Jane by Design (2011) s01e08 Episode Script

The Wedding Dress

That's me.
Jane Quimby.
My life is a little complicated right now.
I landed my fashion dream job working for her, Gray Chandler Murray.
The only problem, they think I'm an adult.
Now I am juggling two secret lives, one in high school and one in high fashion.
Previously on Jane By Design It's all good.
I've got this, Cam.
How'd this dirtbag get in the party anyhow? You're right, bro.
Look, he doesn't want any trouble, okay? He's just He's just trash.
You can dress up all you want, but you're still trash, too.
Even if you'd been kidnapped by a family of senators, you'd still want to be a baseball player.
What? Nothing.
It's just I'm enjoying this.
Getting to know you better.
Me, too.
And that's why my new accessories line for spring is the next big thing.
And that thing is neon.
Neo-African neon.
(SNICKERS) Do you have something to add, Jane? Maybe young people are interested in what's new, but they want to define themselves.
Interesting point, Jane.
It is? The problem with taking on someone like India is that you're taking on someone like India.
You put yourself in the tiger's cage, expect to get bitten.
JANE: Every pattern begins with one thin line, then comes to life with each stroke, becoming more and more complex as the design takes shape.
There's a rough road.
That is less chosen.
Because it requires some yielding.
JANE: Life is sort of like a dress pattern.
It can start simply, but suddenly become hopelessly complicated.
Oh! I'm late.
'Cause life It runs out too soon And all that I wanna do Give the world a love that is true Are you sure you want to do this? I do.
I've my heart where my head should be Light up the rest of me 'Cause your dreams, they won't fall apart Through the stops, the starts And your life is a work of art Jane By Design 1x08 - The Wedding Dress Original air date February 21, 2012 So, we've got Wrightsville this weekend.
I was talking with them last week and they said they're gonna beat us.
You know what, that was last season.
So, let's get pumped 'cause we're gonna crush them! (ALL CHEERING) Jane, seriously, why are we even here? I thought we hated pep rallies.
Historically, yes.
But we're playing Wrightsville, and they're our archrivals.
I didn't realize we had archrivals.
Of course we do.
(WHOOPING) And we lost to them last year, so this is a really important rematch.
Or is it a replay? A reboot? What? There was a whole editorial about it in the school paper.
(ALL CHEERING) Too cool for the wave now? On the contrary.
Not cool enough.
Yes! See, that wasn't so bad, was it? Ooh.
(CHUCKLES) Jane! - Hey.
- Hi.
So, are you pumped? Are you ready to crush Ooh! Sorry.
I was kidding.
I know.
(GIGGLES) Right, you know, I think I'm gonna get out of here.
Oh, wait.
No, no, no, no! Stay.
Right? Right.
Right! Look, man, I'm sorry about the other night at my party.
Cam, guy's a jerk.
Yeah, it's fine.
- If I had known that was going on - No worries.
- I wouldn't have let it get so out of control.
- It's fine.
Okay.
Well, this is good.
We've now cleared the air.
And so we are all good, right? Yeah.
Sure.
Okay.
So, we're still on for tonight.
The three of us at The Rack.
Just some pool.
Some food.
Super simple stuff.
- Actually, tonight I'm - I can't tonight, I Okay, look, we are doing this.
You are my best friend, and you are well, I guess we're still figuring that out.
Yeah, we are.
All right, I'll see you guys tonight.
- At 8:00, okay? - All right.
What? Why are you making me do this? Because things have been tense between you guys ever since Nick's party.
Yeah, that's because you were right.
We're not like those people, Janey.
We never were.
And trying to fit in, it's it's just not worth it.
Trust me.
Nick is different, Billy.
And I like him.
Please give him a chance.
I never asked you to hang out with Lulu.
Exactly.
You never asked.
(SCOFFS) What? So, if I would've asked Well, I guess we'll never know, will we? Have you talked to her at all? Nope.
(SIGHS) Just say you'll go tonight, okay? For me? Fine.
You never know.
I mean, maybe you guys will have so much in common.
