Earth: Final Conflict s02e07 Episode Script

Fissures

The last transport of the night.
And tonight we're very pleased to bring you a live interview with President Daniel Thompson.
Good evening, Mr.
President.
Good evening, Catherine, thank you for having me.
What's going through your mind as we approach the election in November? Well, there will be a clear choice this November because for the first time the voters agree that there really is only one issue: our relationship with the Taelons.
And in my second term I plan to expand upon the friendship that I've developed with the Taelons over the past 3 and a half years.
You can bet that when the real campaigning starts Thompson will be trumpeting his alliance with Zo'or on this portal program.
Yeah, I heard that.
We gotta run a test on new pathway before we can go home.
Bangkok ready? Yep, just talked to them.
They are waiting with bated breath.
Alright, Hank, have a nice jump to Bangkok.
You hear about O'Connor? The guy from the engineering? Yeah, walked in yesterday.
Said there was no way he would send anyone through these new passageways without more testing.
I see there's no complains from Hank there.
What's the problem with O'Connor anyway? Well, he's worries that the Taelons are opening up routes in sectors of interdimensional space that even they haven't explored.
Well, they had to do something.
There was way too much overcrowding on the existing routes.
Too many customer complains about delays and canceled transports.
You wanna see complains? Wait till someone gets permanently lost in one of these new pathways.
Well, if the head of the Taelons wants something, you don't argue.
Especially when you get from New York to London in a matter of minutes.
Hank has arrived safe and sound.
Even if he did loose his head a bit on the way.
Alright, are you coming? No, I got to recalibrate portal 3.
See you tomorrow.
They are the Companions.
Aliens come to Earth on a mission of peace.
Their true mission, the secrets they hide, forever alter humanity.
Caught in the struggle between these Taelon Companions and the Human Resistance is Liam Kincaid.
A man who is more than human.
The mysteries of his past hold the key to Earth's future and the fate of mankind.
On Earth Final Conflict.
And the coroner found that Ralston died of a heart attack.
There was no evidence of foul play, so they are not gonna shut us down.
From the photos of the scene it looks like Ralston was fighting something off.
Yeah, I know, it appeared that way to me too.
However, that was no physical evidence to support that.
He did have burns on his arms and legs though.
Part of the job, man.
If you had any idea how much energy this calibrator puts out.
Let's just say, one slip when this baby's fired up definitely gets your attention.
With the Taelons as our partners, a new golden age of humanity is not just a dream, it's vibrant reality.
Due to power outage we are currently experiencing in our New York studio we are unable to continue our broadcast.
As soon as the problem is corrected we will bring you the remainder of last night's interview with President Thompson.
And it's not just New York, these blackouts are happening all across the country.
And there's no explanation? No, not yet.
The Taelons are ready to help any way they can, Mr.
President.
Thank you, I know that.
Are the Taelons causing the blackouts, Zo'or? What would be the reason for such an action? If the Taelons created this problem so they could come to President Thompson's aid to solve it, it could result in a large boost to President Thompson's campaign.
That is a great amount of effort to ensure a result that is already assured.
You don't think anyone stands a chance against Thompson, do you? Thompson is irrelevant.
The American people will support any candidate that has the endorsement of the Synod.
Although, now that this crisis presented itself, it would be foolhardy to ignore the opportunity it provides.
Where's Doors? He's meeting with Michael Deraux, the leader of the Liberation in France.
Oh, I see the power shortage has forced you to conserve.
Well, I did turn the lava lamp off.
You know the Washington is virtually shut down, right? Yes, yes, I know.
Well, I can say thank God for Doors paranoia.
You know he installed a totally independent power supply that's insulated from the city grid? Why do you think I'm hanging here? Any idea what's causing the blackouts? Gee, let me guess, does the name Zo'or ring a bell? No, that was my first thought too, but creating a problem that his candidate can fix, pretty indirect way to get Thompson re-elected.
I don't know, I think it'd pretty damn clever.
It's a plan I'd be proud of.
Oh, humor me, Augur, assume Zo'or's not behind this.
Okay.
I've been thinking about the portals ever since you have told me your suspicions about the technician's heart attack.
