Face Off (2011) s10e11 Episode Script

The Art Of Warcraft

1 It's really a nice job.
It got so silly.
Unbelievable.
Thank you.
McKenzie: Previously on Face Off Melissa's superb Cyclops brought her her second win, and Mel was saved from elimination.
Make it count.
Yeah.
Seriously.
McKenzie: And tonight, the contestants learn the art of war.
- What is happening? - Holy shit.
- This is fucking awesome.
- Oh, my God.
I'm so excited for this one.
Nothing is going right.
I'm wasting this entire day.
Fuck.
I am, like, this close to a breakdown.
I think it's phenomenal.
It looks like you didn't finish your makeup.
This is incredible.
McKenzie: In the end, only one will win a VIP trip from Kryolan Professional Make-Up to one of their 85 international locations, a brand-new 2016 Fiat 500, and $100,000.
[exciting music.]
This is Face Off! [exciting music.]
[dramatic music.]
What? - Whoa.
- Warcraft? Holy cow.
We walk into the lab, and I immediately recognize the World of Warcraft statue I played all the Warcraft video games.
This is just so cool.
This is fucking awesome.
I cannot wait to hear what the challenge is.
I'm so excited for this one.
Welcome to the World of Warcraft.
- So cool.
- Wow.
Now I wish I played Warcraft.
I know.
This massively multiplayer online role-playing game is a worldwide phenomenon and has been played by over 100 million people.
Wow.
This year, the game jumps from the computer screen to the big screen with an upcoming feature film helmed by BAFTA-winning director Duncan Jones.
The film features two Warcraft races-- humans and orcs.
For your spotlight challenge, you'll follow the film's lead by adapting a character from World of Warcraft to a more realistic badass character fit for a feature film.
- This is fucking awesome.
- Super excited, right? I'm very excited.
[chuckles.]
I am seriously nerding out.
I love to see this excitement.
I have years of experience playing the game, so I'm just completely over the moon.
Now, the Warcraft universe features many races that didn't make it to the big screen, and I brought in an expert to tell you all about them.
Please give an epic welcome to World of Warcraft's senior art director, Chris Robinson.
- Very cool.
- Hey, guys.
Hi.
Thank you so much for being here.
Hey.
Thank you so much.
This is awesome.
We're so excited to dive into the World of Warcraft this week.
Excellent.
Now, for those who may not know, can you tell us a little more about the game? It's basically just a huge online game that you can log onto, adventure in the world of Azeroth, and play one of the characters we're going to be talking about here today.
Excellent.
Let's see which races you'll have available to choose from for this challenge.
[gasps.]
Worgen.
Aw, this is so cool.
So start with goblins.
They're super snarky and exuberant.
They love explosives and fire, which may not necessarily always work out for them.
Next to these guys, you have the Draenei.
This is an alien race that's really just all about protection and making sure that people are okay.
Then we have Pandaren.
They're all about martial arts and home/family, but what they really love is brewing good ale and drinking good ale.
Next we have the Tauren.
They use druidic magic to protect their family and the world of Azeroth.
Trolls are super cool.
They're very laid-back.
But they're super-fierce warriors.
Kind of think of them as the headhunters of the islands.
And then finally we have the Worgens.
They actually originated from an ancient curse that turned them into these werewolf-like creatures ages ago.
They are super bloodthirsty, destructive, ferocious beasts.
So cool.
- Oh, my God.
- I know.
This is crazy.
I feel sick to my stomach, because after the judges used immunity on me, I want to prove that I deserve it, but I just don't have enough familiarity with World of Warcraft, so I already feel like I'm at a disadvantage.
All right, guys, it's time for you to choose a World of Warcraft race to adapt to the big screen.
We've drawn your names at random, and, Rob, you're up first.
[exciting music.]
All right, before you start working on your designs, we do have a surprise for you.
Chris here is going to come and meet with each of you to make sure that your designs are on the right track.
- All right.
- Nice.
- Cool.
- That's really cool.
Okay, guys, go ahead and select your models, and get started on your designs.
