Departure (2019) s01e04 Episode Script

Sabotage

- Previously on Departure.
- Is everything okay? Can you hear me?
God help me, I think he
crashed that plane on purpose.
- A flight simulator.
- He planned the whole thing.
He said: "Maybe it would be better
for everyone if I just disappeared."
There is always value
to be found in good assets.
Mom went to investigate
his company a few years ago
and my dad said he made
our lives a living hell.
Bartok might've killed everybody
to shut 'em up. Don't you care?
It's closer to the edge.
And if it falls, we're going
to lose the flight recorders.
There's a company laying cable
in the area. They have a sub:
- Bartok International.
- No. Bad idea.
Nonetheless, I'd like
to meet with Bartok.
There's nothing else in range.
It wasn't an accident.
Gavin wasn't taking his meds.
- Does AJ know?
- How do I tell him
that his father killed himself
and tried to kill me?
That's not where the nurse
puts the needle. Oof!
I don't know how I'm gonna
tell her that her father is dead.
Maybe you should wait.
I think she might notice he's
suddenly missing, don't you?
She's weak. She needs rest.
You just want her stable so
you can keep interrogating her.
Yeah, I do.
Don't you think she's had enough trauma?
I brought the director of MI5
up to speed about our discovery
of our pilot's secret playhouse.
I've also worked up
a rough draft press release.
Pilot suicide. It's the only
conclusion the TSIB can reach.
Hm.
Donovan's flight simulator
is relatively simple to use.
That's what makes it
so popular with pilots.
- And gamers.
- It's the same flight 716 took.
Yeah. See here?
This program marks the spot
where Gander control
hands over to Shanwick.
- The exact same flight path?
- That bastard planned
everything down to the last detail.
Now, Donovan made first contact
with Shanwick at 35,000 feet.
But he missed the second check
at three zero west.
Here, he initiates a sharp right turn.
Well, that's right
over the trench, isn't it?
- About 100 miles short of it.
- But that is where he's aiming for.
Then he makes a rapid descent.
He left four different versions
of this dive on the simulator.
- So, he was practising.
- The first three simulations
are so steep, he loses control
and he crashes.
Well, isn't that the point?
I don't think so.
Because at that angle of descend,
the ocean should have
been filled with debris.
Yeah, but we haven't found any.
Why? Because he decided
to level off at 150 feet.
We're thinking that he wanted
to land the aircraft
in one piece and have it sink.
Lost forever. Just like Malaysia.
- No closure for the families.
- No. But it protects
the insurance payouts
for his dependents,
so long as it doesn't
look like suicide.
- [SCREAMING]
- Maddy, it's okay. It's okay.
It's okay. You're safe,
you're safe. It's okay.
It's okay. It's okay.
You're safe. It's okay. It's okay.
[SOBBING]
Mr. Bartok, I, uh
What is that?
I use Caravan tea leaves
for a nice strong zavarka.
Hm.
It's good.
But can we talk about why I'm here?
Your boss, Kendra Malley.
She cost me a lot of
money, did you know that?
No.
My company had a small problem
with one of my helicopters.
It had, uh, a slight, uh
- Yaw?
- Mm.
Ms. Malley was the investigator.
She discovered
a mechanical failure that was
undetected by maintenance.
Grounded my entire fleet for weeks.
It cost me a a lot.
Would have cost you more
if someone had died.
And now she sends you,
begging for my submersible.
I wouldn't call it begging.
Oh, well, then you are not
doing it right.
Everything on the flight simulator goes
against Captain Donovan.
His second insurance policy, his
complica the fact that he confessed
suicidal thoughts to his friend.
- Granted, there is a compelling case.
- An overwhelming case, Kendra!
That only the black
boxes can corroborate.
You've already blown
your chance at finding those.
- Madelyn Strong has given us a name.
- A name?
- From a delirious victim?
- Yeah, well, delirious or not,
she is our only eyewitness.
Dom's texted. Madelyn Strong's awake.
- Hi, Kendra.
- AJ. I finally reached you.
You're not in Edinburgh, are you?
It's nice to hear from you too.
Police came looking for you last night.
Ah, shit.
They've got a video of you
vandalizing Pavel Bartok's plane.
- What the hell is going on?
- Well, you know what he's like.
You should be investigating him.
He's a mass murderer.
Is all of this coming from Sophia?
AJ, please.
Please, AJ, darling,
will you just come home?
Now I know you've been lying to me.
Hi. Did you manage to get the sub?
- No, but
- Did he say anything about
his plane being vandalized?
No. He's open to discussion but he'll
only talk to you personally about it.
- Just don't go without a chaperone.
