[narrator] Throughout history,
humans have existed in groups.
But what happens
when these lone-wolf survivalists
that prefer to work alone
are forced to work together
as part of a pack?
This is all you've done
since I've been here.
I'm not puttin' up with it.
You will not treat me
as some submissive little bitch!
[narrator] Welcome to Outlast,
the survival competition
with a million-dollar prize on the line.
[woman] You may quit at any time.
If you choose to quit,
shoot a flare into the sky
and you will be removed from the valley.
[narrator] The only rule is that you must
be a part of a team in order to win.
There is no law here.
Yes, there is!
This is my mission. Let me run it.

[narrator] These 16 players
will not only have to survive
the unforgiving wilderness of Alaska
Last night was the closest
I've been to hypothermia.
[man, over radio] We need a medic.
Contestant down. He's unresponsive.
[narrator] they'll also have to place
their faith in complete strangers
and survive as part of a team.
- [woman 1] You go, girl! Whoo!
- [woman 2] You go, girl!
[narrator] Will they sacrifice
and band together for the greater good?
Yeah! We're gonna eat good tonight, girl.
[narrator] Or will they resort
to selfish tactics
to defeat their opponents?
- [man 1] All our stuff's stolen.

of the Alaskan wilderness

[Justin] I'm here to play the game.
I'm here to win.
[atmospheric music playing]
[birds chirping]
[Javier] I was scrolling
through Instagram one night,
and I saw an advertisement that said,
"Do you have what it takes
to survive out here?"
Four months later, I'm here.
[narrator] Sixteen players are about
to compete in a game of survival
for a potential million-dollar prize.
[Andrea] I don't really know much
about this show yet.
What I imagine
is like an adult Hunger Games.
[narrator] They have been dropped off
in a remote part of Alaska
with only the clothes on their backs
and told to await further instructions.
[Andrea] Drop yourself into
a remote location and fend for yourself
with people that you don't know about.
Sounds like an amazing time to me.
[narrator] These players come
from a wide array of backgrounds
[Amber] I'm a recovered heroin addict.
I'm a felon.
I'm a survivor.
Through that, I've seen
some really dark sides of humanity.
[narrator] with varying degrees
of survival skills.
[Tim] My survival skills consist of mostly
just growing up
watching survivalist TV shows.
[narrator] But they share a willingness
to endure the brutal Alaskan conditions.
[Corey] Alaska has been
my dream trip since I was a child.
I hike, I hunt, I camp.
I try to get as far away from people
as I can, most of the time.
[narrator] What they do not know yet
is that the only way
to succeed in this game
will be as part of a team.
[Javier] I've been a nomad
for nearly 20 years.
I'm single. No kids, no pets.
I'm pretty much free.
[Jill] I'm the boss. I own my own company.
I've been my own entrepreneur
since I was 22 years old.
I don't know how to take orders.
I don't know how to have a boss.
[Brian] I'm coming out here to win.
Anybody who knows me and my family
knows damn well we really need this money.
[narrator] The players have arrived
in Alaska in the fall.
A season of high rainfall,
rapidly dropping temperatures,
and increased activity from the area's
dense population of bears.
In a few short weeks,
snow will begin to fall as winter sets in.
Maybe the players won't survive that long.
For now, they can only wait and see
what the game has in store for them.
[blades whirring]
[man] That's a helicopter.
[narrator] Players arrive with nothing.
Their only source of equipment
are these cargo crates
- [man 1] How badass is that?
- [man 2] Right?
[narrator] parachuted
onto the field via helicopter.
[Brian] Gotta be somethin' good!
[narrator] Some will contain supplies,
others will contain challenges.
[man] Yeah, let's do it.
[narrator] And the final drop will contain
a potential million-dollar prize
for any players and team that remain.
[Jill] Game time, boys!
[narrator] With the first drop in place,
the game begins now.
[intense music playing]
- [woman 1] Wait, are these people too?
- [woman 2] Yes.
[man] Seeing a lot of hoof tracks.
- [woman 2] Yeah.
- [Seth] This is the cleanest we will be.
[woman 2, chuckling] Right.
[man] I see the enemy.
[laughter]
[Jill] What do we have here?
- [Tim] What's your name?
- Corey.
- Corey, nice to meet you.
- Nice to meet you.
- What's your name?
- Javier.
- [woman] Whoo!
- All right. "Welcome to the game."
