Zero Hour s01e10 Episode Script

Escapement

1 Previously on "Zero Hour" (Hank) I've seen things, dad a Nazi officer with my face.
The only thing more dangerous than Hank finding out who he really is is someone else finding out.
We're going after the cross.
The Pyrates will never get it.
(Melanie) You want to know about the kid who grew up in the orphanage.
Once we find the cross, I will tell you.
- Oh, my God.
Theo.
- I'm not going with you.
This is the place I belong now.
(Melanie) We believed that you were dead.
The Lord works in mysterious ways.
But it's not the Lord's work that you need.
It's mine.
(Laila) This is the location of the cross.
The bugs got to it.
Nobody move! It's over.
There's nothing there! (Theo) Bring up the bugs.
It's far from over.
(Ticking) (White Vincent) 9 is the number of judgment, the measure of our soul.
When all secrets come to light, the truth shall take its toll.
(Footsteps sound) Thank you for coming, commandant.
Please Have a seat.
May I ask why I've been brought here? My wife just put dinner on the table, and it's getting cold.
Some things are more important than a warm meal or a pretty wife.
Tell me do you love the Reich? I am a German.
That is answer enough.
You have shown supreme loyalty to your country.
In many ways, you are the perfect German.
So We'd like you to join our program, become part of Zero Hour.
What does that mean? It means you, like the Reich, will live forever.
A little Wagner always makes this easier for the patient.
Do you mind the sight of blood? I have seen plenty.
(Laughs) It's only a few minutes discomfort.
A small price to pay for eternity.
(Men singing opera in German) (Man) Could you imagine if they knew who you really are? (Singing continues) Now isn't this funny? They're after loyal Nazi blood and end up with two men of the church.
(Singing continues) These men will be punished for their experiments.
Yet we give them our own blood, even if our intentions are noble, we might have our own price to pay.
(Singing continues) What are they doing in there? The cross is gone.
(Theo) Put the samples on ice.
Get them to the truck.
(Grunts) And don't let them fall.
Hey.
What do we do with these three? Can't just leave 'em here.
I'll do it.
(Glove snaps) You pack the samples.
All right.
(Motor starts) Here's how this works You stay quiet, you climb inside the pit, and I'll keep this painless.
What did they do to you, Theo? Why are you working for them? One more word, and I will shoot them in the stomach and let them bleed out and force you to watch.
(Clicks) Now move! Now get down into the pit.
Go.
Theo, please! I said down! (Gasps) Oh! (Pants) On your knees.
(Cries) On your knees.
You don't really want to do this.
You remember who we were.
I can see it in your eyes! I remember.
(Birds caw) Don't follow me.
(Creaks) (Laila) The cross is gone.
The world didn't end.
(Door closes) It's over.
What about those bugs they got? You, uh, worried about them? (Sighs) You know what I care about? You're not in danger anymore.
Whatever importance you had was tied to the cross.
Now you're just plain old Hank Galliston.
I'm plain and old.
(Laughing) Thank you.
So I, uh, I woke up a friend in British intelligence.
We're gonna track Theo's ship and we're gonna launch a rescue operation.
You're seriously gonna go after him? The Brits are sending over a chopper to pick me up, so, yeah, that's exactly what I'm doing.
I don't think he wanted to be rescued.
You don't know what you're talking about.
He just saved our lives.
And told us not to follow him.
Well, I have to believe.
I would think you of all people would understand that.
Beck.
Beck, just be careful.
Yeah, you, too.
(Door creaks open) The crew said you killed three people back on the island.
Tell me how it felt.
It didn't feel like anything.
You know, I've killed a lot of people, but I've always felt something.
You let them live, didn't you? I need to focus on my work.
These samples are incredibly delicate right now.
But I would like to know, what's so special about these bugs? Why all of the precautions? Be careful with that.
What happens if I drop them? Whew.
Would I die of some horrible disease? I see what this is.
You think you still have power.
But you're just a hired gun, and you're about two days away from getting your pink slip.
You think that's all I am, a hired gun? If you interfere with my work She will not be happy.
Shut the door on your way out.
(Arron) So the cross was just gone? Yeah, all there was was some frozen bugs, and then Beck's husband, he took them.
(Rachel) Hank Something happened.
You know Melanie Lynch, C.
E.
O.
of The 41 Trust? I know who she is.
She came by the office while your dad as here, and She took him.
Took him? Like kidnapped him? (Arron) No, not exactly.
He seemed to know her.
That doesn't make sense.
I thought your mom might have some answers so I tried calling her a few times and I drove out to the house, but she's nowhere to be found.
Well, keep trying.
