Blindspot (2015) s03e03 Episode Script

Upside Down Craft

1 Cheers.
Cheers.
Well, shall we check out the view? I already am.
What? I have an extremely hot wife.
- You can't blame me.
- So you're saying I should ditch the boots for heels more often? No.
I'm saying you should probably ditch that whole outfit and just keep the cuffs.
[ZAPATA.]
Guys, please stop.
You realize we can hear everything you're saying.
Everything.
[JANE.]
Sorry.
[READE.]
You guys still got eyes on Loewe? Yes, I do.
It's him and his daughter.
It could be his wife.
It's hard to tell.
[JANE.]
How are you guys making out down there? Breaking through the firewall now.
Okay, so get this.
My little cousin asked me for Patterson's autograph yesterday.
I told you.
That app she made is a big deal.
Whatever.
Who has time for stuff like that? Apparently 75 million people.
Wait.
Seriously? 75 million people at 3 bucks a pop? - That's like - We're in.
Suspect's on the move.
[ZAPATA.]
We don't have the files yet.
Excuse me, Mr.
Loewe, I just want to say, the work that you're doing for the children of Sumatra is remarkable.
Well, it's just so important to give back for the future.
[GASPS.]
Look.
Everything we need.
We got it.
Read him his rights! Kevin Loewe, FBI.
What the hell is this? You're under arrest for securities fraud, three counts of manslaughter, and conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism.
Turn around.
Come with me.
Hey, great work.
The evidence off Loewe's computers is a gold mine.
Nice.
How you holding up? You want to know the truth? Not great.
Say what you will about Silicon Valley, but at least my co-workers didn't end up dead.
Look, everyone will understand if you want to take some time off.
I'm fine.
I just got back.
How'd we do? A lot of great stuff coming off of Loewe's computers.
All right, good.
Here's how I wanna play it.
Thanks for the heads up about the arrest.
Kevin Loewe is one of the biggest names on Wall Street.
This bust has a lot of people in Washington very nervous.
The intel is solid.
Here.
Allow me.
So, Jane's back is covered in microscopic specks of luminescent ink.
I realized if you put a two-by-two centimeter grid on her back, each speck sits perfectly in the intersecting corners.
So, I took the specks, basically squished them together.
Turns out they're alphanumeric fragments.
[ZAPATA.]
And you'll recognize the formatting of the sequence.
It's how we code anonymous tips from the FBI hotline.
100B domestic terrorism.
The tip in question alleged Loewe's responsible for train derailment four months ago that killed three people.
The case file was dismissed for lack of evidence.
But the fact that it was on Jane's body made us look at it again.
Why would a billionaire want to crash a train? We didn't know either, until we discovered Loewe shorted KeyRail's stock and made a one-day gain of $350 million.
Well, what did you find on his servers? E-mails proving he paid an engineer to tamper with the brakes.
- Is he talking? - No, he's not.
His lawyer is inbound.
This evidence better be ironclad or we're about to have a PR nightmare on our hands.
- Hey.
- Hey.
How's it going? I know I know you told me not to, but I've been looking into Stuart's murder.
Patterson, we have an entire team on that.
I know, I know, but Stuart couldn't stop yapping about this Kinga home voice command system that he bought.
Said he would never have to lift a finger again.
"Hey, Kinga, buy me toilet paper.
" "Kinga, find me books on the singularity.
" What does that have to do with Stuart's murder? There's no mention of the device in the evidence log.
You think it recorded the murder? Yeah, but it's not that easy.
The company claims Kinga doesn't "actively" record conversations other than the voice commands.
But you think they do.
Well, I have a friend who worked on the coding, and she all but confirmed it.
Can this friend do us another favor? She doesn't have access anymore.
She cashed out her stock options and retired last month.
She was 32.
Okay, how are we supposed to get a warrant for something that doesn't exist? I don't know, but the way these servers work, the data is scrubbed after 72 hours.
That doesn't give us much time.
Well, I think they're gonna need a nudge, and by nudge, I mean a hammer on the head, like a house call from the Assistant Director of the FBI.
Hi.
There's a mace in the woodshed.
You need it to beat the manticore in the castle mist.
I'm sorry? Wizardville, right? Don't be embarrassed.
