Jane by Design (2011) s01e09 Episode Script

The Getaway

That's me.
Jane Quimby.
My life is a little complicated right now.
I landed my fashion dream job working for her, Gray Chandler Murray.
The only problem? They think I'm an adult.
Now I'm juggling two secret lives, one in high school and one in high fashion.
Previously, on Jane By Design Yes, it's it's perfect.
- It's - I love it, India.
You do? - That sketch is mine, and I no! - Jane! - It's mine! - No, it's mine! Both of you stop it this instant! It feels kinda weird to go to a party without her.
You'd rather not go to a party with me, than go to one without Jane? You can dress up all you want, but you're still trash, too.
Just get out.
Lu.
Right.
(Banging on door) You're coming with me.
Now.
This is my design.
I'm so sorry I doubted you, Jane.
- It's okay.
- Still can't believe India did this.
India, you and I, it's over.
Jane: We all have baggage, the stuff we always carry with us.
But what are the essentials, the things we simply can't live without? And what are the things that we'd be better off leaving behind? It's hard to know what's in your own baggage until you take a closer look.
I've my heart where my head should be light up the rest of me 'cause your dreams, they won't fall apart through the stops, the starts and your life is a work of art Jane By Design 1x09 - The Getaway Original air date February 28, 2012 (scoffs) Janey, I thought this whole weekend camping trip was only for one night.
It is.
But, you know, I just want to be prepared.
This is Nick's and my first camping trip together and I want everything to go perfectly.
I don't want to leave anything to chance.
Nervous, huh? No.
I On a scale of one to 10? Twelve.
(Chuckles) What if I mess things up? Aw, you won't.
And, you know, if you do, at least you'll be well-dressed.
I'm just glad you're gonna be there.
Right.
About that.
I might not go.
What? Why? Because Lulu's going.
And I haven't talked to her since Nick's party.
Has she tried to call? Yeah, she left me like a bunch of messages.
What did she say? That she's sorry about what happened the other night.
Whatever.
You know, it doesn't make any difference.
Look, Billy.
I know you're mad at Lulu.
And I agree she should have left with you at the party.
But, you know, eventually you're gonna have to talk to her.
Are you seriously trying to patch things up with me and Lulu right now? (Chuckles) No.
No.
But I will give the girl credit for one thing.
She's not giving up.
Can I help you? Hi, Tommy.
Is Billy home? No.
Who are you? I'm Lulu.
Okay.
I'm Billy's girlfriend.
Nice.
Did you guys just meet? No.
We've been dating for a while.
Really? I didn't know Billy had a girlfriend.
Can you just tell him I stopped by? Yeah, sure thing.
Thanks.
Hey.
What was your name again? Lulu.
What's a funny opening line for sex-ed class? A funny opening line? Sex-ed class is usually so stuffy and awkward.
I wanna lead off with a joke.
Make it fun.
Sex-ed classes are not supposed to be fun.
I suggest you make it as awkward as possible.
Trust me.
Okay.
Okay.
So.
Are you excited about the camping trip this weekend? I've decided to opt out of my chaperoning duties.
You're not going? Yeah.
Camping's not really my thing.
That's too bad.
Well, I'm just not really the outdoors type.
Really? I love camping.
I feel like it's a chance to just become one with nature.
Yeah.
That doesn't sound appealing to me at all.
But I hope you have fun.
Hey, Rita! Think fast.
- Thanks, Todd.
- Are those the right size? Yep.
They're perfect.
Great.
Hey, Ben.
Mr.
Hunter.
Come on.
You can call me Todd.
Okay.
Todd.
What's with the perfectly sized marshmallows? Oh, they're for the s'mores this weekend.
Rita loves s'mores, so She does? I mean, I knew that.
You did? Yeah.
You must've told me when we were having drinks the other night.
Okay.
Um, listen, Rita, you save me a seat at the campfire next to you, okay? You bring the marshmallows.
I'll bring the graham crackers and chocolate.
And I will bring the strawberries, so save a seat for me next to you, as well.
At the fire.
On the other side.
It's fine.
I'm confused.
I thought you just said you weren't going on the camping trip.