Oh, you're concerned? That's not like you.
Alright.
Take a look at this.
You know I have major holdings in Portal Space, right? - The company that - Runs the portal program.
Right.
Oh, and you're concerned about your investments.
- Talk about one track mind - Lucky for you I have one.
The blackouts are only occurring in cities with portal terminals.
Coincidence? Hardly.
Taelon technology is now being used extensively in a wide variety of Earth-based systems and that appears to be the root of the problem.
Why would that be causing the blackouts.
Taelon engineers believe that these systems have now become incompatible and that is causing the blackout.
Many of the Taelon systems have been in place on Earth for many years without any incident.
Exactly.
And that is why the human engineers and the Taelon engineers disagree.
And what explanation have the human engineers offered for these blackouts? None, yet.
That is not much help, is it, Capt.
Marquette? The Taelon engineers have designed a buffer which can be installed in the Earth-based systems.
This buffer was designed to eliminate the incompatibility of the systems and alleviate the blackouts.
Now that sounds like a constructive solution.
You will be the liaison form the Taelons to President Thompson for the duration of this crisis.
Certainly, Zo'or.
With the upcoming presidential election it's essential for the American people to see how just important human beings are in the Taelon hierarchy.
Of course, as always, you will make no decision without my approval.
Of course, Zo'or.
He did die of massive heart failure.
So the coroner was right.
Well, about the cause of death, yes, but his heart attack could've been caused by a number of factors including fear.
He has no history of heart disease and no family history either.
The coroner felt that those bruises were caused when he kicked the portal housing during a seizure caused by heart attack.
Ah, but these bruises are too severe.
I doubt that a seizure could've caused them.
It looks more like he was kicking in a state of panic.
Report says these burn are common for anyone who uses the kind of tools these technicians use.
Maybe an extremely careless technician.
His partner said Ralston was anything but careless.
Take a look at this.
Can you the puncture marks in the middle of the burn? Any idea what caused them? I know, this sounds ridiculous, but from identical spacing and depth of puncture, I'd say it's more consistent with bite marks.
Attention, ladies and gentlemen, due to technical malfunction all portal flights will be detained I need to conduct my own inspection.
Power down.
Suspend all portal travel until I'm done.
Oh, that's great.
We're already operating half capacity as it is on emergency generators.
I want all transport data from the last into my global.
I said I want the entire unit powered down while I conduct my inspection.
I heard you clearly the first time.
The power is down.
I guess you haven't heard Portal Space's new commercial, huh? We've got the best untimed record in the travel business.
And I've asked Companion Agent Ronald Sandoval to joins us as a representative of the Taelons who have generously offered their assistance in this crisis.
Mr.
Sandoval, the crisis has now spread around the world.
And none of us have had any successes in stopping the blackouts or restoring the power.
Our Taelon engineers have been working on the problem.
They've designed buffers to facilitate the compatibility of Taelon and human technology.
Half of population is without power.
I'm not interested in the compatibility of human and Taelon technology at this moment.
We must remove the Taelon technology.
Absolutely, we need to deal with the blackouts immediately.
There's no need for such a drastic solution.
The American people are willing to work with the Taelons to remedy this situation.
I don't care what the American people are willing to do.
The African people want the technology removed at once.
The Taelons share your concern for your people.
But this argument is irrelevant because it could take weeks to extract the extensive amount of Taelon technology currently used on the planet.
Installing the buffers is the only timely alternative.
According to the Taelon engineers.
The Taelon's only goal is to assist us in alleviating this crisis.
Have your engineers come up with any viable recommendations? Or any of your engineers? Then I suggest we follow President Thompson's lead and allow the Taelons to install the buffers to restore power to your citizens.
So, these creatures have been nestled around the portal's power supply? Yeah, dozens of them.
Any idea what they are? Nah.
You asked Sandoval or Zo'or? I wanted to see what you came up with first.
Zo'or might have planted them here.
Give me a second.
The hell are you doing, Augur? If these fireflies are going to affect commercial interdimensional travel then my Portal Space stock could take a dive.
