Degrassi: Next Class (2016) s04e01 Episode Script

Back To Reality

1 - Someone's gonna catch us.
- [Jonah grunts.]
We got away with this over the break, but break's over.
Oh, my gosh, you are bossy.
[scoffs.]
If Zoë asks where I was last night, I was shopping.
Yeah, like anyone's gonna believe that.
Oh, looky who I found.
Less talking, more carrying me.
Go, horsey! - [Zig neighs.]
- [all laugh.]
Hey! I didn't see you all break.
Did you get up to anything? Nothing at all.
[Chuckles.]
[chuckles.]
Is that a hickey? Oh! [chuckles.]
Oh, what a glorious day.
- Who is he? - Nope, nope.
Not doing this.
[chuckles.]
First day back and already an illicit affair! So, Tiny, where's Shay? Training for track and field.
My girl's trying to get scouted.
Don't change the subject.
- Whoa, look who's back.
- [Esme chuckles.]
Tris, you're back! [Chuckles.]
[Miles.]
Just one class a day for now, - but he's getting better every day.
- [chuckles.]
Sweet vampire bite.
[Jonah.]
Oh, you got a hickey? Who gave you that? Is he handsome? - He's hideous.
- Oh, come on, just tell us who it is.
[both chuckle.]
Uh, is that a rookie mark? [sighs.]
Come on.
Okay, what's this, huh? Come here.
[Goldi.]
We're having a funfair tomorrow! Bouncy castles, cotton candy.
I'm in.
And we get the whole afternoon off.
Not that I'm complaining, but didn't we just come back from break? The admin wanted to make sure we start off the semester - as stress-free as possible.
- [Esme chuckles.]
It's a suicide fair.
What? Admin clearly thinks that a few carnival games will stop everyone's depression.
[scoffs.]
You're a little out of bounds.
[Esme.]
Maybe you're out of bounds.
What if bouncy castles are someone's trigger? [chuckles.]
What? It's funny.
She's back? Maya's here? [Maya sighs.]
[chuckles softly.]
Hey, guys.
[softly.]
Hey.
[stammers.]
How are you? Um, I don't know.
I'm good, I guess.
Stop treating her like she's made of glass, weirdo.
[both chuckle.]
- [Grace.]
Hey! - Hi! - Let's go! - [Maya.]
Okay.
Can you guys believe that this is our last semester in high school? - [chuckles.]
- Mmm Squish.
I want a photo.
[Grace and Maya chuckle.]
- Is that a hickey? - [all laugh.]
Whatever it takes I know I can make it through And if I hold out I know I can make it through Be the best, be the best The best that I can be Whatever it takes I know I can make it I know I can make it through [Zoë over PA.]
You know what's better than one bouncy castle? How about two bouncy castles? That's right, I said it I'm gonna bounce in that castle until I puke! [Retches.]
Oh, gross.
[Chuckles.]
You guys are both gross.
But count me in.
Uh, not me.
Bouncy castles are lame.
- Who are you? - Bouncy castles are amazing.
Yeah, you used to love that stuff.
Well, I don't anymore.
So, uh, you can go plan your puke party without me, okay? I know why you don't like bouncy castles.
Because I'm older than seven? They just keep getting bigger, and now I'm uncomfortable all the time.
You just need a good bra.
I'll take you for a fitting after school.
Pass.
Does your back hurt after jumping jacks? And burpees and wind sprints and just about everything else in gym class.
And how about clothes? Like, how they fit? [sighs.]
They don't really make clothes for girls with my body type.
The right bra will change all that.
Did you know that 85% of women are wearing the wrong bra size? It's a human rights issue! Oh, yeah, right up there with world hunger.
You're the one who's always going on about equality.
Don't you want to do the same things as boys? Well, boys don't wear bras.
But they do bounce in castles.
[bell rings.]
Welcome to grade 12 art.
For your first assignment, you will partner up to recreate a famous Renaissance painting, with you as the subject.
I think I'd make a good Mona Lisa.
