The Brave (2017) s01e02 Episode Script

Moscow Rules

1 Previously on "The Brave" You're not in the field anymore.
You're an analyst, so you can ditch the go-bags and embrace the coffee machines.
I can't believe she's actually here.
Her only son died in combat 10 days ago.
I need your team wheels up within the hour.
There'll be no support on this one, no cavalry.
We are the cavalry.
You're the only C.
O.
I've ever had who looks at me, and doesn't see a woman first.
The guy we lost, the guy you replaced, was her best friend.
I'm not saying I'm gonna enjoy killing these guys, but you kidnapped a woman, you get what you deserve.
Where are you going, pal? Guys, get the kids! [EXPLOSION.]
[CARS HONKING.]
[PEOPLE SPEAKING IN THE DISTANCE.]
[BUZZER SOUNDS.]
Guys, I found a place that has the best varenyky in town Hello? Hey, guys, where are you? Guys? Dear God.
[GUNSHOTS.]
[PHONE BEEPING.]
[LINE TRILLING.]
[GUNSHOTS.]
[PHONE CLATTERS ON FLOOR.]
[GUNFIRE.]
[SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
Oh! Damn it! [GUNSHOTS.]
[PANTING.]
[LOCK CLICKS SHUT.]
Watch and learn, Jazzie.
- So good.
So good.
- We're rocking it.
You go.
Coming out a little wonky there though, I mean for being a sniper, I expected a little more.
I don't know, Top.
All those years, I thought working undercover was the hardest thing I'd ever do, but this This doing nothing is harder.
Amir, you're still new, buddy.
21 people injured.
Four servicemen dead, and here we sit two weeks later, like it didn't even happen.
Do me a favor.
Look out there.
What's happening? You got Jaz and McG talking smack, bitching about horseshoes, you got Preach talking to his family.
That's not ignoring what happened.
Okay? It's called moving on, which if you're gonna be on a team like ours, that's exactly what you gotta do.
Even after the beach Yeah, especially after the beach.
Listen, the fantasy is that we go rogue, we go out there, we grab the guy that did this, and we get our revenge.
In reality, we follow orders.
In reality, our job is always the next mission.
We are not the investigators, Amir.
We're the tip of the spear.
Top, can you please settle this argument? Is there or is there not a game called "cornhole?" Are you sure we're the tip of the spear? [PHONE CHIMING.]
Cornhole, come on.
What did the new guy want? Same as the rest of us.
Justice.
Deputy Director Campbell.
Dalton, gear up.
We need your team in Ukraine.
Cassie Conner, CIA officer out of Ukraine, sent an SOS 12 minutes ago.
Now she's operating out of a warehouse here, in Sverdlovsk, it's deep in disputed territory.
Whole place is crawling with Pro-Russian rebels.
A direct attack on a CIA officer? That's a major violation of the unwritten rules of espionage.
We'll make sure to send them to bed with no dinner.
Is this mission official or unofficial? Officially unofficial.
We hop on a 130 across the Black Sea; we helo to the target.
ETA 110 mikes, so let's get after it.
[JET WHOOSHING.]
[HELICOPTER BLADES WHIRRING.]
Bird of War has LZ in sight.
All right, put us down over there.
- [GASPS.]
- No, okay.
Ms.
Conner, we're friendlies.
Okay? I'm just gonna ask you a few questions.
Is it all right if my medic examines you while I do? Yeah.
She knows what she's doing.
Patched herself up pretty good.
All right.
What is the name of your neighbor's dog? Lola.
What street was your high school on? West Oak.
My turn-ons are long walks on the beach.
My turn-offs are people who kill my friends.
Oh, you too? Okay, pulse is strong.
One through-and-through in the side.
Missed her vitals.
Lucky girl.
I'd say it was more than luck.
Girl's got skills.
Let's get this on you.
All right, she's good to go.
Mortem One, we're coming out.
We have one Pax for immediate dust-off.
I got it, I got it.
All right, hey, Ms.
Conner? You did good, all right? Now let's get you out of here.
Come on.
Proceeding with our visual sweep.
Cleansing safe house.
Hannah, does it look like anything was taken to you? Impossible to say, but the high value stuff, laptops, lock cabinets, those all seem to be there.
You hit an unsanctioned CIA station, you kill or incapacitate everyone, but you don't take the treasure? Why? Maybe she scared them off.