- Great.
- Thanks.
- No problem.
It didn't go well with AJ.
I don't think he's in Edinburgh.
I don't even think his
girlfriend's with him.
Well, I can get Gibbons to put
an alert out on AJ and the car.
Thanks. It would help. Does
Madelyn know about her father?
No, not yet. Ali's agreed to hold off.
- He's not happy about it, though.
- Yeah. I can imagine.
Look, I checked the CCTV footage
in Maddy's room.
It cut out for two minutes.
- A glitch?
- Maybe.
But it happened conveniently
when Derek had his heart attack.
I'm gonna review the footage
from all the cameras on the ward.
Okay. And stay on top of the
autopsy results. Let me know
- if anything crops up.
- I'm on it.
Hi, Madelyn.
I'm Kendra Malley.
Yes, I remember. Um,
am I the only one you found?
There was a little girl.
I think her name was Stella?
Thank you. You'll be okay.
Madelyn,
let's let's start from the beginning.
What happened after you got
onto the plane? Was there
Was there anything unusual?
It was a normal flight.
Sorry.
After around three hours,
I got up to go to the loo.
[SCREAMING]
Crew members were
trying to get into the cockpit.
Open up!
Was, um Was this one of the people
that was trying to get
into the cockpit?
You let me in! Everything okay?
Yes.
What about this man?
Yes. But later.
- He came later.
- Oh. Hassan Esmaili.
Christ, are we back on terrorism?
Uh, could he have been trying to help?
He is a decorated air force pilot.
- Iranian air force.
- Point is he jumped in
after the pilot locked himself
in the cockpit.
So our eyewitness
corroborates pilot suicide?
Hm.
I reviewed the hospital
security footage.
See how he moves?
He knows the location of every camera.
Who is this guy?
Someone who knows
what he's doing. Here
That's our best shot of him.
I'll get Janet to run
facial recognition,
but if this guy's a professional,
he's likely not a UK national.
I'd be shocked if he
showed up in the database.
Here, watch what happens
when he goes into Madelyn's room.
See?
Camera cuts out.
Two minutes later, Ali enters,
sees Madelyn in distress and
Derek on the floor, dead.
So, was Derek the target,
or just in the wrong place
at the wrong time?
It's got to be Madelyn.
Yeah, but why would somebody
want to kill her?
What does she know?
You don't have to answer any more
questions, Maddy. You're too tired.
No, it's okay.
Where's Dad?
He was here, wasn't he?
I wasn't dreaming it?
No. No, you weren't dreaming.
You ready?
- There was some sort of explosion.
- Explosion?
Do you remember which side
of the aircraft?
Yes, the hole was near the front,
on the right side.
- Starboard side. Theo, pull it up.
- Yeah.
Right there.
And your escape, Maddy:
how did you survive?
I don't know how, but I was
able to get back to my seat.
Some time passed,
and there was this
this man
Everything was black
The ocean, the sky.
Madelyn,
tell me about the man
that fell with you on the raft.
I tried to get to him,
but he was already dead.
And he went under.
Can you describe him for me?
He was sitting across
the aisle from me on the plane.
He was on his laptop the whole
time. Playing a game.
Daniel Hoffman.
[PHONE CHIMING]
Yes, that's him.
I remember he got very upset.
And that's when he started
talking about Moses.
God dammit, Moses!
Jesus.
Did he tell you who Moses was?
No.
[NEWS]: Ten Downing Street
refuses to give further comment
In other news, BGA stocks
continue to decline
as a shipment of one hundred
aircraft to Saudi Arabia
and China sits in limbo,
awaiting the outcome
of the TSIB investigation.
Look up, mate.
So you tagged Bartok's plane?
Yeah.
You think we're stupid?
That video's been circulating.
For all we know, you're
working with the cops.
Well, only an idiot
shows his face online.
Yeah, I got the full video here
if you want to see it.
Just come on outside
and I'll show it to you.
Show it to me now.
Come on in.
[DOOR BUZZING]
The Real McCoy. Well done, mate.
Welcome to the X house.
- So what's the plan for Bartok?
- Ah! He's a profiteer
and a fascist pig. We're
gonna make him smell like one.
This is where the magic happens.
We need to get everything
we can on Daniel Hoffman.
And check if the blood on the
raft matches his DNA. I have to go.
- You're done then? You finished with her?
- I have to go.
- Ali
- You got what you wanted,
now I have to tell her her dad's dead.
Look, do you want
me to come in with you?
No.
It's just
I only ever wanted to make her happy
and now I have to go and tell her this.
That's messed up.
[SORROWFUL MUSIC]
Excuse me, Mr. Holl?
