Chaos (2011) s01e09 Episode Script

Defending Sofia

I'm Agent Rick Martinez Let me be the first to welcome you to the CIA.
And this is the story of America's great house of spies.
You've heard of office politics? Ours come with poison pills and guns.
Spy trap.
I knew this was going to be a fiasco.
I've been assigned to a special covert unit, conceived to go where others can't, and to do what others won't, whether the mission's authorized or not.
We each have our own special skills, Martinez.
I lead, Billy charms people, Casey hurts people, and you translate.
We are the ODS, last of the old-school spies.
Martinez, let's go.
Conference room.
Uh, okay.
Just, uh, just a couple of seconds.
We don't have a couple of seconds.
Higgins wants us there now.
What's going on? We just got this video from one of our surveillance birds.
Downlinked 17 minutes ago.
Where are we? Zanacer, Rukovia.
What did we just see? An assassination.
Sophia Vukola was in that car.
She and six of her campaign aides were killed.
Well, the election is tomorrow.
It's not like we didn't think something like this - might happen.
- We anticipated it.
We just couldn't stop it.
I met her once, you know.
Two years ago, New York, at a fund-raiser.
She was raising money for flood relief in her homeland, while her government was standing by, doing nothing.
Stood in line with 200 others for a handshake.
Ten seconds, "Hello.
How you doing?" But in those ten seconds, she didn't make you feel foolish for being optimistic about the world.
The ODS will be going in undercover.
Government troops have had the country under lockdown since the assassination-- no foreigners in or out.
So you'll be posing as independent election monitors.
They're going ahead with the election? President Coslovic needs to keep up appearances.
There'd be an international outcry if he called them off now.
Which is ironic, considering that Coslovic is probably behind the assassination.
What are we going in to do exactly? Good question.
Seems a little after the fact.
Six other people were killed in the blast, including Miss Vukola's communications director.
We need his phone.
Oh, so you're sending your best field team to pick up a dead man's phone.
That dead man happened to work for us.
He was carrying an encrypted CIA cell phone.
Which, in the event that it survived the explosion intact, puts the CIA at the scene of a political assassination.
A rather incriminating scenario, that makes it appear that we may have had something to do with the bombing.
When do we leave? We, election monitors, are midwives to democracy.
And not unlike an actual birth, it can be a messy, bloody and frankly unpleasant business.
This radio is your lifeline, people.
Keep it on you at all times.
Once the polls open, things can get crazy out there.
You get into trouble, you call me.
Got it? The only thing we're missing is a backpack and a Eurail pass.
Heads in the game, boys.
Nothing like a political assassination to put the locals on edge.
Anything you'd care to share with the troops, gentlemen? Only our enthusiasm for helping to ensure a free and fair election.
I've been doing this a long time.
Kosovo, Sudan, East Timor.
I've seen too many elections stolen, the will of the people subverted by corrupt governments, including our own.
That is just shocking.
When you step into that polling place tomorrow, it doesn't matter if it's a school or a community center, or an old pierogi factory; you need to think of it as a church.
A cathedral of liberty.
People coming together to worship at the holy altar of democracy.
Can you do that, son? Uh, yes, yes.
Absolutely.
This is not just a job, people.
This is a sacred duty.
Hence my earlier church metaphor.
You've all got your room assignments.
Let's hit those racks early.
Polls open at 6:00 a.
m.
tomorrow.
Let's rock the vote! HQ confirmed that.
Sophia's body is being held here.
They should have a room where they keep all the personal effects.
Billy and I will convince the clerk to give us access.
We'll come get you two, once we're in.
But why you two? Because we're smooth.
Well, who says? Casey and I could be smooth.
Actually, no.
You're a gentleman and a delight, but you're still far too new at this game to be considered smooth.
He Call me if you want the clerk forcibly restrained.
is that.
I could be smooth.
Yes.
Good, good.
Um We lost someone very close to us today, George Shastovich.
And we'd like to retrieve some of his personal belongings.
Are you family? Brothers.
Half.
Look, our friend was here on business, okay? He was He was there when Sophia was If you must know, we need his cell phone.
$500.
U.
S.
First door to the right.
We're in.
I just don't see why I had to be the one in the photos.
I don't like the judgment in your voice.
No judgment.
But you saw what poor old George looked like.
I mean, I like to think I could have done better, that's all.
Here we go.
Hold up.
Something's happening.
They're coming back.
They say they're looking for someone.
They wouldn't know we're here.
All right, they're taking a body.