I'll stop by later on with my dad to check in on your progress.
- Good luck.
Bye.
- Bye! [exciting music.]
I'm actually very excited that you know so much about this, 'cause then you can tell me.
I will be happy to share with anyone.
Azeroth is where this is, Melissa? Yes.
I can't wait for Chris to come over so I can start to get some clarity on this stuff.
Right now, I'm leaning towards a voodoo black magic troll, but I definitely need to ask Chris about exceptions I can make in color schemes, and I just want to make sure I'm not breaking any rules.
- Hey, Mel.
- Hey.
- How you doing? - Good.
It's so great to meet you.
Yeah, it's great to meet you too.
You've got troll going on, huh? Yes.
I just want to ask you some questions.
Sure.
For the hair, can it be, like, a mix of green, blue, and purple instead of just red, or is stepping away from red a mistake? Is their hair always down, or can it be sort of styled? Can the hair, like, stick up less in the front? Can it be, like, that high? - You took a lot of notes.
- Yes.
Okay, trolls are proud of their hair, so they definitely really show it off.
Some of 'em braid it.
Some of 'em have it swept back.
Personally, I'd pick a color that's offset well against the skin tone.
Okay.
I'm really glad I wrote all these questions down.
I would have never remembered.
- I got the Worgen.
- Okay.
And I don't know the classes that the Worgen can play.
Basically, it's mage, priest, druid, and warlock.
- Oh, you can do druid.
- Yeah.
So I used to play as a druid, so I'm a little bit more familiar with that.
Then I might go the magic route, 'cause that's what I would play if I were playing it.
Definitely I'd think about the silhouette pose, to read that snout and the muzzle.
I'm going to have to keep it shorter so I can use her teeth, but I'm hoping that if I extend the wig back, that it would help create that profile.
That's a good idea.
And then I might make paw feet so if they stick out underneath the robes, that you can see that, and then claw hands.
Yeah, if you really want to double down on the claws and make those nice and burly and long, cool.
I'm very excited about this challenge.
This is very awesome.
So you got Draenei, man.
- Yeah, he seems pretty cool.
- Yeah.
I'm gonna try and fabricate the tail into the tentacles that he has.
Try to maybe not get too much texture in the tentacles.
I think that could potentially distract from some of the forehead detail.
Right.
In terms of class, I would probably say death knight.
Yeah, I did really like the way his face looks.
Death knights have their own custom lighter skin tone, because they essentially have died and come back to life to serve the Lich King.
They're not really a zombie.
They're just, like, an undead version of the Draenei.
So it is pale.
It's just, like, hints of blues.
- Yeah.
- Okay.
- So Tauren, huh? - Yep.
I was thinking of doing a elderly shaman type.
That's cool.
I'm gonna shrink that side profile down a little bit.
Cool.
You may want to consider some kind of a back form, because the hump's their most important feature.
And yeah, man, just big horns.
If you can pull that off, that could be styling.
And I want to do the three-fingered hands smaller and more realistic.
Yeah.
No, that makes a lot of sense.
- So I have the goblin.
- All right.
My model is female.
I don't know if there's a difference between the male and female.
Oh, yeah, the females are less rough-edged than the male goblins are.
- They're super cute.
- Okay.
See how she's got, like, upturned nose, big lips, great big eyes? Do you figure it'd be a bad direction to do, like, a combination of the two? Of the male and the female? I'd really just go full-bore towards either male or female.
Male or female.
Okay.
Well, thank you.
I'm excited to see what you come up with.
Definitely.
Hey, guys, it was great to meet you all.
Good luck with your characters.
all: - Thank you! - Thank you so much.
The first thing I need to do is sculpt this cowl.
[exciting music.]
Chris stressed the fact that the silhouette is really important to read as a Tauren.
And with the spine and how it curves back, the cowl can create that Tauren vibe.
I know it's a lot to do, and I'm worried about it actually working, but hopefully it comes out great.
As I'm sculpting, I'm really starting to feel like the face doesn't really have enough goblin quality, so I'm gonna accentuate the nose.