I was kidding.
I love camping.
I can't wait.
It's It's really, for me, a chance to become one with nature.
So, I'm gonna go read up right now on which plants I can eat and which ones will kill me.
It's going to be a really good time.
We're gonna have we're gonna have a lot of fun.
(Bell ringing) I just don't see what the big deal is.
The big deal is he didn't even tell his brother he has a girlfriend.
So? You didn't tell your dad that you have a boyfriend.
That's totally different.
- How is that different? - It just is.
- Okay? - If you say so.
He's coming over here, by the way.
- Don't turn around.
- Who? Billy? Yeah.
He's getting closer.
Hey! I said don't turn around.
I'm gonna go somewhere else.
Bye.
Hey.
Hey.
I like the new old look.
Thanks.
You know, I feel like myself again.
I'm glad.
Did you get my messages? (Sighs) Yeah.
I'm really sorry about the party, Billy.
I guess I just panicked.
I didn't know what I was supposed to do.
You were supposed to stand by me.
I know.
I thought you were on my side, Lulu.
I am on your side, Billy.
Just give me another chance and I'll prove it.
Look.
How about we put all this behind us for now and try and have some fun this weekend? Can we do that? (Bell ringing) Will you be my buddy? Your buddy? Yes.
I would like for us to be buddies.
Are you sure we're ready for that? I know it's a big step.
The rules of the camping trip require each student to have a buddy this weekend.
- And you want me? - Yes, I do.
I think it'll be good for us to finally have some time together.
And what about your brother? What about him? Ben's chaperoning, isn't he? Trust me, there is no way Ben is going.
- Why not? - He hates camping.
Ever since he was a kid, he's been terrified of small animals.
He's scared of nature in general.
He thinks it's too unpredictable.
Good news, my fellow campers.
- What? - That's right.
- No! - You're looking at the coolest - chaperone ever.
- Oh, no, no, no.
Ben.
You hate camping.
I'm gonna learn to love it.
You are not qualified to chaperone.
Actually, I am, because I'm faculty.
Okay.
Fine.
But I think you should know what you're getting yourself into.
You're not gonna scare me, Jane.
There will be numerous small creatures out there.
Creeping in the dark.
And most of them bite.
I'm just saying.
How small? Tiny.
No.
I can do this.
No, you don't have to do this.
Yes, I do.
I just need to find a buddy.
No.
So much for that time alone.
Fashion week is upon us and Donovan is expecting perfection.
And this is nowhere near perfection.
It is a competitive job market out there, people.
A cold, hard world, and I would hate for you to have to enter it.
Get back to work.
Well, that was inspiring.
It must be so frustrating for her.
What? Well, every time we preview a new line, Beau Bronn beats us to the punch.
Yeah.
It's frustrating for all of us, India.
That's what I meant.
Right.
Look, Jeremy, I know things have been a little tense between us since that whole wedding dress debacle last week.
Let me make it up to you.
I booked that place upstate for the weekend.
- You know, the one - India.
What? I told you.
It's over.
I know.
And I'm totally fine with that.
I just thought if you didn't have plans this weekend I have plans this weekend.
We haven't had a chance to spend a lot of time together.
You know? Just us.
So this is like your first romantic getaway? It's not exactly a romantic getaway.
Well, it can be if you want it to be.
Maybe.
I'm just glad I finally get some actual time with him.
Jane Quimby.
You really like this guy.
Yeah, I really do.
Tell me more.
Honestly? I'm kind of nervous talking about him right now.
Is that a bad thing? No, no, no.
That is a very good thing.
I just want this weekend to go well.
Until recently, our timing hasn't been great.
So, is he cute? Uh, he's really incredibly cute.
And smart.
And sweet.
And the best part about him is he likes me.
What's not to like? Thanks, Carter.
Look, trust me, you are going to have a fabulous weekend.
I can't wait.
India: Gray, can I have a word with you? What do you want, India? I was just wondering.
Who are you sending to Beverly Hills this weekend to take a look at the new store location? Someone from business affairs.
Why? If it's okay, I'd like to go instead.
I think it's important for us to be familiar with the store locations.