It's a quality app.
Special Agent Weller.
This is Jane.
Courtney Puritsky.
I'm Mr.
Loewe's attorney.
My client is innocent of all charges and needs to be released immediately.
We've seized dozens of e-mails linking your innocent client to the train derailment that happened in Pennsylvania four months ago.
No, you seized planted e-mails.
What do you mean, "planted"? An anonymous group of hackers has been terrorizing Mr.
Loewe for the past six months.
I have banker's boxes full of evidence to prove it firewall breaches, denial of service attacks, e-mail forgeries.
Why would they be targeting Mr.
Loewe? When you have the kind of wealth and influence he has, it attracts some negative attention.
So, why didn't you call the authorities? Mr.
Loewe can afford better investigators and security specialists than the FBI has access to.
- No offense.
- Offense taken.
So, what did these "specialists" say? They identified the hackers as an anonymous collective known as "The Three Blind Mice.
" We're gonna need to see those banker's boxes.
Not a problem.
And after that, I suggest you go after the Three Blind Mice and stop harassing my client unless you want a nine-figure lawsuit on your hands.
[DOOR OPENS, SLAMS SHUT.]
Oh, Patty Cakes in the house! What brings you down to my little corner office, huh? - [SCREECHING FEEDBACK.]
- Ooh! What is that? It's a scrambler.
Did you hack into Kevin Loewe's server? What? No.
Who? If you're lying to me, I swear I am not lying.
What are you talking about? There is a tattoo case pointing to the Three Blind Mice.
Hirst wants all hands on deck to track them down.
And I assume you put the kibosh on that? What was I supposed to say? "Hey, don't go after them.
"Turns out, two of the Three Blind Mice "are actually me and Rich.
"We did a bunch of illegal hacks that we should probably go to prison for.
" Yeah, you might want to work on your wording there.
I'd probably deemphasize the "illegal hacks" aspect, and the word "prison" should really not be part of your messaging It is only a matter of time before they come for us, and when they do I'm gonna lose my FBI consulting gig.
They're gonna send me back to jail.
I mean, it's not It'd be bad for both of us.
[PHONE CHIMES.]
It's Weller.
He wants to see me.
[PHONE CHIMES.]
Oh, me too.
Looks like time's up.
I'll go first.
You wanted to see us, mademoiselle? Yes, I did.
Ever heard of the Three Blind Mice? Yeah.
I believe they ran after the farmer's wife.
I think their tails got cut off at some point.
No, not the nursery rhyme, Rich, the hacker group.
We think they've been targeting this Wall Street guy we've been after.
Oh, those Three Blind Mice.
So you know them? No, no.
I mean, you know, I've been out of the game for a year, you know, since I became a law-abiding, law-enforcing crime-stopping citizen, right? It's not really my Well, the techs confirmed it.
Those emails were planted on Loewe's servers.
Okay, well, that doesn't mean they were forged.
He still could've written them.
Real or fake, tampered evidence is still inadmissible in court.
Sounds like you owe this Loewe guy an apology.
May I suggest an edible arrangement? Apologies won't cut it.
According to DC, we just publicly arrested and humiliated a powerful civilian under false pretenses.
I want this hacker collective on a silver platter.
Otherwise, Loewe is about to bury us with his billions.
You know, sometimes a simple "I was wrong" can do wonders.
Loewe's private investigators have done half the work already.
I have some security cam photos of one of the suspects stalking Loewe's residence.
You have a picture of them? Of the Three Blind Mice? They actually wear a mouse mask? [LAUGHING.]
That's a little on the nose.
Find this person.
- Do whatever it takes.
- Yes, ma'am.
- We can keep this? - No.
Put it down.
Okay.
- We have to come clean.
- Come clean? - Yeah.
- Come clean to what? We had no part of this.
We dropped out of Three Blind Mice a year ago because somebody thought it was getting too dangerous.
Well, Electra obviously took the banner and kept going without us.
We never should have helped her out.
Electra was a visionary, white hat hacking using black hat techniques, taking down all those so-called "untouchables" on Wall Street, in the government, everybody that we know is guilty but could never prove it.
I know.
I just got caught up in the hacktivism of it all.
- Yeah.
- Her code was so amazing.