Bringing Conner out.
We're in Conner's bird.
We're sending it now.
- Mortem One lifting off.
- [RADIO CHATTER.]
We are ETAA 15.
All right, Mortem One is outbound.
Let's finish sterilizing the station so we can get the Hell out of here.
All classified info in flames.
[GUNSHOTS.]
[BULLETS RICOCHET.]
Mayday! Mayday! [INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER, BEEPING.]
Dalton, Mortem One is down! I repeat, Mortem One is down! Looks like it landed half a click to your South-Southeast.
Dalton, get me a visual on that crash.
Yeah, we got eyes on.
Sounded like a 50 cal brought them down.
This is insane.
First they hit a station, now they take out one of our birds? Even unmarked, that's practically an act of war.
What the hell's going on here? The Russians are doing whatever they can to get their hands on Cassie Conner.
That's what the hell is going on.
The question is why? Give me Neil Kenig.
Deputy Director Campbell at the DIA.
Well, find him! All right Mortem 2, stay away from that LZ, and out of range of those 50 cals.
Copy, Mortem Actual.
Mortem 2 is out.
Okay, everybody change out, stash gear.
We're gonna head to the crash site on foot.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
[MEN SHOUTING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
[MEN SPEAKING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
[PHONE RINGS.]
Patricia, how can I help you? I got a bird down, three men dead, and one officer of yours in the wind.
You either get over here and tell me what's going on, or I'm gonna pull my team out, and leave your girl there for Putin himself to find.
Eyes are up! My God.
[INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER.]
[MEN SPEAKING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
[ALL SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
All right, so we got two pilots still in their seats; we got negative contact, repeat negative contact, on Officer Conner.
Top! Pilot's condition is grave.
Co-pilot's not much better.
We've got to get them out of here, or they're going to die.
All right, do that, get them out of here.
Preach, green light.
Rig this thing.
- On it.
- All right, Director Campbell, we got two pilots in need of immediate EVAC.
Request Mortem 2 gets these guys out of here, and then my team and I will go after Conner.
Stand by, Dalton.
Noah? Conner was with you at the Farm in '08.
Did you know her? Yeah, she was number two in our class.
Why? Right now we have two choices, we either send in a full-blown QRF, which immediately escalates this into a major international incident or, we trust that Dalton can find Conner quietly.
Knowing how good Conner is at handling herself lets me know which is the right option.
Cassie is a rare breed.
So good the bosses at Langley sent her straight to denied-area operations.
Made her one of the youngest field officers in history.
[GRUNTING.]
[GUNSHOTS.]
[GUNSHOTS.]
[GUNSHOTS.]
[PANTING.]
Between us and the team, we'll get her back.
Mortem 2 is airborne with both injured pilots.
They're clear out of the city.
Out of danger.
Okay, Dalton.
Proceed as planned.
All right, copy that.
Conner's lost enough today.
Let's make sure she doesn't lose her life.
[REMOTE BEEPS.]
[EXPLOSION.]
What do you want? Hey, dried apple slices.
Thanks.
What'd you get? Twice-fried pork rinds.
Ooh, yum.
So you never told me you went through the Farm.
You sound surprised.
A little.
Why aren't you in the field? Look, I get it, all right? You were a field agent, so to you, that's the end-all be-all.
But in the field, you work for years, you save one person if you're lucky.
Here we save hundreds, maybe thousands.
We've identified the three men that Conner killed in the CIA station.
As you can see, they are not your garden variety pro-Russian rebel; all three men just traveled to Moscow, where they trained at Yasenevo.
Line KR.
Putin's spy hunters.
And specifically under Major Alexi Zbarov.
One of the Kremlin's most ruthless counter-intelligence bloodhounds.
Since when does Russia care enough about a young CIA officer to send their most elite spy hunters after her? That's what I want to know.
With Zbarov on Conner, it is a matter of time.
It is a when, not an if that he will find her, and God help her if he does.
[SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
[SHOUTING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
[SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
[INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER.]
I can't see faces, but it's definitely two rebels.
Yeah, well, that's okay, judging by the mood, seems like Conner is still in the wind.
[ENGINES REVVING.]
How many trucks is that? We're up to six now.
There's at least 30 rebels after her, maybe even 40.
