The Dead Zone s02e02 Episode Script

Descent (1)

I had the perfect life until I was in a coma for six years.
And then I woke up and found my fiancée married to another man.
My son doesn't know who I am.
Everything has changed including me.
One touch and I can see things things that happened, things that will happen.
You should see what I see.
Narrator: Previously on "The Dead Zone" Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night, and for a second I forget who I am, but then I look over at Walt and remember.
What are you gonna do when he finds someone for real? Actually, I was gonna hitch a lift with Dana.
Well, all right.
Sarah: And then I start to think, what if you were never in that car crash? Sarah, I've loved you all my life.
Dana: Tell me you weren't holding Sarah's hand while you were making love to me.
Thanks for bringing her back to us.
And I don't know if that's because I feel like you're slipping away from me or if it's because my heart is trying to tell me something.
(applause, whistling) Well, that was good.
Yeah, okay.
What? I liked it.
Okay, it's not going to win any Oscars, but, you know, it was a diverting hour and a half.
We could have gone and seen that Italian film.
Oh no.
What? off a dark background for two hours, blah, I hate that.
No, actually I'm the one who hates that.
Oh, well fine, next time it's an Ingmar Bergman double feature for you, okay? So you want to tell me what's going on? Nothing's going on.
You pick a movie starring The Rock, and you think nothing's going on? There are dozens of other little things like the surprise lunch dates in the middle of the week.
You watched an entire football game with me and JJ.
Well, I'm sorry.
I'll try to make more time to ignore you both.
And at the same time, the evening phone calls with Johnny Smith suddenly end.
I had to marry a cop.
We're taking time.
We're trying to figure out how we fit into each other's lives or if we even do.
That's funny 'cause right now it seems like you're trying to figure out how you fit into our life.
(phone ringing) Bannerman.
Yeah.
All right, pick me up in front of the theater in five minutes.
All right.
- You had to marry a cop.
- Yeah.
We're not done, okay? I owe you a conversation rain check.
(keys jingle) Right.
Johnny: Sonny Elliman became an aide to Greg Stillson following a career in the military.
Military? What branch of the military? Okay, talking to myself that's bad.
Monologues visions of Armageddon obsessive internet searches the trifecta of mental health warning signs.
Sleep would be good.
(phone rings) You're up late, Walt.
I know exactly where it is.
Yeah, I'm on my way.
And then there's the paranoia.
And I'm still talking to myself.
(dogs barking) - Anything? - No.
When the dogs fail and you call me? It's not their fault, they got skunked the other day.
This is Tom Hirsch's SUV.
He and his brother Doug left this morning with their girlfriends.
I used to come out here years ago when I was little.
You're not going to believe this place.
This way.
Keep an eye on this.
Right up here.
They went in, but they haven't left.
Walt: What is this, a coal mine? Highsmith Copper Mine.
- You know this place? - You could say that.
I own it.
(theme music playing) * Oooh * * Fall in love, fall in love, fall in love * * Fall in love * * Feel no shame for what you are * * Feel no shame for what you are * * Feel no shame for what you are * * Fall in love, fall in love * * Fall in love.
* Johnny: My grandfather owned it.
He ran it.
Copper pennies were still a staple back in the '30s.
Walt: What happened, the vein ran out? Johnny: Yeah, I guess.
There were accidents.
I got into a little trouble with my dad when I brought a girl up here once.
(dogs whimper) Man: Oh, they're spooked now.
Walt: All right, head back and tell Roscoe to call Terry Collier at County Search and Rescue, all right? Doug: Wow! - Girl: Are you sure it's safe? - Tom: I told you, I've been all through here.
It's fine.
Don't worry.
(metal scraping) - You hear that? - Hear what? Man: That's enough for today, boys.
(coughing) Man: Move along, Stengel.
Mr.
Smith.
This mine seems to know me by name.
What the hell is that supposed to mean? I wish I knew.
This cave-in looks recent.
There was a cave-in explosion.
Natural gas explosion.
The kids are alive, but they're separated.
That explosion must have destabilized this whole place.
- Yeah, it's awake all right.
- We gotta get Search and Rescue here.
(clicks, static) My grandfather's name was John Smith.
(timbers creaking, rubble falling) - Sheriff.
- Hi, Terry.
How ya doin'? Listen, we got four teenagers.
We got two male, two female in there.
Terry: And a six-pack I bet.
Terry, this is John Smith.
John, this is Terry Collier, Search and Rescue.
John Smith I've heard about you.