I felt like we were Robin Hood's merry band of thieves.
Yeah, but, look, we don't have anything to do with this Loewe case.
There's nothing to worry about.
Nothing to? The FBI is targeting the hacker group we were a part of.
To do good.
It doesn't matter what the reasons were.
- It was illegal.
- Okay, you know what? Can we focus on the positives here? It's Three Blind Mice, right? Anonymous.
She doesn't know who we are.
We don't know who she is.
There is a literal firewall between us and Electra.
But if they go after the Three Blind Mice, they will trace it back to us.
Well, then, we'll make it a little harder for them, if you catch my drift.
By obstructing justice? Drift caught.
You just got the team to trust you.
Do you really want to jeopardize that again? If it means avoiding multiple felony charges, yes.
Yes, I do.
Absolutely.
And so do you.
I am so sorry, but that's just not true.
I promise, Kinga does not record private conversations.
I can get you a copy of our user agreement if you I'm an Assistant Director of the FBI, and I know what's going on here.
I need to speak to the most senior executive in this building now.
Okay.
I'll get our head of Global Security.
Your girlfriend's hilarious.
Since when are you texting Meg? Since we had the best time ever at brunch and yoga last weekend.
Don't take this the wrong way, but she's way out of your league.
She's beautiful, smart, successful.
- [PHONE CHIMES.]
- No daddy issues.
You'd better put a ring on that before I do.
It's the team.
- What you got? - Oh Okay, so I was able to use the mouse mask footage to study the suspect's body movements and I created a partial biometric profile.
Tell me you got a match.
We matched the suspect to a person seen at an ATM a mile from Loewe's estate, and I used this new experimental gait recognition technology the NSA has to confirm it.
And once we got a face, it was only a matter of time 'til we got a name.
Meet Kathy Gustafson.
[PATTERSON.]
35, single, lives in a studio in Yonkers.
Has over a dozen online dating memberships and works as an I consultant for Nerd Herd.
The most depressing criminal profile I've ever seen.
Any idea where she is now? Yeah.
I tracked her phone.
She's at Nerd Herd's midtown location.
Nicely done.
Thank you.
Yeah, super, super proud of the work we're doing here.
All right.
Send a team out, pick her up.
- Weller, you run the interrogation.
- Got it.
Actually, I will handle the questioning.
I'm getting a lot of heat from Washington to make this right.
I would love to have you two in with me.
I could use your expertise.
And we would love to provide it.
Keep us posted.
She's never seen our faces.
She has no idea who we are.
Oh, that's why I feel so relaxed right now.
Have I heard of the Three Blind Mice? Who hasn't? They're real famous, at least in the IT community.
Are you aware of the kinds of hacks they're responsible for? Disrupting government services in Germany, shutting down the stock market in Seoul, not to mention stealing millions of dollars.
Billions, actually.
Yeah, I know.
What's that got to do with me? Look familiar? [PATTERSON.]
We tracked your movements from an ATM to the Loewe estate.
We also know you used a computer at Nerd Herd in SoHo to hack Loewe's computer several times.
You bounced the signal to make it look like the IP address was coming from Antarctica, but we were able to trace it back.
You're caught, Kathy.
Help us, we can help you.
No.
I can help you.
What? You're coming at this all wrong.
We didn't disrupt government services in Germany.
We sent out a short that deleted the foreign minister's drive containing military secrets he was selling to Russia.
And as for the stock market glitch in Seoul, we prevented a total market collapse that would've spread through Southeast Asia.
And we never stole money.
Ever.
We stole back ill-gotten funds and returned them to the people who were screwed over by these corrupt companies and governments in the first place, and we never took a cent.
So, you're like the Robin Hoods of the dark web.
Is that an accurate assessment? That doesn't sound so bad to me.
Opposite, opposite.
That is very bad and very illegal.
[HIRST.]
Who are your partners? I don't know their names.
[HIRST.]
You don't know who you were working with? No, I didn't say that.
I just never met them in person and we didn't exchange names in case we ever got caught.
When's the last time you communicated? About a year ago, before we disbanded, which was not my choice, but I miss them so bad.
We're still best friends, though.
They're just layin' low for a bit.
So, how did you do it? How did you hack into Kevin Loewe's personal computer? Let me guess.
