was the preparation tournament
for what was to come.
- You know,
we ultimately fell short,
but I think
just the camaraderie
and, you know, us learning
the coaching staff,
them, you know, kind of seeing
what we're about
and coming together
and just being a real, like,
band of brothers,
I think that was
the biggest and,
you know,
probably most important thing
coming out of that Gold Cup.
- I think those lessons are
going to carry us even further.
- Approaching the friendlies
that we have left
leading up to the World Cup,
friendlies, yeah, but they're
not so friendly for us.
- In the grand scheme,
it's not a lot of time.
You have September, October,
November, March, May.
You know, 10 games you've got,
50 days maybe total together.
And then it's go time.
- No, I've said it before,
but fuck a friendly, you know?
There's no such thing
as a friendly.
Every chance
you're able to play,
it's your--it's your audition,
you know?
- You're only one
roster spot away,
you know, from being a part
of the World Cup roster
on home soil for the first time
in so long.
- A lot of us have done
everything that we can,
you know, training every day,
you know,
playing at our clubs
the best that we can.
- It's a competitive group
that we have,
and everyone wants to be there.
- With the friendlies,
it's the last chance,
the last opportunity
for all of us to show
why we deserve to be part
of the World Cup
and be a part of the team
going forward.

from the World Cup.
Yeah, we're going to have
a good ten days
and two games to kick off
the last little run here.
- In international soccer,
there are essentially
three types of competition.
You could be playing
in a tournament.
You could be playing
in qualifiers,
which get you
to those big tournaments.
Or you play in friendlies,
which are exhibition games.
These friendlies are very much
a proving ground.
They are places
for these players
to make an impression
on the coaching staff.

- We've had to, you know,
really understand and adjust
to what Mauricio
is wanting from us.
That's competition.
- [speaking Spanish]

- Poch,
he doesn't really have that
bias towards
what league you play in.
You know, we have guys here
that play in the Prem,
play in Bundesliga, play in
the top league in France.
It definitely gives me
a chip on my shoulder,
and I'm sure
all the other MLS guys
would probably say the same.
- You know, you want to make
your teammates see,
this guy's killing it.
I've got to step up my game.
- No one's spot's guaranteed.
I think
that's a good mentality
for the team to have.
Definitely for me
as an individual, you know,
it's nothing new.
It's something I've been
fighting for my whole life.

- I had my ACL injury
late April '24.
It was something
I didn't expect
to happen to me, you know?
[indistinct chatter]

You can't go back sides.
- I worked really hard
to come back to this camp
to play
with the national team again,
because, you know, I want to be
on time for the World Cup.
I feel like
this is the most important
tournament of our generation.
I feel like
I can really help the team,
and so I'm happy to be here.
- Oh, my God, Sergiño.

- I grew up in Almere
in the Netherlands.
Since I was young
and I could walk,
I always wanted to play
with a football.
- Sergiño was a withdrawn kid,
basically a loner.
They noticed that
at school too.
They asked me to put him
in a sport.
And of course,
since I played soccer,
I made sure
that he went in soccer.
- He was a tough coach.
My dad,
he was born in Suriname.
He grew up
in Brooklyn, New York,
and he fought
in the Vietnam War
and spent over 25 years
in the military.
- I was drafted.
I went to Vietnam.
What more patriotic can you be?
You've given your all
for the country.
You went to war
for the country.
You sacrificed yourself.
Those were the morals
and the principles
that were instilled in us,
and that's actually the key
of soccer.

- He was a bit hard on me,
but it helped me a lot.
- You got to do
what I ask you to do,
and then you can do
your own thing.

- I've always taught him,
once you have the ball,

- The way how I play football
is more European style.
- We have a problem.

that I have is

I lived on the other side
of this neighborhood first
when I was younger.
And now, I live on that side

I've lived here my whole life.
I'm pleased and honored
to have created my own field
over there,
and it's just, like,
street soccer, you know,
because that's what
we're doing here in Europe,
and especially
in the Netherlands, you know?

