And my dog made something for you, too.
Oh, thank you.
It's right here.
[ laughter .]
Welcome back.
Daly: As our coaches head to their chairs At universal studios hollywood Let's meet the first artist of the season.
I'm mark hood, i'm 24, and i'm from chicago, illinois.
I got a lot of energy.
I'm crazy, i'm goofy, but i got a big heart.
And i think it's because of my parents.
They are my biggest fans now.
[ chuckles .]
Wasn't always that way.
How long have you been singing? I've been singing since i was a kid.
You know, started in the church.
Dad's a pastor.
Okay.
Mom taught choir at church.
There wasn't any listening to secular music.
One time, i was sneaking, listening to an usher cd, "confessions" -- best album ever.
Man, she came in my room.
"what is this you're listening to?" Snatches cd out of my cd player and cracks it up [ laughs .]
And just drops the mike and walks out.
It's a good thing usher's taking a little time off right now.
Okay? [ laughter .]
Thank you.
At 10, you shouldn't be talking about baby I hear you.
Amen.
Or the other things That some of the artists were singing.
It wasn't the music.
It was the message.
Yes, ma'am.
Preach on.
[ laughs .]
Mark: I'm 14 years old.
Then my mom drops a bomb on me.
"you're going to chicago high school For agricultural sciences, which is on a 100-acre farm.
" Why would you do that to me, ma? I visited there for a conference, And the children were so polite.
I said, "this is where mark should go.
" What?! I'm picking corn.
I got classes in a greenhouse.
I stink.
There's chickens running all over the place.
I don't even like animals.
I'm scared of dogs.
There was no real art program, But they had to give you a music class, And that really gave me the opportunity to shine.
I got to really find my love for the stage.
Coming right out of high school, i started in community theater.
I was able to transition to tv.
I played a dead guy on a show before, And i had to audition to play dead.
Like, it was a whole -- i beat out other guys to play dead.
We was all laid out in the middle of the floor, And they chose me.
I was the chosen dead guy.
Even though i get roles, i'm still a starving artist.
I love "the voice.
" i remember the first season.
If i could work with one coach, my coach would be blake shelton.
Nobody would expect it, And he would push me and challenge me.
I could not sleep last night.
I was just up every hour, every hour.
I finally feel like this is my chance.
"the voice," this performance, It's the end all, it's the be all.
It's go time.
[ chuckles .]
come on.
Get it done.
I love you guys so much.
I'm so happy you're back.
I'm excited.
Are we doing this right now? Hey, good luck, blake.
I can already tell this is a good one.
hey baby, baby my frie-e-nds all they want to do is use me yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah hey, hey, but my answer whoa, whoa is yeah to all that use me stuff [ squealing .]
hey, whoo, yeah listen, baby, whoa i-i-i-i i wanna spread the news that if it feels this good getting used oh, you just keep on using me mm, yeah until you use me up hey, y-you, y-you, y-you, y-you until you use me up hey, baby you just use me up unh, oh, but, oh, baby baby, baby, baby when you love me, i can't get enough no n-n-no, no-no, no-no, no i want to spread the news that if it feels this good getting used oh, you just keep on using me [ squeals .]
yeah, yeah-yeah-yeah, yeah until you use me up hey, baby, you y-y-y-y-y-y-y-ou until you use me up hey, baby, you're just using me up [ cheers and applause .]
What?! What?! Awesome, awesome! [ cheers and applause continue .]
What?! Standing?! What?! It's real! It's real! Four chairs? It's real! What's your name, man? I'm mark hood from chicago.
I'm 24.
What you do is extremely remarkable.
I love your infectious energy.
You high-fived the stage.
[ laughs .]
[ laughter .]
like, i want that on my team.
Give me some of that, please.
[ cheers and applause .]
oh, my god! You're the first of this season for me, So it was incredible.
I was like, "this is undeniable.
This guy -- there's something About the way he's singing this song Where i believe him.
" I'm in the middle of writing a record.
To be around someone with that kind of energy And that kind of love for life Is, like, perfect for me right now.
It's very selfish.
It is extremely selfish.
It's very selfish, But i also -- I have a lot of experience with all kinds of music, And i think we could have a lot of fun together.
[ applause .]
Oh, my god.
Dude, those runs with those incredible jazz notes -- Those runs were crazy.
Sometimes that can get to be too much.
You sold it, and when we turned around, You gave us even more.
I'd be honored to have you on my team.
Man, we'd just have so much fun picking songs.
I'd have a great time working with you, mark.
[ cheers and applause .]
blake: How you doing, buddy? Hey, blake.
You made me real happy.
Mm! I mean, he's like a little boy standing up there right now.
He's so excited.
I guarantee, when mark was k, st! Shut up! Sit down! What are you?!" still.
Still.
That's right.
How'd you know? Still.
Yeah, still to this day, right? They're watching now, saying, "yes, that's right.
" [ laughs .]
that's right.
[ laughter .]
And that's why i think you're gonna do so great on this show, And you were dancing around like a freak of nature.
[ laughter .]
normally, we would be like, "man, don't do that at a blind audition," But you're such a good singer with so much control That you made that work, dude.
[ cheers and applause .]
i'm so glad you're here, man.
Adam: And, also, i'm the most like a child Of anybody on this panel.
Gwen: [ laughs .]
That is true.
I am the most childish person.
I'm the most like a mother.
I can really help guide you.
[ laughter .]
you know? Pharrell: I-i just have a question.
Like, what kind of music do you want to sing? R&b, pop, Kind of like john legend meets pharrell almost.
[ cheers and applause .]
Aw, man.
[ laughter .]
Oh! [ laughs .]
[ cheers and applause .]
I want to be like pharrell, too, man.
So, pharrell looks super cool in it, And blake looks like the captain of "the love boat" in it.
Gwen: [ laughing .]
you are [ laughter .]
I have to say, blake, you look super cute in that.
Thank you.
No, he doesn't.
He looks like the fisherman from "jaws.
" [ laughter .]
Pharrell: Hey, dude, it's time to decide.
Who do you pick as your coach? [ dramatic music plays .]
um Oh, please! Help me, holy ghost.
Please! [ audience shouting .]
I [ dramatic music continues .]