"You are stranded in the wild."
"There will be no voting off
of contestants in this game."
"The only way out
is to personally give up."
"You may quit at any time."
"If you choose to quit,
shoot a flare into the sky
and you will be removed from the valley."
"You must remain a part of a team
throughout the entire game
in order to win."
"You can change teams at any time,
but you cannot win this challenge alone."
"Start with these provided kits."
"Be on the lookout
for additional resources."
"Choose a team of four right now."
[Andrea] All right, this is it.
- [Jill] "Choose swiftly
- Rambo.
and find a suitable place to settle."
"The cold and the darkness
are rapidly approaching."
I'm still reading the damn piece of paper.
I feel somebody grab my shirt.
So I'm on this person's team.
I'm not sure who that is.
- [Jill] We have one too many.
- [Dawn] Two too many.
Two too many.
There's a lot of judging a book
by the cover out here.
[Corey] I can't believe
we picked our team.
When you don't know somebody,
that's about all you have to go on.
- Let's do it.
- [Jordan] Yep, let's do it.
- All right.
- I'll go.
- I'll go.
- Just
We got this.
[Dawn] We were the last team picked.
Do you realize that?
Yeah.
I had a complete moment of freezing,
and it took me a second
to understand what was happening.
- There's too many here.
- I'll go.
- I'll go.
- Come here.
We just met a bunch of strangers out here.
So, we were the remainder
of the group left over.
If we're gonna put our eggs
in a basket, let's put it in this basket.
- [Dawn] Absolutely.
- [laughter]
[narrator] To create
a level playing field,
the players have divided themselves
equally into four teams.
Alpha
Bravo
Charlie
and Delta.
- [Joel] Let's move out.
- Okay. We're ready.
Let's go.
[narrator] With less than an hour until
the sun sets and the temperature drops,
the players must head off
to find suitable camps.
- [Joel] First order of business
- [Dawn] Finding shelter for the night.
[intense music playing]
[narrator] Each team is assigned
a quadrant of the playing field.
They can establish their base camp
anywhere within that area.
To establish their base,
they have been given
identical gear sets consisting of
- Yes!
- There it is.
a hatchet.
- A knife.
- It's sharp.
[narrator] A tarp.
- A wool blanket.
- That's a big wool blanket.
[narrator] A flashlight.
[Jill] Oh, man!
- [narrator] A bow with eight arrows.
- That's what's up.
- [narrator] A medical kit.
- First aid. There we go.
- [narrator] A flint.
- That's our life.
- [narrator] Two tin cups.
- To boil in.
[narrator] A map.
[Seth] We can find our way.
[narrator] Bear spray.
Everybody should at least carry
one of these at all times.
Yep.
[narrator] And of course, four flares,
one for each player, should they choose
We ain't opening this.
- Not at all.
- to quit the game.
You guys can take this back.
[Amber]
There's a game trail up here, y'all.
- [Lee] Got it.
- [Justin] Perfect.
- Careful. Move slow.
- [Lee] Okay.
- [Justin] Slow is smooth
- [Lee] Smooth is fast?
- [Justin] smooth is fast.
- [grunts]
Right here.
[Justin] Not pumped at all.
There's no resources.
It's almost four o'clock.
I'd say we probably got
about 45 minutes left of daylight.
[Justin] We're in the middle of Alaska,
in the middle of a rainforest.
I saw a clearing as we were coming in.
¡Vamos!
In this environment,
in how unforgiving it is,
the most callous person is gonna struggle.
[narrator] When temperatures dip
beneath 30 degrees Fahrenheit,
humans can only survive
about three hours in the open
before hypothermia sets in.
With sunset rapidly approaching
- [Justin] Go ahead, ladies. We'll follow.
- [narrator] Alpha must build a shelter
before the temperature drops even more.
We're trying to get shelter built,
which is one of the toughest things,
especially in a harsh environment
like this.
- [Lee] Watch your feet. Keep looking down.
- [Jill] Yes.
- [Lee] How you doin', Justin?
- Good.
[Justin] I've been fortunate enough
to utilize a skill set in the outdoors,
hunting, fishing, trapping,
and especially in the survival game.
[narrator] An ideal campsite
has flat ground,
access to water,
and natural protection from the elements.
[Jill] We may still have to go
a little bit farther.
[narrator] So far, none of the terrain
they've seen meets those requirements.
[Jill] This really looks like shit, guys,
but we could set up shelter here.
Save some daylight.
There's a good overhanging
with these limbs.
[Justin] I say we push on for another
