COPS (1989) s24e09 Episode Script

Morons on Parade #5

I'd always wanted to be a police officer, and after I retired, found a good second career to go into.
I really like what I've, what I'm doing.
It's been four years, and I still, still like coming to work, and, and it's clichéd, but I like to protect and serve.
Okay, we've got a vehicle that we ran through the mobile data terminal.
And the registered owner doesn't have a valid driver's license.
Hi.
My name's Officer Dallman of the Des Moines police.
Do you have a driver's license? Uh, no, I don't.
Okay, are you the registered owner of the vehicle? No, I just dropped off my friend.
- I live right there, cause I live right there - Okay, do you On 31st.
I didn't, I didn't turn 'cause I saw you in the middle of the - street, so that - That's fine.
- I mean, I got the registration here - Do you have an ID on you at all? My school ID, sir.
Can I see that? I don't even have my school ID with me.
Do you have anything, any ID at all on you? Um no, sir, just my school ID I had on me, but I don't have it on me.
You have any kind of id on you at all? I mean, I live right there, on that block right there, the house, that building.
Have you ever had an Iowa id or Iowa driver's license? No? I need you to step out of the car for me.
Put your hands up there.
Do you have anything on you I need to know about? No, sir.
Nothing, no weapons, or any drugs or anything like that? No.
No.
Okay.
Okay, go ahead and step around to the back end of the car for me.
Is there a problem, sir? Sorry.
So, uh, you can't be driving on city streets.
- You have no - Just trying to make a buck, man, I'm fixing stereos, sir.
I understand.
I've got to write you a few tickets, okay? So I need you to sit on the curb for me.
Yes, sir.
Uh Can I turn the engine off? 'Cause it's going to kill the battery.
Yeah, I'll turn it off Okay.
Hey, Natalie.
Hey.
So what's going on? Do me a favor.
I pulled over, uh, marlon here.
He was driving his friend's car.
His friend, uh, on the registration has no driver's license.
He has no driver's license, either, they have no insurance.
Of course.
- Um - 3-0-2.
If you just want to keep an eye on him, I just got to write up those tickets.
Yeah.
Appreciate it.
Running Marlon's information one more time.
He gave me a middle initial he thought that they put in last time he had a ticket.
I'm not finding his name.
Oh, he's running! Hey! Get on the ground! No! Okay, okay, I give up.
Are you done? Are you done? I'm done, I'm done, I'm done.
Get on the ground.
Get on your face.
I'm done, I'm done! I'm done! Freakin' serious? I'm done, I'm done! I'm done, I'm done! I'm done! Okay? I'm done.
I'm done! I'm done.
I've got his arm.
Okay.
Okay, I'm done.
I knew he had something in his shoe.
Okay, I'm done! Ow, you're hurting me! I'm done, okay? Just relax.
Any officers being in contact with an ambulance, please advise.
I'm done.
Ow! You're hurting me.
I'm done.
- I'm done, okay, please? I - If you wouldn't have ran, I wouldn't have had to tackle you.
I know, but it was because I got scared.
I won't go to jail, will I? Well, now you are going to go to jail.
No.
I've got to Roll over.
Sit up.
Can I put on my shoe? No.
I think it might be locked.
Just stay there.
Dropped the car keys.
- Did you get the - I think he dropped them all on the ground.
Did you get the rest of the stuff? I don't think so.
Just step out one more, bro.
Check his foot.
You got any more in your sock? Lift your foot up.
He had 'em in his shoe.
I ain't got nothing What do you keep reaching for? Trying to pull my pants up, right there.
All right.
That's quite a bit of stuff you got in your shoe, there, bud.
Huh? - Hey - I smoke a little.
Is that why you didn't want to take your shoes off? Yeah.
Really?! Hey! Quit wrestling.
You think you're going to run away? Well, if I tried, maybe I can get away.
I'm trying, man.
You know? Come on, man.
I don't want to go to jail, man.
Get in the car.
You are now.
Get in.
While you were in the car running his information, um, I asked him to just kick off his shoes because he was just kind of acting a little bit hinky.
And then he took off, and then, you know, we took him down to the ground.
And I took, I took him down to the ground, 'cause he was running, and it turns out he had four bags of weed in his shoe.
Mm-hmm.
Um, so And then after that, when we got him right back there to the car, as we were checking him again, he took off again.
So I mean, I don't I'm assuming this is why he ran.
Hey there.
Why did you decide to run? Because I was scared.
I thought you I didn't want to, you know, to go to jail.
