Chaos (2011) s01e04 Episode Script

Two Percent

I'm Agent Rick Martinez.
Let me be the first to welcome you to the CIA.
And this is the story of America's great house of spies.
FAY: You've heard of office politics? Ours come with poison pills and guns.
Spy trap.
I knew this was going to be a fiasco.
I've been assigned to a special covert unit, conceived to go where others can't, to do what others won't, whether the mission's authorized or not.
We each have our own special skill, Martinez.
I lead, Billy charms people, Casey hurts people, and you translate.
We are the ODS, last of the old-school spies.
Morning.
Martinez, what would you do if I tried to kill you right now? Excuse me? If I lunged at you with deadly intentions, what would you do? I, uh I really don't know.
Unacceptable answer.
This is the CIA.
You need to know this.
We live in a world where a man has be able to defend his life at a moment's notice using only his wits and whatever lies within reach.
Yeah? Well, what if I came at you right now? What would you do? I'd fling that hot coffee in your eyes, bust that coffee pot across your face, and use the broken glass to sever your jugular.
That's crazy.
No one goes around thinking psychotic ideas like that.
The good ones do.
Really? Really.
Hey, guys, if I tried to kill you - Kick your knees out, - I'd grab those three beat you with that chair, and stick them up through your soft palette, and roll up this newspaper and choke you with it.
- like a catfish.
See? Now sit down, and think of ways to murder me.
What are you two looking at? Appears to be a massive intelligence leak.
Someone intercepted internal communications between HQ and operatives working out of our Hong Kong division.
Then they posted them on line for all the world to see.
Hong Kong? Mm-hmm.
How serious is the leak? Overflowing.
Mission details have been posted, operatives' names are out; station houses-- there is a dark cloud over the pearl of the orient today.
ADELE: Gallstone surgery? Yes.
Director Higgins is having a laparoscopic cholecystectomy as we speak.
Well, how long will he be out of the office? Three to five days.
Poor guy.
Hope he's feeling better.
You realize, Deputy Director, that in a situation like this-- That I assume the role of acting director? Yes, I am aware of the pecking order.
I'll just keep my head down and learn how to forge Higgins' signature.
Clearly you haven't heard.
Is there a problem? A substantial security breach.
Our entire Hong Kong operation is in jeopardy.
We're kind of in crisis.
Because of these leaks, we've had to disengage every mission in the region, and pull every operative back stateside.
We've accounted for all our people except one.
Linda Phillips.
We lost contact with her roughly one hour after the story broke on line.
RICK: Maybe the Chinese have her.
The Chinese would have called if they had her in their custody.
They're gloaty like that.
Where's Higgins, by the way? Uh, gallstones.
So you're The new Higgins.
Lady Higgins.
Phillips was the lead operative of Operation Tea Tree.
They were investigating an al Qaeda money laundering operation.
RICK: So she could be running from terrorists as well as Chinese intelligence.
MICHAEL: If al Qaeda gets ahold of her, she's going to wish she ended up in the hands of the Chinese.
At least they have some respect for diplomatic channels.
We'll go in and get her.
I was stationed in Hong Kong for two and a half years.
I know every rock to turn over.
If anybody can find Operative Phillips, it's me.
Send the ODS.
Operative Malick, that's the most words I've ever heard you say.
I And I agree.
Which is why I called you here.
You're sending us? What's the catch? There is no catch.
I think the ODS would be the best ones for the job.
(aide clearing throat) If I may say, I spend a lot of times at Director Higgins' side, I know the director very well, and I can say with some confidence that he'd be wary of this scheme.
It's not what the director would do.
Well, she just did it.
I like this lady Higgins.
(Chinese pop music playing) Hong Kong-- the food, the technology.
One day they'll finally invent a noodle phone I can eat and I shall die a happy man.
The dead drop point's just ahead.
If Operative Phillips were in trouble and needed to get off the grid she'd know to leave a message there.
MALICK: Anything? MICHAEL: No.
Empty.
We'll have to keep looking.