Yeah, I hate to break it to you, Janey, but Fadden and I, zero in common, all right? Other than you.
Don't you have a train to catch? Yes, let's go.
That's my favorite one of them.
Your mom was really pretty.
Yeah.
I'm sure she still is.
(SIGHING) Wherever she is.
I've got to get to work.
- Boom! - Thank you.
I will see you tonight, okay? Jane Billy, you promised.
I'll be there for you.
I'll see you at 8:00.
Hey, what's going on? Shh.
Oh, my God.
Is that Charlotte Whitmore.
What? Are you telling me Donovan designed her wedding dress.
Just arrived from Paris.
CARTER: You're kidding.
I mean, she is practically American royalty? There's no such thing.
Close enough.
You realize she's marrying - The crown prince of Denmark.
- Yeah, we know.
We also read from time to time.
So, Donovan scored the gown of the year, but I'm confused.
Since when do we design wedding dresses? - We don't.
- Until now.
It was a major coup, very top secret.
Donovan dazzled the bride.
And now every who's who and Page Six in the city Um, in the country.
will be talking about Donovan Decker designing the Whitmore wedding gown.
And you two aren't excited because Because this Is the moment of truth.
(EXHALES) I don't know.
You don't know.
Oh, all right.
What don't you like? I said I don't know.
I'm just not sure this is it.
Charlotte, if I may, I think you look stunning in this dress.
Yes, but is it the one? I believe it is.
(ALL MURMURING APPROVAL) What do you think? I think it's perfect.
And you? Oh, love it.
Perfection.
(DOOR OPENING) What's going on? You.
What's your name? Um, Jane.
It's Jane.
Do you like my wedding dress, Jane? I, um Jane, this is Miss Whitmore.
Oh.
Hi.
Miss Charlotte Whitmore.
Great.
Okay.
Well, now that we've got all that straightened out, back to my question.
Do you like my wedding dress, Jane? I love it.
(ALL CHUCKLING NERVOUSLY) What don't you like about it? Oh, I didn't say that I didn't like it.
I said I love it, which is - But you hesitated.
- No, I didn't.
Yes, you did.
(STAMMERING) I think she was just pausing in admiration.
Jane, this is my wedding dress.
This is the most important dress I will ever put on.
Do you understand? All eyes will be on me, and this dress this dress needs to be perfect.
It needs to be the one.
So, please.
Tell me the truth.
What do you think of this dress? Go on, Jane.
Tell her the truth.
Yes, Jane.
Tell Miss Whitmore what you think of the dress.
You want me to Yes, go on.
Tell her.
Okay.
Well, I think it's a little fussy.
Exactly.
Fussy.
I think what Jane meant was She meant what she said, Mr.
Jones.
Now, my wedding is in exactly three weeks.
I'm giving Donovan Decker until noon tomorrow to come up with a new dress.
No, with the perfect new dress! Or I'm moving on with another designer.
I'm sorry.
We have an extremely high-profile client with a non-negotiable deadline.
Donovan worked on that wedding dress for months, Jane.
And now I know.
I didn't realize who she was at first, and Charlotte Whitmore is the sort of person who can put a designer's name on the map.
Who can take us to the next level.
I'm really sorry.
It's a little late for sorry, Jane.
In Jane's defense, we did tell her to be honest with Charlotte.
You're never honest with the client.
- You're not? - Never.
Okay.
What are you supposed to tell them? What they want to hear.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
Got it.
Charlotte's given us until noon tomorrow before she goes to another designer.
Donovan is on a plane for the next six hours.
There's no time.
I have an idea.
Maybe Jeremy could work on it and or not.
Or not.
Not.
She's right.
You'll have to do it, Jeremy.
You have to redesign the gown.
Me? But I don't do wedding dresses.
Now you do.
If we do not pull this off, we're gonna look like idiots.
Do you understand? That dress needs to be perfect.
I'll call you back in a few hours.
- Betsey! - Gray! So, tell me everything.
How's the Whitmore wedding dress coming along? - Honestly? - Yes.
Well, it's a show-stopper.
