Departure (2019) s01e06 Episode Script

Endgame

- Previously on Departure.
- Moses
- Who's Moses?
- I want an assurance
that the name Hassan Esmaili
will stay secret.
Did you find anything on Hoffman?
He was the man in the raft and
Hoffman did work in aviation.
We were safety consultants,
part of various red teams
that tested for
aircraft vulnerabilities.
Kendra! I'm sorry. I screwed up.
- They're after me.
- AJ?
I know this is hard,
but you'll need to step away.
Everyone, by now you've all heard
about Kendra. Levi will take her place.
Do they know how our call was recorded?
Apparently, it was Malley's son.
I sent a Trojan to one
of your email groups.
You clicked on the bloody attachment.
British Global Air has never,
and will never,
- compromise on safety.
- Moreau, you world class bullshitter.
- That's Hassan Esmaili
- Bloody Mossad agent.
What's he doing in the captain's seat?
Why did you leak this
without consulting me?
Did you even try to think
through the consequences?
- You broke our deal.
- Not me.
- Janet Freeh.
- If the man in the cockpit
is identified as Hassan Esmaili
then operations will be exposed
and lives put at risk. Janet promised us
- she'd keep this under wraps.
- I know. She's desperate.
- Why?
- MI5 must know
that the black box data
will debunk any sort
of pilot suicide theory.
Now they're trying
- to shift the blame to Hassan.
- Terrorism is the public's worst fear.
MI5 can take over and trust me,
- they'll handle it.
- Oh,
like you handled the flight simulator?
Or, uh, your surprise witness,
Mister Littlefield?
You were supposed to control
your team, Howard.
We wouldn't be having this conversation
if you'd stopped them
from finding the black boxes.
Ah! We have no idea
what's on those black boxes.
There's no clue that they will
support terrorism.
It's your job to make it fit, Howard.
I had Janet leak the photo.
An Iranian pilot bringing down
a British airliner?
Do you want to start a bloody war?
That's not our concern here,
Howard. We need you to build
a credible terrorism case.
It's in our best interests
to offload to MI5.
They have a history of discretion.
If you'll excuse me.
Weak link.
Why would we help you?
Look, people went to
great lengths to cover up
what crashed Flight 716.
Now they'll use Hassan
to bury the truth, even if
it costs your agents' lives.
We'll keep an eye on her.
Ah, well done, Nadia!
You've truly gone above and beyond.
Ah, Theo ready these
for data collection.
- Yeah.
- You must be exhausted.
- Ah, no! Howard, I'm fi
- But don't-don't worry.
He'll-he'll handle it.
He'll handle it. You rest.
It's okay. Good job.
- Thanks.
- All right.
So, are they functioning?
Uh, they're still drying.
Some of the connections
are definitely corroded, so,
uh, could affect the audio.
Will you hook it up for a test, please?
Uh, well, it's-it's still too soon to
Oh, just a wee one.
Okay.
Flaps. Two sets, two indicated.
Two sets, two indicated. Check.
That's at JFK just before takeoff.
Well done.
Thank you.
Good. Good.
Ladies and gentlemen,
this is your co-pilot Arthur Delaney.
Please ensure
that your electronic devices
are turned off
as we prepare for departure.
Thank you and enjoy your flight
Do you have your phone?
What's wrong?
We need to call Kendra.
Hello?
- Moses isn't a person.
- What?
It's a thing.
A thing
M-O-S-I-S.
- MOSIS. It's an acronym.
- For what?
I don't know but Maddy said
Hoffman kept saying:
"MOSIS did it."
Could he have meant software,
or some sort of virus that he planted?
Maybe. But she also said
Hoffman was panicked, afraid.
Doesn't really vibe
with someone who's trying
- to crash a plane.
- True.
Look, I'm going to circle back
to Stefon Tark at King's
and see what he knows about
this MOSIS. Meet you there?
I can't. Got to stay here
at Scotland Yard.
I've shown them the evidence
that Derek Strong was murdered,
but it's going to take
a damn sight more convincing
to get them to investigate
255 aeroplane passengers.
- Got it. Keep me posted, yeah?
- Kendra, wait!
Yeah?
They've pulled a body
out of the Thames last night.
- What?
- Our orderly.
The same man who tried
to kill you and AJ.
I think they're trying
to snip off all the loose ends.
I've arranged
for police protection of AJ.
You need to let me do the same for you.
Yeah. Of course.
You stay safe.
We have had to endure
the outrageous speculation
that the man we loved intentionally
crashed Flight 716. We never believed
he was capable of such
an evil and cowardly act.
And with the publication of this photo,
the rest of the world now knows, too.