But where? There are 18,000 people per square mile in this city.
I know where to find her.
Linda keeps a place off the books.
"Linda"? How do you know about this off-the-books place? I spent a lot of time there.
We had a relationship-- years ago.
And you're just choosing to tell us this now? I didn't think it was vital to this mission.
Now it clearly is.
So maybe you don't think it's vital to this mission, but as you well know, sharing is vital to our partnership.
We worked together, and then it grew into more.
There's no story here.
RICK: Ah, spoken like a man with a story.
I'm glad you guys are enjoying yourselves, but we're burning daylight.
- So this was your love nest? - For a time.
- And then? - Then it turned into a hornet's nest.
- Can we can the Q&A session? - I'm not asking you these questions just for the sake of making you uncomfortable.
I am.
MICHAEL: We have every right to know what we're walking into here.
Yeah.
Will there be hugging, fighting? Does she hate you now? Look, we were together for two years and three months.
It was an intense connection, and then it wasn't.
Bottom line-- she and I are both professionals and we will act as such, all right? She is definitely still living here.
I can smell the scented candles through the door.
Balsam and cedar.
(speaking Chinese) (speaking Chinese) (groans) (speaking Chinese) Casey? Hi, Linda.
Get off of him.
You okay? What are you doing here? The agency sent us to get you out of Hong Kong.
Well, they shouldn't have.
'Cause I'm not going anywhere.
So why didn't you leave a message at the dead drop? Because when the leak hit, I knew that HQ would recall everybody from Hong Kong.
But that's not happening to me.
I'm too close to quit.
Too close to what? To finally getting Kwan.
Who's that? Some might say a figment of the imagination.
A boogeyman, if you will.
That thing that goes bump in the night.
He's a man-- a flesh and blood man, who finances terrorist organizations all over the world.
Extremely elusive.
Up until now, the man has been a phantom.
Nobody even knows what he looks like.
But tomorrow night, we will.
Last month I tagged some cash, went shopping for handbags-- the traceable money ended up in the hands of an al Qaeda cell in Jakarta.
And you tracked it back to one of these companies that makes knock-off bags.
It was Kwan's company, I'm sure of it.
And if I drop out now, Kwan will just disappear.
And money will keep pouring into al Qaeda.
So if you think you're going to take me back to the States because of CIA politics, you'll need pepper spray and some duct tape.
Spirited lady.
I can see why he went for you.
I think your boyfriend needs to be running along, Linda.
LINDA: His name is Joseph Chang.
He's my asset here.
MICHAEL: Suppose we were open to staying on.
How do you plan to complete the mission? I work in the export business.
I know the factory where the knock-offs are manufactured.
This is where Kwan will meet with his backers tomorrow night.
You see, Swan is looking to expand his operation.
And a move like that requires a face-to-face with his backers.
So we sneak in, we record Kwan in the act, and then we turn him over to the Chinese authorities.
I'd better go.
Really, Linda? Cavorting between the sheets with your asset? It's funny-- I remember cavorting with a certain operative every night for two years.
But you didn't seem to mind me bending the rules back then.
Must be such a burden being the arbiter of sexual protocol.
Excuse me.
Every night for two years? (whistles) Why are you doing this? You have Operative Phillips.
Your mission is complete.
But her mission isn't.
Those cables were leaked on purpose by Kwan because he knew she was getting too close.
I'm telling you we have this guy on the ropes.
I only sent you there to look for one operative.
And we can bring you that operative plus a major money smuggler and terror financier.
I'd say that's a hell of a return on your investment.
Okay, fine.
Do it.
(clears throat) Yes? Director Higgins is still recovering, but perhaps we should apprise him of your actions in his absence.
Perhaps.
But I have something else I need you to do for me.
Go into my office.
In my desk in the top right-hand drawer, you'll find an object.
Um, it's a little rubber stress reliever.
You know, the kind of toys where if you squeeze it, they eyes pop out? I want you to squeeze it about a thousand times until you chill the hell out.