Mrs. Donovan.
I have something I need to tell you.
This way.
I lied before.
When you asked me about
all my phone calls to Richard,
just before he left New York.
I said there was nothing wrong,
but we were fighting.
I knew he was lying to me.
It was making me crazy,
so I told him "Don't come home!"
I told him I wish you were dead!
And how did he respond?
He said, "Maybe you'll get your wish."
[SOBBING]
Take a whiff.
- What is that?
- You don't want to know.
Let's just say it's going
to take a few days for Bartok
to get that stink off. What's that?
It's a live feed from the TSIB.
I'm hoping to hear
some shit about Bartok
- and Flight 716.
- That's brilliant!
- How'd you manage that?
- Uh, I installed
a Remote Access Trojan
on one of their machines.
That's level 4 hacker shit.
I'm impressed, mate.
Yeah, well, my dad
was a computer engineer,
so we used to design games together.
My dad was a cop. Spent
his entire life thinking
he was protecting the little
guy. Never woke up to the fact
he was really just propping up
bastards like Bartok.
- You sure Bartok's in town?
- We're sure.
We've been watching him. He
leaves the same time every night.
We'll get him. And you
are gonna video the whole thing.
[KENDRA]: AJ, please come home,
okay? We can talk.
Please, darling, just
tell me where you are.
Good. We're rolling, we're rolling.
- Thank you.
- Is it true Captain Donovan
planned the whole thing?
- I'm sorry?
- We have a source, says Donovan
bought a flight simulator
six weeks before Flight 716.
- What did you find on it?
Was he practising the crash?
Did he plan it all out?
Why is the TSIB hiding evidence?
Don't victims' families
have a right to know
- about the flight simulator?
- Excuse me, please.
- Hey.
- [DOOR BUZZING]
The leak had to come
from someone on this team.
- We need to step up security.
- I mean, I can get the IT guys
to start tracking some of our
phone calls,
but are you sure you want to do this?
The tabloids are promoting
their own theories.
How long before the public
starts to believe them?
It's already started.
Yeah, well, then do what you need to do.
- Kendra!
- Yeah.
- Did you find anything on Hoffman?
- Oh, yes. The DNA checks out.
- He was the man in the raft.
- And were you able to find
any link to anyone named Moses?
No. But Hoffman did work in aviation.
- Really? Doing what?
- I'm not sure yet,
but I did run his face through a
social media recognition software
and this popped up.
It's a BGA staffer's page
teambuilding exercise and
there's Hoffman on the right.
Right, so at the very least
we know that he had friends
who worked in the airline.
Well, I've already put a call
in their HR department.
Levi, this is great work.
- Do you guys have a second?
- Yeah.
Okay. Madelyn said there was
a breach on the starboard side.
So I went back and I reviewed
the underwater footage.
At first I thought it was a shadow,
but these shadows move,
and that dark spot?
- It stays the same.
- It's a hole,
which means Maddy was right.
But she said that that happened
before the plane dived.
Well, you can't expect
a coherent chronology from someone
who's suffered that much trauma.
Fair enough, fair enough.
Then, how does this hole
square up with pilot suicide?
Could the pilot have gotten
to the avionics bay?
Yeah, through the trapdoor
of the cockpit.
But to do what? Plant a device?
Why would he go through
all that trouble? He could have
crashed the plane any time.
Ah, none of this makes sense.
The heart showed signs of age,
but no obvious indication
of pump failure
or ventricular dilation.
- Should there be with a heart attack?
- Not necessarily.
Numerous things can lead
to a heart attack.
Uh arrhythmia, viral infection
What about this bruising
here? Is it post or ante mortem?
Ante mortem, but
consistent with the crash
team's attempt to revive him.
There is one thing
This puncture.
Looks like he was given an epi,
but there's no record of that happening.
So, he could have been
injected with something?
How long for a full tox panel?
I'll follow up with pathology.
Likely a few days.
- Make it one, if you would.
- All right.
Thank you.
- What was that about?
- I'm sorry, Ali.
Nothing I'm at liberty to discuss.
Right.
What a surprise. All you lot do
is keep us in the dark.
Take it easy, Ali.
When's the last time
you got some sleep?
Get some rest.
Maddy needs you.
Can you let me in?
[KENDRA]: And a fire in the
entertainment system could've
knocked them both out.
Derek Strong has a needle
wound in his neck.
You think he tried to stop that
orderly from attacking Madelyn?
Yeah.
- And he paid the price for it.
- Shit.
There's nothing yet on AJ or the car.
But I'll let you know
as soon as I hear.
Thanks.
