The A-Team (1983) s04e19 Episode Script

Beneath The Surface

1 (male narrator) In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they didn't commit.
These men promptly escaped from a maximum-security stockade to the Los Angeles underground.
Today, still wanted by the government they survive as soldiers of fortune.
If you have a problem, if no one else can help and if you can find them maybe you can hire the A-Team.
[gun firing.]
[whistle blowing.]
Any luck, Barry? Hey, Mr.
Maitland, what are you still doing here? I thought I'd wait around and see what our prize oceanographer's dug up.
Great news.
I've got a piece of the hull for those tests.
With any luck, I think we can confirm.
Well, that should be some exhibit.
You think we'll be able to keep it, don't you? I mean, the Smithsonian is not gonna come in and haul it out-- No,no,no.
It belongs in California.
Now, you let me worry about that.
Yes, sir.
Have a good evening, Barry.
You, too, Mr.
Maitland.
[birds chirping.]
[gasping.]
[speaking in Scottish accent.]
What did you find, Barry? [stammering.]
What're you guys doing here? You've been taking a boat out every day for a week.
You found something out there.
Just routine dives.
I don't think so, me young friend.
Now, we're gonna know what you found, one way or another.
Now you was gonna answer the question.
(Murdock) I've got to have this thing back in three hours, Face or Dr.
Richter's gonna be very upset when he finds out that I borrowed his limo.
It's gonna set the trust aspect of our therapy back three years not to mention the fact that he's gonna strangle me.
Would you relax, Murdock, you have nothing to worry about, okay? Besides, you are getting the better end of this little deal.
Oh, you think so? Trading two plane tickets to Cabo for a night in Richter's limo just so you can impress a bunch of people you haven't seen in 20 years! I'm not trying to impress a bunch of people I haven't seen in 20 years, for crying out loud.
I have only one purpose in coming today Rebecca Piper.
Of course, she hardly gave me the time a day back then.
Called me a minor league hustler.
What, you? Yeah.
You can't imagine how many times I asked her to go for a walk by the garden pond.
That was the go signal back then go for a walk by the garden pond.
Well, what makes you think that her standards have plunged after all these years? Just don't forget what to do, okay? Give me 20 minutes to circulate lay down the back-story of my stunning career and home in on Rebecca Piper.
Then“ Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[imitating foreign accent.]
Just try not to spill any champagne back there Mr.
Bond.
You're not gonna park it here, are you? I don't want this car parked next to any another vehicle.
I don't even want the exhaust from another vehicle to touch this car.
And you, I want you to stay right where you are.
I will let you out.
Murdock, you sure you don't wanna put a fence up around the car? No.
Three hours, Faceman.
Three hours.
No problem.
And what do you think is the most direct route from here to the airport? [people chattering.]
Hello.
Hello.
Yes, Peck, Templeton Peck.
Templeton.
Debra.
Oh, my gosh.
Debra Garrity? My You look [chuckles.]
You look great.
Still the same, Templeton? Chasing all the girls? Have you seen Rebecca Piper here? Yes.
As a matter of fact, she was asking about you, Templeton.
Really? Was she alone? I mean, she wasn't dragging a husband around with her, was she? I don't think so.
Why? Come on, Debra, you remember me.
I remember you used to like to take a walk by the garden pond.
N'[music playing on stereo.]
Oh, I forgot.
Barry Green sent you this letter.
I guess he won't be here today.
Well, I'm very sorry, I was looking forward to seeing him.
You wanted to sell him Bobby Moore's bicycle again? I could explain that.
Well, if you'll excuse me, I It's been nice seeing you.
(Face) Rebecca.
Rebecca Piper.
Templeton Peck.
We sure have grown up, haven't we? Yes, indeed.
Yes.
Haven't we? I remember you used to always wanna take me for a walk by the garden pond.
Yeah, still do.
You should never stop asking.
Excuse me, Templeton Peck? Me? Oh, no, I'm Teddy Pendleton.
I Oh, this? I must have picked up the wrong nametag.
Don't let the uniform scare you.
I'm just a meter maid.
I'm Barry Green's sister.
