America's Got Talent s05e11 Episode Script

Las Vegas Week - Day 1

It's the biggest talent search in the world.
To find the greatest new act in America, we went to more cities And saw more talent Than ever before.
Tonight the competition reaches a whole new phase in the entertainment capital of the world--las Vegas.
Who will make it through to the live studio shows in Hollywood? Holy crap.
And whose dream will end right here? Kind of crumbled under the pressure.
It was really intense.
There's over 100 acts.
But only 48 will be finalists.
The judges are on a mission.
America needs to see something like this.
I do not agree on him.
Don't be ridiculous.
And only the best will survive.
Could be disqualified.
Could have had a really big accident.
Let the competition begin.
This was one of our toughest decisions.
It breaks my heart to have to do this.
Oh, God.
Welcome to America's got talent at the palms casino resort.
This is Vegas week.
Over 100 acts from across the nation have arrived.
Everyone's here to compete for one of the 48 spots in the live studio show, and ultimately $1 million and a headline show right here in the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas.
I just want that one chance in front of America.
While some acts settle in Others experience what Vegas has to offer.
To do a show here in Las Vegas, And I'm gonna bounce off the wall pretty soon.
This is what we love to do, so we got to fight for it.
Being here, just It feels like one step closer to something coming true.
I feel the energy of the city.
It's fantastic, and I love it.
I want this.
I want this really bad.
Before the judges arrive, all the acts have the opportunity to look at the city they could one day be headlining in.
We're in Vegas, baby! I love Las Vegas because it's a city of lights and dreams and passions.
Look at this gigantic volcano.
This is gonna be like my career in a year.
It's gonna explode and it's gonna be hot magma.
I saw my very first magician here in Las Vegas.
And now I'm here.
It's still completely surreal.
I'm just imagining us headlining, and our names and our pictures on the buildings.
All the acts desperately want to make it to Hollywood, but heading to Vegas are the three people that stand in their way- the judges.
We put through over 100 acts.
There are 48 spots.
Today is about sorting out the acts that we really want to see again.
It's a really, really hard day.
Prioritize.
Here we go.
Just the kind of dance that we're after.
You see, I don't think it's different.
How can you say that's different? All those steps you've seen before.
See, I think this guy had a great personality.
I couldn't disagree more.
I die for these two.
Talented.
Adorable.
My only question with him is, is he old enough to be a star? I thought she was amazing.
I think she should go straight through.
- No, I don't.
- No? Whoa! Aah! God.
Ugh.
I think it's entertaining.
I actually feel sick.
I think they're a one-trick pony.
No.
And the great thing about Vegas is they get found out if they are a one-trick pony.
That trick is worthy of Hollywood.
I love it.
What? I cannot believe you want them through.
You are terrible people.
- This guy here.
- I like him.
Loved him.
Yeah, but I want to see what he does without an audience.
Not stars.
Not stars! I don't get it.
They're not stars.
You don't get it? I think they're worthy of just putting right through to Hollywood.
No.
Get real.
This is a talent competition with a million-dollar prize.
Get real.
It's now 8:00 A.
M.
on day one, and all the acts have been summoned to the performance theater.
Everyone, you can just start walking over now.
Now in the past, acts have been eliminated right away, so the mood is definitely intense.
Welcome to Las Vegas.
Every one of you deserves to be here.
But we have looked at your original audition tapes, and we have to begin to be ruthless.
We have to choose the people that are worthy of going on to Hollywood and becoming our top 48.
We have separated you into three separate groups-- a, b, and c.
We chose these groups based on who we felt had a better chance to move on to Hollywood for our live shows and be part of that top 48.
So let me start with group a right here in the center.
Every one of you is going to perform today because we believe that group a has the best chance of moving on to Hollywood.
You are the judges' favorites.
Congratulations.
Group b.
I'm sorry, but I really don't have good news for you.
After reviewing all the tapes, we felt that your acts weren't as good as group a's.
Therefore, after we review all the acts in group a, if there are places left, you can perform then.
There may be two places left.
There may be ten places left.
It depends on how well or how badly group a performs.
Until then, I'm sorry.
All you can do is wait.
Group c, you were in many ways the most difficult category.
We looked at every audition incredibly closely.
And, as a result, we decided Welcome back to America's got talent at the palms casino resort.
Earlier, the judges divided the acts into three groups.
The judges' favorites will perform for a place in the top 48 today, and the standbys will perform tomorrow for any places leftover.
Now it's decision time for our final group.
Afraid your journey here ends today.
We decided, in your case, that you were so good, you're going straight to Hollywood.
Congratulations.
The ten acts going straight through to the live shows are From the Chicago auditions, the belly-dancing duo We're going to Hollywood! Polina, and strikers all stars.
Hey, we are super excited, man.
Oh, we--I can't even describe how we feel, man.
Right, right.
From the L.
A.
auditions, cheer sf, paspa I'm so happy.
That's it.
And future funk.
We're going to Hollywood! Whoo! From the Dallas auditions, arc attack, and the maniacs.
America, we will not let you down.
And, from new York, fighting gravity.
We're going to Hollywood! Yeah! And the south Philly vikings.
- Can't even describe it.
- Can't.
Lot of hard work ahead.
So ten talented acts get a free pass to Hollywood.
But for the remaining acts, this is where the competition really begins.
