Haunted Highway (2012) s01e02 Episode Script

Darkman of Standing Rock; Blackstar Shadow Man

1 What do you know about the Shadowmen? There's this native American Ьassacre.
This is the hub of the Darkman legend.
- Were you scared? - It was terrifying.
It was just enough to make you bolt.
If the Dark Man appears, something bad is about to happen.
I have a bad feeling.
What the [bleep.]
Hello? Oh, my what the hell are you doing?! Devin, the horses! [Bleep.]
No! - What is that? - That's a shadow.
I saw a pair of red eyes.
- Come on! This way! - Go, go, go, go, go! I don't know where this is coming from! Are there any spirits here? I'm Jack Osbourne, and I've been obsessed with the paranormal since I was a kid.
I wanted to investigate some of America's scariest cases, but I decided it had to be done differently.
I put together two teams myself and my researcher, Dana, and my friends Jael and Devin.
We shot everything ourselves just us.
This is what we discovered, and it completely blew my mind.
- Rolling.
- Okay.
Good.
Got it? Yep.
All right.
Here we go.
Welcome to North Dakota.
Radio some tunes? Yes.
What should we listen to? I'll tell you what we should listen to.
What? Not that.
We're getting close to Standing Rock Right.
Which is an American Indian reservation.
The Lakota Sioux tribe.
in order to harm, scare, or even kill the weak.
Right.
The Dark Man is like a grim reaper personifies evil.
Right.
If the Dark Man appears, it's because something bad is about to happen.
They say that this thing is attracted to people who are weak in spirit, kind of have an aura of negativity.
I consider myself a pretty positive person, and same with you, so how are we gonna attract this Dark Man? I've also heard the word "vulnerability" thrown out there.
It's not just weak in spirit.
I mean, we are out in the middle of nowhere by ourselves that in and of itself makes us vulnerable.
There's some civilization.
Oh, yeah.
There it goes.
Goodbye.
Okay.
North Dakota.
North Dakota feel the spirit.
Yeah.
I mean, check this out.
There's nothing here.
Nothing.
Let's get some supplies.
Okay.
Oh, yeah.
Bananas.
Hello.
Is it all right if we use our cameras in here? Do you know what the Dark Man is? We're kind of trying to learn about it, and we're heading out to Standing Rock.
The tall man? What's the tall man? People think it's the devil? Your mom saw the Dark Man? Do you think you could draw it for us? Jael.
Wow.
I see you didn't draw any legs.
Can we ask you some questions on camera? Do you guys know what this image is? Death angel.
You seem like you're kind of hesitant.
Let's check the map really quick, all right? How much farther do we got to go? Banana paperweight.
It's about 30 minutes.
We'll go straight to Standing Rock, see if we can find anybody, talk to them about this Dark Man.
How many insects have you taken out on this road trip? It's only focusing on the dead bugs you've killed.
There's hundreds.
I think I've done good.
Get them good.
I am.
You killed a lot of bugs.
You are rolling.
Here you go.
We have made it to fort yates.
We're gonna go walk around, try and find some locals, see if anyone will talk to us about the Dark Man legend.
We're shooting a documentary on something called the Dark Man or the tall man.
Have you ever heard of it? You've heard about the Dark Man? Do you want to talk to us about him? No.
Has anyone told you a story about when they ran into the Dark Man? I think people are afraid to talk about it.
Why don't you want to say anything about it? What did you think of that? I can tell that people are really reluctant to talk about this thing.
They feel that it's gonna bring them bad luck, just like that guy.
And honestly, that's giving me an uneasy feeling.
It makes me feel like we're walking right into the belly of the beast.
It's hard because we don't really have any strong leads right now.
We need somebody to actually talk to us.
There's a guy right there, on a horse.
Should we pull over? It's worth a shot.
I'll be right back.
All right.
He looks nice.
Devin, we got it.
We got it.
Come on.
We got to go talk to this guy.
Okay.
Okay.
Rolling.
Thanks for talking with us today.
Yeah.
Sure.
What do you know about the Dark Man? As kids, as we grew up, we always used to like to talk about the Dark Man.
