Blue Murder (2003) s05e04 Episode Script

This Charming Man

Most of this lot are off out now.
Me, I was ready for my cocoa and my jimjams half an hour ago.
- When does that happen? - (Shouting and clattering) Get off me! Well, lucky you! Yeah, night, Richard.
Oh, God, really? Definitely got to go and get a shirt.
Definitely.
I've got to go.
It's my mum.
I'll see you later.
I could've got the bus.
I'll remember that next time you want dropping at your mate's house.
I saw your band getting in that van a minute ago.
- Oh, what? - Very cute, I must say.
If you wake up Charlotte I'm putting her here with you.
Cos all the roads you walk down Divides all our lives now You're never gonna feel me again - Hello? # When you see me I thought you changed your mind.
- Yeah, you'd better come up.
You're never gonna feel this again The roads you walk down Divides our lives now You're never gonna see me again It's the concierge, Mr Taylor.
- Open the door, Mr Taylor.
It's the concierge.
Mr Taylor.
- You want to get to bed earlier.
Is that an offer? Didn't think you'd surface till lunch time.
I wouldn't have done if it wasn't for that stupid boiler.
Why can't you get a new one? Well, I will do, when I win the lottery and meet a millionaire.
I need to see your washing sometime this month.
No, not you, Shap.
Who? Thanks for your help, love.
Jack Taylor, 20.
Died of head injuries sustained after a fall down the stairs.
Shared the flat with his brother Sam.
No sign of him.
Body found this morning by the concierge.
He'd gone up after complaints he'd been playing music all night.
- He has my sympathy.
Why not go up sooner? - He shuts up shop at 11.
Obviously, cos that's when all the criminals go to bed.
Seems our victim was some sort of rock star.
I've never heard of him.
Jack Taylor? Oh, yeah, lead singer with Rule 7.
Big local band.
Sort of indie rock.
Played the Apollo last night.
We should contact the rest of the band, check movements, alibis.
I think brother Sam played lead guitar.
Word's got out quick.
Yeah, find out from that lot if they were here last night and saw anything.
Check CCTV for the lobby.
There isn't any.
They've got a concierge, haven't they? Kat's talking to him.
Grazes on the head and marks on the wall mean he probably hit his head a couple of times on the way down, then finally landed here.
The blood smear suggests the body was moved away from the door.
Probably when the concierge tried to get in.
No.
Early stages of rigor mortis and body temperature, I'd say he died between 2 and 3am.
The blood would've congealed by the time he was discovered.
- So Jack wasn't alone.
- Mm.
So hehe tumbles down the stairs, bangs his head here, and then.
.
Grabs the rail, tumbles down the stairs a bit more.
But he bangs his head again and then goes down, slumped on the floor.
So whoever's with him tries to get out, butthe gap's not big enough.
So theypull the door towards themmoving the body - Smearing the blood across the floor.
- Yeah, and they manage to get outshut the door and the body slumps back against it.
Why didn't they get an ambulance? When you're finished, what I've been trying to say is he was probably hit on the head with a brick or something.
There's particles of red dust and deep bruising to the base of the head over a fairly large area.
I'll know more once I get him back.
- Thanks - I know.
As quick as I can.
- She's good.
- Yeah, she is good.
Wow, what a pad.
- All right, boss? - Burglary? I doubt it.
Imagine what you'd get for that down the pub.
My God, it's a two-room system.
- It plays one track down here and one upstairs.
- Fascinating.
He's probably right.
No sign of forced entry.
Could have got off his head and smashed the place up.
- Looks like he's had guests.
- In my experience of 20-year-old boys - You wish.
- .
.
they could've been there weeks.
OK.
Get those sheets to the lab.
We're looking for a murder weapon.
A house brick.
- Or something made out of terracotta.
- Boss Or clay.
- Clay.
JT.
- Fantastic.
Jack Taylor? Get it to the lab.
Let's go and talk to his parents.
It's your turn.
- No, no - It's your turn.
- I did it last time.
- How can you say that? - Your turn.
- We'll do it together.
They wanted me to cut a record, you know.
- Yeah, I could've had a career.
- I want to see him.
- It's not possible, Mrs Taylor.
We need to preserve the scene of crime.
Samcan you take us through what happened after the Apollo last night, please, Sam? ErmI don't know, we er we dropped the other three boys off at their flat.
