deputy robert carpenter: I've Worked with the pierce county Sheriff's department now for 17 years.
I enjoy going to calls and handling problems under stress.
I like going to a high-risk Call, chaotic situation and Bringing peace to that situation And resolving it for the night.
We're responding to a report of An armed suicidal subject.
He's threatening to kill himself.
At first he said he had a bomb, But as it turns out, he might Have a box cutter.
He certainly has a box cutter And he's threatening to cut his Wrists and And also possibly, Uh, commit suicide by cop.
into the area.
As I remember, I may even know this guy.
I've dealt with him before.
Let me see your hands! Hands! You two down there, let me see Your hands.
(over radio): Say that again, go ahead and shoot me.
carpenter: Two at gunpoint.
Get down on the ground! go ahead and shoot me.
carpenter: Stay right there.
shoot me.
(man screams) (over radio): Suspect at gunpoint, somewhere south of the 77 carpenter: Face down or you're going to get it again.

(officers speaking indistinctly) officer: Let me see your hand.

carpenter: Taser application.
(over radio): Taser Application, 2356.
I'm the one you're looking for? officer: Are you carl? yes.
officer: Okay.
carpenter: One in custody, No problems.
(over radio): You still want the beeper? carpenter: Cancel the beeper.
officer: You got any weapons On you? (man mutters) What? no.
officer: No? (man mutters, dog panting) carpenter: Why we out here today? officer: What's going on? Hmm? well, I've been drinking.
officer: You've been drinking? yeah.
carpenter: You ran at a police officer with a gun out-- You wanted to get shot? gun? carpenter: Yeah.
I didn't have no gun.
carpenter: No, I did.
oh.
carpenter: I had a gun out, pointed at you, and you decided to run at me.
That's a good way of getting yourself shot.
(mutters, laughs): I run by you, but carpenter: Well (man mutters) officer: Is this yours? carpenter: You had a box cutter on you? officer: You got any knives, or anything? as far as I know, no.
There should be no weapons that I know of.
officer: That you know of? yeah (mutters) officer: Why are we out here, man? huh? officer: Why are we out here? there's a lot of problems.
officer: A lot of problems? yeah.
officer: Like what? (man mutters) Huh? You want to kill yourself, or what? actually, I don't.
officer: Actually, you don't? yeah.
carpenter: Did you tell someone that you wanted to? officer: You tell somebody? I don't know.
It's one of those confusing things.
officer: Bring his knee up.

carpenter: Well, it's confusing to us 'cause we got a Call that u said you were going to blow something up, and then blow something up? officer: Hey, help me (laughs): Come on.

officer: Help me get you up.
chocolate, be careful.
officer: There you go.
her name is chocolate.
officer: Stand up.

her name's chocolate.
carpenter: We're going to go To the patrol car out in front Over here, or is there one up khere? Oh, no, we're going to go to This one over here.
don't worry about me.
I'm not going to do anything Bad to you.
You or your officers.
carpenter: Okay.
Well, you shouldn't have run at Me the way We can't go in this car.

I was to a point, I was officer: Come on.
I mean A lot of people is Driving me crazy.
officer: Come on, let's go.
carpenter: Let's go over to This car here.

carpenter: So, you were with Him when I pulled up.
You both were hiding down there.
Why were you hiding, first of All? 'cause he didn't want to go Away.
carpenter: Well, what was he Saying earlier? 'cause we got some information In the call that he said he Might have had a box cutter.
I took everything away from him.
carpenter: Okay, do you have the box cutter? officer 2: We already took it-- it's up there.
carpenter: Okay.
Did he use it on himself? No.
carpenter: Did he threaten to use it on himself? no.
carpenter: Did he make any threats to anyone else or to you? no.
No.
carpenter: No? no.
carpenter: Okay.
So, as far as you're concerned, He didn't do anything to To Jeopardize his own safety? not at all.

carpenter: Okay.
deputy roger fuller: This was taken off of his female accompaniment.
carpenter: And so, this is The box cutter that he said he Was going to use on himself? fuller: Right.
carpenter: Did you see if he had any cuts on his arms? fuller: He had, uh, some Superficial cuts on his forearm.
carpenter: From tonight? From this? fuller: There's a little blood on there, man.
carpenter: Oh, yeah, there sure is.
fuller: Yeah.
carpenter: All right.
Thanks for the warning.
And then, he's getting the prongs out? Or did you guys do that? fuller: I don't know if fire is taking it out if taking it out.
I know that he's back in the Truck with them now.
So carpenter: Okay, we'll go see What they got.
How did it feel? I didn't feel nothing till I Just felt the shock.
(man groans in pain) carpenter: It's a little uncomfortable.

carpenter: So, don't run at the police when they got a gun drawn on you.
If I didn't have a taser, I might not have had any other choice but to shoot you.
Is that what you wanted? well, last-last time I was like that, like that dog carpenter: Yeah? the policeman actually had yhe dog attack me.
carpenter: Yeah.

I would've been calmer, but People just pressure me.

I was to the point where I didn't care.