The old John Smith closed this mine down after the big cave-in of '49.
Yeah, I was named for him.
They wrote songs about that day.
Don't suppose you've ever sang 'em at your house.
I knew some of the kids who lost their fathers down there.
We got gas pockets in there.
We got unstable ceilings.
The whole place is a mess.
Terry: They've been blasting the east face for Sunbird's new ski runs.
Somebody take this! All this rain we've had has probably made this whole place unstable.
Let's put up some temp supports! We need helmets.
We need climbing harnesses.
Bring those lights! Rudy, gas monitor.
We have some anxious parents waiting for any kind of news you can give them.
John, you want to handle this? I gotta help out Collier.
Excuse me, Reverend.
I'm sorry.
Blankets, portable heaters, food and coffee for everyone.
Oh! I'll have our people give the reporters periodic briefings so you and Walt won't have to worry about it.
- Faith Heritage Alliance in action.
- Promised you my support, didn't I? Truth is, whenever anything like this happens, we're very often the first relief on the scene.
I've known some of these folks for years.
Purdy: Folks, this is Johnny Smith.
I'm sure you've heard of him.
Johnny, this is Sam and Marie Hirsch, Tom and Doug's mom and dad; the Salkowes, Erin's mother and father; (panting) This is Bill and Maggie Tyner, Kate's mother.
Folks, there was a cave-in and they are trapped, but I don't believe any of them are seriously hurt.
We just don't know exactly where they are.
The rescue team is preparing to go in.
But if they don't know where they are I think I can help the search teams find them.
My Kate, she didn't want to take her coat.
She was mad because I wouldn't buy her a new coat.
We had a big fight when she was leaving.
I'm sure that the sheriff and Mr.
Smith are doing everything they can to help find her.
But if they're gonna have success we have to let them go about their business.
Thank you very much, Johnny.
The volunteers have set up a tent over here.
They're bringing in coffee and heaters are set up.
Mr.
Smith, just tell us that our children are going to get out okay.
We're going to try to find them as soon as we can.
It's amazing what a decent guy Gene Purdy can be sometimes.
I was thinking the same thing.
I almost believe this has nothing to do with those personal liability lawyers.
All six of them, meeting at Alliance headquarters right now.
This mine is part of the Vera Smith Trust controlled by Faith Heritage.
He's worried about being sued? The airline company's always your best friend right after the plane goes down.
You okay? Yeah, I just saw some things in the mine.
- About the kids? - No.
From a long time ago.
The mine was one of those things we never mentioned around the table when my grandfather came to dinner on Sunday nights.
I knew some miners died in there.
But somehow I knew not to ask questions.
What kind of things did you see? I think it's time I asked some of those questions I didn't ask at dinner.
I'll check out the history, county records, see what I can find.
- Thanks.
- Anything for a friend.
Officer: Hey, Walt! Hey.
I thought you might like some hot coffee.
That's before I saw Reverend Purdy has brought the whole town fair up here.
Well, I'll take your coffee over Purdy's any day.
- Sarah: Scary up here, huh? - Walt: Naw.
I was up here once when I was these kids' age.
Yeah? Hey, Sarah.
Hey, Johnny.
Would you like some coffee? No, thanks.
We're about ready, Walt.
See ya.
Hey! Be careful in there.
(wind moaning) Take a look down there, boys.
Man: Fire in the hole! Walt: You okay, John? Yeah, just walking on some old footsteps here.
More like walking on a graveyard.
All right.
I need this post and beam reinforced before we go any further.
Man: You got it.
Hey! Wear it.
I don't intend to let this mine take any more souls.
(metal wheels squealing) Look out! It was just a vision of the past.
Old ore cart coming down the tracks.
John, maybe you're better off up top.
You've done more than enough today, already.
Terrain's gonna get a lot tougher on that leg too.
No.
I'm here till we find 'em.
Suit yourself.
We about ready to move out? Terry: Let's go! (wheels squealing) - What's that? - Did you hear that? That squeal sound.
- It wasn't the past.
- What? Get out of the way! Get down! (exhales heavily) It was the future.
Wow! That thing must not have been secured.
It just happened to fall today, after 50 years? Our hammering must have shaken it loose, is all.
Maybe the mine doesn't like you, Mr.
Smith.
(chuckling) Johnny: How many died here, Collier, before they shut down the mine? One here, one there, over the years.
The union had been after John Smith on safety protocols that whole time.
Then in March of '49 see, they were trying for a new production record.
the usual crew number.