- Should we tell this to Howard?
- Yeah.
Thanks.
He's in here.
Derek Strong has a puncture wound
to his neck, consistent with a syringe.
And there That's the unidentified
orderly exiting Madelyn's room
just moments before
they discovered his body.
You seriously suggesting
the man was murdered?
Yes.
There was a CCTV camera in
Madelyn's room. Did it show anything?
- No, it cut out.
- Right.
Or it was tampered with.
Howard, I think this is a
matter for the police. I mean,
it's way beyond the remit of the TSIB.
But you said that the doctor
thought Derek Strong had
died of a heart attack.
- Yes, initially, but
- But what?
I think Madelyn
was the true target. She must
have seen something onboard,
something incriminating
maybe she doesn't even know it.
Yeah, but this is
just the sort of thing
that feeds conspiracy theories.
Did you hear the last one was
that Putin shot down the aircraft
to kill the surgeon who'd taken
out his wrong kidney?
- I trust the surgeon was on the plane?
- Yeah.
Howard, you said that you were
looking into finding us
- another submersible?
- I'm talking to the Navy
ours, the Irish,
the Icelandic. No luck.
I've got a call into the Yanks,
but it could be weeks.
Yeah, but we have, what?
Two, three days, max,
before the wreckage
slips into the trench.
After that, there is no technology
on this planet that's gonna be able
to retrieve those black boxes.
There is, uh there is one company
that is laying new undersea
cable across the Atlantic
Oh, no. You can't be serious.
Bartok has the equipment
and he's in the area!
Bartok should have been
deported long ago.
Yeah, well, I would make a
deal with the devil if it meant
that I could get hold
of those black boxes.
Well, find some other way.
It's a good time, I'm alone. Kendra
She's got nothing.
Yeah, well, she's dragging her
feet on the pilot suicide angle,
but don't worry, she'll soon
understand she's got no choice
- but to go along with it.
- Sorry
I forgot my laptop.
- Kendra.
- Hm?
I've been chasing BGA to see if
Hoffman ever did any work for them.
They pretty much
told me to get stuffed.
Get their head of HR on
the ph no, you know what?
Call Moreau's office tell him
I'm coming over to see him.
- Right now?
- Yeah.
Great.
[LAPTOP CHIMING]
Kendra, she's got nothing.
Yeah, well, she's dragging her
feet on the whole pilot suicide angle,
but don't worry,
she'll soon understand she's got
no choice but to go along with it.
That was filmed in Howard's
office off of a webcam.
Shit. That's that's off my computer.
I was the one that was hacked!
Let me see this.
Has Janet been forcing this whole
pilot suicide theory to throw us off?
- Levi's an advocate, too.
- But Janet
Janet was there on the scene.
She found the bloody key to the
lock-up with the flight simulator.
Okay, all right, look: check out
everything that she's done and touched.
And see if there are any
other computers hacked.
Yeah.
Let me see this again.
You brought a spy
into this investigation.
Well, I can handle it.
You've got enough on your plate.
Mr. Moreau will see you now.
Ah, Miss Malley.
I'm so sorry to have kept you. Please.
How are things going
on the investigation?
Can I get you something to drink?
Uh, no, thank you. Look,
I'm here because your, uh,
your HR department is refusing
to release the personnel files
- of a
- Daniel Hoffman?
- Yes.
- Yes, I did get a note
from legal about that.
I gather the problem isn't us
so much as the privacy laws.
- Yes, but Mr. Hoffman is dead.
- Miss Malley,
I'm on your side,
which is why I overruled
our lawyers and the HR department.
Uh, here we are.
Everything we have on Daniel Hoffman.
Right.
So, uh, did you know him?
Daniel Hoffman?
No, I've never heard
of him before today.
I mean, we have literally
hundreds of people working in
the IT systems and the software.
I gather he was more
of a contract employee.
Right, well, thank you.
Oh, one other thing.
Did you know if Mr. Hoffman
had an associate or a colleague
by the name of Moses?
The only Moses I know was
the one who crossed the Red Sea.
- I look forward to hearing from you.
- Of course.
[NEWS]: Rumours continue to circulate
that the captain of Flight 716
Anonymous sources tell us
he even had a flight simulator
- with the entire crash planned out.
- Meanwhile,
lone survivor Madelyn Strong
is fast becoming a hero
on social media with messages
of support flooding in
In the markets, BGA stock
continued to take a hit.
- Any word on AJ yet?
- No, not yet.
I've just got to make a call. Gillian.
Kendra?
- Has AJ called you?
- No.
Why? What's wrong?
Well, he said that he was in Edinburgh,
but I don't think he's there.
