The Dead Zone s02e03 Episode Script

Ascent (2)

I had the perfect life until I was in a coma for six years.
And then I woke up and found my fiancée married to another man.
My son doesn't know who I am.
Everything has changed including me.
One touch and I can see things things that happened, things that will happen.
You should see what I see.
Narrator: Previously on "The Dead Zone" - Why did you come over here, Sarah? - I came to give you something.
You recognize this? You won it for me in a nickel machine, that night at the county fair.
I always meant to give it back to you.
I just wanted to do it at the right time, and then I realized there may never be a right time.
So you want to tell me what's going on? Nothing's going on.
You pick a movie starring The Rock and you think nothing's going on? At the same time, the evening phone calls with Johnny Smith suddenly end.
We're taking time.
We're trying to figure out how we fit into each other's lives.
That's funny, 'cause right now it seems like you're trying to figure out how you fit into our life.
Four teenagers two male, two female in there.
See you.
Off the record, whose face do you see first when you imagine them coming out of the mine? Johnny's or Walt's? Get out! Walt! Please, honey Walt! - Oh my God.
Walt, baby.
- Somebody look after her! Doctor: The surgery went well.
Dr.
Shaw and I drained the blood from the subdural hematoma, and he's responding to the corticosteroids.
Sarah: Is that where the hematoma was? Doctor: Yeah.
I forget you've had some experience with this sort of thing.
Anyway, the swelling is going down, but we'll have to keep a close eye on him.
The good news is he's breathing on his own, and there's no sign of permanent injury to the brain tissue, on film at least.
Shouldn't he be waking up now? Sarah he's in a coma.
- Not again.
- Sorry! - The kid is ruthless, man.
- He's hiding cards up his sleeve! - No, I'm not! - You're calling me a liar? Hey.
- Can I see Dad? - Yeah, of course you can.
But I need to talk to you first, okay? Okay.
Now, after your dad got hurt the other night, the doctors helped him get better.
And they've done everything that they can for now.
But he needs to do some more mending himself, so he's - he's still sleeping.
- When will he wake up? We have a game on Sunday.
Well then, let's hope for Sunday.
Okay.
Okay.
Sarah: I know the bandages might look a little scary, but he's still just your dad underneath and I know that he would love to hear your voice.
Hey, Dad.
Do you really think he can hear us? Yes.
Yes, I really do.
Doctor, hear me out.
There was a kid I coached.
He was a hockey player.
And when I touched him, I knew he had a heart condition.
I saw something that a doctor couldn't see.
- I might be able to do it again.
- Do what again, Johnny? We've identified his injuries and done everything we know how to do.
But you haven't done everything he knows how to do.
Doctor, if we don't do something, he's going to die.
I've seen it.
Mrs.
Bannerman could we have a minute with you? Yes? Johnny wants permission to use his abilities to diagnose Walt.
I might be able to find something out.
I can't promise Do you know? Do you know what's going to happen to him? No.
I just know I should try.
Okay.
All right.
I've never seen him so still.
I know.
It seems like he's always in motion.
Do you need me to to do anything? (softly) No.
* Red Rover, Red Rover, send Walter right over * * Red Rover, Red Rover, send Walter right over.
* Your mom's not in pain anymore, Wally.
And someday, we'll all meet up again.
Johnny! Are you all right? - Sit down.
- Take it easy.
Deep breaths.
You okay? Johnny: It was like a roller-coaster.
I was just trying to hang on.
I was just trying to find a way of - I don't think I can help.
- Are you sure? That spike is you, Johnny.
It's the minute you touched him.
Johnny: I did that? - How? - I have no idea.
But it's the first and only good sign we've had.
(theme music playing) * Oooh * * Fall in love, fall in love, fall in love * * Fall in love * * Feel no shame for what you are * * Feel no shame for what you are * * Feel no shame for what you are * * Fall in love, fall in love * * Fall in love.
* How's your headache? Better.
- How's Johnny doing? - I finally got him off to bed.
Mrs.
Clark's with him.
She'll call me if he wakes up.
And I've been waking up all the top neurosurgeons in New England.
Funny enough, I happen to have the home phone number to every coma specialist in a 500-mile radius! Leaving no stone unturned.
Yeah, again.
The doctor's given me a green light to try again.
Oh.
She was a little concerned about my headache, but I'm fine.
- Thank you.
- He's a good man, Sarah.
Yeah.
Dr.
Gibson says it's still too early for the bucket of ice.
Ice? Sometimes a coma patient will wake up if you chuck a bucket of ice on his chest.
It's supposed to stimulate the brain.