The clerk is not handling it well.
This is the worst-run morgue in history.
Bribery, grave-robbery I have a good mind to write a letter to the supervisor.
Again, worst morgue ever.
The body they stole, it was her.
It was Sophia Vukola.
They must be getting rid of the evidence.
And witnesses.
Uh, that's one theory.
And the other theory? Well, Sophia was known to use decoys; body doubles.
You think he killed the body double? Now, if I'm wondering if that's a decoy, so are they.
Meaning Meaning the government thinks she's still alive.
And you know what? So do I.
Right after they stole the body and tried to cover their tracks, we realized it was most likely a body double.
It was a long shot, but we decided to go back into the personal effects room, where we found the last piece of evidence we could get our hands on-- the purse that supposedly belonged to Sophia Vukola.
"Supposedly," because you don't believe she's dead? If you had seen what we did, you wouldn't believe it either.
My analyst is still going over the photos, but she's already found inconsistencies among the items from the purse.
All right, Operative Dorset, let's chase your theory down.
I want you to speak to members of Vukola's inner circle.
See what they know.
We're going to send a list of names to your phone right now.
Talk to them all.
Split it up if you have to, but you need to move fast.
The government is chasing the same theory you are.
All right.
I need to sell this dead body theory to the DCI, so what do we have? Don't worry, sir, the evidence we have is extremely solid.
Lipstick.
Lipstick.
Sophia Vukola wore a very specific shade of lipstick: Ladybug Red.
The tube found in her purse was Ruby Slipper.
So this entire operation hinges on cosmetics.
Hardly.
Miss Green isn't just an analyst.
She's our best profiler.
Well, I know Sophia Vukola like I know my kitchen cabinets.
Five foot eight.
122 pounds.
Single.
Dog person.
Suits by Galliano, but she has two Armanis for special occasions.
Underwear by Calvin Klein.
Her favorite shade of eye shadow is copper, and her only shade of lipstick is Ladybug Red.
You're not convinced.
Okay.
Contact solution is wrong.
It's for soft lenses; Sophia wears hard.
There's gum in the bag.
She never chews it.
Then there's the purse; the label says Prada, but it's a knockoff.
It's not her style.
Do you want me to go on? It's all very impressive, but if I'm gonna persuade the head of this agency to maintain this operation, I'm gonna have to have more than chewing gum and lipstick.
Excuse me.
While you're with him, you might want to suggest that he change antiperspirants.
Excuse me? That's his file.
He wears Lady Sportstick, and it doesn't work.
You profiled the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency? Just for giggles.
But it should serve as a voucher for my skills.
Well this can't hurt.
Jovan Kesman? Da? We're friends of Sophia Vukola.
I've never seen any of you before.
We're with the CIA.
Jovan, Sophia's alive.
And being one of her closest advisers, you know that's true, but we need your help to keep it that way.
The woman who died in the blast was one of her doubles, wasn't it? It is common practice in a country like this to use decoys.
Do you know where she is? It doesn't matter one way or the other.
They will find her, kill her, finish the job.
Well, then tell us where she is so that we can protect her.
How? The army is watching all the roads.
I know, but you're just gonna need to trust us on this one, Jovan.
I don't want to run away, but I can't be here for her now.
You understand that, don't you? I can't.
I have a wife, two small children.
Then do it for them.
Where's Sophia hiding? When Sophia began her campaign, we all used to believe in the miracle that she could change this country.
Now it looks like it will take just such a miracle to get her out safely.
That's why we're here.
All right, we're heading into the lion's den here.
The men inside that room have every reason to believe we're the enemy.
Our only objective is to make them trust us.
Which should be easy.
And remember, keep your hands out of your pockets, eyes forward and no sudden movements.
What the heck is this? Psychology.
Studies of the adaptive unconscious say that human beings make decisions in the first two seconds of any given situation.
These flowers are meant to disarm, confuse, obfuscate.
Hopefully, they'll gain us an extra five seconds, maybe six.
Who are we to argue with psychology? What about your plan?! Psychology is an art, not a science.
Hold your fire! We're here to help! We know about Sophia! We can get her to safety! Come inside.
How did you know? It wasn't that difficult.
And it's only a matter of time before your opposition knows, too.
We can help you, but that means coming with us.
She's safe, relatively speaking.
I'm giving her government about an hour before they discover the body they have isn't hers.
Good work.
Now your top priority is getting her to the U.
S.
consulate.
After the election when things have died down, we can get her evacuated.