Your experts here can't figure it out.
Hmm.
You know, if I had to venture a hypothesis, I'd say you manipulated the blade pass frequency of the CPU fan, thereby remote accessing the main circuit board.
Is that in the right ballpark, or? That's actually pretty close.
Oh, by "pretty close," do you mean 100% correct, or? So you admit to falsifying e-mails on Kevin Loewe's server? No, I admit to putting back e-mails that Kevin Loewe deleted.
He's the criminal here, not us.
You know what? The only reason I'm telling you all this and not lawyering-up is people's lives are in danger.
What do you mean? Loewe just shorted a boatload of Volta Motors stock.
The last time he did that with KeyRail, he caused an accident that killed people.
You don't think he'll do it again? Kathy is clearly a skilled hacker, but we're gonna have to take everything else she says with a grain of salt.
I thought she was lovely.
I mean, got a bit of a hoarder vibe, but definitely not evil.
Is she right about Loewe's trading activity? We confirmed it.
He's shorted the stock.
Volta's launching their newest electric car tomorrow.
An attack at a high profile event like that would tank their stock.
We need to secure Volta's corporate headquarters.
- She could be messing with us.
- We can't take the chance.
I want teams in place at that launch tomorrow.
Fine, but let's keep a low profile.
Rich! Rich! Kathy is telling the truth about the attack on Volta Motors.
- How do you know that? - One of the unintentional byproducts of the way I coded the app for Wizardville gives me backdoor access to all my subscribers' phones.
- What?! - That's Shh! Okay.
You have access to over 75 million people's contact lists, e-mail accounts, photo libraries.
Okay, yes, but I've never used it - until now.
- Oh, I totally believe you.
Hey, is Hirst a subscriber? Oh, I bet she's got some real dirty secrets - in her browser history.
- Okay, Rich, listen to me.
Loewe's lawyer plays Wizardville, and I just hacked her phone.
Someone e-mailed asking if Green Point was on for today at 3:00.
That's where Volta's battery factory is located.
No batteries, no electric cars.
An attack that size would cripple Volta's stock.
Which means we have less than two hours to stop it.
Come on.
What? Let's go.
You said an attack is imminent! Don't we have to tell the whole team? - We can't! - Why not? What do you mean? - Hey, Gary.
- His name's Gary? - I've been calling him Rick.
- How did I get the intel? I can't say I used the illegal backdoor on my app to hack a lawyer's phone.
Well, now who's obstructing justice? You're right.
Okay, we need to come clean.
Whoa, whoa.
No.
No.
Gross.
We need to stay dirty, okay? Just let me think here.
Just give me a second.
Oh! Okay.
I got it.
I know how to fix this.
Come on.
What's so urgent? We know how Loewe's going to short the Volta stock.
An anonymous tip just came in.
[DISTORTED VOICE.]
There will be an attack on the Volta Motors battery factory in Green Point at 3 p.
m.
today.
That's 1500 hours hours hours The recording goes on for a while, but it says the information came from deleted e-mails in Loewe's account.
The same way Kathy found out about the train derailment.
Could she be the source? Not unless she can astral project.
She's been in holding this whole time.
Patterson, call in backup, I want Hazmat and emergency vehicles on site.
Wait.
What about Hirst? Shouldn't we verify this tip before we send teams out? No, we don't have the time.
If we're wrong, I'll take the heat.
If we're right, we save lives.
So, let's move.
[RICH.]
All right, ladies, it appears that most of the chemicals are directly beneath the production floor.
My guess is they're gonna try to hit that hard.
[WELLER.]
We're headed there now.
[PATTERSON.]
I've instructed all emergency vehicles to be on standby outside the facility.
We need to start the evac.
- Copy.
- [WELLER.]
We're gone.
FBI! Show me your hands! Show me your hands! Take your weapons out and put them on the floor now.
Don't shoot, whatever you do.
You set off a spark, and the whole building blows.
[GAS HISSING.]
Cut the gas lines.
We got 'em, Jane.
Bomb! Less than two minutes! Patterson, I'm sending a pic of an IED.
We need a little help here.
We've got less than two minutes.
So, it looks like the keypad lock is connected to the timer.
