The Expanse (2015) s03e12 Episode Script

Congregation

1 Previously on "The Expanse" All the ships in this space suddenly decelerated at the same moment and now we're all being pulled toward the sphere - at the center.
- All the ships? Clarisa Mao.
Melba she's trying to kill James Holden.
- [GASPS.]
- [ROARS.]
Holden! Tell me where he is! [SCREAMS.]
The machine got me by the leg.
Our situation here gonna be multiplied 100 fold through the ship.
Cannot afford for lose us both.
[SCREAMS.]
Supplies won't matter much without gravity to heal.
No way for us to make thrust now.
Then we spin the drum.
I have a message for all the ships in this infernal place.
The Behemoth can create spin gravity.
Bring your wounded here so that they may heal.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
[GASPS.]
Holden? I saw something.
A vision.
A vision of what? The end of everything.
[PENSIVE INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC.]
[WOMAN SINGING IN NORWEGIAN.]
[EERIE MUSIC.]
[PAINED GASPS.]
[ELECTRONIC BEEPS.]
[TEETH CLICKS.]
It's not gonna work.
You're being pumped full of blockers.
Why are you here? You were right next to Tilly when the slowdown hit.
You could have saved her.
This isn't your business.
How can you live with that? I've killed better people than Tilly Fagan.
[BLOW LANDS.]
I shouldn't have done that.
I bet it was all her.
The "Seung Un," the fake broadcast, all of it.
She tried to kill us.
I don't give a shit about you.
It was about Holden? Revenge for her father.
I've known people like her.
Keeping her around is not gonna work.
Take her to the "Thomas Prince".
They can lock her up.
I'm not gonna take her to a UN ship.
And you definitely can't handle her alone.
It'd be easier if I put her down.
No! No.
You're not gonna, you're not gonna shoot her, Well, what if I override the auto-doc to do an overdose? - It'll be painless.
- No.
We're not going to kill her.
This one won't be grateful for your mercy.
Well, it's not about her.
It's about us.
I'm still seeing red across the board.
I know.
Just give me a damn second [GASPS.]
Ooh, that seems to have done something at least.
Antennae's up.
Don't get too happy.
We still can't transmit.
Transponder signal's being received.
Least we now know where all the other ships are.
What about Holden? Our scopes were locked on to that station when this whole thing went down.
I think the Roci might have seen something.
Okay.
Yeah I don't think Holden left on his own.
Martian skiff did though.
They must have been at rest when the slowdown happened.
Or at least not going any faster than I can throw a wrench.
Maybe they took Holden with them.
Gotcha.
It's docked at the Behemoth.
If Holden is on that skiff he might be with your old friends now.
[ELECTRONIC BEEPING.]
To any ships in need.
Your injured are welcome on the Behemoth.
We have gravity and Med-Techs to help.
We also welcome your crew.
Especially medical professional.
Any spare medical supplies and food are also greatly Hey, I thought Drummer was running that ship.
She was.
To fleet relief efforts and it will be used to broadcast any additional information as it becomes available.
If we can't send a message then I need to go over there.
See what's happened.
- See if we can find Holden.
- All right.
We'll use our vac suits for the trip.
I'll take Amos and the priest.
Pastor.
Whatever.
Naomi, wait.
You hold the fort till we get back.
Yeah, no.
That ain't gonna work.
- I have to go.
- So do I.
Hey.
I just got my family back.
Whole team then.
Whole team.
I'm Captain Chandra Lucas of the MCRN "Askia.
" I'm coordinating operations inside the Ring space for the Martian survivors.
We're not docked with the "Xuesen" anymore.
And you're new.
I'm afraid your situation has changed.
And probably not for the better.
I already said everything to the other interrogator and like I told him, I want to know where my friends are.
A lot of people have died.
We need to know what happened on that station.
I'm not saying another goddamn word until I know my crew is okay.
[DOOR CLOSES.]
[DOOR OPENS.]
James Holden.
In the flesh.
Ah, I am Klaes Ashford.
I've heard of you.
You're one of Anderson Dawes' scavengers.
Ah, let's try to be civil at least.
If we can.
Tell me what happened on that station? So we're docked with the Behemoth.
I want to talk to Naomi Nagata.
- Not just yet.
- When I find out what happened to my crew, I'll talk.
Bargaining is how civilizations are built.
So you tell me everything I want to know then I put you in touch with your crew.
Fair? I already told everything to the Martians.
It didn't buy me anything.
Well, there's inflexibility to the military mind which I do not share.
It'll all sound insane.
I am not here to judge you.
[SOFT DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
Josephus Miller.
The detective from Ceres.
- He who died on Eros? - He came to me.
Told me to go down to the Station.
What? A dead man came to you and told you to go on? What, you hear voices? What? You actually see this man? Do you want to hear this story or not? My apologies.