For the standbys, it's a day of watching and waiting.
But for the judges' favorites, it's a chance to compete for the 38 remaining spots in the live studio shows.
Time to take the gloves off, come out swinging.
May the best one advance.
Every act has been put into a category, so that judges can compare like with like.
These acts will rehearse together, be called to the stage together, and from the wings watch each other perform.
Well, it's just very intimidating, you know, to look at a board and see all those names and people you're gonna be up against.
Yeah, it's very scary.
So the judges are ready, and now it's time for the performances to begin.
First up are the magicians, and already they're sizing up the competition.
I think I can definitely beat the other magicians in a heartbeat.
But with a lot of work.
And I think my biggest competition here is Michael grasso.
I'm nervous.
I've seen my competition in the magic category.
I know they're doing big illusions, but what I'm doing is I'm bringing magic back to its purest form- sleight of hand.
These guys are serious here, man.
The guy with those hands, are you kidding me or what? I couldn't do that.
It's not funny, though.
I've met all my competition.
They're absolutely amazing.
And just to be included, you know, in that pool of people, is a tremendous honor.
And, you know, I'm definitely gonna have to step it up to try and maintain in the competition.
The judges first met army pilot William Scott Anderson in Portland.
You were, like, this warrior, you know? I think he has skill.
I think-- I think it's very good.
But, um, I think, um, I think I have a bit of an edge, personally.
- How'd it go? - Pretty good.
Feel good about it? I feel really good about it.
He deserves a shot.
No.
Maybe.
Let's see how many spots we have left.
Backstage and getting ready to perform is 36-year-old Michael grasso.
I don't think there's anyone in this competition that wants it as bad as me.
In new York, his big illusion shocked everybody.
- That was amazing.
- Wow.
Well, in new York, I did a big grand illusion.
This time in Las Vegas I'm gonna give the judges an opportunity to see the sleight of hand skill.
That's really what makes up a great magician.
- How are you? - I'm good.
Do you believe this is the biggest moment of your career, potentially? Oh, this is definitely the biggest moment of my career.
Without a doubt.
- Nervous? - A little bit.
Okay, well, look, best of luck.
You have to remember when you do an act like that with cards and that, can the person in the 40th row in a Las Vegas theater see it? Thank you very much.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
What he did in the audition was "wow.
" This was good.
Not "wow.
" Yes, it's not big scale, but it was very slick.
Instead of going with the big illusions, I went with something that takes a lifetime of practice to achieve what I just did.
And, uh, if this was the last show of my life, you know, I think the card manipulations would probably be what I would choose to do.
Now Michael can only hope that his gamble to go small instead of big pays off.
Tell me what's going on in your mind right now.
We're rehearsed it.
I'm a perfectionist, you know, but I'm nervous.
I'm not gonna lie.
I've been performing all my life, and every performance is nerve-racking.
But there's nothing more nerve-racking than today.
That was good.
Thank you for having me.
Thanks again.
Thank you, Murray.
Okay.
Thank you.
It's cool.
See a lot of- lot of guys doing it.
But I like it.
You know, I'm sure the audience loved it.
I mean, he's a good showman, and it's all quite glam.
And I like the whole scale of the thing.
Okay, out of all the magicians we have, where do you think he ranks? I brought the best that I could do today here.
This is as good as it gets.
And, honestly, I'd be absolutely devastated if I didn't go through.
After Murray, there's only one magician left-- chips cooney.
How long you waited for this moment? Oh, jeez, about One, two 'Bout four seconds.
Four seconds? You seem excited.
Are you excited to be here? Got a phone call coup-- couple hours ago from the magicians union telling me I wasn't revealing my tricks.
Really? They said I was the only one who wasn't revealing my tricks.
They said I could put a bag on my head.
I don't want to put a bag on my head.
That's ridiculous.
Just stupid.
Well, try to calm yourself down, and then get to it.
Thank you.
- Okay.
First I'm gonna do the trick, and then tell you how it's done.
So how I did that, I had it in my hand.
You didn't know it because I was talking to you.
I took it out of this bag.
How I did that, I just put it behind there, threw the damn thing back there.
This is the last one.
Paper trick took me 4 1/2 years to learn to do this right.
I had to practice in front of a video camera.
First you rip it.
Then you put it in an envelope.
Put some DNA on it.
Look at it, show everybody.
You take it, you throw it.
Here's the trick.
That one, I already had in the envelope.
It was already ripped.
Chips, thank you.
All right.
That was the most pointless thing I've ever seen in my life.
Sounds like you did your job here today.
Oh, thank you.
All right.
Take care.
God bless you.
God bless you too.
Utterly, utterly pointless.
- I think it's fabulous.
- It's funny.
What is remotely clever about that? - He's funny.
- He's a comedian.
It's not funny.
I hope I've done enough.
If the judges have a sense of humor, I'll be the act that goes through.
No question about it.
It's an idiot.
He's a comic.
You don't get it.
No.
Welcome back to America's got talent and Vegas week.
Next to face the judges are the harmonica players.
I want to win the million, and I am the best.
- The judges first met at the Portland auditions.
And in the same category as Pierre is 56-year-old jia-yi he, who auditioned in new York.
Three is not enough.
Not enough! I play four.
Play! That's enough! Count it, four harmonicas.
I play five.
