Something took my breath away and then went through me.

Here we are in Joplin, Missouri.
We've noticed odd things in the mirror.
There were over 160 people that died.
- I just wanted to help.

My entire body is on fire.

It's dealing with children and stuff, so I'm a little concerned here.
Hi, John, my name's Charlie Gascich.
I'm the Executive Director of Whatsoever Community Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
We act as a safe haven for the children and the families of our community.
John, some of the things that have happened here are very disturbing.
And it's escalated to the point where it's getting kind of scary.
We've heard footsteps going up the steps when no one's in the building.
The children see shadows of little girls that aren't really there.
We've had a young lady that was touring the building with us, who felt a presence go completely through her.
It's coming to the point where we're losing kids and we cannot let that happen.
If parents are afraid to bring their kids to the center, we're not doing our job and we're not fulfilling our mission.
We really, really would ask you to come and help us with this difficult situation.

He seems very concerned, so I think it's important that we get there to see what we can find out.
Absolutely.

You know, kids are having experiences.
The parents are worried about their children.
So, there's a lot going on.
You know, there's a theory that children possibly are having paranormal experiences that adults aren't because they haven't been tainted by society's views.
Basically, they have a more open and accepting mind.
Oh, absolutely, Jess.
Also, the building that houses the community center has had various boxing programs throughout the years.
I mean, all the way since the Depression.
You know, you're in a rough part of the town, so we really gotta get in there and check into this place.

This building was originally a schoolhouse.
It was built in 1889.
We took it over in 1941.
Mm-hmm.
Lately, there's a lot of things that we can't explain, and it's affecting staff and kids.
When the kids go out and play, they'll come back in here, they'll come up the steps, line up to get a drink of water.
There's been occasions where the kids look up these steps right here, and say, what are those kids doing up there? And the teachers will say, there's no one up there.
And the kids will say, no, there's two little girls almost all in white at the top of these steps.
Children are very sensitive and they do pick up on spirit, but they also have very wild imaginations.
So, it's important to get in here and try and figure out if there is anything happening on a paranormal level.
Charlie, do you know anything about the history of the building? Was there any tragedies or anything that could've taken place? - When Whatsoever was started in 1941.
- Mm hmm.
This was a sight for unwed mothers.
And so mothers would have their children here.
One would assume that there was some issues there with children passing away, and we actually have some artifacts.
This is one of the stirrups from one of the tables for examinations and such.
During that time, I think, it was extremely stressful to be an unwed mother, to find that you're pregnant, and have nowhere to go.
So, there could be a lot of stress, a lot of sadness attached to that.
One night we had some mothers here.
One of the young ladies felt like a spirit go completely through her.
She was just horrified.
I was with a group of people and we were walking through a hallway.
And everybody had went ahead and I was standing back, and right when they did that, I felt somebody grab my arms.
Something took my breath away and then went through me.
When you lost your breath, do you think it was more from the fear or - No.
- You feel like something took it? Yes, I feel like something took it out of me.
I felt like it was a big guy.
- Okay.
- I felt like crying.
It was, it was really emotional.
This is the basement.
When we first moved in here, it served many purposes.
But the mainstay has been the amateur boxing program.
And we still have the original ring that was put in here in 1942.
On more than one occasion, we've come down and these bags Will be doing this.
They'll be swinging just like that.
They'll just swing back and forth on their own.
Have you ever witnessed that? Oh, yes, several times, and every once and a while These are sparring bells and lights They use to time their sparring sessions.
And during the middle of the day when no one's down here, we'll hear them go off in the preschool area.
Just a hear a ding-ding go off by itself.
Have you ever tried to look for anything logical like a short in the electric? On more than one occasion.
Okay, and it's not on a timer or anything? No.
All right, Charlie, I'm gonna get the team in here.
We're gonna do all we can to figure out exactly what is happening.

Parents are afraid to let their children come here.
People working in the center are even concerned.
So, it's gonna be very important for us to get in there and find out, exactly what is going on.