Against us five.
We're gonna need a break.
Maybe not.
Before I put Conner on that bird, I attached a medical RFID bracelet to her wrist.
If we can get within 500 yards, Preach should be able to track it.
That's great, but first we have to get within 500 yards of her and she could be anywhere.
[OMINOUS MUSIC.]
All right, everybody, stand by.
I'm going shopping.
[SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
I think you know I'm looking for my friend.
I also think you know these Russians.
They're no friend of yours.
[SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
Are you bad for business? Shop owner says she fled West.
She had five minutes on the rebels, so we start a grid search, see if we can't catch that RFID signal.
[INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER.]
That makes ten trucks.
With the sun going down, Dalton's team will have to get off the street.
Zbarov will make them easily.
There's no way the Russians would make a direct move against Dalton.
I think Zbarev's been let off the leash, which means there's no telling what he might do.
Ms.
Rivera, happy to hear you landed here.
- Director Kenig.
- Patricia, a word? Neil, we have known each other way too long for you to pull this intra-service crap.
If you want to put my team in danger, I deserve a heads up.
His name is General Anatoli Grayevich, head of the GRU, one of Vladimir Putin's inner circle.
He's also our asset, been so for 15 years.
The single most important mole in the history of espionage.
For years, Grayevitch's handler was Brett Matthews, Moscow Station.
Brett died two years ago, heart attack, natural, but by then we'd already groomed his replacement.
Cassie Conner.
Zbarov's been hunting this mole for years.
I don't know how he found out that Conner was running him, but if he gets his hands on her, Grayevitch will be dead.
As for your heads up, I didn't give you one because I didn't know she was in play.
Conner's assignment is so top secret that no one at Langley Ops knows.
They called you in thinking this was just a simple extraction.
It is, in fact, the most important intelligence exfiltration in decades.
Your team must succeed at any cost.
Well, if you'll excuse me, I've got to go brief the Joint Chiefs.
Preparing for the worst.
Patricia, I heard about your son.
I'm very sorry.
[PHONE CHIMES.]
Boss, Dalton's got a fix on Cassie's RFID medical bracelet.
It's pinging to an abandoned warehouse.
Hannah and I don't like it.
Cassie knows the city like the back of her hand, yet according to this, she's decided to take cover in the middle of nowhere.
Doesn't feel right.
- We think it's a trap.
- Understood.
Dalton, go to a private line.
All right, go for Dalton.
Adam, I just spoke with Neil Kenig.
While I cannot disclose what I was told, I can tell you what I believe based on the information given.
Okay.
I believe every minute you are there, the enemy you are up against will grow in size and sophistication.
I believe the forces that are looking for Cassie Conner will not hesitate to kill you and your team no matter what the political cost.
Last but not least, I believe if Cassie Conner falls into the wrong hands, the consequences will be global.
Understood.
Switching.
All right.
From here on out, it's Moscow Rules.
Safeties off, fingers on the trigger.
We're gonna make a play for the target indicated by the RFID.
Top, it's obviously a trap.
- No one asked for your opinion.
- Well, maybe you should.
You're probably right.
Odds are, it is a trap.
See, the thing about traps is the people who set them tend to get tunnel vision.
[SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
They fixate on their prey.
They imagine everything turning out exactly how they orchestrated.
And they don't stop to think for one second maybe they're the prey themselves.
[SILENCED GUNSHOTS.]
[SILENCED GUNSHOTS.]
[WHISTLES.]
Where is she? We don't know.
We don't know! [SILENCED GUNSHOT.]
Clear.
All right, well, good news is all they had was Conner's bracelet, so I don't think they have her.
Better news is we got their phones.
[PHONE BEEPING.]
Download metadata on each phone, then run MYSTIC on every single number.
Filter out anything beyond a ten mile radius.
Smart.
They're gonna track all the rebels using their phones.
At least now we can see the whole board.
We're up to 12 trucks now.
Make that 14.
That is one ugly board.
Dalton, you need to get to ground fast.
You have multiple inbound targets, and are about to be totally surrounded.
All right, everybody on me.
We're moving back to a secure location.
[ENGINE APPROACHING, INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER.]
[MEN SPEAKING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
[INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER.]
This is crap.
We should be out there looking for her.
And instead we're doing what exactly? Being smart.