Please.
oh Whoo! Did you hear that? Did you hear that?! I pick pharrell! [ cheers and applause .]
oh, man! Yes! [ cheering .]
[ laughs .]
Pharrell.
Thank you! I can't believe this, man! I'm on "the voice" on team pharrell, Team skateboard "p"! Wo-o-o-o-w! One of my favorite pharrell songs is "frontin'.
" and we locked eyes That's my joint, man, and then the "despicable me" soundtrack, And he's the artist/producer, and he was like -- Nothing without that voice.
[ chuckles .]
what? Oh, my -- pharrell.
I have been saying, "i want blake, I want blake, i want blake.
" There was a difference when we locked eyes.
we locked eyes [ laughs .]
i'm -- i'm just in -- Where my altoids? They were supposed to have them over here.
I'm sorry.
[ laughs .]
This excitement is crazy.
[ laughs .]
Yo, bro, listen to me.
You could be an inspiration to so many people.
Pharrell: Mark hood is a delight.
He has a super-soulful voice.
I'm grateful that he picked me.
I look forward to working with him on my team.
Put that on again.
Let me see, let me see, let me see.
One more time.
You literally look -- it actually works on him, though.
No, it doesn't.
No, don't ever say that.
I actually think it looks cute on him.
Yeah, that's two against one.
You look like -- you look like cap'n crunch.
[ laughs .]
Blake: You know, sometimes when you're desperate, You will stop at nothing.
I felt like, man, i got to show this guy That i'm a pharrell fan, too.
Stupid hat! And it backfired.
I think i broke a rib laughing.
I'm laughing constantly.
My sides hurt.
You guys are awesome.

[ chuckles .]
He just put the dagger in and twisted it.
Daly: And later, play along with our coaches For the most surprising blind audition they have ever seen.
Pharrell: What makes it super cool, All of that individuality standing onstage right now.
That was the trippiest turn around, blind audition, Freakiest thing i've ever experienced in my life.
this is "the voice" Daly: Welcome back to night 1 of the blind auditions.
I'm on my way to hollywood, california, To meet up with kota wade.
She and her parents own and run a music venue called amplyfi, Where she's been busy honing her skills, Getting ready for her big blind audition On "the voice" stage.
We opened amplyfi about five years ago.
My dad, between the two of us, we cover the sound.
Check mike two.
Okay, we're good.
And my mom takes care of the money and tickets.
Why did your family want to get in this business? I was in bands in high school and stuff, And there was nowhere for me to play.
It's always nice to see parents Who support their kid's dream of music.
This is like that on steroids.
Yeah.
He's been her roadie since she started doing bands.
Yeah.
Daly: What does that mean to you To have their support at this level? It's kind of an unreal feeling.
Kota: My parents have sacrificed a lot for me and my music.
When i was about 11, We moved to california from new mexico.
Eric: Kota has worked so hard, Developing herself as a musician.
As a parent, you're just -- just proud to see them Pursuing something that makes them happy And makes other people happy.
Kota: I have a band called bad wolf.
ooh We had custom-made costumes and theatrics.
i would fall down I take advantage of every opportunity To show people what we're about.
For me, turning a chair, it would mean a huge deal.
But i think my parents would just be so excited.
[ voice breaking .]
they're just always there, no matter what, When i need them, and [sniffles.]
Sometimes i don't I don't know if i let them know enough.
There's no other place that you can get coaching like this To help me move on to the next level, So getting any kind of critique would just be life-changing.
There is no backup plan for me 'cause i know that this is what i want to do.
[ cheers and applause .]
go, kota! Let's go! if you ever change your mind about leaving leaving me behind [ cheers and applause .]
oh, whoa bring it to me bring your sweet loving [ cheers and applause .]

I could see you in a band with me.
You know what i'm saying? Oh, my god! [ cheers and applause .]
Damn it! I really loved that you -- you were singing so soulfully, But then when we turned around, there is a beautiful-color hair, A dress, pair of boots, and you're punching the air like Yeah.
A girl that's in a rock band, And you're doing it your way, which is super cool.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Pharrell: Yeah.
[ cheers and applause .]
Kota, you're like a modern-day cyndi lauper.
I love cyndi lauper.
Your voice, it just made me smile Yeah.
When i heard her sing.
It just sounded like fun.
Thank you! On paper, i don't seem like the best coach for you.
Let's be fair, though.
Blake's not just a bad coach on paper.
Blake's just a bad idea for a coach just in general and always.
[ laughter .]
Give me a freakin' chance, man.
Come on! I love you, blake.
I love you.
I know about trying to find your own path, And i feel like we can have fun talking about that, To take it to the next place.
Kota, would you like to make a choice? This is so crazy That i actually get to choose between all you amazing artists! Wait, you're saying blake and i actually have a shot? You guys are legends! Are you kidding me?! Oh, no, now i'm getting scared! Gwen! Wait! So you're telling me there's a chance! Hey, wait, hold on.
Gwen! Gwen! [ laughs .]
Wait, okay, let me pitch myself more.

You'd better watch yourself.
He's got to have issues with not having won this show Nearly as many times as i have.
This is like gwen on fire right now.
I'm like [imitates fire crackling.]
Daly: Still to come Our coaches discover more incredible artists you got to tip on the tightrope fever whoo! Daly: And one that has blake and pharrell at odds.
Are you saying you don't believe That i really want her on my team? No.

Keith is a fantastic father.
He absolutely adores her.
She adores him.
You know, i'm basically looking after rowan during the day And then leaving to go to my show at night.
You feel extra pressure to get to your end game Now that rowan's here? Yeah, i want to, you know, get to the point Where i don't have to worry financially And she can be completely secure, And it'll be good.

It is on the back burner as of right now Because this is A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, for sure.
I'm going to be dedicating the song i'm singing To my stepdad, floyd.
He is such a selfless person and very protective.
He's my stepdad, but he's always been a father figure to me.
He was in the marine corps.
He was in the e.
O.
D.
Branch -- explosive ordnance disposal.
In 2010, he got deployed to afghanistan.
And my mom was 8 months pregnant at the time.
Floyd was disarming a bomb That [ sniffling .]
That, um Prematurely detonated.
[ sighs .]
Chrissy: I was at work when it happened.
I saw four military members in uniform, and i just knew.
I dropped to my knees and started crying, and It was hard.