Okay, we're gonna be on the first flight back to New York.
I was wrong.
(Sighs) It's not over.
Not for me.
Somehow I'm still at the center of it.
As you can see, we're very well funded here.
Yes, it's a beautiful facility.
Just last week, we received a Burroughs 205 mainframe computer.
I doubt you have that at the university of Chicago.
If we did, they'd never let me touch it.
A shame.
They're wasting your talent over there.
I'm doing work that's years ahead of those guys.
But I didn't get my PhD in kissing ass.
(Laughs) This is this is what I like about Americans.
So straightforward.
(Sighs) Now let me be straightforward also.
I think you are the next big man In molecular biology.
And I want you to head this laboratory.
It's a wonderful offer, but I've decided Albania is just too far from home.
Doctor, I don't think you understand our offer.
You see, we know about the research you do in secret in your basement.
I have no idea what you And we want you to continue it here with our full support.
Most people would be afraid of what I do.
Small minds always fear change.
Galileo was labeled a heretic for saying the earth moved in the sky.
(Scoffs) Genius is never appreciated in its time.
And I believe you are a true genius for our time the only man who can finish this great project we started.
So, Dr.
Galliston, let me finish the tour.
Dr.
Galliston, good news.
What is that? You kept my work? My father always said you were the only man who could complete this project.
Now God has delivered you at the moment we needed you most.
The last piece of our experiment is headed to New York.
Are you ready to finish your work? (Inhales deeply) I've waited 50 years to find the courage.
I'm ready.
Then God's final hour is almost here.
Zero Hour 01x10 Escapement We didn't sign up for bugs.
You talking to me? We were hired to transport a relic, a piece of wood.
Plan's changed.
Yeah? Well, we don't like change.
And we don't like bugs.
Now you tell me, those things got a virus, is that why they're sealed? What do you want, friend? Do you want some more money? I can arrange that.
Well, money's no good, is it, when you're sick and bleeding out your ears? You listen to me, either those things go overboard or you do, friend.
It's a good thing I'm a woman of faith or this would make me nervous, Mr.
Vincent.
I'll give you any resources you need, but protect the insects.
(Footsteps approach) Look, I already told you, you can't be here.
(Cell phone beeps) I'm not leaving until I find him, okay? I'm sorry, Melanie.
They barged in.
- Security's on the way.
- It's okay, Stan.
Hank Galliston, right? "Modern Skeptic" magazine? What did you do to my father? (Laughs) The only thing I did to him was offer him a job.
If you don't believe me, ask him.
See? Safe and sound.
Dad, what are you doing here? Just just picking up a little consulting work.
What the hell are you doing here? I can't explain now, but we need to leave.
Calm down.
I'm not going anywhere.
Roland, listen, you don't understand who these people are.
Sure I do.
Dad, they're not helping children or curing malaria or whatever they're telling you.
Hank, stop.
I know exactly who they are.
And I know exactly what I'm doing.
I must apologize for my son.
He's always poking into things.
He certainly has a curious streak.
Dad Listen to you.
It's like you're 10 years old again and you're breaking into my study going through my books while I'm trying to work.
I have work to do.
Go home.
(Arron) This is insane.
Why why is everyone in your life hiding some secret from you? (Laila) Here you go.
It's disgustingly strong.
You should love it.
Mmm.
We, uh, should get going to your parents' house now.
Do you want us to come along? No, I need you guys to try and figure out what kind of bugs Theo took.
Maybe that will tell us why he took them.
Right there, that's everything we can remember Shape, sizes, color.
We'll figure it out.
You better get moving.
(Latch clicks) (Hinges squeak) Mom? Hello? Mom, you home? (Insects buzzing) (Buzzing continues) (Clicks switch) (Laila) Your mom never left a single crumb on the table.
The bedroom's a mess.
Wherever your mom went, she packed fast.
(Sighs) (Exhales) You okay? Not even close.
There's nothing here No secret documents, no 41 Trust, nothing.
It's just normal.
(Chuckles) Do you remember this night? That horrible quinoa meat loaf? We couldn't eat a bite.
What are you doing? Uh I was just remembering.
Well, don't.
I thought you said you forgave me.
I didn't forget, okay? We can't just pretend like nothing happened.
I'm not asking you to do that.
I wouldn't even Do you realize that I am doing exactly what I did two weeks ago? Only I was tearing apart our home trying to figure out who you were.
I'm trying to focus.
I'm trying to find one thing that can explain what the hell my father has been doing.
(Whispering) Hey.
I'm sorry.
What was your dad saying to you about you breaking in here and taking his books? Oh, he had a book.
I used to come in here and try and look at it.
It's still here.