He may have, you know, a lot of harmonicas, but I have the gold one.
I am sure I'm better than him.
I'm ready to be selected for Hollywood.
Today will be world premiere.
You don't need five harmonica to play good music.
No.
You think you were better than Pierre? - Sure.
- Yeah? He is not better than I.
So you're better than I, huh? Yeah.
Which would you rather watch? Pierre or - I like them both.
I don't know.
If you had to choose one.
Do you think that this show needs a harmonica player? Maybe not.
Next are the acrobats, and their time to be called to the stage is just moments away.
It's a diverse and highly competitive group.
The category I'm in, it's tough, but, uh, I got confident, I got heart, and I got gut, and I'm not afraid.
I think we're all feeling the pressure in this group, just watching each other warming up, and not knowing what to expect, really, so it's really having to bring it to the table.
You know, there's a lot of competition, of course, but, uh, but, you know, I think we have what it takes.
Not really sure what to expect from them.
What can rock climbers really do on a stage? I don't know.
Are you happy with that? - I am.
- Yeah.
- Thank you very much.
- Thank you.
We've seen them twice now.
Mm-hmm.
- Right.
I mean, how long could you watch that for? If they had the money, can you imagine what they could build? The routine, I don't find it complicated.
It's very easy.
But they were nice and together.
That may be the act to beat.
We'll see.
I think I'm in another level.
Did you get stuck there at the end? Technical hitch.
Which happens in live shows, so Okay, well, thank you very much.
When it works, it looks beautiful and graceful, but when it works.
- It did not work today.
- No.
What could have just happened on stage, we could have had a really big accident.
While Michael and Ashley have to come to terms with the fact that their performance didn't go to plan, is hoping he can repeat the success of his first audition.
In new York, he amazed the judges with his waterfall of death.
Tonight, I'm gonna have to step it up a notch.
So for the performance, I have something different to give.
Her arms are gonna snap.
All right, thank you.
- Thank you.
I like you.
- How'd it go? - I loved it.
You loved it? I was amazed that she was able to hold the weight of both of them on her two arms.
I think it was good enough, but then you'll--we'll see.
Welcome back to America's got talent and Vegas week.
Next up is the danger category, and the competition is heating up.
We're bringing fire that nobody's ever seen before.
We're doing things that nobody's ever done before.
The other acts in my group are very, very different.
Nobody else here can do what I'm doing.
Bring it on.
I say the stronger they are, the harder they fall.
I might be blonde.
I might be old.
But I'm gonna beat 'em.
I'm ready to compete and do our thing, and blow the judges away.
Oh.
Holy crap.
I just want to do my very best.
I'm gonna fight for it.
I mean, I've probably done that toss I'm very, very disappointed.
Every aspect in my act today is gonna have a high level of danger.
I'm gonna have to take you guys outside.
My stuff's a little bit extreme.
If I do it in here and either I or the equipment fails, somebody could get badly hurt.
Okay, so you got us outside.
We're gonna start out today with how strong men pick up girls.
Wow.
Must have been over 900 pounds.
We got bigger stuff.
All right, let's go.
Whatever the strongman can do, the Paul bunyan lumberjack show can do better.
Go! There are some very good acts, and I honestly hope we all go, but something tells me that's probably not gonna happen.
Back inside the theater, it's time for 39-year-old Antonio restivo, to prove he's more worthy of a place in Hollywood than his fellow competitors.
We're competing with some of the best acts in the world, but we're bringing the best game, and we are gonna win this.
The judges first saw Antonio in our new York auditions.
You are going to Las Vegas.
I've worked my entire life doing what I do, and I feel like I'm bringing something that nobody else is doing.
Welcome back.
Thank you.
Thank you for having me.
Um, I knew I had to bring an even better act, a bigger game.
So, uh, I went back home and brainstormed, and came up with something that I hope you guys are gonna love.
All right.
Show us what you got.
How are you feeling now, Antonio? I feel great.
Didn't go perfect, but I was gonna say, I mean, you missed with the fire there, right? Yeah, yeah.
I mean, the only problem, Antonio, is that this year the talent level is through the roof.
I can tell you that.
And some have been completely flawless.
And others have dropped the ball a bit.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
I'm not gonna sleep tonight.
I'll be up all night thinking about it.
Welcome back to America's got talent and Vegas week.
As the competition continues, there's an additional challenge for the next category up.
All day long, the dry, Vegas air has been bothering the classical singers.
You have to keep the voice warmed up once it's started, and you have to keep it wet.
The stage here is very difficult, because it's very dry.
But for prince poppycock, it's causing more than just a dry throat.
For the last couple of days, I started losing my voice.
I'm about 75% now.
- 32-year-old store clerk John quail first met the judges in new York.
You are magnificent.
Despite impressing the judges in new York, John is now struggling in Vegas.
I have some kind of virus or something.
So I just want to do the best that I can while I'm here.
May not be able to hit it out of the park.
You know, I have to hit a c-sharp, which is hard for me anyways.
I heard a little rumor that you weren't feeling well.
It's true.
It's true.
But the show must go on, and I'm here to entertain.
- Okay.
- Entertain us.
Your bug Affected your voice, though, quite a lot, didn't it? Mm-hmm.
You okay? Mm-hmm.
Um You know, it's just It's been very emotional, and I've been trying very hard to keep going, and I wanted my voice to be 100% for this and for you.