Please continue.
Miller took me into the Station.
- Showed me things.
- What sorts of things? Images.
- It's hard to put into words.
- Please try.
It was like seeing a whole civilization all at once.
Billions of them.
Strange, bright minds.
Not human.
Like the ones who sent the protomolecule? The ones who created it.
They made the Station.
This space.
Why would your dead friend show you this? We've had it all wrong about the protomolecule.
It's not a weapon.
It wasn't sent to kill us.
It was just trying to build a road.
Where every single person on Eros died for that road.
It doesn't care about us anymore than we care about anthills we pave over.
And now that it's finished building the Ring.
It's trying to report in.
Re report what? To to whom? It doesn't matter.
Everyone it could talk to is gone.
I don't understand.
Something killed them.
It tried to stop it.
Burned whole solar systems like they were cauterizing a wound.
Only it didn't work.
We are in a graveyard.
We need to get out of this place and never come back.
That man is seeing ghosts.
He's insane.
Captain Lucas.
I'd like to restate my objection to letting the OPA interrogate our prisoner.
Your objection was noted, but our wounded need this ship.
Cooperation is how we survive.
Holden's not insane.
When we were down there on that station it opened the door and protected him.
Whatever this place is I think he's somehow - in contact with it.
- Will he help us escape? I believe he would if he could.
But this thing has its own agenda and it's not on our side.
I don't think it's safe to assume that Holden is either.
So my people will secure a place where he will be locked up and under constant guard.
Fine.
Permission for this team to remain aboard, sir.
They'll be useful here.
All are welcome.
But your weapons are not.
I'm not giving you my armor.
Those are the rules on this ship.
You will abide by them or you are free to leave.
In this messed up alien place, we're all on the same side.
Stand down.
Harari, put their gear in storage.
It will be safe and secure.
Yes sir.
Nice suit.
You need to be in a medical coma.
It'll help the healing process.
The one way I can be even less useful.
[EXHALES SHARPLY.]
I'm fine.
You are not fine.
And if you keep moving you could do permanent damage.
Regrowing a spinal cord is a delicate procedure even under the best circumstances.
My people are dying.
And I'm supposed to lay here and do nothing? Yes, exactly that if you ever want to get better.
Get out.
- Captain, I can't - Get out! [MUTED SOBS.]
[SCREAMS.]
[PAINED GRUNTING.]
[PAINED GASPS.]
[SPEAKING FOREIGN LANGUAGE OVER PA.]
Please make your way to any of the following sectors Commander Kunis, can I have a moment, sir, please? I heard you were going to the Behemoth.
- That's right.
- I'd like to go with you.
You're not critically injured and you're not medical personnel.
- There's no need.
- The need is we're trapped, we're all going to die here, and you're treating symptoms.
Sir I have an idea to get us out of this mess.
The Behemoth was designed as a generation ship.
It needed the capability to send tight-beam messages - over 100 light-years or more.
- What does that have to do It has an extraordinarily powerful communications laser which might be able to punch through the interference at the Ring Gate.
So we could send out a call for help? This isn't magic, it's physics.
It's worth a try.
I'll speak to the captain of the Behemoth.
The MCRN ships are sending medical supplies as fast as they can, but we're as beat up as you are.
Coordinating with the UN is slower.
Their officer corps was hit hard.
Yeah, well, everything you're doing is appreciated.
Thank you, Captain.
- Captain.
- What, Grigori? A lot of our medic, they dead.
More than half we have left are hurt.
We got 100 and 100 who need help.
More than we ever expect.
I'm aware of the situation.
Belter got to work extra hard now for keep Inners alive.
Do you think they do same for us? We're not turning anyone away.
We run out of synthetic blood four hour ago.
Finally, some useful information.
[BEEPS, CHIMES.]
This is your captain.
All second shift personnel report to medical units for mandatory blood donation.
And do it now.
We go.
You not have to do it.
I bleed as well as anyone.
Doesn't seem right.
So many dead or messed up but not this guy.
Or you.
Or me.
Level Three, section 12, corridor 50.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
- How many died.
- What, keeping count? - Don't talk to the prisoner.
- You protecting him, Gunny? - I didn't - You shut up too.
We're taking him to the brig as ordered.
Now everyone just shut the frig up.
Attention: Dock four sealed now.
Dock four is sealed now.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER.]
Is all you brought? Yeah, that's all we had, kid.
Who the dark hair with the bad look? You need to lock her up.
She's killed a lot of people.
We put a chemical restraint on her.
- She can't take it off.
- Yeah, yeah, we on it.
Is Holden on this ship? Listen, little shit.
I want to talk to Drummer.
Captain Ashford boss man now.
We hold on your weapon when you on board.
Well, that's not going to happen.
- It's the rule.
- So? Amos.
Please.