Oh, boy! Goody, goody! Um well, look at it this way.
I mean, if anyone can do it, you can.
Jane, this is serious.
No, I know.
And it's not your fault.
It's mine.
If I can't turn this wedding gown around, your little outburst may very well have cost me my job.
I'm really sorry.
It's okay.
Just get ready for a long night.
(ROCK MUSIC PLAYING) - What's up, Nick? - Hey, Billy.
Where's Jane? Oh, she'll be here.
She usually runs about 15 minutes late or so.
You're 15 minutes late.
Yeah.
Sorry about that.
You know, I had to have Ben drop me off.
We don't all have cars.
I didn't mean it that way.
Oh, it's cool.
So.
So.
You been here long? - About 15 minutes.
- Right.
You know, that doesn't surprise me.
- What? - Nothing.
No.
What doesn't surprise you? Oh, you just have a very punctual vibe.
I have a punctual vibe? Yeah.
You seem like the kind of guy who would never be late for anything.
Is that a bad thing? No, no! Not at all.
It's who you are.
I mean, personally, I like to keep 'em guessing.
- Keep who guessing? - Exactly.
So did you get here early just so you could warm up on the pool table? I didn't get here early.
I was on time.
Okay.
Fair enough.
You any good? - At pool? - Yeah.
Let's just say pool is not my best sport.
- It's a game.
- What? Pool.
You just called it a sport.
I think it's considered a sport.
No way, dude.
It's a game.
Okay, fine.
Whatever.
Let's just wait for Jane.
I need ideas and I need them fast.
What about you? What've you got? No.
You? That's terrible.
You.
Really? I'm going under here, people.
Haven't any of you got anything? I've got until tomorrow to pull this out of a tailspin and if I can't Wait.
Do you hear that? That ticking noise? That's not a clock.
That's a time bomb! I meant my career.
You know what? It's late.
We're all out of ideas.
We're tired.
You should just go.
Go home.
All of you.
I'll just sit here, alone, failing.
Wow.
You really know how to empty a place.
Well, you're still here.
We're not gonna leave you.
Especially not in your time of incredibly self-composed need.
What am I gonna do? It's gonna be fine.
- We'll help.
- You will? Of course we will.
Thank you.
BILLY: Thanks.
Dude, feel free to dig in.
No, thanks.
I'm good.
What, you don't like nachos? I love nachos.
I just think we should wait for Jane.
It's polite.
That's another vibe you have.
What? The polite vibe? Yep.
And I mean no offense.
Can you check on Jane? I told you.
She'll be here.
Mmm, there she is now.
What'd she say? Remember when I said, "She'll be here"? She's not coming.
- She said to say she's sorry.
- Right.
- It's her - Internship.
Apparently the most demanding internship in the world.
Does your girlfriend do this to you? Make you wait and not show up places? I don't like to discuss my personal life.
No offense.
Right.
You like to keep 'em guessing.
Exactly.
Wait.
Time out.
Did you just refer to Jane as your girlfriend? No, I didn't.
It kind of sounded like you did.
Well, I mean, we've kind of been getting pretty close in the last You know, actually, scratch that.
I really don't like to talk about other people's personal lives either.
All right.
This has been great and a lot of fun.
But I think I'm gonna head out, Billy.
Look, you know Jane organized tonight so that we could get to know each other better.
Seemed important to her.
That's certainly going well.
You know I like nachos.
Everybody likes nachos.
You know I'm better than you at pool.
I never said you were better than me.
I said it wasn't my best sport.
It's a game.
And that sounds like a challenge.
Grab a stick, Fadden.
Okay.
How's it going? Honestly, I've been sketching for hours.
I've tried everything, beaded fishtails, Victorian ball gowns, Grecian columns You'll come up with something.
And what if I don't? Hmm? If I blow this.
If I publicly humiliate Donovan Decker.
You and I both know I'll be out of here faster than Diaz, and those two worked together for years.
Everything I've worked for my entire life, gone.
Just like that.
Maybe I could help you.
Help me design the wedding gown.
It's a little bit out of your area of expertise.
(SIGHS) All right.