Barry Green doesn't have a sister.
When he was 16, my family adopted him.
Oh, well, that's great-- Listen, I came today hoping you'd be here.
I haven't heard from Barry in two weeks.
Well, I haven't heard from Barry in 20 years.
I know he's been working a lot lately but it's just not like him to disappear.
I see.
Well Look, he left this letter for me at the desk there.
See, so he's probably just out of town or something.
Well, could you open it? Maybe it says where he's gone.
If you will excuse me, I'll be back in just a minute, okay? Well.
Peck.
Templeton Peck.
Good seeing you, Lester.
How you been? I'm great.
Great.
I was just telling Rebecca here how I've been test flying F-16's for Lockheed.
You know, kind of putting them through their paces make sure they're safe for our boys in uniform and all that.
Hey, I had to bail out of one just last week.
Really? Well, I've been doing a lot of work myself at Cape Canaveral.
Well, didn't I read something about you in Vietnam? Oh, yeah, yeah.
Intelligence work.
I'll tell you all about it, later.
No, no, this was some kind of trouble.
Aren't you-- All this talk about careers is so boring.
I mean, we all go through changes, but the end results are so obvious.
Yeah.
(Rebecca) Come on, the pond is waiting.
[people chattering.]
It's so good to see you after all these years.
Yes, well, you took the words right out of my mouth.
[birds chirping.]
You know what this means to me you coming here today and all? Tell me.
It means $10,000.
[blowing whistle.]
Ten“ [guns cocking.]
Nothing like a reunion to bring old friends together, huh, Peck? Yeah, I'm sorry we haven't stayed in touch, General, but Come on.
Party's over.
Yeah, yeah.
Look, I understand, Rebecca, they made you do this.
I understand.
Up the stairs.
Temp, I think Barry's in real trouble.
Join the club.
Get out of the way, lady.
[women screaming.]
[machine gun firing.]
Got a light, General? [guns firing.]
[We've Got to Get Out of This Place playing.]
No, not behind the limo! [tires screeching.]
(Hannibal) Come on, Captain.
I can't leave this car! Forget the car! Go! Come on! [police siren wailing.]
[horn honking.]
Let's go! (Murdock) Rich is gonna be here in 24 hours.
I've got to get that limo bonded.
I've got to get the tires fixed! I've got to get it back from the army! What is the matter with you two? Showing up at a place like that.
I didn't tell him, Face, I didn't.
He made me do it, Hannibal.
I warned you about going.
And you give me this song and dance about not caring anything about reunions.
Fulbright probably subscribes to your alumni newsletter, Lieutenant.
I can't believe that Fulbright would sink that low.
That he would find an unrequited love, from my youth and force her to set me up.
That's.
She's after the reward, Face.
Boy, Hannibal, you are so cynical.
I can't believe this.
I mean she You should've seen the tears in her eyes as Fulbright led me away.
(Face) She wanted to warn me.
[laughs.]
She'd be in trouble with the government-- (Murdock) Trouble? I'll give you trouble.
I lost Richter's limo [stuttering.]
and then I get ticketed by some meter maid.
Now, who tickets in front of an orphanage? Elaine.
Oh, you know this meter maid by name, huh? Yeah.
Well, good, you can fix the ticket! Well, she's Barry's sister.
Now Barry's in trouble, and, well, she needs our help, Hannibal.
She's a cop, Face.
(Face) She's a meter maid.
Look, I really think we should help her.
Sounded like Barry was in a lot of trouble.
[stammering.]
Besides, maybe she could fix this.
Look, we'll find the limo, we'll repair it.
Richter will never know the difference.
Hannibal, can you think of something? Well, maybe we can kill two birds with one stone.
We'll give it a try.
[screaming.]
[van tires screeching.]
[screaming.]
[gun firing.]
[tires screeching.]
Thank goodness you guys got here.
You wanna tell us what's going on? Sure.
You can't park here.
It's illegal to park within 30 feet of a corner.
[birds chirping.]
(Elaine) They took the envelope that Barry left for you at the reunion.
(Face) Well, what was on it? A note.