Can you disconnect the bomb from the timer? Maybe close the circuit somehow? No, don't touch the wires on the timer.
- That can speed up the clock.
- Sorry.
I'll figure out if I can find the blasting cap.
Give us a minute.
Yeah, well, that's about all you've got until this whole place blows! Hey! What's the code? [BEEPING.]
Look, unless you want to die, you need to stop this clock now.
No, no, no, no! Don't! [BEEPING.]
- Are you crazy? - You've got 30 seconds.
What's it gonna be? [BEEPING.]
Good choice.
[GRUNTING.]
- Hey! - Don't shoot! [GROANING.]
[GUNSHOT.]
How the hell did you know how to do that? I have a lot of new tricks.
Well done out there.
Any luck linking the guys from the factory to Loewe? They say they were hired by a "John Smith" who paid them via wire transfer.
I tried to track the money, but it was a dead end.
So, we have nothing on Loewe? I know this doesn't feel like a win, but we just averted a catastrophe today.
We'll get Loewe big fish like him just takes a little time to reel in.
Go home.
Get some rest.
Good work out there.
Hey, so correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the investigation into the Three Blind Mice is over.
It certainly seems that way.
I'm so sorry, but we don't keep that kind of data - on our Kinga devices.
- Right.
So, you just magically know which ads to target to which customers? I understand your "official" policy, but we know how this really works.
I wish I could help, but Your company has a data farm in Centerville, right? Yes.
So, what you're telling us is, if we were to send a team over there with a warrant, we wouldn't find any recordings of any Kinga devices? No, sir.
'Cause I'd hate to have to come back here and arrest you for giving a false statement to a federal agent, not to mention embarrass your company and have your stock take a tumble.
Let me see if there's something I can do.
No, don't see.
Just do.
I want the recordings by end of day.
- Ah! - All right.
I realize we shouldn't be seen with each other, but this is a little overkill.
Then why'd did you have me come meet you out here in this dump? - You texted me, dumbwad.
- Uh-uh-uh, you texted me.
- Oh, no.
- [GUN FIRES.]
Rich! - [GROANING.]
- Are you okay? [GROANING.]
- [GUN FIRES.]
- Oh! [PANTING.]
[GUN FIRES.]
[GROANING.]
- Kathy? - It's okay, guys.
They're just bean bag rounds.
I'm rescuing you! No.
No, no, no, no.
No, no, no, no, no! [GUN FIRES.]
Patterson.
Hey.
[GROANING.]
What the hell is this place? It smells like manure.
You know [GROANING.]
You know, just once, I'd like to get kidnapped somewhere exotic like Mykonos, Ibiza.
It's always got to be some dungeon, and not the good kind of dungeon.
Hey, look.
There's a door.
Oh okay.
[GROANING.]
Okay.
Wait, Rich.
- Rich, wait! - [GROANING.]
Are you okay? Are you okay? - Are we wearing shock collars? - Yeah.
- Oh.
- She must have set up a perimeter.
Oh, my God.
She's gonna make us play The Hunger Games, isn't she? - Get it off.
Get it off.
- I don't know where the Hi, guys.
Have a seat.
Get cozy.
[LAUGHING.]
Are you guys all right? Can I get you a soda or something? A snack? You don't have any soft pretzels, do you? What do you want with us, Kathy? I know this must be upsetting and confusing, but it's gonna be okay now.
The Three Blind Mice, reunited again.
I got your clue! The blade pass frequency? Who else would know that? And you.
"Opposite, opposite.
" How many times did you write that in our text chats? Who else says that? Yeah, who else does say that? - Rich, shut up.
- Don't tell me to shut up.
Wait.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
Rich Dotcom? You're Rich Dotcom, aren't you? I knew it! This whole time, I was working with a living legend! Oh, aren't you sweet.
I don't know about legend or what you're talking about.
Okay.
You got us.
We're your old partners.
Kathy, you've got to let us go.
You can't do this.
You know, when I first realized you two were working together without me, and for the Feds, of all people, I'm not gonna lie that was a low for me.
But then I realized, you're victims.
You got caught and the government brainwashed you.
And back in that interrogation room, that was you subconsciously asking for help.
The longer you keep us here, the worse it's gonna be for you when they catch you.
Oh! Listen to yourself.