One of the reports we heard involved a shadow form, moving through the hallway and allegedly through one of the visitors here.
Now because of that, tonight I'm gonna deploy the spectral detector.
Essentially, what this is is a trigger for a still camera.
If there's a change in heat anywhere in front of the detector, it'll cause the camera to take a picture.
Okay.

Okay, now anytime it detects a thermal change - It's gonna go off.

And that is pretty bright, so we should be able to see that wherever we are.

Last night, my dad captured what could be the figure of a boxer in a photograph.
Jason and I did some research into boxer-related deaths.
And found out there was a fighter here in 1940s named Tex, who died suspiciously after a match.
So, we're going to meet with Tim Phillips.
He's an expert on the history of boxing, and we're hoping he can give us some more information.
We came across this article about a young amateur boxer, that died from really strange circumstances.
Is there a way to kind of explain something like this happening? Boxing, of course, was a huge sport in Kansas City.
Unfortunately, what came with a lot of the boxing was a lot of gambling.
Kansas City had a lot of organized crime behind, some of the results of those boxing matches back in the day.
Wow.
They would have men that went out and tell a boxer, hey, take a dive in the third round.
We're gonna pay you a lot of money, and we'll be happy, some of the gamblers will be happy, everybody will be happy.
If they didn't take a dive If you don't, then you're going to meet with an untimely end.
- And it could cost you your life? - Could cost you your life.
Wow.
Is the phenomena at the Whatsoever Center connected to criminal activity? Or to the boxer Tex? We need answers tonight.

After finding these items last night, I'm taking 'em to an antiques expert.
Here name is Pam.
I'm hoping she can shed some light on what these items actually are.
You got some great pieces.
I'll go with the first one.
This is smelling salts.
Okay.
It's a chemical compound And they used these in arousing consciousness.
A lot of athletes will use these, particularly boxers, when they're knocked unconscious or semiconscious they would utilize this.
Okay.
They were wildly used during World War Two, but have not been used as much as of late.
And then the other item you have It looks like it was Phenobarbital.
- Which dates back to the 1900s.
- Mm hmm.
And it was used to treat epilepsy.
It really was the only medication back then used to treat seizures.
This form was liquid, so it was injected directly into the bloodstream.
And it would've been used for somebody who had severe seizures.
Anyone who took this type of prescription really relied on this all day.
Oh, okay.
So, when would you feel this was really popular, this, this drug? I would say this was really common probably 1930s, 1940s.
All right.
I'm beginning to wonder now was this medicine associated with Tex? We're probably never gonna know for sure, but I got my suspicions.
I'm gonna have Aimee dig even deeper to see what she can find out.
Hopefully, she'll come back with some good information.

We were able to come up with some evidence to support some of the stories that you were sharing with us.
Right now I have a photo that I'd like to show you that was captured, up on the second level.

That, that's amazing.
Now, I can't honestly tell you if it's male or female, but it definitely looks like it was starting to take some type of form.
That is so similar to what I've seen up there before.
Chills.
Jason and I decided to do some research and we went through the archives to see if we could find anyone who's died on the property or any tragedies.
And to our surprise, we found that there was a young boxer.
His name was Tex.
He was a promising lightweight contender, who many thought had a shot at becoming a champion.
One night he lost a match and went back to his hotel room, and he was later found dead in is bathtub.
That brings me into the second night of our investigation.
Well, we ended up coming down here, and we had pulled something out that I would like to show you right now.
What we were able to find out today is that, this particular type of medicine Was used for seizures.
When we first learned about Tex, we thought that his death seemed suspicious.
And then we learned about the hand that organized crime had in boxing, in this area and we thought for sure they were connected.
What we were able to find out was that it wasn't murder.
It wasn't suspicious after all.
He actually died because he had epilepsy.
So, he basically had his career cut Extremely short.
And that could be why you have such strong activity down here around the ring and around the bags.
Wow.
And he could be reaching out by choking an individual, pushing an individual, because that's all he knows.
- I'm kind of speechless.
I'm sorry, but - No, no, that's okay.
That's incredible.
One thing I do need to ask you Sir, is What would you like to do at this point in time with these items? I trust your judgment.
A lot of these items that have negative energy, I always recommend to people to please remove.
I don't want the kids being affected when they're down here.