five minutes to see what's over this bit.
- I like the original plan.
- We know where this is at.
It may rain tonight.
So, if we've got what we have
and we bring it into this bank,
the water should shed off of it.
Then this is naturally
gonna help us with water deterrent.
We can't build a fire right here.
Well, I'm sure we could but
We don't really know each other
well enough to dig our claws in
when we're in a disagreement
or have conflicting ideas.
But I definitely foresee
there being some Type A clashes
in the team that we have.
It's a little bit flatter up here,
up on the top.
[Justin] I'm just thinking
of how we can each sleep.
I'm out here for myself,
but in order to win this thing,
I've gotta become more of a team player
rather than the lone wolf.
- [Jill] What do you think, Justin?
- [scoffs]
Okie dokie.
[narrator] Nine hundred meters away,
at neighboring Bravo Camp, a clear leader
[Javier] This is devil's club.
Don't touch it.
begins to emerge.
It'll [bleep] up your hand.
[Corey] Watch every step.
We don't need a twisted ankle
on the first day.
Oh, this is a perfect spot.
- [Javier] Better than the other.
- [Corey] Yes.
Keep an eye out.
- We need some dry limbs from higher.
- [Corey] Yeah.
- Put 'em in the pocket.
- [Tim] Okay.
"Put 'em in the pocket," he says.
[narrator] Unlike Alpha, Bravo
wastes no time in choosing a campsite
and beginning to build a shelter.
I'm gonna get that rock
and start clearing this out.
I've been doing
outdoor construction my whole life.
I'll be the workhorse.
I'll build the shelters.
I'll be getting the firewood.
I'm gonna just keep going.
When you clean this stuff,
rip all this out and push it out of here.
[narrator] Under Javier's guidance
Cover that whole side of the tree.
Bravo Team is using two fallen trees
as the foundation of their structure.
- Want me to drape this one over?
- Yeah.
Turn it upside down like so,
and the water seems
to bead off of it better.
[narrator] They're adding
alderwood trees for their structure
and evergreen branches
for their natural insulation
and moisture-wicking properties.
That's good for either over,
uh, or underneath the wood.
- I don't want it to get holes.
- Yeah.
The wolves need a leader
in their pack, you know.
So, go ahead, let it be Javier.
I think it'll flow a lot more smoothly
having a guy to make the decisions.
Eventually, if we're gonna use the canvas,
we can put thinner ones this way.
[Tim] Like cross bracing
or just crossing it?
But then once again, clear it with Javier.
[Tim chuckles]
Okay, so two on fire
and one collecting long sticks?
[Tim] Yeah, we could do that.
I've traveled alone for a very long time.
I know I work well alone,
so that'll be the most challenging aspect
of this whole competition.
Working in a team with others.
- You know how to find fatwood, right?
- [Tim] What's fatwood?
[laughing] Are you kidding me? Oh my God!
I don't sugarcoat my words.
Constructive criticism
was what I was raised on.
If you pull all this shit off,
fatwood will be the hard stuff.
That means that the resin came down
from the tree after it died,
and the resin gathered
and collected in there.
- No shit?
- That's gonna help me start the fire.
I'm known to be straightforward.
- I need a lot as big as your thumb.
- Lots of tinder?
- Lots of tinder.
- Roger.
So, I hope to be the warm person instead
of the cold and harsh person to deal with.
[Corey] I'll go look for driftwood.
Driftwood is pretty wet.
The wood that's standing straight up,
any of those lower limbs,
they're gonna be more dry than driftwood.
I've always said, one of these days
I'm gonna go out to Alaska
and explore and camp and hunt,
so I'm lucky to be out here.
Oh, squirrel.
I very much like being on my own.
It's my happy place.
Oh, totally missed 'em.
I know I'm a good fisherman.
I know I'm a good hunter.
I don't know about plants
and berries and mushrooms.
It's about the driest I could find.
It should burn.
[narrator] With the tarp in place,
Javier is hoping his design will work
to trap heat inside the shelter.
When the heat goes that way,
it goes into the hole.
[narrator] If they can start
a fire before nightfall,
when the temperature will drop severely.
Get as many sticks as possible.
We have enough pieces
to create some good heat.
[Brian] I gotta get more of these.
We don't have enough.
We don't have much light,
so keep that shit coming.
[Tim chuckles] Our esteemed leader,
it seems.
Somebody's gotta do it.
Hey, come up here and look, just to see.
I mean it's
Nothing's gonna be ideal. It's