- You didn't - What? Toss a bucket of ice on me when I was in a coma? The hell I didn't.
Once a week for a month! Now I know why I remember feeling really really cold.
Maybe I'm just a psychic bucket of ice where Walt's concerned.
My mind knows what it's like to be in a coma.
Maybe it knows the way out too.
- What are they doing? - Walt's already hooked up, but just to be safe, we're monitoring Johnny's heart, blood pressure, EEG and temp as well.
Nurse: Ready, Doctor.
We're on your cue, Johnny.
Johnny woke up.
Johnny woke up.
Johnny's voice: You want to tell me what's going on? You want to tell me what's going on? You want to tell me what's going on? Nothing's going on.
You pick a movie starring The Rock and you think nothing's going on? Or the dozens of other little things, like the surprise lunch dates in the middle of the week and watching an entire football game with me and JJ.
Well, I'm sorry.
I'll try to make more time to ignore you both.
At the same time, the evening phone calls to Johnny Smith suddenly end.
I had to marry a cop.
We're taking some time, trying to figure out how we fit into each other's lives or if we even do.
That's funny, 'cause right now, it seems like you're trying to figure out how you fit in our life.
Careful.
I just got tomato soup with half and half in it.
Yeah, the half and half button sticks, so you just gotta kind of clear it.
(clears throat) - I'm just gonna go for my coffee.
- Right.
Sorry.
(chuckles nervously) (exhales heavily) Wow.
(groans) What's with the face? I just met the most beautiful woman.
Oh yeah, she's something all right.
I've seen her here before.
She's got a fella in a coma.
- Oh yeah? - The girl's got baggage, Wally.
What are you talking about? Sarah's voice: I got a call for Sarah Bracknell today.
- A wake-up call.
- What are you talking about? Johnny woke up.
Does he remember things? Apparently he remembers everything like it was yesterday.
Oh.
Yeah.
How can I face him? Joe: Sounds like Sarah's having second thoughts.
Dad, she's in shock.
Hell, we both are.
Her boyfriend just came out of a six-year coma.
Wally, he's not just some boyfriend.
They were engaged childhood sweethearts and all that.
- This really isn't helping.
- No.
It's the kind of help you don't want.
It's the truth.
Her feelings for this fella never died.
She tied them up in a ribbon and put them in a drawer.
- I know she loves me.
- Ayuh pregnant girl, no boyfriend of course she loved you.
You rode in like a knight in shining armor.
Now she's not so desperate, and you're in the way.
Walt? Separate them now! Why did you pull me out? (announcements on PA) How's Walt? The doctor says the swelling's actually going down.
- He should be waking up.
- But he is not? We've been through this before, you and I.
What can I say, Sarah? - I wish you could say "April Fools.
" - You're in my prayers.
- Hey, Gene.
- Johnny.
We put a man on the moon, and we still haven't come up with a hospital gown that doesn't completely humiliate you! How are you feeling? I'm fine.
It was just a bloody nose.
- As a consequence of what? - Somehow Johnny's visions are stimulating Walt's brain.
Your CAT scan looks okay, but I don't like your vitals.
- We should stop.
- Of course we're stopping.
- Is it helping Walt or not? - His EEG shows lighter sleep patterns.
His blood pressure has come down, his heart rate is good.
I can't explain why it's helping, but it is.
What was that famous guy's name? The psychic in the '30s? - Edgar Cayce.
- Right.
He could do the same thing.
I've got to go back in.
Can we talk about this? - I saw the light, Gene.
- The light? The white light.
I'm seeing the world he's living in or the world his mind thinks he's living in.
The light is waiting for him, and it's pretty damn attractive.
I'll do everything in my power to keep him away from it.
With all due respect, I don't want you anywhere near that white light.
You came too close to dying yourself not long ago.
But you can't stop me on this one.
Not on this one.
I know why you're doing this, Johnny.
Then you know I have to do it.
Doctor: Sarah, the baby is crowning now.
- We're almost there.
- Breathe.
And push.
(grunts) - That's it! That's it! - (baby cries) You have a beautiful little boy.
- A little boy.
- A little boy.
Do you have a name picked out yet? John.
Johnny woke up.
Sarah: Johnny's never going to wake up, and as hard as it is, I know I have to accept that.
And I'm trying to, Walt.
Sarah, I know it hasn't been that long, but all the time we've spend together You have been the best friend anyone could ever have in a situation like this.
Especially a situation like this.
I mean I don't know many other men who would want to I'm not like other men.
No you're not.
I don't know what I would have done without you.
I've been dreaming about that since the moment I saw you at the coffee machine.
I know.
Johnny's voice: I was in a coma for six years.