I'll admit it.
You're better than me at pool.
Oh, I know that was difficult for you.
Still better than you at baseball, though.
Uh, not necessarily.
You're not serious.
I've never played.
Therefore it's impossible to know my true potential.
I could have Hall of Fame talent.
You know, that's what Lulu used to tell me.
So, what happened? Aimless youth.
No, no, no.
What happened with you and Lulu? I mean, you were all in-crowd for a minute, then a total 180 the next.
What gives? Just wasn't for me.
And Lulu? I guess I just wasn't for her.
Did she tell you that? She didn't have to.
Well, I mean, unless you talk to her, you'll never really know for sure.
You know, we really don't have to do this whole girl talk thing.
Got it.
Rack 'em.
Nice shot.
So, what do you say we make it a little more interesting this time? You just want to take my money.
No.
Not at all.
I really think you're starting to get the hang of it.
If you say so.
Can I get you guys a drink? I'm good.
(MOUTHING) Yeah.
I'll take a beer.
- Can I see your ID? - Absolutely.
There you go.
Thank you, Roger.
- Thank you.
- Thank you.
Roger Stevens.
Oh, yeah.
Some of my best work.
(CLEARS THROAT) Special delivery.
What're you talking about? These just arrived for you from someone named Richard.
Who is he? None of your business.
Well, whoever he is, he has great taste.
In flowers, that is.
(CHUCKLES) Funny.
You can leave now.
Ouch.
You're still here.
It's just a shame to see such beautiful flowers go to waste.
I'm not interested in Richard.
Or his flowers.
Is that a problem? Not my business.
True.
Oh, and Carter, can you not mention this to anyone? Don't look at me like that.
I'm sort of seeing someone else right now, and I wouldn't want them to get the wrong idea, so It's no one you know, it's - Jeremy.
- No.
- India.
- What? Everyone knows.
I don't know what you're talking about.
Fine.
Have it your way.
Hey, Jane, could you help me find that bolt of silk chiffon Jeremy was asking for? Oh, yeah.
Sure thing.
Yes! It's perfect.
Where'd you get this? I it's Is this yours? Well, actually, it's Brilliant.
Perfect, simple.
I love it, India.
You do? I really do.
Are you sure you're okay with me using this? Your design? Of course I am.
I wanted to help.
I can't believe you did this for me.
I'm touched.
Really, I am.
I didn't realize you had this in you.
This is a beautiful dress.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
Rack 'em.
You hustled me.
I can't believe I just fell for that.
Hey, look, if it makes you feel any better, you're not that bad.
It doesn't make me feel any better at all, all right? You lied.
So much for that whole honest vibe.
Whoa, I never lied.
Hey, you lied, all right.
You said you weren't good at pool.
No, I said it wasn't my best sport.
It's a game, first off.
And you still lied.
No, I didn't.
I'm really, really good at baseball.
Oh, I get it, man.
You're good at everything.
What's that supposed to mean? Nothing.
It was a compliment.
Didn't sound like a compliment.
Hey, I'd like to be good at everything.
To be rich.
To always win.
I'd like to have everything handed to me.
I didn't have anything handed to me.
Really? What'd you drive here? How much you pay for that? - Exactly.
- Billy.
You don't know anything about me.
Great.
It's Adam.
BILLY: Who's Adam? They're from Wrightsville.
The team we're playing tomorrow.
Which one of them's Adam? Both of them.
Look who it is, Adam.
Nick Fadden.
How's it going, Adam? Adam.
Wait.
So, you guys are both named Adam? What's your point? Oh, no point.
It's just a little confusing, you know.
For you, maybe.
Nice.
So you're pitching tomorrow? Yeah.
I'll be on the mound.
Good.
I'm looking forward to a little batting practice.
If you can remember, I like my pitches inside.
About belt high.
Yeah, we're in the middle of a game here.
So, I'll just see you guys tomorrow, all right? Well, I've got an idea.
Why don't we all play? You and hair gel here against me and Adam.
Hair gel? Ouch.
What do you say? We could make it Interesting? It's not really my best sport.
