Titans (2018) s01e06 Episode Script

Jason Todd

1 [KORY.]
Previously on Titans [BECKY.]
Bruce Wayne was at the circus the night your parents died.
[BRUCE.]
I want to help you.
He has volunteered to be your foster parent.
And, Dick, the police, they believe it may not have been an accident.
Someone killed my parents? [DICK.]
I'm gonna find out who's running this freak show.
- I'll come with you.
- I thought we weren't splitting up.
I'm coming back.
I promise.
[BEEP.]
- [BEEPING.]
- Nap time, kids.
[DR.
ADAMSON.]
Detective Grayson.
Are you Mr.
Adamson? And what do you want with Rachel? You found me.
So the Organization is sending people to kill us.
If you don't give me some answers [PAN SIZZLING.]
[DICK GROANS.]
[JASON GRUNTING.]
Dick Grayson in the flesh.
Nice to meet you, bro.
I'm the new Robin.
[PRIEST.]
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
And He will welcome them into the Kingdom of Heaven where they will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
Let us pray.
Oh, God, who did instruct the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant us in the same spirit to be truly wise and ever to rejoice in his consolation, through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.
[CLAY.]
They loved you.
And they were proud of you.
You know that, right? The police said someone killed them.
Someone burned the trapeze ropes with hydrofluoric acid [SIGHS.]
And disappeared.
And the police can't find him.
Is that true? - It's not your concern, Dick.
- Is it true? Someone will find who did it.
I spoke with Ms.
Bond.
It sounds like Bruce Wayne is serious about takin' you in.
- But I wanna stay with you.
- I want that, too.
But part of my agreement with your parents was deciding what's best for you.
Living with you is what's best for me.
Bruce Wayne is a very wealthy man.
And a very good man.
He can give you everything that I can't.
I don't want to.
Please don't make me.
[SIGHS.]
I know you don't believe me, kiddo, but trust me, living with Bruce Wayne is gonna change your life forever.
[THEME MUSIC PLAYING.]
[JASON.]
Man, dude looks dead.
[DICK.]
Trust me.
There's a difference between dead and knocked out.
[JASON.]
This is awesome! Robin and Robin, in action.
Who the hell are you? Jason Todd.
The new Robin.
Robin 2.
0, right? [GRUNTS.]
[PANTS.]
Hey, seriously, man, it's an honor to meet you.
[SIGHS.]
Yep.
[GRUNTS IN EFFORT.]
I always wondered what this moment was gonna be like, never thought that when it happened I'd be saving your life.
So, there's a new Robin, eh? Yours truly.
In the flesh.
[DICK GRUNTS.]
- Does Batman know you're here? - Of course.
Bruce knows how badly I've always wanted to meet you.
Pick your brain, catch a couple of pointers, he's all, "Go for it, bro.
" Hey, let me go grab my clothes.
I'll be right back.
[SIGHS.]
[JASON.]
Can't believe it.
Here we are, together, in the same car.
This is so cool! Yeah.
Real cool.
[SNIFFLES.]
So how long have you and Bruce been, uh - Been - Together? - Almost a year.
- A year? [CHUCKLES SOFTLY.]
Wow.
Okay.
Didn't waste any time.
- So how did you and he - I was out boosting cars.
Guess I chose the wrong one.
[CHUCKLES.]
Or the right one.
You tried to steal the Batmobile? No, man.
Just the hubcaps.
And just like that, he took you in? Guess he saw potential.
So, what do you think of the new suit? Upgrades are pretty sick, right? The new tunic is made with Zylon fibers, six times stronger than Kevlar.
Seriously, bro, you can hit me with a flame thrower from ten feet and I'd be like, "That's all you got?" - Zylon fibers.
- Smart, right? Hey, no offense but you gotta admit, the old version was a little outdated.
So how'd you find me anyway? The tracker.
What tracker? In your arm.
There's a fucking tracker in my arm? Yeah.
In mine, too.