Something like "A lot of people are after this.
"I'm sure you'll recognize it and know what to do.
" Me? Why would I recognize it? I don't know.
Well, there was an old map, too.
An old map? Yeah, like something out of an Errol Flynn movie.
No, it couldn't be.
It was 20 years ago.
Could you draw us this map? Yeah, I think so.
Wait a second.
Wait a second.
Wait.
Wait a minute.
Did it curve around at the bottom, here, like this? Yeah.
Yeah.
And then up here this part looked like the boot of Italy turned around backwards? I think it needs to be colored in over here.
Get out of here, would you? And then, there was a little square right over here, like that, right? That's it, that's it! You saw it? What is it, Face? It's a treasure map.
A treasure map? This is a map to Long John Silver's treasure.
[imitating pirate's speech.]
Well, shiver me timbers he's discovered the map to the sunken treasure.
Well, it's not the real map, see, I drew it.
You traced it, actually.
From Treasure Island, Scribner's Edition, 1951, I believe.
It had a parrot on the cover.
It just so happens it was Rand McNally, 1916 but you're right about the parrot.
Yes, but you happen to be mistaken.
Look, I'm the one who traced it.
(Hannibal) And gave it to your friend, Barry.
(Face) No.
Well, I sold it to him.
We were kids.
(Elaine) I can't believe it.
He always told me you were his friend.
I was his friend.
lam his friend.
You don't sell a map like that to just anybody.
(Hannibal) How many times did you con this guy, Face? I bet he was your number one stooge.
(Elaine) He talked about you constantly.
Always told me what a great guy you were.
I am a great guy.
Barry was interested in pirates, and for $20, I sold him a treasure map.
I'm glad I didn't know you when I was a kid.
[chuckling.]
No, wait.
You can't do that! Oh, no? I can't believe it.
We come to help you, and what do you do? You fingered my limo right outside a place of worship! I'm sorry.
I didn't know it was your car, but it was illegally parked.
Yeah, well, maybe now you'll think of retrieving my vehicle from the Army Tow Corp.
Look, could we stick to one problem at a time here? Why would those guys want a phony pirate map that Face gave Barry 20 years ago? [mumbling.]
[imitating pirate.]
(Morgan) You're gonna show us how to read this thing! You gotta take us to the treasure! There is no treasure! That thing is worthless! I'm getting tired of hearing that tune, laddie.
Too bad.
This is where the sharks come to feed, you know? What do you say we chum up the waters, hey, boys? [gasps.]
Wouldn't you rather come up here and talk to us on the boat? All right! All right! Pull me up! Sounds like he's changed his mind.
Shall we pull him in, Captain? Pull me up! Morgan, shall we haul him up? Hurry up! Hurry up! Pull me up! All right, pull him up.
Hurry up! Hurry up! Pull me up! Hurry up! You're gonna take us on a little treasure hunt today.
There is no treasure.
Look, they pay you to catch the fish to feed the dolphins.
They pay me to find the exotic fish for the park.
That's all that I do.
Don't lie to me, boy! You went to a great deal of trouble to get that map to your sister.
And when we find her, she won't be a pretty sight.
Put him back in the drink.
No! All right, all right.
I'll take you on your I'll take you on your treasure hunt, and I'll show you how to read the map.
And it better be a successful hunt.
Or I'll cut you up and deliver you to the shark tank.
[squawking.]
It's in here.
It's in here.
[Murdock squawking.]
Put that book down, fool! [squawking.]
The parrot's never wrong.
You should always listen to the parrot.
He has all of the answers.
If you'd asked him, he would tell you to check the Scribner's Edition.
(Hannibal) Does this look familiar? That's it! That's exactly what it looked like! Yeah, yeah, I traced it right out of the book.
There, see? Yeah.
Of course, I sort of Californiaized it, you know? Changed "Here There Be Tygers" to "Paradise Cove," and like that.
Face, did you really sell your best friend a fake treasure map? B.
A.
, I needed the money, okay? You know, Hannibal, I'm worried about Rebecca.