We're doing nothing.
Yeah, sometimes doing nothing is doing something.
Really, Preach? Yeah, really, McG.
Like when you're waiting, you're trusting that more will be revealed.
By who? God? There's a woman out there fighting and dying.
And us getting killed won't help her.
Wow.
You're such a team player.
Hey.
That's enough.
All right, you guys want to vent? That's one thing, but going at each other, especially while we're in the field, that's a non-starter.
Now, if you would let Preach finish his sentence, you would've heard him say we're waiting for our team back in D.
C.
Unless of course you guys think you're so high-speed you can just do everything on your own.
Right now, any move we make could put us further from Conner.
Any move could get us captured, worse.
Now, you heard Noah.
He knows her.
DIA says she's gonna reach out; it's our job to be ready when she does.
Until that point, we will wait.
That is being a team player.
[ENGINE APPROACHING.]
[INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER.]
We cannot ask Dalton to find a needle in the haystack.
Intel is our job.
At least we know Zbarov still hasn't got her.
That is no comfort.
Zbarov outnumbers us 20 to 1.
He wins the war of attrition.
We've got to find out where Cassie is hiding.
Noah, you were with Cassie at the Farm, so you did street work and SDRs together, right? Who was your instructor? Corey, Waters, Vega? It was Vega.
Vega, okay.
Vega is aggressive, but he's all about deception first, and then contact.
Anticipate where your enemy thinks you're going to go, then do the opposite.
So in this case, that would be to move Cassie away from her points of safety, the CIA station, Dalton's team, and into the city.
That's a start.
Think it through.
Base principals.
You're Cassie Conner.
First thing you do is evade, in this case, someplace right here.
Second thing you do is find a safe location.
Let's assume she's done that.
Third thing you do is signal your own people.
Yes, but Dalton and his team don't see any signals.
What if it can't? 'Cause it's not a signal for them, it's a signal for us.
Lights.
Wind the drone feedback one hour before sundown, then run it back at high speed.
Looking for some kind of flashing lights.
Nothing.
Stop! That building there in the corner just went dark.
Run it back for me! She's leaving a trail of breadcrumbs.
She sure is.
To where? Someplace Zbarov can't touch her.
Dalton.
We found her.
Women only.
- Smart, right? - Mm-hmm.
All right, hand it over.
No keep that down, it's good.
We're right here.
Your Ka-bar.
Come on, I'll be naked without it.
Yeah, well you need to be.
Any of these guys stop you and they find anything You know this would be a lot easier if we weren't the only ones who thought she was in there.
Well, you don't need to tell me.
You good? I'd feel a lot better if I had my Sig.
All right, remember no matter what, do not run.
Only prey runs.
Maybe prey knows what it's doing.
[SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
[MAN SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
- Does Jaz speak Russian? - Not enough to pass for native.
I've got them.
She'll handle it.
[SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
[SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
If they're checking out my ass, I know I'm safe.
Okay, she's in.
Of course she is.
[SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
Look, I'm looking for someone who really needs my help.
Well, you cannot be here.
It's a sacred place.
One of the few places women can find peace in this country.
And sanctuary from those who are truly evil.
Please.
[TIRES SQUEALING.]
[MEN SHOUTING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
Top, we've got a problem.
Yep.
We gotta move.
[BOTH SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
Follow me.
He thinks he is the first man to flex his muscles in here.
We have prepared for this.
Okay, I got her.
She's alive.
And ambulatory, but barely.
But we're not going on any hikes.
You guys got a way out? Dalton, do you have a plan forgetting Conner out of there? There's no way she's gonna pass on the streets.
The rebels are searching every car.
Not every car.
[SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
[SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
[SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
[SILENCED GUNSHOTS.]
[CAR HORN BLARING.]
Come on, come on.
Come on, come on, I got you.
Come on.
All right.
There's a step.
Watch your step.
Watch your step.
All right, Jaz.
We're en route.
Figure 90 seconds to you.
You know what side you'll be coming out? - We're on the East side.
- All right, copy East.
Thank you.
Please.
Sticking it to the Russians? This was my pleasure.
[SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
Okay, Dalton.
Make the second right, then it's three blocks down the alley.
Here they are.
Take a step down.
Okay, here you go.
- You got her? - Yeah.
All right, we're good.