It's a game.
All right.
Now that I've finally found a design that I'm happy with, thanks to India, it's time to buckle down, all right? I'm going to need ivory silk charmeuse for the bodice, pearls for the sleeves, the absolute smallest covered buttons you can find to cover the zipper, and a French silk tulle, in ecru.
I repeat, ecru, not cream.
He's back.
Got it? Good.
All right, people, stand back! Doctor Jones is about to make the first cut.
Oh! That's game.
Now, I would say rack 'em, but I think you guys are all out of money.
There's an ATM outside, though, if you want to keep going.
You think you're funny? Generally? Yes.
Hey, good game, guys.
You hustled us.
No, we didn't.
Hey, Adam, relax! We want our money back.
No way.
Look, guys.
We won fair and square.
Nobody made you put the money down.
You're gonna give us that money back.
Really? I am? Yeah, you are.
Actually, I think I'm gonna keep it and split it with my friend here.
Friend? Now's really not a good time.
Give me the money.
Right now.
Or what? (GRUNTS) Dude, are you okay? That kind of hurt.
(GROANS) Seriously, dude! (GROANING) Hit them.
Not me.
Okay.
Hey, we can take these guys.
Okay.
Let's do it.
- Great.
- What? It's Adam.
Are you kidding me? Another oooo What should we do? Hey, Jeremy.
I think I found the Magnificent, isn't it? What do you think? Where did you get this? I told you.
From India.
Quite frankly, I'm surprised.
I don't think she's realized her true calling in accessories design.
Wouldn't you say? Charlotte Whitmore isn't gonna know what hit her when she sees this one.
All that's left is to be hemmed, sewn, and embellished, and Are you all right? No.
I'm not.
That design, it's it's mine.
This is yours? Yes.
It's mine.
India took it.
India? Honestly, Jane.
This is a serious thing.
If you accuse someone Accuse someone of what? Nothing.
No one is You! I'm accusing you.
Me? Yeah, you took my sketch.
I did no such thing.
(SCOFFS) You know what? Maybe you're confused.
Maybe this is just a misunderstanding? Perhaps you sketched something similar to this - Look, I'm not confused.
- Oh, I think you are.
India, stop.
She's accusing me and you defend her? I'm not defending anyone, I just - You don't believe me? - You don't believe me? Yes.
No.
I I don't know who to believe.
Well, I'm telling the truth.
Prove it.
Go on, Jane.
Prove I took your sketch.
I I can't.
You know, when you cheat, India, you only cheat yourself.
What're you, 12? No, I'm I'm not letting you get away with this.
That sketch is mine.
And I - Jane - No, it's mine.
- No, it's - It's mine! Both of you, stop it this instant! - What's your problem? - What's your problem? What've you got? Love it.
That settles it.
This is the dress we're making tonight.
Whomever it belongs to.
The Adams are still out there.
Man, that guy was huge.
I can't believe we're hiding.
Yeah, I can't believe you elbowed me in the eye.
I'm sorry.
I was winding up for a punch.
Winding up? Yeah.
It was going to be a good one, too.
Who winds up for a punch? Okay, small confession.
I've never actually been in a fight before.
Yeah.
I got that.
Hey, you know, at least you're not good at everything.
So why was this so important to Jane? You and me hanging out tonight? I don't know.
I think she wants us to be friends or something.
I'll think about it.
Dude, I was not extending an offer there.
But we do have more in common than I initially thought.
Yeah? Like what? We're both really good at pool.
You're not that good.
Nachos? That works.
All right.
Then there's the obvious one.
Jane.
I don't know why you're so worked up.
I'm not worked up.
Not at all.
(LAUGHS) I mean, you know, the whole creative integrity thing is way overrated if you ask me.
I don't have time for this, Jane.
In the end, it doesn't matter who gets the credit.
It's Donovan's name up there.
You're right.
I'm fine.
This hem needs to be basted.
I'm on it.
We need a fit model.
This form's all wrong.
The hem's sagging, the bodice is drooping.
This is all we have right now.