That's not gonna be so easy.
The consulate's about five kilometers away and the military's locking this place down tight.
Well, do it as soon as safety permits.
Irony is, according to the preliminary polls, Sophia Vukola is way ahead of her opponent.
Even dead, she's gonna win this in a landslide.
We don't have these Old World proletarian men's clubs back home.
Other than the totalitarianism and the rampant human rights abuses, I'm a little envious of your people.
Except for the corporate imperialism and the cultural arrogance, I'm a little envious of yours.
Your life is in danger.
You need to let us protect you.
Many lives are in danger.
Yesterday, a brave woman died because an assassin thought she was me.
For her sake, I cannot be afraid.
That's an admirable sentiment, ma'am, but the CIA can offer you real protection.
And where has the CIA been during 20 years of my people's oppression? You're here to protect me because now, for some reason, it's politically expedient to do so.
Well, forgive me if I put my faith into those who have not been fair-weather friends.
I understand.
These men would lay down there lives for you, and they will lay down their lives if you stay here.
They're 11 guys with a couple of shotguns.
The government has tanks, and they will find you.
They will find you and they will kill you, all of you.
All right.
For their sake, I will go.
Good choice.
Just to be clear, there really wasn't a choice because if you had said no, we were going to kidnap you.
I hope you don't find that too culturally arrogant.
A little, but I let it slide.
What did you say to them? That your incompetence will get you killed if I didn't accompany you.
That's a fair point.
It looks like they have the embassy guarded.
So close, yet so far.
So much for getting a jump on the competition.
The government must have figured out that you were alive.
Apparently, they decided not to wait for the DNA results.
A penny for you thoughts, gents.
Team Six, Team Six, come in.
Are you jokers there? Yes, Warren, Team Six here.
What's up? What's up? Oh, just hanging out, manning your polling van.
Where the hell are you? We got caught up in the city.
We'll get there as soon as we can.
Oh, sure, I can understand that.
the cafes, the bistros, and hey, make sure you try some of the pastries.
They're famous for 'em.
Well, get your asses in gear.
The whole world is watching what we do here today.
Right, the whole world.
Warren, I gotta go.
Oh, I do so love that look.
What's your status? Screwed, but I have a plan, All right, let's hear it.
Tell the world.
Come again? We spread the word that she's alive and all eyes will be directed here to Rukovia.
It'll make it a lot tougher for the government to put a bullet in her.
The Agency needs to issue a statement.
Michael, do you have any kind of access to a video camera there? Cell phone.
It's crude, but it'll work.
Then have her make an appeal directly to the people.
Trust me.
To see Sophia Vukola speak the words directly will have far more impact than any statement issued by a government agency.
So what are we doing? We know that you're alive.
Obviously, now your opponent does, too.
So it's only fair that we bring the rest of the world in on our little secret.
How do you plan to do that? We're gonna film you making a statement, and send it back to our people in the States.
They'll make it public.
Once the international community knows you're alive and in hiding, it'll make it a lot harder for the government to make you disappear.
I'm all for making things harder for the government.
Where would you like me to stand? Follow me.
Thank you.
Come with me.
Thank you.
Now if I could just put you there.
Perfect.
Here? How does it look? Gorgeo.
And yet very presidential.
Are you ready? Mm-hmm.
To all nations of the world, this is Sophia Vukola.
It is election day in my country, and I am alive.
This is turbulent time in our nation's history.
But great change often does not come without turmoil.
We, more than most people, understand that, and we embrace it.
What choice do we have? We will not be daunted.
We will not be intimidated.
Your voices cannot be silenced.
They will rise in a chorus, crying out for freedom we have been so long denied.
And the world will listen.
Thank you.
That's it.
The whole world knows.
Good job, Operative Dorset.
So how did she come across? Like a future president.
Is your current pos enough to maintain? Higgins? Higgins, can you hear me? What happened? Well, the government must have shut down the phone lines.
I'm surprised it took them this long.
Well, how did my little film go down, huh? I imagine the likes of Boyle and Scorsese are quaking in their boots.
Cell reception's gone.
Is it? Don't you just love tyrannical regimes? They are such a predictable bunch.
The first sign of trouble, and they shut down communications.
It's a good sign.
They're afraid of you.
They shouldn't be afraid of me.
They should be afraid of the will of the people.
The lesson I believe King George learned from your people a few hundred years ago.
You're up on your imperialist history.
Well, between undergrad and the Kennedy School, I drank my way through half the bars in Boston.