They were in the four cross-cut north section.
About 8:00 that night, a fire broke out.
In a matter of minutes, smoke and lethal gas filled the entire space.
The miners tried to break through the wall.
When water flooded the haulage way, they were trapped.
Only one choice for each man death by drowning or poison gas.
21 men went under the water.
Nine died from burning lungs.
The mine let one man go to tell the story.
I met him once or twice.
Name's Stengel.
He's a baseball manager.
He used to live over in Trimble.
(bats squealing) (screaming) I know where they are.
Two levels down, east passage, at the end of the tunnel.
Walt: Tom, Erin, can you hear us?! We're in here! We ran from the cave-in and then we got lost.
You're gonna be okay.
Did you find Doug and Kate? - Johnny: Not yet.
- It's our fault.
They didn't even want to come.
Okay, get these two to the surface.
Maybe the others aren't far away.
Walt: Let's go.
Anything? Miner: Morning, Mr.
Smith.
Die, John Smith.
Blood for blood, Mr.
Smith.
Water.
We gotta get out of here! Terry: Tie off on something! Hang on! Wait for it to break! Terry: Hold on tight! Here she comes! (brace creaks) - Where's Collier? - He's gone.
(reporters murmuring) Reporter #1: How were you able to survive? Reporter #2: When was the last time you saw the other two? Reporter #3: What do you have to say to the search and rescue that saved you? Dana: Mrs.
Bannerman? Dana.
The wife of a sheriff must spend a lot of time worrying about her husband's safety.
Does that compassionate tone come naturally, or do they teach it to you - in journalism school? - People are interested I like to keep my private life private.
Okay? Off the record, whose face do you see first when you imagine them coming out of the mine, Johnny's or Walt's? Go to hell.
I'm sorry I said that.
No, you're not.
Where's Collier? I gotta go deal with the family.
Walt: Terry didn't make it.
I gotta go call his wife.
Terry Collier, with the rescue team? Tunnel flooded, he's not coming out.
The other children? Still not sure where they are.
- We couldn't find them anywhere.
- (whimpering) Johnny: I didn't feel any traces of them, either.
I don't know if this will help, but I found this old map of the mine, down at the county assessor's office.
Four cut north, Mr.
Smith? Well, that's where my geologists says the copper is.
Give us another week to shore it up before we start blasting.
And miss the production record? It'll be fine, Eli.
Four cross-cut north.
We start tonight, gentlemen.
Mr.
Smith? Mr.
Smith! Help me! Somebody help me! Kate: Help me! Four cross-cut north.
She's trapped in four cross-cut north.
- Sarah: How's Erica? - Terry was working the night shift.
She didn't even know he was called to a scene.
Oh, God.
She had me stand there and talk to her about nothing, while she tried to keep it under control.
Her kids were right there.
Promise me I will never get that phone call.
- We gotta go back in there.
- No.
I called an experienced mine rescue team, same guys that saved those miners in Pennsylvania.
- They can be here in three hours.
- We can't wait that long.
Let me guess, you had another vision? I had one too.
I saw a good man get killed in there.
Terry's crew was not trained for this.
I made the call to go in.
I'm making another one.
We stay and wait Kate Tyner's in four cut north section.
It's filling up with water.
We don't have three hours.
Not even two.
Is that a map of the mine? I saw a way around the collapsed area.
Let me see that thing.
Sarah: What? We're buried in a cave-in.
- Is this a cave-in from the past? - No, it's the future.
This is our future.
Then you're not going back in there.
Look, the chamber that I saw had an abandoned ore cart.
Number 47.
If we can see that cart, we have a chance to avoid the cave-in.
But if we don't go in Kate's gonna die.
Better get some dry clothes on.
- That's something, huh? - Johnny: What? Today, she's got one guy too many - tomorrow, maybe none at all.
- It doesn't help to think like that.
You gotta think like that.
A husband and a father has to.
I'm asking "Is the insurance paid? Will it cover the mortgage?" Yeah, I understand.
Don't think I'm not asking myself what happens if you make it out of here and I don't.
I'm not at all happy about that possibility.
This is going to be okay, Walt.
Yeah, what? You had another vision? No, just your basic empty promise.
You afraid of dying, John? Me? I think I'm on bonus time as it is.
That way.
I'm not afraid of dying.
I am afraid of not being there, though, for them.
The tough times talk to JJ about girls, help Sarah with the TV when she doesn't know how to work the remote.
- Oh, you do that? - Uh-huh.