- Mister Tark?
- Ms. Malley.
So why didn't you tell me about MOSIS?
Ah I haven't heard
that name in years. I'm sorry,
- I didn't think it
- It's an acronym.
- What does it stand for?
- Multi-user
Onboard Smart Interface System.
It was BGA's in-house build.
The airline wanted proprietary rights
- over the software.
- Okay. And-and what does it do?
Oh, MOSIS was an impressive programme.
It provided the basis for the
current in-flight entertainment system.
I think they call it, uh 'NAVI' now?
Hey.
- What'd you want to show me?
- This.
- You're a gamer?
- Yes. And so was Hoffman.
Actually, the only
online presence we found
- was his gamer name HoffMaster69.
- Right.
But, when his flat was searched,
no gaming console was found
on the inventory list.
- Janet could have destroyed it.
- That's what I thought.
But then I decided
to follow him anyways.
What? He's online? Hoffman?
Yeah.
Hey. You've got impeccable timing.
I'm putting you on speaker.
MOSIS is Multi-user Onboard
Smart Interface System.
I think that Hoffman found
some kind of vulnerability
- and the airline shut him down.
- Kendra,
Hoffman's avatar is active right now.
- What?
- If Hoffman were arguing
with BGA over a vulnerability
in the aircraft's system,
he must have backed up
his findings somewhere
and consoles contain
pretty massive hard drives.
All right, well, then we need to
find that. Coordinate with Dom.
I've lost control!
Let me in!
There's all kinds
of interference in the audio
and these are the only
clear segments so far.
I'm in control! I've
deployed the spoiler.
Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar!
Allahu Akbar!
Allahu Akbar The Jihadist war cry.
It's a it's a prayer.
I think it means
- "God is greater".
- It was Hassan all along.
Um, I-I think we need to run
electronic filtering to try
- and recover the missing audio.
- The evidence
is too compelling, Levi.
You'd do well to get on board.
- Keep him engaged. We're close.
- I'm trying to.
- We've got him!
- Where is he?
- Sending the address now.
- Here, let me take over.
Yeah, yeah.
What have you got, Nadia?
The I.P. address is coming
from an apartment on Ringstone Court.
Isn't that where Hoffman lived?
Yes. But it's coming
from a different flat. 409.
Okay. Well, look, um
I'm near there now.
Um, I'll meet you there, okay?
Thanks. Change of plan!
Can you take me
to Ringstone Court, please?
What's that address again?
Ringstone Court.
Hi. Just you in there?
It's not really your business, is it?
Where'd you get that console?
- The shop.
- That's funny.
'Cause your neighbour,
Mr. Hoffman, reported it stolen.
- You a cop?
- No.
But a lot of my friends are.
We used to play games together.
I told my mum he let me
borrow the console.
- How'd you get it?
- Spare key.
My mum's the porter here.
Where is he, Mr. Hoffman?
Here. Why don't you pull up the menu?
Okay.
It's got nothing to do with the game.
Just old rubbish, really.
Yeah?
Well, it's worth something
to me. Thanks.
Why couldn't you have
just gone along with it?
I know all about Howard and you.
Howard? God! He was
barely middle management.
Yeah? And what are you?
You tried to kill my son.
I still might. I'll take that.
- Kendra!
- Aaah!
She's dead.
She must have fallen on it.
Some accidents should not
be investigated, Ms. Malley.
- Mum? Kendra?
- AJ.
What happened to you?
What happened to you?
Are you okay? Are you okay?
Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar!
Allahu Akbar.
Well, all this is good, Howard.
- Very good.
- Mm.
Well, there's more we can use.
My associate, Mr. Holl,
is back at HQ building the case.
- Can he be trusted?
- Oh! He's malleable.
Ah, I'll send him over to, uh,
brief you when he's done.
And, uh, we should be able
to hand the investigation over to MI5
- by end of day tomorrow.
- Excellent.
Your good work won't go unrecognized.
Care to remind Janet of that?
Ah.
- You haven't heard.
- Heard?
Janet's dead, Howard.
Some sort of dreadful fall.
It's terrible.
Hi.
- Oh, my God. Are you all right?
- Yeah. A few bumps and lumps,
but I'll be fine.
- You sure?
- The others are waiting.
- Does it work?
- Yeah. It's all still there.
All of Hoffman's files.
Even a video manifesto.
This is what got 255 people killed.
What are we going to do with it?
Well, if we take it to Levi,
can we trust him to keep it
- from Howard?
- I wouldn't chance it.
I've known Levi for years.
He stuck with pilot suicide
- because he believed it.