Damon plays bass, Rick does rhythm.
Tommy's our drummer.
And erm - Matt dropped me here at about 11:15.
- Jack was the last? You shared a flat together.
So why didn't you go home? - What's that got to do with this? - I'm sorry, Mr Taylor.
I know this is a difficult time for you but .
.
we have reason to believe Jack may have been murdered.
Oh, my God! No! We are trying to piece together as quickly as possible what happened last night.
Did you hear Sam come in? We sat up chatting till gone one.
He went up to bed.
And I went up five minutes after.
This is still their home.
They know they can come back any time.
So he didn't fall down the stairs, then? How did he? Lin So I was upstairs asleep while my son my lad was being murdered.
Wondering why I wasn't there to help him.
Cos I'm his mum! And that's what mums are supposed to do, right? Anyone you can think of that Jack might have fallen out with? Do you know if he was planning to meet anyone back at the flat? No girlfriend? - No-one special.
- So you lived together, you worked together.
You must've been very close? No arguments or anything last night? Everything was cool.
OK.
Oh, God! If you could tell your mum and dad we'll be in touch.
I saw them arguing outside the gig last night.
Why would he lie? So do you mind if we stop off at mine for five minutes? Gimme what I want, I need some more At least one parents' evening should be a breeze.
Budge up.
Hi, darling.
Michael, it's your mum.
Do you remember me? Can you give me a call? Let me know you're OK.
Just want to know how things are going, all right? - Who's that? - Chanelle.
I'm letting you know once I got it I won't let it go Don't cry.
- It's not fair.
- I know.
I know.
- Was she there? - Who? His stupid girlfriend.
Darling, he didn't have a girlfriend.
If you don't know that, then Amy Kirkland.
She's not even pretty.
Yeah.
No, all right.
Thanks.
Could have been you.
- Who was that? - Butchers.
Toxicology report.
Nothing there.
How long had you been going out with him? 18 months.
We met here.
That's why I wanted to come in.
He started chatting me up, telling me I'd be selling his albums one day.
Then he actually made it.
He came back later.
He asked me out for a drink and that was it.
Were you at the gig last night? What about after? I went back to his flat about half-twelve.
Do you have a key? He was He was in a mood.
He got like that sometimes after gigs.
So he was in a mood.
Did you argue? I loved him so much.
Last night I didn't get a chance to say it and now he'sdead.
What happened? I thought it was best that I just let him get over it, so I left.
So the band does a gig - a big gig at the Apollo and he just went home to bed? No celebrations? No partying? - What time did you get home? - I don't know.
About half-one.
Can anyone confirm that? Parents? - My flatmate, Sophie.
- Right.
How did you get back? I walked.
That's a long way.
Along a main road? Oxford Road.
Why are you asking me all these questions? Just one more thing.
Why didn't you get in the van at the end of the gig? He likes it to be, you know, just the lads.
Right.
So that girl who got in with them.
- Nothing to do with Jack, then? - None of them mean anything! Girls, they threw themselves at him all the time but he always came back to me! And that one.
- She obviously loved him.
- Bunny boiler.
Sex and drugs and rock'n'roll.
- There were no drugs.
- Yeah, right.
- Tenner OK? - 20.
20 quid says tox report comes back positive.
20 quid? We're paying you too much! All right, 20 quid it is.
You're on.
OK, everyone, what have we got? Jack Taylor.
Victim.
Singer with Rule Concierge finds him dead at the bottom of his stairs in the flat he shares with his brother Sam, who's also in the band.
Concierge tried to wake him up at 7:30 but he had to use his master key to get in.
- Door would only open about 20 centimetres.
- Time of death between 2am and 3am.
Now, Sam says he was dropped off at his mum and dad's house by Matt Ferrer, who's the band's manager, at 11:15.
We also know that Sam and Jack, the brothers, had a row as they were leaving The Apollo.
- Which he denied.
- And he's also denied the fact that Jack had a girlfriend.
Amy Kirkland.
They'd been going out together for 18 months.
- Anything from CCTV, Sid? - No.
- What about the car park? - Just residents.
Nothing in from other sources.
Anything from the fans? - No.
They were at the concert.
- Went to the flats when they heard the news.
- Lab report? We've had confirmation that it wasn't the fall that killed Jack.