Um, and it's not.
And, uh, but I-- I tried my best.
This moment could change your destiny, and I-- and I apologize for the fact that you weren't at your best.
Thank you.
And, uh, we'll see.
Thank you very much.
Thank you very much.
How did it go? It went--it Why are you so emotional? It was really intense.
It was just a very intense moment.
You know, you could tell he had a bit of a cold, but he's not bad.
He's fabulous.
The way he presents himself.
This character he has created for himself.
Taking measures to ensure his voice is in top form is As soon as the judges say you can start, you can go anywhere you want.
Just do your thing.
All right.
Come on over.
The judges first met Hannibal at the Los Angeles auditions.
Hallelujah But not all the judges were impressed.
It was more like Hannibal Lecter, to be honest.
I don't think you should be playing the keyboard.
You were missing endless notes.
But Hannibal is more than determined to keep moving forward in the competition.
I thought I had on an interesting outfit.
I made it all myself.
You made all of this yourself? Everything.
The hat and the vest.
Wow.
Is that a cock on your head? It is.
It's a rooster.
Oh, okay.
It's a symbol of a new dawn and a new day and a new life.
If you ask the rooster, he will tell you he's the one that brings the sun.
Oh.
What is your message, Hannibal? My message is that, uh, being on America's got talent is a wonderful experience for me, because I'm embracing my greatest fear.
Which is? My greatness.
You're afraid of your own greatness? That's why I'm here, to move past the fear.
Okay.
Fear no more.
Sing the song.
All right, thank you.
Thank you so much.
Thank you.
He's--he's a novelty.
Yes, but he has got a genuine - He's got talent.
- He does.
Right now I feel great.
I feel very happy.
I feel blessed.
And I want it as much as I want my next breath.
Carlos.
- Hey.
- Hey.
- How are you? - How you been? - I'm fine.
- You fine? - A little nervous.
- A little nervous? Yes, of course.
- The judges first met Carlos aponte in Chicago.
It was stunning.
Oh, here in Las Vegas is amazing.
Tired.
Uh, cool.
That is--that is the real word.
Cool.
Carlos, come on over.
This is an amazing experience, and I hope really to be in the 48.
Really.
And I know if I only be true To this glorious quest That my heart Will lie peaceful and calm When I'm laid to my rest And reach The unreachable stars Thank you.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
Blessing and regards.
- How'd it go? - Fine.
Very nervous.
Of course, I don't know if Ah.
Ah.
It's so very amazing sensation.
He gave a great performance.
- He did.
- He was commanding.
That's one of the best vocals we've heard.
This time it wasn't as impressive to me.
Welcome back to America's got talent at the palms casino resort.
This is Vegas week.
It's halfway through the day, but the performances are far from over.
Today is a chance for group a, the judges' favorites, to prove they've stepped up their game and deserve a place in the top 48.
Group b, the standby acts, will get a chance to perform tomorrow for any remaining places.
Everyone wants a shot at the prize of a lifetime-- $1 million, and a headline show right here in Vegas.
And the judges decided to put similar acts together so they could see how they compare to their direct competition.
And next up is the dance category, starting with the tappers.
The hot shots are a family group who've been dancing together their whole lives before the judges saw them at the Portland auditions.
See you in Vegas.
We're gonna fight for it.
I mean, that's what we are.
We're fighters.
We know, like, the pressure is on.
Okay.
Let's see it.
How--how do you think you did? I screwed up.
So how are you feeling about that? Uh, little disappointed and a little embarrassed.
All right.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
He kind of crumbled under the pressure.
I love what they do.
So do I.
I love the energy.
That was not a great performance.
It wasn't.
I just tripped and missed a step, and No excuses.
I screwed up.
Now all the hotshot tap dancers can do is wait as the judges review the many other styles of dance in their category.
There were parts of that which were electrifying.
The thing is, we've got completely different dance groups.
This is gonna be a toughie.
Backstage, the last two dance groups are warming up for their chance to impress the judges.
It's a head-on clash between street performers reckless from fort lauderdale, Florida, and style pros crew from Los Angeles.
They're stiff competition, so it's just like, "okay, we got to make sure we're on top of our game.
" Style pros crew, they're bringing it, but we're different.
We bring theatrics.
We bring more than just a dance routine.
Well, I've been seeing reckless rehearse, you know.
They're a real good crew.
They're real tight.
I just think that we have something that's unique.
That is what's gonna put us over.
The judges first met style pros crew at the L.
A.
auditions.
See you in Vegas.
We came together from the street.
This is our lives.
If we don't make this, that's what we have to look forward to.
We just trying to go to this next level.
The next level is the stage, and Just means a lot.
all right.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Deliberately gone back to a street performance.
Okay.
The tricks were spectacular.
Yeah, they were.
Well, I thought some of them were.
I think they're great athletes.
- How'd it go? - Yo, I feel good.
Feel good? It went good? - Yes.
- Yeah.
A group that's no stranger to hard work is reckless.
And in Orlando, they proved their talent on the big stage.
You're going to Las Vegas! Thank you so much.
Thank you! Every time we get on stage, we put our hearts out there, and, as a group, it's more than just dancing to us.
This is our life.
And we love this dearly.
We haven't had much as dancers.
We all had to grind it out by ourselves, but we all make it happen because we know how to turn nothing into something.