I want to make a big jaw, add in a lot of texture and wrinkles and folds more like the male goblin.
I thought you were molding your hand.
I need to.
Why? Maybe we can exchange goods.
I first need to cast some hands, because my character has three fingers, and Melissa needs hands, so we're going to mold hers twice.
For mine, we tape her hands together like this and mold them in alginate.
And for hers, we'll tape her hands together like this and mold them again.
All right, I going to be sculpting.
Okay.
Have fun.
Once that's done, I sit down to start sculpting the face, and I really want my face to just look like a troll face.
I want it to have a pointier nose and a pointier chin but not so far that they look cartoony, because this is still supposed to be a realistic version of the game.
Because Chris emphasized the importance of the tentacles on my Draenei, I really want to get that down, so I get cotton batting, and I cut the shapes, then add little bits of weight so that it has the movement that I want.
Are you making the tentacle doodads? I'm trying.
Then I roll it into a latex skin.
I like the overall look of it, and now I can work my sculpture around the tentacles.
For my Worgen druid, I want her to be this badass magic wielder but also be able to change into a battle cat and go into a fight.
[chuckles.]
I'm trying to sculpt a werewolf face with a shortened snout that the actor can still perform, but I'm not quite sure where to go with the texture in it, because if I add too much texture, it's going to look like an old-age makeup, and if I don't add enough texture, it's just going to look fake.
I'm just so wanting to do this challenge justice.
I'm a few hours in, and I'm really not liking this cowl.
It isn't looking realistic.
It just looks stupid.
This silhouette is the most important thing about this race, and I can't figure out how to make it work.
And knowing that the judges' immunity is no longer available, this is probably the worst possible time to be lost in a challenge, because now there's no safety net, and the smallest mistake could send me home.
I'm really not liking this cowl, and I feel like I'm wasting this entire day.
The face is the central point of this makeup, so I decide to wrap up the cowl and move on.
A Tauren's a bovine character, so I need to sculpt essentially a human-bull-cow hybrid and then add realism to that.
I really don't know where I'm going with the sculpt, but I just got to do it and see if it works.
[exciting music.]
Hey, guys.
We're here to check in on you.
- Hey.
- Hi, guys.
- How are you? - I picked the goblin.
Okay.
She's cute.
She is cute, so I'm trying to make her not as cute.
I'm trying to exaggerate some features and make her a little bit more stern.
I think you can take it further into the fantasy world.
The female goblin has more of a round face, and you can even raise your frontal bone - Okay.
- A little bit higher.
I picked the Worgen, which is a werewolf-type character as a druid.
I want it to look more mid-transformation or humanoid.
I'd like to see more muzzle on this, because it reads more of a male.
You're losing the softness.
Okay.
So you had first pick, and you got Yes.
The Tauren.
Basically, a giant bull minotaur.
I'm debating on whether I should bring this out so far that it does create the silhouette that I want, but I don't know if he'll be able to express through his face and move his mouth.
Don't hold back, because it looks good.
Yeah.
So you picked I have the Draenei.
I want him to be a death knight.
He's gonna be dead-looking, like this guy.
What about there? I made little tentacles out of just latex and cotton batting.
This looks like it's growing out of the chin.
Right.
So just build up my nasal labial fold more into-- Right, bring it right down into this.
It'll look like it's coming right out of the face.
Yeah.
Okay, yeah.
I like that.
- I picked a troll.
- Okay.
Basically, I want him to be able to still emote under it, and I want to make sure that it's not too cartoonish.
I think the direction you have going in is really nice, but you've lost your frown.
You need a little bit more of the character into it.
- Okay.
- All right, guys.
We're heading out.
Good luck to everybody.
all: Thank you.
[rock music.]
I'm sculpting the face, and it looks like a werewolf teddy bear thing.
I hate it so much! This isn't looking realistic, and this is just pissing me off.
This is not a good day, so I'm going to move on to the six fingers, because I need to do something that's not wasting time completely.
If you wanted to, like, not do something cool this challenge, like, I wouldn't be mad at you.