- No.
- Please.
I know them.
Okay.
All this gear to the triage units.
You can go too.
See the doctors, help them out.
We're not going anywhere until you tell me what happened to Drummer.
No, you coming with me.
You deserter.
You under arrest.
Okay, I'm gonna need that gun back.
It's all right.
I was expecting this.
I will get us some answers.
This way.
Nagata.
Your lapdog told me I was under arrest.
Yeah, well, Harari correctly judged that I might want a word with you if you came back.
What happened to Drummer.
She was injured.
And she's recovering from surgery.
She saved my life.
And I saved hers.
You were expecting mutiny.
Where's Holden? Did the Martians bring him here? Yeah, they did, but he's no condition to entertain visitors.
I believe whatever happened on that station damaged his mind, but we're caring for him.
I want to see him.
Our problems with the grid have persisted.
One of these times it's going to go down and it won't come back up again.
I didn't come here to fix your ship.
And whenever that happens everyone on this ship will asphyxiate in the dark.
And that includes your crew.
James Holden and Drummer.
Well, all of us.
I'll come up with a plan to stabilize the grid and put together teams to implement the repairs.
Good.
Then, I'm going to see my friends.
Aye, you might as well get on with it.
Oi.
One time you out line.
Two in the head, sasa ke? Hey.
I'm Jim.
What are you in for? [LAUGHING.]
[DARK MUSIC.]
And ever since Ashford assumed command, security on the Behemoth has increased dramatically.
Throughout the ship, technical crews are making modifications to the power grid, but no one will explain what those modifications are for We have something we need you to do.
Whatever it is, the answer is no.
Why do you guys have guns? The armory was on the way.
Where's Cohen? We're gonna need a tech.
Cohen is dead.
Cut in half walking through a door on the Xuesen, because of you.
I understand you're upset You go to hell.
Give me my camera back, - I have work to do - You're pissed, I get it.
You want me to feel bad that you're angry.
You want me to feel guilty that Cohen is dead.
But I don't.
And I never will, so let's just skip the bullshit, to where you agree to help.
- Help you do what? - The station is going to destroy us.
All of us.
Holden knows how to stop it.
You want answers.
We have them.
And they will save lives.
We need you to get the word out.
[SOMBER MUSIC.]
Should have led with that.
I need you to keep everyone out of reactor control.
Do you have anyone down there you can trust? Yes, Captain.
I know a couple guy.
[PHONE BEEPING.]
No plan survives contact with the enemy.
I'm sorry I drove you away.
We lost so much time together.
You didn't drive me away.
And I'm not leaving again.
[MELANCHOLY MUSIC.]
Together till the end.
[ENGINES POWERING DOWN.]
Just you? Only me wit duty back here, Bosmang.
Reactor control's straight through there.
How long's it take to kill the reactor? Minimum safe shutdown, about twenty minutes.
After that, I can take the power grid offline any time we want.
[DEVICE BEEPS.]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
[INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER.]
[CHATTER CONTINUES.]
Get away from the controls, now! [TENSE MUSIC.]
This is it.
Can you uplink here? I think so.
Give me a minute.
- Alex.
- Yeah.
Help her.
I'll watch our backs.
All right.
All right.
Let's get this thing connected.
[INDISTINCT WHISPERING.]
What do you think that Ashford will do when he realizes what we're doing? He's a pirate.
Take a guess.
Before, you had a problem with me killing Melba.
I don't have time for that now.
If someone comes to stop us, I'm gonna kill them.
Because it needs to be done.
It does.
Hmm.
Do you think we're gonna die here? Well, there's a lot more of them than there is us.
Hmm.
I, um I left a lot of people behind, to come out here.
If we die, I won't get a chance to explain to them why I left.
What I thought that I would gain.
I left a lot unsaid.
Well, everyone leaves unfinished business.
That's what dying is.
[DARK MUSIC.]
What about you? I won't get to shoot that prick, Ashford.
Why do you hate him? I never met him.
You'd regret not killing a man you don't even know, just because he's on - the other side? - Well, he's sending people to kill me.
On every side of this are people who have no reason to hate each other.
Everyone here thinks they're doing the right thing.
Everyone there thinks they're doing the right thing.
If we get out of this, we have to find a way to understand each other, to explain why we made the choices that we did.
It is the only way that we can let go of the hate.
[BREATHING SHAKILY.]
Hate is a burden.
You don't have to carry it with you.
I'm not gonna let anyone hurt you.
They're linking in to the transmitter array now.
Broadcast should be up soon.
As soon as the other ships go dark, we need to pull the plug here.
We'll be ready.
[BREATHING HEAVILY.]
How are you holding up? [TENSE MUSIC.]
Thank you for believing me.
I'm not here for you.
Naomi believes you're right.
She would die for you.
I'm here to make sure she doesn't.