"The Illustrated Manual of Infectious Diseases and Symptoms.
" (Object rattles) What is that? That's weird.
(Exhales) Your dad Your dad put this in your favorite book, Hank.
(Cell phone beeps) He meant for you to find this.
(Beep) There's only one number.
(Cell phone beeps, phone rings) (Line clicks) Hello.
(Clanks) (Door creaks) Clear.
That is not good.
Look, we need to get above deck and quarantine the ship.
Not yet.
Not until I find him.
Yeah, you do what you have to.
(Kicks door) (Door bangs) (Rattles) (exhales) Hey, don't get too close.
I checked the bodies.
Vincent and Theo must have escaped.
Lucky them.
Now what do we do? Wait around to just drop dead? We don't know what killed the crew.
So we wait for disease containment to get here and we stay calm.
I saw an open bio hazard container and a dead crew.
You do the math.
Look, you're after your husband.
You take risks for that.
I get it.
But I got six guys on this ship wondering if they'll die today, and they all have families, too.
I hope it was worth it.
(Brakes squeak) (Engine turns off) (Knocks) Come inside, quick.
Mom, what is this place? What the hell is going on? Oh, there's so much to talk about.
I-I thought some tea would be good.
(Tea kettle whistling) Mom, we don't want tea.
(Whistling stops) It looks like she's ready for the end of the world.
Two Earl Greys and a-a Chai for Laila? Did I get that right? Mom! We need to talk now.
Tell me what you're doing here.
Right.
Of course.
Oh, God help me.
(Voice breaking) I never wanted to have this conversation.
We thought we'd get away with it.
(Hank) Get away with what? (Rose) You see, your Your father, he worked for The Trust a long time ago.
And so did I.
(Equipment buzzing) The metaphase stage of mitosis appears normal.
So far, a perfect sample.
The chromosome walls They're breaking apart.
The test is negative.
Another failure.
(Door opens) (Clicks button) (Clatters) Sorry.
I thought I was alone.
You realize I've been here for five years with nothing to show for it? If you hate it here so much, why don't you leave, do something else? I'm the only one who can finish this.
I have a moral obligation to the future of science.
You think this is moral, what you do? Don't condescend.
A clever nurse is still just a nurse.
You know what? I've listened to you complain about your failures for years.
Maybe it's time for you to finally see one.
(Door opens and closes) I can't believe you've never been down here.
There was no real reason.
Look in there.
That's your reason.
He lives his whole life in this room.
He gets shots, three meals a day, and nothing else.
I didn't realize your work has a face and a soul whether you look at them or not.
(Rose) I wanted to leave a hundred times, but I thought I could help the children if I stayed.
Tell me what the experiments were for.
Your father was trying to create life in a laboratory.
Oh, God.
You didn't find me in some German orphanage, did you? (Voice breaks) Hank, I'm so, so sorry.
Mom, tell me straight.
Your father achieved the first gestational cloning of a human being.
Hank, he created you.
(Panting) Hank.
There's a few things you take for granted as human beings, right, simple things that we have a brain, lungs, red blood cells That we're gonna grow old someday That we're born of a father and mother, like everyone else.
You take that away, the fundamental thing, and wh Hey.
I can't possibly imagine what you are going through right now, but I want you to know that I'm here for you.
Look, the earth is still turning, the sun's gonna come up, and you are still the same man that you were before.
But I have no idea who the hell that man is.
(Rose) Hank.
I'm so sorry we kept this from you.
You have to understand, whatever else your father did, he did bring you into this world.
You weren't made in a test tube, Hank.
You were born of a woman, a surrogate mother.
And when you came into this world, you were just like any other baby.
What is it? What's so important at 2:00 in the morning? Uh, this baby you have to see.
Why? What's wrong with this one? That's just it.
Nothing's wrong.
(Coos) I tested everything I could (Coos) Blood, tissue urine, saliva.
You see why I brought him to you? It finally worked.
So why do I feel so hollow? Probably because so many people had to suffer for you to get here.
You don't understand.
(Fusses) He's gonna have it ten times worse.
What do you mean? He's not a person to them.
He's just subject 3-5-2, the experiment that worked.
They'll turn him inside out to find out why.
You can't let them do that.
(Baby fusses) Listen (Fussing) Listen You and I are the only people who know that this baby lived.
You can say he died in childbirth along with the mother.
And then what? I'll take him out of here tonight.
Can you help me? (Rose) I not only helped him, I went with him.
We changed our names, posed as a family.
(Chuckles) And for almost 50 years, we kept you hidden.
Why come forward now? They were getting too close to finding you, Hank.
They must never know you exist.
