McKenzie: Previously on Face Off Yvonne's whimsical ghost brought her her second win, but Johnny missed his mark and was sent home, and tonight, the artists are put to the ultimate test.
Brace yourselves for the Gauntlet.

Damn it! - What is happening? - We have no idea what's coming.

I might have a panic attack.
McKenzie: In the end, only one will win a VIP trip from Kryolan Professional Make-Up to one of their 85 international locations, a brand-new 2016 Fiat 500, and $100,000.
This is Face Off.
[exciting music.]
All right.
- What? - What the hell? - It's very watery.
- We walk into the lab, and McKenzie is standing next to these four monitors, and there's this watery light show going on behind her, and we have no idea what's going on.
I hope to God it's not underwater makeup.
Congratulations on making it this far in the competition.
- Thank you.
- Now, I'm sure it's been quite a wild ride for you so far, but you might want to strap yourselves in because your mettle as makeup artists is about to be put to the ultimate test.
Brace yourselves for the Gauntlet.
- Oh.
- Shit.
Oh, man.
As soon as McKenzie says "Gauntlet," I lose my shit.
I'm terrified.
As a reminder, the Gauntlet is a series of three challenges designed to test every facet of your skills - as a makeup artist.
- Oh, my God.
In the end, one of you will be eliminated.
- Oh, God.
- However, this season we're gonna do things a little differently.
In stages one and two, the two artists who secure top looks will be safe this week and will not be required to compete in the subsequent rounds.
I'm gonna throw up.
I hope I win that so I can just chill out and watch the others fight themselves to death.
All right, let the games begin.
In films like Hook and Pirates of the Caribbean, pirate captains take center stage as swarthy and savvy kings of the sea, so for your first Gauntlet challenge, you'll be creating your own captain character inspired by some of history's most famous mythical ships.
Oh, yes, I'm excited.
But there's another major component of this challenge.
- Of course.
- What's one of the things that many of history's famous captains have in common? A signature beard, so in addition to simply making a captain character, you must also hand lay a magnificent beard.
I really like laying beards, so I'm like, "Here's my chance to shine.
" This will be the first time that I've ever had to hand lay a beard, so I'm feeling really nervous.
All right, well, you guys ready to see what ships you - have to inspire your captains? - Yes.
Yes.
First we have the Manjet barge, the ship that carried the Egyptian sun god Ra across the sky.
Next we have the Naglfar, a Viking ship composed of the bones and nails of the dead.
- Ooh.
- Yes, please.
Our third ship is the Flying Dutchman, crewed by the souls of dead pirates, and finally, the Nautilus, Jules Verne's fictional steam-powered submarine from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
I'm so excited.
I'm so excited.
Guys, come on out.
[laughter.]
I'm, like, excited and terrified.
So as you can see, the captains are all geared up, and it's up to you to complete their looks in a manner appropriate to their ships.
You have two hours for this challenge.
On my go, pick a model and get started.
Go! - Damn it! - I touched you, so now you're mine.
Ready to have a big-ass beard? I see the Flying Dutchman, and I'm like, "That's the one I got to have".
It's ruled by the souls of the damned, so I need to make this captain match this amazing pirate ship.
I need him to look dead, so I quickly base him out in a grayish color, and then I start laying the beard.
He's out on the open water, so I'm pretty sure he doesn't have mirrors.
He can't really take care of it, so I want it to look more scraggly, and I'm thinking this might be kind of cool.
This is terrifying.
I get the Nautilus ship, and it has sort of a steam punk feel.
My captain is gonna be an old sailor, but I want him to look surreal, so I'm trying to incorporate some of this color palette and some of these shapes into my character, but the crux of the challenge is laying a beard, and I am not good with hair at all.
Gross.
I don't like when it sticks to my fingers.
I don't like having it on my own head, so I'm feeling like I'm going to stage two of the Gauntlet.
My scissor is sticky.
Fuck! I'm doing a clean, luxurious, well-kept captain.
The Nautilus costume is actually really cool-looking.
There's a lot of coppers and golds and, like, reds, so I decide to use some hair that has red tones in it.
I'm just gonna spray on some gold highlights.
I get the Manjet barge.
It's an Egyptian gold boat, so I decided to go with this holy god look that would inspire future pharaohs.
I do a lot of costuming for myself, and I usually dress up as guys, so I wear a lot of facial hair.
I've been laying beards for about seven years now, so the technique that I use for laying hair is I hold a small section of hair.
I dab part of it in Pros-Aide, tap it down, and then pull out the excess so it looks a little bit more sparse like a natural beard would look.
While I'm very excited for this challenge, if I fail it, it's also gonna be humiliating.
[laughs.]
Hopefully they like it.
I picked the Flying Dutchman, which is a ghost ship, so the captain would have to look ghost-like.
Captain Geschirrspuelmaschine.
"Geschirrspuelmaschine" means dishwasher in German, so my concept is the captain was cursed by his ex-wife because he never washed the dishes.
To turn you into a dirty pirate it's Captain Dishwasher.
I get the Naglfar because it looks like an old Viking ship, and I love the whole genre of Vikings, so my concept is a captain of a warship, so I want to go with warrior paint, a simple beard, maybe one braid in the chin, and a little bit aged and weathered.
I'm trying to make the beard thicker and heavier down towards the neckline and the jaw line so it kind of just has a little more realistic look.