I mean, I-I'm Already Almost to a point where all this (bleep) I'm about ready to walk away, Get a divorce, go let my ex-wife Take it, fine, (bleep).
carpenter: Hmm.

carpenter: Okay, take a seat For the firefighters and let These guys take care of you, Okay? I got their nice thing all Muddy.
(chuckles) carpenter: Well, that's one Of those calls that you don't Like going to.
The, uh, the guy first Uh, the first call that we got Was the guy was suicidal and he Intended to commit suicide by Cop.
He said he had a bomb, and he Did have a box cutter.
Luckily, the planets were Aligned and, uh, his girlfriend Had the sense to take the box Cutter off of him before I got Here on scene.
He's now going off to the Hospital, and luckily it turned Out that way and not the other.
deputy james jackson: Recently, we started an Investigation in reference to Pill-related deaths within Hillsborough county.
We're currently second in the Nation in pill-related deaths, So what we're trying to do now Is target these pain-management Clinics and see if we can put a Stop to the selling and Distribution of pills.
Um, we have several undercover Detectives that will be at These pain management clinics Trying to purchase pills from The clients.
deputy kris gundersen: We're Going to leave this pain clinic Over here, and we're gonna head Right down the street.
There's another one.
A lot of these pain clinics are All in the same area.
One of our other units-- he just Observed a transaction between Two people at this pain clinic.
officer 1 (over radio): Okay, guys, we are set up to do the Deal on the southwest side of The parking lot.
jackson: Right now, we're Just hanging out, waiting for The undercover to come in to, Um, call the person that's gonna Deliver the-the The Medications to him.
Uh, they're supposed to do the Deal somewhere betw Southwest Corner of this parking lot.
Once the deal goes down, They're gonna give a bust Signal.
Then we're gonna go and, um, try To make contact with the u.

officer 1: Got someone Approaching the car, going to The passenger side.
Stand by.
officer 2 (over radio): Just Stay put.
(garbled radio transmission) Okay, we're gonna need to take Both vehicles, okay? (garbled radio transmission) Move in.

gundersen: Sheriffs.

jackson: Put your hands back.

If It may even be the Seven-year min-man, but it's At least a three-year min-man, Okay? Only way around is to be Cooperative, okay? What's the deal? What's going on today? I don't know.

did he explain to you about Handing somebody the pills or Something or? Then why did you get in the car And instantly hand me the pills? I don't know.

When, uh When he got in the Car, I asked him I said, "are you the person That's supposed to be selling me The pills?" And he said, "yeah.
" He then removed this pill bottle From his pocket.
stewart: Okay.
and I asked him I said, "are they all there?" He said, "yeah, all 120 of them are there.
" stewart: Okay.
He then gave me the pills.
So that's how, when I gave the Move in signals, I was counting The money, um, and he kept, you Know, insinuating that he knew The other person, said, "yeah, I'm straight, they're good, they're all there.
" stewart: So, this He was unknown to you prior to this deal? he was Yes, he was unknown to me.
It was supposed to be the other Individual, was supposed to be The one to, um, that was Drive That was, uh, to Deliver the pills to me.
stewart: Yeah.
this guy just came out of Nowhere, got in He was with the guy, but I've Never met him, never talked to him.
It was never discussed during The deal about anybody else.
stewart: But you had made the Negotiations with the other one? we'd made the negotiations With the other individual.
stewart: So we got two for The price of one? yes, sir.
stewart: All right, good job.

Okay, well, You know you're gonna have to go To jail for this, okay? okay.

just found this in his Vehicle.
It's the receipt for, uh, all Three of his prescription Medications that he just bought Today.
So he just got all these scrips Filled prior to coming up here.
stewart: So he sold you an Entire prescription? yeah, he got, um, a Prescription of oxycodone, which He sold me the whole Prescription.
Made mention over the phone About the, uh, xanax, which is This here.
He's got a full scrip of xanax.
stewart: Okay.
and he's got another scrip Here that we didn't even talk About.
detective richard mesa: Watch Your head when you get in.

(indistinct chatter) yeah mesa: No.

gundersen: This is what we've Been working on with this pill Task force, targeting these People that go and get their Prescriptions, and then they go And they immediately sell them Afterwards, and today it just Happened that they sold to an Undercover narcotics detective.
The older gentlemen brought the Other guy over with him.
That happens to be his Son-in-law.
And his son-in-law is the one that That, uh, dealt the Pills to the-the undercover Detective, and he understands what he did wrong.
His father-in-law seems to not Understand what he may have done Wrong.