Your father is buying you time so that you can run, both of you, like we did.
Well, that's not gonna happen.
Dad risked his life for me.
We are going back there and we're gonna rescue him.
I think it's too late for that.
He sent me a message (Cell phone beeps) Right before you got here.
I hate bugs.
We're never gonna find the right one.
Well, we've already narrowed it down to some sort of beetle, so that's a start.
(Exhales) Yeah, well, there's 400,000 species of beetle.
So this should only take, I don't know, the rest of our life.
Yeah, maybe not.
Maybe they want the one with religious significance, you know? There are tons of mentions in the Bible of locusts, moths, scorpions, but there's only one single mention of the beetle, buried in Greek translation in the old testament.
Please enlighten me.
Habakkuk 2:11 "For the stone shall cry out of the wall and the beetle out of the timber shall speak.
" The beetle out of the timber? Uh-huh.
(Chair scrapes floor) Beetle out of the timber.
Uh, you just gave me an idea.
(Man shouts indistinctly) (People speaking indistinctly) (British accent) The crew didn't die of a virus.
The ship's completely clean.
Oh, thank God.
And so is this.
Any idea what did kill the crew? Their blood's testing positive for halon gas.
Halon? Sorry.
What what am I missing here? Halon gas it's used to suppress fires in ships.
It sucks the oxygen out of a room.
Normally you get the people out first.
Oh, so the crew suffocated to death? Yeah, the door was locked.
Vincent must have sealed them in first.
Somebody did.
You sure it was Vincent? (Helicopter blades whirring) They say God delivers everything in its time.
But it doesn't hurt to have good help.
Oh.
These are beautiful, aren't they? We have to start working on them as soon as possible.
Of course.
Stan, please pay Mr.
Vincent.
I think you'll find our severance package generous.
I don't want generosity.
I want what I'm owed.
You promised me answers.
You're still the sad little orphan boy, aren't you, looking for meaning in all the misery? You were a failed experiment, a mistake, a sacrifice on the altar of progress.
Progress towards what? I can only tell that to the faithful.
A man who believes in nothing is dangerous.
Don't you think it's better to have that man on your side? (Chuckles) (Turns engine off) (Car doors close) You don't have to hold me.
I'm a volunteer, not a prisoner.
Yeah? Is that what you think? (People speaking indistinctly) (Arron) I don't know Wow.
Okay.
I I don't know even know what to say.
Don't say anything.
You realize we we can't tell anybody about this.
W-we can't talk about it.
Okay.
(Inhales) Okay, so so they They cloned the blood of Korbin Sturm.
Why him? It wasn't about Korbin Sturm, not at first.
I mean, his was just one of hundreds of Nazi blood samples.
So maybe they were trying to repopulate the earth with the Aryan race.
No, clones are just replicated D.
N.
A.
They they they still take nine months for them to grow, like anyone else.
Why not just grab two Aryans and have them do it the old-fashioned way? There's something else they're doing.
There's a reason they need your father.
He got a message to my mom.
They're moving him.
Didn't know where.
We need to find out why they want him.
The bugs.
Excuse me? They want him because of the bugs.
Come here.
Let me show you something.
This is the closest thing we could find.
Is this the bug that Theo took? Sure looks like it.
All right, well, this nasty little fellow, this is Xestobium Rufovillosum, also known as The Death Watch Beetle.
(Rachel) They're known for making this ticking sound.
People used to think they were counting down the hours till your death.
And what's really interesting, the only thing this guy eats Wood.
So you think those beetles consumed the cross? That's my theory.
And see? They're not even native to the Faroes.
They can't survive in those temperatures.
They froze in place in 1938.
(Rachel) Which means they could have particles of the cross preserved inside of them.
This explains why the Shepherds hid the cross in 1938 when the Nazis were on the verge of human cloning.
It explains it how? All that talk about the cross leading to the end of the world? It never made sense before.
They didn't want the cross itself.
They wanted what was inside of it.
(Phone rings) You need to come see this.
Christ died on the cross.
But more importantly, he bled on the cross.
You think they're after the blood of Christ? You've read the Bible a few times, right? Book of Revelations Remember what happens right before the end of the world? Christ returns to earth.
(Theo) It's a miracle, but we did it.
We pulled enough D.
N.
A.
fragments to reform his complete genome.
What exactly am I looking at? The most Holy vision in the universe The end of all things A blueprint for the Son of God.
(Ticking) What do I have to say here? You can't go after your dad.
I am not gonna leave him behind.
But you are the last person who should be doing this.
If they catch you, if they learn who you are They won't.
They will take you and test you and hurt you.
You (Sighs) Hank, let someone else go.