They've gotten in your heads.
They've infected you.
You did kind of sound a lot like Weller just then.
But I'm here now, 'cause that's what friends - do for each other.
- Okay.
You're safe with me, and we can get back to our work.
God, I missed this! - Here.
- What is this? It's our to-do list.
You want us to break into the Federal Reserve, steal medical records for every world leader? What do you need all of these social security numbers for? Kathy, come on, you don't need us for these hacks.
I know I don't need you, but what's the fun of doing them alone when we're all together, the way it was meant to be? You guys have forgotten how much fun we used to have, and I'm gonna remind you.
We can't do these things.
We righted wrongs.
This is not what we stood for! We helped people.
I think it's high time for a rebrand.
[PHONE CHIMES.]
Hmm.
- Here, bud.
- Thanks.
- Mm-hmm.
- Here, love.
Thank you.
- Uhh! You play Wizardville, right? Oh, I'm obsessed.
Kurt says I have a problem.
You do.
Tasha.
- Okay, explain that.
- [HORN TRUMPETING.]
That noise What is it and how do I turn it off? Oh, it's telling you there's a high-level player on the same Wi-Fi.
But that's weird, because it's definitely not me and Kurt's never played before.
[PHONE CHIMES.]
Reade? Zapata? Something you wanna tell me? - [LAUGHING.]
- No.
- What level are you on? - Well, first of all, they're called "quests," not "levels.
- Really? You too? - Oh! Why didn't you tell me, huh? Because you were embarrassed.
No, because you're ultra competitive and bossy, and the last thing I need is for you to be trying to tell me how to play a damn video game.
Oh, okay.
I'm gonna kick your ass.
You won't know a Hobbit from a hole in the ground.
There's no Hobbits in Wizardville.
We'll see when I'm done with it.
That doesn't make sense.
Shh! Mira.
Okay, we need to get word out to the team.
How do you propose we do that? We're wearing shock collars, for crying out loud.
She's not gonna let us make a phone call.
We've got one play here, - and that's to go along with her plan.
- No.
No.
We are not doing those hacks.
Listen to me.
I've got a lot of experience with obsessive, psychotic women who desire me sexually, all right? Look, I don't have time to explain the subtle nuances of nonverbal flirtation with you right now.
- What is your point? - We've just got to live out the fantasy for a little while, okay? We just do a couple of the less harmful hacks and then, when we're best friends again, we say, "Hey, you know what would make this easier? Taking off the Running Man shock collars.
" No.
We work for the FBI, Rich.
We can't just hack What do you say, Blind Micers? Ready to rock? - We're in! - [LAUGHS.]
Yes! Okay, I've already hacked into Congressman Shusterman's tablet.
The rest is up to you.
And no funny business.
You try to contact your "friends" at the FBI and we turn those collars up to 11.
- That does not sound right.
- [LAUGHING.]
- [PHONE CHIMES.]
- Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Patterson just sent me an e-mail.
She's bailing on us for dinner with Rich.
- What? - Yeah.
Give me that.
I'm gonna tell her to get her butt over here.
See? Bossy for no reason.
Wait.
She signed with her first name.
She never uses her first name.
She replied to my text with an e-mail.
Something's wrong.
It's our responsibility to make the Internet a safe place for our children.
That's why I support Proposition 77.
Together, we can stop predators.
[CAMERA SHUTTERS CLICKING.]
[REPORTERS REACTING.]
[SHUSTERMAN.]
Shut it down! Shut it down! [KATHY.]
Watching you guys, it's like watching Picasso paint the Mona Lisa.
Right.
So, can you let us go now? After one hack? No.
That was just the warm up.
Can we choose off the list? Because, you know what? I've already hacked most of the Kardashians, so I could just give you what I have on my phone.
Kevin Loewe is piloting his Gulfstream to Martha's Vineyard with his wife as we speak.
I just need you to crash it into the ocean.
- You want us to crash a plane? - This one's his.
You're in charge of manipulating the flight deck and air traffic control, okay? And this one's hers.
You will be breaching the firewalls while I break the codes, just like old times.
No, no, no, no, no, no.
No, this is murder, Kathy.
Exactly.
Just like how it was murder when Loewe's little "accident" cost my brother his life.