Well, it's not looking very cool, so you might get your wish.
No.
I don't agree.
I hate this.
30 minutes, everyone! [fast-paced rock music.]
That's time, everybody! [rock music.]
[lively rock music.]
Great.
Let's get to it.
All right.
We get to the lab, and I head straight into the mold room and open my mold, clean it out, get it ready, and I'm excited to see what it all looks like with the cowl.
With my cowl, I am trying to get the tentacles from underneath the ears behind the jaw and make sure that plate that comes up onto the top of the head is really beautiful and really symmetrical.
And I'm really just having fun with this one.
Mel.
I figured it out, Mel.
I figured it out.
- I figured it out.
- Did you? I figured out how my face is gonna look.
I'm widening the mouth so that it moves more natural, but I'm going into fight-or-flight mode right now.
I need to prioritize what is good enough to save my own ass.
I decide the silhouette I'm trying to achieve with the cowl, I can achieve with fabrication, so I'm going to scrap the cowl, because I need to focus my time on the face rather than the cowl.
I don't think I'm gonna have time to do my hands.
I think I'm just going to use the wrap.
I decide to ditch the hands, because I can wrap my hands in a gauze tomorrow.
Making it look like three fingers, I'm not willing to lose time working on them, so I'm sculpting the cowl.
My plan for the cowl is to make the ears go back on the head and stick out at the end.
That's good, I think.
Then I want to sculpt in the ridges where the hair will go so I can create the same silhouette of the hair without laying really long hair.
Today I had to sculpt and mold a face, along with two ears.
And after that, I have to quickly sculpt the hands for my Worgen, and they are just really [bleep.]
.
They are very quick sculpts.
They have no detail.
It's just I've got to get them done.
Ugliest mold ever coming right up.
Ahh! I'm running out of time, and I'm just trying not to think.
I'm just trying to get it done.
This is too stressful.
[fast-paced rock music.]
The first thing I want to do with the cowl is just knock out these ears as fast as possible.
The goblin ears in "World of Warcraft" are very big.
They stick out quite far.
I'm trying to make them very similar to what they do look like in the game, but I don't want to go as big, because that's going to be too comical.
So I'm going to scale it down a little bit to proportions of the human body, but I'm still going to go really big to sell the idea that they are goblin ears.
This hair idea's really good in my head.
I hope it works.
I am last-minute de-molding my hands.
I get one hand out just fine, and the other hand is stuck.
It's locked in place.
Okay.
Well, that seems fucked up.
Fuck.
I'm, like, way over my threshold for stress and anxiety.
Oh, I'm totally going to break this.
I just am, like, this close to a breakdown.
This is my dream challenge, and I just completely fucked up, and I'm probably gonna go home for this.
Fuck.
Oh, I'm totally going to break this.
I am last-minute de-molding my hands, and the mold is locked, so the only option I have is to chisel out my hand.
Fuck.
Oh, I lost two! The fingers break off the mold.
It's like, "Ugh! Everything is going wrong," and I'm just getting incredibly frustrated and pissed off.
The foam's going to really suck, but it's better to have something than nothing.
[sighs.]
While my mold is setting, I take advantage of the time, and I start fabricating the tail.
I think it'll be cool, and Chris definitely emphasized the importance of having one.
So I start by stippling out a giant sheet of latex and just repeat that same process from the tentacles but on a much larger scale.
Oh, my God.
Of course I got to test my tail out.
All right.
How's my walk? Is it very tail-like? I feel pretty goofy with the tail on, but I can see how it moves and wiggles and everything, so it's pretty fun.
Okay.
That's good.
[rock music.]
My Tauren lost one of his horns in battle, so I'm sculpting one full horn and one half horn.
15 minutes, everybody.
Shit.
In the little time that I have left, I need to get these horns molded, so I mix up a batch of silicone, but as I'm pouring it into the molds, I realize that there's not enough silicone to fill my big horn mold.
Time's up, everybody.
I don't have time to make another batch, so I'll have to run the broken horn twice tomorrow.
This changes my entire silhouette, and I feel like I failed yet again.