And after you were in cuffs, where were you gonna go? When you started running away? Nowhere.
Far as I could.
Last, my last minute of freedom.
Far as I could.
All righty.
Well, we're going to obviously arrest him for possession.
Finish up the, uh, traffic stuff, impound the car, and then take him off to jail.
I teach at a local university, where they have a law enforcement academy.
This is a young man/young woman's profession, and there comes a point where my knees will not handle this and somebody else probably needs to come out here.
So I just want to try and pass some things on that I've learned.
It's a blue four-door.
Gonna be eastbound on, uh, Chestnut expressway from west bypass.
Uh, just blew a red light.
About four or five occupants in the car.
They're approaching Scenic and Chestnut.
Looks like they're going to stop here at college and scenic.
Hey, driver, step out.
Come on back here to me.
Put your hands behind your back.
You blew that stop sign back there, and then you kind of took off from me.
You in a hurry? Did I take off from you? I'm sorry.
I didn't even see you there.
Oh, you didn't? Why are you in such a hurry? I did run the stop sign, and that was because I honestly was speeding.
Yeah, you were flying.
I was speeding, and I didn't have time to stop.
I would've squealed I would've just squealed right through anyways.
Oh, okay.
And, uh, we were just cruising, having a good time, and I just decided to speed a little bit.
That was my fault, my bad.
What'd you do with the marijuana that's all over your shirt? Um, I honestly smoked earlier-- I will not lie.
Oh, okay.
Did you throw it in the car here somewhere? Um, there's honestly bud laying all over the car, but I've had that in there for weeks.
Okay.
Yeah, I just did not bother to vacuum it out.
Or get it off your shirt.
Okay.
Hey.
Why don't everybody just get out? 'Cause there's weed all over the place here, and I'd really rather just charge one person instead of a bunch.
Hi.
How are you, ma'am? You have an ID with you? Yeah, he, uh, already got it.
Okay.
Go back here and hang out with them.
I think he was in the process of rolling it, and when he saw us, he didn't really know what to do.
Hmm.
Here's marijuana-- lot of marijuana stems and some shake, couple seeds here.
Some roaches.
She was digging in her purse.
Yeah.
I yanked it out and set it on top.
Okay.
Shrooms.
Mushrooms right there.
Little bit of weed there.
Hey, ma'am, is this your cell phone in the bag? Yeah.
Uh, looks like you got some shrooms and a little bit of marijuana there.
Mm-hmm.
Um, you just got a text message while your phone was laying there.
Said, uh, "I need a quake.
" Oh, God.
Oh, man, that's That's, like, drug messaging, right? Right.
What's a quake? - Quarter - Quarter of what? Quarter of weed? Yeah.
A quarter what? Gram? No.
- A quarter - Like, it's called a quarter, but it's - Ah - A certain amount of ounces.
Okay.
So, every now and then, you just kind of sell a little bit to kind of get by? I don't really sell.
I just help a friend.
Oh, okay.
Who's your friend that you would help? Don't really want to tell you.
Okay, all right.
I'm not asking you to really snitch out your friends.
Um, these are mushrooms? Yeah.
Are they decent? Yeah.
You get a pretty good buzz on them? Yeah.
Yeah? It was my first time getting them.
Okay.
Uh, is this decent stuff, or is it kind of ditch weed? It's Reggie.
It's what? Reggie-- like, regular weed.
Oh, okay.
Normal.
Well, I got bad news.
You got to go to jail tonight.
Okay.
So now, just bring your hands up away from your body.
Wow, I don't even know if the cuffs will fit on you.
You been to jail? I've never even been pulled over by a cop.
Really? I'm kind of scared.
Okay.
How old are you? Eighteen.
Go back there and stand with officer lord.
He's the guy probably holding your Your license.
Come here, man.
Been smoking tonight, right? Few hours ago.
While you were driving, you were rolling and smoking? My friends were, yeah.
They were rolling up, and yeah, I smoked.
Yeah.
And the leftover that we did not The leftover that was not put in the blunt, my friends just decided to be dumb and dump on my head, and then I scraped it off and it fell on my shirt.
Why were you driving that fast? You didn't Did you even want to stop up there? Um, I actually had my foot on the brake.
My friends just, uh, saw me Actually witnessed me starting to slow down, and I'm like, "I I can't stop.
I'm going to skid right through it.
" Okay.
So I I just let off the brake and idled through.
That way, I would make sure I would not hit anything.
Yeah, you idled through, all right.