(guns cocking) Guessing these aren't the neighbors.
I'm Colonel Kai Wei with the Special Police.
Hello, Colonel.
We can identify ourselves.
We know who you are: four spies who came to rescue one of your own.
I've been instructed by my superiors to take you to the airport, put you on a flight to the United States.
And I will stay there until the plane takes off.
(speaks Chinese) I'm sorry, Colonel, (speaks Chinese) I just have to ask.
As a matter of professional courtesy, tell me something, how did you know we were coming? Because American intelligence is loud and slow-moving like an ox.
There isn't an ox among us.
We're very good at what we do.
Perhaps, but I am better.
(speaks Chinese) An ox.
I, for one, am not an ox.
The ODS are not oxen.
Of course we aren't, Billy.
They didn't follow us from the airport.
He's just hiding his method.
I can respect that.
Who cares about his methods or what names he calls us? We need to do something.
Relax, it's covered.
Covered? They're taking us to the airport.
All right, I know we've all met, but maybe a more formal introduction would help explain the situation.
This is Michael Dorset, team leader.
The gentlemen to your right is Billy Collins.
He's a jack- of-all-trades.
Master of some.
This is Rick Martinez.
He speaks more languages than there are stars in the sky.
Together we form the ODS.
Do you know what the D stands for in ODS? No.
"Disruptive.
" (yells) (tires screech) (tires screech) Let's go! (Linda coughing) BILLY: I think we just used up our one free pass.
The Chinese find us again, we'll be getting a VIP tour of their firing squad facilities.
The challenge now is setting up surveillance without a single piece of equipment, including our cell phones.
It's covered.
MAN: Look who's here! Gentlemen, meet Mr.
Lee, the first asset I made in Hong Kong.
Mr.
Casey, you're so fat now.
Why, thank you.
We'd like to do some shopping.
Absolutely.
What are you in need of? Do you have any adult toys? (shutter clicks) Camera.
That's amazing.
But we need video surveillance, Mr.
Lee.
Here they are.
Okay.
Are there any other brands besides Smile Happy Fun Bear? It's all they have, but these phones are perfect.
Perfect? My niece has this phone.
Beggars can't be choosers, Martinez.
Besides, it's not the outside of the phone that matters.
It's what's on the inside.
You brought your own SIM cards.
I always carry a few spares.
Agency hardware, encrypted and untraceable.
There you go, Happy Fun Bear.
Remote control.
Surveillance camera inside.
I always wanted one of those.
Anything that can be attached to a wall? Surveillance camera.
You watch on this.
Perfect.
Got phones.
Thanks, Mr.
Lee.
My pleasure.
How good to see you two still together after all these years.
You have a very strong love.
Yeah, okay.
Aw, that's adorable.
LINDA: This is Kwan's factory.
Are we good to go? I paid the watchman.
He's taking a little longer to make his rounds.
Still, we don't have much time.
All right, we'll plant the gear.
You stay out here and watch the door.
CHANG: What do I do if someone comes? You open the door and say, "Someone's coming.
" You got me? No, nothing yet.
I got you now, Billy.
You think this will be enough to nail this guy? The only thing that seems to get China to act is the threat of embarrassment.
I mean, we can talk about Kwan all day long, but they'll simply deny any wrongdoing within their borders.
Having them conduct business on camera will force the government to take action.
Uh, guys, we have a problem.
What do you mean? Where's Chang? Oh, he's still out there.
He's leading Kwan's men right towards us.
Is it just me or is there a faint whiff of setup wafting about the room? Martinez kill those lights so we can level the playing field.
(quietly): No, no, hold on a second.
Okay.
(plastic popping) (grunting) (pops) (plastic popping) Nice improvising.
All right, come on.
Let's get out of here.
(popping continues) LINDA (sighs): It's not possible.
That your boyfriend led us into a trap? Love is blind.
I was crazy about this girl in Scotland that turned out to be a pyromaniac.
And I just could not see it until she burned down my apartment one day.
I wasn't in love.