What? My brother was on the train that Loewe crashed, and I gave the FBI everything it needed to put him away forever, and your friends did nothing.
Kathy, I am so sorry, but there is a right way and a wrong way to do this.
No, we're ridding the world of a man who kills innocent people to make a buck.
This is public service at its best.
She kind of has a point.
Kathy, you have every right to be angry about your brother, but we are not executioners, and Loewe's wife didn't kill anybody.
Rich, don't do this.
You've worked so hard to get where you are now right now, on the right side of the law.
You're going to be a tough walnut, aren'tcha.
Don't get sucked into this.
Do you want to go back to prison? This woman is crazy.
And I'm starting to think you're not a very good friend.
[GROANING.]
She just doesn't get us.
Now, don't make me shock you.
Patterson and Rich's phones are off.
Agents confirmed neither of them are at home.
I tracked Patterson's e-mail.
The IP address was from Antarctica.
Just like the Loewe hacks.
You think Kathy's behind this? - How? She's in custody.
- Not anymore.
She paid her $2 million bail in cash two hours ago.
Why was bail even set? Looks like her big-time lawyers negotiated it.
Hey, a team found Patterson and Rich's cars in an abandoned lot in Brooklyn.
No sign of them anywhere.
[TYPING.]
[BEEPS.]
Okay.
Once I hit "enter," Loewe's plane will disappear from the ATC radar.
Thirty seconds after that, it will begin its nosedive.
And two minutes from now, it will be sinking to the bottom of the Atlantic.
Tell me you didn't miss this.
You know, you're right.
I haven't felt this much like myself in a long time.
[MUFFLED SHOUTING.]
Oh! [CHUCKLES.]
I think this calls for a celebration! We went down the list of all the places Kathy's worked as an IT consultant over the past ten years.
One of her former employers was the Richmond Zoo.
Didn't that place shut down? Over six months ago, but someone turned the power on this afternoon.
An abandoned zoo.
Not a bad place to hold someone captive.
Right.
Let's do it.
Mmm, this is absolutely fantastic.
I should've had you pegged for a foodie.
Mmm, mmm, mmm.
Is this foie gras? Kinda.
Today has been perfect.
Cheers, Rich Dotcom.
Enchanté.
[COMPUTER BEEPING.]
Wait, why is someone here? How did they find us? Was this you, Rich? Did you do this? No! I swear! You've been standing over me this whole time.
It was you, wasn't it! [MUFFLED.]
No No! No! Loewe's plane landed?! How is that possible? You crashed Wait, how could you do this to me? We're friends! You know what? I'm gonna go ahead and blame this on the auto-pilot.
Stop lying to me! Unh! [MUFFLED SHOUTING.]
Looks like your FBI friends are driving a standard government issue SUV.
This is almost too easy.
Okay, so, according to the ConEd report, the building pulling all the power is just straight ahead on the main road.
Copy that.
[LOCKS CLICKING.]
[ZAPATA.]
What the hell?! [RADIO PLAYING.]
It's Kathy she's hacking the car.
I can't brake and I can't steer! Cut the power! Front doors out! Go! I'm sorry about your new friends sort of.
[SNIFFLING.]
You know, I used to dream of the day we'd finally meet face-to-face.
This is not how I pictured it.
When we first met in that chat room, it's like I finally felt like I belonged, you know? I thought you guys understood me, you liked me.
[MUFFLED TALKING.]
Yes? Did you have some final words? I-I wanted to apologize for betraying you.
Thank you.
We were a good team.
We were more than that.
We had something special.
We took down a lot of very bad people, and we were friends.
We were, weren't we? You inspired me.
You know that? Your moral compass that never wavered, not once.
You made me want to do something good with my life to help people [SOBS.]
Which is why this hurts so bad.
Kathy, no! - Goodbye, Rich! - [GUNSHOT.]
[ELECTRICITY CRACKLING, COLLAR BEEPING.]
[WHIMPERING.]
Jane, find the fuse box! [PANTING.]
Kathy Gustafson, you're under arrest.
[GROANING.]
All right? I'm okay.
[WELLER.]
Patterson! - [ZAPATA.]
Rich! - It is not foie gras! - He's fine.
- [SIGHS AND GRUNTS.]