Why should we give you a place? This means everything to us.
Everything.
Everything.
It will change our lives drastically, and we promise we will not fail you guys.
Well, this is gonna be the biggest couple of minutes of your lives, so good luck.
Thank you.
How do you think you did? We did great.
Yeah, I feel like we did great.
We put our hearts out there.
All right.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
As much as I believe that they're really, really good, do you think what you just saw was better? Did they step it up? They--they are definitely one of the better dance groups we have.
For me, it was one step down from what we originally saw.
Like, I was almost sweating, but Yeah, but not really.
Not really.
They needed something extra to just kind of take it over the top.
Our performance, we did everything to the best of our ability, so that's what we have to depend on now.
I mean, we could be going home.
Coming up on America's got talent Aah! You are aware you can get disqualified for that.
Welcome back to America's got talent and Vegas week, where the category currently performing on stage is the female vocalists.
Devil in a blue dress Blue dress, blue dress Devil in a blue dress now You know the big wheel keep on turning Proud Mary keep on burning Rolling, rolling Rolling on the river I mean, to get to the final, this year, you've got to be an amazing singer, and I'm not sure she's an amazing singer.
Are you ready to go out there and give it to 'em? Oh, I'm about to tear it up.
I can't wait.
first performed in the Orlando auditions.
Listen Looked like you were just sort of exploding.
You know, like this was your moment.
This could change my life drastically.
It's not easy being a single mother and taking care of two boys and singing and doing hair.
I'm doing this for my boys.
They need me.
So don't make me close one more door I don't want to hurt anymore I have nothing Nothing Nothing If I don't have you Waiting to go on next is 21-year-old Debra romer.
I'm a little bit nervous about my competition.
I really try to not really think about it.
You know, 'cause it's not anything I can change.
The judges first met Debra in Chicago, where her nerves almost got the best of her.
Spend all your time waiting For that second chance For a break that can make it okay It wasn't really strong.
I sensed your fear of performance.
He senses fear.
I sense a certain kind of innocence and vulnerability, which I find really appealing.
This is what I want more than anything.
I'm kind of doing this, like, totally on my own.
I ran away from home when I was 17 years old, and I haven't had any contact with any of my family, and so if I fail, I don't have anyone to fall back on.
You gonna nail it? Yeah.
I'm gonna try.
- You ready? - Yep.
- Go for it.
- Thank you.
No more nerves? No more nerves.
Show us what you've got.
You took your coat off And stood in the rain You're always crazy like that And these foolish games Are tearing me Tearing me You're tearing me apart And your Thoughtless words Are breaking my heart You're breaking my heart Thank you for that.
Thank you, Debra.
She brings her sadness to her performance.
I like that.
She sings from her heart.
She's had a tough life, you know? You can feel it.
Music definitely gave me a purpose.
It's the only thing I want to do for the rest of my life.
Nothing else.
It's really what I like to do, but It's all up to them now.
She still had a little bit of that trepidation at the beginning.
You know, she's nervous.
She's not-- she doesn't grasp it.
But she is good.
The final act to perform in the female category is 74-year-old Mary Ellen.
How you doing? - I'm getting there, I think.
- You getting there? The judges first met Mary Ellen in new York, where they were divided on her level of talent.
She is rocking.
There may have been one or two missed notes there.
Yes, okay, I believe that.
I'm gonna say yes.
I've got to see more of this.
Oh, honey, thank you.
Are you excited about being in Las Vegas? Oh, my.
Heard you came out here on a bus.
Wow.
You ready? - Mary Ellen.
- All right, Mary Ellen.
- Hello, Mary Ellen.
- Hello, holly.
- What did you call me? - Holly.
Did I call you holly? - Yes.
- You like that? What--what is--? What is, uh Do you know my na--? Well, anyway, let's get to business, 'cause this is serious, and this could change your life.
Yes, holly.
- Holly.
- Holly! Okay, can we get on with this please? Yes.
Whoo! She is never, ever going to stop.
She'li or - it's musical Torture.
Aah! We have to go.
We have to we have to go.
You realize that you only had 90 seconds.
Yes, and I got carried away, and they kept clapping, so I just I love you too.
Fabulous.
Thank you.
Love yas.
There is nothing like that in existence.
That's got to go all the way.
So how you feel you did? I think I did fine.
I can do better.
- You can do better? - Yes.
I can't keep my eyes off of her.
She didn't sing or play a note in tune.
I'm rooting for you.
I love you too.
All right, now.
I know you're married.
Welcome back to America's got talent at the palms casino resort.
It's Vegas week.
Today the judges' favorites are competing for the in the live studio shows in Hollywood.
The competitive environment is tough, but there's one category that's all about having fun.
At least backstage.
It's the kids.
- Uh! - Oh! And since arriving, these young hopefuls have become firm friends.
You're so cute.
Oh, my God.
I like this kid.
- I love him.
I love this kid.
But once it gets to the stage, the competition begins.
He might think he's got anything on me, but he don't.
All right.
I think it's gonna be tough to get put through to the live Hollywood show, because all the other singers and dancers, they're really good.
Cj dippa thinks he's the best kid here, but at the end, it's not him who's judging, but the judges.
People say that I'm younger and I might not want it as much as the older guys, but no way.
I want to make it just as much as they do.
