Angel & Demons

[grunting.]
[Man on TV.]
We have breaking news on the latest Grim Reaper slaying which continues to have all of Cuesta Verde on edge.
The latest victim was just found in the downtown area.
We now go live to News 10's Veronica Chung on the scene with more.
[Veronica.]
Thanks, Steve.
I'm here with veteran CVPD homicide detective Carter Judson, who has the details of this latest gruesome murder.
[Carter.]
The body was found at 2:00 this morning.
Do you have any suspects yet, Detective? The victims wounds and the MO leads us to believe that this murder was committed by the same suspect-- Is this the work of the Grim Reaper? Well, that's a name that the media's using that we don't particularly like, but yes, yes.
We feel that this perpetrator is the same one that has committed the last few acts of violence.
And obviously,we're doing everything we can to apprehend this perpetrator and get this sort of violent behavior off of our streets as fast as possible.
We have a full-time crime unit that is strictly dedicated-- [no audible dialogue.]
[moaning.]
Not so hard.
Shhhhh! I'm not paying you to talk, okay? [muffled grunting.]
[phone ringing.]
[Woman panting.]
Yeah? [no audible dialogue.]
No, you called me.
Don't you talk to me in that tone of voice.
You know how late it is? No, I didn't ask for any excuses.
I didn't ask for any fucking excuses.

The animal kingdom is a fiercely violent domain.
Animals kill for food, for territory, and for survival.
But there is one animal that's known to kill for pleasure-- man.
We live in a world populated by angels and demons.
You're about to meet both.
I saw you on TV last night.

You didn't even know this girl.
She was just-- She was just some girl.
She died in my arms, Carter.
She knew she was dying, and there was nothing I could do to help her.
I was the last face she would ever see, and I didn't even know her name.
I'm not saying it wasn't a fucked-up situation.
But we've seen it before, right? Even though this poor girl had just turned 18, and her blood was all over me, I should've been used to it by now.
Is that what you're saying? Her name was Greta Lupino.
The department shrink said it was unhealthy to remember her name.
She's dead.
[sighs.]
But not for me.
I learned everything I could about her family.
Her mother died in a hit-and-run, left her with nothing.
She had to sell herself on the street to survive until-- until she took the wrong guy down the wrong alley.
She said she could see someone, but there was nobody there.
And the look on her face-- it was likerelief.
She started to tell me something, but all I heard was "um," and she was gone.

Mentioned the eyes again.
The eyes? Yeah, yeah.
Every witness says that they've never seen eyes like the Reaper.
Dark as night, piercing, soulless, et cetera, et cetera.
Eyes are the windows to the soul.
You got that right.
Matthew, Chapter 6, Verses 22 and 23, right? Yeah.
[chuckles.]
I was held up in a hotel room, and all I had to read was a Bible.
This place is gorgeous.
You haven't seen anything yet.
[chuckles.]
I'm sure.
You know, you remind me of someone.
Yeah? My ex-girlfriend from college-- Virginia.
Funny thing was, she was actually from Virginia.
I hope she didn't break your heart.
[elevator bell dings.]
She died.
She's dead now.

I'm so sorry.
It was a long time ago.

[Janet.]
Mr.
Ryan.
The whole city is terrified by this Grim Reaper.
It is bad for business.
Three people are dead.
We each have our own priorities.
Look, what I heard is, the Reaper makes the victims suffer, right? The first wound is nonfatal, yeah.
Oh, no.
They die scared.
They get a chance to see themselves bleed out.
I'm assuming you have a point here.
A person like that, someone who gets a thrill out of killing-- you can't control a person like that.
And if you can't control them? They need to be put in a cage or, preferably, six feet under.
So you just make sure that this psycho is out of my clubs and off of my streets.
Your streets? Mmm.
You don't seem like a man who needs to pay for sex.
Sex isn't the most important part.
Then what is? Honestly? Loneliness.
You can't be lonely-- a guy like you.
Everybody gets lonely.
You don't? Since I got to the city, maybe.
Well, for the next hour, neither one of us needs to be lonely.
I'll give you $1,000 cash.
And if that's not enough of an enticement, room service has the best crème brûlée in the city.
Huh? [Janet.]
So you were saying you saw someone.
I didn't just see someone, I saw the Grim Reaper, up close.
When? They left about an hour ago, maybe less.
"They"? [Janet.]
Are you saying you saw the Grim Reaper leave with someone? Do you have any idea where they went? I heard the guy say something out the Hotel Excelsior.
[Carter.]
Thank you.

