The Girl Who Made the Stars

1 Star Trek: Discovery SOOEO9 - Short Treks: The Girl Who Made the Stars Dad! Michael! Michael, I'm here.
It's okay, it's okay.
What, what? What is it? It was so scary.
It was so scary.
The shadow again, huh? Computer, aluminum.
I mean, Lu Illuminate? That's what I said.
Make it brighter.
Computer, illuminate.
Sometimes I just feel like it's you, me and Mommy out here in the middle of all this nothing, and it's gonna eat us.
And nobody would ever know.
[SIGHS.]
I hate being scared.
I know.
But I wonder if you hate the idea of being scared more than you probably are scared.
Am I right? Dad, I'm too little to know what that means.
Can I just sleep with all the lights on? Sure, you could do that.
But what if I told you that a girl about your age with one single tiny light changed the entire universe? Nuh-uh.
Forever.
Nuh-uh! You want to hear the story of the girl who made the stars? - Yes.
- 1,000 centuries ago in Africa the first people celebrated the Sun.
Back then there were no stars in the night sky, so when the dark came, it made them afraid.
They gave their fear a name: the night beast.
Village law said no first person was allowed to travel at night.
Now, the first people were hunter-gatherers just beginning to farm.
And farming the same land over and over again Well, everybody got together and just freaked out.
What are we going to do? Oh, my.
We'll have no land left to farm.
MIKE: But one girl said to the elders We can go past the far mountain.
We can find new land.
MIKE: But the elder said That journey would take longer than a day.
Longer than two days, and that would anger the night beast.
MIKE: And then he said to her [SCOFFS.]
Girl, go play.
"Go play"? Are you kidding me? This is what I'm trying to say.
- But that's just rude.
- Ah, ah.
Can I finish, please? - Mm.
- So, the girl set out on her own to save her village, and she was joined by a friend.
But the darkness found her.
[HISSING.]
And there was only one thing to do.
Run.
[SCREAMS.]
Whatever was coming, she didn't want to see.
So she hid her face in her hands and waited for the end to come.
And then out of the darkness came a light.
So she followed it.
Even though she was scared, she kept going toward that light.
And there she found the most incredible thing.
A being unlike anything she'd ever seen.
First, she thought it was the night beast.
But when she actually really looked it in the eye, she wasn't scared.
She was curious.
And when the being saw her, it didn't see a little girl full of fear.
It saw a brave warrior whose light shined brighter than she could ever imagine.
Brighter even than the whole galaxy.
It showed her that outside of her valley, there was a whole universe just waiting to be explored.
But the first step was conquering fear.
But how can I tell everyone that they don't have to be afraid? MIKE: "You must show them," the being said.
And it gave the girl a gift.
With its ship fixed, the being disappeared into the night.
When she came back home, the elder was waiting to scold her.
You could have been eaten or worse.
And you've angered the darkness, worst of all.
No.
I brought us to light.
MIKE: And the girl brought the stars to the first people.
She lifted them because she was brave.
And they were never scared of the night again.
She was a great explorer, navigating by the constellations.
The people came to follow her, and the girl became a queen.
It was the light inside that guided her.
Exactly.
And when she realized that, she knew there was nothing to be afraid of.
Dad, I don't think I need the night-light anymore.
Good night, my queen.
I love you, Daddy.
I love you, too.
Night night.
[ULULATING.]