I grew up in a very poor family
that was not loving.
So, I've spent a lot of my life
trying to prove my worth.
But see how this is kind
of a natural tent.

- [Jill] Let's just do something with that.
It's pushed me to learn in every aspect
that I possibly could get my hands in.
I'm Jill, but I'm the jack-of-all-trades.
If there isn't anything up forward,
up there, we can come back.
Right now, I think we need shelter.
We all know we can't survive alone
out here and complete the game.
If we're still gonna look,
we don't have much time left.
I'm a detective.
It's what I do for a living.
So, it's probably gonna make me
a little bit more fierce.
- Indecisiveness
- [Lee] Yeah.
is one of my pet peeves,
just so y'all know.
- Let's do it.

I'm concerned
about the other gal from Kentucky. Jill.
She's definitely pretty tough.
[Jill] Hey, Lee, come on back!
[Lee] I'm okay!
[Justin] But right now, we have
to move fast and make a decision
to get a shelter built to set up
and be ready for the evening.
Let me go underneath this tree,
see what's on the other side
and I'll come back.
[narrator] So far, Team Alpha
has lived up to their name
as a team full of alphas butting heads.
We're trying to stay together!
[narrator] But their stubbornness
has cost them valuable time.
Can you open that?
[narrator] So they settle
on erecting shelter against the hillside
where Jill advised.
Tie the tarps into this bank.
The water will shed
right over the top of it.
[Justin, laughing] This doesn't look
like an ideal place to sleep.
[narrator] The Neka River region
is classified as a rainforest,
receiving an average
of 60 inches of rainfall per year.
These teams must continue to work quickly
constructing shelter or risk being
not just cold, but cold and wet.
- Charlie Team
- [Angie] Careful on your left.
[narrator] also searches for ground
suitable to build camp.
[Nick] Ooh!
Okay.
This spot looks good back here.
Yeah, this spot.
- We can find wide pole branches.
- Yeah.
And we can set up a frame
to put the tarp over.
I'm a school wrestling coach.
I always end up moving
towards a leadership role.
That's what I'm good at.
I let 'em know, this is what
it's gonna be like, what I need.
- We can set up a shelter
- There's just so much devil's club, dude.
So much in here.
- What do you think about this?
- [Nick] Anywhere we can build a fire.
I grew up outdoors.
Yeah, so I was a military brat,
going from place to place.
I'm really good with a team,
but I like to take charge.
- [Seth] Lean-to style?
- [Nick] Yeah, and stake some pegs.
- [Seth] Yeah, absolutely.
- [Angie] Okay.
[narrator] Charlie Team has run cordage
between two trees
and is building a basic lean-to.
[Nick] So far, so good.
[narrator] Nick fashions makeshift stakes
to secure the bottom into the ground
and keep their sleeping area dry.
[Nick] I want it to hit and dribble
any water down to the ground,
not come back inside.
Okay.
I worry about Nick.
There is always an alpha male
who thinks they're the one
who needs to run everything and
[sighs]
[Nick sighs] I got an idea.
We build a fire right here, and we find
something to reflect the heat.
Build a wall right here,
fire pit right around there,
like line this with rocks.
Um, I don't know
where we're gonna find stones.
There's one type of person
I don't get along with.
The type that doesn't pull their weight.
I abhor that.
And if you can't rely on them,
we might have problems, for real.
[narrator] Nick has an idea
on how to improve their shelter
by adding supports to the front flap.
[Nick] If we can do that, it gives us more
square footage. We put the fire here.
[narrator] But that may have to wait.
[Nick] We're gettin' dark
and we're running short of daylight.
We need to get a fire started.
We need firewood,
so that way, at least
when it's going, it's drying.
I was actually in the Texas State Guard,
and a lot of the men were like,
"You're a female.
What you say doesn't matter."
[Nick] This stuff is just never gonna dry.
That's one of my biggest fears.
If I'm on a group
and I'm just the only female.
But there is another female
on the team. Thank God.
[laughs]
- How's that?
- [Andrea] Yeah, it's something we can use.
I think being an older person
in this kind of environment
definitely gives me an advantage
because I can endure a lot.
Um, being on big mountains,
being in cold weather,
being, um,
without a lot of food. [chuckles]
A lot of people,
especially younger people,
might not have that mental grit
and be able to just hunker down
and bear through it.
I can't wait for the chance to test myself
and to see how far I can go.