It's very nerve-racking to have the judges here at the lab.
It really brings up the pressure.
My character is the captain of the Naglfar, a Viking ship made of bone and nails.
- You did a pretty good job.

You even got the mustache on.
I particularly like how you trimmed it 'cause it feels lived-in, coarse and bristly.

I really want to win because I do not want to deal with the stress that the Gauntlet will bring.
My character is the embodiment of the sun king Ra.
This is really courageous because it's so little beard.
I wanted to stay true to the representation of the pharaohs.
Yeah, I think that's really smart.
It doesn't feel like you were skirting the issue here and trying to get away with laying very little hair.
It feels very appropriate for what it is.
- Thank you.
- This is Captain Geschirrspuelmaschine, which is German for dishwasher.
His wife put a curse on him because he was never washing the dishes.
You are a strange, strange man.

I like all of the thought that you put into this character, very cool.
Oh, and the scar action.
The mustache is really nice.
It's subtle, and I think that was a smart way to approach this.

You did a pretty good job laying your beard in.

I like the fact that you blended colors too.
That's always important.
And also the color that you've applied to his face, the way you've dirtied him up, it really helps to pull everything together so the colors in the hair and the colors on his face work nicely together.

you wouldn't notice that it was laid on.

- He's basically an Egyptian pirate that's been sailing the seas in the blazing sun.
That's pretty nice.
You got the edge really broken up, very natural and real-looking.
I wish that your braiding here was just a little better.
Better? Yeah, no, I totally agree.
Yeah, it's a great idea though.

- Yeah, but it-- I mean, it sells the idea.
I would love to be able to sit out for the next challenge, and we have no idea what's coming, so I'm super nervous right now.

If Glenn doesn't call my name, I might have a panic attack.
I definitely want to be one of the top looks.
I don't want to have to fight to the death in the second stage of the Gauntlet.
This is terrifying.
Who were the top looks from stage one? Walter, your character had a really clean beard, and the decision to do some breakup and weathering on the face was brilliant.

Your next challenge taps into a legendary object that, if opened, will unleash chaos upon the world-- Pandora's Box.
- Ooh.
- What is happening? So in the spirit of Pandora's Box and the chaos within, your next challenge is all about creating order from chaos.
I'm thinking this could be right up my alley.
I'm definitely excited.
This is cool.
Inside each of the boxes around you are three premade prosthetics.
Your stage two challenge is to use those three disparate pieces to create a cohesive character.
Not too bad, right? Of course, there's a catch.
When is there not? Chaos is unpredictable, and so is this challenge.
You may not use any of your prosthetics in the way that they were intended.
For instance, if you get a chin piece, you cannot use it on the chin.
I'm feeling so overwhelmed.
This feels so much harder than the beard challenge.
- They weren't kidding.
- All right, judges, any words of wisdom before things get underway? If you take the chin and put it on the forehead, it can't be a chin forehead.
Just understand the utility of the piece.
All right, guys, when I say go, select a model and a box and get started.
Go! - Hello.
- Oh, wonderful.
There's a brow piece, a nose piece, and a neck piece.
What I'm instantly drawn to is witch.
I can lay down the nose on her chin just to point it out.
The next thing I do is start lining up the brow piece on her jaw line, and then I take the double chin, I cut it in half, and I make these ears.
It's looking better than what I expected.
This is the fun one.
I have a forehead piece, a nose, and two cheek pieces, so I think of a ghostly undertaker-type character.
I decided to use the cheek pieces as forehead anatomy.
I put the nose upside down on the chin, and the eyebrow piece is very angular, and there's a lot of definite shapes in it, so I cut it in half and used them as jawbone pieces.
I have a brow and nose piece, two under-eye cheek prosthetics, and a butt chin, so I'm thinking more alien right off the bat.
I take the two cheeks and put them near the ears, and I'm feeling confident about the placement of them, but I have the chin piece left, which is the only piece I can't seem to find a place to put.
I got to do something with this shit.
I'm trying it as horns.
I'm trying it behind the ears.
Can you hold this here? Finally I put it under here like a frog sort of feel.
It's not the best idea, but it's better to have a bad idea than no idea.
I'm kind of going for, like, a Robin Hood-type character that's a protector of the animals.
This stage is so much harder than stage one.
I end up getting this weird owl prosthetic which I apply around the jaw.
I also have two nasal labial folds, and I place the pieces around the eyes.
Finally, I have a werewolf nose.
I place it underneath the lip, and that's my favorite part of the makeup so far.
So let's do this right.
I have the big chin.
The forehead is connected with the low piece, and I have two giant Spock ears.
The nose piece is turned upside-down on the cheeks.
I put the Mr.
Spock ears over her eyebrows.
Works pretty well, and then the big chin, I just pop it on the forehead.
Immediately, a name pops to my mind, and it's Kwaldangna.
She's a demonic presence.
I will use her to put a spell on the judges to work in my favor.
15 minutes left.