He was an asset.
And I slept with him, okay? I just don't know how they got to him.
They must have, I don't know, threatened him or leveraged him somehow.
(groans) Oh, look, what a surprise.
Linda's asset stole our car.
Well, one thing the world's got a lot of is cars.
Let's go find us one.
LoJack has placed your rental car at Kwai Tsing Road near the old ferry building.
Moving? No, stationary.
All right, we're on our way.
Uh, I'm obviously missing something.
Why are you tracking down a car? Because Joseph Chang stole it.
And right now he's our only lead.
Just hope we find him before the Chinese police arrest us again.
Wait.
Arrest you again? Don't worry about it.
We got away.
We'll call you once we find the car.
(dial tone) Dorset? (dial tone stops) (sighs) There's our car.
Chang must have abandoned it.
You know, after driving this fine piece of engineering, I'm actually a little disappointed we found it.
Martinez, check the trunk.
See if he left our gear.
Well, anything? Uh, I don't know.
You don't know? There's a body in the way.
Linda? I'm okay.
He followed Kwan's orders, led us right into an ambush, but apparently he was still a loose end.
Let's hope he was well paid, 'cause the severance package leaves a lot to be desired.
You sure you're okay? Yeah.
Yeah, I'm fine.
Good.
Check his pockets.
What? Why me? Normally, we've have the new guy do it.
But this is your mission, and you've already been intimate with him.
True, but he was alive then.
Fine.
Some cash, some gum, and uh what do you think? Elevator key.
It's a start.
MICHAEL: All right, guys, we've got ourselves a lead.
Sure, it's dead and stuffed in the trunk of a car, but it's a lead nonetheless.
If we find the shooter, we might find Kwon.
All right, what else do we have? Not a lot of blood.
He was probably killed somewhere else and then driven here.
Second that.
Driver's seat was pushed all the way back.
Someone much taller than our man was driving.
Maybe the car could tell us where he was killed.
- What? - Send the VIN to Fay, she could run a back trace on the GPS unit, and that should be able to tell us where the car stopped before it wound up here.
Wow.
According to Fay, this is the only place the car stopped after Chang stole it.
Did you know he had this place? No.
BILLY: In here.
So, now we know where he was murdered.
CASEY: He certainly didn't make it easy for them.
Looks like a last stand.
Everybody pick a room.
Let's start digging.
I'm an idiot.
I keep going over everything in my head.
Where were the signs that he was working me? What did I miss? And? And I don't see a thing.
How did I not see that coming? It's what we do, Linda.
We lie.
And you're not an idiot.
Happens to the best of us.
Remember that time in Macao? I went to meet with that informant-- what was his name? Ju-long.
Ju-long.
We thought he was going to give us the key to the Golden Triangle.
Instead, he stabbed me in the ribs.
I though you were going to drown in your own blood.
You hit him with that delivery truck.
I winged him.
You broke both his legs.
- Yeah-- that got him talking.
- It did.
(laughing) Why did you leave, Casey? Oh, Linda.
That was a long time ago.
There's not a statute of limitations on the question.
We drifted apart.
That's not the way I remember it.
I stayed still.
You drifted away.
All the way back to the States.
I'm going to go downstairs, see if they need some help.
This looks promising! Mike let's take a peek inside, shall we? No, no, no, let me.
Excuse me? Pick the lock; I've been practicing.
Now is not the time to start honing your skills, Martinez.
How am I supposed to learn if you never give me a chance? Okay.
Little walking-around money.
Type 77B.
Armor-piercing ammo.
Sweet.
This is standard issue for the Chinese Intelligence Service.
As is this.
That's why we've never been able to get the drop on Kwon.
(Linda sighs) He had Chang working from inside Chinese Intelligence all along.
We need to lay low while Fay runs a full background on Chang.
(sirens wail, brakes screech) They must've found Chang's body.
There's got to be a way out back.
All right, we're going to need to move, or they'll have it covered.
I'm turning myself in.
That's not happening.