Okay.
Go ahead.
You're still here.
I am.
If it's okay with you, I'd like to bring an assistant with me.
Just in case anything unexpected comes up.
Whom did you have in mind? Me? Yes, you.
Why me? India requested you personally.
I don't understand.
Why would India want me to go anywhere with her? Exactly.
So, do you want me to go? I do.
But I have this really important Tell me something, Jane.
Do you trust India? I'm not sure if Just answer the question.
She's a little shady.
I agree.
How long have you had these suspicions? Oh, no, no, no.
No, no.
I'm not suspicious.
I just think she's a little shady.
Which is why I want you to go with her this weekend.
I need you to keep an eye on her.
I want you with her every minute.
I can't take a chance right now.
If India is up to something shady, I want to know about it.
Oh.
But I think that you could That'll be all.
Hi, it's me.
Hey.
Where are you? The bus is about to leave.
Change of plans.
Let me guess.
The internship? I'm sorry.
Something really important came up and it looks like I have to work all weekend.
- Great.
- I know.
I'm so sorry.
No, don't worry about it.
I mean, I should expect this sort of thing by now, right? Trust me.
I would much rather be with you this weekend.
It's work.
I really wish I could go camping.
I just Can't.
Again.
Don't worry.
Have a great weekend, Jane.
Jane's not coming? Stay out of it, Lulu.
Sorry.
No, no, wait.
I'm sorry.
I shouldn't take it out on you.
It's okay.
Trust me, I get it.
Where's Billy? If I had to guess, I'd say Jane needed his help with something and he went running to her.
What else is new? Hey, let me help you with that.
Thank you, Ben.
You are welcome, Rita Shaw.
I'm really glad you changed your mind about coming this weekend.
So am I.
It should be interesting.
As long as there are no unforeseen incidents.
(Gasps) Like squirrels attacking the campsite? I don't even I don't know why you would even joke about something like that.
So where's Jane? I haven't seen her.
Yeah, her internship decided to kidnap her for the weekend.
That's been happening a lot.
Yeah, it has.
I mean, I know she loves it and everything.
But it's kind of taken over her life.
I'm here to help if you need it.
Thanks.
So do you, um, wanna sit together on the bus? Todd already asked me to sit with him.
Of course he did.
Then who am I gonna sit with? You ready for some fun, Quimby? Why are you wearing that? Do you know how to tie a bowline knot? No, I do not.
Todd taught me the five essential camping knots.
Did you know he volunteered in the Peace Corps? Of course he did.
Why are we not moving? Nice of you to join us, Billy.
Better late than never.
Right, Mr.
Quimby? I don't know.
What why? Why? - Double cinch knot.
- Oh.
(Sighs) Hi, Lulu.
Sorry I'm late.
That was cutting it kind of close.
Yeah, I know, I didn't think I was gonna make it.
Neither did I.
So, why did you want to take me this weekend? To assist.
You could've taken anybody.
Yes.
But I wanted to take a nobody.
We're not gonna make the flight anyway.
We're fine.
We're never gonna make it.
The plane leaves in, like, eight minutes.
The plane leaves when we tell it to leave.
What? Why would they Wow.
Get up we're on a mission we're gonna, gonna do it right just, just forget it all let's go oh, oh, oh we're done with all this stressing out let's live it up turn it up time is feeling right no more waiting oh, tonight's the night Okay.
You've seen our three most exclusive listings.
Now comes the tough part.
Choosing.
Well, I think they're all fabulous.
Of course they were.
Jane, which one do you like? You're asking me? Well, you seem to have an opinion on everything.
Well, if I had to choose, I'd say my two favorite locations are the one on Wilshire and the one on Beverly.
Let's send Gray the one on Robertson.
But you just asked me for That one was my favorite, too.
You will not be disappointed.
I'll just get those papers sent to New York right away.
Thank you.
Thanks for your help.
(Sighs) It says to unfurl the tent.
I already unfurled it.
How can you tell? Are there pictures in the manual? Yes, but they all look like math, so I'm just ignoring them.
You guys need some help? I give up.
I think that was a yes.