Yeah.
This is Chessa, a cat-elf hybrid.
The ears are a neck piece.
Her chin right here is a nose piece, and her cheeks are brow.
It actually works in kind of that Froud fairy petal aesthetic.
You maybe should have popped her eyebrows a little bit more since you have so much color on her eyelids.
My character is sort of a roguish alien smuggler.
The pieces on his forehead were two cheek pieces kind of like a clown grin.
His chin is a nose piece, and his jaw pieces were a forehead that I split in half.
It's smart placement, particularly that forehead.
- That's great.

I do like your color choices too.
I like that purple-y color and that spatter work and everything, breaks it up nicely.
Okay, this is Kwaldangna.
I summoned her from the Stahl system to enchant your brains to make me win from now on.
Oh.
So this is ears.
This is the chin piece.
This is the forehead, and this is actually the nose.
It strangely fit all very well together.
- It did, didn't it? - Yeah, it sure did, and it ended up with almost something that feels like Kabuki with Spanish ren faire costuming.
It really works for me.
I love the paint job too.
She's very colorful.
I'm already thinking of what to order at that restaurant.
What I had was a nose piece that I used for her chin, a lower lip piece that I used for her brow.
The upper lip I put on her neck.
I wanted to start making, like, a wrinkle, and then, of course, the jaw, I couldn't really do much with it, so I decided, you know, headdress trophy.
I like where the jaw is, - actually.
- Yeah.
I think it frames her eyes nicely and-- It's kind of a crown there anyway.
Yeah, it looks really cool like that with the teeth inverted, and I really like what you did with this neck idea.
I'm not so sure I agree with you, Glenn, on this piece.
It feels like that's a desperate attempt of, "I got to glue the other piece somewhere.
Where does it go?" This is actually a chin piece that I cut in half.
I figured this was an external breathing mechanism.
- Mm-hmm.
- This is a nose, which was attached to a brow piece.
The brow piece is connected to an under-eye bag.
I don't know that I love what you did with the chubby cheek appliances.
It almost looks like he has something stuck into the side of his throat.
I do like this rusty kind of thing going on up here though.
- That's a cool idea.
- Thank you.
After hearing from the judges, I'm not feeling confident about being a top look.
Okay, guys, it's time to find out who came out on top.
Glenn? The top looks from stage two of the Gauntlet are Rob.
The way that you repurposed the shapes and really made them fit created such a complete character, it felt like it could be a background alien in a film.

The second top look is Robert.
Choosing to use the ears above the brow bone, giving her this demonic look that almost felt Kabuki, so cool.
Yes! I'm relieved that I'm done with the Gauntlet.
It looked like the magic spell worked out in the end.

So stage three-- We're all safe, and we're all having a good time, but we know that the other four are gonna go through hell tomorrow, and one of them will be going home, so it's a bittersweet juxtaposition.