I'll go out there, I'll give myself over, it'll give you a chance to slip out.
We need to stick together, Linda.
Listen, they'll make me do the walk of shame and then they'll deport me, but in the meantime, they'll be forced to listen to what I have to say.
They'll have to investigate.
You know it's the best plan.
All right, I'm going with her.
CASEY: I'm not letting her go alone.
- Go.
Out this way.
You wanted to show me something? I was thinking about what you said before, about the Chinese not reporting that they arrested the ODS.
It is weird.
It should be all over their comm traffic.
So I've been going over everything that we that we pulled in from Hong Kong in the last 24 hours, and I got this back from Support Services.
The ODS managed to set up several surveillance cameras in the factory before they were ambushed.
Whoever attacked them found all the cameras except this one.
ADELE: Well, he's certainly acting like the boss.
And if in fact the factory does belong to Kwan then we may finally have a picture of our mystery man.
Can you get his face? I'm looking.
Dorset.
ADELE: The remaining surveillance camera you put up in the factory captured an image of a man we believe to be Kwan.
We're sending it to you now.
Okay.
Sending a picture of Kwan.
Okay, got it.
What? What is it? Meet the curious Mr.
Kwan.
Colonel Kai Wei.
They're one and the same.
And now he has Casey and Linda.
I have confidence there are no gas canisters handy.
But I prefer to be safe.
Officer Kai Wei, we were on our way to turning ourselves in when you found us.
We have knowledge that a member of your force was involved with terrorism.
He was also working for a man named Kwan.
Kwan? We can discuss fairy tales later.
But I have another problem at the moment.
I was ordered to quietly take you to the airport.
But you have prevented me from carrying out my orders.
It is important to understand our culture.
Losing face.
Saving face.
Giving face.
Honor, duty-- that is everything.
I assume this has something to do with why you don't have us in a government facility? Every building in China is a government facility.
But this one is simply unofficial.
Now if I were to take the two of you to my superiors, that would be quite humiliating.
So the only way that I could restore my professional honor as a servant of my country is to send you back to the United States as I was originally ordered.
All of you.
So, please, call your other three partners; tell them to come here and turn themselves in.
Can you give us a minute? I will give you two.
You can't possibly be thinking of bringing your team in here.
I don't have to think about it, I'm calling the ODS in.
Why? You see that guard out there, with the shiner? I did that.
Last night at the factory.
I heard the socket crack.
But the men at the factory were Kwan's.
And so are these men, at this "unofficial government facility.
" Because that man is Kwan.
Here comes your phantom.
CASEY: Hey, Michael.
It's Case.
Where are you? I'm here with our colleague from Chinese Intelligence, Colonel Kai Wei.
MICHAEL: Everything all right? - Everything's great.
We've been having a very civilized chat, and the colonel has convinced me that this little pickle we've gotten ourselves into is going to be best resolved through diplomatic channels.
You think that's safe? The colonel has assured me that we're going to be treated fairly, so long as you guys just turn yourselves in.
If you think that's best.
CASEY: I do, Michael.
You know me.
I hate confrontation.
CASEY: I always know when it's best to just throw in the towel and walk away.
Live to fight another day, right? CASEY: That is my philosophy.
So, I'm going to have the Colonel send you the address on your phone.
MICHAEL: Great.
(speaking Chinese) Now that was a gripping performance by one Casey Malick.
RICK: The human weapon throwing in the towel.
He must have found out that Kai Wei's really Kwan.
He was warning us.
(phone chimes) Okay, got the address; let's go get 'em.
Mr.
Lee, we're going to need some more toys.
(knock at door) Higgins' aide wasn't at his desk.
He went home sick.
He's probably at the hospital right now, reporting to Higgins on how my tenure is bringing down the CIA.
Might not be far off.
But I stand by my decision to send them.
Sometimes we have to put ourselves on the line, and let the chips fall where they may.
That's not a sentiment I hear expressed in this office very often.
You never should have come.
You're right.
It was a stupid move.
Precisely why we were bad together.
