All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
I like to spend time with my family.
I just got back from vacation.
My dad and I went bow-hunting for deer and elk.
We were out there for a week, hiking around in the woods, and, uh, we didn't have much success hunting, but we had a really good time, you know, just getting away from civilization, uh, being out in the woods and spending time with my dad.
We just saw a guy driving real erratically.
He stopped in the middle of the street.
Yep, he's taking off.
Uh, southbound about 103.
Truck's turning east on Stark from 103.
Speeds are 70.
Uh, we're in pursuit of a truck that we just saw dark out.
He was driving really erratically.
And, uh, so we're trying to catch up to him.
It's a red Nissan pickup, compact style.
I don't have a plate on it.
And he just stacked it up.
And it he's I'm just gonna get out and chase him here.
Put your hand out.
You're choking me.
You're choking me.
Get your hand out.
- You're choking me.
- Roll on your stomach now.
Hey, you're choking me.
Roll on your stomach.
All right, you're choking me.
You're choking me.
- I got it.
- You got it.
You're choking me; I can't Okay, sir, I can't breathe.
Okay, just chill out, chill out.
- Please, I can't breathe.
- Just relax.
Just relax, okay? Just relax.
Please, okay? Okay, all right.
Lay on your side.
You want to sit up? - Yeah, please.
- Sit up.
Sit up.
There you go.
You all right? No, sir.
Nice deep breaths.
We got an ambulance coming, okay? If we take you out of handcuffs, you gonna get squirrely on us? No.
Won't take off.
- Have medical conditions, dude? - Yeah.
- What do you have? - A bad heart.
- A bad heart? - High blood pressure.
Blood pressure and a bad heart.
I'm gonna take him out of handcuffs.
You're not gonna run around, right? Not gonna run on us, are you? No.
No.
You scared me enough.
Looks like he just ripped a marijuana grow.
Oh, really? Bed of the truck's all full of He's got thick - plastic bags full of like, plants and - And he dropped a bag on Stark, too.
A bag came flying out on Stark, so we need to have somebody go down there like at 105? Just on the north side of Stark.
It came flying out.
Yeah, it's all marijuana grow stuff.
- So we'll want to pursue that.
- Right.
That's what I'm guessing.
So he may have possibly just ripped off a marijuana grow somewhere.
Medical marijuana grow or illegal, one of the two.
Hey, Thomas? Why'd you take off on us, man? I don't know.
I'm scared.
I don't know.
I don't know.
Well, what are you scared of? Just I got I'm not going to prison again.
What would you be scared of? - You're an ex-con? - I been clean for 12 years.
Okay, what's in the back of the truck then? Shit I was supposed to be getting it, picking it up, throwing it away.
Is there any marijuana in the back of that truck? No, not that I know of.
I just get the bags at the door, all the bags there.
Where'd you get the bags from? - Down the street.
- Down the street? Okay, why don't you jump on this thing, all right? I can't jump on that.
We'll talk more.
Have a seat.
Just because the police are behind you doesn't mean you should be scared.
There's something else going on.
So this is the truck we were chasing.
Ran right into this sign right here.
I'm gonna open this bag up and see It feels like there's a lot of stems, marijuana, from marijuana plants in here that have been harvested, which it is.
So this is what he was trying to dump.
Somewhere there's a He came from a marijuana grow.
They harvested all the plants, it looks like or whatever plants were ready.
And then they were just trying to find a place to dump stems and all the rest of the garbage.
And so that's what all this is.
You can tell.
And that's probably the reason why he ran is because he knew he had all of this stuff left over in the truck.
All right, Thomas, tell me where you're coming from 'cause you got a whole Listen to me.
You got a whole bunch of marijuana grow stuff in the back of that truck.
All right, you got four fertilizer bins in the back.
I mean, fertilizer bins this big, man.
And you got all the old stems and stuff that nobody wants in huge bags.
- You're coming back from - I tried to make some extra money.
It's on the end of the block.
I go get it, and I take it and throw it away.
Where'd you get the stuff at? Where'd you pick it up at? I'm not gonna tell you that.
I live around here.