[Angie] Oh, yeah. You see the rainbow?
[Seth] Good vibes on the first day.
[Angie and Seth laughing]

[narrator] To Charlie's east,
only hundreds of meters away, Team Delta
- [Paul] Behind the trees there.
- [narrator] moves into their quadrant
[Paul] It looks kind of open back there.
Shelter us from the wind.
[narrator] and finds an area
they believe is suitable for camp.
[Paul] Look at this magical sunset forest.
What do y'all think?
[Jordan] I think it's a great idea.
We're the outcasts
because when the teams were formed,
us four weren't picked.
- I don't know what to call this.
- Those are for
You can do stump shooting with 'em,
but also hit squirrels and rabbits.
- [Jordan] Paul is our hunter.
- [Dawn, whispers] I'm actually a chef too.
- [laughs]
- [Joel] Oh no.
[Jordan] Dawn is just so knowledgeable on
what we're able to turn into food here.
I'm in the Marine Corps,
and Joel is an engineer.
Outcast.
Ha ha, everyone else.
That kind of bit you in the ass.
[Jordan] These guys are ready.
They probably need to be cut to length.
[narrator] Typically, these lone wolves
would be building campsites for one.
But with limited daylight,
Delta Team is quickly falling
into complementary roles.
[Jordan] Out in this environment,
this isn't a place
that you can just sit and think about it.
What you need to do is get going.
[narrator] Using the ridgepoles
that Joel has cut
Those ridgepoles turned out nice.
They did.
[narrator] and the cordage that Jordan
salvaged from the parachute drop
Try to use as little as possible.
[narrator] they raise two angled braces
to hold up their tarp.
I've spent a lot of time hunting
and fishing, so I feel at home.
My background from the military
is a huge advantage.
[narrator] But the knowledge
that these teammates
may not always remain teammates
Here. No, under.
[narrator] is never far from their mind.
[Jordan] I move
with purpose and direction.
Either follow me or go against me.
- [Joel] Wow, this is actually
- [Paul] Enough room for everyone?
[Joel] It's coming together, yeah.
Growing up in Eastern Kentucky, we grew
up poor. It was hard around the home.
You didn't know it
'cause everyone was poor.
We've done this stuff for survival.
This will work as a snare.
Oh, we will be eating squirrel.
[Joel] Oh, yeah.
[Paul] There are times where,
if you didn't put meat in the freezer,
you struggled to eat that winter,
no exaggeration.
I came a long way from that,
from my roots,
and I just wanna see
if I'm still that guy,
just connect with,
you know, my upbringing.
Reach me the axe. I'll clean this out.
Get us a place to start a fire,
if you're doing this.
From a team standpoint,
I get along with just about everyone.
But I struggle with people who are brash
and just real pushy
and sort of overstep their bounds.
What did we do to deserve this?
But once it rains, then yeah, not so much.
[narrator] As day one draws to a close,
all four teams
have constructed basic shelters.
While teams Alpha and Bravo have used
the natural terrain to their advantage,
teams Charlie and Delta have opted
for lean-to structures on flat ground.
And with the Alaskan sun
setting in at dusk,
the only way to combat
the inevitable freezing temperatures
will be with a fire.
Gettin' a fire to ignite
is gonna be pretty tough.
[Tim] Startin' to get low on daylight.
Everything's completely saturated.
The ground's wet and the air's wet.
[Javier] Our adrenaline is pumping.
We're burning a lot of calories.
But we need to get this fire going.
[Angie] We need to get this done quick.
Ugh.
Okay.
- [Jill] Get in there.
- [narrator] Alpha and Bravo
[Javier] Come on, baby.
Goddamn you.
[narrator] have not figured out
how to solve this damp puzzle.
[Jill] This is all of the moss rolled up.
So, you think it's not
that damp anymore, right?
[narrator] Neither the moss
that Alpha has gathered
[Jill] I cannot get it to go.
[narrator] nor the small wood chips
that Bravo is using
are dry enough to catch a spark.
[Javier] Come on, baby, keep it going.
No, son of a bitch. I smothered it.
[blows]
[Brian] This place is a gigantic sponge.
We won't find anything dry.
- You know how to do So
- Yeah. Oh my gosh.
- [Nick] You do it on the side.
- [Angie] Yeah.
Flick it with, like, your wrist.
[Angie] I have some concerns with Nick.
I'm not just some female that's here
to bow out when I've had enough.
You know, I'm here for the long run,
and I hope he sees that.
[Nick] Hold on.
- [Seth] It didn't take.
- [Nick] Hold on.
You wanna fluff that cotton?
- [Angie] That came from the kit?
- [Nick] Yep.
[narrator] With no rules against it,
Charlie is attempting to solve
their wet kindling problem
by using cotton balls
from their medical kit as a fire starter.
- [Nick] There you go.
- There we go.
[Angie] There's no rules to the game,
but that's survival. It's the same thing.
- [Nick] Feed it so slow.
- [Angie] Yeah.
So it's just being smart
and making sure you take advantage
of everything possible.
[laughter]
[Angie grunts, laughs]
- I knew I picked a good team.
- Yeah.
- [Nick] We have fire and a shelter, son.
- That's right.
[Nick] And it's day one, son!
- [Angie] Yes.
- [Nick] Day one!
[both] That's teamwork!
[narrator] Nearby, Delta
has found the same workaround.
I'm feeling good
about what we have set right here.
[Paul] There we go.
- [Jordan] A roof, a fire
- [Joel] Yep.
[Jordan]
And it's been a third of a day for us.
I think we're in good shape.
This is gonna be a good first night.
[Javier]
Am I the only one that's cold here?
[Tim] I'm trying to keep that
in the back of my head. Uh
Yeah, sounds like
we're pretty [bleep], boys.
[Brian] We're gonna be in trouble.
[tense music playing]
Ugh!
[Lee] I'm freezing my ass off.
[grunts]
[Justin] Are you guys sleeping?
[Jill] No, obviously not.
- [Angie] It got cold.
- [Nick] No shit. It just dropped.
Did you [bleep] feel that?
[Angie] Dude, it did drop. I'm cold.
[Seth] Yeah.
[narrator] To make matters worse,
it seems the freezing cold
[distant roaring]
isn't the only thing
posing a threat to the players tonight.
[distant roaring]
[Seth] Dude.
[Angie] Those are very close.
[Jordan] Do you smell that?
[Dawn] Yeah, I smell it.
[Jordan] I'm catching a strong whiff.
I think something was moving by.
[distant growl]
[narrator] The brown bears of Alaska
aren't just prominent here
[Jordan] I think I hear something
moving around over there.
[Joel] Yeah, I do too.
[narrator] they're prevalent.
With a whopping 2.5 bears per square mile,
this area is the highest region
for bear per square mile
- [roar]
- in the world.
[distant roaring]
[Brian]
There's something [bleep] big out there.
[bear roaring]
[Javier] That's a bear.
A bear's nearby.
[Brian] Be on the lookout.
I got my spray in my hand.
I'm definitely not sleeping.
[atmospheric music playing]