If the boxer's spirit is struggling to pass on.

Hey, guys, here we are in Joplin, Missouri.
As all of you know, I got an email from Bob and he's very concerned about his family.
There's a lot of activity occurring in here.
Choking, pushing, shadow forms, and it's already reached a point where him and his kids and his wife are terrified.
Now, we know in 2011 they had a major tornado that went through here.
It was devastating.
All these buildings look like they're brand new.
Man, they all are.
They're slowly putting it back together.
You know, a lot of people were killed there was a lot of devastation, and things got disturbed.
Can that activate different types of energy that have been dormant? Absolutely.
We've seen time and time again.
So, it's gonna be important to get in there and kind of figure out What is exactly going on.

So, Bob, tell us exactly what has been happening here with your house.
Well, my family and I moved into the house - In um, 2001.
- Mm hmm.
And very shortly thereafter we noticed some strange things happening.
Voices heard, shadow Type apparitions.
And it seems like all of that type of activity has, become more intense over the past year and a half to two years since, you know, the tornado happened.
I know everybody here in Joplin had jumped in to help.
Sure.
The night the tornado, it was a Sunday night, I was working.
My offices were located about 200 yards east of Saint John's Hospital.
Which took a direct hit.
After the tornado passed, I ended up walking to a nursing home facility that had been destroyed.
And I pulled 19 people out of the rubble.
Five of those were, were fatalities.
They were already deceased.
This is the entryway and the stairwell.
This is where my son, saw a shadow figure On the landing of the staircase.
And you've had some unnerving experiences here I understand.
Correct.
I was laying down on my bed here and All of a sudden, you know, I wake up in the middle of the night and I look over there's this man, you know? And he has two holes where his eyes should be.
And he was just, like, staring at me intensely for, you know, it had to be a minute or so, and then he just disappeared out of thin air.
Can you show me exactly where the figure that you saw was? Yeah, he was right down there.
How did you feel in that moment? Helpless.
I just know he was Bad.
I just feel agitated in this room.
- The room is shaking.
- What was that? It's spreading! What the [Bleep.]
is that? I didn't want to cry, John.
My daughter, when she's sleeping, she's been awoken by the bed shaking.
She felt like she was attacked.
I wanted to mention the mirror up here.
When the family gets together, we'll take family picture and, you know, the entryway is a nice place to do that, where we can put people on the stairs.
Later on when we were looking at the pictures, we've noticed Odd things in, in the mirror.
It's different in different pictures.
Sometimes it's just wavy lines.
It's not consistent.
I don't know what it is.
I don't know how to explain it.
One of our theories that we apply to mirrors is that, between the glass and the filament, they used to be painted on because that how it was years ago And that's the way that mirror is.
- It's painted on? - Yes, Sir.
Okay, so that tells me you could be looking at something from the 1800s.
Energy or spirit can literally get trapped in there.
Wow, did not know that.
We're in the attic and a couple of weird things have happened up here.
My daughter and I were up here.
- She was standing beside me.
- Mm hmm.
And at one point we both reacted At the same time.
It felt like someone rushed through us.
And as you can tell, this is kind of the overflow from the house, and I don't know if you've ever seen one.
Do you know what this is? Yeah, it's an old iron and this is the type that they would put the coal in it.
Right.
You think about it, Bob, this could have been very dangerous.
If it did spill over and that charcoal hit the floor - It could start a fire quite quick.

In this investigation, I'm gonna do something a little differently.
I have to try and figure out is it the house, an item, is it the family, or the land? So, getting a second opinion, to me, is gonna be very valuable.

I decided to bring in a very good friend of mine, Chip Coffey.
He's a psychic and medium.
I need to give this family some information so they can move forward.
I don't know that I pick up a lot right in this area.

Chip picked up on a lot of spirit energy in the same areas, where Bob and his family have reported activity.
So for tonight's investigation I have Brian and Chris focusing on the stairway.
While Jess, Jason, and I investigate upstairs.