He died from an acute subdural haematoma: the bruising at the base of the skull was inflicted before he fell by a blunt instrument.
Yeah, we think we've got the murder weapon.
It's a sort of red terracotta clay arty thing.
Sent off for tests.
So the victim's attacked, assailant escapes and the victim, disorientated, falls down the stairs.
Or they get a whack on the back of the head and then get pushed down the stairs just to make sure.
The killer at this point doesn't know the blow was fatal.
It was a tight squeeze to get out, though, so make sure that CSI checks that door frame for fingerprints, DNA, fibres.
- Toxicology? - Alcohol present but no drugs.
No drugs.
Butchers and Shap, get yourselves to the Apollo, see who was there and what they saw.
Sam says that Matt Ferrer dropped Jack off last, so I think we should go and have a word with him.
It's 15.
20, now.
- Thanks.
You already phoned her with the toxicology report, hadn't you? - Yeah.
- Taxi for Shap, please.
Yeah.
Yeah, right.
Yeah.
Thanks.
Yeah.
Listen I'm gonna have to get off, OK? Thanks for that.
That's great news.
Cheers.
Bye.
Sorry.
It was the record company - covering the funeral expenses.
- Good of 'em.
- Believe me, Mick and Linda'll be very grateful.
They'll want to give the boy a good send off.
We all will.
The company had Jack well insured.
Any company would have.
It's good business.
I understand Jack was the last to be dropped off last night.
Rick, Damon and Tommy'd had a skinful so I dropped them off with some bird.
Then I dropped Sam at his mum's.
Dropped Jack about 11:30.
Got here about midnight.
- Can anyone corroborate that? - No.
- Did you go back to Jack's flat? - What for? To murder him? No, I didn't.
But then I would say that, wouldn't I? How long had you known Jack? Known him just over two years.
I got a tip-off and went to see them play at some dingy pub.
- You could see they had something.
- Did they all get along? Yeah.
Jack ruled the roost for the most part.
Everyone was happy to go along with him.
- For the most part? - Five lads pumping testosterone, - they're never going to get along 24/7.
- What about you? - Did you think he was a bit of a handful? If your lead man's not a handful he's not going to be a good lead man, is he? But there was only one person in charge and that was me.
Sam and Jack had a row getting in the van.
Do you know why? No, music was blaring.
- Sam's a good kid.
- So they were close? Odd that Sam didn't know Jack had a girlfriend.
If you're talking about Amy, she wasn't exclusive.
At least, not on his part.
He was 20.
Do you own another vehicle apart from the van? Yeah, I've got a BMW Sport.
Yeah, I've seen it.
It's nice.
Yeah, all right, you've been very helpful, Mr Ferrer.
Thanks very much.
I used to sing a bit, you know.
I recognise that band.
- They're garage, aren't they? - That's right.
They paid for the three Bs, them.
Boob jobs, butt lifts and Botox.
I've got two ex-wives.
It don't come cheap.
Rule 7 were an investment in the future.
That's what this game's about.
Risk.
20% of nothing is nothing.
It's a bloody nightmare of a job.
You have no idea! - They wanted me to cut a track, you know.
- DI Mayne, come on.
Garage! You're not the only one who's down with the kids, you know.
Richarddo yourself a favour and never, ever say that in front of anyone under 25.
This brings me back.
Still the same.
The smell.
I did my first drugs bust out there.
So, who else was there? Well, apart from the band, the crew, manager, some guys from the record label, but they left.
Oh, yeah, and Billy Radfield came by.
- That was cool.
- Billy Radfield? Used to be in the band.
Went solo.
So, no outrageous demands, then? Well, they're not exactly Oasis.
Beer, crisps.
Just shit like that.
- What sort of stuff d'you like then? - Er, well My dad's into Phil Collins and guys like that.
Was there anyone else back there? Just the usual girls hanging about.
You know, big lips, big tits.
One of them was all over Jack like a rash.
- It's always the lead singer, innit? - Tell me about it.
- It weren't the girlfriend.
- It's never the girlfriend when they want to do it in public up against a wall.
But she was there.
Saw the whole thing and ran out.
Looked like Sam was gonna give him a right bollocking.
You don't remember her name, do you? CCTV shows the van heading away from the area around the flat at 11:38.
Then again at 11:52, close to Ferrer's home.
Hasn't turned up on any other CCTV and nor has his car.