You, here.
You, here.
You, with power certification, over there.
You there, suit up.
You go outside.
Reactor control, come in.
- Faluta! - What's the problem? Getting alert on all reactor.
Look like someone preparing for shut-down sequence! - On whose orders? - Mi na sasa.
I call control room.
No answer.
Harari! They are in reactor control.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
[BEEPING.]
What the felota is this? Problem? Someone's routing massive amounts of power - to the Comm Laser.
- They tried to get a message through the Ring before.
Maybe they're trying to punch through harder.
With the station charging up, what'll be the point of They're trying to destroy the Ring.
- Would that work, ke? - It won't matter.
A laser shot is a direct attack; it'll prove that we're a threat.
And the station will kill everyone and everything on both sides of the Ring.
Ashford! We know what you're trying to do.
You cannot destroy the Ring! You are no longer in command of this ship.
You don't need to do this.
There's a way to save us all! That is not the point.
Even if the station doesn't kill all of us, now others will come through the Ring.
That is our nature.
We won't be able to resist.
Anybody who has had a child understands that it is their duty to leave the world better than they found it.
Even if we all survive, we're leaving behind an unexploded bomb.
Sooner or later, someone will set it off.
If Holden is right, you will be the one setting it off.
Camina, you are a true Belter.
You saved my life because you are willing to die for a greater good.
I still am.
Hurry.
Get back to work.
[BEEPING.]
- Are we up yet? Almost there, almost there.
This is Monica Stewart, reporting on the Intership Relief Channel, with an urgent message for everyone in the flotilla.
I am here with Anna Volovodov.
Some of you may recognize her.
She was instrumental in exposing UN Undersecretary Errinwright's treason and helped end the war.
Please listen to what she has to say.
Our lives are depending on it.
I understand how you all must be feeling right now.
You're afraid.
The station is doing something that you don't understand.
And no one will answer your questions.
But I will.
The Station is reacting as though we are a threat.
It thinks our ships are bombs, like the skiff that exploded.
And it is charging up to protect itself.
But we can stop it.
We need to power down every reactor, on every ship.
This will demonstrate that we are not a threat.
And the Station will let us go.
This is the time I told you to shut down - that transmission! - No can do, Bosmang.
They must be hooked directly into substation.
I mute the feed.
Is what she's saying true? No have time to debate.
If there a chance, I say we try.
We not gonna die here.
I said [DARK MUSIC.]
We are running out of time, people.
If we delay, we lose our chance to end this threat against all of our families, against all of our homes.
We know what we must do.
Now.
Does anyone else wish to debate with me? That broadcast will make things get out of hand quickly.
My Marines will take care of it.
Draper, you're up.
Get your armor.
Those freaking thieving Belters.
We don't need armor for this.
Take what you need and head out.
Aye-aye, Gunny.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
[ARMOR WHIRRING.]
How much longer? I've set the reactor to scram as soon as the power grid goes down.
It'll take a while for the broadcast to convince every [JET PACK HISSING.]
[GRUNTS.]
- Airlock! [GRUNTS.]
[BEEPING.]
Felota! Where does this go? Exterior elevator.
Connects directly to the Command deck.
[GRUNTS.]
Shit! They killed the power! If we can make our way up the shaft, maybe we can still stop Ashford.
Can you keep going? Pashang fong.
You're not leaving me behind.
Suit up! We tune comm laser to visible range.
When your flash it, send Belter tap code.
Good idea.
Yeah, we get those sometime, Earther.
Charge complete.
Comm laser firing now.
[SOFT DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
Beam not strong enough.
Not getting through the distortion.
All it do is heat up Ring a couple of degree.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER AND GROANING.]
Here.
Damn.
You ever think you'd see anything like this? Inners and Belters, side by side, helping each other.
Peace in our time? All it took was everybody about to die.
Yeah [BEEPING.]
This is Monica Stuart reporting from the Intership Relief Channel.
A new shipment See, they made it.
Including much needed electrical parts, has just been received from the UNN "Thomas Prince.
" Captain Ashford asks that anyone with engineering experience contact his staff Blah, blah, blah.
What's wrong with you? That's a good idea.
The ship.
The medical group reports I've got to get me something to eat.
You coming? I'll catch up.
[GRUNTS.]
- Thank you.
- You're welcome.
Good.
Okay.
- Hey.
- Are you a doctor? I was a nurse.
Before I was a minister.
I run a clinic in St.
Petersburg for the undocumented.
Those are people who aren't on Basic.
Yeah, I know people like that.
Yeah.
Why do you do it? Uh, because it needs to be done.
I think that's what most of my life is.
Seeing what needs to be done and trying to do it.
Mine too.
Yeah.
What, you never saw anyone who got hurt before? They said you were injured, but I didn't How are you? Back aches pretty bad right down to the spot where I can't feel anything at all.