their first night
in their new Alaskan home.
Last night was tough. It was cold.
First morning
[chuckling]
in our shelter.
Bunch of big spoons
and little spoons in this mug.
It was tight
in our little nine by nine dome.
[Corey] Oh, everybody was snoring
a little bit, here and there.
[Tim] I don't snore.
Uh, pretty cold and wet.
- [laughter]
- Well, you breathe real heavy.
[breathing heavily]
[laughs] I sound like I'm dying.
It was really roughing it
for the first night.
[Brian] My butt cheeks
were like two ice cubes, man.
It was the worst sleep I ever had.
You guys are lucky I only had
to get up and pee three times.
[narrator] Even with a fire for warmth,
teams Charlie and Delta
faced a difficult night.
[Jill] Come on.
I'm really tired. [chuckles]
I got no sleep.
[Seth] Last night kinda sucked.
The ground was too uneven
to really get comfortable for me.
[Jordan] First night
was an eye-opener, absolutely.
Alaska gets dark.
In the middle of the night, about
one o'clock, we all woke up freezing.
[Jordan] Our fire started to go down.
We started to run out of firewood.
So, last night, it got real.
It grounded us a bit more. We're not
as invincible as we thought we'd be.
[atmospheric music playing]
[narrator] Charlie Team managed to keep
their fire going throughout the night
[Angie] Dude, it was roaring all night.
[narrator] but their makeshift
water collector
[Angie] We got a sip.
has not fared as well.
[Nick] If we follow, there's a confluence
of streams in the marshland right here.
[Seth] For day two, my biggest concern
is finding clear drinking water,
'cause we're surrounded
by brackish tidal pools right now.
There may be a really good
hunting spot over there.
There's a lot of bear scat.
There's a lot of deer sign.
- [Seth] But there's water?
- There's water.
- That's the big part.
- I wanna visit.
I grew up on 250 acres
over at my dad's house,
where I was taught how to survive.
Then I had my grandparents' house
I got to hunt on almost every day.
I was a sergeant in the Marine Corps,
so I can adapt to almost any situation.
I'm hungry. I quit my job for this.
I'm out here to win it, baby.
That's where we'll find water.