This is the third stage of the Gauntlet, and I see McKenzie standing in front of a big red curtain.
We have no idea what's in store, and that's the scariest part.
This third and final stage of the Gauntlet is by far the most challenging yet.
Instead of telling you about your next challenge, I'd rather show you.
Take a look.
Oh, God.
This giant curtain just drops.
There's 12 models, and there's only four of us.
I am in a panic right now.
You've all heard the popular phrase, "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil," but we've rarely seen it manifested.
That's about to change.
For stage three of the Gauntlet you'll each be creating three horrific makeups that physically embody the phrase.
Fuck.
Horror's not my thing.
Hair was not my area.
I'm starting to feel like this is a little personal.
All right, let's get right to it because you're gonna need all the time that you can get.
Your models have been divided into groups of three for this challenge.
When I call your name, please choose a group of them and head to your workstation.
Anna, you're first.
One.
Three.
Two.
Four.
You're gonna have four hours here at the lab and an additional hour at the reveal stage for Last Looks.
Good luck, guys, because your time starts now.
It's a post-apocalyptic world, - right? - Mm-hmm.
And you're all sort of, like, priests.
My concept is the same way that priests sacrifice sex and worldly goods, this group sacrifice one of their senses in order to be closer to God.
They cut the skin and "surrender" the sense.
Okay, that's kind of cool.
I'm thinking something tribal, but as I started looking through the wardrobe, I realized that we have no wardrobe that matches what I want to do.
None of this stuff, like, goes together.
I need to change my concept, but I just need to get the ball rolling.
I'm gonna start putting on your brow piece.
We're gonna start putting prosthetics on, and hopefully I can figure out my new concept while I'm working.
You guys are just kind of, like, doing your thing, and then the undead come and attack you.
For this challenge, I instantly think zombies.
I want speak no evil to have his jaw ripped out, hear no evil to have his ears ripped off, and see no evil to be blinded.
I really want them to be terrifying and scary, so as I'm applying my pieces, I'm also blending the edges with some cut-in and tissue and latex to just add more of a ripped skin effect.
It's looking super cool, so I'm happy where it's headed.
I mean, it's pretty gnarly-looking.
Oh, man, this is nuts.
This one's really hard.
It's stumping me 'cause I don't want to do what everybody else is doing, and everybody's starting to apply prosthetics, and I'm still trying to figure out my concept.
Anyone that approaches you, you take their senses.
Eventually I decide that my trio would serve the king by torturing civilians.
The civilians ended up revolting, and they end up torturing them to death with acid, so now they're ghost figures haunting the kingdom grounds.
For hear no evil, I grab a bald cap to make it look his ears have been burnt off with acid.
For see no evil I find some eye bags to represent scarring underneath her eyes, and for speak no evil I'm using a bald cap to make his mouth look like his skin has been fused.
Are you ready? Yeah? I know Neville and Glenn will get down on me if the anatomy is wrong, and I've actually taken two anatomy classes in the last two years, so I'm really hoping to mimic a realistic skin and muscle structure, so I take a two-part silicone mixture, and I apply it in roughly the area these flaps would have come from, and then I start to sculpt in lines the striations.
It's not perfect, but it's enough that it's justified in logic.
Okay, does that kind of look like muscle? - Yeah, it does.
- Cool.
I really am pushed for time, but I finally come up with my new concept.
I'm going to have these three demons who come to Earth, and instead of speaking no evil, seeing no evil, and hearing no evil, they tempt you into seeing the evil and hearing the evil and speaking the evil.
My characters are definitely coming together, but my concept is gonna be a hell of a lot different than everyone else's.
I'm really worried if that could hurt me with the judges.
You look a lot freakier far away.
Just stay away.

I'm gonna be doing a lot of painting in Last Looks.
Figuring out my concept put me way behind, and now I'm under the gun.
There's no time for hand painting at this point, so I just start airbrushing.
Hopefully this is good enough.
15 minutes, everyone.
That is time, everyone.
Oh, my God, so much to do still.
I barely have base coats on my male models, and I have zero paint on Crystal.
I'm thinking at this point I'm just not gonna finish and I'm going home.
Guys, you can just have a seat.
I'm just gonna start airbrushing just so we can get some paint on 'cause we don't have anything on right now.
I am absolutely terrified.
This is not Last Looks.
This is seriously fast looks.
And I'll just put this on.
I have to start airbrushing as fast as I can possibly go.
Whoever's not in my chair, they're painting themselves just to help me get some sort of color on their bodies.
This last hour is brutal.
Everything's at stake.
I'm still worried about my concept being so different than anybody else's, but there's still so much to do.
I need contacts in.
I need to get them painted.
I need more contouring, highlighting.
I have to get these characters done.
Stay as still as possible.
When I look at speak no evil, I notice that the entire face is starting to peel off of his skin and come loose.
I have to glue it back down and fix some of the edges with some makeup, move quickly, and get it done because I really don't want to go home yet.
I'm actually feeling pretty good at this point.
I just need to get these flaps tied down, and I found some hemp string in the lab that I cut up, and now I'm brushing some Tuplast on top so that it creates the effect of going into the skin.
I think it looks pretty cool.