How fast were you going there? Probably about 60.
Were you trying to elude me? No, I honestly did not see you behind me because my music was up so loud that I did not hear the sirens.
Oh, okay, okay.
And, well, I I kept going because I was trying to get past the car, because if I was 'Cause I needed to be in the right lane anyways.
Right.
So if I was If I was to slow down and try to, uh, cross into the lane, I was going to smash right into one of them, so I kept on speeding up to get past them.
Oh, rather than maybe using your brake? - Yeah, because I - Okay.
Ah, that's cool.
It makes sense.
Yeah, okay.
All right, that makes sense.
So right now you're under arrest for driving under the influence, also.
All right.
All right, right now you're just going to go for felony possession and misdemeanor possession of the marijuana.
How long you been smoking? When'd you get into that? Sixteen.
Sixteen? All right.
Do you make any money selling? I don't sell.
You don't sell? You just give to your friends if they need it? No, I help my friends.
Okay.
When you say you help your friends, I mean, explain that to me.
Well, I have a friend that sells, and then I have people that hit me up so I can ask him for it.
Oh, you're just kind of the middleman then.
Yeah.
Okay.
All right.
Well, that's much better than just being the guy that sells.
Do you think? I don't know.
You don't know? I can tell you it's not, okay? You're 18 years old.
You're on your way to jail.
Does that scare you at all? A little bit.
Little bit? Yeah.
Okay.
Every year, I go to the school my kids attend and do their career day.
And as much as the kids love my patrol car and all the equipment that I bring, it's, uh It's kind of funny, but I can't seem to hold a candle to the stuff that the farmers bring.
The kids love the tractor and all the stuff that they give out.
Just trying to remember, I worked a couple of really have much video.
All right, we've been dispatched to a robbery of a person, uh, from a cell phone store.
Apparently someone was The, uh, employee was coming out with a bank bag.
An unknown suspect approached her from behind and, uh with a knife and took the money.
So we're going to see if we can get a better description of the person that was involved.
Okay, you hurt? No.
You're not hurt at all? Okay.
Did you Did you get a look at him at all? No, I could just see his arm 'cause of the knife.
Okay.
And as he was going, I thought he cut me, but he just ripped my shirt.
Okay, and where were you? I came out.
I was at the side of my car trying to get in, and I was on the phone 'cause I was trying to call my boss.
Okay.
And I I don't know if my boss picked up, but I know he attacked me, and I was screaming, "get off of me.
" Okay.
He grabbed my purse, and he I don't know what he took.
I haven't even looked.
Okay, where were You were standing up here? You want to walk over and show me? So you didn't see any clothing or anything like that? Did you see anything on his arm-- like, a description or anything or? I'm the manager here, and I'm always here by myself.
Okay.
He said, "I know you're here by yourself every day.
You better stay still and don't try to get after me or look at "me 'cause I'll kill you.
" Okay, and where Where were you? You were pretty close right here? I was right here trying to open my door.
Okay.
And I was on the phone.

Right here? Okay.
Was he white, black, hispanic? He looked real light-skinned.
Looked light-skinned? I wasn't sure if he was white or what.
Okay.
The victim saw him running out towards kfc on the sidewalk.
Um, light skin, possibly hispanic, um, or you know, white male with a tan.
That's all we've got right now.
He grabbed me, he yanked me.
Where was the money at? On the top of my purse in a big in the night deposit.
I took night deposit.
I go straight to the bank from here.
What kind of bag was it in? It was in a plastic bag.

Okay.
And then I put the money in here and I seal it.
You seal everything, and then this is where you write all your name, store information? And the amount and everything.
Then, do you have to log, like, the, uh The number on here? Like, this number right here, I write it, and I put it in my bank book.
Okay.
I'm gonna go talk to the deputies out front.

Now, you see how many deputies are here? Mm-hmm.
I'm going to give you this one opportunity to tell me actually what happened.
If you lie to me, there's a possibility you're going to go to jail tonight.
You understand me? So, you need to tell me exactly what happened.
First of all, there was no robbery, correct? Correct? I was attacked in the back of my car.