Excuse me? You wanted to know why I left.
When I'm with you, Linda, I make bad decisions; I'm off.
Not by much-- two percent maybe, but when you're a human weapon, two percent can mean the difference between being the victor or being the vanquished.
All right, when the ODS gets here, things are going to happen fast, so we need to be ready.
The minute things start to go sideways, those guards are going to come in here and put two bullets in us.
I need to say something.
What? I loved you, Casey.
And back when we were together, I don't regret a moment of it.
I never told you that I loved you, but I did.
I loved you, Casey.
Okay.
Okay?! Don't try to manipulate me.
Linda, I know what you're doing-- using this stressful situation to try and pull words out of my mouth.
You said yourself that we're probably not going to walk out of here, and all I was trying to do is express something that I have been sitting on for a long, long time.
Okay.
Now you have taken me down by five percent.
And I really need to focus all of my being on the destruction that is about to rain down on this place.
You're never going to change, are you? You're just going to be sealed up, like a vault, until you die.
Which should be in the next five minutes.
You're missing the point.
This isn't about whether I say those words or not.
We are not going to die.
Because the ODS is about to drop hell on these people-- the likes of which they have never seen.
The cavalry is on the way.
(helicopter whirring) You have a teeny-tiny cavalry.
So there are two guards covering the front door.
Uh-huh.
And one by each window.
They see us.
Try and keep the guards distracted.
- Casey needs time to break out.
- Roger that.
(gunfire continues) All right, snookums, this is it.
(gunfire continues in distance) (yells) You're welcome.
Eight hours after the ODS rescued operatives Phillips and Malick Colonel Kai Wei-slash- terror financier Kwan, was found hiding on a ship destined for Jakarta.
Based on our surveillance footage, along with evidence gathered by Operative Phillips, the Chinese are acting swiftly to see that Kwan will face justice.
Our security breach has been sealed, along with the flow of money to terrorism.
Well, this is quite a victory for you.
It's a victory for the agency.
I just wanted you to be the first to hear it.
And-and why is that? I know you've had concerns regarding my decision to send the ODS to Hong Kong.
- I see.
- And I know how vigilant you've been in apprising Director Higgins of my every move.
So I just wanted you to have the vital intel before you scurry off and report to him.
So scurry away.
(knocking on door) Looks good on you.
Oh.
The desk.
Well, I better not get too used to it.
Director Higgins is back tomorrow.
Ah.
Well, you must be relieved.
Running the ODS is a stressful gig.
Wouldn't want you losing your hair over it.
Well I kind of enjoyed holding your leash.
Really? In fact, I've been thinking it might be a challenge I'd like to take on full-time.
I thought your stint at the CIA was just a political stepping stone.
Well, plans change.
Well, I wouldn't start measuring for drapes quite just yet.
I don't think Higgins has any plans to retire.
We'll see.
Oh, are we still on for dinner tonight? Absolutely.
You know, I better squeeze it in before you become my boss.
I am your boss.
I meant my main boss.
Oh, by the way, as acting director, I was privy to your Hong Kong expense reports.
Yeah? And I was wondering if you'd care to explain $77,000 for adult toys? Hey.
I've been reassigned to Lisbon.
Before I head out, I just wanted to thank you all for your help, and perhaps have a word with you? Go ahead.
Okay.
We can do this here.
I just wanted to thank you for saying that you love me.
I never said that.
Oh, but you did.
Back in Hong Kong.
You said you needed to be at 100% to do your work effectively.
But that when you were around me, you were only at 98%.
- And you couldn't risk being off by even 2%.
.
- Linda that is true regardless of the cause.
But I reject your inference.
You did love me.
You said as much.
Numbers don't lie, Casey.
For a guy like you, that two percent is love.
Good-bye, Casey.
Good-bye, Operative Phillips.
Can you believe I'm getting a bit dewy.
MICHAEL: Don't.
If you cry, I just may lose it, too.
For the record, she misrepresented many of my statements.
I don't know Can't argue with math.