I mean, what if the military has detained her? Well, if they detained her it's because they wanted to take back the reward they paid her.
Anyway, somebody thinks this is important enough to kidnap for.
Come on, Hannibal.
That's right out of fantasyland! You know Well of course, if there was a treasure, I'd own half of it because I sold him the map in the first place.
Face? Okay, okay, Barry owns the whole thing, okay? He'd want me to have half 'cause he's a friend of mine, but Does this have any legitimacy at all? I mean, does it pertain to any real place of any kind? Of course, I was always very accurate.
I measured distances and everything.
Barry was a very sharp kid.
He was just a little gullible.
If only we had a parrot, he'd have all the answers.
We've gotta find Barry's parrot.
I don't think Barry has a parrot.
Long John Silver had a parrot.
Blackbeard had a parrot.
Bluebeard had a parrot.
He wasn't even a pirate, but he had a parrot.
Hey, man.
We ain't got a parrot.
Look.
Says it right here, Colonel.
Look at that.
Pirates often talked to their parrots and the parrots repeated what the pirates pronounced.
[chuckling.]
Well, that's a great help, Murdock.
[mimicking a pirate.]
What do you wanna do, Captain? What any self-respecting pirate would do.
We go after the treasure.
All right, the map says 100 paces from the juncture of the dock and the sea wall at 240 degrees.
That's that way, 100 paces would be just beyond that sand dune.
(Face) Boy, this is ridiculous.
There were no pirates in California.
It is plain you've never heard of the bloody Frenchman, Bouchard.
You mean we're really gonna dig? I think Barry was trying to send Face some kind of a message.
I think he wants us to dig in this spot.
Hey! Hey, that's my treasure! Those are the guys from the house! [guns firing.]
Not very friendly, are they? Oh, I'm so glad you're all right.
You found them.
Yeah, I went to the reunion, I found your letter.
Thank you.
What are you doing with those, Temp? Hunting for buried treasure? [chuckling.]
(Face) Sending me that phony map.
Barry, I mean, why didn't you just send me a note telling me you had a problem? Look, I couldn't take the chance, Temp.
I had those jokers all over my case trying to find out where the Santissima was located.
I knew you'd recognize the fake map and realize I needed help.
Wait a minute, what is the Santissima? It's a 17th century Spanish galleon.
It was on its way back from the Philippines to Spain when it was intercepted off Dana Point by a French privateer named Bouchard.
[stuttering.]
Bouchard? No, Bouchard.
Now, the Captain scuttled the ship, he sunk it Thanks.
to keep Bouchard from getting his hands on the treasure.
What treasure? The usual, you know, gold, silver and something far more important.
Philip's Cross.
What's Philip's Cross? It was a birthday present from the governor general of the Philippines to his Catholic Majesty, Philip of Spain.
Well, what makes it so valuable? This cross is made of solid gold encrusted with jewels.
Emeralds, rubies and sapphires-- Hey, this is getting interesting.
(Face) Come on, Barry.
Where'd you come up with this cockamamie treasure? I mean, some old sailor sell you a treasure map? Everything I'm telling you about the Santissima and Philip's Cross is absolute historical fact.
You can check it out at any library.
I believe you.
Makes perfect sense.
Are you gonna eat that pickle? No.
No, help yourself.
Well, if it's so valuable, why hasn't someone gone after it before? They have.
There have been literally hundreds of attempts over the years but nobody could ever find the wreck.
And then you come along and, bingo! Hardly bingo.
It's taken me five years using a computer to figure the currents and tidal changes, continental drift anything that could shift the position of the wreck.
And from the Santissima's timbers.
Guys I say we help him find the cross.
Great! Thank you.
Thanks.
But you have to realize the ship belongs to Marineland once we pull it up.
They want to haul it back and turn it into an exhibit.
As for the cross, I would like to return it to the church.
Actually, to Angels Guardian Orphanage.
Oh, yeah, that's a great idea, Barry.
I guess.
(Barry) Temp, you know I really got to thank you for helping me out.
I feel kind of guilty since I took advantage of you so often when we were kids.
Took advantage of me? You took advantage of me? What about the time I conned you out of your tennis shoes? I learned to run barefoot.