Right.
Doesn't totally rule him out but I just don't see what he's got to gain.
What about Amy's flatmate? We need to check that alibi.
- Yeah, we've not tracked her down yet.
- You two? Seems our lad were caught with his pants down after the show.
Couple of the kids working there said he was caught shagging some groupie - that was hanging around backstage.
- And his girlfriend saw 'em at it.
- Right, have we got the groupie's name? - Yes.
She signed in at the stage door under the name of Lila Sackville-Boyd.
- Those posh birds are the worst.
- I don't know how you'd know.
According to the rest of the band, she went back with them and left about 5am.
So that must be the girl I saw getting into the van and it tallies with what Matt Ferrer said.
There was also a lad called Billy Radfield backstage.
He used to be in Rule 7 but left about nine months ago.
He's had one single out.
Went to 48 in the charts.
Timberlake won't lose any sleep, then! - Justin.
- Anyone check Jack's phone records? He had a call from Amy Kirkland and one from his parents just before the gig.
He received some texts afterwards.
People congratulating him.
Then he made a call to a Liam Whittick at 1:36.
According to the fan sites, he's shooting the band's promo for the new single.
Right.
OK.
So Amy's got motive.
She saw Jack having sex with another girl.
She goes back to the flat, they argue, things get nasty But if her alibi stands up Shap, can you find the flatmate? - Boss.
- And you two, get hold of Billy Radfield.
Let's find out why he left the band.
See if he could've been at the flat last night.
You and me, let's go and talk to Liam Whittick.
No-one buys albums or CDs any more.
You just download what you want.
It's not the same, though.
A vinyl record is like a beautiful piece of art.
I bet you've got 'em catalogued! Stored alphabetically! - Why do men of your age do that? (Rock music plays) I'm out to the teeth With the thoughts that I'm aching to say I hadn't seen the lads since I left the band.
Matt said it'd be all right to pitch up.
It was mental backstage so Jack said it'd be better to go to his for a drink afterwards.
- So you left the band on good terms? - Yeah.
They're a good bunch of lads.
- It were professional differences.
- When did you leave? - About 12:20.
- Quick drink.
- Thought you'd have a bit of catching up to do.
- He was knackered after the gig.
Where d'you go after? - He stayed at mine.
Yeah.
Yeah, I lost my keys so I gave Matt a call.
You never mentioned that.
- I didn't think it was important.
Yeah, well, that's for us to decide.
Lying and wasting police time is treated very seriously.
Understood.
If that's everything, time is money.
You must be disappointed with how the single did.
Maybe you'll do better now you've got new management.
Liam Whittick.
Do you know him? Yeah, he's a friend of Jack's.
He'd just started filming our promo.
- Your choice? - Jack's.
The talent always thinks it knows best.
It rarely does.
Yeah, right.
With Jack out of the way, Billy gets to re-launch his career with Rule 7.
Yeah, all right, see you back at the station.
Turns outBilly Radfield spent the night at Matt Ferrer's that night.
His new manager, apparently.
And according to Butchers Mr Ferrer's not a big fan of Hiya.
Can I help? Jack rang me.
He wanted me to go over the material I'd shot.
But I said there was no way I was going round that time of night.
He hung up on me.
Right andthis material - it's for the music video, yeah? - Mm.
The rest of the lads wanted to get the gig out of the way first but Jack was keen to crack on so we agreed to shoot his stuff first.
We'd only done a couple of days and then the stuff at the Apollo.
And it's not your usual thing, music video.
I did a couple when I was at art college.
That's where I met Jack.
He was my student.
But, no, it's not my usual thing, but it's where the money is.
- What time did you get home? - Just after midnight.
Then, of course, he worked for an hour before coming to bed.
- My wife, Cassie.
The police.
About Jack.
- Poor Jack.
Sorry, I was in the bath.
Move quickly and there's a deluge.
- How long you got? - One more month.
Can't wait.
- Yeah, I remember it.
Is it your first? - Mm.
So what's going to happen with this music video now? (Exhales) It's up to Matt, I guess.
In which case I shan't be holding my breath, waiting for a call.
How does anyone ever build a reputation if you're never given a break? - It would've been brilliant.
- My daughter would have loved to see it.
- Yeah? - Mm.
Have a copy.
There's not much but somebody should enjoy it.
Thanks.