I always wanted
to do something back
for the community and to
create something for them
to even get more motivated
so they can play
and also dream
about their future.
So it's an amazing feeling,
you know?

you're more American
if you're not born over there,
because you had
the choice to choose,
and you chose America.
It's the same way
with Sergiño.

and I love to play
for the U.S. national team.
It's just a different type
of experience,
and I enjoy it to the fullest.

for the national anthem
with his hand over his heart
fighting for those colors,
the red, white, and blue,
the emotions right now,
even talking about it,
were unbelievable.

in a little bit of a rut,
but there's so many

and being like,
build off of it, build off
of it, build off of it.
I hate fucking losing,
so it's--
it's frustrating for me,
because you want it to come
together a lot quicker,
but we have to be
patient with the process.

under 21s,
but I always knew
about the possibility
that I might change one day.

to talk to Malik in Germany,
I saw in his eyes
that he had this hunger.

was part of my decision
to play for the U.S.
As a kid, you dream
of playing in a World Cup,
and then the World Cup came.

I took it as fuel.

and been difficult to be
at home missing out,
not being able to come and see

4 1/2 months post-op--
had a repair on a split
in my quad tendon,
and it's been difficult.
I've been, you know,
full training
and been involved
with the team,
but I'm still not
fully as sharp as I can be
and, you know,
trying to adapt my game
to be able to cope with that.
But off the pitch, doing pretty
much all I can in my spare time
to try and get it right.

It's a great feeling
to be back training
and seeing everyone.
But the reality is,
I'm not starting player
on the team at the moment,
and I've not played
a U.S. game for a year now.
So the main goal is to come
out of camp feeling better
than I did going into it,
and we've got friendlies
against two good teams.
I want to contribute
to winning those.

He's moved to New England to be
back in Major League Soccer.
He's playing with
the New England Revolution.
He made that move
to get back on the field
so that he could win back
this job with the U.S.

that at some point in training

although I'm not playing,
I can still lead by example.

you can be disappointed,
but you still have

From the outside,
it might seem like,
oh, he's got no chance
and there's only eight games,
so they're obviously
just going to run
with their strongest lineup
as much as they can.
But if I remember correctly,
it wasn't--
I don't even know
how many games
we had until the World Cup.
I think I only played four
of the eight games
leading into the World Cup
in '22.
It's not unfamiliar territory
to be counted out.
I'm going to just keep
going about my business.
I have tremendous self-belief.
That's just going
to continue to lift me
to the highest heights.
So if I do get it, though,
I'm going to take it.
I'm going to try
to run with it, you know,
because it's all I got.

what your contract is.
Every single person needs
to raise it a level,
and that happened this camp.

a huge camp for him,

I was still holding out hope

I'm now wondering if he's even

of 2019 that I wasn't
called into, and--
and yeah, it's tough.
It was a big hit to the ego.
The outlook to everybody else
in the rest of the world
is, oh, Matt's not
in the plans,
or he's not, you know,
at the camp.
If he was part of the plans,
he'd be there.
I've proven for so long
that I can be relied upon,
but I have
one or two bad games.

The pressure is high,
and then, you know,
you make a change.
But I don't feel like
it's out of reach.
You know what I mean?
I feel like it's right there
to be had.
- Now, don't look at it.
Head down.
- There's a window in March.
If you make March,
that gives you the opportunity
to have the platform to push
yourself into those roster
spots before the World Cup.
And if you're not
on those friendly rosters,
chances are you're not going
to be on that World Cup squad.
When March comes around,
with the margins being so thin,
I need to be there.
I need to be on that roster
if I want
my best chance
of playing meaningful games
at the World Cup in 2026.
I'll definitely be eagerly
awaiting that phone call
making sure
that I'm playing to the best
of my ability at that time
so that they have
no choice but to call me in.