Give my love to your family, won't you? What ya got there? Nothing.
Just an old keepsake.
I don't know what it's doing in here.
Joe: Her feelings for this fella never died.
She tied them up in a ribbon and put them in a drawer.
Now you're in the way.
If you love her, let go of her, Wally.
Just keep driving.
I'll show you the way.
Just drive toward the light.
Johnny: Walt! Walt! Listen to me! Hey, John, where have you been? Johnny: I've been looking for you.
We gotta get you out of here.
Hell, we'll get out of here as soon as we find those kids.
- Come on.
- Walt! You're making this a lot harder than it needs to be.
You're not his father.
I am his father.
And your father.
And everyone's father.
We've met before, John.
You don't remember? No, I suppose not.
I'm like the dream that slips out of memory when you wake up.
Nobody really wants to remember meeting me.
- You're a figment of his imagination.
- Oh please, let's not get personal here.
Many people report seeing relatives in near-death experiences.
Look it up.
I'm his guide, the one he looks to for advice.
Yeah, bad advice.
You're playing on all his doubts and his fears.
I just give them a face and a voice.
You're the one who created them.
How interesting it must be for you to feel how he feels about Johnny Smith, to put yourself in his place, and feel his misery.
And you always thought you felt like the third wheel.
Well, that's all behind him now.
I don't accept that.
You don't accept that? - As though this were a contest? - Call it anything you like.
Good to see you again, John.
Stay awhile, as long as you'd like.
Walt! Walt: Have you ever seen anything so beautiful, John? Yes.
Come on Niagara Falls the Rockies the Grand Canyon I've seen them all and nothing can touch this.
What about Sarah smiling? The first day you met her at the hospital.
You remember? Yeah.
Careful.
I just got tomato soup with half and half in it.
Yeah, the half and half button sticks.
So, you just gotta kind of clear it.
- Clever.
- It's a start.
Can we agree on one thing? Let's keep this civil.
You don't want him to get upset at a time like this, - neither do I.
- All right, fair enough.
Fair enough.
To be honest, I'm a little surprised that you, of all people, - would be trying to bring him back.
- Nice to know you can be surprised.
The man stole your life away.
He's married to your girl, raising your son as his own.
I'll just go for my coffee.
I'm just trying to do the right thing.
Sometimes the right thing is just to let them go find peace.
I know Walt.
Trust me, he wouldn't like peace.
- What's with the face? - I just met the most beautiful woman.
Oh yeah, she's something all right.
I've seen her here before.
She's got a fella in a coma.
- Oh yeah? - The girl's got baggage, Wally.
Sarah's voice: I got a call for Sarah Bracknell today.
- A wake-up call.
- What are you talking about? Johnny woke up.
Joe: Remember how you felt at that moment, Wally? Like my whole world was coming to an end.
But who could blame her? She loved Johnny her whole life.
She even kept that ring he gave her the night of the accident.
What you got there? Nothing.
It's just an old keepsake.
I don't know what it's doing in here.
Joe: She was lying to you, Wally, and you knew it.
We could talk to each other about everything and suddenly we're avoiding the truth acting like everything's normal while the big pink elephant sits in the middle of the room.
A big pink elephant named Johnny Smith.
Yeah.
Yeah? Walt what about her kiss? Is that worth giving up? Remember just one kiss the touch of her lips.
One kiss.
- How could you pick just one? - The first one.
Sarah's voice: I don't know what I would have done without you.
I've been dreaming about that since the moment I saw you at the coffee machine.
I know.
Human nature is so predictable, - and ultimately so irrelevant.
- Irrelevant? You know, "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
" - And nothing in-between counts? - Not to me.
(Joe sighs) Look at them.
Two lost souls who find themselves in a time of adversity.
Let them go.
Let them go.
A few extra seconds together won't matter.
- Maybe I was wrong about you.
- A lot of people are.
You don't sound like any part of Walt.
I don't think you're a figment of his imagination after all.
Maybe I'm a figment of yours.
Possibilities abound.
Reverend Purdy will have some interesting theories when this is over.
And it has to be over soon, John.
- I think that's up to Walt, isn't it? - All this back and forth you're making him suffer unnecessarily.
I don't want him getting upset.
He has to accept it's his time.
- And who decided that? - He did.
Hours ago.
That's why I came.
He called me, in a manner of speaking.
This would be over already if you hadn't interfered.
I don't think Walt would give up like that.
He's not giving up.
He's being a hero.
He's making the great sacrifice for the woman he loves.
It's what John Wayne would do.
This attempt of yours, it's all very admirable, - but it won't change anything.
- I'll make you a deal.
(chuckles) You can't bargain with death, John.