There's different stories about how he will get around.
He floats above the ground.
He will move about as fast as a car can move.
What would you recommend we do if we wanted to coax him out, if we wanted to attract the Dark Man? There's a song that they sing to ask for the spirits to be there.
Do you know any part of the song, even if it's just a couple words of the chant? I'm sure the song has something to do with the word "wanagi.
" Wanagi is a spirit, a ghost.
It seemed like a lot of people were hesitant to talk to us today.
A lot of people are scared to talk about this thing because they have had a family member that had witnessed to see this thing and, not too long after that, there was somebody that passed on in that family.
If Devin and I wanted to catch a glimpse of the Dark Man, where should we go to find him? Well, there's a butte that we call the grey ghost butte.
The elders tell me that the Dark Man that's where he resides.
I've got a map.
Could you point it out for us? Sure.
Hold on.
Okay.
We're gonna have to just endure this bumpy ride for a while.
We've got to head that way, up over these hills.
What did you think of delyle? He seemed like a very honest man, and he told us [Bleep.]
Whoa! Sorry.
No, it's good.
We're fine.
He told us that he believes in the Dark Man with 100% conviction.
He's out there.
Is this it? Welcome to grey ghost butte.
So this is where all the sightings are happening.
All right.
Let's get out and get a look at this area.
This seems like we could set up base camp down here at the base of the butte.
This is a weather balloon.
Okay? And here.
This is our flir camera.
We're gonna strap it to the bottom of the weather balloon and inflate it with the helium.
And then we're gonna send it up, and we'll tie it down with paracord, and we'll make sure this thing goes up nice and high and is pointing down and overlooking the entire area.
This is the helium tank.
If there is something out there, I want to catch a good glimpse of it.
All right.
This thing's ready to go.
The flir's hooked on.
We got to get this up before the wind picks up.
I'm gonna try to get it over this prairie, okay? Keeping letting it out and see how high we can get this thing up.
Okay.
I think that's pretty good for now.
Jael, how's it looking? Ooh.
Looks good.
It's kind of shaky right now from the wind.
But I don't think that'll stop us from getting a heat signature.
If something passes by, we'll see it.
Dark Man balloon test.
It's up there.
Yeah.
It's working.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Look, look, look.
What is that? Did you see that? I didn't catch it.
What? [Bleep.]
You saw something? Yes.
Let's go.
Come on.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Look, look, look.
What is that? Did you see that? I didn't catch it.
What? [Bleep.]
You saw something? Yes.
Let's go.
Come on.
Split up a little bit.
You head that way a little bit.
Jael.
Jael.
There's something up there.
What do you see? I'm getting really creeped out.
I swear, like I mean, I couldn't tell if it was, like, from periphery or what.
But I just saw a figure up there.
Okay.
Do you see something over there? Hello? Hello? Whoa.
[Bleep.]
What was that? It was a bird.
Look, let's just cut to the Chase here.
What were the spiritual words that delyle was telling us? Wanagi.
Yeah.
Let's call out "wanagi.
" We need to make ourselves vulnerable no walkies.
Let's see if we can get the good and bad spirits out here.
Okay.
Walkies down.
Giving you the walkie.
Okay.
You know what this is? It's a flare.
Flare.
There you go.
I'm gonna head west, out of walkie range, out of earshot.
If you see something, fire the flare gun straight up.
Okay.
We're gonna chant "Wanagi.
" "Wanagi.
" Let's go.
Out here alone.
Wanagi.
Wanagi.
I don't know.
I have a bad feeling.
I don't know if I'm out here by mysel what is that? I'm gonna turn off the night vision, try to focus in on it.
It's past 4:00 in the morning.
It's raining.
I've been seeing some strange things, but so far no hard evidence.
I have no idea where Jael is.
Hopefully she's coming up with something a little bit better.
[Bleep.]
That's a flare.
I'm coming! Whoa.
- Devin! - I'm coming! I'm coming! Are you okay? Devin.
I'm coming.
I had to shoot the flare.
Oh! Whoa.
You'll never believe this.