- He hasn't left Howard's side
- in days, Kendra.
- If we're taking on
all the money and influence
that BGA can muster,
we need to assume the worst.
Okay, look, I have an idea.
It's a long shot,
so if anybody wants out,
I completely understand.
- Are you ready?
- Yeah.
- You good?
- Okay. We're rolling.
Tell me what happened, Madelyn.
I'm very happy
that my submersible was able
to retrieve the Flight 716 black boxes.
I can only hope that their contents
will bring closure.
I almost killed that man.
You were duped, AJ.
- Like father like son.
- Hey.
Don't do this.
Why'd my birth mum leave?
Kendra never left.
She didn't run off.
Didn't give up on Dad.
Didn't give up on me.
She's the only one.
Tell her that.
Although the contents of
the black boxes from Flight 716
- have yet to be made public
- The finding
of unlawful interference
would mean that responsibility
- for Flight 716
- As a verdict of terrorism
could completely discharge
the airline from liability.
Well, I appreciate
the briefing, Mr. Holl.
- It's very good work.
- Thank you.
Now that we've determined
that terrorism is the cause,
all remaining evidence
will be handed over to MI5
and they'll finalize
the remaining investigation.
Yeah. I understand.
Now, there is something
I'd like to discuss with you
in confidence.
- Hm?
- My technicians tell me
they've discovered a vulnerability
in the aircraft's software
at the interface
- with the NAVI system.
- Oh. Is it a serious concern?
Think it could be.
I'd like to demonstrate it
for you and, um,
discuss remedial options
while keeping it out
of the final report.
- When?
- Today, if possible,
before we release the test craft
back to you?
Howard, Theo needs to see you
in the boardroom.
I'm afraid I'm pressed for time.
He's figured out how Hassan
triggered the explosion in the fuselage.
- Mr. Holl?
- Hi, Mr. Moreau. Over here.
Where's Theo?
What the devil are you playing at?
Who are you and what are you doing here?
Take a seat. I think you
will find this very informative.
Stop this plane.
- Stop this plane immediately!
- Please be seated, Mr. Moreau.
Captain's now ready for takeoff.
Are all your electronics switched off?
Is this
- some sort of sick joke?
- Oh, that's where your seat is.
That's where Madelyn Strong sat.
This is outrageous. Stand aside.
You really should stay, Howard.
- Why don't you have a seat?
- Yeah.
NAVI Pull up video manifesto.
Daniel Hoffman. Hired by you,
three years ago,
to test for vulnerabilities
within BGA's new in-flight
entertainment system.
And he found a vulnerability, all right.
- NAVI, play.
- A vulnerability exists
within all Windsor 950 aircraft
wherein an experienced hacker
could gain access to and override
the pilot's instruments
through the entertainment port,
effectively taking control
of the aircraft.
That's absurd.
Now, I have warned Ethan Moreau
of my findings
and he has failed to correct
this flaw. Mr. Moreau decided
that the cost of grounding his fleet
to rewrite a few lines of code
- was too great.
- This man is clearly deranged.
- Sh.
- And so now I am forced to act
as a whistleblower,
to safely demonstrate
this vulnerability on Flight 716
and to publicize Moreau's negligence.
You refused to remedy
that flaw in the software.
And that's the very flaw that
caused Flight 716 to go down.
It's why you had Janet Freeh
plant the flight simulator
so that she could put forward
a case for pilot suicide.
But when that failed,
you had Howard Lawson
push forward Hassan Esmaili
as the author
- of a terrorist attack.
- Howard Lawson is irrelevant.
Hassan's body was found in the cockpit.
His history, and the evidence
found on the black box
point to terror as the cause.
This will be an MI5-led
investigation now,
- so let's end this farce, shall we?
- We can't do that, Mr. Moreau.
The in-flight entertainment
has only just begun. NAVI
Play video Madelyn Strong.
I was on Flight 716.
I am the only survivor.
The movie cut out.
I asked him if his was out too,
but he didn't answer me
He was quite panicked.
He kept saying something like,
"This wasn't supposed to happen." and
"MOSIS, what have you done?"
I thought he was talking
about the game I saw him play.
I thought that by the time
I got back from the loo,
the entertainment system
would be working again.
That was the first time I saw the man
I now know to be Hassan Esmaili
There was a screen in front of me.
- I saw the word "MOSIS".
- NAVI, pause.
That's the name of the programme
that Hoffman tested
- for your airline.
- This is utter nonsense.
NAVI, play cockpit voice recording
at three hours, 40 minutes.
I've lost control of the aircraft!
- The controls are not responding!
- Captain!
Captain Donovan!