Currently right now I lead for The youth at my church here in Amarillo.
It's a good stress reliever for Me away from work and it's Something fun to do and just Something I've kind of always Done.

vanover: I'm responding to a Major traffic accident-- vehicle Versus a motorcycle.
The callers on scene are saying That the motorcycle driver is Down and that a hispanic or White female has run from the Scene of the second vehicle that Was involved.
So I'm gonna pull up over here And see if I can't help them Locate the other driver.
officer carmela smith: These People saw her run, but they Didn't chase her 'cause they Were more worried about the guy On the bike.
vanover: Is he 10-7? smith: I don't know.
vanover: They load him up? (over radio): She had Injuries with blood on her Hands and face.
(indistinct chatter) she runs through the second Bay right here.
fto chris padron: Okay, yeah, we got that other officer looking yeah, and I don't know where she ran off to.
padron: You can go check for her 'cause you're in an unmarked.
There's a white female, gray Shirt.
vanover: We're sure she's White? (overlapping chatter) I don't know.
We were focusing on the guy on The sidewalk.
vanover: She took off from that car up there, came this way, and went through there? I know she had dark hair.
no, she was talking to the Woman in that house over there on the yard, like, flipping out, freaking out.
yelling.
she took off running.
padron: The guy right here in the red hat, right behind you, by that dryer vanover: Uh-huh.
padron: He got a full description of her vanover: All right.
Hey, man, what's-- what does, What does she look like? she's got a gray t-shirt vanover: Okay.
And blue jeans, brown hair up in a ponytail.
vanover: Hispanic, white? she looked white, but she Took off running this way.
vanover: Okay, and we didn't see where she went after she went running.
She went through there.
I was dealing with him.
there's an empty field.
vanover: How long ago was that that she took off running That way? before they pulled up.
vanover: Was it about five minutes ago? maybe Yeah, five minutes Ago, yeah, she's she was freaking out all over The place.
she's in the neighborhood Somewhere.
vanover: All right.
Right now we're looking for a, a Female that was probably going To be one half of this wreck.
The man that was driving the Motorcycle is severely injured, And she was driving this car.
I don't know exactly what Happened with the wreck, but the Witnesses here are saying a White or hispanic female in a Gray shirt and blue jeans was Hysterical after the wreck Happened and took off running Westbound away from the scene, So we're going to go see her and Find out if she's involved in This wreck.
Hey, vaughan, which car is she In? Is she in this one? (sobbing): She didn't kill Anybody, did she? The girl that drove my car-- Jessica.
vanover: The girl that what? jessica drove my car.
Please tell me she didn't kill Anybody.

Jessica was her name-- a friend That I know from the bar.
She drove my car.
vanover: Okay.
You know that all the witnesses Out here say that you were the one driving, right? no, it was not me.
vanover: Okay, I'm saying all The sober witnesses out here are Saying that you were the one Driving.
it was not me driving.
vanover: Okay, that's fine.
I was not the one driving.
vanover: I'm not saying you are or didn't.
I'm telling you that all the Witnesses out here say that you Got out of the car, ran over to A house over here, screaming and Everything else, and then took Off running.
I was the passenger.
vanover: Okay, then, why did You run from the police? 'cause I run-- 'cause I-- you Didn't know who was in the dri-- I didn't know what to do.
vanover: People don't run When they don't know what to do.

vanover: Okay, being scared, Though, doesn't-- normal people Don't run when they're scared.

vanover: Okay, and you met Her at the bar tonight? Is that what you said? yeah, I saw her at the bar, Yeah.
vanover: You saw her at the Bar and then what? then she drove me home.
vanover: Where is home? I live at 3206 (blip).
vanover: Why are you over here at 17th and western? 'cause I was driving her home.
vanover: You were driving her Home? 'cause she was driving herself home, yeah.
vanover: Okay, you need to start being honest well, yeah, that's-- I mean, I was going to stay the night with her.
vanover: You just said it.

vanover: Okay, but you just Said, "I was driving her home.
" well, my-- okay, my cousin Alex lives with my grandmother.
vanover: You just now said to Me, "I was driving her home.

vanover: Okay, that's not What you said, though.

okay, well, I was with my boyfriend vanover: Okay, you're not being honest.
no, I was.
vanover: And honesty and Remorse and those kind of things Are what go a long way in these kind of deals.
Lying about what happened, running after you nearly killed Somebody after you're driving no, not at all, no.
vanover: That's not good.
Okay, I'm just, I'm just letting you know.

well, the funny thing about That is: She's got an injury to Her left arm-- upper bicep-- and We got this blood over here on This side that extends out here In an area where maybe she had Her arm hanging out when she Crossed the line.
vanover: Amy, listen to me.
Here's what's going to happen.

vanover: Okay, look at me.
yes, sir.
vanover: Amy.
I'm not looking at you.
vanover: You're going to go to jail for dui tonight because Everybody out here, including me, believes you were driving that vehicle.

vanover: We're going to take your blood that's fine.
vanover:And we're going To test it for the amount of Alcohol that's in your system, And it's going to show that You're over the legal limit and You're going to go to jail for it.
Okay? So that's what's going to happen.
All right? I just talked to the officers That are at the hospital with The guy that was on the motorcycle.
They say he's probably going to Live, but he's possibly going to Lose a leg.
You know, it's an old message-- Don't drink and drive-- but People do it every day and this Is the result of it.
officer (over radio): I've got him at gunpoint.
dispatcher: At gunpoint, Cover is code three.