Thanks, Billy.
Wow, I wouldn't have pegged you for the camping type.
Oh, there's a lot you don't know about me.
Such as? Former eagle scout.
Really? No.
(Both laughing) So, why were you late for the bus? Oh, I had to drop Jane off at the train station.
You know, traffic kind of sucked.
I figured you were with Jane.
Is that a problem? No.
I just let's just finish the tent.
All right.
That should just about do it.
Wow.
It's perfect.
Ha.
Listen.
Consider this your home away from home.
- I will.
Thank you, Todd.
- You're welcome.
So, is this like a hobby of yours? Tent building? (Laughs) No.
God, no.
No, I'd say carpentry is sort of my part-time hobby.
I spent a year in Haiti rebuilding homes for families who lost everything in that earthquake, so Amazing.
I didn't know you did that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I don't like to talk about it too much.
Yeah, right.
Sorry.
What's that, Ben? Nothing.
Ooh.
Having some tent issues there? No, no, no.
I'm just I'm just taking a break is all.
Okay.
Well, listen.
I got Rita's tent up pretty quick.
You need a hand, I'm happy to tackle yours.
No, I think I can tackle mine just fine.
All right, fair enough.
Hey, listen.
Make sure you dispose of those properly.
Don't wanna attract any bears.
Yeah.
Rita, let me show you the upstairs.
- Cut it out! - No, I'm serious.
Hey, Jane.
It's Ben.
Uh, are there bears wherever I am? Um, I wish you were here.
I hope you're not working too hard.
Hey, Jenkins.
You want some potato chips? (Door closes) Oh.
You look amazing.
What are you doing? None of your business.
Do you have another meeting? Again, none of your business.
I'm meeting with friends, okay? So, are they like friend friends or are they like business friends? What does it matter? It doesn't matter.
I was just wondering.
Business friends.
So, it is another meeting.
Okay.
I'm gonna stop asking questions now.
Good.
What are you going to do? I'm probably just gonna hang out in here and watch some TV.
Do you know they have movies on here that are still in theaters? So crazy.
Don't wait up.
See that pretty little girl always dressed in black she's been living on the edge and she like it like that think I hear her coming when I call her name yeah that pretty little girl wanna play my game Hey.
Can I buy you a drink? Oh.
Um, yeah.
I'll take a Shirley Temple.
Okay.
(Gasps) Hi, India.
What are you doing? I just came down for a drink.
Go back to the room.
You're Beau Bronn.
Yes, I am.
Come join us.
I didn't realize that you and India knew each other.
Oh, we've known each other for a long time.
Really? And what do you do, Christopher? I'm a junior designer at Threads.
One of our best.
What about you, Jane? Are you a designer? Well, I've always had a passion for She's Gray's assistant.
Yes.
I am.
So, Jane, how is Gray doing these days? She's busy, obviously.
She always worked too much.
Can I ask you a question? - No, you can't.
- Of course she can.
Why does Gray Hate me? I wasn't gonna put it like that.
Jane.
That's extremely personal.
It's fine.
My relationship with Gray has always been complicated.
I guess she never really trusted me.
Looking back, I'm not even sure if she trusted me on our wedding day.
Wait! What? Mmm.
Rita.
One for you.
Jenkins.
One for you.
How did you get it so golden brown? A little thing called timing.
Ben, I've got one for you, too.
No thanks.
I prefer my s'mores a little well done.
(Sighs) Wow, I am so glad that we get to share this weekend together.
Me, too.
Todd: This is what it's all about.
This is what it's all about.
Who wants to sing some songs? I don't.
Kumbaya My Lord, Kumbaya I'm gonna go check on the kids' campfire.
Get a little fresh air.
We're outside, Ben.
Are we? And yet I'm suffocating.
Kumbaya, My Lord, Kumbaya Oh, Lord, Kumbaya So, let me get this straight.
You and Gray were married once? Technically, we still are.
Wait.
Right now? Gray is currently married? To you? Does she know this? (Chuckles) Do you know this? Of course I do.
Frankly, I'm surprised she didn't tell you.
Did you know this? Yes, I did.
Sorry.