I don't know where he is.
And last time I spoke to him,
he just seemed very angry.
I think I should come over, Kendra.
- I'll book my ticket right now.
- Okay.
OK. Uh, send me the flight
details, yeah? Thanks.
You sure you're up for this?
Yeah.
She'll go along with it, trust me.
That was a private conversation
between me and my boss,
- the director of MI5.
- About?
He wanted to know where
the investigation was heading and
I gave him my personal opinion.
You said that you checked
with Homeland Security to see
if Captain Littlefield actually
met Donovan in New York.
I have a friend who works
there, John Rathman.
- He says no request was made.
- Not by me, directly.
- I went through departmental liaison.
- We checked with New York
for a paper trail. There is none.
Levi said he's been trying to
get hold of Captain Littlefield,
but he seems to have
disappeared off the map.
- Friend of yours from MI5?
- Howard
What the hell's going on here?
That's what we're trying
to establish, Miss Freeh.
- Right.
- For all we know, you planted
that flight simulator.
- Oh, don't be ridiculous!
- Well, a ruling of pilot suicide
would completely eliminate the
aircraft manufacturer's liability.
So, who are you working for, Ms. Freeh?
MI5 or Windsor Aeronautics?
Howard, are you seriously
entertaining this nonsense?
You came to me
with a draft press release
about pilot suicide.
I nixed it, of course.
You leaked the information about
Donovan's flight simulator, didn't you?
- That wasn't me.
- You have seriously
compromised this investigation.
Now these two gentlemen will
escort you off the premises.
Good day, Miss Freeh.
I don't work for you, Howard.
Thank God.
Theo. How are we doing with
getting that hacker out of the system?
As best as I can tell,
it didn't breach the network.
So far yours is the only
computer that's been infected.
- Just my luck, eh?
- Yeah.
- Any news on Bartok's sub?
- Not yet.
[TENSE MUSIC]
You're certain it was him?
Thank you for opening my email.
So? Do they know how
our call was recorded?
Apparently, it was Malley's son.
The little shit gained
access to our webcam.
The police are searching for
him, but we've got our own man
- out looking for him.
- Oi.
It's on.
It's time to stink up Bartok's car.
[KENDRA]: Hi. I'm, uh,
I'm on my way to Bartok's.
It's not my favourite idea, but
I'll let you know how it goes.
It's good to finally
meet you Miss Malley.
Likewise.
Please.
Rioja is your preference,
if I'm not mistaken?
Oh, I, ah, don't know
whether I should be flattered or
creeped out that you know that.
- [LAUGHING]
- But you are mistaken.
I took up whiskey a year ago.
Oh.
No, please
For old times' sake.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC]
Get it done.
You know, I must confess something.
When you first issued
that report against me
five years ago, I was enraged.
I thought, who is this woman
who has the nerve to disrupt
my supply chain? I threw up
every roadblock I could,
and when my lawyers finally said
that there was nothing more
I can do, I fired them.
You see, I don't like to lose.
Who does, Mr. Bartok?
So how does it feel to be
one of the very few people
- to go up against me and win?
- Well, to tell you the truth,
I, uh I haven't really
thought about it.
- It's one of my smaller cases.
- Ha!
[CHUCKLING] You live up
to your reputation.
I'm just doing my job, Mr. Bartok.
[BEEPING]
They call me 'the personification
of disaster capitalism'.
So, I loan you my submersible,
and what's in it for me?
Well, I think your reputation could do
with a little rehabilitation
right now, wouldn't you say?
And Howard Lawson,
he supports this proposal?
- He doesn't know.
- Well, now I'm interested.
He'll be out soon. Make sure you stand
far enough back. That's no stink
bomb you put in the back of his car.
What do you mean?
We're gonna blow
this bastard up for real.
Kendra! Move away from the car!
[SIRENS]
- You all right?
- Yeah.
AJ was here. Just before
the bomb exploded.
We have to find him.
If we give them AJ's name and
description, they'll arrest him.
I know. But at least he'll be safe.
[TENSE MUSIC]
Andrew Julian Malley,
- Caucasian, blond, male.
- Date of birth?
March 4th, 2001. Six foot two;
weighs about twelve stone.
We have a suspect description
for one of the assailants.
[CELL PHONE BUZZING]
AJ. Where are you?
[PANTING]
I'm sorry. I screwed up!
I screwed up.
- They're after me.
- Who who's after you?
AJ, just tell me where you are,
okay? And I'll come and get you.
[GUNSHOT]
- Christ, they're tracking my phone.
- AJ?
[GUNSHOT]
[INDISTINCT VOICES]