- A trade.
- You for him? - Why not? - Heroes everywhere I turn! You said we met once before.
- I must be the one who got away.
- Indeed you were.
You just clung and clung and clung to infernal life! - Frankly I just got tired of waiting.
- You don't have to wait anymore.
You're right about that, John.
But I'm not in the trading business.
You see, John the stress on your body right now is far greater than anyone understands.
They don't make machines that can monitor what's happening inside you.
This excursion with Walt, it was a nice opportunity for us to renew our friendship.
That's why I let it continue.
That's why I let you think that you might be able to take Walt with you.
But the truth is, all this time he's been taking you with him.
And now, there's no going back, John.
For either of you.
(frantic beeping) - He's not breathing! - Doctor: What the hell happened? Call a code and get a crash cart! Separate them! I can't.
He needs fluid.
Start a bolus.
Bolus started.
Check him.
- He's still not breathing.
- He doesn't start breathing, we'll need to intubate.
Call respiratory therapy.
Walt! Damn it, where are you? Walt! (children chanting) * Red Rover, Red Rover * * Send Walter right over.
* Johnny: Walt! Walt! Walt! You okay, John? You don't look so good.
I've been looking everywhere for you, Walt.
Out of all the places I've been in my entire life, I think that right here, behind this desk, is my favorite place.
It just makes me feel good.
You know what I mean? Then don't leave it, Walt.
If you love it here, stay here, right behind the real desk.
Nah, my dad's right.
- It's time for me to move on.
- That's not your dad.
What are you talking about? You don't think I know my own dad? Ready, Walt? - (continuous beeping) - He's in v-fib.
Charge paddles to 200.
- Clear? - Clear.
- No change.
- Start CPR.
- (continuous beeping) - He's in v-fib too.
Call another code blue and get a team in here stat.
Well - I guess it's been a pretty good run.
- A great run a great life! So what happens now? I've always wondered.
- I guess we all have, right? - Words can't describe it.
Six of the best years of my life I spent with these guys.
You don't have to leave them, Walt.
Will you listen to me?! They'll be fine, Wally.
You can look in on them now and then.
- Yeah, really? - You're not going far.
Just on the other side of the light.
He's still in v-fib.
Charge paddles to 300.
Clear.
Still no rhythm.
Continue CPR.
He's making this easy for you.
It shouldn't be easy.
It's only been three days, Walt.
Three days! You're ready to move on? - I hung in there for six years! - He's trying to get your goat now.
- I asked you not to upset him.
- You keep saying that.
I just don't want her to have to go through that again.
The pain of not knowing whether I'm dead or alive? No way.
I love her too much to let her go through that.
I think it's better for her and for JJ - if they just get on with their life.
- Well said.
Shall we? Nurse: Clear! Come on, come on.
You're not a bad guy, John.
Maybe I am, Walt.
You know that ring, that keepsake - that Sarah keeps in her jewelry box? - Son, we really have to go now.
I know you gave it to her.
It's okay.
Did you know it's not there anymore? She came over a few weeks ago - to give it back to me.
- Really? - Don't do this.
- It dredged up some serious memories.
- One thing led to another and - And what? - I had sex with your wife.
- You son of a bitch! We've got a rhythm.
Bannerman's pulse is back.
Doctor: Keep working on Johnny.
Yeah.
You couldn't keep your hands off her, could you? Clear! What, do you expect me to forgive you before I die? Who said anything about dying? Doctor: Keep working on Johnny.
He's got a rhythm.
I'm here, Walt.
We got them both back.
Hi, Johnny.
How are you feeling? I'm good.
Thy will be done.
Hi, Walt.
I'm Dr.
Gibson.
You were in an accident.
Do you remember? Yeah.
I remember going after those kids in the mine.
Collier died.
There was a big collapse.
- That's it.
- Do you remember who this is? My wife.
- Hi.
- Hi.
- Are you sure you're ready? - I am so ready.
If I don't get out of here, I'm going to lose it.
I taped the 007 Marathon for you, Dad.
You did? Excellent! Thanks, JJ.
I was worried about that.
Oh man, am I late! Try to keep the ice in the bucket this time, okay? Ha ha.
I'll explain it in the car.
John, you wouldn't believe the dreams I've been having.
- What kind of dreams? - About you and me.
- Oh yeah? - Mm-hmm.
It's not unusual for former coma patients to experience vivid dreams.
Take it from me.
Your mind really plays tricks on you in there, huh? Why don't you come over for dinner, help us drink this champagne? No, I got plans.
But thanks.
We'll save it for you.
(theme music playing) - No no! - Yes yes! You're grounded!