Good luck with the baby.
- You totally manipulated that.
- Me? Never.
Should earn me a few Brownie points, though.
- Hiya.
- Hi.
Ooh! What a star! - Want a hand? - It's algebra.
Enough said.
Where's your sister? Probably married to a weirdo in a dress by now.
At a vigil.
Jack was a talent.
A big talent.
And he was a great lad.
His family, the band, me, his fans.
We're all going to miss him.
- Is she there? - Yeah.
Yeah, she's with her mate's mum.
Coffee? - What happened to diet and dog-walking? - This is a treat.
Why don't she just get a cab? Go back.
Shap Who's that? SHAP: That's Sam Taylor.
And his mum said he was in at 11:15.
Looks like he went out again, doesn't it? - I think there may be something going on there.
(Cellphone rings) Yeah.
Shap No, I can't come back now.
MATT: The boy's death is a tragedy.
You sure it's him? .
.
that's what he would have wanted.
- No.
OK.
No sign of Amy Kirkland on the CCTV.
But Sam Taylor's out and about - when he told us he was tucked up in bed.
- Really? You want me to bring him in? Yeah.
But, Richard Discreet, yeah? As I said, I can't pass any comment on that at the moment.
I do apologise.
Sam, would you mind coming for a chat with us down at the station? - It won't take long.
- Yeah, no worries.
I didn't lie.
I went home, talked to mum and I went to my room.
Yeah, but there's one little detail you forgot.
You didn't stay there.
You got your alibi, then sneaked out to see Jack.
We've got you on CCTV in Oxford Road.
I didn't go to Jack's.
Like you didn't have an argument with him after the gig.
Like you didn't know Amy was his girlfriend.
How long have you been in love with her, Sam? Amy? Did Jack know? Did he wind you up about it? Was there a bit of sibling rivalry that got out of hand? There he was, treating her badly, shagging other girls under her nose, humiliating her yet she still preferred him over you.
Now, that's gotta hurt.
Seemed like the only way you'd get her was if he was out of the picture.
- Is that what the argument was about? Amy? - Yeah! Yeah, it was about her.
But if you think I killed my brother over a girl You want to know where I was? That's where I was.
Call her.
She'll remember.
I'm sorry to keep you waiting.
You've brought him in here like he's some kind of bloody criminal! No, I just need to clear up a few details, that's all.
He's just lost his brother! Have you got kids, have you? Yeah.
Yeah, I have.
I bet there are times when they act like they hate one another too? But at the end of the day, they're blood.
Do you think the lad could put his mother through this? You wake up, the sun's shining.
Everything's normal.
Two hours later, you're having to think about where to bury your child.
I don't think I'm going to get through this.
Look, it's late.
Why don't you take Sam home while we check some details? I thought the point of being a rock star was that you didn't have to pay for it.
If he's in love with Amy, why would he go with a prostitute? No commitment, no emotion.
Just sex with someone who doesn't care if you're thinking about someone else.
I'll erspeak to her, shall I? Yeah, yeah.
See if she remembers Sam and, if so, what time he left.
OK What else? SHAP: We tracked down Amy's flatmate, Sophie.
Student.
Turns out she crashed at a mate's on Friday night.
Hasn't been home since.
- So she can't corroborate Amy's story.
- Why lie? Don't know.
But she's got a dozen missed calls from Amy on her mobile.
I think we should talk to Amy again.
Let's keep on at the lab about that terracotta head.
So this is the land of the living.
- You're going to love me.
- I always love you.
- Ooh, do you mind? - Trouble is, I know where they've been.
Jack had sex shortly before he died.
With Billy Radfield.
Billy, we're not here to judge you.
We just want to get to the truth.
We know you had sex with Jack the night he died.
- Your DNA was on the body and on the sheets.
- I just went there to talk, yeah? Jack was high from the gig.
- He'd been drinking.
We both had.
- And you ended up having sex.
Was it consensual? Had it happened before? Yeah.
In college.
Art college.
We just did a year and then sacked it off to concentrate on the band.
Jack was Jack was the one everybody wanted to be mates with, wanted to go out with.
To Jack, it was just another experience.
Just a bit of fun.
Screwed with my head.
I couldn't handle it.
So this time when it happened, it made you angry.
He was back in charge.
- You'd had a drink.
You flipped - No, Jack was never going to change.