Uh, do you mind if I partner with Maya on this one? I just don't want her to be alone.
You'd rather I be alone? Well, she's just been through a lot.
[Esme sighs.]
Creepy camera guy is the only one who's still flying solo.
It's just for one project.
Thanks for being so cool about it.
[scoffs.]
He just wants to be there for her.
She almost died.
Yeah, I was there.
Doesn't mean he'll get back together with Maya.
It's just It took them months to get over their heartbreak when they broke up.
[Maya.]
That's a good idea.
[sighs.]
And Zig's never loved anyone half as much as Maya.
If they were so in love, why did they break up? Jealousy.
- Really? - Yeah.
Dude couldn't deal with anyone else near his girl.
Tiny, you're a wise man.
I like to think so.
Shall we make a masterpiece? - [all laughing.]
- Okay.
[Winston.]
Well [Zoë.]
Mmm-hmm.
Please tell me you have a way to hide this hickey.
Way ahead of you.
Take over for me? [sighs.]
And voilà! No one will notice your moped damage.
Moped? When you date someone in secret, because you don't want to be seen with them in public.
Yeah, it's like it's fun to ride, until someone sees you on it.
Moped.
People do that? Sadly, yes.
Well, I don't.
He's nothing to be ashamed of.
Then why don't you tell us his name? Because some humans value privacy.
[Winston.]
Or maybe you're his moped.
- [Zoë.]
Winston! - [stutters.]
What? I mean, maybe there's a reason he doesn't want anyone to know about it.
[chuckles.]
Well, don't listen to me.
I'm I'm an idiot.
- A huge idiot.
- I already said that.
[sighs.]
Just don't be upset if this doesn't work, okay? - [Lola.]
Do you even have it on yet? - Almost.
All I'm saying is that like I've literally tried every bra in the world, so - Obviously not the right ones.
- What are you doing? I have to adjust it or else it's useless.
It's not fair that I'm burdened with these fat sacks.
Band's nice and tight.
Most girls would kill for those.
Why? They always get in the way.
Cups look good.
When I was little, my mom never used to do physical stuff with us because she had these big boobs and I just don't want to miss out on stuff like she did just because I was given the worst genetic gift ever.
Now you won't have to, okay? How does it feel? A little better.
[chuckles.]
A lot better, actually.
Mmm.
Wait till you see them under clothes.
Well, it's not gonna be that different.
Are you seriously still doubting me? I have a gift, okay? Your life's about to change forever.
[sighs.]
I think you should paint me into this one.
The Birth of Venus.
- But the Venus is nude.
- So observant.
Uh won't this bother your boyfriend? [scoffs.]
You mean my boyfriend who'd rather be with sad little Maya than with me? [chuckles softly.]
I get it.
You're jealous.
[scoffs.]
Why would I be jealous of a girl who tried to kill herself? She's obviously a total headcase.
When did she do that? You didn't know? During the play.
I saw her during the play.
I helped her open the door to the roof.
[sighs.]
I would not spread that around.
[sighs.]
I could've stopped her.
[scoffs.]
Whatever.
She's fine now.
Can we just forget about stupid Maya? [sighs.]
God knows I'm trying to.
I should've known something was wrong.
I thought she just wanted to take pictures.
[scoffs.]
Enough.
Um What are you doing? How else are you supposed to paint me as Venus? Aw, do girls not get naked for you back home? Don't be shy.
This is for educational purposes.
So? Are we gonna make art or what? - Hey.
- Hey.
- Did I do this right? - Uh, let me see.
[Grace.]
You simplified the equation incorrectly.
You need to divide the numerator by three.
[whispers.]
Okay, what are you doing? I think we shouldn't be a secret anymore.
I thought you liked being a secret.
Do you only want to make out with me when no one else is around to see? So you So you'd rather people watched? [sighs.]
Look, I don't want Frankie to know yet.
This is about your ex? She was convinced you and me were hooking up last semester.
But we weren't.
Okay, but, um What if she I don't know, hurts herself? She wouldn't do that.