I'm gonna put it at the top shining down here so that it's gonna illuminate this entire side of the wall.
Now, Bob's son reported something that he feels was pretty solid on the staircase.
The laser pen is going to emit a grid of light dots all over the wall.
Now, if something passes in front of it, one or more of the dots will get blocked out.
Anything that's coming up, down, or to the side of this staircase has to pass this area.
Yeah, if anything's moving in this area, we'll catch it.

I need to find out more about how this disaster affected this area.
I'm meeting with a local author, Lisa.
Lisa has researched a lot of paranormal activity here in Joplin.
So, I'm hoping she can share some information with me.
May 22, 2011, was the most devastating thing I think anyone here has ever seen.
The destruction path was almost a mile wide and 13 miles long.
In some places, every building for blocks was just demolished.
There were over 160 people that died.
I mean, it was just horrible.
Absolutely horrible.
Has there been any increase in activity since the tornado went through? - Yes, actually there has been.
- Okay.
Particularly people that had contact with the tornado, and involved in the cleanup and so forth.
They're having a lot of shadow people, unexplained noises, footsteps.
A particular first-responder that I've worked with Has had all kinds of activity in his house, and he doesn't live in the tornado area.
- Really? - Yes.
They've been affected dramatically.
Bob was very much involved with the tornado.
Those things can remain with you.
Could this be causing some of the activity? Or is there something attached to an item here? I'm not quite sure at this point in time, but I want to dig in a little deeper.

That's the only thing that could be reflecting, dude.

Normally, I bring this object to an expert.
But in this case, I think there's more to this haunting.

There's been occasions where the kids look up these steps right here, and say, what are those kids doing up there? And the teachers will say, there's no one up there.
And the kids will say, no, there's two little girls almost all in white at the top of these steps.
Children are very sensitive and they do pick up on spirit, but they also have very wild imaginations.
So, it's important to get in here and try and figure out if there is anything happening on a paranormal level.
Charlie, do you know anything about the history of the building? Was there any tragedies or anything that could've taken place? - When Whatsoever was started in 1941.

This was a sight for unwed mothers.
And so mothers would have their children here.
One would assume that there was some issues there with children passing away, and we actually have some artifacts.
This is one of the stirrups from one of the tables for examinations and such.
During that time, I think, it was extremely stressful to be an unwed mother, to find that you're pregnant, and have nowhere to go.
So, there could be a lot of stress, a lot of sadness attached to that.
One night we had some mothers here.
One of the young ladies felt like a spirit go completely through her.
She was just horrified.
I was with a group of people and we were walking through a hallway.
And everybody had went ahead and I was standing back, and right when they did that, I felt somebody grab my arms.
Something took my breath away and then went through me.
When you lost your breath, do you think it was more from the fear or - No.

I felt like it was a big guy.

Jason and I did some research into boxer-related deaths.
And found out there was a fighter here in 1940s named Tex, who died suspiciously after a match.

We came across this article about a young amateur boxer, that died from really strange circumstances.
Is there a way to kind of explain something like this happening? Boxing, of course, was a huge sport in Kansas City.
Unfortunately, what came with a lot of the boxing was a lot of gambling.
Kansas City had a lot of organized crime behind, some of the results of those boxing matches back in the day.

They would have men that went out and tell a boxer, hey, take a dive in the third round.
We're gonna pay you a lot of money, and we'll be happy, some of the gamblers will be happy, everybody will be happy.
If they didn't take a dive If you don't, then you're going to meet with an untimely end.

A lot of athletes will use these, particularly boxers, when they're knocked unconscious or semiconscious they would utilize this.

They were wildly used during World War Two, but have not been used as much as of late.
And then the other item you have It looks like it was Phenobarbital.
- Which dates back to the 1900s.

And it was used to treat epilepsy.
It really was the only medication back then used to treat seizures.
This form was liquid, so it was injected directly into the bloodstream.
And it would've been used for somebody who had severe seizures.
Anyone who took this type of prescription really relied on this all day.

So, when would you feel this was really popular, this, this drug? I would say this was really common probably 1930s, 1940s.

I'm beginning to wonder now was this medicine associated with Tex? We're probably never gonna know for sure, but I got my suspicions.