I'm not gonna get killed.
I'm just trying I'm 60 years old, I'm trying to make some cash.
But you knew there was marijuana stuff in the back of that truck.
That's why you ran.
The bottles I think was vegetables or some shit.
No, but there's a reason why you took off on me in the truck.
You got the bottles in there that you knew was for a grow op.
I knew it was for plants.
- Yeah, you knew it was for plants.
- That's all I knew.
Listen, let's stop beating around the marijuana bush and be honest here, okay? You saw my lights and sirens, right? You saw my lights.
You heard my sirens.
I got scared, man.
You got scared and you ran? - Yes, sir, I did.
- Okay.
I'm too fucking old motherfucker.
You are too old, man.
So how much do you get paid to get rid of that garbage? - 50 bucks? - Yeah.
All right, Thomas, maybe we'll talk a little bit later when you get back to hospital, okay? Yes, sir.
All right, you guys good? Thank you.
Thanks for waiting.
- Where'd that come from? - Behind the seat.
Tucked in between the seat and the wall.
Where's the truck registered? Do we know? Possibly where the grow op is? 'Cause that sure looks like something you'd cut down plants with.
So they're paying him 50 bucks to get rid of all the what's left of the evidence at the grow op.
It was a pretty poor attempt at trying to get away.
He obviously didn't know where he wanted to go or what he wanted to do, so he's well past his prime in terms of trying to get away from the police.
The Strip is very unique.
You see a lot of diverse people.
I personally love working on the Strip.
When I first became a cop, things used to shock me all the time, but now not so much.
Every now and then there is someone that will say something to me or lie to me in such a way that it does kind of shock me a little bit, but I get over it.
This van right here ran a red light.
It doesn't have a plate on it.
We're gonna stop and see what's going on with it.
I'll call it out.
It's gonna be an unregistered van.
We're gonna be in the parking lot at the Tuscany.
Brown in color Ford.
Occupied one time.
Oh, he's trying to get rid of something.
Stop your vehicle.
Go ahead and get us another unit.
I'm not letting him get out of here.
Stop your vehicle now.
Hey! Robert, southbound on the Boulevard.
Pull over now.
Dude, he's gonna run this thing.
He's gonna get popped.
Eastbound Flamingo at Paradise.
We're gonna be southbound Paradise.
Thank you, 85.
Did you try to pull him over? That's affirm.
We're southbound on Paradise.
All right, we're going 45.
Light traffic.
Pull over.
Okay, Unit 5 will show.
Stop your vehicle.
- We're pulling into - We're pulling into Harbor Island, 370 Harmon.
It's a dead end back here, so he's gonna coast right in.
Dude, where is he gonna try to go? - He's gonna - Metro Police! Metro Police! All right, man, all right.
Hey, get on the ground! Get on the ground! Get on the ground! I'm done.
I'm done.
All right, I'm done.
Stand up.
What's going on, man? What's your deal, bro? Are you serious? I just got no license, man.
Huh? I got no license.
You got no license? So you want us to run and chase you all the way over here? Get out and run for no license? We write you a ticket and we kick you.
Now you're going for a felony.
What did you do to your van there? What are you trying to run from, huh? I just got carried away.
I don't know, I should have just pulled over.
You made an illegal U-turn back there at the light.
- Is that your car? - Yeah, it's my car.
That's your car? Now look at it.
It's all messed up.
I know.
- For what, a ticket? - Yeah.
- Do you got warrants? - Yeah.
Driving on a suspended.
You got warrants for driving on a suspended? He doesn't have ID.
So you got warrants and you don't have a license.
- You high? Use drugs? - No.
Never? - No.
I have, but not - The vehicle's got no license plate.
Maybe it's possibly stolen.
The ignition's punched.
Obviously, he doesn't care about it.
You can tell by the damage to the front end here, the tires.
Looks like we may have some stolen property here on the front seat, some electronic equipment, maybe burglary tools.
I also spoke with security.
They said that they've seen him casing in the area before.
He may have been breaking into residences, so doing burglaries, home invasions, stuff of that nature.