Is everything okay? Open up please!
I'm trying! The door won't open.
- Use the code!
- Code's not working! Open up.
After that, I saw Hassan again.
Hassan was banging on the door
and Captain Donovan let him in.
If Donovan let Hassan in,
- it's because the man deceived him.
- Is that right?
Well, thankfully, Scotland Yard's
digital forensics team
helped us clear up the audio
on the cockpit voice recording. NAVI
Play cockpit voice recording
at three hours, 42 minutes.
Captain, I'm a military trained pilot!
Let me in! I can help you!
I've lost control of the aircraft.
I have to go down below
- and reboot the computer.
- You might not make it back up.
- There isn't enough oxygen.
- Never mind that, can you fly?
Yes, I can. Now hurry!
It worked! I'm in control!
I'm in control.
I've deployed the spoilers.
I can get us out of the dive.
Come on!
Come on, come on!
Captain, the engines aren't coming back!
Captain!
The engines!
Allahu Akbar!
Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar!
You know what you're describing is both
- insane and impossible.
- Sorry. Is it?
In Hoffman's report, he laid it out,
how to do it step by step.
What are you doing?
I'm trying it. If it's impossible,
you have nothing to worry about.
At three hours, 36 minutes
into the flight,
there was a thrust differential
that caused the plane to jolt slightly.
Oh, Levi Holl did bring
Howard Lawson's attention to it,
but he just ignored it. I assume
that's down to you and
your airline's interests.
The one thing you can
assume about Lawson
is the only interests he'll
look after are his own.
At first the movement was negligible.
But then it happened again
and this time,
it was anything but slight.
Stop, please stop.
Stop! Bloody insane!
- NAVI, are you still with me?
- Hi.
- What can I help you with today?
- Resume video.
Hundreds of people are dead.
Men, women, mums, dads.
Children. The elderly.
They were seated all around me.
They were happy. Excited.
Off to see their-their loved ones.
And they didn't deserve this.
This didn't need to happen.
NAVI, pause.
After everything that
Madelyn Strong had survived,
you tried to kill her
and you killed her father.
Why, Mr. Moreau?
Look, I didn't kill anyone!
I'm really sorry about
what happened to those people
but all your theory proves
is that Hoffman
was the true terrorist.
A disgruntled former employee
who sought to punish British Global Air.
What's that?
Use a different man this time.
- It's fine.
- He didn't finish the job!
He will. I'll make sure of it.
Is that supposed to mean something?
Apparently it was Malley's kid.
The little shit gained
access to her webcam.
- The police is searching for him.
- But we'll find him first.
What? You don't approve?
It's not possible.
The evidence is compelling, Howard.
You'd do well to get on board.
I have no idea what
you're talking about.
Well, don't worry.
It's all on this USB. A video of you,
Howard and Janet discussing
the murder of Derek Strong
and the attempted murder of my son.
Howard's behind this nonsense, isn't he?
He's filled your heads with
lies to cover his own crimes.
Fasten your seatbelt, Mr. Moreau.
It's going to be a bumpy ride down.
I know you're not the architect of
this crime and cover-up, Howard.
But Moreau needs a scapegoat.
I'd like to discuss
the terms of my cooperation.
"Scotland Yard has
exposed the conspiracy
surrounding the Flight 716's tragedy
with the aid of TSIB
investigator Kendra Malley
- and her team."
- Did they spell my name right?
Kendra with a "C".
"The evidence suggesting pilot suicide
was fabricated and the voice
recordings from the cockpit
confirm that Captain Donovan
died in an heroic attempt
- to right his aircraft."
- Yeah.
I'm glad they put that one in.
"Donovan, along with
amateur pilot Harold Rossi,
struggled to regain control
of the aeroplane
and save the lives
of all those on board.
Whistleblower Daniel Hoffman
warned the airline
of the inflight vulnerability,
but his findings were suppressed.
The crisis has shaken Westminster
with the arrest of several
high-ranking members of MI5,
who are alleged to have
criminally conspired
with British Global Air CEO,
Ethan Moreau.
In the aftermath of the scandal,
both Saudi Arabia and China
have cancelled their purchase
of the 950 series."
Yeah. Nobody's going to like
that bit, trust me.
- Hi!
- Just coming from the Yard.
Think it's going to be all right, AJ.
Why do you say that?
Well, they nicked the fellow
who made the explosives.
And he confirmed that he used you.
Bartok also stepped up.
I think we're looking at no record
and just some community service.
Thanks.
Thanks, Dom.
- Did I miss the invitation?
- It's from Bartok.
Is it now?
"You won again, Miss Malley. Enjoy."