Look, it's a 54 and Do you mind if I call my broker first? Do you mind getting back to work? Okay.
Sorry, I forgot to tell you, one thing I did learn, they attack when they are threatened.
Thank you for nothing! Well, now we know where bite marks on Ralston came from.
Just not like these creatures are gonna turn up in your neighbor pet store any time soon.
It seemed they were attracted to energy in the portals.
See if it reacts the same way there.
Ready? Feeds off energy.
We gotta figure out where the hell they came from.
Well, that should be a breeze.
You know, I always leave the toughest ones for you, Augur.
I first saw he creatures when I was in the portal, so let's start there.
This has all the transport data from the New York portals for the last 2 days.
See what you can do.
Hey, what you think you're doing? Seeking more extensive information about the blackout crisis on Earth.
Yeah? Who is it? Information contained in the secured Taelon files.
Well, last time I checked you were Zo'or's right-hand man.
You have access to any files you need.
Captain, I don't want anyone to know I'm accessing these files.
Your access codes are monitored by only Zo'or.
He'd be the only one to know that you're reading these files.
Like I said, I don't want anyone to know.
What are you looking for? Evidence.
Evidence that Zo'or caused these blackouts in time to coincide with the presidential election.
With this you can anonymously access the secured files from any terminal on this ship.
Oh, yeah? If it's anonymous why can't you do it yourself? The access keys aren't foolproof.
I can't risk detection.
Oh, but you don't mind risking my neck Captain.
If you're caught, you're brought to me.
If I'm caught, I have to answer to Zo'or.
Okay.
But I wanna know why.
Yes.
Your presence is urgently required on the bridge.
You're my subordinate.
I've given you an order.
No.
I have never seen such a creature.
We think Zo'or introduced these creatures on Earth so that the Taelons can eliminate them, become heroes right before the election.
No.
Such a plan would never be approved by the Synod.
That would explain why Zo'or didn't take it to the Synod.
He'll just do it on his own like he always does.
Zo'or may be the head of the Synod, but he still needs approval Zo'or has the full resources of of the Taelons at his disposal.
He can hide anything he wants, Da'an, especially from you, because you're a threat.
Then we must challenge Zo'or in front of the Synod to determine if he has in fact caused this crisis.
And what good will that do? Zo'or has the full support of the Synod on virtually every issue.
Not the full support.
Your support of humanity is meaningless without the power to influence the Taelons.
And you've lost that power to Zo'or.
Can I help you with something? Oh, no, thanks.
Agent Sandoval wants me to verify some data on the blackouts.
Isn't that information available on bridge? Sure, but Agent Sandoval, wants to keep the lines of communication on the bridge open in case any of the world leaders need to contact Taelons.
Come on.
Zo'or's gotta be behind this.
What the hell do you think you're doing? - Stand aside and be silent.
- You have no authority to hold me here.
I need to speak with Agent Sandoval immediately.
Agent Sandoval is currently in conference with President Thompson.
This is urgent.
Zo'or will see you on the bridge.
Nobody goes to Zo'or without going through me.
You were in conference.
Do you understand me? Yes, sir.
And until full power can be restored to our studio we are being simulcast live on radio for viewers who cannot receive television of web broadcasts.
Although, several hundred casualties have resulted because of the blackouts, we're told that most people are heeding the warnings to stay inside their homes.
The major concern now are the reports of these mysterious glowing creatures that have allegedly been seen by hundreds of eyewitnesses.
There are unconfirmed reports that these creatures are attacking people causing serious injuries and deaths around the globe.
Think maybe you can cut a little closer next time? Where's the evidence? There is no evidence.
I could find nothing to link Zo'or with the creatures.
And if he is behind it he's doing everything he can to cover his tracks.
What is this all about? You know everything you need to know.
Think Zo'or would be interested in your activities? Is that a threat, Captain? No.
But I need to know what the hell is going on with you.
I don't owe you an explanation now or ever.
You're pursuing your own agenda! If I am pursuing my own agenda you can be assured that I will be even more determined that nothing will get in my way! Captain.
I have a theory.
I've heard that line before about a thousand times.