- I'm so sorry - Don't.
Ashford knows you're back? I've spent the last several hours making repairs to the ship's power grid.
I bet he love putting you back to work.
I sort of need a favor.
This is the wrong kind of power pack assembly.
Favor? Holden is here.
Whatever happened to him on that station, it has to be connected with everything happening now.
If I could just talk with him, then maybe he can help.
And I thought you come to check on me.
Of course I did.
I can make this work.
I'm glad you're back.
[MECHANICAL WHIR.]
[MECHANICAL THRUM.]
That did it.
Thank you.
You think he can help get us out of this? I don't know.
I hope so.
Well, you help me finish this.
And I'll walk you down there.
[SOFT DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
I found something interesting and three other ships confirm my data.
There's a pattern of decreased virtual particle activity between us and that station.
I don't know what that means.
- On a quantum level it means - Oh, please, just tell me what you want from me.
I want to send a skiff between us and the Station with a nuclear warhead or overloaded reactor.
I want to create a very high energy radioactive burst.
The last time something blew up near the Station, it disassembled a Martian Marine.
It would seem like a dangerous thing to do.
The field that's trapping us here will contain the explosion.
There's no danger to us or the Station but the high energy photons it generates, I think it might interfere with what's stopping us.
Would that help to free us? Honestly, I don't know.
The data we'd get would tell us more about the field that's trapping us here.
At least it's a start.
We have a limited number of skiffs That's why I'm asking you, Captain Ashford.
There must be something on the Behemoth we can use.
Something damaged.
It wouldn't have to move far.
Doctor, you are out of line.
Hey, we need answers.
Right? And this at least seems like a plan to find some.
We'll locate something you can use.
Thank you.
You're taking a hell of a risk.
Well, I would say the situation calls for it.
Hey, it's going to be okay.
Doc, this here's Samuel.
He really needs some painkillers.
If you find some, go ahead.
I don't have any left.
Find some? What do you mean? Doc? Would you tell me where to look Hang tight, Samuel.
I'll be right back.
Where'd Alex go? Shit, I was going to ask him where the galley was.
I'm gonna scare up some food.
You want any? I'm gonna be here for a while.
You know he's dead, right? I do.
And you're still trying to help him? No.
I'm just taking a moment with him.
I'll bring you some food.
Did you ever think it would come to this? To what? We spend our lives cutting Inners' throats before they cut ours and now here we are trying to save them.
- Does seem odd, doesn't it? - Yeah.
Keep an eye on them all the same.
I get the idea you're trying to tell me something.
Some supplies are thinner than the inventory.
Someone could be stealing.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER AND LAUGHTER.]
We are done here.
Oi, boss man.
You got to hear this story she tell me.
Lieutenant Diogo Harari, - OPA.
- What I do? Who did I put in charge of security - for emergency supplies? - Me, boss man.
Yeah.
Have any supplies gone missing? - I don't know.
- It's a simple question.
- I don't know - Are there missing supplies? - I don't know! - Then who the hell would? Beltalowda.
Eyes and ears.
We are trapped in the Black and fighting for our lives.
So make no mistake.
Everything we do here is to buy one more chance to live.
One more breath! So do your faloting job or I will space you myself.
I stretched the truth.
I told them I was your minister.
You came to the wrong place.
I don't want to talk about that.
- About what? - God.
Love.
Forgiveness.
I don't want to talk about any of that either.
I don't actually want to talk.
Really.
Just wanted to be here for a minute.
I thought it might help me.
I don't want to help you.
You didn't want to help Tilly either.
It's funny, isn't it? All the people you killed and I'm hung up on the one that you just couldn't be bothered to save.
I thought if I came here and I looked you in the eyes Maybe I could see you as a person.
- Why do you care.
- I don't.
That's what's strange.
I try to care about everyone.
It's exhausting.
When Amos offered to kill you I wanted to let him.
Why didn't you? I keep looking for a way to care about you.
I think "her father was a terrible person.
"But a lot of people have terrible parents.
"And "I think, well, she's clearly a damaged "person, but then who isn't?" So, I'm down to "maybe she has a brain tumor?" Do you have a brain tumor? No.
It wasn't mercy.
Um it was vanity.
I didn't want to think of myself as someone who wanted vengeance.
Are you asking for my forgiveness? No.
You're a coward.
You should have let him kill me.
You don't get the easy way out.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
- You're almost in position.
- Good.
Messed up skiff fly like garbage scow.
- And the bomb? - Ready for remote detonation.
Okay, that's far enough.
Do it.
That that definitely did something.
We still not move.
But the pattern's changed.
The added energy definitely had an effect.
It'll take time to analyze all this.
All we got in time, us.
Blew up a damn nuke.
Alien they not even notice.
Captain.
- Egan.