We really mesh well as a team.

I bring a lot of practical experience
to fill those gaps
to make my team stronger.

My focus right now
is on the Rule of Threes.
You have about three hours
with exposure to last
if you don't have proper shelter.
You can only last
about three days without water
and about three weeks without food.
[Angie] What do you think, Andrea?
[Andrea] It's stagnant.
So, obviously,
we have to get a fresh water source.
There's not gonna be anything there.
[Andrea] I'm gonna try to be the workhorse
and try to be the glue
that holds the team together.
[Nick] Hold on.
[Angie] What do we have here?
Is it fresh?
[Nick] I don't want there to be a beaver
dam up there, and we're eating its poo.
It's not good to get giardia.
[Andrea] I got this.

[narrator] The team is caught
off guard by Andrea's risk.
It's clear, and it's moving, so
[narrator] While moving water
is better than sitting water,
it can still pose a serious risk
of bacterial contamination
or even parasites.
Being out here, water is a real big risk.
She drank a little bit of it.
It's okay. I mean, hopefully not enough
to just get sick-sick.
Lack of fast-moving water around here,
close by, is a problem.
So, this is gonna be the boil stuff.
[Lee] Well, night one,
Alaska, in the books.
Once we get to a different location,
see what's in the area
[Jill] Are we moving-moving?
[narrator] After a disastrous
first night on uneven ground
and with no apparent water source nearby
[Amber] Maybe we could walk down the beach
and try to find a better spot.
[Jill] Yeah.
[narrator] Alpha
decides to move camp.
[Amber] The roots underneath us
got quite uncomfortable.
[narrator] Another day without water
will put them even further behind
in the survival Rule of Threes.
Three days without water,
three weeks without food.
And right now,
we're behind the other teams.
[Lee] I have a broad skill set
that every Marine has.
One of the things you learn
from the military
is that if you're the one
that's gonna set out a plan,
you have to be 100% confident.
Jill, she picked our area.
It was completely uninhabitable.
So, my plan for improvement today
is taking the lead on our team.
I have lived out in the rain for a month,
and I've come through the other side.
If we can get elevated
off the floor at our next place,
that'll definitely help to add comfort.
[Jill] They tried to blame me.
I have to be able
to make a decision for my team.
- We do have everything, correct?
- Let's take that trail.
- That's the least path of resistance.

[Jill] I'm definitely not the submissive
female on this game board.
I run this show however I want.
[narrator] As Alpha explores,
across the river they see smoke
They got their fire going.
signaling to them that an opposing
team has managed to create fire
when they have failed to.

But how much energy
did you burn all night long?
- Rather be uncomfortable on night one
- I mean, we're rested.
[Amber] I know that
I can take on this wilderness
because I've been through a lot worse.
I was shot in the face by the man I loved
with a 22-caliber gun.
Luckily, he was about 15 feet away,
so it went straight through.
I wish I could say that's the worst thing
that's happened to me, but it's not.
I've seen some really dark sides
of humanity.
It's made my senses highly aware.
[Justin] This looks interesting.
[Amber] It's kinda hard to see.

They're pretty tough.
I got my eye on Lee,

It's not level,
but if we sleep with our head up,
just like we did last night

So far, he seems
to want to be more solitary.

Bravo Team takes a break
from fire building

[narrator] While Brian and Corey
pick wild berries,
Javier and Tim explore the beach.
[Javier] It looks deep there.
I wanna go to the shallow part.
[Tim] Yeah.
Are we just looking for crabs and shit?
[Javier] We're looking
for anything that's edible.
It's been roughly 24 hours
since my last civilized, human meal.
Found different types of seaweed that were
left behind from the tide moving out.
- This stuff tastes clean and crisp.
- Yeah.
But I would love some meat.
[Javier] Okay, so there's a pool here.
This is where bottom-feeders get trapped.
You typically tap on the shell.

If I can't open it
with my hands, it's alive.
[Tim] I'm in a place in my life
that's a crossroads.
You have people that know,
"I wanna be a doctor or a lawyer."
"I wanna be this." Unfortunately,
I wasn't one of those people.
I've never done anything like this.
Are these okay to eat?
Uh, there's experts
that have eaten this and died.
I'll show you one thing. Check this out.
The Tlingit are the people of the tides.
When the tide is down, the table's set.
What they would do
is they'd kiss each one.