- All kinds of sweaty.
- I know.
Did you get everything done you wanted to? No.
Today was hard for me.
I was really homesick today.
I miss my family and my boyfriend, and it's hard.
My boyfriend, Chris, back home and my family have been such a huge support.
I really want to win and bring this home for them.
All right, guys, let's go home.
- Yay.
- Onward! [exciting music.]
Go! [laughter.]
Mmm.
The smell of foam.
I get to my foam, and it turns out great, which is awesome, because I have so much to do, but I have given myself a very regimented schedule, and as long as I stick to that, I should be okay.
How's it going, man? I'm Walter.
Nice to meet you.
You're a troll.
You can just relax for, like, an hour.
Sure.
I have way too much to do for my own good, so I'm running my broken horns and my fingers at the same time.
My first broken horn turns out great, but when I run it the second time, all of the resin sticks to the mold, peels apart, and breaks in half.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God! So now I have to run it a third time while running more fingers, and I still have to fabricate the shoulder piece.
It sucks.
- How's it going? - Nothing is going right.
No! [sighs.]
What I am doing is, I'm making paws.
I got to work on these paws.
They really help sell my character as a Worgen and as a resident of Azeroth.
I start running some poly foam, but when I release 'em [grunts.]
Come on.
They're awful.
Whoo! This is a mess.
Everything's going wrong.
By far and away, this is the worst application day I've had.
This was a lot harder than I thought it would be to do.
[laughs.]
Let's start laying hair.
My paint's done enough where I can start working on the hair, and I start in the back of the head so I can get my groove on before it's where the judges are going to see it.
Oh, no! Having all of this red hair everywhere is a nightmare for me.
This shit is fucking mangy right now.
But once I've trimmed and styled it, it's looking super badass.
I am feeling myself today.
[chuckles.]
- Looks pretty cool, right? - Yeah.
They are actually really cute little characters, but I wanted to make them more realistic, so it not gonna be that cute.
I want my goblin to have a Mohawk, so I'm going to pull the wig through the cowl, and after cutting the holes for my Mohawk, I do some pre-painting so then I don't paint around my wig, because I want to really bring out all those skin textures.
I'm going to work my way from dark to light.
And I think I overpainted that.
Oh, well.
I'm liking the brown, but I'm thinking that it's making everything a little dark.
But I'm running out of time, and I'm just going to have to run with it.
I've just got to get this on.
Okay.
[energetic rock music.]
Yeah.
I'm going to try and start painting it now.
The paint job really is the most important thing for me today.
I need to sell the look of the Draenei but also the look of the death knight, which means a paler skin tone.
So I start with a white base, and from there, I move in with a very light blue wash Walter, that looks really cool.
Thanks.
And move right into my first layer of airbrush modeling, and I just lay a veining pattern all over.
And from a distance, he's glowing.
I'm loving it.
I finally have everything I need to finish the makeup, but I don't have time to think about my paint job, so I just start throwing paint on this thing.
15 minutes! [suspenseful music.]
- That's time! - I think we're okay, dude.
High five.
Ugh! I'm looking at my character, and he does not look the way I had envisioned at all.
He looks like a cow man.
There's no back piece, no silhouette.
This is the bare bones of his entire design.
My character looks like shit.
There's just so many things that I did not finish, and I don't know if I can get everything done in Last Looks.
This is my worst-case scenario.
[tense music.]
I'm really disorganized right now.
When I get to Last Looks, I set up my model with my glue gun and just have her glue the paws to the flip-flaps while I'm gluing hair to her.
I can't even think.
I just have to get everything done.
I'm going to just start doing some highlights here.
My goblin is looking muddy, and I'm trying to bring up the highlights with my airbrush, but all the colors are washing out.
I just cannot bring this up, and I have to just move on and run with it.
I'm feeling really good about my makeup.
I managed to get some war paint on.
It's not great, but at least it's there, and overall as a character, he looks awesome.
All right.
Let's see if this works.
I don't have enough time to fabricate this headpiece, and I need to finish painting the horns, but it doesn't look like a Tauren or my original design, and I am so nervous.