Up in sky.
He's up in the sky.
I know.
Alyssa: My little sister, sienna, Her middle name is grace.
She's our little saving grace that floyd left for us.
Just the presence of her being in there, It just -- it lifted all of our souls.
Music became a huge part of my life.
It was my outlet after i lost my stepdad.
I felt like that was where i could catch my breath and Relay my emotions.
I don't play any gigs.
I play recitals here and there.
This is hopefully the start of my career.
Well, you've got a lot of inspiration, obviously.
What are you singing? "i will remember you" by sarah mclachlan.
How are you gonna keep your emotions in check? I visualize him there and singing to him, So it's comforting to me.
I just graduated high school, So this is, like, an amazing opportunity, And i hope i get a chair turned around.
I feel my stepdad all the time when i sing, And i'm gonna walk out there with him right next to me.
[ gasps .]
she looks beautiful.
Oh, come on, baby girl.
i will remember you will you remember me? don't let your life pass you by weep not for the memories i'm so tired, but i can't sleep standing on the edge of something much too deep and i will remember you will you remember me? come on! don't let your life pass you by weep not for the memories [ cheers and applause .]
Baby.
[ cheers and applause continue .]
Oh.
Hi.
Oh, my gosh, she's really pretty.
[ laughs .]
what's your name? Alyssa sheridan.
That song's really hard to sing, lots of long notes.
Yeah.
Maybe it was just a song choice That was a little too hard for you right now, But you have a really beautiful voice.
Thank you.
There is a sweetness and an innocence And a vulnerability to your voice That you should never lose.
Moving forward, Just keep singing and keep getting better.
That's all we ever do.
I think that you should go and work on your voice And bring a technical skill to it And come back and slay it next time And turn four chairs around.
Thank you.
[ cheers and applause .]
Gwen: Alyssa had a really emotional, sensitive voice, And when you have such a fragile kind of voice, It's really hard to hold out really long notes like that, So i felt for her.
I think she had something natural, But she was also nervous, too, though.
I love that song so much, though.
Oh, i love you.
Alyssa: As far as i'm concerned, I made my stepdad, floyd, proud.
If there's anyone that doesn't let something get in their way, It's her.
I love every single one of you.
[ laughter .]
Sienna.
Daly: Still to come oh, yeah Daly: As the talent level heats up what did i say? what?! My gosh! Daly: So does the competition among our coaches.
No, no! You turned it too late! There will never be another voice like yours.
Whoo! The stuff you said to that guy, It was absolutely asinine.
You got no game.
Daly: And later, an artist from a famous family Michael: My dad's chuck woolery.
My great-grandparents were ozzie and harriet.
Daly: Hopes to make a name for himself On the "voice" stage.
say what you need to say this is "the voice" Daly: Welcome back.
Let's meet our next artist, 15-year-old siahna im From auburn, washington.
I'm half korean and half french canadian.
My mom is a math teacher, so when i get an 80% on my test, She's like, "you have to retake that test.
" My dad is the exact opposite of my mom.
He is one crazy person.
I'm gonna beat you.
Old man.
Old man?! One time, my dad was just driving down the street, And he saw a school bus was for sale.
Backyard, and we never used it.
That was a -- i don't know -- mistake.
[ laughter .]
Siahna: But like my dad, i'm a weird person.
Being normal would be boring.
How'd you get into singing? In 3rd grade, i watched a video of ray charles, And that's when i decided i wanted to sing soul music.
Some music comes in one ear and goes out the other ear, But i feel soul music goes in one ear And goes straight to your heart.
[ laughs .]
There's not very many places to sing where i live, So i just sang at open mikes in cafés.
I really like that it's a blind audition, Because when people hear me talk, they underestimate me.
They're like, "she's just a little girl.
" I'd consider myself an old soul.
And so, i know if i got onto "the voice," They'd help me develop who i am as an artist 'cause i'd learn so much from everybody.
[ cheers and applause .]
Oh, man.
Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
[ cheers and applause .]
Whoo! never know how much i love you [ cheering .]
never know how much i care Whoa! when you put your arms around me i get a fever that's so hard to bear you give me fever when you kiss me fever when you hold me tight fever in the morning and fever all through the night romeo loved juliet juliet, she felt the same and when he put his arms around her he said, "julie, baby, you're my flame thou giveth fever when we kisseth fever with the flaming youth [ laughs .]
fever [ cheering .]
i'm afire fever, yeah, i burn forsooth now you've listened to my story here's the point that i have made chicks were born to give you fever be it fahrenheit or centigrade they give you fever Yeah! when you kiss them fever when you live and learn fever till you sizzle what a lovely way to burn what a lovely way to burn what a lovely way to bu-u-u-u-rn [ cheers and applause .]
Yes! Yeah! [ cheers and applause .]
[ giggles .]
Who are you? My name is siahna.
How old are you? I'm 15 years old.
Oh, come on! [ cheers and applause .]
Trouble.
Gwen: That's crazy! The first moment i heard your voice, I was like, "that's my girl.
" We will have so much fun together, i promise you.
Can i just interrupt? Hello, mr.
Skateboard "p.
" [ giggles .]
Uh-oh.
Oh, no.
Here we go.
Can i say something? This is great.
I only got like, you know, the next couple of minutes Before you make a decision, So i have to fight within the parameters -- Bull crap.
It's just like a half-hour every time you talk.
[ laughter .]
This is so delicious.
I just love every moment of this.
There is no doubt that you're talented.
There's no doubt [ sighs .]
That we all want you on our teams.
And there's no doubt that you're super special.
Your half-hour's not quite up yet, though, If you want to go ahead and wrap it on up now.
[ laughter .]
okay.
I'll wrap it up.
[ cheers and applause .]
So, look, regardless of what happens, like -- He just put the dagger in and twisted it.
No, no, no, no.
Regardless of what happens, Like, i'm just gonna give you a hug now.
Now you're toast.
You'd better stand up.
[ cheers and applause .]
Just know i wanted you on my team.
See, blake can't do what you just did, pharrell, Because if he does it, it would look like You'd be getting attacked by a bigfoot.
[ giggles .]
There's something special about you To be able to connect with that song the way you did, And you're -- you're getting a lesson early on How thick some guys are gonna be laying it on you.