Don't you remember him putting it in? No.
Maybe you forgot.
So, where are we goin'? I gotta find a place to put that guy.
Can I make a suggestion? Sure.
According to Bruce, the design of this place is inspired by Frank Lloyd.
- Wright.
- I know, right? Dude's really into, you know, lines and shit.
Bruce has a bunch of places like this.
He calls them "safe houses," but they're more like condos.
- Never been to one.
- You're lucky.
[AUTOMATED VOICE.]
Access denied.
I got this.
Access granted.
Guess he changed the locks.
Why are you doing this? Why do you even want to be Robin? Are you kidding? This is the dopest gig ever.
Hangin' out with Batman, kicking bad guys' asses, being famous, driving the goddamn Batmobile.
He lets you drive the Batmobile? Wouldn't you rather have your own name? Like "Sparrow" or "Blue Jay," for "Jason"? Fuck, no.
The whole point is being Robin.
Batman needs Robin.
Why do you think he makes us wear those lame colors? 'Cause we're drawing fire.
"Look over here, assholes!" Then boom, the Bat lands and starts trashing ass.
[ELEVATOR DOORS OPENS.]
Here, I'll go back and get our friend.
[PANTS.]
Who's this? - Niccolo Machiavelli.
- Oh, yeah.
Bruce has talked about that dude.
Sounds like a total savage.
"If an injury has to be done to a man, it should be so severe that his vengeance need not to be feared.
Severities should be dealt out all at once, so that their suddenness may give less offense.
Benefits ought to be handed out drop-by-drop so they may be relished the more.
" You know, I used to read about you as a kid.
Bruce has told me tons of awesome stories about you.
I bet he has.
[JASON.]
I know it's none of my business, but he never said why you quit.
[GRUNTS.]
I guess I just couldn't cut it.
Are you thirsty? I'm gonna go check out the brew sitch.
- What? - The beer situation.
[PINGING.]
[CELL PHONE RINGING.]
You've got impeccable timing.
- Where the hell are you? - Chicago.
I thought you were coming back here.
Things got a little weird at our friend's apartment.
His name is Dr.
Adamson, by the way.
Doctor of what, I have no idea.
Let me guess.
He tried to kill you.
He tried to cook me breakfast, actually.
His friends tried to kill me.
Six of them.
I got the feeling there's more where they came from.
You took out six assassins by yourself? Not bad.
Robin's got some skills.
[GRUNTS.]
Any update on the family? Um, they're all dead.
- Kory.
- I didn't kill them.
I just walked in and they were, like, dead.
Their heads exploded.
Hell of a coincidence.
- I [SCOFFS.]
- Ah, fuck.
[GRUNTS SOFTLY.]
Are you okay? Just dealing with something.
Look, you guys need to get out here.
I'm at 888 North Lakeshore Drive.
It's less than an hour.
You'll be safe here.
- Are you sure? - It's a safe house.
It has "safe" right in the name.
Hey, Jason, thanks for the help back there.
But I'm good now.
You should head back to Gotham.
What the hell, man? I'm not Robin anymore.
Have a safe trip back.
You didn't have to do that.
- Yeah, I did.
And you should, too.
- Why? Because we're not animals in Bruce Wayne's private zoo.
You don't get it, man.
He did it for you.
For us.
In case anything ever happened, he could find us.
Thanks for stopping by.
Tell Bruce I'm gonna need the place for a couple of days.
He should be okay with it.
I'm not sure you really understand him, man.
I think I'm the one guy in the world that does.
Look, Jason, he might have you thinking that you're a partnership, but everything Bruce does is in the best interest of one person.
Bruce.
Time to go.
Sorry, man.
I can't.
He wanted me to show you these.
[DICK.]
How did you get these? [JASON.]
They were sent to the Gotham PD addressed to "Robin.
" Whoever sent them thinks you're still Robin.
I know these people.
[CROWD CHEERING.]
[INAUDIBLE.]
[CHEERING CONTINUES.]