Ten minutes, everyone! With minutes to go, I slip that tail into the wardrobe, and he looks complete.
He's such a cool character, man.
I love this.
Is that all right? That looks good.
Time! Oh! I wish I had more time to get my goblin how I wanted her.
I am afraid I may be going home.
Oh, my God, I feel like I'm going to pass out right now.
[suspenseful music.]
Welcome to the Face Off reveal stage.
You know our wonderful series judges.
Owner of Alchemy Studio Glenn Hetrick.
Good evening.
- Good evening.
- Hi, Glenn.
Oscar and Emmy award-winning makeup artist Ve Neill.
Hello, fabulous artists.
all: Hi, Ve.
Creature and concept designer Neville Page.
- Hello, everyone.
all: - Hello, Neville.
And finally we have a very special guest judge joining us tonight.
He's starred in some of Hollywood's biggest films and TV shows, like Pacific Rim and True Blood, and he plays Orgrim in the upcoming Warcraft film.
Please welcome the very talented Rob Kazinsky.
[applause.]
Thank you.
I'm really happy to see Rob Kazinsky.
He's, first of all, super handsome, really cool, and I'm excited to hear what he thinks of my troll.
So I understand you also play the game.
I did play the game.
I still play the game, but I played it to a very high standard for a very long time.
I was in a world top 100 guild, sponsored.
I actually got paid to play the game.
It was about a year of my life, 16 hours every single day sitting there in my underpants playing World of Warcraft.
It was probably the single best year of my entire life, so-- - I bet.
- Yeah.
It means a lot to me, this game.
Well, that doesn't make me nervous at all.
All right, are you ready to see some makeups? I am.
Let's take a look at your creations.
[suspenseful music.]
My goblin is looking muddy, and it's frustrating, because I wasn't able to complete my vision.
He's a badass, just like I imagined, and I'm extremely proud that I was able to accomplish so much.
I am so nervous.
My Tauren is not finished, and I don't think it looks like the video game.
My Worgen doesn't live up to what I wanted.
This should have been one of my best challenges.
I feel like I'm a bottom look, for sure.
My troll looks really cool.
I'm hoping the judges like what I did and they're happy they used the immunity on me.
All right, judges, why don't you go ahead and take a closer look? The paint work to me just feels so synthetic.
It's probably because of the extra sheen she put on it.
They're a bit grimier than this, a bit more torn up.
You know, for a goblin, she looks pretty.
Wow.
Walter did some serious stuff here today.
It feels right on the nose.
The accuracy from the tentacles on the face-- it's very, very good.
Turn.
I think there's a tail or something.
- It's a-- yeah.
- Wow.
Massive amount of work.
Massive.
I like the treatment of these little spots that he added.
Nice little breakup.
Yeah.
Not a big fan of that, but there are so many great forms going on.
There's a regality in the Tauren that he's managed to get with this.
Can you open all the way, as if you're screaming at us? Ahh! What does this mean? What does that mean? This lower jowl form feels inaccurate.
I'm worried the judges hate the direction I took.
Looks to me like she didn't finish this.
It looks like she had spots here she was gonna glue whiskers in.
Yeah.
This is my ideal challenge, and I feel like I really blew it.
All right, guys, it's time to get on Twitter and tell us who made your favorite World of Warcraft character using #FaceOff This lower jowl form feels pretty inaccurate.
I know that my Worgen looks really bad up close.
This is my ideal challenge, and if I go home on this, it's just gonna really suck.
I like the profile more than I do the straight-on.
- Profile's gorgeous.
- Mm-hmm.
I like this idea that she has these white stripes here.
It's almost like war paint.
I wonder if she's done all of the work on the hair, because that feels a lot like the game.
Oh, yeah.
It's the favored troll haircut.
It's probably one of the harder characters to actually do.
All right, guys.
The judges would like to hear from each of you before making their decisions.
Rob, you're up first.
Oh, God.
Hey, Rob.
Please tell us about your character.
My Tauren used to be a great warrior.