I got mugged a few years back.
Carry this with me ever since.
Keep going.
All through the night In crimson red Above her head Night girl [continues.]
You know, it's funny.
The guy who mugged me-- they caught him.
You know what happened? They gave him three years-- three years in jail for breaking my nose and taking my wallet.
But if a woman reaches into your chest and tears out your heart, if she ruins your fucking life and leaves you broken and shattered, that's okay, 'cause there's no law against that.
Okay, that's perfectly legal.
You know, I should go.
You're not going anywhere.
We just started getting to know each other.
Come on.
Keep going.
Night girl I need you to understand me.
I need you to understand.
We were together for two years-- two years-- and they were the best two years of my life.
Oh, God, I loved her so much.
She was so beautiful and sexy, just like you.
But I didn't know her.
Not really.
You see, I had this roommate-- this troll named Brian.
He was an economics major.
As soon as she saw him, I knew.
I knew.
I couldn't believe it.
I couldn't fucking believe it, but I knew that she was gonna betray me.
I waited.
I bided my time.
I waited so long that I started to think that I was crazy.
Where you going? Huh? I thought I told you I wanted to finish my story, and I want you to listen.
You got that? You need to listen! You know what? I'm gonna get my money's worth.
I want you to take off the rest of your clothes right now.
I'm gonna watch you.
Now, where was I? Oh.
Virginia and I.
We used to have plain-Jane vanilla sex.
It was boring.
But with him, I saw a whole new side of her.
She was different.
She was like an animal.
She was voracious.
She did shit with him that I couldn't even imagine.
It was dirty.
And that's when I realized I only knew her when she was with me.
That wasn't who she really was.
When she was with someone else, she was completely different.
What did you do? Go on.
Tell me.
You want me to tell you? Ah.
I learned not to trust little bitches like you.
I learned to watch you.
Oh.
Let's get this off.
Now, I'm gonna finish my story.
Ask me what I did.
Did you kill her? Have you seen a man, well dressed, come in with a young girl? Did you kill her? Is that what you're trying to tell me? I wondered.
I wondered, just how many personalities could this woman fit inside of her? You know? And which one-- which one of these personalities was the real her? If you strip all the other ones away, which one was the real her, and how could I find out? So that's when I thought, well, maybe if I scare her.
If I scare her to death, then Il be able to tell which one she truly is.
Oh, God-- And that's when I saw.
I saw in her eyes.
I saw her soul.
[groans.]
[panting.]
[cocks gun.]
Do you want to know who I really am? You're the one they've been looking for.
No.
[screaming.]
[screaming continues.]
Don't kill me! Don't kill me! Don't kill me! [bell dings.]
Call for backup.
I'm going down.
Gotcha, gotcha.
[groaning.]
[groaning continues.]
[bell dings.]
Why me? Why me? The Grim Reaper, I presume? There's nothing grim in what I do.
Nothing at all.
I can't let you go.
I've never killed anyone innocent, but there is always a first time.
Wait a second.
I know you.
I saw you on TV.
You're the one who tried to save Greta.
I didn't do anything.
I just held her, that's it.
You did more than that.
You cared.
The man I shot-- the man upstairs-- What about him? He's the animal that killed Greta.
And I should know, 'cause I'm her sister.
[gasps.]
The paramedics are on their way.
What about the Reaper? She got away.
I can see her.
Who? Who do you see? Virginia.
[exhales.]
Victim was Charles Solomon.
He was a stockbroker.
He was with Lehman before the crash.
Oh, and we found out who Virginia was.
It was his ex-girlfriend from college.
She died three years ago-- car accident.
I guess he never stopped loving her.
And I've been thinking about what you said.
About what? About Greta.
You said her mother died, right? A hit-and-run.
Well, maybe-- maybe she didn't say "um" before she died.
Maybe she said "Mom.
" I don't know.
I mean, I could be wrong.
No, I hope not.
I hope you're-- I hope you're right.
By the way, did you get me that number I asked for for Greta's sister? Couldn't.
Greta Lupino didn't have a sister.
[Man on TV.]
Last night, the Grim Reaper struck again and claimed another-- [Mr.
Ryan moans.]
[sighs.]
Don't you know who the hell I am? Don't you know who I am? I hear you like to hurt girls.
[gunshot.]
I guess these city streets are all I know It's all that's left of long ago And down the alley there's a runnin' child She's hurryin' home to escape the wild And hot Mean city streets Sayin' "No, Johnny, no, it isn't right"