Are you okay? I saw a pair of red eyes.
I saw where? There.
That way.
I don't see anything.
Over here.
It was right over here.
It was right over here.
We got to check your camera.
We got to check it.
I got it on camera.
It's gonna be daylight in like 45 minutes.
Let's go.
It's raining.
If you got something on your camera, let's go check it.
I'm not sure what I saw out there last night.
I'm a little bit skeptical.
I only saw them for a split second.
That's why I actually called delyle.
I told him that I want to show him some of the footage that we captured last night, tell him some of the stuff that happened, and I want to hear what he has to say about it.
We're meeting the elder on delyle's property, right? Yeah.
This is a serious driveway.
Hey, delyle.
Good to see you again.
I'm Jael.
Hi, Jael.
This is Devin.
Devin.
You're Virgil.
Yes, I am.
Okay.
Rolling.
I want you to take a look at this video that we have.
You know, it's something that happens really fast, but there are some eyes in the video.
Ooh.
Do these eyes coincide with the description of the Dark Man? It does.
It's something that I've heard.
Two young ladies on a gravel road had a flat tire, and this thing was in the road, and the eyes that we just saw were it's just like they passed through it.
They passed through it, it came through the car, and those girls were screaming.
Okay.
Do you guys know of another place that we can go maybe that people don't ever go to because of the Dark Man? There's another hill right behind me here that's called Crow Feather Hill.
There's different stories that people tell me about this area.
They see different things that are unexplainable would be a good place to possibly locate this thing.
We're looking for something that might attract the Dark Man.
This thing will probably be attracted to a fire.
How can we get there? Crow Feather Hill is located not too far from here.
It'll be a pretty good idea to get there on horseback.
We don't have any horses, though.
Well, I have horses.
Oh.
Come on.
I'm glad that delyle lent us these horses.
Yeah.
This would have been a long, long hike.
What did you think of Virgil's experience of the Dark Man? It sounded like what he saw was very similar to what you saw last night.
That gives me the chills.
Look at this view.
Look at that.
You seeing all that? Crow Feather Hill is that way.
Okay.
I'm pretty sure.
Listen, if the Dark Man is anywhere, he's probably gonna be here, and it's a good chance that we're unwelcome visitors.
Crow feather hill is that way.
Okay.
I'm pretty sure.
Listen, if the Dark Man is anywhere, he's probably gonna be here, and it's a good chance that we're unwelcome visitors.
Do we have enough firewood? Yeah.
We got enough to get it started.
Okay.
Let's get some fire going.
Dark Man fire test has begun.
All right.
So we've got our fire going.
Our I.
R.
cameras are set up.
We've got an infrared camera at the top of Crow Feather Hill.
We've got two other cameras down at the base of the hill, pointing east and west.
We've got another one pointing down at the riverbed.
Copy.
This is a good spot to just kind of watch.
What's going on? The horses are getting spooked.
Hold on.
Go check on them, Devin.
Whoa.
It's okay.
It's all right.
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
Easy, easy, easy.
Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh.
Everything okay over there? No, they're something's got them spooked.
Fire's still going.
Whoa.
Holy crap.
I.
R.
fell over.
What the [bleep.]
Wait, Devin! Devin, the horses! [Bleep.]
[Bleep.]
No! Wait! I thought you tied them up.
I did tie them up.
[Bleep.]
Devin.
I'm gonna go check on that camera.
It's knocked over? Yes, it was knocked over.
Those horses were our ticket out of here.
Maybe we'll see them once daybreak hits.
But it took almost a whole day to get out here.
I know how long it took us to get out here.
We might need to hike out of here, okay? I'm gonna go down and get the flir camera.
See if I can capture any heat signatures.
Stay here.
Whatever knocked that over if it was an animal, where's the flir camera? Devin.
Hey.
Did you get the flir? Yeah.
Sorry I got mad at you.
I was just bummed about the horses.
I was mad.
Let's get a good sweep of the area down there.
Do you think it could have been a cow? Yeah.
Theoretically, it could have been a cow.
I feel like if it was a cow they move kind of slow.