Let's go.
No vehicles turning to follow.
No chatter on radios or phones.
Okay, Dalton.
Looks like you're clear.
Top, we might be clear, but she's not.
You need to pull over someplace ASAP, she needs blood, and needs it now, man.
Welcome back.
You guys again.
I feel like I'm making a bad impression.
Quite the opposite.
Girl, you are badass.
Amen to that.
Is this guy's blood any good? You're not gonna catch any diseases, but we have better if you ask me.
I'm just unfortunately not your type.
Agree to disagree.
By the way, Noah Morgenthau says hello.
Noah? He was on this? - He's back in D.
C.
- I should've known that.
I wouldn't have worried.
Noah was the top of our class.
Dalton, I'm watching the rebel trucks.
They're shadowing Mortem Two.
There is nowhere for your helicopter to land.
[LAUGHS.]
Oh.
Of course there isn't.
Can we get Dalton out over land? We just got them through one gauntlet, you want to risk another one? The rebels might've been fooled, but Zbarov's not stupid.
He'll keep a couple 50 cals on that helicopter and shoot it to pieces if it tries to land.
[LAUGHTER.]
Care to let a gal in on the joke? As many times as we've had to leave hotspots by chopper, we've always wondered why don't the bad guys just set up at the LZ, wait, pick us off as we leave? Guess our number's finally up.
I don't suppose you guys came up with a plan for what to do when that happened.
We have a plan.
We got plans for plans.
It's just We never anticipated the numbers being so stacked against us.
Here, you're good to go, Top.
Hey, Top? You're reading my mind.
You think that'll work? I do.
We'll use the truck as the top of the trail.
Right, Jaz, I want you to coordinate the exfil with the DIA.
Have that chopper loiter five mikes out.
On my signal, I want you and Amir to secure the LZ for touchdown.
If my timing's right, we should only be a few seconds behind you.
- What's the signal? - It won't be subtle.
Amir does a great job hiding this thing.
Let's be a little less thorough.
Mortem 2, continue to circle.
Copy, Mortem Actual.
[ENGINE REVS.]
All right, where do you think? Seem like a good place for a last stand? The Alamo.
Come on, come on.
Let's go.
All right, Jaz.
Time to head to the LZ.
Copy.
Moving.
[INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER.]
[TIRES SQUEAL.]
[SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
Dalton, Zbarov has found your vehicle.
I repeat, he has found your vehicle.
[MEN SHOUTING IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE.]
[EXPLOSION.]
[TENSE MUSIC.]
Yes, tactical trucks are heading for the explosion.
Mortem 2, you are clear to land.
[HELICOPTER LANDING.]
One, two, three! Mortem 2, you are clear of threats but not for long.
Recommend immediate dust-off.
Mortem 2? Mortem 2? There they are! - Four! - Did you see the signal? Five! [HELICOPTER ENGINE REVS.]
Mortem 2, you are clear of 50 cal range.
ALL: Yes! Good job.
Good job, everybody.
Nice work, y'all, nice work.
They made it.
- I need a drink.
- Yeah, me too.
C'mon, I'm buying, Mr.
Top-of-His-Class.
["MOUNTAIN AT MY GATES" BY FOALS PLAYING.]
- [KNOCKING ON DOOR.]
- Come in.
Hi, Neil.
Hey.
I just wanted to thank you personally, because that was big save as big as it gets.
Well, thank you.
Neil.
You owe me.
And what I give it takes away Whether I go or when I stay I see the mountain at my gates - [DOG BARKS.]
- Stop.
Scavenger, it's not for you.
Lay down.
[DOG BARKS.]
Patton.
Sit.
Hey, Patton.
No.
Lay down.
Lay this is pointless.
Seems like no one wants to listen to you.
Yeah, I'm sensing a pattern.
Listen, I was wrong to question you when you were waiting on D.
C.
- Well, you were frustrated.
- I was wrong.
Doing nothing was the right call.
And it was your call, and I'm sorry.
What was that? I thought I heard something.
I don't think anyone said anything.
[LAUGHTER.]
Look, when I was a kid, my old man used to get sloppy as hell.
Only thing I could do was wait.
Just sit there, take whatever he threw at me.
Let it pass.
Sometimes all you can do is wait.
People like us don't do powerless very well.
You think? But each day I see less