I could call someone We don't have time to call in a fit model.
We just need someone yay high.
Seriously? It's gorgeous.
This is my design.
And I can prove it.
I see it.
Right here.
It's clearly yours.
The ruching.
The detail.
I didn't even know it was my inspiration at first.
Not until I was wearing it.
It was like she was staring back at me in the mirror.
I'm so sorry I doubted you, Jane.
It's okay.
No.
It's not.
I should have known.
How could you? Honestly, it's okay.
I'm just sorry I got so angry.
You had every right to be angry about it.
I can't believe India would do this.
Why would she do this? Why does India do anything? You know, you look just like her.
Yeah.
Where is she now? I have no idea.
Oh, I'm sorry, Jane.
No.
I'm sorry I didn't believe you.
It's settled.
We're telling Gray.
- Don't.
- Jane, this is serious.
The only thing that matters to me is that you know.
That you know it was mine.
Now, let's finish it.
Here we go, slow Back to the bottle 'Cause what we don't know No, it won't cause a problem, no And it's in the stars, they say So I keep my eyes on the ground Down, down Down, down, down All the world could be Falling and crumbling down It's all right with me If it comes, let it fall 'Cause I've got everything I want I've got There's no time for concern There's no time Are you sure you want to do this? I do.
(SIGHS) - Cheers.
- Cheers.
- Good work.
- Thank you.
You, too.
Oh.
Oh.
Thank you.
I knew it from the start You ran off with my heart And with your first hello I was forever yours You should tell her, you know.
Who? Gray.
You should tell her what India did and that she tried to take the credit.
I could.
You're right.
But bringing somebody down just to get ahead, that's just not me.
That's really, uh Naive.
(CHUCKLES) I know.
No.
Actually, I was gonna say that's really admirable.
Which is not a word we use a lot in this business.
Thank you, Carter.
Are you gonna tell me why you did it? Why does it matter? It matters to me.
She's just some ridiculous assistant that you and Gray seem to heap your attention on day after day.
Yet you took her design.
- For you.
- For me? I mean, Donovan Decker.
All I wanted was for you, us, this company to succeed.
You seemed so happy when you saw the design, and I just thought You thought what? I thought it didn't matter where it came from.
- Is that right? - It is.
India.
You and I it's over.
Give me a real solution Give me a resolution Give me a reason not to look away Richard, hi.
It's India.
Yeah.
Yes, I got the flowers, and they're beautiful.
About your invitation tonight, um, I'd love to have dinner with you.
All right.
I'll see you then.
What I mean to you Give me a real solution Give me a resolution Where do you think you're going? Home.
Same as you.
Not quite.
You have to wait with him for Charlotte Whitmore.
She'll be here in an hour.
Why do I have to stay? You wanted the credit, Jane.
You got it.
Are you really just gonna leave Jeremy here all alone to face the music? What if she doesn't like it? You mind parking it for me? My pleasure.
Yo, Nick! Yeah? Say hi to the Adams for me, huh? I'll do that.
(CHUCKLES) Come on, come on, come on.
(SIGHS) (SIGHS) (DOOR OPENS) Charlotte! You're here.
You have exactly 10 minutes.
I have an appointment with Vera Wang at 12:30 sharp.
Vera Wang? Well, I don't have a lot of confidence in Donovan Decker right now.
Right this way.
Before I look, I'd like to know what you think of the dress, Jane.
I think you need to see it.
It's beautiful, isn't it? Oh, no.
No, no, no (SIGHS) This can't be happening.
Please don't say you hate it.
You have no idea how much work went into this, and I I love it.
You love it? She loves it.
It's exactly what I wanted.
It's elegant.
It's simple.
And not fussy.
(LAUGHS) Definitely not fussy.
(SIGHS) It's classic.
I thought so, too.
It's the one.
Outside the window the sun is shining all the time Ooh, ooh, I'm so sweet on you You, ooh, ooh ooh, ooh One, two, three You are all I need You're sweet as sugar Four, five, six You gotta give me a kiss You're sweet as sugar NICK: - Hey.
- Hi.
- You made it.