Well, yeah, we didn't think Maya would either.
Look, I just wanna give Frankie some time to recover from the breakup.
She's really upset about it? - From what I've heard, yeah.
- [sighs.]
Okay.
I get it.
Plus, isn't it kinda fun to hide in plain sight? [chuckles.]
No more hickeys.
[chuckles softly.]
No promises.
And my favorite part is the way Maya used shadows to define my arms.
Oh, yeah, it was really hard to get that definition.
- Hey! - [Madame Jean-Aux.]
Nice work.
- Who's next? - We'll go.
Uh, we decided to recreate The Birth of Venus.
We wanted it to be perfect, so I made Saad focus on getting every last detail right.
It was a lot of hard work, but I'm sure you'll agree that the end result is extraordinary.
May we present The Birth of Esme.
- [murmuring.]
- Oh, man.
[student chuckling.]
Uh, Zig, would you like to start the critique, since you also have firsthand knowledge on the subject? This is totally unacceptable.
Why would you choose that painting? Do you have a problem with the way Botticelli, or, in this case Saad, handles the female body? - Apologize to the class.
- For what? Degrassi has a policy on nudity, which you've disregarded.
So Zig can get naked for Maya, but when I do it for Saad, it's an issue? I didn't get naked for it.
[murmuring.]
- Wait, did you? - [scoffs.]
Like you'd care.
- It's not the same thing.
- Why not? - Because your breasts are exposed.
- [Esme.]
So are Zig's.
I think you're the one who owes me an apology, Madame Jean-Aux.
- [scoffs.]
- Degrassi also has a policy on equal rights.
If Maya and Zig don't get in trouble, neither should we.
Fine.
You're right.
Everyone should be treated equally.
Detention for all four of you.
- Happy now, Ms.
Song? - As a clam.
[all laughing.]
[cheering.]
[indistinct chatter.]
[both laughing.]
- So? Any back pain? - No, it's amazing! - I wanna go again.
Can we go again? - You already bounced? How'd you get to the front of the line so fast? - Some guy let me cut.
- [Lola chuckles.]
That's, uh, quite the development.
How's the cotton candy line? Twenty minutes? - [groans.]
- That's like an eternity.
- Uh, here, take mine.
- Wow, really? Why? Uh, because we're gonna line up for the bouncy, uh - Uh - [chuckles.]
[stammers.]
Goodbye.
[chuckles.]
First you cut the line, now you get free cotton candy.
Told you that bra would change your life.
Wait.
That that wasn't because of my boobs.
Of course it was.
Did you not notice Baaz kept staring at them? - Ugh.
- [chuckles.]
Uh, can we go? What about jousting? Um, I'd rather just hang out, me and you.
- If that's okay.
- More than okay.
[sighs.]
Second day back and I'm already in detention for something I didn't do.
And yet, Maya got a get-out-of-jail-free card.
Big surprise.
Don't act like this is her fault.
You're the one who got naked for some guy for no reason.
- I didn't ask for that.
- Yeah, but you didn't stop her.
- Why do you always get so crazy? - [Esme scoffs.]
I'm the crazy one? Not Maya, the one who tried to kill herself? - She's trying to get better.
- She's so selfish! She was sick, Esme.
Of course you'd take her side.
She could've done it somewhere else, anywhere else, and I wouldn't have been the one to find her.
Whatever.
Maybe I should kill myself, 'cause I can't get the image of her limp body out of my head.
Might as well, it runs in my family anyways.
[Maya chuckles.]
[chuckles.]
Fruit to Go? They're my favorite.
Which you know 'cause you've been talking to my mom about my return.
I just wanna help ease you back into school.
Make sure that you're not overwhelmed.
And I'm here - [chuckles.]
- anytime you need to talk.
Thanks.
Mmm.
Still getting used to the special treatment.
You'll actually serve the detention next time, I promise.
It's not just that.
Friends, too.
Everybody has feelings about me coming back.
- Like what? - Worry.
Sometimes guilt.
[sighs.]