We all we have is a simple, minor traffic violation, and now we have a few felonies.
So you just bought this car from a guy? - What's his name? - Doug.
Doug? When did you buy the car from Doug? I've had it for about a week or so.
- About a week? - Yeah.
Does it have a key? - It had a key, right, and - So how do you start it now if it doesn't have a key? A screwdriver? Does that seem normal for a car you just bought? No, it don't, and I've been arrested before, and I just didn't want to, you know, go through the hassle.
Go through the hassle of what? Having to go to jail.
For what though? It's your car; you bought it.
Yeah, but still, I don't have no paperwork right now.
What were you thinking? What were you thinking when you get in the car and you got to get out your Phillips screwdriver and start the car? Isn't that like, a red flag? - Yeah.
That's why - A reasonable person ain't gonna think that's normal, right? Got some traffic warrants, man.
$7,000 traffic warrant, man.
You got traffic warrants, too, man? Yeah, that's what I told you.
That's what you're running for, traffic tickets? What's this? Huh? - What's this? - I don't know about this.
It's not even mine, man.
- You know, I've never even - It's not yours? - I just pulled it out of your pocket, man.
- I had it there.
I know what comes out of my pants.
Looks to me like like black tar heroin.
Why not stop when you were asked to stop? I said, the warrant, you know what I mean? And I didn't have no place to pull over and the just You were in a parking lot.
What do you mean? You were in a parking lot.
You had no place to pull over? Well, there was no place.
You just stop.
Now you go from small warrants to felony crime.
How's that gonna make your life better? We're gonna have you sit here till we figure out what's going on with that vehicle, okay? Try to contact Doug.
Just hang tight, all right? My partner was checking the car in there, found this under right where you were sitting.
- You know what this is? - Salt? Salt? Looks like salt to me.
Well, would you want to put this on your steak? I don't think so.
Never know.
This looks like crystal meth, so you're gonna get charged for possession of a controlled substances.
We'll figure out exactly what this is because I don't think it's salt, all right? Went from misdemeanor to felony just like that just because he didn't want to stop.
When I was in elementary school, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department used to put on an event called Deputy Day, and they would come out and bring their patrol cars and the helicopter would land the airship in the field and put up a couple boots.
You know, that did it for me right there.
I knew from that day forward I wanted to be a police officer.
But looks like we're going to a domestic.
It originally came out as a keep the peace.
A female subject wanted to get some of her property, but now we got looks like an ex-boyfriend calling, upset because the ex-girlfriend now vandalized the property.
So we're gonna go see what's going on.
I didn't do anything.
I've been bugging him for weeks to let me come in the house.
What happened tonight? Apparently I dented the wall when me and my brother moved out today, and he was gonna call you guys, press charges on me, and This your home? It was for three years, yeah.
So this is a whole like, the house that you live in that you cost? It was, yeah.
I, yeah, I did everything.
He's at work 24 hours a day, so I did everything, and Okay, so he's upset because you put a dent in the wall? Yeah.
It's like, the size of a penny.
Is there anything you need to get inside the house? My couches, but I'm too small to do it by myself.
It took me, his brother that's like bigger than him, and me to get those over the back yard and in the house, and it's just not even worth it.
He can have them.
I don't want anything to do with him anymore.
- Okay, what's his name? - Tony.
Well, we'll go talk to him.
Hey, Tony, can you come on out really quick? How's it going, man? - All right, so - You don't have any - weapons or anything like that on you? - No.
All right, man, what's going on? Um, basically she was moving out and she's told me she called the cops when I called tonight because I found that there was a dent in my wall.
All right.
Um, the officer said that there was no record of her calling in this morning.
She said that there was gonna be an officer here watching her move out, escorting her.
I don't know if that happened because I wasn't here.
I was at work.
So I told her that, um, basically I wanted to press charges because she dented my wall.
Okay, so how could we solve this today? - Well, um, I - You called us right now, right? Yeah, I did call tonight because after I saw the dent in my wall, I was not happy with that.
Like, she moved out and she's saying that she didn't dent it, but it is a fresh dent.
It was not there this morning.
And the dent's probably about that big in my wall.