[ laughter .]
You need to start developing that bull-crap meter.
Pharrell: Oh, so, are you saying You don't believe that i really want her on my team? No.
Or are you saying you really don't believe That she was fresh and new and different? What am i being dishonest about? [ cheers and applause .]
I know he's so, so cute, And i know you're a huge fan of him.
I can feel it.
I started my band when i was 17 years old.
It's a whole journey that i've been on that i can share with you In a way that nobody in this room can share.
Look, the cool thing is, Like, you can't go wrong if you go with gwen.
What about me? What about you? You just accused me of, like, you know Bull crap.
Exactly! That was bull crap, too! This is real! I'm gonna do everything i can To make you the star that you deserve to be.
Siahna, who do you pick as your coach? [ audience shouting .]
Come on, siahna.
[ laughs .]
come on.
Come home! Siahna: [ laughs .]
I Would really love to be on any of your teams, But i think i pick pharrell.
[ cheers and applause .]
It was a really tough decision, But my heart told me to go to pharrell.
Welcome to team pharrell.
Thank you.
I'm gonna be honest.
I'm off to a rough start.
We all knew the second She called pharrell the "grand master skater 'p,'" It was over.
[ cheers and applause .]
Pharrell: Siahna was amazing.
Loved the soulful aspect to her approach of singing.
She's so good.
Gwen: She's so cute.
Pharrell: She's just different, And that's what i like more than anything else.
You good? Seriously, pharrell's bull crap is all over this area, So don't slip in it.
[ laughs .]
I got to go wipe pharrell's bull crap off of me.
[ laughter .]
[ cheering .]
Team pharrell! Yes! [ cheering continues .]
Yes! [ voice breaking .]
i've been dreaming of this my whole life, And [ sniffles .]
It's coming true! [ laughs .]
Hey, let me ask you something.
Yes, sir.
Here it comes.
Did you get upset with me Whenever i called bull crap on the bull crap? Not at all, but it wasn't bull crap.
Can we hug it out? Come on, man! There was never even a problem.
Give me a kiss.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no! See, i knew you had some problem with me.
I knew it! I don't have a problem, but it's weird.
[ laughs .]
daly: Coming up [ cheers and applause .]
Feel what it's like to be a coach And experience the most shocking blind audition In "voice" history.
That was the trippiest turn-around, blind audition.
And then what did i do? Daly: More electrifying performances I feel like i'm watching garth brooks in concert.
Have our coaches on their feet And fighting Don't look at him! Don't look at him! I would love to have you on my team.
Daly: For the artists they want.
That was late! He was late! You got faked out! He was late! You got faked out! this is "the voice" Daly: Welcome back to night 1 of the blind auditions.
Let's see where the teams stand.
Blake has yet to add a singer to his team Ohh! Yes! While adam and a revitalized gwen Have each picked up one artist.
Oh, man! And defending champion pharrell is off to a strong start I'm just gonna give you a hug now.
Landing two artists for his team.
I love being back in the chair.
Come on, come on, come on, come on, come on.
Listening to the footsteps walking toward the stage, I can't wait to see who they actually are.
You're listening to their souls, And you always want to figure out who it is when you turn around.
I can't wait to see what comes out now.
Come on.
Daly: Feel what it's like to be a coach And see if you would push your button For one of the most unique voices to ever take our stage.
party girls don't get hurt can't feel anything, when will i learn i push it down i push it do-o-o-wn Yeah! i'm the one "for a good time call" phone's blowin' up, ringin' my doorbell feel the love i feel the lo-o-o-ve oh, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, drink 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, drink 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, drink throw 'em back till i lose count i'm gonna swing from the chandelier from the chandelier i'm What?! gonna live like tomorrow doesn't exist like it doesn't exist i'm gonna fly like a bird through the night feel my tears as they dry i'm gonna swing from the chandelier What?! from the chandelier i'm holding on for dear life won't look down, won't open my eyes keep my glass full until morning light 'cause i'm just holding on for tonight on for tonight on for tonight [ cheers and applause .]
[ cheers and applause continue .]
Thank you.
Wow! [ cheers and applause .]
My baby! What?! [ cheers and applause continue .]
I don't know if i'm happy or really scared! [ laughter .]
[ laughs .]
What's your name? My name is jordan smith.
Where are you from? I'm from harlan, kentucky.
[ cheers and applause .]
That was the most trippiest turn-around, blind audition, Freakiest thing i've ever experienced in my life.
Yeah.
And that's what makes it super cool.
Gwen: Yeah.
Thank you.
You do not look like your voice, fyi.
I get that a lot.
But that's the super coolest part about it.
It's all of that individuality standing onstage right now.
[ cheers and applause .]
thank you.
The song that you had chosen Is probably one of the most challenging vocals for anybody to sing, Let alone a male vocalist.
So, with every person that turned around, you got better.
That shows me how ready you are for this, And seeing these people smiling and clapping And seeing these guys and their reaction to you Was such a beautiful experience, and thank you, jordan.
That was really amazing.
Thank you.
I appreciate that a lot.
Jordan, do you mind -- do you mind sharing your story? Um, sure.
Yeah, so, i'm from a really small town, And there's nothing there, and there's even a joke That says you'll never leave harlan alive, because it's true.
I don't even know how i'm actually here, but [ laughter .]
Um, i haven't always been the coolest person.
Yes, you are, but go ahead.
What are you talking about? I mean, i am now, but i haven't always been the coolest person.
Gwen: [ laughs .]
[ cheers and applause .]
That's the right answer! I sing in my church most of all, And that's kind of where my roots are, And that's what i love.
And, obviously, my voice is different.
I get called "ma'am" on the phone all the time.
Me too.
I get called "ma'am" at every drive-through.
Through that, i had to learn That being different is actually what made me special.
Yeah.
It's my gift, And so this, for me, is just an amazing opportunity To share that it's okay to be different And it's okay to be yourself, because you're made that way, And that's how god intended for you to be.
Wow.
[ cheers and applause .]
That's my baby! [ laughs .]
Everyone's standing up for you, dude.
[ cheers and applause continue .]
Jordan, i feel so connected to you, And what you just said about your gift and sharing that -- You are amazing! You just moved me so much today.
Thank you.
Thank you.
[ applause .]