I feel like I owe them all an apology or something.
I'm sure, mostly, they're just happy that you're alive.
Yeah.
- I am, too.
- [chuckles softly.]
When I think about last semester, it's like all that stuff happened to a completely different person.
I guess that's a good thing.
My sister struggles with depression and she always describes it as a veil something that gets between her real self and the world.
Yeah, that's exactly how it feels.
Uh Oh, she's doing great.
- [sighs.]
- Has been for a long time.
When I find myself dipping, I just think about friends and family Oh, and SoCalArt.
- University would be cool.
- Well, they'd be lucky to have you.
Can I go to the funfair? After all, I'm the reason they're having it, right? [both chuckle.]
[upbeat music playing.]
[Frankie.]
Don't call me delusional, Lo.
Jonah said "hi" to me this morning.
You guys broke up, like, six weeks ago.
Yeah, but the spark's still there.
[chuckles softly.]
And no face or headshots, people.
I think he wants to get back together.
[chuckles.]
[Jonah.]
Okay, people, first one to knock the other off wins.
All right, any takers? I'll give it a shot.
- [girl.]
Come on, Grace! - Okay.
[Jonah sighs.]
[grunts.]
Grace! Chill! It's for fun.
Nothing about this is fun.
Grace, what is going on? Frankie thinks you're getting back together.
So? I don't want to be with Frankie.
No, you just want to make sure she's happy.
But me? Who cares, right? Grace, I fell for you when I was with another girl.
Okay? That is complicated.
So how long are we gonna sneak around? Another month? Prom? Until I die? I'm not gonna be your moped.
I promise you that is not what this is.
Promises are for suckers.
[sighs.]
[Zig sighs.]
You're not, um You're not seriously thinking of killing yourself, are you? Who knows? I'm crazy, right? I'm so sorry that I said that.
But maybe you're right.
I don't know.
After we found Maya You've been thinking about your mom? She looked the exact same when I found her.
- I've been having nightmares again.
- I had no idea.
Because you're always with her.
I can't stop because 'Cause it's my fault.
Your fault? We saved her.
Yeah, but I kept pushing her away.
What if she didn't make it? Then that would've been on Saad.
What? He was the last person who saw her the night of the play.
Opened the door to the roof for her, basically gave her an invitation.
Plus, he did all those creepy photos with her.
If anyone should've done anything, it was him.
But he let her get sicker and sicker.
- He knew there was something wrong.
- But he didn't stop her.
Yeah.
He did nothing.
She might have been totally okay if it wasn't for that guy.
- [upbeat music playing.]
- [indistinct chatter.]
[Jonah on mic.]
Hi, hi.
Is this thing on? [music stops.]
Oh, okay, look, if I was a better musician, I'd probably have something prepared, but when all else fails, improv, right? Okay.
There's this girl Who is a handful No.
No.
No, no, no, no.
She's a dark cloud, yeah In a blue sky She's as stubborn as a bull But she puts a twinkle in my eye [chuckles softly.]
Nice shirt.
Grace Cardinal will you be my totally public, not-so-secret, completely-out-in-the-open girlfriend? [sighs.]
[students cheering.]
Ever do this again, you're a dead man.
All right.
I brought you some sports bras.
They'll provide more coverage than the ones you returned.
Do you have anything that'll make your breasts disappear? We do have binders.
Would you like to try one? [sighs.]
Sure.
You still at the car, Esme? Okay.
Yup, okay.
I'll, uh, see you soon.
[camera shutter clicking.]
[Zig.]
Do you even feel bad? You could have stopped her.
- Stay away from me.
- No.
No, not unless you promise to stay away from Maya and Esme.
Why would I want anything to do with your crazy girlfriend? She's not crazy.
You don't know anything about her.
Except she's seriously messed up.
How many other guys has she gotten naked for while you were together? Yeah, you're not in such a hurry now, are you? Give that back! [Zig grunts.]
- What did you do? - [grunts.]
[grunting.]
[panting.]
[electronic music playing.]