He suffered an injury in battle and then became the shaman of his community.
What you're seeing here is my worst-case scenario.
For a worst-case scenario, I think it's phenomenal.
Your sculpt is very, very beautiful.
The proportions of the face and the shoulders work extraordinarily well for me.
Thank you.
I love the treatment of the mouth especially.
This whole area here is so well-realized.
It's probably one of the best muzzled sculptures I have ever seen on this show.
Thank you.
I would love to see your best-case scenario, 'cause it's got to be unbelievable, 'cause this is incredible.
Thank you.
What you've done with the face is brilliant, but this is not a Tauren to me.
No.
Even a simple thing of just adding a nose ring would have made it more Tauren.
You've obviously got enormous talent, but I don't think it's accurate.
Rob, please step back.
- You're a dick.
- I know.
I feel like Simon Cowell.
[chuckles.]
Yvonne, you're up.
- Hi, Yvonne.
- Hi.
Please tell us about your Warcraft goblin.
I decided to do the female version, and I wanted to showcase that they are explosion experts.
She looks like pea soup from here.
I'm disappointed, because this was a chance to really go wild and do something kooky-looking on this character.
And I think it's a safe, muddy makeup, honey.
Okay.
You've missed some opportunities in regard to proportion, because the face doesn't feel goblin-y.
It's just a bit too synthetic-looking.
It doesn't feel ugly enough, gritty enough, or dirty enough to be a goblin.
- Yvonne, please step back.
- Thanks, Krista.
Mel, please come forward.
- Hello, Mel.
- Hello.
Tell us about your troll character, please.
So I don't know a ton about them, but I do know they have voodoo qualities about them.
Hair is super important.
So I wanted to make sure I was including that in my decisions.
I think you've succeeded.
Can you turn sideways? Such a beautiful profile, and I can see the game character fully realized here.
It feels so purposeful and intended.
Thank you.
It's a great depiction of a troll.
The Mohawk is accurate.
The skin's right.
It's like it stepped out of the game.
Thank you.
Did you style the hair? Yeah.
That's all laid hair.
Wow.
That's a huge amount of work.
I know, and I'm really bad at laying hair.
Not at all.
No.
I think that's probably one of the greatest successes of your makeup.
It really looks like it came from that world.
Thank you.
Mel, please step back.
- Thank you.
- Good job.
Walter, please step to the center.
- Hey, Walter.
- How's it going? Tell me about your Draenei.
I wanted him to be a death knight, so I wanted him to look kind of scary, and I wanted to make sure I followed some of the important features-- the tentacles, the plates that come up the head, and the tail.
What you've done here is beyond what I would have expected somebody to be able to do.
The whole thing is wildly accurate.
The death knight armor, the Frostmourne, the coloration of the skin-- you've absolutely nailed it.
Thank you.
The paint job is gorgeous.
The forms in the face are beautiful, the shape of the head, everything.
- Just exquisite.
- Thank you.
This is a very elegant interpretation from game into reality.
Simply put, you've nailed it.
Thank you.
Walter, please step back.
Melissa, you're up.
Hello.
- Hi, Melissa.
- Hi.
Tell us about your Worgen character.
Well, I tried to create the character that I would make in the game, so I made a Worgen druid that can transform into a cat to fight or a bear to take damage.
It feels really rough technically.
Yes.
As much as you attempted to give the full package, the inclusion of feet and hands caused you to fall down in a couple of places, and the ears don't feel like they're in the right place.
So none of the things really have the level of detail that I'm looking for at this point in the competition.
It looks like you didn't finish your makeup.
You should have used more texturing to give it more life, and it doesn't look very realistic.
Yeah.
You have had one of the hardest jobs here in making a functional snout.
Obviously, that's the one thing holding you back, but I think everything apart from the snout is really, really accurate.
Thank you.
Melissa, please step back.
Thank you so much.
All right, guys, please head back to the makeup room while the judges deliberate.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
All right, judges, so why don't we talk about tonight's looks and start with your favorites? What about Rob? The makeup's almost flawless in terms of its technical execution.