And to our surprise, we found that there was a young boxer.
His name was Tex.
He was a promising lightweight contender, who many thought had a shot at becoming a champion.
One night he lost a match and went back to his hotel room, and he was later found dead in is bathtub.
That brings me into the second night of our investigation.
Well, we ended up coming down here, and we had pulled something out that I would like to show you right now.
What we were able to find out today is that, this particular type of medicine Was used for seizures.
When we first learned about Tex, we thought that his death seemed suspicious.
And then we learned about the hand that organized crime had in boxing, in this area and we thought for sure they were connected.
What we were able to find out was that it wasn't murder.
It wasn't suspicious after all.
He actually died because he had epilepsy.
So, he basically had his career cut Extremely short.
And that could be why you have such strong activity down here around the ring and around the bags.

And he could be reaching out by choking an individual, pushing an individual, because that's all he knows.

Choking, pushing, shadow forms, and it's already reached a point where him and his kids and his wife are terrified.
Now, we know in 2011 they had a major tornado that went through here.
It was devastating.
All these buildings look like they're brand new.
Man, they all are.
They're slowly putting it back together.
You know, a lot of people were killed there was a lot of devastation, and things got disturbed.
Can that activate different types of energy that have been dormant? Absolutely.
We've seen time and time again.
So, it's gonna be important to get in there and kind of figure out What is exactly going on.

My offices were located about 200 yards east of Saint John's Hospital.
Which took a direct hit.
After the tornado passed, I ended up walking to a nursing home facility that had been destroyed.
And I pulled 19 people out of the rubble.
Five of those were, were fatalities.
They were already deceased.

This is where my son, saw a shadow figure On the landing of the staircase.
And you've had some unnerving experiences here I understand.

I was laying down on my bed here and All of a sudden, you know, I wake up in the middle of the night and I look over there's this man, you know? And he has two holes where his eyes should be.
And he was just, like, staring at me intensely for, you know, it had to be a minute or so, and then he just disappeared out of thin air.
Can you show me exactly where the figure that you saw was? Yeah, he was right down there.
How did you feel in that moment? Helpless.
I just know he was Bad.
I just feel agitated in this room.

My daughter, when she's sleeping, she's been awoken by the bed shaking.
She felt like she was attacked.

Later on when we were looking at the pictures, we've noticed Odd things in, in the mirror.
It's different in different pictures.
Sometimes it's just wavy lines.

One of our theories that we apply to mirrors is that, between the glass and the filament, they used to be painted on because that how it was years ago And that's the way that mirror is.

Has there been any increase in activity since the tornado went through? - Yes, actually there has been.

We've captured a lot of activity around this mirror.
Normally, I bring this object to an expert.
But in this case, I think there's more to this haunting.

We also captured what looks like the number 22 in the mirror.
Mirrors have a tendency of holding on to energy throughout the years and can trigger things.
And the number 22 could refer to May 22, the date of the tornado.
When the tornado went through, you were involved with the helping and the assisting.
And a lot of the times energy can attach to you.
Wow.
So, I think that's been causing parts of what is happening, what is occurring in here.
Tell me what you're thinking.

But it kinda makes some sense.
During uh, the moments after the tornado Um, I was helping People out of the, the rubble, and I came across a gentleman who had been impaled.
And I approached him and he was awake.
And begging for help.
I knelt beside him and I put my hands around the wound.
And, John, I lied to him And said, you know, you're doing fine.
We're gonna get you out of here.
And I stayed with him.
Until I saw the Saw the light and the life leave his eyes.
- I'm sorry.
- No, it's all right.
- I just wanted to help him.
- You did.
You were there for him.
He wasn't by himself.
I just felt so helpless.
I mean, what do you do? What do you say? You know? At least he wasn't by himself.
Somebody was there with him.
I didn't want to cry, John.

Collectively as a family With what all of you has endured, what you've witnessed, you guys sit down and talk.
I think a lot of times once that is out in the open, a lot of times that negativity can go away because that's a hell of a thing to harbor.
You gotta let go, and I think that is definitely the beginning stages of the healing process with this.