Set a state record for the 440.
Oh, Bobby Moore's bike? Bobby and I came out of it great friends.
You know, he's one of LA's top tax lawyers.
Does my returns for free.
The phony treasure map? (Barry) Ended up saving my life.
You know, I really owe you, buddy.
Yes, you never can tell, Face.
Tell me, do you have a chart showing the location of the wreck? Sure, it's in my office but, you know, Morgan and his goons probably have the place staked out.
That's okay, we'll pick it up.
I bet this Bouchard is real mean.
Black hair, black heart, black beard.
I bet even his parrot is blood-thirsty.
Well, I don't know.
Actually, none of my research turned up any mention of a parrot.
He had a parrot.
They all did.
You cool it with this parrot, Murdock.
There is no parrot, and I don't wanna hear another word about it.
Well, actually, that's who has the real treasure map, my parrot.
See, the chart's in the bottom of my parrot's cage in my office.
Enough said.
[parrot squawking.]
(Morgan) Damn bird! If you don't shut your beak, I'll make soup out of you! Nothing in the desk, Captain.
(parrot) Hello.
What's going on here? We was just looking for a clue to finding Barry, Mr.
Maitland.
Well, in the future, you'll confine your activities to delivering fish.
[parrot razzing.]
[parrot laughing.]
Boy, Barry, you were playing an awful long shot leaving that note for me at the reunion.
Well, not really.
Rebecca Piper kept calling me about trying to find you.
There, you see? Huh? She seemed to think you'd show up there, but she wanted to make sure.
Kept saying something about having tens of thousands of reasons for wanting to find you.
[chuckling.]
Well, I'm not going to say a word.
Yeah, well Wait a second.
That's the car of the guys who tried to kidnap me.
(Hannibal) Are you sure? Yeah, I remember the right tail light was out.
I wanted to tag him.
Good.
Maybe you can cut me a citation, tow me a limo today since we owe one to Dr.
Richter.
Murdock, let's deal with one disaster at a time.
You know where you're going? Dolphin Building, 211.
Map's at the bottom of the parrot cage.
Right.
You and Face get the chart.
Elaine and I'll make a couple of calls about Dr.
Richter.
That's a good idea, Colonel.
Aye-aye, sir.
Well, it looks like they beat us here, Face.
Yeah, as long as they didn't find that chart.
It's a nice bird.
Nice bird.
Pretty bird.
Pretty bird.
Here we go.
[parrot growling.]
Hey, hey, hey.
Come on, here.
Look, I'm a friend of Barry's, okay? Yeah, somebody has told him about your relationship.
Very funny.
All right now.
Easy, easy.
I think he's carnivorous.
Come off of it, Face.
Parrots are not carnivorous.
You just got him all riled up.
Let the master take over.
Sure.
Sure.
By all means.
Nice, birdie.
Nice birdie, birdie, birdie.
See.
You just have to show them that you don't mean them any harm.
(Face) He's setting you up.
[parrot squawks.]
This parrot is a man-eater.
Tell you what, let's let Barry get the chart out of the cage, huh? That's a good idea.
Come on, let's go.
[squawking.]
Where are we going? Where are we going? [parrot whistling.]
(man on PA system) And up she goes! Oh, Soc“! [women screaming.]
[parrot whistling.]
Keep your eyes on the center of the pool and get your cameras ready.
[parrot squawking.]
Here comes Rosie, Gypsy and Noodles.
[grunting.]
Around they go! [parrot squawking.]
That concludes our dolphin show, ladies and gentlemen.
Thanks for being such a great audience.
Do come back and see us again.
[people cheering.]
(Barry) Hey, you brought the whole cage.
How you doing, Kidd? Hello, there.
Any word on the limo? Well, I called the army tow yard.
Bad news, Murdock.
They cut it up.
Oh, great, just great.
[squawking.]
Hey, you really got him perturbed.
I'm sorry, we didn't have time to make friends.
Let me try.
[squawking.]
One wrong move, bird, and you're a feather duster.
Got it? (parrot) Nice bird, pretty bird.