The texture on the nose-- I mean, it looked like a bull's nose.
It was just unbelievably well done.
He's obviously very, very skilled.
However, it was a bipedal cow instead of being a Tauren.
All right, Let's move on to Mel.
I think a lot of Warcraft fans at home are gonna be rooting for this one tonight.
There's such a genuine integrity to the design and to the source material.
It's a good, classic execution of a troll.
The profile was done rather well.
She laid that whole Mohawk on; that was awesome.
That's probably the best part of that whole makeup.
All right, what about Walter's work? Wow.
He accomplished so much this week.
It was really amazing.
And also a tail in his spare time.
He obviously had so much time left over Just sitting around.
That he was just like, "What shall I do now? Uh, let's make a tail.
" And so specifically making it a death knight.
It could have walked onto the set of Warcraft, and you would have believed that was a Draenei.
All right, so let's move on to the makeups that didn't work so well for you this week.
Let's start with Yvonne.
There was no vibrance; she just did a very plasticky-looking pea green goblin.
And those ears are just as big and blocky and as cartoony as they could possibly be.
It looked like a cheap Halloween mask.
It was shiny.
The hair wasn't woven in.
It was just a bad job.
All right, let's move on to Melissa.
Not my favorite.
It falls down because of the blockiness around the nose, and the mouth felt very amateurish.
She couldn't complete the fingers and the feet and the face at a level that allows her to be in the top.
There were some mistakes on the face.
I can't argue with any of that.
But as a full package, I think it was the most complete character straight from the game.
All right, then.
Judges, have you chosen our four semi-finalists? - Yeah.
- I believe so.
Okay, let's bring them back out.
[suspenseful music.]
All right, Glenn.
Tell us about the top looks.
Rob, despite some of your time management issues, your sculpture was graceful, and the character felt realistic.
Mel, although you didn't have game-specific knowledge, you nailed the troll aesthetic, and the hair work was great.
Walter, you took on way too much this week, but it didn't seem to matter, because the sculpting, the painting, and the fabrication were all brilliant.
So who's the winner of this challenge? The winner of tonight's challenge is [suspenseful music.]
So who's the winner of this challenge? The winner of tonight's challenge is [suspenseful music.]
Walter.
What an impressive week for you.
There was true harmony between your Draenei concept and its execution.
Upward trajectory as we head towards the finale.
Well done.
Thank you so much.
Getting my second win means the world to me.
Heading into the semi-finals, I have a little bit of momentum on my side, and I could win this.
- Walter, congratulations.
- Thank you.
You, Rob, and Mel can all head back to the makeup room.
Thank you, guys.
[upbeat music.]
All right, guys, that means you are on the bottom this week, and one of you will be going home tonight.
Please step forward.
[suspenseful music.]
All right, Glenn.
Tell us about the bottom looks tonight.
Yvonne, despite capturing some of the tinkerer spirit of your goblin, the paint job got muddy, and some of the proportions were out of whack.
Melissa, the head-to-toe captured the Worgen dead on, but that same commitment also left your makeup suffering a little bit on a technical level.
So who's going home tonight? The person going home tonight is Yvonne.
Sorry.
It was a strong showing from everyone, and your goblin lacked a bit of the realism and the believability that we were looking for tonight.
Yvonne, I'm so sorry, but you have been eliminated.
That means, Melissa, you are safe this week and can head back to the makeup room.
You did good.
Yvonne, you have great spirit, and you're an amazing artist.
This is only the beginning of the rest of your career right now.
Thank you so much.
Yvonne, it's been a joy having you here with us.
Please head back to the makeup room and pack up your kit.
- Thank you.
- Good night, Yvonne.
- Good luck, sweetie.
- Good luck.
I'm really sad that I'm leaving the competition this close to the finale.
But I'm really happy that I made it this far.
, goblin and me are going home.
Oh, no.
I've had so much fun along the way.
And I've proven to myself that I can follow my dream as a make-up artist.
I'm leaving here with my head held high, this is definitely just the beginning for me, and I'm exited for the future.