Hey, jordan, it's one thing to be in the drive-through And people call you "ma'am" because of your speaking voice, But, man, your singing voice, i mean It's unbelievable.
Absolutely.
You got four chairs to turn around, And congratulations is all i can tell you, man.
[ cheers and applause .]
wow, thank you.
I think I'm the best coach for you.
[ laughter .]
Right there, you're supposed to say, "i agree.
" [ laughter .]
It's been an incredible experience Getting to know you beyond the vocals, Which is so amazing, And i think that not just the show but the world Needs a person like you.
I think you're the most important person That's ever been on this show.
[ cheers and applause .]
Pharrell: You talk about being different, And where i come from, that's our ethos.
Like, that which makes you different Is what makes you special.
I can completely identify with that, So i would love to have you on my team.
I just want to make sure you heard me say that.
Who do you pick as your coach? [ audience shouting .]
This is the most difficult decision i've ever had to make.
[ shouting continues .]
[ laughs .]
this is "the voice" Daly: Welcome back to the blind auditions.
Before the break, jordan smith turned all four chairs.
[ cheers and applause .]
Now he has a hard decision to make.
Who do you pick as your coach? [ audience shouting .]
I'm gonna have to go with what i feel, and [ dramatic music plays .]
I pick adam.
when you've been fighting for it all your life you've been struggling to make things right that's how a superhero learns to fly Thank you.
Dude, i think you are a ray of light.
I am so -- I'm so excited.
Thank you.
Pharrell: He's good.
Thank you.
He's good.
The world can learn a lot from jordan.
It was like he was lifting every single person in the room, And when i turned around and experienced it, I thought to myself, "wow, this kid is a wonderful human being, And he's also a very talented human being.
" I love when those things collide.
Congratulations, dude.
Happy for you.
[ muffled crying .]
[ exhales sharply .]
You guys! [ cheers and applause .]
four chairs.
This is just such an unbelievable opportunity, And it's just because i'm taking the chance and working for it.
All: Team adam! It's been so long since i got one of those.
Like, that dude's crazy.
Yeah.
He's crazy.
I missed all of them last season.
That's another nother level.
I did not know that that guy was gonna look like that.
I mean, you just have a vision, and you're like -- But, look, it excites me about the show.
You got one.
I'm telling you.
Daly: Blake failed to attract jordan.
Maybe he'll have better luck with our next artist.
I go by dr.
Paul.
I'm 66 years old.
I live in a log cabin in the appalachian mountains.
It's a beautiful place.
There's a trout stream that i can walk down And catch my lunch if i want to.
My dad brought a guitar home in 1964, And i picked it up and started playing.
But in 1969, i was drafted in the army, And i was a medical-electronics repairman.
They started calling me "the doctor," And it's kind of stuck with me all through these years.
When i got out of the service, I toured throughout the '70s and into the early '80s.
During that time, i met my wife.
I married a cute guy in the band Who turned into a wonderful husband of 34 years.
Once i got married, I decided that i was gonna stop playing music, And i got a job with an electrical contractor.
He's father of five, grandfather of six.
He's finally getting some recognition For what a wonderful musician he is.
How does music come back into your life? After i retired, the economy kind of went south.
I needed to go back to work, And i decided that i'd give music a try.
Little by little, i worked up to where last year, I did 150 shows.
Wow.
My goal with this Is to leave something for my kids and for my dad.
He's always been one of my heroes.
I wish he could see what i was doing now.
[ voice breaking .]
i think he'd like it.
This is the last shot that i'm gonna have.
And getting a recording contract would be a big deal.
I think i've got a good chance To be successful in country music.
At 66 years old, i've taken the stage many times, And when i take the stage tonight, It's gonna be the biggest opportunity of my life.
All right! He looks so cool! Oh, he's -- wow.
Oh, my god.
the first thing i remember knowing was that lonesome whistle blowing and a young'un's dream of growing up to ride on a freight train leaving town never knowing where i'm bound no one could change my mind, but mama tried and i turned 21 in prison doing life without parole no one could steer me right, but mama tried mama tried mama tried to raise me better but her pleading, i denied that leaves only me to blame mama tried oh, i turned 21 in prison doing life without parole no one could steer me right, but mama tried mama tried mama tried to raise me better but her pleading, i denied that leaves only me to blame mama tried well, that leaves only me to blame mama tri-i-i-i-ed [ cheers and applause .]
Wow! What's your name, man? Dr.
Paul.
I'm 66 years old.
[ cheers and applause .]
How long have you been growing that bad boy? I've had a beard since i got out of the service in 1970.
You got to be careful around barbecue grills and power tools.
[ laughter .]
Blake: Well, let me tell you something.
I could tell by your voice that you weren't a kid up here, And that doesn't matter to me.
The thing that concerned me was, When your phrases would fall off, You would give up on it too soon, and we would go flat.
But, man, your overall tone -- great job, man.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
You don't sound like anyone i've ever heard before.
This is a cool experience to actually hear you sing today.
Thank you.
Thank you, folks.
Thank you so much.
[ cheers and applause .]
You need to do some oak ridge boys for us Next time you come by.
[ laughs .]
Thank you, pharrell.
Very nice to meet you, sir.
Appreciate it.
Thank you.
Nice to meet you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Fantastic, man.
Thank you, brother.
Fantastic.
Thank you.
Dr.
Paul: Everybody should go for their dream.
I mean, i don't care how old you are, how young you are.
Just do it.
Even though i didn't get a chair to turn, I wouldn't trade this for the world.
It was a great experience.
"careful around barbecue grills.
" [ laughing .]
i know.
Daly: Still to come where did i go? Daly: More incredible singers what did i say? Yeah! now let me see you do the tightrope Daly: Have blake fighting To land his first artist of the season.
You look like a star.
You sound like a star.
That's what i look for.
No, no! You turned it too late! Whoo! The stuff you said to that guy Was absolutely asinine.
this is "the voice" Daly: Welcome back to night 1 of the blind auditions.
First day i met blake, i had no idea who he was.
Now i realize he's the biggest country star in the world.
I am not the biggest country star in the world.
You kind of are, though.
Garth brooks is But i'm gonna have something done to him.
Listen to him.
Then i'll be back on top.
Y'all stop it! I know what you're doing! Y'all are trying to get in here You're so talented! So that i'm not so mean to y'all out there.