Okay.
Let's see it.
Ooh.
Is it still something that America's gonna want - Yes.
- To watch and vote for? Being here is a little nerve-racking, but I'm gonna do my best, and I'm confident.
Stand by me Oh, stand by me Oh, stand Stand by me Stand by me He's getting-- he's moving up.
Definitely getting better.
But the thing is, at 12, his voice is about breaking.
One of the older members of this category is 17-year-old Connor doran.
I feel like I belong here.
I feel a lot stronger now.
Emotionally, inside, I feel a lot happier.
Connor was diagnosed with epilepsy at age four, but at his Portland audition, he showed extraordinary control and grace.
It was one of the most beautiful, unique things I've seen live.
It's wonderful.
A couple years ago, there was a point in my life when I felt like I couldn't do anything.
I just felt worthless.
What's going through your mind right now? Oh, I just hope I do good.
Now I know that I have something to be proud of.
Probably more than any of my friends do.
What advice did you have for him? Have fun.
And breathe.
I'm immune to everything.
It's me and the kite.
Whoa.
What is he doing? So nervous.
Look at Sharon.
Sharon loves him.
Look at her face.
She loves him.
She's about to cry.
All right.
Thank you very much.
It's good to see you again.
To go for it would be tremendous.
It would mean the world to me.
Well, he's an extraordinary performer.
Can he handle going live? I do not know.
That's what would worry me.
While Connor's mom congratulates him on a job well done, prepares to go on.
In Dallas, the crowd went wild when cj performed his very own rap.
Said I'm chillin' in my room With my black light poster Disco ball up it flows like a coaster Move over eminem.
Cj dippa is in town.
The only difference between me and eminem is eminem don't dance.
Yo, cj.
What's poppin'? You tell me what's popping.
America's got talent.
All right.
Cj dippa, this is your moment.
Good luck.
Got this fresh rap On this beat I'm 'bout to lay this Chillin' in Vegas A.
G.
T.
Gon' make me famous Throw your hands in the air Represent my name Let me hear you scream Represent my fame How old are you again? One, one.
One, one.
All right, cj, thank you very much.
He can rap.
He wrote that.
He told me he wrote that.
All right, how'd it go? Awesome.
This is a tough decision.
Not only based on his talent, but there's so much great talent, and we've only got so few spots.
- I know.
- Welcome to the reality of judging the show.
Like, all you can do is hope.
Exactly.
I'm not getting no hopes up.
You're going.
You're going.
Welcome back to America's got talent, where the comedians are performing on stage.
You know, I've tried all the fad diets.
I even tried spirulina.
It's plankton.
Do you know who eat plankton? Whales.
It just comes down to whether or not the judges feel more fondly about their grandmother or some creepy guy with a beard.
- The judges first met doogie at the new York auditions, where he proved his abilities to handle a tough crowd.
I'm gonna come find you people.
I'm gonna hunt you down like bugs, and I'm gonna squish you in your houses.
This is the worst crowd I've ever performed for! In the worst possible scenario, he turned it around.
As a bearded American, I face a lot of discrimination.
I'm frequently mistaken for a hasidic Jew, a Muslim, or occasionally an amish businessman.
I find that insulting.
Not because I have a problem with any of those religions, but because the unspoken assumption is the only reason to have a beard like that is because God is forcing you to.
How do you think that went? It felt pretty good.
I think it went pretty good.
I got to, like, uh, tell my jokes.
That could be the problem, because I thought you were better when 3,000 people were baying for your blood.
When you have an audience that's great, like, you definitely do feed off their energy.
I agree with you.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
How'd it go, doogie? It went good, Nick Cannon.
I feel good about it.
All right.
If you feel good, that's all that matters, man.
Doogie's fate now rests in the judges' hands.
And next to take the stage are the novelty acts.
This is what America's got talent's all about.
We're a category for people who don't fit elsewhere.
I did not expect my category to be the way that it is.
My act is very different from theirs.
But, I mean, everybody's act is different and unique, so I'm a lot sexier than the other people in my category.
The three judges got their hands full.
Wow, that is something.
It is incredibly clever.
And she is stunning.
What I don't like is coming to mind.
Uh, the bosom.
I'm gonna use a mousetrap and a blow gun to eat a marshmallow.
Would have been great if you'd actually caught the marshmallows.
Thank you so much.
- Thanks.
- Thank you.
What's going through your mind? - It's about time.
- About time? It's about time.
Yes.
Of course.
And why do you say it's about time? Because I've been doing for 47 years, you know? And it was all about time when Arthur auditioned in Los Angeles.
Did Arthur tells you that it takes three hours to set this up? Is that--is that true? He was building it back here the whole time.
Arthur, I want to spend time with you in Vegas, so it's a yes.
This is a real, uh, true art form for you? I think so.
Yes.
Yeah.
For the last weekend alone, for instance, you know, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, I performed 17 hours.
You performed 17 hours last weekend? Over three days.
Yeah.
Ain't you tired? I couldn't pay the rent.
That's why Understood.
Understood.
Oh baby let me be Loving Teddy bear Thank you very much.
It's that way, Arthur.
Okay.
So here's my thought.
Here's my thought.
Next time, turn these back on.
The last act to take the stage is 75-year-old hand whistler Sally cohn.
I'm not sure quite how I stack up to him.