- [RICH.]
Mixed with Polysporin.
- Yeah, I know, but [ZAPATA.]
You guys all right? Just some minor burns.
Hirst wants to make tracking the other Mice a top priority.
[WELLER.]
We've been working Kathy over in interrogation [JANE.]
Yeah, but unfortunately, she refuses to give up her partners.
Says she's a mouse, not a rat.
She's really committing to this mouse bit, huh? What I don't get is why she chose to kidnap you two.
It's pretty risky, going after an FBI agent and her consultant.
Hmm.
Yeah, uh, she was a huge Rich Dotcom fangirl.
I didn't know that was a thing.
All right, here's my take on it.
Kathy was a part of an elite three-person hacker team, but she never met the other two members.
Right.
Now, this hacker team probably started out with good intentions, like she said, but when everything went sideways, the other two members just cut loose.
They left her hanging.
That had to hurt her feelings.
Well, I mean, you know, she's only human, right? Now what if over the course of today, she figured out who the other two partners were.
I bet she'd be very angry at them, maybe even want to kidnap them.
It's a shame we don't have any hard evidence, because if we did I'd be forced to charge those two members to the full extent of the law.
Yeah, that would be pretty bad.
For them, you know, whoever they are.
Look, what really concerns me is that this tattoo wasn't just about Loewe.
It was about exposing secrets of people who may or may not be in this very room.
Like when the Perseus tattoo revealed Jane's K and R work.
Roman wants to expose things about us.
The question is why? - [DOOR CLOSES.]
- Sorry I'm late.
Got that.
That smells awesome.
What is it? Vegan lasagna.
No.
- It's a new recipe.
- Awesome.
[CHUCKLING.]
Okay, I am making you a steak, medium rare, just like you like it.
Okay, so have I told you that I love you? It's been a couple hours.
- Really? - Mm-hmm.
So, can I say it again? - [LAUGHING.]
Yes.
- I love you.
I love you.
Oh, I love you.
- I love you, I love you! - Aah! - I'm gonna jump in the shower.
- Okay.
- [PHONE VIBRATING.]
- No, you're coming.
No, I'll be right there.
No.
No, no, no.
I'll be right there.
All right, I'll be quick! Hello? Hello, Jane.
How are you? What do you want? I want to know what it's like being back with your husband, your old job, all your old friends These new tattoo cases You're trying to take us down with them, aren't you? This new person you've become you refuse to see the bad in anyone.
Oh, so you're doing this to protect me? No.
You betrayed me, sis.
I'm doing this to make you bleed.
There's not a day I don't think about you about what happened between us.
I live with my guilt and the pain of where we are.
I'm already hurting.
You don't know the meaning of the word but you will.
And I'm going to enjoy every minute of watching you suffer.
Hey, I thought you went home.
I wanted to do a quick analysis of the Kinga recording you got us.
Now, have a listen.
[DOG BARKING ON RECORDING.]
That's it? No voices? Nothing during the time of Stuart's murder? Which is weird.
What's also weird is this noise I isolated from this clip.
[SIREN WAILS ON RECORDING.]
[READE.]
A siren? Yeah.
Now listen to this.
[DOG BARKING AND SIREN WAILING ON RECORDING.]
You just played that.
No, what I played was from earlier that same day.
Someone copied this section and spliced it in later.
Someone's trying to cover up the time of Stuart's murder.
Who would have access to do this? Someone very powerful.
Okay, there's something else.
I was finally able to unlock the tattoo that Stuart was obsessed with.
Let's quit sweating the small stuff and focus all our energy on this one tattoo.
If you write out the molecular structure, the atomic bonds look like normal lines.
If you zoom in to a microscopic level, there are actually dozens of lines made of three different thicknesses.
It's a code.
Long story short, each of these letters spell out the names of over a dozen people.
I ran vector searches to try to see if there were any connections between them.
It turns out, each of those people were previous owners of Van Gogh's famous self-portrait.
Meaning? That's where I'm stuck.
So all we know is, on Stuart's last day alive, he was trying to decode this Van Gogh tattoo.
What does a one-eared painter have to do with the murder of an FBI agent? Did you follow my instructions? I did everything you asked me to do.
Then you'll never have to see me again.