[CHUCKLING.]
[BOTH GRUNTING.]
Come here, kiddo.
[BOTH LAUGHING.]
[YELLS.]
I worked with them at the Haly's Circus.
- [JASON.]
Before your parents were - Yeah.
[JASON.]
That must've sucked.
- He burns them with acid.
- Hydrofluoric acid.
[JASON.]
Calling card of the Maroni crime family.
- Harvey Dent, your parents - I know.
Tony Zucco worked for the Maronis when he killed my parents.
But they were put away years ago.
Why'd he do it? Haly owed the Maronis protection money.
Couldn't come up with the cash.
So my parents paid the debt with their lives.
Papers call this guy "the Melting Man," because he melts the flesh right off their bones.
Creepy as shit, huh? Any idea who this freak is? The man I'm thinking of is dead.
So that's a no.
[SIGHS.]
Have you checked back in with the police? Why would I go to the fucking cops? - Because five people were murdered.
- The cops are a joke, man.
There's two kinds, useless and dirty.
- Is that what Bruce says? - No, it's what I say.
They hit a dead end so they came crawling to Bruce and me.
As usual.
When Bruce realized who the victims were, he sent me to find you.
[CHUCKLES SOFTLY.]
[SIGHS.]
- You mind? - Sure thing.
[TYPING.]
Boom! [CHUCKLES.]
[DICK.]
Phone bill paid last month, utilities on.
Looks like he's still alive.
[DIALING NUMBER ON PHONE.]
[LINE RINGING.]
[VOICEMAIL.]
This is Clay Williams.
I'm not home right now, so please leave a message.
[BEEPS.]
Milwaukee's only an hour and a half from here.
I gotta go make sure he's safe.
- We're going on a road trip.
Excellent.
- Not us.
Me.
Look, I appreciate you bringing this to me.
I really do.
But there's no reason for you to come.
This is personal.
You're Bruce's Robin, not mine.
No, I'm my Robin.
- I don't need your help.
- You did back at that apartment.
[COMPUTER BEEPING.]
Hmm! [ELEVATOR DINGS.]
- [JASON.]
Who are your friends? - [DICK.]
Not important.
- Who's he? - Not important.
- Anybody want a brew? - Yeah, I do.
No, he doesn't.
No one wants a brew.
That can't be Adamson.
He's not Adamson.
Adamson's in the bathroom.
- Unconscious.
- Hi, I'm Rachel.
- Jason.
- Okay, who we all are doesn't matter right now.
Can we just chill out, relax, sit on the couch and watch TV or something? Yo, when did you get another one? - That one's mine.
- [GAR.]
Yours? - Wait, you're Robin, too? - I thought you were Robin.
- I am.
- He was.
[CHUCKLES.]
Okay, how many Robins are there? Are there a lot? 'Cause I would love to Okay, quiet.
Sit.
Bathroom.
- [WHISPERS.]
Can I be Robin? - Oh, my God.
- What happened to him? - I gave him something to help him sleep.
I kind of had my hands full.
Well, did he say anything? He said he works for something called "the Organization.
" And they work for Rachel's father.
He seemed to have people everywhere.
You sure you weren't followed? You sure you weren't? - Him? - Yeah.
[CHUCKLES.]
He's not with the Organization.
- He works for Batman, too? - Yeah.
He's my replacement.
Oh, good.
Yeah, that's good.
You said you didn't wanna be Robin anymore, right? - Right.
- All right, so problem solved.
Unless, of course, you do wanna be Robin.
In which case, you should be Robin.
Even though the new one's probably younger, and healthier and smarter.
I'm just trying to get used to the idea of being replaced.
Wow.
An honest answer, for once.
Well done.
What is he doing here, anyway? Some people I know were killed.
The killer's still out there.
There's someone I need to check on, make sure he's okay.
- So go.
- What about him? He is handcuffed and unconscious.
Pretty sure I can handle it.
Unless you want me to come with you.