You'd kiss it and you gather them.
In 30 minutes to an hour,
if your lips go numb, you don't eat these.
If you got that in your body,
chances are 50%, you're gonna die.
I wouldn't go for these today.
We still got fat reserves.
We might be changing our minds tomorrow.

I'm about to start picking
these bad boys up and kissing each one.
[Javier] In talking to these guys,
I am surprised
at their lack of experience.
But during this game,
you don't necessarily need to finish
with the team that you started.
So, I'm actually keeping that in mind.
[Tim] Javier's making
good, clear decisions that,
you know, keep us all safe.
But right now, we don't have any food.
We can't cook 'cause we don't have fire.
I'm good at falling in line,
knowing my place and where I need to be,
but as those decisions
start to get questionable,
we're gonna have to have a chit-chat.

[narrator] So far, the Delta
proves to be a worthy adversary
to their Alaskan contender.
They've made fire.
They've found a nearby water source
they can boil
and ensure it's safe to drink.
The best part of waking up,
plain boiled water.
[chuckles]
[narrator] They continue
to set secure shelter,
and like other teams,
their thoughts also turn to finding food.
The team splits up to accomplish this.
While Jordan sets out to find deer
This is exactly
the kind of stuff I'm looking for.
That looks like a hoof.
[narrator] Paul steps
just feet away from base camp,
to check the snare he set.
Oh, we definitely had something.
Shit.
Had him for a little bit.

Oh, so much for breakfast.
Maybe lunch.
[narrator] Though Paul comes up
empty-handed in finding a trapped animal,
he makes another discovery that proves
a different animal is very much
- Oh, yeah.

Bear scat?
Did smell something in camp last night.
Strong smell. Could've been a bear.
There's more bear scat and odor there,
so it's definitely somewhere
they're coming through.

[Joel] I've tried to pinpoint where other
teams are, but I don't see a lot of smoke.
- That's all right. They can freeze.
- [laughs] That's right.
Their flares will go up first.
I guess it's good for us.
[Joel] I come from a hog farm
east of Indianapolis.
I grew up hunting, fishing, trapping.
If I had to identify my superpower
when it comes to survival,
it's being able to work on a team
and foster camaraderie,
even in the most difficult of situations.
- Whoo! I found two big ones!
- [Joel] Oh, excellent.
Oh my gosh. Yes!
- [Dawn] Did you find one?
- [Joel] Yeah, this one's hanging out.
I lost my mom in 2016 to suicide.
And ever since,
that appetite for putting
yourself to the test,
that's something I pursue,
in memory and in honor of her.

[narrator] Now, back at camp,
Delta is the first team to cook
and eat a modest first meal
of boiled mussels.
[Dawn] Let's eat 'em while hot.
[narrator] With food,
water, and fire all secure,
Delta Team seems to be off
to an early lead.
[Dawn] C'mon, Jordan! It's food time.
- We're eating.
- [Jordan] Okay.
Look, I got a berry in there.
- You haven't had a berry yet, have you?
- [Joel] No, but you earned that one.
[laughs]
You guys are so sweet.
I feel at home with the underdogs.
I grew up in a small town of 25 people.
Spent my childhood
on the back of a horse in the mountains.
Being able to hunt and forage,
I used to spend three, four months
in the wilderness by myself.
I'm most comfortable in the woods.
Around people, not so much.
But I'm hoping
that I can fit into the team
because I'm here to win.
A hundred and ten percent,
I'm gonna win this game.
I don't think any other team
is eating like we are right now.
[narrator] The skies signal
that there will be rain.
But what our players do not know
is that during this time of year,
it is not abnormal for rainstorms
to last up to a week at a time.

is the last thing on everyone's mind.
[Andrea] I've been throwing up all day.
I had just gotten through
helping build our shelter,
and all of a sudden
[vomits]
my body is rejecting
any kind of food or water.

[Andrea] It's not under control.
Oh my God, I can't breathe.

To me, that's just my body telling me
that something's not right.

and the vomiting Andrea is experiencing

this Alaskan environment
has proved to be
the biggest challenge of their lives.

can last 45 days in this shit.

[narrator] Little do they know,
their Alaskan environment
isn't even the most difficult part
of this game.
They haven't even faced one another yet.