He didn't give a shit about anybody except his family.
I was angry with myself.
We had sexthen I left.
I didn't kill him.
Thing is, Billy, we've only got your word for that.
Up until now, that's not proved that reliable.
So what's Matt Ferrer's role in all this? After I left, I went to a bar.
What bar? Er, Deansgate.
I dunno.
I was in a bit of a state.
I just kept on drinking.
Phoned Matt up and told him what happened.
He said I should come over.
- What time? - About 3:30 when I got there.
Why lie? Matt said if I didn't have a decent alibi, you guys would start digging up the dirt.
If it ever got out about me and Jack See, Matt was going to talk to the recording company about me, and maybe the guys in the band, when the time was right.
If they ever got wind of this, then Music is the only thing I've ever been good at.
It's the only thing I've ever wanted to do.
Look, I swear when I left him, he was alive.
We need CCTV from late-licence bars.
Do you want me to bring the manager in? Matt Ferrer? No, he's wasted enough of our time.
We're going to go and talk to Amy, OK? So, erm what would you say was the highlight of your rock'n'roll career? - You taking the piss? - No, I'm serious.
Who would you say you were most like? - I suppose Sting would be the closest.
I told you.
I thought she was in the house.
- I just assumed she'd heard me come in.
- You didn't actually see her? You haven't bombarded her with calls to arrange an alibi? I just wanted somebody to talk to.
He was my life.
I don't care what happens to me.
Why would I lie? I walked down Oxford Road.
There were fire engines.
I got back about half one.
Look, I'mI'm going to have to get back to work.
- OK, I'll get Kat to speak to the fire department.
- Sting? See if there was any engines in Oxford Road that night.
Yeah.
Cool.
OK, I've gotta go.
Cheers, Dave.
Bye.
- How are we doing with the prostitute? - I've left messages for her to call.
I doubt we're on her friends and family list.
Better get round there.
It looks like Billy Radfield could be telling us the truth.
We've got him on CCTV going into a bar on Whitworth Street about 12:37.
Problem is, we haven't got a positive ID of him coming out again.
Coming out! - Yeah, all right, all right.
Grow up.
- Get down there.
Find out what time he left.
- Er, boss? That was the lab.
The particles on Jack's wound match the material the clay head's made of.
Good work.
Hello, mate.
Detective Sergeant Butchers.
Billy Radfield from Rule 7 was in here on Friday night about 12:30.
Did you see him? - No, sorry.
- You sure? Mate, DS Shap.
- Did you see this fella in here on Friday? - Billy Radfield? Yeah, sure.
- You're positive it were Friday? - Yeah.
Sent it to my sister.
She reckons he's cool.
- Right.
2:48am, Saturday morning.
- He were pretty wasted.
Cab picked him up about 15 minutes after that.
- Could you Bluetooth it to me, mate.
- Yeah, sure.
IVF baby.
Probably makes you a bit more neurotic.
- Yeah, he seems dead chuffed, though.
- Yeah.
Although I think he just wants it over now.
If I'm not waking him, getting up to pee or tossing about trying to get comfy, I'm moaning about piles and stretch marks.
- What are you using? - Cocoa butter.
- Liam likes the smell.
- Oh, does he? - Speak of the devil.
It's like a red clay sculpture of a man's head.
Yeah.
Yeah, Jack made it when he was in my class.
I've handled it dozens of times.
Firing it.
Displaying it.
And recently? It's hard to say.
Could have done when I've been round there.
It's hard to remember.
This is a lovely picture.
Yeah, that was Jack.
Both Billy and Jack were in Liam's class, but when they left, - the college didn't renew his contract.
- Ask why.
We need motive.
The way I see it, he stands to lose by Jack's death.
Billy Radfield - are we sure the barman's right? Positive.
The cab company that picked him up confirmed it.
The booking was made in Matt Ferrer's name and Billy went back to his.
So he's in the clear.
Amy? She says she walked back along Oxford Road, past fire engines and arrived home around 1:30.
But the fire brigade didn't take the call till 2:20.
CCTV picked her up at 2:40.
Right, so, she sees him with the bird backstage.
Goes back to the flat to have it out with him.
Snaps.
Or maybe she went to see if the bird was still with him.
Why would she go back to the flat if she knew he was with another girl? I don't know but she's got motive.
She's lying to us.