- Good to see you on your feet.
Good to see you again, too.
Open the door.
Sorry, boss man, no can do.
Me not suppose to leave this one alone.
He won't be alone.
[SOFT DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
[SIGHS.]
They let me call the Roci.
No one answered.
I got the boys off the ship.
Everyone's okay.
They're here now.
I was afraid I got you all killed.
You didn't.
I don't believe what's happening is your fault.
They won't tell me anything.
It's obviously bad.
The speed limit changed.
I'm just happy you're here.
I never should have left.
I did come for a reason.
If you're going to ask me how to fix all this, I'm completely lost.
The boys said you were talking to Miller? I saw him.
As real as you right now.
He warned me about the speed limit.
Saved our lives when the Behemoth fired at us.
I tried to stop that.
He told me to go to the Station.
I saw terrible things.
Saw the beings who built the Ring.
What happened to them.
All of it happening in my head.
I couldn't shut it out.
That's over now.
All of it has to mean something.
Otherwise all these people have died for nothing.
What is Miller telling you now? Hasn't been back since I left the Station.
I mean I haven't had a lot of time alone.
- But still nothing.
- Good.
You're not responsible for this.
Yes, I am.
It's talking to me.
Not talking to anyone else.
I wish it would, but it's not.
I have to figure out what it wants.
I'm the only one who can.
This is going to destroy you.
It doesn't matter.
I have to fix it.
It appears the detonation of the skiff changed the behavior of the Station.
Yeah, well, that was the point of the exercise, right? But it didn't affect the behavior of the field holding us here.
The Station is now generating magnetic pulses like a like a railgun charging up, only on a massive scale.
The pulses are focused toward the Ring Gate.
They burned whole solar systems like they were trying to cauterize a wound.
What was that? Ah, nothing, just something a madman told me once.
Do we know how long this will last? The pulses are increasing in frequency and amplitude.
I estimate less than seven hours before it becomes a continuous signal.
Whatever's gonna happen it'll happen then.
[PEOPLE COUGHING.]
So that's the official report.
The skiff detonation was intentional.
Part of some science project.
But there is still no official comment on the new activity coming from the Station.
I have reached out to sources at the UNN, MCRN, and OPA and they all say the same thing.
Stay calm, be patient while we analyze the data.
But an anonymous source has told me that the magnetic activity coming from the Station is increasing and seems to be affecting the Ring Gate as well.
We came into this place thinking we understood the rules and then the rules changed and a lot of people died.
Now the rules are changing again.
We have been told to remain calm.
Fine.
We don't really have any other choice.
But there are a lot of frightened people in here with me and I hope that the answers are coming soon.
This is Monica Stuart on the Behemoth.
What do you think that means? I have no idea.
We kicked the hornet's nest and now we know for sure that there are hornets inside.
Freezing all of our ships wasn't enough proof for you? Proof that the Station would protect itself, yes, but proof that it was a threat to the lives of everyone who entered this space? No.
But now, yes.
Holden told me that on the Station he saw a vision of Rings being used to burn entire solar systems to ash.
He believed that the Station did this to stop a threat.
When we detonated our bomb I believe we became the threat.
And not just our ships, but everyone.
All humanity.
On both sides of the Ring.
Jesus Christ.
No, I'm glad we set off the bomb.
It showed us what the Station truly is, and we still have time to act.
What are you proposing? One of your marines destroyed a piece of the Station before it killed him.
So we now know it can be damaged.
You want to try to blow it up? We got a lot of nukes left we could ferry down Yeah, yeah, that's that's an interesting idea, but during such an attack our solar system would still be connected to this place through the Ring.
And that is the means by which this Station can still threaten us.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
That Ring is our only way home.
It'd take months for a skiff to ferry bombs up there.
When you go outside you still see, right? Photons still travel at the speed of light in here.
They are not affected by the speed limit.
So a laser then? The Behemoth's comm laser is the most powerful ever built.
And I propose we make it even more so and use it to slice through the Ring and destroy it and cut the Station off from our homes.
And to trap us all here forever.
No one on the other side would ever know what we did.
And we will have to say to human race.
Not a bad way to die.
[ETHEREAL MUSIC.]
You owe me.
I did what you asked.
I did everything you asked.
Now I need you, Miller.
If you're ever coming back, this would be a good time.
I still don't understand what you see in him.
Come on, Miller, talk to me.
Please.
[INAUDIBLE RADIO DIALOGUE.]
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
Muster all the MPs on the dock, I'll be there shortly.
Grigori.
I need a power grid status report.
And get Nagata up here, now.
Yes, Captain.
Gunny.
- Reporting as ordered.
- With me.
We're gonna need a tactical plan for command deck security and crowd control - throughout the Behemoth.
- Has there been - a credible threat? - Call it a contingency.