- There have been
so many goalkeepers
who have been called in.
The fact that there are
still four goalkeepers at
this November camp shows
that there's no decision
that's been made
at that position.
And so Matt Freese
has to remember
what it took to get
into this job,
and he's got to do
everything he can to keep it.

Growing up, I played
pretty much every other sport.
Soccer was probably
my favorite one to play
but not the one I was best at.
When I grow up, I want to be
a professional soccer player,
and that's my favorite sport.
I loved it so much, so I put
a lot more work into soccer
than any other sport.
I would wake up
before high school.
My mom would drive me
to the field,
and I would just
play by myself.
- Matt was looking
at a number of colleges
with soccer in mind.
Now, of all the schools, if
you're going only for soccer,
you might not choose Harvard.
He chose Harvard.
His older brothers had gone.
His dad had gone.
- After my freshman year
of college,
I had a conversation
with my mom,
and it was clear at that point
that professional soccer
was not just in my future,
but it was my present.
Yes, I could finish my college
in a normal time frame,
and stay there,
and then go pro.
But I didn't want
to just go pro.
I wanted to get
to the national team.
And the earlier
you become a pro,
the earlier those looks
start to happen.
You know, it's a big regret,
but I didn't really include
my dad in that conversation.
I knew his stance on it.
He was a neurosurgeon
and wasn't the biggest fan
of me choosing
this career path.
- Matt left Harvard 2019
when he signed with the Union.
I say dropping out--
that was my phrase for it--
but leaving college
to turn pro.
And I get it, but it was still
a lot to--to figure out.
He talked to me for a while.
He said, I've managed my
career so far, which he had.
He had been so mindful,
purposeful,
strategic, whatever word.
Trust me, I've got this.
- Freese is up.

- He's a homegrown player,
Union Academy.
- I wasn't sure that it was
going to pay off,
but I wanted to give it
everything I could.
- Patrizio waiting for it,
just settles it down.

- Over time, my dad started
to come around to it.
He saw me play
in New York City, which was,
I think, a really big moment
for him.
He was like, oh, my God.
Like, he's playing
at Yankee Stadium.
Like, this is cool.

Freshman year of college,
he was diagnosed with cancer.
In the summer of '21,
he passed away,
um, which was--
you know, it was tough.

I think now,
four years after he passed,
if he were to be alive
and see what was happening,
there is literally no question
in my mind
that he would be proud.
He was also a very big fan
of America,
and being able to put on
the jersey,
the U.S. crest
and the U.S. flag,
I feel like my dad
has got to be, like,
looking and seeing
some of this happen,
and it just makes me happy.

And then to have not played

I probably played like 15, 20
minutes, something like that.
There were times
where I came to my room
and just yelled into a pillow.

on my knees praying.

And through that,
I've had to recognize

as much as I want to,
but what can I do for the team?

And it really messes up
your mind.
Fast-forward a few months
and a lot of different
recovery methods
and stuff here and there
and treatments, injections,
time away, time playing.
I feel like there's a big hump
that I had to get over,
and I feel like I'm over it.
And lately, like,
I've been feeling probably
the best I've felt
in, like, a really long time.

on the pitch worrying
if I'm going to be in pain.
I just look forward to actually
playing and doing good,
even just see what I need
to work on
going into the World Cup too.

And I could feel how happy
everybody was for me,
because they know how hard
I've been working

My last three games for the
national team were all losses,
and that's, like,
a sour pill to swallow.
It got to a point
where I'm thinking, man,
if I never get the chance
to play ever again,
like, for the national team,
my last game is, like,
just shit.

and he let me know that he is
going to be starting.

And I feel really close,
and I feel like
we're in a good place.

would mean everything to me.
Since the day that I missed out
on the last one,
being able to be in that '26,
going to be, you know,
one of the proudest moments
of my life, definitely the
proudest moment of my career.