Now we need a boat.
Please, Lieutenant, you said you would control your temper.
Yo, Skipper.
ls there a problem? Is there a problem? I got a dead porpoise at the maritime morgue with a Short's beer bottle sticking out of its head and you want to know if I got a problem? Lieutenant, please.
Your name, sir? Don't tell him nothing, Pa.
They can't prove it's your bottle that did it.
Shut up, Alfred.
(Face) That's it.
That's it.
You, get out of the boat.
Get out of the boat.
Failing to provide identification to an officer involved in a legal investigation that's coming close to a felony, sir.
It's Gruber.
Murray Gruber! Now, how much is a fish like that worth, huh? $1 a pound, $2? $500, $1,000, how much is it worth? How much? One of the most intelligent mammals on the face of the earth.
A protected species.
And you offer me a bribe? That's it! This vessel and its contents are hereby impounded by the United States Coast Guard! You can't take my boat! Oh, yeah? No! You might like to swim to the harbormaster's office where you can contact an attorney.
You might want to press charges against the officer.
The cross is in the captain's cabin which is under the stern castle.
The tall structure in the back? You got it.
Good luck.
Yeah, this is a nice bird.
[screaming.]
Sorry.
Well, maybe he's getting even with me for everything I did to you as a kid.
Wait.
Wait.
Temp, do you remember the day that you conned me out of my Allman Brothers tickets? Listen, Barry, I never realized how hard I was on you back then.
And it's just that you were so easy.
You were like a proving ground to me.
No, no, see that was the day Elaine and her family came to the orphanage.
I had to be you for a couple of hours while you were gone, remember? Yeah.
They really liked me, and that was the day they decided to adopt me.
I told them the truth later.
You told them you were me, and they adopted you? Yeah.
Well, that was the deal.
That was the switch we made for my tickets.
Oh.
How was the concert? I've got it! I'll take that, thank you.
Well, now, ain't that something? (Murdock) That's a sacred relic, Morgan.
You keep that, you'll be doomed for all eternity.
I'll take me chances.
How did you find us? I got the location of the wreck out of your computer.
You can work a computer? No, but Maitland can if you put a gun in his back.
(Morgan) All right, all of you, face down on the deck.
Move it! You're gonna kill us? You and the girl, maybe.
But the others are worth a lot more alive, being the A-Team.
And you got the cross, and you want a reward on top of that? Gotta live on something before we can bust this thing up and fence it.
I radioed the army, Captain.
They'll be waiting at the dock.
Good.
After you've delivered them meet us back at the salvage yard.
[parrot squawking.]
[grunting.]
You okay, Colonel? That bird will eat anything.
[sirens wailing.]
[chuckling.]
Come on! Well, she doesn't look that great coming out of the shower.
I really don't know what you see in her.
Right.
[gun firing.]
[police siren malfunctioning.]
Melted down, the gold alone ought to be worth over half a million.
On top of that, the jewels.
[engine revving.]
[grunting.]
This belongs to somebody else, pal.
I had to grab this limo from the secretary of the army so I want this to go down smooth.
From the time Peck gets in this limo we need 15 minutes before we get to the ambush spot, do you understand? (Rebecca) 15 minutes? How am I supposed to keep him occupied for 15 minutes? Just do anything you gotta do, baby.
It's a big reward.
Templeton, I am so sorry.
I knew they made you do it.
[stammering.]
I just knew it.
And, Rebecca, I want you to know that I understand.
Okay? Well, it's all over now.
And we've got a lot of catching up to do.
Yeah.
There's champagne in the limo.
Okay? Yeah Here we are.
No, I think I feel really funny about this.
I think you should drop me off.
Driver-- No, no, Templeton.
No.
I wanna be alone with you.
Yeah.
Really, I do.
Oh.
Yes.
I've been waiting a long time for this.
Was it worth the wait? More than you can possibly imagine.
I gotta tell you something.
Hmm.
You're still a minor leaguer.
No reward this time, sweetheart.
How was the ride, Lieutenant? Well, it's nothing worth writing the alumni newsletter about.