All right, for your final Gauntlet challenge we asked you to show us a terrifying trio of makeups that physically embody the adage, "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil," so without further ado, let's take a look at your final creations.
I'm still a little nervous at my concept.
It was the first thing I thought of, but I think they look cool, and I think they look really scary.
These characters look freaky.
They go together.
I just hope I met the criteria of what the judges were looking for.
I think they really look cohesive.
I wish I applied more highlights, but I'm happier than I was.
They look really freaking cool.
They're all the same tone, and they're all the same color, and they really look like they're meant to be together.
Okay, judges, why don't you go ahead and take a closer look? I wonder why they're so shiny.
Yeah, I think it's-- from a distance they feel very synthetic, almost like robots.
They're also a very odd color.
The mouth looks like a mess.
They-- It's just mounded up on top of the performer's mouth.
She painted these, - and she didn't match the face.
- Mm-hmm.
It's so odd.
This is just stuck on her chin.
It doesn't even look like a legitimate disease.
I'm really nervous, and I'm not sure if the judges are going to understand my concept.
None of them really say, which was the point of the challenge, that she cannot see, she cannot speak, and that he cannot hear.
Instead, they all look quite capable of each of those things.
Hopefully the judges will have mercy on me because I'm not ready to go home.

It feels so "Hellraiser," and I love it.

I love how they feel like they come from the same world, and the wardrobe choices to augment the makeups that you did are spectacular.

Would you please tell us about this horrifying trio? These people were traveling in the winter.
A group of undead came and, you know, tore them apart, so now they are the undead.
They have such bizarre coloring.
Nothing matches, especially on your number three character here closest to you.
Her hands are stone-cold white, and she looks like she has a very healthy tan going on.
The mouth gag, it feels like there's a whole lower piece connected to him.
It feels like her eyes are stuck on, and because of that, they feel a little bit spotty.
You have to try to create negative space where it doesn't exist, so if you'd brought some skin around the edges of the mouth so it felt set in, it might have felt more like his lips were missing.

All right, let's talk to Kaleb.
Kaleb, tell us about your trio of characters.
They're pan-dimensional demons who have come to Earth.
They try to tempt humans into seeing and speaking and hearing evil.
That's the part that's confusing.
It feels like the intended occluded senses are so non-demonstrative, and if anything, they're confusing.
For example, she's looking at me, which means she can see me, so she's not without vision.
I really wish at least one of them hit the nail on the head.
You, of all people, I thought would have found a way to pull a headband down over see no evil's eyes.
You can create this really cool look, and then you could have just built the makeup around the edges of that.
Your makeups are a little bit too messy.
Your model on the left, the black doesn't look lived in.
It doesn't look realistic.

They're these people that live in a post-apocalyptic world, and the same way that priests give up sex and alcohol in order to be closer to God, they have to surrender one of their senses in this sort of ceremony.
This is such a focused vision.
I love some of the fine details.
The way that the flap comes down off of her forehead in see no evil, that is exactly how you'd have to excise the skin.
The well-thought-out execution of the makeups is something I would expect from a team on a much bigger challenge.

Where the skin has been pulled away, beautiful coloration, looks like the inside of skin.
Everything is very cohesive.

So with that, why don't we talk about what you saw here tonight? Let's start with Yvonne's work.
It felt like they stepped right out of a story, like they're background from a film or something.
It was superb from the standpoint of character and styling.
And the paint jobs were all beautiful on every single one of them.
All right, why don't we move on to Mel? The fabrication, the technical execution, the ideas conceptually, so well-thought out.
The underside of the skin looked authentic.
And it all fit together really well.
All right, let's move on to Anna.
What concerned me the most is these were zombies, and they did not look like zombies, especially the color.
That gloss was the polar opposite of zombie.
Yeah, she should powder that down.
It probably would have helped the color look more like rotten flesh.
They could have came out like they were covered in dust or dirt, like they had just crawled out of the grave, and this whole thing probably would have went a little bit better for her.

This whole David Bowie remaking "Rocky Horror Picture Show" high concept fashion thing, just not right for this challenge.
At first glance, they do look like a couple of hookers and their pimp.
And the see no evil felt so substandard.

Yvonne, you made really great color and wardrobe choices, and we thought that there was a true harmony among all of your characters.
Mel, your concept was so strong, and being zeroed in like that allowed you to make some really interesting details throughout your makeup.

Anna, the zombie concept could have worked, but the paint got muddy, and overall it really took away from the look of your characters, and Kaleb, your concept was definitely bold and interesting but seemed like it would be a better fit for a different challenge.