No.
This is my problem.
I'll be back.
But I should probably talk to Rachel.
Oh, she's used to it by now.
- What about the other Robin? - He's comin' with me.
[CHUCKLES.]
And try not to kill this one, okay? I didn't kill them.
[SCOFFS.]
[MAN OVER RADIO.]
Then we got to the studio.
[WOMAN OVER RADIO.]
So you heard something in a bluegrass band, but didn't you wanna work with them? [MAN.]
Uh-huh.
[WOMAN.]
Hmm.
And you basically created a new genre.
What do you call it again? [MAN.]
Well, if you take bluegrass and jazz and put 'em together, you get "bluegrazz.
" Ain't that somethin'? [WOMAN.]
It was something so new and fresh, it took me by surprise.
[CELL PHONE VIBRATING.]
Your ears peak, your mind opens up to a whole new way of listening.
[MAN.]
Yes, that's the reaction I was hoping for.
[SIGHS.]
The place is called Corvo.
It's some kind of speakeasy.
Landlord said he bounces the late shift.
That's too bad.
Bouncers are assholes.
Clay's not.
And how would you know anyway? Uncle Ray would take me to bars with him all the time when I was little.
Everyone thought it was cute, till it wasn't.
He was a fun drunk.
Then he'd get stupid, then he'd start throwing punches Then the bouncers would kick our asses out.
Where were your folks? Mom was upstate.
Dad was downstate.
Uncle Ray was the man until he OD'd when I was 13.
- Where'd you go? - Wherever.
Foster care.
In and out of the system, the streets mostly after that.
[CHUCKLES.]
It's not all bad.
I survived.
Now look, man, we're living the dream.
[CLUB MUSIC PLAYING.]
Clay Williams workin' tonight? - VIP lounge.
- Okay.
- [SCOFFS.]
- There a problem? "Robert Plissken"? Nice try.
Come on, man, be cool.
Not tonight, snake.
I'm 19.
Okay, well, stay here.
I'll be right back.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER.]
- Excuse me.
- Yeah? So, uh, how does someone get into the VIP lounge? Give me the password.
"Haly's Circus.
" Dicky? Dicky! Oh, Lord, I can't believe it's you! - Is this you? - Yeah, it's me.
I can't breathe.
- Oh, damn.
- Oh, man.
[CHUCKLES.]
Oh! What in God's name are you doin' here? Can we talk? Murdered? And I'm worried you're next on the list.
You've seen anything weird at home? Any people following you? Not that I've noticed.
You still in touch with anyone from the circus? Since it shut down? I spoke to Abigail a few years ago after her husband died.
I wanted to get in touch with Percy but I could never find him.
After the [SIGHS.]
We all went our own separate ways.
Yeah.
I think the last time I saw any of them were at your parents' funeral.
I should've kept in touch.
Especially with you.
Hey, it goes both ways.
I'm just glad you're okay.
[UPBEAT MUSIC PLAYING.]
Okay, no excuses now.
We stay in touch.
[SIGHS.]
- Can't believe you're a cop.
- Detective, actually.
All I know is I'm just so proud of you, kiddo.
You know, I used to wonder all the time, what my life would be like if I'd stayed with you? You know, gone to a normal school, had some normal friends.
"Normal"? You mean "poor.
" 'Cause that's what it would've been.
Poor.
But look at how you turned out.
Perfect.
You look happy.
Are you? [CHUCKLES SOFTLY.]
Hey.
My bad.
Thought it was mine.
Let me buy you another one.
- It wasn't my drink.
- What the fuck are you doin'? I'm sorry, Mumford.
Did you say somethin'? - Do you want me to kick your ass? - I want you to try.
[CROWD EXCLAIMING.]
Shit.
Let's do this.
- Let's not.
- Back the fuck off.
I got this.
- Jas - [SCREAMING.]
Clay, call 911.
[ALARM BLARING.]
My phone.
[INDISTINCT CLAMORING.]