He's handling more than one instrument.
I'm only handling one instrument.
Okay.
All right.
Here it goes, Sally.
Purse? Yeah.
The judges first met Sally in new York.
Sally, I have the title of your next book for you.
And that is? Hand whistling in Las Vegas.
Oh, my God.
I want very, very much to go to Hollywood.
I wouldn't want to be there 24/7, 365, but I do want to go to Hollywood.
Hi, everybody.
- Hi, Sally.
- Hi, Sally.
How you doing? I'm doing just fine.
Thanks.
Now, here's the thing.
There's only, as you understand, Tell me what you have to offer that you think will get you into one of those spots.
Well, I have 62 years-- whistling experience, and that ought to be worth something.
Well, I can't wait to see it.
Where is the music? Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you, Sally.
I think, to the right.
I think you want to go to the right.
- To the right! - To the right.
How'd it go, Sally? Well, it went pretty well, except I forgot the way back.
You forgot the way back? Yeah.
Absolutely brilliantly unique.
Just wonderfully crazy.
I mean, look, she's a sweet lady, and she's actually a good hand whistler.
I just can't honestly imagine her in the top 48.
All right.
You take care.
You too.
Thanks.
Bye-bye.
Bye.
Welcome back to America's got talent at the palms casino resort.
This is Vegas week.
And getting ready to hit the stage are the male singers.
This year, the standard is higher than ever before, with more singer-songwriters making it through to this Vegas round than we've ever seen.
They've got to be better than the audition.
That has to be the bar.
Because there's so much competition that actually we can afford to be that ruthless.
Well, now that I've seen my competition in the male category, I am-- I am very nervous.
There's a lot of talent, and I do hope that I stand out.
With group b watching and wishing for their chance, the first of the male singers take the stage.
I said Georgia Ooh Georgia She laid her heart and soul out in her hands This show's called America's got talent.
He is the epitome of America.
But for some acts, the pressure of the competition is more than they can handle.
I So high So high, yeah Do you think you've blown it? Yeah.
And backstage, watches and waits.
My heart's been, like, pounding ever since I've been here.
The waiting, anticipating, the nerves.
Just, it's really just crazy.
I don't know how to explain it.
Taylor wowed the judges with his performance in Dallas.
Somewhere over the rainbow I loved the whole damn thing.
It was great.
And both he and his dad were a nervous wreck.
I'm shaking like a dog.
Last audition, I was really nervous.
My dad's here with me today, and we've been practicing in the room constantly.
Ever since I've been in seventh grade, I couldn't think of anything else to do besides music.
Uh, it's just been pretty much my life.
I've never been to Hollywood.
Never been to Vegas.
This has just been absolutely incredible.
Some people say I'm the life of the party 'Cause I tell a joke or two And although I might be laughing And hearty Oh deep inside I am blue So take a good look at my face You'll see that my smile Is out of place And as you get closer and closer You can trace the tracks of my tears Could you trace these tears Well, the interesting thing tonight, I think, with seeing all you male singers-- and there's quite a few sitting over there, waiting for some chinks in the armor.
Quite a few have come back and not been quite as good as they were in the audition, which may open some doors.
Anyway, thanks, Taylor.
Sure.
When I was out there on the stage, listening to the monitors, it was just really trebly, and I just couldn't feel myself in there.
I'm really, really disappointed.
I thought he was stretching a bit on the vocal.
He's in the toughest category.
Yeah.
- The last to go on is from Mississippi.
I feel very nervous right now.
And I think the reality's really sinking in right when you're backstage, about to go on.
Michael's performance moved the judges at his Los Angeles audition.
What does America's got talent mean to you? Winning something like this? It means a lot for my grandparents.
They raised me, and they lost everything in hurricane Katrina, and it would just be nice for me to do something for them, you know? That's wonderful.
Oh anyone can tell You think you know me well But you don't know me You really do have talent.
You really do have talent.
I do want this so bad.
I'm very mellow.
You know, I'm not gonna jump around and scream about it, but, yeah, inside, I definitely want it.
I really, really hope that they do put me through to Hollywood.
I just want that one chance in front of America.
All you got to do is try Just try a little tenderness Oh yeah All you got to do Is think about it You got to love her Please her, never leave her Just squeeze her a little now Yeah And try a little tenderness Oh Yeah you got to love her Please her, don't leave her Just squeeze her And try a little tenderness Went over.
Thank you very much.
Thank you.
You--you were way over 90 seconds there.
Was I? Oh, I'm so sorry about that.
When I get on the end there, I couldn't remember where the end was.
I mean, you are aware you can get disqualified for that? 'Kay.
All right.
Thanks, Michael.
- Thank you very much.
- Thank you.
So what do you think the judges are saying right now as they're deliberating? Well, I went over 90 seconds, so, you know, I could be disqualified.
I mean, he went on too long, and actually to his detriment, because he was reaching for emotion.
I think you're wrong.
I really think you're wrong.
Tough category, though.
I'm not sure if he's gonna make it.
I gave it all I could.
You know, considering I was very nervous, you know? I'm not gonna use that as an excuse.
I--I kept going, and it's gonna be a long and painful wait for this.
Yeah, to find out what's going on.
Coming up on America's got talent Please step forward.
This was one of our toughest decisions.
It breaks my heart to have to do this.
Oh, God.