[ laughs .]
i'm going out there! I got work to do! Oh, my god, blake, you're so charming! I know exactly what you're trying to do! Daly: Let's meet our next artist -- 23-year-old nadjah nicole from new castle, delaware.
My dad was in the military, And when i was in high school, i went to military school, And i couldn't stand it.
[ laughs .]
I didn't want to wear a uniform, But i was afforded the opportunities to sing At political events.
I enjoyed the fact that i could move people, So i started doing talent shows.
At 16, biggest performance of my life was at the apollo theater.
It was amazing.
After i won, people swarmed me.
It made me more aware that i could actually be somebody, And when i decided to go to college And i started gigging more, It really made me more confident.
And then i got pregnant.
I didn't tell my parents just yet.
I didn't want them to think that my life was over.
[ voice breaking .]
i still don't.
But [sighs.]
being here makes me feel like it's not.
[ sniffles .]
Journey: Apples Nadjah: Yeah.
Delicious.
Nadjah: My parents -- they were extremely supportive, And my daughter is now 2 years old.
[ laughs .]
Her name is journey beloved.
She's my little star, my little [chuckles.]
my little cupcake.
[ chuckles .]
Blow the bubble.
Her dad -- we broke up late last year.
And now i'm a personal banker.
All right.
You're all set.
You know, i just make it work, and then i gig when i can.
Oh.
And journey is going to know that mommy worked hard For her.
Oh! Watching her grow with the music, the baby, the school, It's just been an amazing ride.
I couldn't be more proud of nadjah.
She's following and living her dream.
I'm happy for her.
Nadjah: If a chair turns, it's validating That, okay, you worked hard, But then on top of that, they're gonna help you get even further.
I need that.
I need that.
I will be singing "tightrope" by janelle monae.
This song represents the type of artist that i want to be.
I want to be that person that you can connect with.
I just have to do what i know i can do.
Who is that? Who's that? [ gasps .]
I got that feeling, pharrell.
I see it.
You see my feeling? Yes, i do.
It's pretty big, isn't it? [ laughs .]

Wow! Hi.
What's your name? My name is nadjah nicole.
[ laughs .]
You are not the person i thought was singing that song.
I mean, it's incredible.
I missed it because i didn't get a chance To really hear everything that you could do, And by the time i realized that you could, The time had run out.
[ chuckles .]
But the show needs more voices like yours, And we're happy to have you.
[ cheers and applause .]
thank you.
I love that you picked a janelle monae song, Because i'll tell you one thing for sure.
He has no idea who that is -- blake shelton.
[ laughter .]
That says so much about you, And then turning around and seeing you In that beautiful yellow dress with the earrings And the hair and everything, you're like, "whoa!" [ sighs .]
i love this show.
To pretend i know what to expect when i turn around is insane Because you really have no idea.
I-i was blown away.
[ cheers and applause .]

Thank you.
She literally could not be any cuter than she is.
I mean, and i want to be sure that i'm -- and you literally -- You literally couldn't have pressed your button any later.
[ laughter .]
I want to be sure That i'm pronouncing your name exactly right -- nadjah? Yes.
Okay.
That's a common word for me.
[ laughter .]
terrible reference.
You know, i-i realize [ chuckles .]
That's a freakin' hard song to sing, And, yes, i don't know who the hell janelle is.
I turned around for nadjah.
I didn't turn around for janelle.
[ cheers and applause .]
You look like a star.
You sound like a star.
That's what i look for on this show, Is people who will make a difference and have an impact, And i think you can do that.
You already have with me.
Thank you.
Who do you pick as your coach? [ dramatic music plays .]
[ audience shouting .]

Blake: Finally got my first artist of the season, And i couldn't be happier that it's nadjah.
When i'm building my team, i definitely slant country, But to me, a great voice is a great voice, No matter what genre they're in.
You got that one.
They all had wonderful things to say, But he said exactly what i needed my heart to hear.
These are happy tears.
Hey, boo.
Hey, boo.
Hey, adam.
Are you feeling any "nausea" right now? Gwen: [ laughs .]
Are you "nauseated"? [ laughter .]
Idiot! [ cheers and applause .]
[ laughs .]
Daly: Coming up mountains win again say what you need to say what did i do? Daly: An artist gets a four-chair turn This is gonna be great! You're amazing! Daly: Igniting our coaches.
If you choose me, you're gonna make my day.
I would love to work with someone like you.
The combination of you and i blazing a path.
I am on fire for you.
this is "the voice" I am odaly: Welcome back.
Woman: We love you, gwen! Thank you for being here.
Your vibe is a beautiful one, though.
Thank you.
Blake, stop harassing the crowd.
[ laughs .]
Daly: As our coaches settle in Let's meet our next artist, 15-year-old braiden sunshine.
I get asked all the time If sunshine is a stage name or my real last name, and it is.
It's on a birth certificate, i swear.
Being here is just so mind-blowing.
It's so cool.
I've never seen this big a setup.
Especially this.
This is bigger than me.
This is sick.
[ laughs .]
I've been doing music ever since i can really remember.
When i was 9, i was singing at a church service, And some guys came up to me.
They said, "we're getting a band together.
Would you like to join?" And i'm like, "yeah, that'll be awesome.
" The band that i joined is called silver hammer, And i'm the youngest member.
I've been playing with them for about six years now.
And what's it like to go to one of their shows and see braiden up there? Whenever he gets in front of a crowd, he just lights up.
We've done everything from weddings to restaurants To concert venues.
He started in church doing the boy soprano thing, And then after a couple years, we got him doing ac/dc.
The band doesn't really get together much anymore 'cause all of them are off in college, But i got to keep doing this.
I'm not just gonna stop.
This kind of an opportunity could definitely change my life.
To work with one of the coaches Would be a really good learning experience 'cause they've gotten to the top with what they've done.
Watching pharrell help sawyer win the competition Was really cool.
And he was just this small-town kid, So i thought if he could do it, i could at least give it a shot.
Being the youngest here, I want to prove that i'm a real contender.
You feel it? It's got to be a good one.
It's about to get real.
-Oh, god, he's gonna rock this.