You know that the portal program became a huge overnight success.
And the interdimensional pathways became overcrowded rather quickly.
Yeah, the portal engineers said that they were testing out unexplored interdimensional space right before the attack.
Exactly, but the important word there being "unexplored".
You see, I'm thinking that these creatures came form one of those unexplored dimensions and we just showed them the way here through the portals.
Now, come here, look at this.
Look familiar? Yeah, very.
That's probable home, sweet home for that little beggar.
Looks like it's dying without any energy to feed on.
Here, here you go.
I guess, that makes you the proud mama.
Problem with the generator? Not yet.
Let's seal fast, we're bleeding him out.
Pick up the pace, we don't know how long we'll have power.
Clamp.
Heart rate is strong, blood pressure normal.
Our readings from the monitors are destabilizing.
The respirator's down! He'll die if we don't get power! And the latest estimates put the death toll at over a thousand now as people all over the world are refusing to stay in their homes despite the government's warnings.
This was a scene in the White House just moments ago as President Thompson addressed the nation.
These creatures will not attack people unless they are threatened.
Now, I know how difficult it is for you to stay in your homes where you feel powerless to help.
But believe me, this is the best strategy for all of us right now.
Our engineers are working with the Taelon engineers to eradicate these creatures.
We have no way to kill these creatures.
Yeah, and all our weapons are based on some form of energy, but to these creatures it's like breakfast.
We have permanently sent the whole lot of them back to their home.
Okay, what is it? What? What is "what"? It's like you have a theory look.
If we use the portal to open an interdimensional passage back to the creatures' dimension an show them the way home, I'm guessing that they'll take it.
No, the portals are all located in large cities.
We want to move the creatures out of the major population centers.
What about a shuttle? Maybe.
I mean, the shuttle's interdimensional drive could be used to open up a passageway back to the creatures' home.
And we can land the shuttle in non-populated area and reduce the risk to human lives.
Yeah, but you see, that's assuming that we can even get the creatures to follow the shuttle.
Well, there's only one way to do that.
Offer them the best gourmet meal they've ever seen.
Yeah, but, you know, if we're gonna attract the creatures then that meal is going to be the most powerful energy source on the planet.
I know exactly where that is.
The Taelon buffers have not been effective in repelling the creatures.
The creatures are feeding on Taelon energy as easily as human-based energy sources.
Is the mother ship vulnerable? We've halted all incoming flights, but shuttles carrying relief supplies have been flying in and out of the mother ship ever since the crisis began.
Seal the shuttle bay.
It is already in progress.
Zo'or, I fear that the Taelons are in danger from these creatures.
Why Taelons in particular? The creatures have shown that they will only attack humans when they are threatened.
Their main focus is feeding.
Get to your point, Agent Sandoval.
The creatures feed on energy.
The Taelons are made primarily of energy.
To repeat: All flights scheduled to land in mother ship have been suspended.
Please, select another destination and proceed there immediately.
Have the base been sealed? Yes.
Assuming our conventional techniques will be effective against the creatures.
I recommend that we search all shuttles currently docked in the shuttle bay for any signs of the creatures.
Agreed.
Seal off the shuttle bay! I can't hold them in the shuttle bay.
They're infesting the whole ship! Come on, come on, get out of there! The creature are not attacking human beings as long as we don't threaten them.
But they are going after the Taelons.
There are seven reported dead already.
I cannot find fault with your theory, yet.
Agent Sandoval, what theory are you referring to? The creatures are attacking the Taelons because they are made primarily of energy.
To save yourself you must reduce the energy being emitted from your body.
You are suggesting that we voluntarily put ourselves into a state of Samha'ad.
My understanding is that the Samha'ad is near-death meditative state that the Taelons can induce within themselves.
And with our decreased energy emissions we will no longer attract the creatures.
I believe this to be true, yes.
If all Taelons are in the Samha'ad state who will captain the ship? Me, of course.
Yes? I'm heading for mother ship.
I've got a plan to get rid of the creatures.
We've suspended all the flights into the mother ship.
Why? The creatures are there already.
I'll clear you through.
Liam.