It's like I don't know Gray at all.
If it makes you feel better, that's pretty much what our marriage was like.
Listen, this was lovely, but I have another meeting.
India, please think about what I said.
Mmm-hmm.
Good night.
What did he want you to think about? - It's none of - My business? I told you to stay in the room.
- You never said that.
- It was implied.
India, I am not staying in the room.
You completely ruined my weekend by bringing me here.
Why? Did you have plans? - Yes, I did.
- With a guy? With a really good guy.
He's not a good guy.
- How do you know? - Trust me.
I know from experience.
Uh, you don't know Nick.
Nick? You were going to spend the weekend with a guy named Nick? Yes.
Oh.
Who did you think I was gonna spend the weekend with? Nobody.
Nobody.
Forget it.
(Sighs) India, what were you doing with Beau Bronn, anyway? You wouldn't understand.
Try me.
He asked me to come work for him.
- And what did you say? - I said no.
Then why did you meet with him? It's complicated, Jane.
Not everything fits into your neat, little, happy assistant box.
And frankly, there's nothing more to talk about.
I said no.
Oh, Chris.
You're back.
Yeah.
Beau gave me the rest of the night off.
Do you mind if I hang out with you two for a bit? Actually, we were just Not at all.
Let's get another round.
But that summer, the kid's creepy mom wanted revenge for what had happened to her son, so all the camp counselors got notes that said, "I know what you did.
" They were scared.
And they had to stay awake or the mom would go into their dreams and kill them with her knife fingers.
But they couldn't stay awake forever.
Eventually, they fell asleep.
And they died.
One at a time.
Out in these very woods.
Right over there.
That happened in these woods? Yup.
Pretty scary, huh? I've never been less scared.
(All chuckling) You just combined a bunch of scary movies.
That didn't even make sense.
Not true at all.
My neighbor's sister was one of the camp counselors who died.
Nice try, coach.
- Somebody else wanna tell a story? - Mind if I join you? Not at all.
Have a seat.
I know a game we can play.
It's called who would you save in a sinking canoe? Sounds scary.
No.
I've heard of this.
It's a trust exercise.
Right.
If everyone here were in a really big sinking canoe, and you could only save one person, who would you save? I'd save everyone.
Obviously.
You can't save everyone.
Yeah.
That's the dilemma.
You got to choose somebody.
I have a question for Billy.
If you were in a sinking canoe with Jane and me, who would you save? Wait.
What? Okay, this was a bad idea.
You don't have to answer that, Billy.
He doesn't have to.
I already know the answer.
Lulu, wait.
Okay.
Who's ready for another scary story? Hey.
What's going on? Nothing.
I just What's your problem with Jane? I don't have a problem with Jane.
I have a problem with the fact that my boyfriend if you're even still my boyfriend, his life revolves around another girl.
And that girl just happens to be Jane.
I mean, come on.
Don't you think that's a problem? - No.
- That's the problem.
What do you want me to say? I want you to say that you choose me over Jane.
I can't do that.
I'm sorry.
I just can't.
Ooh! Shirley Temple! Best Shirley Temple ever.
Shirley Temple? You're hilarious.
And so cute.
Isn't she cute? Thanks.
She's taken.
You have a boyfriend, Jane? Yes.
Well, maybe, I think.
You know, I'm not really sure.
How's the sex? (Laughs) What? We haven't exactly There it is.
They always like you before you sleep with them.
Sex ruins relationships.
You know what ruins relationships? Talking about relationships.
I prefer to keep it simple.
Right, Jane? Yeah, I like it simple.
That's right.
No strings.
Totally.
(Sings) String-free.
Because, you know, that's when they stop talking to you, when the sex happens.
I'm with Jane.
Why tie yourself down in a relationship when you can just have fun.
I could use another Shirley Temple.
I'll be right back with that.
How come you've never slept with this Nick guy? I don't know.
(Chuckles nervously) I guess it's because I'm not sure if he's the right guy.
Well, you're in luck, 'cause there are at least eight right guys here tonight.
But, just so you know, no strings over there? That is wrong guy.
You're good with them.
The students, they like you.
I like them.