I feel like we would have found it up here.
All right.
Let's scan this area.
Maybe we'll be able to see the horses in the distance or something.
Devin.
Look.
What? Look.
Our fire's out.
That's impossible.
You think the wind blew it out? I don't think so.
It was, like, a roaring flame.
I want to go see what happened.
I want to go see what's wrong with that fire.
What the hell is going on? We would have had to pour water on this to put it out.
This whole area is dry.
Are you sure the fire wasn't just going out and you happened to look at it when it finally extinguished? I'm telling you, I was watching.
It was right behind you.
And then, all of a sudden, it was as if, like "swoop," like it got sucked away or something.
I don't know.
I don't know.
It was just gone all of sudden, like that.
This doesn't make any sense.
I don't know what's going on right now, but we're gonna do an EVP session.
And if this Dark Man is anything paranormal, maybe it'll come out on this.
Okay.
3:35 in the morning, Crow Feather Hill, EVP session, Dark Man case.
If there are any spirits out there and you had anything to do with the events that happened tonight, give us a sign.
Do you come to cause harm? Dark Man evidence review.
Do you come to cause harm? I can't make out anything at all.
Nothing? No.
I went looking through all those audio files, and I couldn't make out a response either.
Quite a night, huh? Yeah.
A four-hour hike to get back, but at least the horses were able to make it to town safely.
Oh, yeah.
Next time I'm tying them up.
All right.
Let's take a look at this thermal footage by the fire from last night and see if there's anything going on.
There's the fire.
Wait, wait.
Go back a few frames.
I thought I saw something.
Go slow.
Right there.
Whoa.
Do you see that? Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
What is that? Look at that, right next to the fire.
Kind of looks humanoid, doesn't it? Yeah.
It's only there for like three frames, though.
There was nobody else there but us.
Do you think that has anything to do with the fire going out? I don't know.
I mean, it's so crazy how the fire just went out the way it did.
It doesn't make sense at all.
It wasn't even that Windy.
But flir footage can be very difficult to analyze, especially at that distance.
Right.
It morphs.
We were all the way up that hill.
There was something there, though, and I think that's what we can both agree on.
What do you think of our investigation? I don't know what those eyes were that we got on the video, but Virgil and delyle both recognized them.
Right.
They both seemed to think that they were the Dark Man's eyes.
It could very well have been some sort of animal.
And just for some reason, that split moment, the eyes reflected back red.
But normally the eyes reflect back in the same color if it's a white light, they reflect back white.
If it's I.
R.
, then they reflect back green.
Yeah.
These looked like they were giving off their own light, like they were glowing.
Based on what we experienced out there, there might be something paranormal going on.
The Dark Man might seem like a legend, but to the people out here, he's real.
In my opinion, way too much happened for it to be just coincidence.
I just can't explain it all the way.
For me, the Dark Man might just be real.
All right.
Cool.
We are rolling.
We're going to Blackstar Canyon, and this place is known for having these Shadowmen.
There's been an increasing amount of reports of the same thing.
And that's large, hooded figures, strange lights, and people are hearing voices and hearing things walk around.
The thing that's interesting about this is that you can only see these shadows our of your peripheral vision.
Yeah.
So whenever anybody tries to turn and catch them, can't see them.
We're getting into whoo.
Getting into real rough roads here, so that must mean that we're on the right path or lack thereof.
I know, right? While we were in town, we spoke to a few locals, and someone put us in touch with a guy by the name of Mike Vasquez.
He claims to have had a couple run-ins with these shadow people, so I'm interested to see what he has to say.
Agreed, agreed, and agreed.
That must be Mike.
Yeah.
That looks like Mike.
We're going to Blackstar Canyon, and this place is known for having these Shadowmen.
While we were in town, we spoke to a few locals, and someone put us in touch with a guy by the name of Mike Vasquez.
That must be Mike.
Yeah.
That looks like Mike.
Mike, thank you for meeting with us.
We heard about your story, so we definitely wanted to hear from you what happened that night.
My buddies and I were hiking towards the back of the canyon, and we start hearing pacing back and forth, but you couldn't see what it was.