And I was gonna press charges because of that, because I'm not - happy with - Is that something - that's easily that we can fix it or - Um I mean, could it have been done when things were getting moved around and something could have accidentally bumped into it? I'm sure they did it when they were moving the dresser out or one of the beds or something.
So probably accidental; that's something.
I mean, it's not like there's a big gaping hole in the wall.
Christina, can you come over here really quick? Tony just told me about this dent that wasn't on the wall this morning but is there now.
- But I don't - Okay.
Over the past couple weeks, he has thrown phones at the wall; he has hit things.
- He has broken cupboards, so if I don't - Well, like I explained to Tony, and he seems pretty reasonable that it could have been done accidentally and while you're trying to move - things out - When I came up here to tell him that, he's yelling at me, telling me he doesn't fucking care because I left him, and I pissed him off, and I pissed him off by calling his mom today and trying to-- she's the owner of the house-- trying to get her to reason with me because he was being impossible, and all he's doing is screaming at me, telling me he doesn't care because I ruined his life by leaving him because you lied and cheated, not me.
Because I left him, I ruined everything, and he's gonna be unreasonable and he doesn't care how calling you guys affects me anymore.
Okay, well, we're here now, okay? I'm happy to pay for whatever I did.
I'm sorry.
I didn't mean to.
But I do not want to go to jail.
I don't want charges pressed on me; I don't want any of this.
I'm going to school right now.
I don't need this stuff.
I did this.
I've given you multiple notices.
I've done it cleanly; I haven't tried to take things from you.
I haven't stolen from you.
I haven't done anything wrong to you.
I have tried to break up with you like an adult, and you have made my life miserable for weeks now.
Just let it go.
I already have.
Then why are you doing this? - 'Cause I'm not happy with certain things, so - Like what? I'm not gonna get into drama.
I'm talking about the stuff that's happening now.
So then what did I break? You dented my wall, like I said.
Can I see it? I'm being an adult with you right at this moment.
If I broke something, show me.
I will happily fix it.
Full cash, whatever you want.
I don't care.
I'll even pay for somebody to come do it.
I mean, what else do you want from me? Nothing.
I just want my dent fixed in my wall.
I mean, how am I supposed to know? You want to see the dent? - Yeah.
- Yeah.
Tony, would you be willing to let her see that dent there? I guess.
Okay.
Can we come in? That wasn't there.
I got the cops called on me for that? - Yep, that's exactly - I will come paint your wall.
Nope, I want it fixed the right way.
That's not just paint.
There is a dent in there.
Drywall is dented.
What do you want, ten dollars for a piece of drywall and another ten for a gallon of paint? That's exactly why I didn't was to let you see.
I'll do it; I don't mind.
I'll even happily do it myself.
I'll have somebody else do it.
I don't care.
That's fine.
I want to get it fixed the right way.
That's fine.
Like I said, that's exactly why I didn't want to let you in.
That's totally fine.
I will pay you off, and that really shouldn't cost like, more - than I'd top it at like, Good.
I will get somebody to come out.
If I end up having a thousand dollar bill, we'll be in court - because that's ridiculous.
- That's fine.
I apologize, but I did not mean to do that.
I can guarantee you I didn't.
- Well, it wasn't there, so - Okay, I don't want to do anymore.
Okay.
All right, so you'll give her the bill then, okay? Yeah.
So we saw the hole.
- It's probably no bigger than - A dime.
- Smaller than a dime.
- Yeah.
Okay, so he's gonna take care of that or get an estimate and you're gonna promise to pay for that? I'll pay for it.
I don't care.
It's ridiculous.
- Okay, he's gonna send you an estimate or - That's fine.
Okay, are you gonna be coming back here anymore? Nope, that's it.
- Is that it? - I was done after today.
This whole phone call was a total surprise today.
Like, it should have been done and over with.
So is your relationship over then from this point? Yeah, it's been over.
Okay, so I guess you just have to wait for that bill then.
Yeah, that's fine.
Thanks.
You have a good night, okay? I've got him at gunpoint.
At gunpoint, Cover is Code Three.