-He is.
i pick up my smile and put it in my pocket hold it for a while try not to have to drop it men are not to cry so, how am i to stop it? keep it all inside don't show how much she rocked ya ooh, can you feel the same? yeah, you gotta love the pain ooh, and it looks like rain again ooh, feel it comin' in the mountains win again the mountains win again What?! [ cheers and applause .]
Whoo! That's what i'm talking about! [ laughing .]
that was so weird.
Oh, man.
I was so happy i pressed at the last second.
You're so amazing! You're amazing! [ cheers and applause .]
First of all, what's your name? I'm braiden sunshine.
Oh, my gosh, your name is sunshine! Sunshine! [ laughs .]
Braiden, how old are you? I'm 15.
-Yeah.
-What? Gwen and pharrell don't ever fight each other.
This is gonna be great! I can't wait! Pharrell: You're a special person.
You're a 15-year-old boy that plays a guitar.
You sing in both of your octaves very comfortably.
You have an old soul, And there will never be another voice like yours.
[ cheers and applause .]
And i hear a couple of things That you could work on, by the way, And i would love the opportunity to work with someone like you.
You're losing him, gwen.
You're losing him.
Say something! Say something quick! Okay.
Braiden, i do know how to help you.
I've been in a band since i'm 17.
I'm also a mother of three boys, So i know how to fight for someone that i really care about And, like, find out who you want to be.
[ chuckles .]
he's so funny.
He's looking at pharrell, and he's, like, Kind of has this little look in his eye Like, "i can't believe pharrell's sitting there.
" Don't look at him! Don't look at him! [ laughter .]
Don't look at him! Braiden, if you had told me when i was 15 That i was gonna get to perform in front of gwen stefani, I would have lost my mind.
Gwen: All i'm gonna say is, if you choose me, You're gonna make my day, like, majorly.
Okay, mr.
Sunshine? [ laughs .]
Mr.
Sunshine, please be on team gwen.
This is like a custody battle.
[ laughter .]
You're that good, man.
Who are you gonna pick as your coach, man? Come on.
This is a tough one.
[ audience shouting .]
Ah! It's so hard.
I [ shouting continues .]
I pick, um I pick gwen.
What?! Oh, my god! Adam: Yes! Yes! i'm walking on sunshine - whoa -oh, my god! - i'm walking on sunshine -yeah! Are you serious? Yes.
Wow, you're so amazing.
I got you a shirt.
-That's so freakin' cool.
-Wow.
and don't it feel good? Ugh! At the very last second, two of them turned! It's crazy! That doesn't happen! That was so cool! Going up against pharrell -- i'm such a fan of him, But at the end of the day, you do get sort of competitive, So you're like, "oh, i want that person.
" How about that, gwen? Yes! Yeah! It was just so shocking that somebody that young Could have that much tone.
I can't wait to see what else he can do.
[ cheers and applause .]
Whoo-hoo! Braiden: I was heart-set on going with pharrell, But some of the stuff gwen said Really brought me over to her team And made me feel like i would be more at home.
And she gave me a shirt.
[ chuckles .]
until you use me up Daly: You can listen to full versions Of tonight's blind-audition songs on apple music Or buy them on itunes.
from the chandelier Daly: Still to come Adam gets fired up to win another four-chair turn.
I will destroy for you.
My gosh.
I want you on my team so badly.
Calm down.
Yes! this is "the voice" Daly: Welcome back to the blind auditions.
Let's meet our next artist.
Michael: My name's michael woolery, And i'm from santa monica, california.
Have a good time.
Be yourself.
You're gonna be fabulous.
I came from a family that was in the entertainment industry.
My dad's chuck woolery.
People would know him from "love connection.
" Two minutes, two seconds.
Michael: My great-grandparents were ozzie and harriet.
My grandfather was david nelson, who is an actor, And his brother was ricky nelson.
Ricky's actually a part of the rock and roll hall of fame, And he has 30 top 40 hits.
Nice to meet you -- carson.
Hey, how are you? Nice to meet you.
You had to bring the great chuck woolery with you today? I did.
You here to take my job? What are you doing here? No, no.
I'm -- this is all about him.
It's not about me.
When did you know that he ha-- Took such a, you know, genuine interest in music? I taught him like three or four chords on guitar, And he just picked it up and ran with it.
Played all the time.
He was much better than i ever even hoped to be.
You've got so much entertainment around your whole family.
Sure.
That something you felt like you had to do, wanted to do? It's kind of like the opposite.
I ended up going the athletic route.
My parents moved to park city, utah, When i was 12 years old, and i really jumped into skiing.
The type of skiing i do is slopestyle and superpipe, Which involves a lot of flipping around And doing a series of tricks.
I started training at the olympic park For the 2014 sochi olympics.
And during practice At one of the two bigger events of the year, When i dropped in, my leg gave out.
My calf muscle tore.
And then i hit my head really hard at the bottom, Which gave me a concussion And pushed my spine forward a little bit.
My injury ended everything that i'd hoped for with skiing.
Right after that, my grandpa passed away.
It was just one of the hardest years i've had in my life.
During that time was when i really picked up the guitar And started putting all my focus in music.
I moved to l.
A.
, and right now, I work at a jewelry store as a sales professional.
Now that this opportunity's come up, It's like a whole other side of the story That i'm just really excited to get to.
Through music, i was really able to recover And just find a whole new identity with myself.
But it's always in the back of your head, Like, "am i good enough to compete against people That have been doing this their whole lives?" I just want to find my own identity in the family And see what i can bring to the table.
That's michael! walking like a one-man army fighting with the shadows in your head just living out the same old moment and knowing you'd be better off instead if you could only say what you need to say say what you need to say oh have no fear for giving in have no fear for giving over, no you better know that in the end it's better to say too much than never to say what you need to say again Come on, guys.
Come on, guys! Come on, guys! yeah, say what you need to sa-a-a-y say what you need to say oh, say what you need to say yeah, just say what you need to say [ cheers and applause .]
He did it.
He did it.
He did it.
He did it.
Adam: Hi, man.
What's your name? Michael woolery.
I think that no matter who you are Or what you do with your voice, The kind of self-confidence you must have About what you're doing has to be present.
I thought that it was a little bit unsure of itself, And that just took me out of it.
Sure.
There were great moments.
[ cheers and applause .]
Whoo! -Hi, michael.