The revolutionary spirit must have rubbed off.
I even became a Patriots fan.
Go, Pats.
You're wrong on two counts.
First, the Redskins rule.
Oh, God And second, your government is absolutely right to be scared witless by you because the people are intending to vote for you alive, dead or somewhere in between.
We just need to keep you safe until the end of the election and you'll be president.
Trust us.
All right, then I should go and vote, shouldn't I? I understand your feelings, but a symbolic gesture at this point would be foolish and unnecessary.
But there is nothing symbolic about it.
I literally have to vote.
There's a bylaw in the constitution that to be sworn in as a president, I'm required to cast a vote in my home district.
We need to go there.
I hear you, but it's not a good idea.
Why not? Because we don't want a repeat of what happened to your decoy.
Oh There's no way to assure your safety, ma'am.
Our first order of business is to keep you alive.
You can come back to fight another day.
Another day? This is my day! My people's day! I'm going to vote.
I mean, if you don't want to take me, I'll walk.
I can walk.
Sophia, Sophia Please, please.
Sophia, we cannot let you do that.
It is not safe.
Okay, then you'll have to knock me out and tie me up.
And you'll probably like that.
If I don't vote out of fear, then the same tyrant will stay in power and people of my country will suffer.
All right, all right, we'll take you.
The government has shut down all Internet and cell phone communication.
We're completely cut off from the ODS.
I need options.
How are we going to reestablish contact? The Air Force has an airborne broadcast center.
A revamped cargo plane that basically works like a flying cell phone tower.
We could send it over the last known location of the ODS.
Of course, that would require invading sovereign airspace and could incite an international incident.
Next? The Romanian authorities have given us permission to set up a mobile cell tower at the border.
Now, it will have limited range, but if we crank it, we could pick up a signal from the ODS team, theoretically.
Let's start there.
Hopefully, the operatives are holed up somewhere safe and are staying out of trouble.
I don't want to get any further up that creek than we have to.
All quiet.
Yeah, they're too smart to put a tank in front of the polling place.
If they're planning on stopping you from voting, they'll be more subtle.
Maybe they're not expecting me to vote.
Maybe they think I'll flee the country.
Well, that would be logical because, as we pointed out, this is a colossally stupid move.
Oh Maybe a member of the election monitoring group needs to pay a visit, hmm? You know, make sure the process isn't being compromised or hindered in any way.
Good idea.
Take Martinez with you.
But if anything looks off, get the hell out of there.
Looks good.
Mm-hmm.
Good afternoon.
Hello.
We were just wondering if everything was running smoothly here today.
Yes, we are fine.
Has anyone tried to interfere with the voters? Intimidate anyone in any way? Everything is good.
We already spoke to your colleagues.
Colleagues? Oh, of course.
Wonderful.
Well, seems like everything's under control here, so we'll leave you go about your business, and happy voting.
Thank you.
Let's move, Martinez.
Now what? Don't look back.
Slow down just a hair.
They closer? Yep.
Fantastic.
Now I need you to do one more thing for me.
What's that? Duck.
What are you doing? Tampering with a fire extinguisher is serious business, Martinez.
We need to find another polling station.
I can't just walk into any polling station in the city.
I'm registered here.
I have to vote in my precinct.
Well, maybe this year you vote absentee.
Oh, please.
What did they say about Mohammed and the mountain? If we can't get you to the polling station, then maybe we could bring one to you.
Warren.
He was working the mobile polling units.
Come in, Warren.
This is, uh, Team Six.
Where the hell are you right now? It's about time you guys got here.
What the hell are you doing? Taking this truck.
Oh, sure go ahead, take a little joyride.
Just bring it back with a full tank of gas.
Keys? What the hell? You're serious.
Don't have time to get into it right now, but that woman really needs to vote.
Oh, my bad.
I mean, forget the people who walked miles to get here.
They'll be cool with it.
All those old men, the women lugging babies on their backs, slogging through cow pastures for hours to exercise their rights.
They'll understand that you're carjacking their destiny because this woman needs to vote.
I'm grateful for what you're doing to help my people, but it is crucial that I cast my ballot or their votes will have been wasted.
She's? Mm-hmm.
You're her.
Well, you guys can't be with her.
It's against the rules for any member of the monitoring team to have contact with a candidate or a member of the candidate's staff.
It could be seen as a conflict.
Good job we're not violating any major rules then.
We're actually not election monitors.
CIA.
CIA? The organization responsible for undermining more elections than any group in history? That's us, Warren.