You know, you once said to me that you would do anything if I asked.
Well, I'm asking now.
Run away with me.
Wherever we went, they'd follow.
I know ways to disappear.
You give me six hours, I will set the whole thing up.
We can just we could vanish to some beach paradise where no one will ever find us.
You know I can't leave until he's safe.
You know that.
Okay.
What about after? (Theo) The good news is, we extracted D.
N.
A.
From 2,000-year-old blood in the belly of wood beetles.
Technically, that shouldn't be possible.
So why don't you sound happy? It's a dead end.
We can't complete the next step.
Are you so sure? How many times have we tried to clone human D.
N.
A.
? A perfect clone just just isn't possible.
Not for you.
But the man who nearly cracked human cloning has reappeared after 50 years.
Well, that's quite a coincidence.
How exactly did he disappear? He got cold feet.
He was at the precipice of a great discovery and he ran away from it.
But now he's back? He said he was struck with a sudden desire to finish his great work.
You believe him? Not entirely.
Let me talk to him.
I've found people have a very hard time lying to me.
(Beck) This here is the key to me finding my husband and you finding your dad.
This is the container that Theo used to transport the bugs.
Should we be worried about that? That's the interesting thing.
There is no biohazard in here.
My theory this is a great way to transport something if you don't want people to look at it.
So it's just another cover story.
All right.
Let's print out a list of every 41 Trust property and clinic.
Let's see which ones are related to biohazardous materials Toxins, viruses, that kind of thing.
Hank, it's a massive organization.
There's hundreds of properties.
Then let's get started.
I had a funny feeling I'd find you in here.
I'm missing an important file on R.
N.
A.
replication.
I can't do any more work until I find it.
(Exhales) I know that you're lying.
Well, I'm not.
I swear.
Do it again, I'll take your eye.
You have been lying this whole time, Haven't you Roland? Tell me what you want.
I want you to remember me.
I'm sorry.
I I don't think we've met.
Are you sure? Look closer.
Yeah? (Voice breaking) Do you remember me now, doctor? 'Cause I remember you.
(Ticking) (Beck) Hank.
(Sighs) I can't find any properties that match.
I'm gonna head back to the Bureau and sort through tax records.
You're fast.
I got another hour here at least.
Listen, I-I don't really want to ask this, but do you have any idea where Laila is? (Footsteps sounding) You're ten minutes late.
You're lucky I showed up at all.
You might be my best customer.
You pay in cash, you never get caught, and you're easy on the eyes, so I got no problem doing a rush job for you.
But this guy This is a risk for me.
He's gonna be traveling with me the whole time, and we're gonna be far away from here.
It's like staring into the face of God.
(Sighs) We're so close.
And now you're telling me he's lying to us? Well, half a lie.
He doesn't have all the pieces he needs.
Not yet.
How can you be sure? I met this man once before (Door creaks) (Switch clicks) (White Vincent) A long time ago.
(Whispers) Wake up.
We're leaving.
(Baby fussing) What is that? - What are you doing? - It's a new baby.
It's kind of like a brother of yours.
Come on.
Bring the blanket.
Bring the blanket.
Come on.
What are you doing? We have to go.
I'm almost finished.
(Tube shatters) There is no more time.
(Shatters) I have to destroy my samples.
(Shatters) Why? They can't do anything without you.
It's not just my work.
It's about this blood.
There's something in it that makes it work.
Without this (Shatters) (Exhales) They won't be able to finish my work.
(Brakes squeal, gear shift clicks) (Car door opens) It's okay.
(Car door closes) We're free now.
We're not ever going back.
(Car door opens) (Car door closes) Brother.
(Chuckles) (Coos) (Engine idling) We can't just leave him here.
Look at him.
Look at his eyes.
We'll be crossing borders.
They may be looking for us.
He attracts too much attention.
I'll take that risk.
It's not just us.
Think of the baby.
If either of us get caught, his life is over.
Please.
It's the only way.
Come here.
(Sniffles) They'll be good to you here.
(Panting) Someday we will come back for you.
Okay? (Car door closes) (Car door closes) (Melanie) We had the answer.
For 50 years, we had the answer in that blood sample, and he destroyed it.
Not all of it.
That baby was a perfect copy, and he has the same blood in his veins.
And they raised that boy as their own.
Hank Galliston.
(Clicks gear shift) (Clicks seat belt release) (Blows air) (Clatters) This is Laila.
Leave a message.
Yeah, it's me.
Listen, give me a call when you get this, okay? (Car engine starts) I think I know how to find my dad.
(Tires squealing) (Glass shatters) (Squealing continues) (Glass tinkling)