Get me a list of personnel and equipment you'll need, and be prepared to deploy within the hour.
Sir? It would help to know what we're defending against.
Can I count on you? Yes, sir.
It's about God damned time.
What the hell's going on with the station? Is this my fault? Did you get me to arm a bomb? How would I know why they did that? I've been locked up since the last time I saw you.
"Bunch of blade boys humping shank.
" What does that even mean? Okay.
That sounds bad.
So how do we do that? Uh-huh.
Okay.
Right.
I know how to fix this.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER.]
Ashford.
It's Drummer.
Camina.
It's good to hear your voice.
It's good to still have one.
I was just going to come to see you.
I've been talking to Holden.
He says he knows how to get us out of this mess.
Ah, you're with Holden.
Last time I saw, you couldn't even walk.
Yes, Naomi helped with that.
Ah, Nagata is there as well.
Where are you? In the Brig? Drummer is still the captain of the ship.
Yes.
What is Holden telling you to do? He believes he can convince the station that we are not a threat.
The station killed thousands of us for no reason.
We are not the threat, here.
But maybe Holden is.
We should talk in person.
I agree.
I'll be right there.
[INTERCOM BEEPS.]
Bring them to me.
And do not let anyone stop you.
Ya, Bosmang.
Eagan.
- Give me your weapon.
- Sure, Bosmang.
Ashford's coming for us.
He will not let us do this.
We can tie you up if you want.
No one will know you helped us.
Na need.
Mi with you.
Eros, Ganymede.
Im Belta, oso.
The station's deciding whether we're a threat.
So what happens if it decides we are? I saw it turn a Marine who threw a grenade into red mist, I'm guessing something like that.
Only, you know, all of us.
So, did Miller give you any idea how not to be red mist? If we get the station not to consider us a threat, he can get it to stand down.
So how do we stop looking like one? When we overloaded the reactor on that skiff, we taught the station that our ships are fusion bombs.
We need to shut down every reactor in the flotilla.
- Oh, is that all? - Or we can wait for it to decide if we're safer as red mist.
- What do you need from us? - Go find Monica Stuart and Cohen, and tell them everything I'm telling you.
They can use the Intership Relief Channel to get the message out.
The moment you start to broadcast, Ashford will try to stop it.
I'm sending you directions to a substation, where you can tap directly into the Behemoth's transmitter array.
They won't be able to cut you off there.
The second we tap in, they'll know exactly where we are.
- There's no way to hide that.
- I know.
He will send people after you.
- We're gonna need some guns.
- I'll send you access codes to the security locker on your level.
Look Telling a whole bunch of scared people to turn the lights off, here, That that's gonna be a tough sale.
Well, you're just gonna have to figure out how to convince them.
We'll have enough trouble of our own shutting down the Behemoth.
Even given the circumstances, it's nice to have you back.
Good huntin', Cap.
You too.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER.]
[INAUDIBLE.]
[MAN COUGHING.]
We're gonna need you to come with us.
My patients need me here.
Nothing you're doing here matters.
- I disagree.
- Unless we can convince a whole lot of people to do something they're not gonna want to do, everybody's going to die.
[INTERCOM BEEPING.]
- Captain.
Holden gone from da brig.
With Drummer and Nagata.
No one know where they go.
Find them! Me on it, Bosmang.
You can count on me.
[ELECTRICITY ZAPPING.]
He needs a medic! How much time did that just cost us? Too much work, not enough worker.
People go too fast, make mistake, and get hurt! Then get more people who know what they are doing - up here now.
- Bosmang, we running primary power direct from reactor to Comm Laser.
Is it really about getting signal out? No.
That station killed a lot of us, and they are trying to kill more.
It's time we fight back.
I get more people.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
[BROADCAST PLAYING INDISTINCTLY.]
I feel like we're trapped in a haunted house.
And I'm asking you to turn out the lights.
This is a dark time.
I'm asking you to be brave with me.
I understand it is a I So much for no weapons on the Behemoth.
This is Gunnery Sergeant Roberta Draper, Martian Marine Corps! I am ordering you to cease your broadcast, put down your weapons, and come out with your hands raised! Bobbie? Alex? Jesus.
[INDISTINCT RADIO CHATTER.]
I want full control of the Comm Laser at my station, ke? Ya, Bosmang.
Protocol breach, respond.
[GASPS.]
This is a live cable.
Keep it secure.
Sorry.
- Are you all right? - It's the chemical restraint, makes me a little fuzzy.
Oh, you you are who tried to kill Holden.
You were in the brig, right? What are you doing here? They brought me up.
I have an electrician rating.
If I remove the restraint, would it help you concentrate better? Do you think a truly good act at the end of your life, can make up for the terrible things you've done? I would like to believe that is true.
Yeah.
At least I hope it is.
[SOMBER MUSIC.]