So, how was Todd and his guitar? Very moving.
Of course it was.
This isn't so bad, is it? It's nice.
I wish Jane were here.
She would've had fun.
She was so excited about this trip.
Am I doing this right? This whole taking care of Jane thing.
No.
Wow.
Thanks.
No.
All I mean is there is no right way.
And there's no wrong way.
You just do the best you can do, Ben.
I don't think this internship is the right thing for her.
Why don't you just go down there? To her work? Yeah.
Talk to them.
See what she's doing.
Might make you feel better.
Yeah.
I think I might do that.
Thanks.
Welcome.
(Dance music playing) I'm gonna go get my drink.
(Cell phone ringing) - Hello? - Jane? I can't hear you.
This isn't Jane.
Who are you? - Who are you? - Can I speak to Jane, please? What? I can't hear you! No! No! No, no, no, no! Jane, you are not having sex with wrong guy tonight! Hello? Hello? Those two are never going to give us a real chance.
You know that, right? I don't know about you, but I'm tired of being second best.
And it sucks because I really like Billy but I can't compete with Jane.
Lulu, come on, you don't have to compete with anyone.
Put on navy suits and march and keep in line laugh at all the silly people out of time we count the minutes till we heal it with our wine we climb in bed with pretty strangers and we cry, oh, oh I'm not like that, I'm not like that I don't wanna hurt like they do they find it hard to be alone Thanks for picking me up, Tommy.
Hey.
Anything for my little brother.
Oh, I forgot to tell you.
Some hot chick came by the other day looking for you.
Said she was your girlfriend.
Since when do you have a girlfriend? I don't.
Not anymore.
That is too bad.
So, what you got going on tonight? Oh, naw, just some business.
Nothing you'd be interested in.
Maybe I would be interested.
(Fly buzzing) Man.
So, you made it through the night okay? No squirrel attacks? Yep.
It was a good night in nature.
Really? No.
I have a huge confession to make.
Okay.
- I hate camping.
- I know.
No, I mean, I hate camping.
I really hate everything about it.
I hate canteens.
I hate tents.
I hate sleeping on the ground.
I hate when people gather around a fire and sing.
I hate that when you're camping, for no reason, a stick is a suitable utensil.
And I'm very sorry, but I hate s'mores.
(Gasps) The marshmallow completely overwhelms the entire snack.
So why did you come this weekend? Because I like you.
And that easily outweighs all the things I hate about camping.
But I'm never gonna be the perfect guy.
Like Todd.
Todd? Yeah.
And you really, really deserve the perfect guy, Rita Shaw.
Is this just beginning? Or is it just a heartbeat? You are perfect.
Or is it just a second chance? I love camping.
India: Wake up, Jane.
- Jane! - Ow.
My head is killing me.
What was in those Shirley Temples? Mostly sugar.
Come on, get dressed.
What are we doing? We're in California, Jane.
What do you think we're doing? They want to kiss like the movies like we're under the sky on the fourth of July an honest kiss just won't suffice they want one to remember for the rest of their lives American girls know how to pretend you can be Barbie and I can be Ken they'll take you to LA and never land and imprint your soul with their Hollywood hands American girls American girls get whatever they want Janey, you home? Hey, Jane.
Jane? Jane? Nice (Clears throat) Hi.
Yeah.
Can I help you? Yeah.
I'm looking for Jane.
She's out of town on business, I'm afraid.
No, I'm sorry.
Um, Jane Quimby, your intern.
Intern? (Chuckles) Jane's not an intern.
She's Gray's assistant.
- Gray's - Assistant.
She's in Beverly Hills this weekend helping scout locations for a new store.
Is there something I could help you with? No.
I, uh That, um that about does it.
Thank you.
Welcome.
All right, fellows, here is how it's going down.
Billy, you're coming in the warehouse with me.
J.
D.
, you're driving.
I thought I was driving.
I never said you were driving.
I'll drive.
Look at J.
D.
He's built for driving.
I need you on the inside with me.
The inside of what? Why do you have a blueprint? We got to know the layout.
I thought we were just selling IDs.
Yeah, well, not anymore.