Faker got lucky.
[PANTING.]
[CELL PHONE RINGING.]
Clay, you okay? [MELTING MAN.]
No, he isn't.
It's good to finally talk to you, Dick Grayson.
You arrived right on schedule.
Who are you? You know.
It's not possible.
- Why not? - Because you're dead.
You must be thinking of my father.
Where's Clay? Who was that? [NEWSCASTER.]
This morning, federal authorities arrested Anthony Zucco on charges of racketeering and tax evasion.
The arrest marks the end of a five-year manhunt for the suspected murder and the man who police say ran the Gotham City branch of the Maroni crime family.
Zucco's lawyers issued a statement today saying, quote, "This is a witch hunt.
Our client, Mr.
Zucco, is innocent until proven guilty.
If the court has already made up its mind, then the Gotham City justice is no better than that of Batman himself.
" - Who's that? - [FEDERAL AGENT.]
That's his son, Nick.
I wanna talk to Zucco.
I'm afraid we can't let you do that, Mr.
Grayson.
We're stretching things even letting you in here.
Uh, but I want you to know that we appreciate all the help from Wayne Enterprises in tracking him down.
Lot of people are gonna be taken off the street because of this.
You're cutting him a deal? Tony Zucco knows the players.
He knows the locations.
And he knows where the bodies are buried.
He's the key to bringing down the entire Maroni family.
Instead of one guy, we're gonna take down 50, maybe more.
That man murdered my parents and you're letting him walk free? We can't prove that, Mr.
Grayson.
And he's not walking free.
He'll be in protective custody.
His whole family will have to be once the Maronis find out he snitched on them.
Things like this happen all the time.
I know it doesn't seem fair, Mr.
Grayson [DICK.]
This is why people like Batman do what they do.
You don't cut a deal with a guy like Tony Zucco.
You lock him in a jail cell until he takes his last breath.
Then you bury him under the jail and burn it to the ground.
[DRIVER.]
What the fuck? Jesus! - Watch out! - [TIRES SCREECHING.]
[GRUNTS.]
What the hell's happening? [GUARD.]
Someone's on the fucking roof.
Come on.
[GUN COCKING.]
- Oh, fuck! - [DRIVER.]
I don't see him! [GUARD.]
Keep looking.
- [GUNSHOTS.]
- [MEN GRUNTING.]
Oh, shit.
[GRUNTS.]
[GRUNTING.]
[GRUNTING IN EFFORT.]
[GRUNTS.]
Please.
How many people have you killed that begged for their life? Look, I'll give you whatever you want.
I want my parents back! Grayson.
[GRUNTS.]
Give me one reason not to.
One! [GRUNTING.]
[TONY GROANS.]
[GRUNTS.]
[GRUNTING.]
[EXCLAIMING IN PAIN.]
[GUN COCKS.]
[ZUCCO.]
The Maronis.
[GUNS FIRING.]
You gotta help me.
Please.
No.
[GUNSHOTS.]
I killed his father.
[JASON.]
The guy who murdered your parents? That's a win either way you look at it.
One less scumbag on the face of the planet.
Man, that must've felt awesome.
Yeah, that's the problem.
Hey, you want my advice? Don't be Robin.
All those years Bruce was helping me? He was turning me into a weapon, his weapon.
And he may have you convinced that you can get everything you ever wanted, but you can't unlearn what he teaches you and you can't control it.
Believe me, the price is too high.
[CELL PHONE CHIMES.]
- I gotta go.
- Where? I gotta take care of this by myself.
[SIREN WAILING.]
[GROANING.]
[GRUNTS.]
- [GASPS.]
- [SIZZLES.]
[MELTING MAN.]
That's close enough, Robin.
I'm the one you're looking for.
Let Clay go.
Dick? You're gonna be okay, Clay.
[MELTING MAN.]
No, he isn't.
He's going to die.
So are you.
You should thank me.
Death is better.
- What happened to you? - You did.
The feds told me what happened.