Did you guys feel like you were being watched? Definitely was an eerie feeling.
More like stalked.
And as you turned, you kind of see, out of the peripherals, a shadowy figure.
But as you turn to go find it, there's nothing there.
Interesting.
How big was this shadowy figure? It was tall probably about 6 foot tall, humanlike shape.
It was just like a black shadow.
So this definitely wasn't a mountain lion.
Definitely wasn't a mountain lion no mountain lion I've seen before.
Were you scared? It was terrifying.
You feel the hair standing up on the back of your neck.
It was just enough to make you bolt.
What do you say to people who don't believe your story? I mean, we are in the middle of nowhere.
There's a lot of animals here.
I know what I saw, and I believe what I saw is something paranormal.
We're at Silverado cafe, just outside of Blackstar Canyon, about to meet with a guy by the name of Joel Robinson, who is a local historian and naturalist.
I'm looking forward to picking his brain and seeing where it leads.
Let's do it.
Is it cool if we shoot here? Okay.
What do you know about the Shadowmen? There are definitely some stories that have been documented in local history books.
There's this native American massacre that happened back in the 1830s at this village site called hidden ranch.
The ghosts of those people, whether they were massacred or not, could be there to this day.
It sounds like there's a correlation between shadow people and these massacred Indians.
If my people had been killed off by some trappers a long time ago, I'd probably want to get my revenge, you know? Yeah.
If we were to go anywhere, you would say to go to hidden ranch.
Yeah.
It's one of the best-preserved archaeological sites we have.
So if I was a ghost, I'd want to preserve that site, too.
What do you think the best way for us would be if we're trying to find these Shadowmen? Well, there's this rumor where if you sit at a base of an oak tree with a blindfold in the dark and you wait, then the Shadowman might come.
That was really interesting talking to Joel.
Yeah.
He was a little more than informative.
By the way, are you up for trying a little blindfolding? If the rumors are true and people claim that they've got results from it, we're not really in a position to turn down these potential experiments.
I'm hoping that we come up with some really tangible evidence now.
I'm excited for tonight.
We've just entered Blackstar Canyon.
Aren't these yucca plants? Is that what that is? I believe so.
Oh.
Ow.
Ooh, watch out.
Those are called, um, prickly bastards.
The creek.
Hey, be careful, 'cause these are really slippery.
We're losing light pretty fast.
Quickest way would be to go over this hill, according to the GPS.
Let me show you what I'm talking about.
We're here.
We can either follow this river all the way around, or we can go over this hill right here.
We're gonna try and figure out how to get over this hump.
Come on.
One, two Whoa.
According to the GPS, this is the spot.
This has to be hidden ranch.
Let's set up the gear so we can get the investigation rolling.
Shadowmen night investigation.
What are you doing? I am building a 360 rig.
I threw this together from a few scraps of wood I found and the gopros that we had.
And what is this for? I kind of thought this would be a bit of a techie solution if any Shadowmen do come around, we don't have to turn our heads to see.
There is no peripheral vision with this thing.
There is no exactly.
Okay.
All right.
I see where you're going.
This totally eliminates peripheral vision.
Boom that's how we do it.
And I'm gonna take the emf meter.
If this spikes, it could indicate paranormal activity.
I've set up these motion sensors all around the perimeter.
If we hear this alarm we'll know something has triggered the sensors.
What was that? What? Hello? Jack? Hello? Hello? Jack? Jack? Oh, my what the What was that? Hello? Jack? Oh, my - What the - Dana.
What the hell are you doing?! I came out here to set up the 360 cams.
What is wrong with you? I keep seeing stuff out of the corner of my eye.
We need to do what Joel was talking about with the blindfolding and sitting by a tree.
This is the best chance in getting this on camera.
Okay, Dana.
We've got the night-vision cam set up.
Got it.
We have an I.
R.
camera pointed at you that I can see from base camp.
We've got the 360-degree cams all set up.
They have night vision on them.
So no matter what comes through here, we're gonna be able to see.
Here's a walkie-talkie.