-How are you? I don't know if maybe because no one was turning, You started getting more and more in your head, And i think you just kind of Were over-singing at the end a little bit, So that's really why i didn't press.
But i think that you have a really, really pretty voice.
Thank you.
I would suggest that you perform for crowds That are super tough So that these songs are second nature to you 'cause once you start thinking it, Then it's hard to get out of your head, And i think that's probably what happened today.
'cause you do have a great voice, like she said.
Thanks so much.
Yeah, thank you.
[ applause .]
Michael: I really want to go work on the coaches' critiques And take that out into the world and use it.
Proud of you.
You did a good job.
Thanks so much.

Barrett: My family was always involved in missionary work, And when i was 9 years old, We moved to durban, south africa.
I remember my brother and i hearing african music And thinking, "wow, that's different Than anything i've ever heard.
" That was one of the really early moments in my life Where i realized the power of music.
When i was 13 years old, we moved back home, And i started to sing in the choir, And i earned a vocal scholarship.
So, in 1999, i was a freshman in college.
I was involved with the ouachita singers.
We got the opportunity to travel to germany to perform, But on the way back, i was involved in something tragic.
[ sirens wailing .]
Couric: An american airlines jet with 145 people aboard Skidded off the runway in little rock overnight.
Barrett: Right away, i saw flames, And smoke was starting to fill the cabin, But i looked up, and there was a hole in the airplane, And i started grabbing people as fast as i could.
I grabbed the stewardess, and i picked her up, And she climbed up on top.
I pushed her through.
11 people lost their lives that day.
One of them was a fellow bass in the choir And our director, his middle daughter.
They put us on a bus and drove us to the terminal.
I walked off that bus, and i heard a voice.
And it was my brother.
And he said, "hey.
Hey, barrett.
" And i collapsed into my brother's arms.
Oh.
I remember asking myself the question why i made it.
When i met my wife And when i held my kids for the first time, I looked at my son and daughter, and i said, "this is why.
" When i'm not making music, i teach drama and speech, And it's a great way to provide for my family, But i really need something special To take it to the next level.
Sarah: He's everything to us, But i just know that he can be so much to so many people.
[ imitates explosion .]
I'm so proud of him.
Barrett: Working with any of these coaches Would be incredible.
It's an opportunity to learn an amazing amount of information From someone that's been through the fire.
I want people to see That you can overcome immense tragedy in your life And still do something great.
I think with this song and this moment on this day, That my destiny will be fulfilled.
Go, dad! Yay! Yay, daddy! Da! girl, you're looking fine tonight Jeff healey band! and every guy has got you in his sight [ laughs .]

Calling in the hogs right now.
Woooooo, pig! Together: Sooie! Razorbacks! Oh, man.
[ laughs .]
[ cheers and applause .]
Hey, barrett, what kind of music do you do? What are you -- i can't really tell.
I'm trying to, uh -- trying to pioneer a new sound Maybe in country music with some soul.
Whoo! There's some really great music out there, But i think there's a place for me, for this voice.
Yeah.
Yes! God bless you! [ cheers and applause .]
oh! I heard blake, obviously.
There was country in there.
I heard soul, the eclectic nature of pharrell.
I heard the person that wants to break the mold, like gwen.
And then i heard the falsetto stuff, And i was like, "that's a little bit of me!" [ laughter .]
I can tell by your vocals that you love all styles, And that's why you're one of my favorites.
Wow.
My favorites, barrett.
Oh, my god! Ooh, that was pretty nice.
Are you, obviously, a professional singer, right? I'm a high school teacher.
Oh, wow.
But can i ask? 'cause By all means.
I was, like, raising my hand 'cause he's a teacher.
[ laughter .]
I know that i'm not a country girl, But bluegrass, folk music -- That's what i grew up on, and i know i'm just a girl, But i-i do -- that is a low blow.
That's a low blow! I think you're incredible.
I love the theater onstage.
I love the drama.
I loved the personality and the voice.
-So, congratulations.
-Thank you so much.
Thank you.
Wow.
Pharrell: I pressed my button 'cause i just heard so much soul.
I felt like, whatever this is, It deserves four chairs to turn around, And i want to support whatever this is For it being on the show.
[ cheers and applause .]
If it's country soul, country pop, country rap, Whatever you're thinking, The word i'm interested in is "country.
" That's what i do with my life, and i think the combination Of you and i blazing a path like -- I can't let this happen.
The way that you perform onstage, We've never seen anything -- i'm not kidding when i say It's like watching garth up there.
Barrett -- i'm just gonna throw myself On your mercy right now and tell you -- I will destroy for you.
I am on fire for you.
I want you on my team so badly.
My gosh! Calm down.
You got all four of us to turn.
Who do you pick as your coach? Take a chance.
Take a chance.
These things that you're saying about me, it's incredible.
I'm incredibly humbled by it all And will continue to be no matter what happens.
[ dramatic music plays .]
-What do you say, ol' red? -Let's do it.
I pick blake.
Yeah! drinking that ice-cold beer -Come on! -Of course.
-Come on! -Unbelievable! runnin' them red dirt roads out, kicking up dust Gwen: He has to.
He has to.
You did badass.
You ready? Where you been hiding? Where you been hiding? Arkansas, waiting on you.
Barrett: Blake is an icon in country music, And now i get to work with him, and he gets to help me, And we're about to do some special things! I know we are.
Watch out.
[ cheers and applause .]
Blake: I don't know that i've ever seen Somebody walk across this stage With the swagger that barrett had.
I'm blown away by him.
-Here he comes! -There he is -- team blake! Daddy! [ laughs .]
yeah! Barrett: I think that my purpose in life Is to be a great husband and a great father And that all the things that i've overcome in my journey, And i hope that people will have watched this audition And maybe gained a little bit of encouragement from my story.
You're, like, from the country, so they go to you.
The stuff you said to that guy was the -- Greatest stuff that he could've heard.
There was nothing he could take from what you said And put that into motion -- I know what you're doing.
It doesn't work.
Are you ever gonna understand it doesn't work when you do that? It was absolutely asinine.
It doesn't work when you do that.
[ laughter .]
I mean, he thinks it's gonna get to me.
You got no game, dude.
I can't laugh any more today, or i will die.
You got no game.
[ laughs .]