Robin hijacked my father's transport and offered him up to the Maronis.
After your little meltdown in the feds' office, it wasn't hard to link you to Robin.
I didn't know the Maronis would be there.
No, you wanted to do the honors.
Either way, it seems I have you to thank for what followed.
Seems your little act of revenge had consequences.
After my father was killed, the deal was off.
No more federal protection.
So, the Maronis came after my mother And my sister And my fiancée.
They all melted.
They tried to melt me, too.
So, you thought you'd even the score by killing my family.
That make you feel better? Did your fucking plan work? Beyond my wildest dreams.
When the acid strikes your skin, it doesn't burn.
It's much worse.
- It's like insects eating away at your flesh - [GRUNTING.]
burrowing inside of you.
I can still feel them crawling all over me.
I didn't want this to happen to you, Nick.
I'm not Nick anymore.
That's what the acid did for me.
It changed me.
- [SIZZLING.]
- [EXCLAIMING IN AGONY.]
You revealed your true self on that bridge.
Just like the acid peeled away the surface to reveal my true self underneath.
He's an innocent man.
- Let him go.
- No! He gave you an out, dumb-ass.
You should've taken it.
[BOTH GRUNTING.]
[GROANS.]
[JASON GRUNTS.]
[GROANS.]
[GUN COCKS.]
[BOTH GRUNTING.]
[JASON GROANING.]
Nice work.
Dude deserved what he got.
[PANTS.]
- [DICK.]
Are you okay? - Zylon fibers, man.
Oh, you're welcome, by the way, for saving your life.
And you're welcome for me saving your life.
[POLICE SIREN CHIRPS.]
- [DICK SIGHS.]
We have to go.
- I'll take care of it.
[CLAY GROANING.]
Clay, you okay? [DOOR BANGS OPEN.]
[COP 1.]
All right, fan out.
[COP 2.]
Unit Five on the scene, responding to reports of gunfire.
[COP 3 OVER RADIO.]
Roger that, Unit Five.
Additional units are en route.
[COP 2.]
Got nothin'.
[COP 4.]
Clear here.
[GRUNTING.]
[COP EXCLAIMS.]
[BOTH GRUNTING.]
[COP 4.]
Get back! We need to jump back! [GRUNTING.]
[GRUNTING.]
[CRIES OUT.]
Lights out, bitch! [COP GROANING.]
No! [GRUNTING.]
What do you think you're doing? They're cops.
That's the coolest part about being Robin.
Wearin' a mask.
I can do whatever the fuck I want.
Did you not just hear what I said? There is no way Batman's cool with beatin' up cops.
He isn't.
But I don't see him here.
The cops in Gotham kicked my ass every night.
Now I get to kick back.
You obviously have your own shit goin' on.
But you're gonna wake up one day and have no idea who you are.
Oh, coming from the guy screaming "I'm not Robin, I don't wanna be Robin" standing there in a fucking Robin suit, carrying that case all over the country! You wanna know the real difference between us? I know who I am, man.
I kick ass with Batman and I fucking love it.
But who the fuck are you? - Fuck you! - [COP GROANS.]
[DOOR OPENS.]
[DOOR CLOSES.]
[SIGHS.]
You could've told me about being Robin.
[SIGHS.]
I'm tryin' to give it up.
Does Bruce know? Know what? That you work with Batman? I don't.
Not anymore.
Bruce did right by you.
Didn't he? He did the best he could.
[DIALS PHONE.]
[LINE RINGING.]
[KORY.]
Hey.
- Hey, is Adamson awake? - Not yet.
- Are you okay? - Yeah, I am.
- I'm on my way back.
- About time.
How many Robins should I expect? None.
[GROANS.]
Welcome back.
Hmm.
It's time to talk.
Where's Rachel? [CHUCKLES.]
Doesn't matter.
You're not getting anywhere near her.
You can do anything you like to me.
You can kill me if you want.
I'm not talking to anyone but Rachel.