He's feeling generous.
He got very good press
- by lending us his submersible.
- Yeah, and it's good news
all around today.
Some white knight investors
stepped up to rescue Windsor Aeronautics
- and keep the 950s flying.
- Oh, my God!
You can only get that stuff at auction.
It's, like, a 5,000-pound bottle
of single malt scotch.
- Are you sure?
- Yeah.
I've tasted better.
No bombs today, Mr. Malley?
I just came to apologize.
I don't agree with your politics
but what I did was wrong.
You and I are more alike
- than you think.
- Yeah, I couldn't
- I couldn't do what you do.
- Couldn't you?
You broke quite a few laws in service
- of what you believed was right.
- That's different, though.
I was doing it for the truth.
You're a clever young man,
like your mother.
I knew she'd figure it out
if she stuck with Hoffman.
You tried to kill my son.
I never thought Janet would go that far.
Not good enough.
All those souls,
they were already gone.
I thought at least
I could save British aviation.
How considerate of you, Howard.
Moreau promised to fix the NAVI problem;
make sure that nothing like this
ever happened again.
You thought I'd be easy to manipulate,
didn't you?
If I did, I got that wrong.
I should have remembered
just how bloody dogged
- you could be.
- Yeah, well,
I learned from the best, didn't I?
The USB was a fake, wasn't it?
Goodbye, Howard.
Goodbye, soldier.
Oh, I thought I had it.
Okay, where does this go?
- Here?
- No.
If I put the eye like this,
she looks cross-eyed though.
- I went to see Bartok today.
- What?
- Just to apologize.
- Really?
Yeah.
Even helped you out with that sub.
Pretty nice things to say about you.
Yeah? Like what?
Like that you were clever
and that he knew
that you'd figure it out
if you stuck with Hoffman.
Get dressed.
- Hi.
- We've been played.
Gimme a minute.
Do you really think that Bartok
- was behind all of this?
- I do.
The "white knight" investors
that saved Windsor Aeronautics?
Dom and I did some digging.
They're all affiliated
with Bartok International.
He's getting the whole thing
for pennies on the pound.
Bartok knew about Hoffman before we did.
I mean, we had nothing to go on
until Stefon Tark
turned up out of the blue.
Couldn't Tark have
just been a lucky break?
I don't think so.
I think that Bartok convinced
Hoffman to get onto that flight.
I mean, I went through Hoffman's report.
- The vulnerability was real.
- But why did he lose control
of Flight 716? He had run
that simulation over a 100 times
- without a problem.
- Got something!
This is at Heathrow Departures
the day Hoffman flew to New York.
Tark said he just happened to bump
into his old friend there.
Oh, my God.
He's giving Hoffman his laptop.
Right, we need a deep dive on Tark.
There has to be a connection
between him and Bartok.
- Yeah.
- Right.
I'm onto Scotland Yard.
- Uh, so what was in the case?
- Oh, I uploaded
some rare video games
on his laptop as a favour.
My work ran late
so I met him at the airport.
I swear, I had no idea
what Hoffman was planning.
You didn't instal a video game, did you?
You installed a virus.
A virus that would take over
once Hoffman started his hack;
froze the pilot's controls and
sent the plane into a nosedive.
- I'm just an academic.
- An academic who received
a very large sum of money
in an offshore account
- the day Flight 716 disappeared.
- What?
How long have you been working
for Pavel Bartok?
Pa? I don't know
who you're talking about.
Of course you don't.
"Accidental explosion kills nine
in Sokutsk facility.
Among the survivors,
aerospace engineers Pavel Bartok
and Stefon Tark." Hm?
I won't say anything more
without my solicitor.
You do realize that
you could go to prison
- for the act of mass murder?
- Well,
at least I'd still be alive.
Ms. Malley. What an unexpected pleasure.
You on your way to meet buyers, are you?
Is it Saudis, or Beijing?
'Cause I hear they're all
in the market for new aircraft.
My company specializes in repurposing
- distressed assets.
- Oh, you certainly do.
I told you I don't like to lose.
Tell me something.
How do you live with yourself
knowing that you're responsible
for killing 255 people?
Well, you should be
very careful, Ms. Malley.
Mass murder is a
serious accusation to make.
Did you know that Daniel Hoffman
was a master of encryption?
And we're finding files within files
that we're only starting to crack open.
But you don't make mistakes, do you?
Thanks. I'll let her know.
Forensics has gone through
all of Stefon Tark's devices.
They've found enough to prove
that he planted the virus.
- Any link to Bartok's?
- No.
And Tark's not talking.
Did you get what you came for?
No.
But I will.
