Congrats on your new position!
[scoffs] Hey, don't make this awkward.
-Just try to act normal, Do-won.
-I can't do that!
You're a professor now,
gotta suck up to you.
[scoffs]
I'm really lucky to have someone like you
on my side,
especially from the get-go, mm?
All humor aside, I look forward
to working with you. [chuckles]
Oh, and this is Dr. Myeong Eun-won.
Oh, right, you worked at
the main office together.
Uh, we did.
Yes, it's been a while, Dr. Myeong.
Uh, I hope I'll be able
to rely on you here.
Great.
I hope you will feel at home here
Professor.
Oh, thanks. [chuckles] Thank you so much.
[knock on door]
[grunts]
Congrats, Professor Chu Chu!
I asked for a bouquet prettier than you,
but the florist said that doesn't exist!
[comical music playing]
[sighs]
I thought you were alone. [sighs]
Uh, sorry.
[door closes]
That was my husband. [chuckles] He must've
thought we were finished in here.
He's always had a big heart.
That's how he is, you know?
[both laugh]
Anyway, thank you all
for the warm welcome today.
I'll do my very best to be worthy
of you all.
We will too! [chuckles]
Welcome! Congrats!
Congratulations!
[chuckling]
-[Yi-young] See you later!
-[Do-won] Bye!
[Joo-young] I genuinely didn't think
she'd last a year.
I know.
I was wondering,
do you think she finds joy
in her work yet?
I hoped she would've found
a sense of purpose.
-Honestly, I doubt it.
-You think?
-Sixteen million left in debt?
-Mm-hmm.
Well, let's hope she never manages
to pay it off.
What if we increased her rent this year?
Oh, what are they doing?
Are the two of them holding hands?
-Holding hands?
-[gasps]
-The fist fight!
-Oh, you're right. Oh!
-Guess they finally made up!
-[sighs in relief]
[Joo-young] Gosh.
They were being so stubborn, you'd think
they'd never talk to each other again.
-Not the case.
-I know. [chuckles]
-Aw, look.
-[both chuckle]

Oh. Is that new? It must be.
-I've had it for a while.

-[Jae-il] Here.
[Sa-bi] It's blue.
-Here.

-Yep!
-And make it spicy. With rice balls.
-[Nam-kyung] That goes without saying.
Yes! Yi-young, you're in, right?
It's crazy. You all still act the same.
You guys haven't changed.
-I hope you never do.
-[chuckles]