Listen, you know what's going on here.
The people of this country are poised for change and they are gonna sweep this woman into office despite the current government doing everything they can to destroy her.
But for that to happen, she has to vote.
Thank you.
We may be the CIA, but we're on the right side this time.
Come on.
I tell you, this is a crazy day.
And that's coming from a man who once acted as a human shield for a troupe of Guatemalan acrobats so they could vote.
Wow, Sophia Vukola.
May I gush? It's all right.
I just feel like I have need to say this: you are a beacon of freedom, Miss.
Do you know that? CIA-backed or no.
And you're casting a vote in my polling van.
In my van! Amazing.
Are we sure that it is legitimate? This needs to be airtight.
The government can't have any basis to throw out the results.
As long as this great lady casts her ballot in the proper district, it's indisputable.
I'll certify it myself.
They can't touch it.
This is history.
We're a part of history.
I guess the cell phones are working.
Dorset.
We have an extraction team prepped.
Can you be at the Romanian border within four hours? Shouldn't be a problem.
We have to make a little detour first.
A detour? You were supposed to be laying low, waiting for orders.
Yes, but circumstances have changed.
It's become clear that Miss Vukola needs to cast a vote in order to be elected.
Ergo, detour.
Have you lost your mind? I have been moving mountains to protect Miss Vukola, and to save your collective hides.
Every time you play cowboy, lives are left hanging in the balance and American interests are twisting in the wind.
Is everything all right? Our boss isn't happy.
May I? Please? This is Sophia Vukola.
It's kind of you to say.
I just wanted to thank you for everything that you and your men have done for me and Rukovia.
They're very courageous.
You have a lot to be proud of.
It's all right.
Hello.
Just so we're clear: that wasn't fair.
Uh-oh, we've got company.
I gotta go.
Get down, get down.
Can I just say something? It's my experience that guys wearing ski masks are never a good sign.
How many are there? Four.
And these bloodhounds look like they'll take all of a minute to sniff around, Michael.
Get a disguise on her, fast.
Take your jacket off.
Martinez, give me your coat.
Get down, get down.
You won't be needing that.
Here, put this on.
Wait a second.
What if they ask about my armband? Improvise.
Give me your name tag.
Here.
- Okay, let me handle this.
- Because? Because sometimes sheer force of personality can win the day.
Hello.
Papers.
We are election monitors.
We're authorized to travel without interference and with total access to resources deemed necessary to fulfill our mission.
Get out.
All of you.
It's a lovely day we're having.
Out.
What's he doing? Stealing the ballots.
That's the least of our problems.
Keep your mouth shut.
Go.
Go! Sophia! Sophia! Warren, let's go.
Give me some more! Give me a hand! With what? This! Come on! Wait, not the ballots! It's okay, Warren.
The people have spoken.
Allow me.
Thank you.
Excuse us.
And we're sure this is official? Yeah.
Warren said she's voting within her precinct.
Just.
State your name and place of residence.
Sophia Vukola.
Zanacer, Rukovia.
That's right, you heard the woman.
Sophia Vukola.
Now that's what I call rocking the vote.
Thank you.
It will be an honor and privilege to serve these brave people and see them free and live without fear.
Huh.
A good day at the office.
Whoo-hoo! Yeah! Thank you.
Thank you.
Is it appropriate for me to thank you now? It was our pleasure, Madam President.
Thank you.
You know, my parents marched with Dr.
King.
Today, I rode with the CIA.
All I can say is, history is weird.
Come on, Warren.
We're not that bad.
Well, even a broken clock is right twice a day.
And the CIA is a very broken clock.
Speaking of time, I gotta get going.
I have a election in Mali to observe.
I have to say, Warren, initially we got off on the wrong foot, but when the pressure was on, you really stepped up.
Hey, a lot of men don't show that kind of courage and presence of mind.
There's not a word to sum it up.
We just know it when we see it.
What the guys are trying to say, Warren, is that, uh, you've got what we spies call "the stuff.
" I got the stuff, huh? Mm.
Wait a second.
Are you guys trying to recruit me? If we were, would you be interested? Man, please.
Warren.
You can't tell me I didn't see a glimmer in that eye when we tossed the ballot box out the back of that truck.
Yeah.
It was fun to kick a little ass.
And that's exactly what the CIA is all about-- kicking ass for democracy.
That being said, I have to pass.
Well, boys, there's our ride.
Good luck, Warren.
Hey, wait! You have any business cards or something?