What the hell are you doing down here? Put down your weapons.
That ain't gonna happen.
Anna, keep talking, tell them how you feel right now.
I I understand, what it is to fight for something.
I have done a lot of it.
But I've also seen how it can turn into blind hatred.
Alex, listen to me! You need to surrender now! If you make us come in there, somebody's gonna get hurt! [ANNA SPEAKING INDISTINCTLY.]
- Okay! - Don't you do it.
I'm putting my guns down! Coming out now! I just wanna talk! - All right! - This is a stall.
What is it with you and these assholes? I don't care that she's your friend.
If she tries to stop us, I'm putting her down.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
I'm scared too.
But I am trying, to not let my fear [INDISTINCT.]
I don't want to hurt you.
- Don't make me.
- Actually, I'm here to keep Angus from hurting you.
Your broadcast is causing a panic, - it has to stop.
- Yeah, that's not gonna happen, Gunny.
Holden says, that station is gonna wipe us all out unless we make this happen now.
I was with him, in that thing.
It did something to him.
I'm not even sure it's the Holden you know - that came back.
- He's running around, putting his life on the line, trying to save everyone.
That's the Holden I know.
Take 'em out! [GRUNTS.]
Stand down! God damn it, stand down! [ALL GRUNTING.]
[TENSE MUSIC.]
Don't shoot! Alex? I'm good.
I'm good.
How many more? Clear.
[GRUNTS.]
Shit.
Put the guns down here.
[GRUNTING, PANTING.]
Gunny, you okay? Gunny, she's hit! They'll be sending a lot more people, so whatever you've got to do, do it fast.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
What are you doing? Don't stop, we'll catch up.
[DEVICE BEEPING.]
There's no way we stay ahead of those suits.
You keep going.
I can handle Diogo Harari.
No, you can't.
Give me the grenades.
I'm sorry I tried to kill you.
- There's no need - Tell Naomi I said that.
I will.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
What's going on? Drummer? [DEVICE BEEPING.]
We still have a chance, but we have to do it together.
[PANICKED CHATTER.]
The worst minds show us who we are.
Doctor, this is not the time.
Commander, please listen.
I feel like it's our fault.
My fault.
And if Ashford's right, it won't make any difference if we shut down the Prince.
But if he's wrong, shouldn't we at least try? [DEVICE BEEPING.]
Ah! [GASPS.]
Drummer? Drummer! Please tell me I didn't hit you too.
[CHUCKLING.]
Now I know why you don't need to carry a gun.
Oh, that's a pretty good trick.
[BREATHING HEAVILY.]
Are you okay? Eh, I'll live.
I think you better go on without me.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
Captain! Thomas Prince just go dark.
All reactor off.
Other ships too.
Where's my god damned laser? Almost there, just gotta check the buffer.
- Buffer is good.
- Laser control to me.
- Lock target.
- Ya, Bosmang.
Comm Laser charging.
- Ready.
- Firing.
[WHIRRING.]
- What happened? - We missed.
- Laser was misaligned.
- How? Damage from slowdown, maybe? Compensating.
We need to fire again! Now! We're running out of time, keep talking.
Keep talking.
I'm I'm not sure how much longer we're going to be able to keep this going.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
Do we have a target lock on the Ring, yet? Almost there! I love you.
We're unarmed! Don't shoot! We're coming out! [RING HUMMING.]
[ENGINES POWERING DOWN.]
I know.
You're trying to save lives.
I am too! But we're on the brink right now, because we keep reacting to things we don't understand! We're scared, we're hurt, and we're reaching for violence because we can't figure out what to do.
But just this once, can't we try something else? Ashford, you know me! I stopped following fanatics a long time ago.
Shoot them.
[YELLS.]
[SCREAMS.]
[TENSE MUSIC.]
[AUDIO FADES.]
[ETHEREAL MUSIC.]
[TRIUMPHANT MUSIC.]
I guess it worked.
You haven't been straight with me, Miller.
There's something you're not telling me.
Oh, really? After all the pain and death, you just flip a switch, and we're free to go.
Just like that.
Nice try.
I think you were trying to open the Ring gates from the beginning.
That was the plan.
And what I want to know now is, are we I mean humanity are we part of that plan? I don't believe you did it out of the goodness of your heart.
It was never about helping us.
We know all of our divisions.
All of our hatreds.
They didn't just magically disappear the moment you set us free.
You've given us a new frontier.
1,300 habitable systems on the other side of those Rings.
You know we're gonna go.
We won't be able to resist.
It's gonna be another blood-soaked gold rush.
Am I scared? Yeah, you're god damn right I'm scared.
And I think you know why.
When you connected me to the Station, I saw something.
The civilization that built the Rings is gone.
Wiped out.
What could have killed them? That's what I'd like to know.
Gonna need a ride.