Welcome back to America's got talent and Vegas week.
The day-one performances are over, and now it's time for the judges to decide who's going to our live studio show.
There are 48 spots.
It's gonna be tough.
While the judges make some tough decisions, downstairs, all the contestants can do is wait to hear their fate.
Danger acts.
For sheer, unpredictable danger, that's the one, isn't it? I want this so badly.
I really do.
I'm not ready to go home at all.
Magic, I've been pleasantly surprised this season.
I think this guy is a potential finalist.
He wowed me in the audition and bored me here in Las Vegas.
It's that one.
For me to make it trough to the Hollywood live show would be a dream come true.
That's the one for me.
Are you being serious? It's ridiculous.
It's hysterical.
But he is utterly ludicrous.
I gave my 100%, but my voice was not.
Best year yet in the dance category.
- Yes.
- Definitely.
Definitely, definitely, yes.
Unquestionably.
I say no.
We got 38 spots.
This is not the best.
If we don't win this, I'm back on the street.
Female singers, I absolutely love her.
But she was not as good in Vegas as she was in the audition.
I just don't want to be told no.
I thought the kids this year were terrific.
I think it's a no-brainer.
They both go through to Hollywood.
I want to live my dream.
I want to become more alive.
I think that America needs to see something like this.
Oh, don't be ridiculous, Howie.
It's unique.
It's funny.
Oh, Howie, you're talking nonsense.
I don't know if Hollywood's ready for me, but I'm ready for Hollywood.
There are so many great male singers this year.
This guy really impressed me this time 'round.
I just don't think that he's a star.
He can sing.
He ain't a star.
I been waiting for this since I was 12 years old.
I am beyond ready for this.
I love them.
I do not agree on him.
Don't be ridiculous.
- This? - No.
If he doesn't make it, I will be gutted.
Okay, we've made our decisions.
So let's go and deliver the news.
Come on.
Let's do it.
- All right.
- All right.
Now the acts will be called to the stage in their audition groups, and find out if they will make it through to Hollywood and the live performance shows.
Could you step forward, please? We spoke about you a lot last night.
We all came to the same decision.
You're going to Hollywood.
All right.
We're on.
All right.
Oh! Step forward, please.
You didn't make it.
I'm really sorry.
You gave it your best.
Yes, I did.
You'll have another day.
Hopefully.
Antonio It didn't go perfectly.
That must hurt, because I can tell how badly you wanted it.
You know what? You are going to Hollywood.
Whoo! Chips cooney and Murray, see you in Hollywood.
- Is he okay? - Get off the floor, you.
Get up.
Sometimes I love this job that I have, and sometimes I just hate it.
Unfortunately, guys, it ends here for you.
You weren't at your best when you performed.
It was a tough decision.
You're going to Hollywood.
- Yes! - Yes! - Ha ha ha! - Ha ha ha! You will not be going to Hollywood.
I'm afraid you're gonna be going home.
You're not gonna stop flying your kite, are you? No.
You keep going, all right? - Yeah.
- All right, man.
We're gonna see you in Hollywood.
Oh, yeah! How's it feel? - Feels amazing.
- Awesome.
We don't like to let anyone down.
We really don't.
We'll see you in Hollywood.
You know, you all should be so proud of yourselves.
You've come a long way in this competition.
Unfortunately, it stops here for you guys.
You've come this far, Sally.
Yes.
You're going to Hollywood.
Ooh! My God.
I didn't know I could still jump.
I'm 75 years old, and this is the greatest moment in my life.
You've seen all the spectacular dance groups that we have.
So here's the decision-- you're going home.
I'm so sorry.
But don't give up the dream.
Sorry it didn't turn out the way y'all wanted it to.
I just wanted it so bad, you know? We've come to a decision.
And the decision is that we'll be seeing you both in Hollywood.
Oh, my God! You're going to Hollywood.
We decided one harmonica player was all it was gonna be.
I'm afraid you just missed out.
You're in the top 48.
Yoo-hoo! Okay, I made it! You made it! Hey! I'm sorry.
You're going home.
I'm so sorry.
We like you.
You're both going to Hollywood.
Yes! Ha ha! I like you.
Yes! Two stand-up comedians.
One of you should go to the live shows.
Doogie.
Ah.
Um, if he gets sick and dies, do I take his place? If doogie dies, do you take his place? I'm extremely concerned.
Don't turn your back on her.
Mary Ellen, woman of mystery, you're going to Hollywood.
Oh! How you doing? I'm good.
How are you doing? I--just-- it's just fabulous.
It's your bad luck that you've entered America's got talent in the year when we've had the most singers.
I'm afraid we won't be seeing you again in Vegas, because you're both going to Hollywood.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
You are both fabulous singers.
I'm afraid I'm gonna wake up.
It's amazing.
We're gonna be sending you both home today.
But I'd like to thank you both very much.
I'm sorry, you're going home.
Gentlemen, step forward.
Both of you have said that you want to make this your life.
Michael grimm, Taylor Matthews, you're going to Hollywood.
This--this is the proudest moment of my entire life.
My grandparents, definitely wanted them to see-- see this.
This means the beginning of a new era.
So 27 acts are on their way to Hollywood.
Whoo! Hannibal in Hollywood.
It feels so good.
Tomorrow, the standbys will have the chance to perform for the The competition just got tougher.