Can you come over to my house when this is over? The truth is, John you were always a better match for Sarah.
She loves you, Walt.
I know.
She loves you, too.
I'm just trying to figure out how John Wayne would deal with Randolph Scott in this situation.
We obviously like very different kinds of movies, Walt.
See? There you go.
Another thing the two of you have in common.
You underestimate yourself.
You know that? (chuckles) That's funny, 'cause Sarah says that all the time.
Johnny: See? Walt: Says it's one of my best qualities modesty.
Johnny: Yeah, well, I agree with her.
- Walt: Makes me feel like a pussy.
- If it works for the lady Walt: She seem distracted to you lately? I notice she hasn't been calling you as much.
- Johnny: Yeah, well - That scares the hell out of me.
Walt: Sometimes I think that I'm smothering her.
It is possible to love someone too much and drive them away.
So I try and tune it down, but I don't want to be too distant, you know? This may come as a surprise to you, but before Sarah I didn't have that much luck with the ladies.
Why the hell am I telling you all this? You're the one that's causing me all this grief.
Would John Wayne talk to Randolph Scott like this? Yeah, right before one of them dies.
Johnny: John Wayne never dies.
Walt: That is so not true.
"Reap the Wild Wind," "The Cowboys" Johnny: You've seen every John Wayne movie? Walt: Hell, you betcha.
The Duke rules.
(clicking) Johnny: Let me see.
It's Doug Hirsch's flashlight.
This way.
Johnny: Doug! Doug! - Doug! - Doug: Here! I'm here! You all right? Yeah, I lost my flashlight in the cave-in.
I couldn't see where to go.
Watch my finger.
I didn't think anyone was coming.
- We have your brother and Erin already.
- Have you heard Kate's voice? Yeah, I thought I heard her, this way.
How do we find her? Doug: Kate! Kate! - Walt: Kate! - Doug: Kate! Get out! Walt! Push! (grunting) I changed the future.
Yeah, you did, man.
Now stay still, Walt.
We gotta get you out of here, man.
Go go find Kate.
Go find Bandage his head.
Keep him awake and keep him talking.
Pilgrim take care of our family.
No, that's your job and you're gonna be doing it for a long, long time.
You hear me? - Miner #1: Let's go! - Miner #2: Come on, guys! - Move it! - Grab your gear, let's go! - Get out of here! - Get the hell out of here! Four cross-cut north.
Miner: Break through the wall, it's our only hope! (screaming) Find a tunnel, you'll find air.
This place loves you.
You're talking to yourself again.
Kate! (sobbing) (screams) - Oh, thank God.
- Are you hurt? I can't feel my fingers or toes.
This water's pretty cold.
Is Doug okay? We were with his brother and we couldn't find Kate, Doug is fine.
He's waiting for you a couple of passages over, okay? Is someone coming for us? No.
Kate, we're going to have to swim out of here.
No! No, I can't! We'll die! Listen, I know where to go.
It's not that far.
No! No! Kate, take my hand.
Take my hand.
What? Do you know my name? My name is John Smith.
- The guy who sees things.
- Yeah.
I'm gonna tell you something, okay, Kate? This is going to be okay.
This is going to be okay.
I want you to take some deep breaths, and I want you to swim.
Slow, steady strokes.
- You got it? - Okay.
- Okay.
- Okay.
Don't let go! - I won't.
Okay? - Okay.
Just hold on.
Count of three.
Okay? One, two (murmuring) We intend to seal this mine permanently, so that nothing like this can ever, ever happen again.
It's them.
We need some help here! No.
Sarah: Walt! Wait, please I need to - Walt! Oh my God, what's wrong?! - Would somebody look after her? Walt baby! (sobbing) No Walt! Give me a backboard, neck brace, and monitoring equipment.
Walt, no (hysterical crying) I'm glad you got 'em out.
The mine has enough ghosts already.
- Mr.
Stengel? - How do you know my name? Sir, my name is John Smith.
I believe you used to work for my grandfather.
Would you help me find some of the families of the men who worked here? Thank you.
Man: People, I need you to clear this area, please! Walt.
Let's go! Blood pressure's dropping.
He's crashing! Man: Come on, let 'em work.
They'll take good care of him.
- Let me come with him.
- I'm sorry we need the room to work.
- But I'm his wife! Please! - Ma'am, we'll meet you at the hospital.
Please! No! Sarah, please let them do their jobs.
Purdy: It'll be all right.
(theme music playing) - No no! - Yes yes! You're grounded!