Sandoval got the Taelons in some kind of a stasis, a meditative state that reduces their energy emissions.
Samha'ad? Yes.
Liam, the Taelons are very vulnerable in this state.
What are you doing? Contacting Doors.
We have an opportunity here to eliminate the Taelons.
All of them, right now.
Eliminate.
You mean, we could kill all the Taelons? Yes, they've been killing human beings since the day they got here.
Fine.
I'll give you the honor of personally eliminating Da'an.
Is Zo'or cognizant while in this state? No.
Apparently not.
It has been described to us as roughly equivalent to human unconsciousness.
Vacate the lab until I notify you to return.
I'm sorry, sir.
Zo'or has been very specific about my orders.
I am to personally monitor his readings until he returns from the Samha'ad.
You have new orders.
I cannot disobey a direct order unless I have Leave! Now! This is the auxiliary coil.
It's the backup power supply for the entire mother ship.
And you are certain this coil is stronger than any power source on Earth? Nothing will even be close.
So you're planning to use the power emitter from this coil to attract the creatures to the shuttle? What do you want, Captain? Major Kincaid is installing the power coil in to the shuttle.
I was just on my way.
If you don't make any sudden movements, they won't hurt you.
Conventional drives don't have enough energy to power up the coil.
This won't work.
It's the creatures, they are draining the shuttles power.
We'll have to tie the coil directly into the interdimensional drives.
The interdimensional drives don't generate the stable flow of power.
I can't predict how the coil will respond.
I need Lili to pilot while I use the power coil to lure the creatures into the shuttle's interdimensional passageway.
Proceed.
These creatures have already caused a lot of damage.
There is no way for me to tell which operations are functional.
Only one way to find out.
Okay.
The conventional drives are totally down.
We are not even getting off the ship.
We have to use interdimensional.
From inside the mother ship? We've got to get out of here somehow.
Look, jump-starting into interdimensional is risky at any time, but with the drives in this current condition it's little bit like Russian roulette.
Well, the Russia it is.
What are you talking about? We have to land in a spot that's isolated.
So how does Siberia sound? Isolated.
Can you guarantee me a nice, soft landing in the snow? We will be lucky to end up on the right planet.
Looks like the right planet.
Hey, not bad, New York City.
I can see the roof of the Torvald building.
Not so much for landing in Siberia.
At least, pull a little closer to the curb? Not a chance.
I'm not getting any closer with these damaged drives.
As a matter of fact, I'm surprised we've got the hovering capability.
I'll join you as soon as all the creatures have made their way through.
You can activate the power coil from the roof, let's go! I can't keep the interdimensional passageway open from there.
It's way too volatile.
I'll have to do it from here.
Alright.
Is the power coil charging up? Yeah, I'm gonna open the interdimensional passageway now.
- The passageway's open.
- What about the power coil? The interdimensional drive is too unstable.
The coil's loosing power.
Come on.
Come on, you guys.
I can't hold this passageway open for long.
They're coming! What are you waiting for? I'm activating a fusion reaction in the coil.
It'll overload, you'll be incinerated! I'll be out of here before it blows.
You will never make it.
Just get down here.
We'll figure out some other way to get rid of the creatures.
It's starting to overload.
There's no more! Get the hell outta there! Does this latest incident changed your position on the Taelons? No.
No, not at all.
Is there risk in interdimensional travel? Yes, of course there's risk.
Just as there was risk when the Wright brothers lifted off the ground at Kitty Hawk, or there's risk when you or I step on an airplane.
But I've never known the American people to run away from risk.
We have a conversation to finish.
I was finished.
You're looking for an understanding, Captain.
An understanding I'm not willing to provide.
That's not good enough.
Be loyal to me and me alone.
You do that and you'll survive.
You already know what will happen if you betray me.
I know you have the same questions that I do.
And what would those be, Captain? Zo'or and Da'an may argue about the best way to prepare humanity for Jaridian invasion, but they both base their strategy on the same assumption.
That the Jaridians are our enemy.
You have no facts to offer to dispute that assumption.
And no facts to support it except for Zo'or's word.
And Da'an's.
Keep an open mind.
I am.