Get her in.
Oh, come on, love, stop playing silly beggars.
We know you weren't walking home at that time because we've got you on CCTV over an hour later.
Now, where were you? It's all right, Amy.
Justtake your time.
It wasn't half-past when I got there.
It was earlier.
And the music was playing so loud they didn't hear me come in.
It was coming from the bedroom.
My heart was pounding so hard I could hear it in my head.
I thought he was with her.
And I didn't want to but I went up and there and .
.
they were there on the bed.
Jack and Billy.
And I wanted to scream but nothing would come out.
- So what happened then? I just crept back out and went downstairs and waited outside.
I just I wanted to make sure that he'd gone.
That they hadn't spent the night together.
So you saw Billy leave? And I I wanted to go back in.
I wanted to kill him.
But then I thought he'll be angry if I go back up.
So I just I sat there till about two.
And then I walked home.
How pathetic is that! Why didn't you tell the truth before? I was too ashamed.
It's humiliating that your boyfriend sleeps with other women.
Sleeping with men She couldn't admit it.
Cos once she did, she'd have to do something about it.
It was too hard to give up.
- Boss! - Yeah? Sam's in the clear.
According to the prostitute he used, he was there between 1:40 and 4am.
See? That's what you get with young men.
Stamina! Yeah, but if he's in the clear and Billy's got an alibi Right, lab report's come back.
Blue fibres with green lead-based paint particles attached were found on Jack's door frame.
Blue fibres with green lead-based paint particles attached were found on Jack's door frame.
- What about Liam Whittick? - Liam lost his job - because he was favouring certain students.
- Like Jack Taylor.
- Upping the marks.
- So getting him to do the promo is payback.
Still doesn't give him a motive.
And he's got an alibi from his wife.
- Maybe the wife's covering for him.
- No.
I don't think so.
She said he came to bed about one after doing some work.
Yeah, but he could've slipped out again once she was asleep.
No, she'd have noticed.
She's getting up all the time to pee.
No, he took a call from Jack on his mobile.
- So why didn't she hear it.
- Heavy sleeper? No, but you're not when you're pregnant.
She said she's keeping Liam awake.
What about if he goes into another room? The studio or the nursery.
That's when the call comes and she doesn't hear.
Hang on.
Paint particles.
Didn't you say they were decorating? - Yeah, the nursery.
- But it's the old paints that had the lead in it.
No, she's stripping it back to the wood.
So there would be old paint particles.
Right so, he comes home, then he does some work - Maybe she meant decorating work.
- Yeah, maybe.
She falls asleep.
Then he gets the call.
Goes to see Jack.
They argue.
He hits him over the head with the clay - But why would he? - Kill him? I don't knowButchers.
I don't know.
Shall we go and find out? I hope you're sure about this, boss.
RICHARD: Hello? Hello? Liam! Hello? It's Cassie! Oh, God! - I can't feel the baby.
- OK.
Have you called an ambulance? What's going on? - Yeah.
I thought you were them.
- No Yeah, through here.
- Why are the police here? - Can you tell me your name? - Cassie.
How long have you been having your contractions? JANINE: Blue fibres, green lead-based paint.
You were at Jack's flat, Liam.
Breathe slowly.
We need to get her to a hospital now.
Oh, God! No, no.
Leave her now, Liam.
- No, please, don't leave me.
- We'll follow behind in the car.
One, two, three We've got enough evidence.
I just don't understand why.
When I got there, Jack was off his head.
He watched the stuff, said it was crap and that Matt had been right all along: I wasn't up to it.
He was treating it all like it was a big joke.
But he owed me.
He was going to fail his first year at college, so he asked me to help him and I said yes.
Just like that.
They found out, I lost my job and Jack left anyway.
So it was all for nothing.
So what happened that night? We had a row.
I told him how much I needed the job.
He just laughed at me and told me to get out.
I was angry.
I just grabbed the statue lashed out And then I panicked.
I didn't mean to kill him.
Failing at this wasn't an option for me.
Work had dried up.
We were in debt, with the IVF.
This was our third go at it.
Does Cassie know? I couldn't tell her how bad things were and risk losing our child.
What about the Taylors? What about their child? Their grief, their loss.
I never meant to kill him.
I swear.
But you did.
You've destroyed their family.
Now you've destroyed your own.
Please.
Interesting fact.