If you get freaked out anything at all just scream, and I'll be here in a second.
Here's the EVP recorder.
While you're sat here blindfolded, I want you to ask as many questions as you can.
Questions.
And we'll see what we can pick up.
Got it.
Finally The blindfold.
Okay.
All right, Dana.
You're coming in clear.
Okay.
I'm gonna start the EVP session now.
Copy that.
Are there any spirits here? Do you wish us harm? Nothing so far.
Were you involved with the massacre? I don't know how I feel about being Shadowman bait right now.
Starting to think this is not a good idea.
Oh, my God! Something touched me! What's wrong? Did you see that? Oh, my God.
Something touched me.
Nothing is coming up on the camera.
You have not been touched by anything that I can see.
Bring the thermal so I can see if this is an animal.
I'm coming.
I'm coming.
What the [bleep.]
Are you serious right now? A branch just fell out of a tree and nearly landed on me.
There is no wind nothing.
That scared the [bleep.]
out of me.
Jack, where are you? I'm right here.
Oh, I am really freaked out right now.
What is it? I just feel like something's constantly watching me.
Everything you're describing seems like what Mike, our witness, was describing.
I know Mike mentioned a chill and then feeling like something was watching you.
And I felt all of that, 100%.
Were you hearing anything? No.
Okay.
Whatever is here or was here cannot be far.
I think we need to kind of have a bit of a stiff upper lip right now and go look around.
Come on.
Okay.
We need to keep an eye out for any signs of the Shadowmen.
Look for signs of movement in your peripheral vision or any shadowy figures.
Anyone out here? Hello? Maybe it was our lights.
I don't know.
I mean, I'm literally seeing it seems like someone is just walking up right behind me.
Well, that's exactly what people say about the Shadowmen.
Man, I don't like this at all.
You see that? I did just see do you see something? I just did see something.
Okay.
I heard that.
Are you serious? Okay.
Motion detector.
Let's get back to base.
Come on.
Go, go, go, go, go! Come on! This way! This way.
See anything? No, I don't.
I don't know what's going on right now.
I really don't.
I wonder if the I.
R.
cameras picked it up.
You think? Maybe.
Let's go back and check.
Come on.
Ok I heard that.
Are you serious? Okay.
Motion detector.
Let's get back to base.
Come on.
This way.
I wonder if the I.
R.
cameras picked it up.
You think? Maybe.
Let's go back and check.
Come on.
It's been a pretty tough night.
It's the morning now.
Dana and I were kind of up all night.
I mean, every five minutes, we would hear something walking around.
We're gonna look back and see what we came up with in the footage and see if we captured anything.
Ooh.
Ooh.
Wait, wait, wait.
Stop, stop.
No.
What was that? What was that? Wow.
It's a bobcat.
This is the same time as the motion sensors went off, so that bobcat must have triggered them.
Okay.
Listen to this.
Were you involved with the massacre? It's weird, huh? And you didn't hear the clanking when you were there? No.
I mean, could this be some sort of interference? Interference doesn't usually come in like that.
I mean, it sounds like "clunk, clunk, clunk.
" What I want to know is if you've loaded all the footage from my blindfold test.
I have, and I've strung it all together.
Have you watched this yet? I haven't watched it all strung together yet.
What? What is that? What the hell was that? Rewind.
Your rig definitely caught something.
What? What is that? Hang on.
Do it frame by frame.
Look at that thing.
No way.
That is right before I jumped up.
That is.
And that's right when I felt something touch my shoulder.
Something ran through every single camera.
That's a shadow in the shape of a human.
Proof I am not a psycho crazy person.
Okay.
But it's not proof that there's a shadow person.
It just proves that there's a shadow.
You didn't see it.
We're in a wooded area, there's all sort of creatures, there's wind I mean, that could have been a branch falling, touching you.
It could have been so many things.
I guess.
I'm not gonna totally count the close encounter as kind of rock-hard evidence.
I think everything out there was an animal.
I'm not convinced at all.
I think this is just coincidence.
I think it's plausible.
Being out there at night blindfolded definitely can mess with your head.
So Okay.
